Recently, artificial intelligence (AI)-programmed automated writing evaluation (AWE) has attracted increasing attention in language research. Using a small data set arising from an analysis of five Chinese university-level English as a foreign language (EFL) students' submissions, this paper examined in detail how EFL students interacted with the feedback of Pigai, the largest AI-programmed AWE in China. The analysis started with the intention of capturing the machine feedback on the five students' submissions and the exchanges between the participants and Pigai over repeated submissions, ranging from 3 to 12 submissions. The analysis showed that the learners' interactions with Pigai focused on error corrective feedback in the initial two submissions. In the case of one student who had 12 submissions, the non-error corrective feedback increased gradually over time, providing rich linguistic resources but without examples and contextual information. The students' take-up rates of feedback with linguistic resources were much lower than that of error corrective and general feedback. A terrain model to map the stages and nature of student responses showed a more complete dynamic process, in which students' responses changed from the initial mechanical responses at the discrete language level to more considered approaches in response to machine feedback. The findings of this study have implications for both language pedagogy and the future design and development of AWE for second or foreign language learning.

Abstract Expansion of oceanic anoxia is a prevailing hypothesis for driving the marine end-Permian mass extinction and is mainly based on isotopic geochemical proxies. However, long-term oceanic redox conditions before the end-Permian mass extinction remain unresolved. Here we report a secular redox trend based on rock magnetic experiments and cerium anomalies through the Changhsingian and across the Permian-Triassic boundary at the Meishan section, China. Magnetic mineral assemblages changed dramatically at ca. 252.8 million years age (Ma), which indicates that oceanic deoxygenation started about 0.9 million years earlier than the end-Permian mass extinction. The magnetite-dominant post end-Permian mass extinction interval suggests a ferruginous dysoxic conditions with enhanced weathering in the earliest Triassic. Also, a gradual magnetite abundance decrease to pre-extinction levels is observed at ca. 251.5 Ma, coinciding temporally with the waning of Siberian Trap and arc volcanism. All of these observations demonstrate that environmental deterioration began much earlier than the end-Permian mass extinction and finally collapsed in the end-Permian.

Abstract Objectives The objectives of this study were to present an accessible C-shaped partial stapled hemorrhoidopexy (C-PSH) in the treatment of grade IV hemorrhoids and to assess long-term outcomes of this technique compared with circular stapled hemorrhoidopexy (CSH). Methods Conventional CSH kits combined with an intestinal spatula were used for performing C-PSH. A total of 256 patients with grade IV hemorrhoids referred to Hangzhou Third People's Hospital between January 2016 and June 2017 were obtained: 122 (47.7%) with C-PSH, and 134 (52.3%) with CSH. After propensity score matching, 222 patients (111 in C-PSH group and 111 in CSH group) were ultimately analyzed. The primary outcome was the five-year recurrence rate of hemorrhoids. Secondary outcomes included intraoperative outcomes, postoperative outcomes and complications. Results The operative time in the C-PSH group was slightly longer than that in the CSH group (p 0.05). Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that constipation was an independent prognostic factor for hemorrhoidal recurrence. Conclusions The accessible C-PSH seems to be a safe and effective technique in managing grade IV hemorrhoids. It has advantages in alleviating postoperative pain at first defecation, fecal urgency and major complications compared with CSH. It could be an alternative technique in the treatment of grade IV hemorrhoids.

Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide and is related to diet and obesity. Currently, crosstalk between lipid metabolism and CRC has been reported; however, the specific mechanism is not yet understood. In this study, we screened differentially expressed long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and mRNAs from primary cancer, paracancer, and white adipose tissue of CRC patients. We screened and analyzed the genes differentially expressed between primary and paracancer tissue and between paracancer and white adipose tissue but not between primary and white adipose tissue. According to the results of the biological analysis, we speculated a lncRNA (MIR503HG) that may be involved in the crosstalk between CRC and lipid metabolism through exosome delivery. With the development of underground rail transit, the concept of intelligent tunnel construction has been proposed and promoted. High-quality networking during tunnel construction is a prerequisite for this, making it highly urgent to establish networking during tunnel construction. When studying intra-tunnel networking, it is necessary to consider the propagation characteristics of radio waves in the tunnel. In this paper, according to the actual needs of engineering in tunnel construction and the characteristics of tunnel scenes, an improved ray tracing method is proposed, which considers the type and installation position of antennas, transceiver frequency band and power in channel modeling, and proposes a field strength calculation method under different coordinate systems according to the characteristics of straight and curved segments during tunnel construction. In addition, the propagation characteristics of radio waves in dynamic tunnel construction scenarios are quantitatively analyzed. In this paper, by establishing antenna diagram, two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of tunnels, the computer simulation method is applied to compare with the improved algorithm, and the results have good consistency, in addition, the improved algorithm does not require a lot of modeling work in the early stage, and has high applicability and portability. Not only that, this paper also makes actual measurements of the subway under construction in Zhengzhou, China in different scenarios, and verifies the effectiveness of the method.

Compared to nearshore wind farms, deepwater offshore wind farms have better wind resources and broader development space and will be the main trend of wind power development in the future. Due to the long distance from the shore, the investment and operation costs of the transmission system in a deepwater wind farm cluster are high and the electricity generated by the cluster is commonly transmitted by high-voltage direct current transmission technology to decrease power losses. For a given converter station, the comprehensive optimization of the layouts of the substations, AC export cables from the substation to the converter station, and cable arrays within each wind farm are complex and have not been well studied. This paper proposes a multi-level nested optimization strategy to minimize the total cost of the collection cables for a deepwater offshore wind farm cluster. The proposed method applies the Informed-RRT* method to optimize the layout of AC export cables while the cable arrays are arranged by Prim’s algorithm. During the optimization process, the gradient descent algorithm is used to optimize the positions of the substations, obtaining the transmission system scheme with the minimum cable investment. For a certain deepwater wind farm cluster, the total cable cost after optimization is reduced by 3.58%, which indicates the effectiveness of this method.

BackgroundWe conducted a comparative analysis between low and high-dose postoperative radiotherapy in patients with hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (HPSCC) in stage III or IV without positive surgical margins and extracapsular extension (ECE). Propensity score matching (PSM) was used to eliminate confounding factors and reduce bias.MethodsThe matched-pair analysis included 156 patients divided into two groups: the low-dose radiotherapy group (LD-RT 50 Gy, 78 cases) and the high-dose radiotherapy group (HD-RT 60 Gy, 78 cases). Both cohorts were statistically comparable in terms of age, gender, subsite, and TNM classification.ResultsThe median follow-up time was 49 months (ranging from 5 to 100 months). The overall survival (OS) rate, progression-free survival (PFS) rate, locoregional control rate (87% vs. 85.7%; p = 0.754), distant metastases-free survival (79.2% vs. 76.6%; p = 0.506), and the occurrence of second primary tumors (96.1% vs. 93.5%; p = 0.347) showed no significant differences between the LD-RT group and the HD-RT group. The 3-year OS was 64.9% and 61% in the low-dose and high-dose group, respectively, and 63% in the entire group (p = 0.547). The 3-year PFS was 63.6% and 54.5% (p = 0.250), respectively, and the 3-year PFS of the entire group was 59.1%. Multivariate analyses revealed that pathological T and N classification, and pathological differentiation were associated with 3-year OS, PFS, and LRFS and were independent prognostic factors (p < 0.05). LD-RT was not associated with an increased risk of death and disease progression compared to HD-RT.ConclusionThe results of postoperative low-dose radiotherapy did not show inferiority to those of high-dose radiation for patients with advanced hypopharyngeal cancer without positive surgical margins and ECE in terms of OS, PFS, locoregional control, and metastases-free survival.

Abstract Primary liver cancer (PLC) is a common gastrointestinal malignancy worldwide. While hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) are two major pathologic types of PLC, combined HCC and ICC (cHCC-ICC) is a relatively rare subtype that shares both hepatocyte and cholangiocyte differentiation. However, the molecular feature of this unique tumor remains elusive because of its low incidence and lack of a suitable animal model. Herein, we generated a novel spontaneous cHCC-ICC model using a Sleeping Beauty-dependent transposon plasmid co-expressing oncogenic Myc and AKT1 and a CRISPR-Cas9 plasmid expressing single-guide RNA targeting p53 into mouse hepatocytes via in situ electroporation. The histological and transcriptional analysis confirmed that this model exhibits cHCC-ICC features and activates pathways committing cHCC-ICC formation, such as TGF-β, WNT, and NF-κB. Using this model, we further screened and identified LAMB1, a protein involved in cell adhesion and migration, as a potential therapeutic target for cHCC-ICC. In conclusion, our work presents a novel genetic cHCC-ICC model and provides new insights into cHCC-ICC.

Sepsis is a common acute and critical disease in clinic. Systemic inflammatory response (SIRS) is one of the key mechanisms for the occurrence of sepsis. Visfatin, as an important cytokine, is involved in the occurrence and development of “cytokines storm” caused by sepsis. Recent clinical and basic research have shown that visfatin plays an important role in the occurrence and development of sepsis, and inhibition of visfatin expression can improve the systemic inflammatory response and the damage of lung, heart, liver and other important organs caused by sepsis. Based on the analysis of current clinical and basic research results, visfatin are expected to become an indicator of the severity of sepsis and a potential target for clinical intervention.

Since 2017, a fishing moratorium has been enforced in Lake Honghu as part of Chang–Jiang’s biodiversity conservation strategy. However, given that the lake is a semi-closed aquatic ecosystem and no longer serves as a habitat for certain fishes of the mid–lower Chang–Jiang basin, the efficacy of this moratorium remains uncertain. To address the question from a trophic ecology perspective, a stomach content analysis was performed on captured anchovies of C. brachygnathus, a current predominant species in Lake Honghu, from November 2020 to October 2021. The results showed that copepods, shrimps, and macrophytes were the main components of this anchovy’s diet, and there were size-related shifts in diets. The dominance of C. brachygnathus, a pelagic–littoral omnivore in this lake, implies a lacustrine environment shift triggered by continued human disturbances. The utilization of macrophytes as the main food items by large-sized anchovies of Lake Honghu has partially contributed to the rapid degradation of submerged vegetation. This highlights the need to remove large-sized individuals of C. brachygnathus and Carassius auratus, another benthic-omnivorous dominant fish, in order to effectively restore the aquatic vegetation and ecosystem of Lake Honghu. The current implementation of fishing moratoriums in subtropical shallow floodplain lakes such as Lake Honghu should be reviewed critically.
