The gut microbiota in animals is a dynamic ecosystem influenced by both the host itself and the environment it inhabits. It is known that short-term captivity can significantly impact the gut microbiota of plateau zokors, leading to substantial inter-individual variation. However, the specific changes in the assembly process of the gut microbiota in plateau zokors during captivity remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a comparative analysis on the assembly process of the gut microbiota in 22 male plateau zokors from the same location in Qinglin Township, Datong County, Qinghai Province, before (W) and after (L) laboratory rearing. We performed a single-factor correlation network analysis on the top 50 genera with relative abundance in each group. The results revealed that captivity increased the complexity of the gut microbiota in plateau zokors, indicating a higher number of interactions between different microbial species. However, this increase in complexity was accompanied by a decrease in stability, suggesting a higher degree of variability and potential disruption in the microbial community. According to the results of the neutral community model, the gut microbiota of plateau zokors in the W had a higher Nm value (Nm = 48,135) compared to the L (Nm = 39,671), indicating that species dispersal of the gut microbiota was greater in the wild than in captivity. In the wild, the modified stochasticity ratio (MST) was less than 0.5, suggesting that deterministic processes dominated. However, after 15 days of laboratory rearing, the MST became greater than 0.5, indicating a shift toward stochastic processes, and this difference was highly significant (p < 0.001). Background: The Tibetan antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii) is a migratory ungulate species that inhabits the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. In recent years, the population of Tibetan antelope has steadily increased owing to rigorous protection measures to safeguard the species from commercial poaching. Currently, infrastructure development, competition with domestic livestock, and predation are the principal factors threatening the survival of Tibetan antelope. Result: Our study found that migratory Tibetan antelope can adapt to the development of infrastructure over time, decreasing the potential negative impacts of such developments. Conclusion: We, therefore, urge infrastructure development companies to incorporate wildlife corridors that enable free movement of wildlife populations, particularly for migratory species. The differences in gut microbiota among different populations, to a certain extent, reflect the degree of interaction between individuals within populations. To assess the interaction levels among several small populations of Przewalski's gazelle ( Procapra przewalskii ) ( n  = 105, from seven different regions) based on differences in gut microbiota, we used the closely related Tibetan gazelle ( P. picticaudata ) ( n  = 52, from seven different regions) as a control. We then compared the gut microbial communities between different populations of the two species using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The results showed that within a 100 km geographical distance, the intergroup differences in relative abundance of dominant bacteria, α-diversity, β-diversity, and functional metabolism abundance were higher or significantly higher in Przewalski's gazelle (narrowly distributed species) compared to the Tibetan gazelle (widely distributed species). Additionally, the proportion of shared OTUs between groups in Przewalski's gazelle was significantly lower than in Tibetan gazelle ( p  < 0.05). Additionally, neutral community model results also showed lower dispersal limitation in the Tibetan gazelle compared to Przewalski's gazelle. Therefore, based on the above results, we comprehensively speculate that the spatial interaction degree of Przewalski's gazelle in different habitat patches is relatively low. Mammals host a remarkable diversity and abundance of gut microbes. Biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) in microbial genomes encode biologically active chemical products and play an important role in microbe-host interactions. Traditionally, the exploration of gut microbial metabolic functions has relied on the pure culture method. However, given the limited amounts of microbes being cultivated, insights into the metabolism of gut microbes in mammals continued to be very limited. In this study, we adopted a computational pipeline for mining the metagenomic data (named taxonomy-guided identification of biosynthetic gene clusters, TaxiBGC) to identify experimentally verified BGCs in 373 metagenomes across 53 mammalian species in an unbiased manner. We demonstrated that polyketides (PKs) and nonribosomal peptides (NRPs) are representative of mammals, and the products derived from them were associated with cell-cell communication and resistance to inflammation. Large carnivores had the highest number of BGCs, followed by large herbivores and small mammals. We also observed that the large mammals had more common BGCs that aid in the biosynthesis of a variety of natural products. However, small mammals not only had fewer BGCs but were also unique to each species. Our results provide novel insights into the mining of metagenomic data sets to identify active BGCs and their products across mammals.IMPORTANCEThe gut microbes host numerous biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) that biosynthesize natural products and impact the host's physiology. Historically, our understanding of BGCs in mammalian gut microbes was largely based on studies on cultured isolates; however, only a small fraction of mammal-associated microbes have been investigated. The biochemical diversity of the mammalian gut microbiota is poorly understood. Metagenomic sequencing contains data from a vast number of organisms and provides information on the total gene content of communities. Unfortunately, the existing BGC prediction tools are designed for individual microbial genomes. Recently, a BGC prediction tool called the taxonomy-guided identification of biosynthetic gene clusters (TaxiBGC) that directly mine the metagenome was developed. To gain new insights into the microbial metabolism, we used TaxiBGC to predict BGCs from 373 metagenomes across 53 mammalian species representing seven orders. Our findings elucidate the functional activities of complex microbial communities in the gut.

Fat-soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E, and K) are vital substances for maintaining normal physiological functions in the body. In recent years, scholars have explored the relationship between fat-soluble vitamins and the wasting disease - lung cancer. In this paper, we review recent studies on fat-soluble vitamins and lung cancer to clarify the relevance and molecular mechanisms of various vitamins in lung cancer, and whether the levels of fat-soluble vitamins in the body and vitamin supplementation affect the development of lung cancer.
