Objective: Oral cancer examinations seek to clinically identify early oral cancers and discover premalignancies prior to their progression to invasive cancer. Method and materials: A cross-sectional study was conducted between April and August 2017 to explore and quantify the diagnostic approach used by United States (US) general dental practitioners following discovery of an oral lesion suspicious for malignancy/premalignancy. US licensed general dental practitioners who were clinically active members of the US National Dental Practice-Based Research Network were eligible to participate. Data for analysis were obtained via two questionnaires. Results: The majority of participants were males, practiced full-time, had a suburban primary practice, were born during the 1950s, and graduated dental school in the 1980s or 2000s. After identifying an oral lesion suspicious for premalignancy/malignancy, the next action of most general dental practitioner respondents (65.4%) was to refer the patient for consultation/biopsy. Most general dental practitioners (87.2%) referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon; 22% of general dental practitioners reported personally biopsying suspicious lesions. There was a relatively weak association between completing an Advanced Education in General Dentistry or General Practice Residency and subsequently personally performing biopsies on patients with oral lesions suspicious for malignancy/premalignancy (OR 1.33, P = .06). Most written referrals took place electronically and often included information, including lesion location (87.0%), lesion sign/symptoms (85.3%), lesion history (83.9%), radiographs (59.3%), medical history (50.6%), dental history (48.8%), and photographs (42.4%). When a referral biopsy was performed, referring clinicians were most frequently informed of the findings via a written report (96.7%, when positive for malignancy/premalignancy, and 95.4% when negative). Conclusion: A snapshot is presented of current actions taken by US general dental practitioners following the discovery of oral abnormalities suspicious for premalignancy/malignancy. Purpose: Patients may have high expectations regarding dental implants based on the source of their information, which can lead to challenges in clinical communication. This study aims to evaluate the quality of responses provided by Chat Generative Pretrained Transformer (ChatGPT, OpenAI), an artificial intelligence (AI) program, to patient questions in the field of dental implantology. Materials and Methods: This study was prospectively designed as a cross-sectional study. Frequently asked questions by patients about general information on dental implantology (Part 1) and dental implant brands (Part 2) were posed to the ChatGPT program. Responses were independently assessed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons (Group 1; n = 10), periodontologists (Group 2; n = 10), prosthodontists (Group 3; n = 10), and general dentists (Group 4; n = 10) using the Global Quality Scale (GQS, scored from 1 [low quality] to 5 [high quality]). Results: There was a total of 60 questions, with 30 questions in each part. Participants in the study were evenly distributed by gender (50% female, 50% male) with a mean age of 32.6 ± 4.07 years. The mean years of experience were 8.5 ± 3.12 years. There were no significant differences in mean age, gender, and years of experience among the groups (P > .05). The overall mean GQS score was 3.87 ± 0.29. Part 1 had a mean score of 3.9 ± 0.35, and Part 2 had a mean score of 3.85 ± 0.29, with no statistically significant difference (P > .05). Conclusions: The AI platform may contribute to the additional education of patients in the field of dental implantology and aid in understanding treatment procedures. Purpose: To evaluate the distortion probability in impressions of completely dentate arches when different impression materials are used in relation to operator experience. Materials and Methods: A total of 28 students (Group A) and 7 dentists (Group B) performed three maxillary impressions on 28 participants, each using vinyl siloxane ether (VSE), polyether (PE), and irreversible hydrocolloid (IHC). Gypsum master casts were fabricated and subsequently digitized. Intraoral scans were taken as a control. Differences between master casts and intraoral scans were visualized with heatmaps, and planar deviations were investigated. If planar deviations > 120 µm were found, the impression was rated as "distorted." An additional superimposition using the casts from VSE or PE was performed to confirm the presence of distortions. The relative number of surfaces with distortions in each impression was calculated. The procedure was repeated for a distortion threshold of 500 µm. The statistical analyses included repeated measures ANOVA (RMA) and post hoc tests (a < .05). Results: When 120 µm was considered as the threshold for distortions, IHC impressions showed higher distortion probability than PE impressions in Group A (P = .003) and Group B (P < .0001). In Group B, PE showed a lower distortion probability than VSE (P = .02). There was no significant difference between the study groups (P = .42). Considering 500 µm as a threshold for distortions, there was no difference between impression materials (P = .17) or study groups (P = .53). Conclusions: There were no statistically significant differences in relation to operator experience. Different impression materials had a significant impact on distortion probability. Purpose: This study investigated the magnitude, direction, and temporal aspects of the force applied during instrumentation with a piezoelectric ultrasonic periodontal scaler, compared this force with recommendations in the literature, and assessed the influence of the profession (dentist or dental hygienist) and calculus hardness. Materials and Methods: The force applied by ten dental hygienists and six dentists during debridement of comparatively soft and hard artificial dental calculus with a piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler was recorded in-vitro. The total force and its components in three axes were statistically analysed. Results: During debridement of soft artificial dental calculus, the mean total force applied by dental hygienists was 0.34 N (± 0.18 N, range: 0.13 N to 0.59 N) and by dentists 0.28 N (± 0.33 N, range: 0.06 N to 0.95 N), and the total force exceeded 0.5 N approximately 23% and 14% of the time for dental hygienists and dentists, respectively. During debridement of hard artificial dental calculus, the mean total force applied by dental hygienists was 0.63 N (± 0.40 N, range: 0.28 N to 1.64 N) and by dentists 0.57 N (± 0.17 N, range: 0.34 N to 0.76 N); the total force exceeded 0.5 N more than half of the time for both professions. On average, dental hygienists applied 1.85x (p = 0.04) and dentists 2.04x (p = 0.06) higher force on hard than on soft artificial calculus. However, dental hygienists and dentists used similar forces during the debridement of both hard (p = 1.00) and soft (p = 0.26) calculus. Conclusion: The force applied during the debridement of hard artificial dental calculus was statistically significantly higher than during the debridement of soft artificial dental calculus. No statistically significant difference between dentists and dental hygienists was found. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the usefulness of a newly developed oral simulator for nursing students’ oral assessment education on oral diseases and symptoms. Materials and Methods: The participants were first-year students (n=105) at a nursing school in Japan. Ten identical oral simulators with angular cheilitis, missing teeth, dental caries, calculus, periodontitis, hypoglossal induration, food debris, and crust formation were created by a team of dentists. After a 45-minute lecture programme for oral assessment performance with the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT), the ability test with the simulators and the OHAT as well as test feedback were conducted in a 30-minute practical programme. To evaluate the effectiveness of the programmes, questionnaires and ability tests with slides of oral images were conducted at baseline and after the programme. Results: Ninety-nine students (94.3%) participated in this study. The results of the ability test with the simulators and the OHAT in the practical programme showed that the correct answer rates of assessing tongue, gingiva, present teeth, and oral pain were less than 40%. Their levels of confidence, perception, and oral assessment performance were statistically significantly higher after the programmes than they were at baseline. Their level of confidence in assessing the need for dental referral had the largest increase in scores compared to the lowest scores at baseline in the nine post-programme assessment categories. Esthetics is important for any dental implant but crucial for implants in the anterior region. Restorations in this region are demanding, and the goal of re-establishing an attractive smile without revealing differences from the natural teeth is difficult to achieve. The aim of this study was to examine the clinical success of the socket-shield technique regarding soft tissue stability and overall esthetic outcome. Pink esthetic scores (PESs) were collected at two time points (T1: 6 months; T2: 6 years) by three different specialists. This prospective cohort clinical study involved 30 patients (7 women and 23 men) with a mean age of 42.3 years. There were no significant differences in PES values assessed by the oral surgeon and prosthodontist (P > .05) at either of the assigned time points. The periodontist found differences in PES values between T1 and T2 (P < .05), but they were modest in value. Analyses of each individual variable at given time intervals revealed significant differences in the shape of the distal papillae (χ² = 6.182; P < .05) and soft tissue margin level (χ² = 6.507; P < .05). BACKGROUND: Dental Patient Reported Outcomes (PROs) relate to a dental patients subjective experience of their oral health. How practitioners and patients value PROs influences their successful use in practice. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 practitioners and 32 patients who provided feedback on using a mobile health (mHealth) platform to collect the pain experience after dental procedures. A themes analysis was conducted to identify implementation barriers and facilitators. RESULTS: Five themes were uncovered: (1) Sense of Better Care. (2) Tailored Follow-up based on the dental procedure and patients pain experience. (3) Effective Messaging and Alerts. (4) Usable Digital Platform. (5) Routine mHealth Integration. CONCLUSION: Frequent automated and preferably tailored follow-up messages using an mHealth platform provided a positive care experience for patients, while providers felt it saved them time and effort. Patients thought that the mHealth questionnaires were well-developed and of appropriate length. The mHealth platform itself was perceived as user-friendly by users, and most would like to continue using it. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Patients are prepared to use mobile phones to report their pain experience after dental procedures. Practitioners will be able to close the post-operative communication gap with their patients, with little interruption of their workflow.

ABSTRACT Objective Materials and Methods Results Conclusion Studying dentists' knowledge of dry mouth management is crucial for effective diagnosis and treatment, improving patient outcomes and oral health. This study aimed to evaluate their knowledge and awareness of dry mouth and its predictors.A pre‐validated online survey was administered to a convenience sample of dentists across six countries. The questionnaire evaluated knowledge in various domains, including predisposing factors, diagnosis, clinical signs and symptoms, and management of dry mouth.A total of 884 dentists participated. Knowledge and awareness of dry mouth management varied significantly between countries (p < 0.05). Overall, 34.3% of participants demonstrated good knowledge, while 53.7% had moderate knowledge. Regarding management awareness, 55.4% had good awareness and 35.5% had moderate awareness. A majority (69.2%) showed good knowledge of common signs, symptoms, and consequences of dry mouth. Significant predictors of better knowledge and awareness included the country of practice and attendance at continuing education courses on dry mouth.The findings suggest that dentists in the surveyed countries require improved education on dry mouth and its management. Periodontal surgery for gingival defects is widely recognized by dental care professionals and researchers for its effectiveness in treating gingival recession and improving oral health outcomes. YouTube (Google LLC) is 1 of the health information sources patients and clinicians use, and assessing its content quality is crucial. The authors aimed to examine the content and quality of YouTube videos on gingival graft procedures. The online video streaming platform YouTube was searched using the key word gingival graft. Two independent examiners analyzed a total of 120 videos; a third examiner assessed interrater reliability. Fifty videos that met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The assessed content topics for these YouTube videos consisted of 13 different categories, and their overall quality was evaluated using the Video Information and Quality Index (VIQI). Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software, Version 9.4 (SAS Institute). There were 23 videos in the high-quality content groups and 27 videos in the low-quality content group. Hospitals and universities uploaded most of the included videos. The most commonly discussed topics in the included videos were the patient's condition (36 [72%]) and area of tissue graft (34 [68%]). The total VIQI score and flow had a significant impact on the overall content score (P <.05). There was a direct correlation between total VIQI scores and total content scores and an inverse relationship between viewing rate and total content scores. To ensure patients receive accurate and up-to-date information about treatment, the authors recommend guiding them toward reliable resources by means of providing direct links to trustworthy websites, creating and sharing playlists of reliable educational videos, and offering printed materials with quick-response codes linking to verified sources. With the rising importance of mental health screenings in nontraditional settings, dental offices offer an important opportunity to provide these services. This feasibility study examined mental health screenings and referral to treatment procedures in dental practices. A total of 17 dentists, dental hygienists, and dental office staff members (dental office personnel [DOP]) from 5 dental practices enrolled 36 patients in the study. Patients completed 4 validated mental health screening instruments. In addition to training in study procedures, DOP also were trained on how to review patient screening measures and provide appropriate mental health follow-up (ie, provide a list of area mental health resources) when necessary. Twenty-two patients (61.1%) met the study threshold for follow-up on any mental health screening form. DOP provided appropriate follow-up for all 22 patients, which included providing a list of area mental health resources. DOP reported that the mental health screening procedures did not disrupt the workflow in 93% of patient encounters. Overall, DOP reported minimal disruption in their workflow. The findings suggest the viability of incorporating regular mental health screenings as part of the regular dental patient workflow. This study also highlights the potential for the scalability and impact of screening procedures in dental practices. This feasibility study highlights the potential of dental offices becoming an avenue for screening patient mental health concerns and providing area resources, thus enhancing comprehensive patient care and overall patient well-being. Bone anabolic drugs used for the pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis have the potential to enhance alveolar bone regeneration to improve implant success. There are no US Food and Drug Administration–approved drugs indicated to improve oral bone density around teeth or implants. The authors summarized expert opinions on a novel coordinated treatment approach leveraging the effects of systemic bone anabolic drugs to enhance dental implant therapy in patients with osteoporosis and a dual referral model for physicians and dentists to address the clinical needs of patients with osteoporosis from a comprehensive perspective of oral-systemic health. Interviews of key opinion leaders were conducted with a bone health specialist group consisting of specialists in orthopedic surgery, internal medicine, geriatrics, endocrinology, and clinical densitometry and a surgical dental specialist group consisting of periodontists and oral surgeons. Overall, both groups shared positive feedback on the idea of strategically timing administration of anabolic osteoporosis drugs with dental treatment. Both groups expressed interest in the dual referral model. The feedback of key opinion leaders supported the coordinated bone anabolic therapy concept and identified a need for improved interdisciplinary collaboration, education, and communication to realize the synergies of physician-dentist clinical cooperation. People with special needs, like those with Down syndrome, Parkinson disease, or dementia, frequently suffer from orofacial pain conditions and dysfunction of the masticatory system. However, the accurate assessment of orofacial pain and dysfunction in such individuals is challenging. In this review, the complexities of assessing and managing orofacial pain and dysfunction in special needs populations will be described, along with their comorbid orofacial conditions like impaired oral health, salivary problems, and movement disorders of the masticatory system. In addition, the importance of maintaining or restoring a good quality of life will be highlighted, while the urgent need for oral care as part of palliative care will be stressed as well. To accomplish all this, interdisciplinary collaboration between medical doctors and dentists should be promoted in research, education, prevention, and care provision. Background: Premature loss of primary teeth (PLPT) can be a rare presentation of systemic medical conditions. Premature loss of primary teeth may present a diagnostic dilemma to paediatric dentists. Aims: To identify systemic conditions associated with PLPT and develop a clinical aid. Design: OVID Medline, Embase and Web of Science were searched up to March 2023. Citation searching of review publications occurred. Exclusion occurred for conference abstracts, absence of PLPT and absence of English‐language full text. Results: Seven hundred and ninety‐one publications were identified via databases and 476 by citation searching of review articles. Removal of 390 duplicates occurred. Following the exclusion of 466 records on abstract review, 411 publications were sought for retrieval, of which 142 met inclusion criteria. Thirty‐one systemic conditions were identified. For 19 conditions, only one publication was identified. The majority of publications, 91% (n = 129), were case reports or series. Most publications, 44% (n = 62), were related to hypophosphatasia, and 25% (n = 35) were related to Papillon–Lefèvre. Diagnostic features were synthesised, and a clinical aid was produced by an iterative consensus approach. Conclusions: A diverse range of systemic diseases are associated with PLPT. Evidence quality, however, is low, with most diseases having a low number of supporting cases. This clinical aid supports paediatric dentists in differential diagnosis and onward referral. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, awareness, and practice of intraoral scanners (IOS) and the factors affecting their accuracy amongst dental interns and practitioners. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study in which data was collected from a representative population in Saudi Arabia, with the help of online questionnaires. The forms were distributed to 500 dental interns and practitioners and the questionnaire's validity and reliability were evaluated for vetting and remarks. The questionnaire consisted of three parts: the participants' demographic details, questions on the awareness and knowledge of participants regarding IOS, and the factors affecting the accuracy in clinical use of IOS. Questions were to be answered with 'yes', 'no' and 'I don't know'. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed using the control chart technique and the chi-squared test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Most of the participants (58%) knew about the IOS and its applications (47.5%), but the majority of the participants did not use IOS in their clinics (43.5%). The majority of males (57.39%) and females (50.86%) strongly agreed that cost was a barrier to purchasing an IOS. To better get more knowledge on IOS, the specialists 66 (16.5%) and interns 54 (13.5%) chose continuing dental education programs and workshops. There was a significant association (p < 0.05) of knowledge and awareness, perception, and factors affecting parameters with different categories and years of experience. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, most participants had a positive stance towards IOS but due to inadequate knowledge and understanding, its use and applications were minimal. IOS was well-received regardless of operator training and experience. There is a significant need to increase awareness of this concept, as it may increase treatment efficiency and effectiveness. Aim Methodology Results Conclusions To explore the context in which general dental practitioners (GDPs) decide to refrain from further treatment, that is, ortho‐ or retrograde retreatment or extraction of a root canal filled tooth with persistent asymptomatic apical periodontitis (PAAP).Fifteen GDPs were strategically selected for in‐depth interviews. The informants were encouraged to describe in their own words and in as much detail as possible, the three most recent patient cases of PAAP of a root canal filled tooth, in which they decided to refrain from further treatment. The interviews were recorded digitally and transcribed verbatim. The collected material was analysed according to Qualitative Content Analysis with an inductive approach.A pattern of varying degrees of uncertainty associated with the decision process was identified. The motives to refrain intervention had great diversity. The result from analysis of the qualitative data was formulated in an overall theme ‘Between doubt and certainty in a complex clinical context’ covering the latent content. The first main category covering the manifest content was ‘The continuum of confidence’ with three subcategories ‘Experienced uncertainty’, ‘Reluctant approval’ and ‘At ease with refraining’ illustrating the feelings and attitudes experienced by the informants. The second category was ‘In support of acceptance’ with three subcategories ‘Patient's autonomy, risks and cost‐benefits’, ‘Emotional aspects’ and ‘Relieving measures’ representing the reasons for refraining from intervention.The decision to refrain from further treatment, that is, ortho‐ or retrograde retreatment or extraction of a root canal filled tooth with PAAP was made with some measure of confidence, combined with compensatory strategies to support the decision, taking into account not only values beneficial to the patient and awareness of limited external resources, but also factors related to the informants' personal preferences, convenience, concerns, ambition and emotions. Background: The use of radiation is important in different medical procedures, and to ensure a high level of good medical practice, radiation protection (RP) should be seen as a very important subject. This review shows information about the knowledge in the scope of radiation protection among healthcare professionals exposed to ionizing radiation. There are not many studies that evaluate the radiation exposure of healthcare professionals. Methods: A systematic search was performed, using PRISMA guidelines, in Pubmed and Scopus databases and manually to identify relevant articles to answer the PICOS question, "Is there an adequate level of literacy in the scope of radiation protection among healthcare professionals exposed to ionizing radiation?". This systematic review included cross-sectional studies with the following inclusion criteria: (i) in Portuguese, Spanish, or English; (ii) about literacy in the scope of radiation protection; (iii) published between 2017 and 2024; and (iv) participants must be dentists, radiographers, doctors, and nurses. The JBI critical assessment tool was used to assess the risk of bias. Results: The search identified 566 potentially relevant references, which, after applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, resulted in 12 articles. Studies found that the overall knowledge of these healthcare workers was unsatisfactory, and a lack of knowledge in radiation protection negatively affects health services' quality. Training is essential and must emphasize how radiation exposure can be minimized, safeguarding health professionals' trust and sense of security. Results showed that more years of experience make workers more attentive to protection measures, suggesting that training strategies focused on basic radiological risks and radiation safety are needed. Conclusions: Key findings recommend implementing a standardized national training program on the basic principles and safety of ionizing radiation for all healthcare professionals. There is limited literature examining the context of dental avoidance behavior.The aim of the study is to examine attitudes toward dental care services among adults.Overall, 16 patients participated in semi‐structured interviews. The interviews were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Through independent reviews of the themes that comprise the patients' experience, a consensus was established among the researchers.Ten major themes were identified that encapsulate patients' attitudes toward dental care attendance: Effect of environment and equipment, Fear and anesthesia, Procrastination, Dissatisfaction with the dental care system, Expectations of dentists, Quality of dental care, Edentulousness and social status, Financial involvement, Aesthetics, and Dentists' behavior. Compliance with oral health maintenance can be enhanced by specific training for professionals and dentistry students and by fine tuning the dental care system.This is the first comprehensive study in Hungary investigating attitudes among dentist patients toward dental care. The results suggest that there are many factors that may affect dental care attendance. Thus, these findings make a potentially fundamental contribution to the improvement of dental care and support practitioners in enriching their understanding of dental avoidance behavior. ABSTRACT Objectives Methods Results Conclusions The aim of this study was to perform a descriptive analysis of oropharyngeal adverse events (AEs) related to drugs and/or vaccines in order to provide useful information for clinicians.Data related to three regions of Italy were analyzed from 2019 to 2021 by using the National Pharmacovigilance database.Among overall 67,384 cases, 2773 (4.1%) reported at least one oropharyngeal AE. Most cases referred to females (71.0%) and adults (70.8%). The majority of cases were reported as not serious (68.4%) and the outcome was mainly positive (73.5%). The cases related to drugs (52.2%) were slightly more than those related to vaccines (47.8%), the latter nearly completely represented by COVID‐19 vaccines. Among 3324 oropharyngeal AEs, the most commonly reported were oropharyngeal conditions (65.9%). The most reported AEs related to vaccines were paresthesia oral and oropharyngeal pain, whereas the most reported AEs related to drugs were throat tightness and angioedema. A marked under‐reporting of osteonecrosis of the jaw (2.9%) was observed, despite this risk was well documented in the same country.This analysis suggested an under‐reporting of oropharyngeal AEs and the need to better train dentists, dental hygienists, and also general practitioners. Background: In Canada, a new federal public dental insurance plan, being phased in over 2022–2025, may help enhance financial access to dental services. However, as in many other countries, evidence is limited on the supply and distribution of human resources for oral health (HROH) to meet increasing population needs. This national observational study aimed to quantify occupational, geographical, institutional, and gender imbalances in the Canadian dental workforce to help inform benchmarking of HROH capacity for improving service coverage. Methods: Sourcing microdata from the 2021 Canadian population census, we described workforce imbalances for three groups of postsecondary-qualified dental professionals: dentists, dental hygienists and therapists, and dental assistants. To assess geographic maldistribution relative to population, we linked the person-level census data to the geocoded Index of Remoteness for all inhabited communities. To assess gender-based inequities in the dental labour market, we performed Blinder-Oaxaca decompositions for examining differences in professional earnings of women and men. Results: The census data tallied 3.4 active dentists aged 25–54 per 10,000 population, supported by an allied workforce of 1.7 dental hygienists/therapists and 1.6 dental assistants for every dentist. All three professional groups were overrepresented in heavily urbanized communities compared with more rural and remote areas. Almost all dental service providers worked in ambulatory care settings, except for male dental assistants. The dentistry workforce was found to have achieved gender parity numerically, but women dentists still earned 21% less on average than men, adjusting for other characteristics. Despite women representing 97% of dental hygienists/therapists, they earned 26% less on average than men, a significant difference that was largely unexplained in the decomposition analysis. Conclusions: Accelerating universal coverage of oral healthcare services is increasingly advocated as an integral, but often neglected, component toward achieving the health-related Sustainable Development Goals. In the Canadian context of universal coverage for medical (but not dentistry) services, the oral health workforce was found to be demarcated by considerable geographic and gendered imbalances. More cross-nationally comparable research is needed to inform innovative approaches for equity-oriented HROH planning and financing, often critically overlooked in public policy for health systems strengthening. (1) Background: Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs are a common medical condition among dental hygienists and dentists, making them a common occupational risk for dental professionals. The purpose of the work was to collect information about the dental professions and their habits to highlight what can be good practices to be carried out to prevent any musculoskeletal disorders. (2) Methods: To identify habits and problems inherent in the professional activity of dental hygienists and dentists, a questionnaire was formulated on the use of enlarging systems. (3) Results: The questionnaire was completed by 241 dental professionals. As for the use of magnifiers, 72.6% of participants use them: among dental hygienists, 67.8% use magnifiers, among dentists, 80.9% use magnifiers; there is a statistically significant difference. There is no statistically significant difference between professions regarding muscle disorders. (4) Conclusions: For a clearer assessment, it would be appropriate to submit the questionnaire to a wider sample of professionals, to define better the correlation between musculoskeletal disorders, work activity and the type of enlarging systems used. The objective of this research is to determine how informed consent is used in dental practice in southern Peru in the year 2023. The methodological design adopts a descriptive level with a mixed approach that is divided into two stages: The first consisted of a qualitative theoretical-analytical-rational analysis, followed by a subsequent empirical analysis with a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional approach. The study was carried out in a population of dentists who practice the dental profession in southern Peru in the year 2023 with a non-probabilistic convenience sample of 131 dentists. The main results were that the use of informed consent (14.5%) states that they do not use it in their daily consultation and (59.5%) use it in an erroneous way, due to different factors that influence this procedure and that the non-use of informed consent in its highest percentage arguing "lack of time" on the part of dentists It was concluded that there is a high rate of dental professionals who do not use informed consent in their professional practice, even more so that there is a high percentage that does not use consent correctly reported as an ethical-legal document. Background: Studies documenting the treatments used by dentists in the management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) have been undertaken in some countries; however, no such research has been conducted in Australia. No similar studies have been documented for physiotherapists. Objective: The aim of the study was to determine the treatment options and referral patterns used by Australian dentists and physiotherapists in managing people with TMDs. Methods: Prospective nationwide online questionnaires targeting Australian dentists and physiotherapists were created for Australian dentists and physiotherapists. Results: Seventy‐eight respondents (27 dentists; 51 physiotherapists) completed all questions in the questionnaires. Sixty respondents reported actively treating people with TMDs. The treatment options used most frequently by dentists included advice and education, oral appliances, physical agents such as moist heat and medications. The treatment options most frequently used by physiotherapists included manual therapy, exercises, electrophysical agents and advice and education. Referrals were most frequently made to dentists and physiotherapists with experience and/or expertise in managing people with TMDs and to general dentists. Conclusions: Commonly used treatment options were mostly conservative, reversible and evidence‐based. In recent years, Romania's stomatology private practice sector has seen substantial growth, with many dentists fully committing to building and expanding their own practices, often funded by their personal income. This study aimed to explore how various postures affect the muscle groups of dentists (380), particularly focusing on identifying positions that may jeopardize their musculoskeletal health. A group of dentists effectively participated in this study (10), adhering to their regular work routines while wearing wearable sensors on their backs to monitor posture and activity. The data gathered from these sensors were analyzed using the RULA (rapid upper-limb assessment) and REBA (rapid entire-body assessment) tools. The findings indicated that the head and shoulder movements during dental procedures involved considerable and repetitive angular shifts, which could strain the neck and back muscles and heighten the risk of musculoskeletal problems. Additionally, the standing postures adopted by the dentists were associated with an increased risk of postural issues and greater overall fatigue. Objectives: Anti‐resorptive agents have been linked to the development of MRONJ in patients undergoing dental surgical procedures. This survey aims to explore the level of knowledge and experience of Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology members in the management of patients treated with anti‐resorptive agents and with the risk of developing MRONJ. Materials and Methods: An 18‐item questionnaire was submitted by e‐mail to the SIdP members. Statistical analyses were carried out. Continuous variables were described as mean ± standard deviation (SD) or median, and first and third quartile according to distribution's normality. Normality of data was checked with Shapiro–Wilk test. Results: Four hundred and fifty‐one questionnaires were returned by e‐mail (32%). Most of the respondents were private practitioners (81.8%). Only 47.7% declared to be highly confident in managing patients on anti‐resorptive therapy while 92.5% reported to have performed tooth extractions and 52.3% implant surgery in patients under anti‐resorptive therapy for osteometabolic disorders. One or more MRONJ‐affected patients were encountered by 63.2% of the respondents. Conclusions: This survey highlights the need to develop a "dedicated" program both for dentists and prescribers to improve the level of cooperation and to increase the level of awareness of patients treated with anti‐resorptive agents. Objectives: Malnutrition is common among patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) and associated with poorer outcomes. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are often prescribed, with concerns raised about their cariogenicity. This study examined ONS use and caries experience in patients with HNC 12 months post‐diagnosis. Methods: Fifty‐four patients with HNC referred for pre‐radiotherapy dental assessment were recruited. Data collected included: age, gender, residential postcode, smoking, alcohol use, HNC characteristics, dental history, oral hygiene habits, dietary advice and ONS use. Data was collected at diagnosis, during radiotherapy and 6 weeks, three, six‐ and 12‐months post‐treatment completion. Results: Fifty‐one subjects completed the study. 76.5% of the participants used ONS for an average of 13.8 weeks. Caries developed in 22.9% of ONS users and 11.1% of non‐users (p = 0.6585). The mean overall duration of ONS use was 18.7 weeks for the caries group and 8.5 weeks for the caries‐free group (p = 0.1507). Lack of collaboration and disconnection was noted between dietary advice given by dieticians and dentists. Conclusions: ONS use is common among patients with HNC. Larger studies are needed to establish the reasons for caries development and impacts of ONS use on oral health. Importance of multidisciplinary management of malnutrition is highlighted. Over the past decade, access to National Health Service (NHS) dentistry in England has been problematic. There are increasing media reports of patients being unable to find treatment at a local NHS dentist. However, the extent of this issue varies by location and by the characteristics of the neighbourhood. The study uses official data sources on NHS dental provision and population. Travel accessibility is measured using car journey times. An advanced form of Floating Catchment Area accessibility is used, which accounts for supply competition, varying catchments, and distance decay. Spatial availability and accessibility indices are calculated. Ways in which the method can be used to explore various types of 'what-if' scenarios are outlined. Both availability and accessibility vary by the level of neighbourhood deprivation and the urban/rural nature of the neighbourhood. A case study, based on a real-world situation, shows the impact on the local neighbourhood of the closure of a dental practice. For all neighbourhoods, NHS dental provision is generally less than would be needed to provide basic dental care. The interpretation of outputs needs to take account of edge-effects near to Scotland and Wales. Possible improvements include the inclusion of other modes of travel and the exclusion of the population that does not want to access NHS care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Torture victims struggling with post‐traumatic stress often experience elements in the dental treatment situation that may trigger trauma‐related reactions. The aim of the study was to explore intervention strategies that will enable dental health workers to adapt dental treatment to the needs of torture survivors. Exploratory interviews were conducted with 10 torture‐exposed resettled refugees with dental treatment experience in Norway. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis, which suggested that to minimize trauma‐reactions, dental personnel should focus on creating a safe therapeutic space and strengthening the patient's sense of control. Four main categories of clinical advice were proposed: (i) Acquire knowledge about psychology, consequences of torture, cultural differences, trauma‐informed care, and the patients' individual needs; (ii) Recognize the trigger‐potential of busyness or delays; (iii) Avoid surprises, such as sudden moves or actions and explore triggers individually, but make sure not to evoke images of interrogation, and; (iv) Provide overview both with respect to visibility in the clinical room, and to predictability regarding the dental treatment. Although undergoing dental treatment may be challenging for torture‐exposed individuals, it is possible to reduce the predicaments considerably by making feasible adaptions to the treatment and adopting a trauma‐informed approach. Human papillomavirus (HPV) and COVID-19 are contagious diseases for which effective vaccines exist. Dental care professionals' involvement in vaccination campaigns for these conditions has been proposed, but there is a lack of understanding of dentists' roles in vaccination, specifically assessing patients' attitudes around dentists as vaccinators for HPV and COVID-19. Using a cross-sectional design and convenience sampling, a 12-item validated survey was distributed to community members to determine perceptions about dentists' roles in vaccination for HPV and COVID-19. Demographic characteristics, vaccination status, knowledge of the diseases, vaccination intentions, and willingness to receive education about, recommendations for, and administration of vaccine from a dentist were assessed. Responses were analyzed using bivariate and multivariate analysis. Of 618 participants, most were vaccinated previously against HPV and COVID-19 (n = 462 [75.6%] and n = 371 [61.0%], respectively). Participants responded more favorably to dentist involvement in educating, discussing, and administering COVID-19 vaccines than HPV vaccines (P <.05). Participants' knowledge of HPV was found to be low compared with that of COVID-19. There were significant differences across demographic groups, with race most frequently associated with differences in responses to COVID-19 and HPV-related questions. Formative data to develop interventions to support dentists' participation in vaccination campaigns are provided. Participants' acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination over HPV vaccination may reflect the public awareness of COVID-19 vs HPV due to daily relevance of this disease, or the lack of knowledge about HPV, particularly its oropharyngeal impacts. The authors provide evidence to support dentists' involvement in vaccine education and distribution, expanding previous literature into evaluation of a new disease context (COVID-19). Objective: In the United States, adult dental benefits are optional in the state‐managed, public insurance program, Medicaid. States also have the option to adapt their Medicaid program via waivers which pair healthy behaviour incentives (HBI) with cost‐sharing. These waivers have proven ineffective, but the empirical evidence has ignored differences between states. This study aims to evaluate the impact of four state's HBI Medicaid waiver on dental visits among low‐income adult population subject to incentives and cost‐sharing requirements by the HBI waiver. Methods: Analysing biannual data from the Behavioural Risk Factor Surveillance System's Oral Health module (2008–2018) with a Difference‐in‐Differences design, this study estimated the effect of a Healthy Behaviour Incentive waiver on the probability of visiting the dentist in the past year. The three states that implemented an HBI Waiver (Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin) were analysed separately. Secondary outcomes included being uninsured and having all teeth extracted. Matrix Completion methods accounted for dynamic treatment and tested for non‐common trends. Inference was based on randomization inference tests. Results: Only in Michigan was an HBI waiver consistently associated with a significant increase in the probability of a dental visit (Est. = 5.6%‐points, p =.01). There was little convincing evidence that HBI waivers were associated with being uninsured or having all teeth extracted. Conclusions: Between 2010 and 2019, many states have implemented an HBI waiver, each with a different approach to incentivizing dental visits. These implementation differences may explain the heterogeneous effects by state. More work is needed to evaluate how Medicaid waivers impact health outcomes in low‐income populations. Background: The surgical removal of a mandibular third molar (M3M) is a common procedure performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, oral surgeons and general dental practitioners. Apart from risks such as pain, swelling, bruising, bleeding, trismus, alveolar osteitis, postoperative infection and damage to adjacent structures, which are common to all surgical extractions, M3M removal includes the risk of permanent or temporary damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) or the lingual nerve. IAN damage can significantly impact on quality of life (QoL) due to an altered sensation of the lip and chin area. As such, the alternative surgical option of coronectomy, which is the sectioning of the crown from the tooth and deliberate retention of the roots, can be offered to high-risk cases to avoid IAN damage. Case presentation: A 36-year-old female patient was diagnosed with recurrent pericoronitis of her left M3M. Her left M3M was partially erupted and horizontally impacted, with bulbous roots that were in close proximity to the IAN. Due to a higher risk of IAN damage, she underwent a coronectomy procedure of her left M3M instead of a complete removal. She experienced typical postoperative pain and swelling, but no other complications such as altered nerve sensation were reported. The surgical site was healed with full mucosal coverage after 12 weeks. Conclusion: Coronectomy provides a viable alternative surgical option for removal of M3Ms that are at high risk of IAN damage. Dental resorption is a physiological or pathological process that may be initiated and propagated by various mechanisms, including mechanical, surgical, thermal or chemical injury. It refers to non-bacterial destruction of dental tissue resulting from clastic cell activity. It is predominantly asymptomatic in the permanent dentition and may be misdiagnosed and/or poorly understood. This article describes the different types of dental resorption, the features of each and a guide on how to manage them. Some interesting cases are also highlighted. Background: Weight stigma is prevalent within healthcare settings and is an aspect of the lived experience of people living with obesity. There is international evidence of weight stigma in the dental setting, where currently there is also evidence indicating limited training amongst dental professionals regarding obesity or obesity‐related stigma. There has been Australian research and none have included dental support staff. Aims: This cross‐sectional survey aimed to assess stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs of dental professionals (registered general dentists, oral health therapists) and support staff (dental assistants, dental receptionists) working in private and public regional practices in New South Wales and specialists in Special Needs Dentistry across Australia toward people living with obesity. Methods: An anonymous electronic validated survey was administered through REDCap™ to assess stigmatizing attitudes and beliefs held amongst respondents in relation to people living with obesity. Results: Fifty‐three participants completed the survey (n = 33 clinicians, n = 20 support staff). The majority 47/53 (88.7%) held positive attitudes toward people living with obesity. Of the clinicians, 15/33 (45.5%) reported 1 hour or less and 14/33 (42.4%) reported two to 5 hours of obesity‐related education. 14/20 (70%) of the support staff reported no prior education or training about obesity. Of responses reflecting weight stigma, only three clinicians reported negative reactions toward the appearance, or discomfort during examination, of a patient with obesity, or a perception of laziness, compared with normal weight individuals. A higher proportion 4/20 (20%) of support staff reported responses indicating negative attitudes for people with obesity compared with normal weight individuals. Conclusion: Survey responses reflected evidence of weight stigma in both dental professionals and support staff. Background/Objectives: Pain associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) is the main non-odontogenic cause of orofacial pain among youth. Pediatric dentists are often the first healthcare practitioners to perform a comprehensive oral examination in children, which should include evaluation of the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles, and surrounding structures for signs and/or symptoms of TMD. This study assessed pediatric dentists' practice patterns in the screening, diagnosis, and management of TMD. Methods: A 19-item online survey was used to assess pediatric dentists' clinical practice patterns and perceived knowledge and comfort levels in the screening, diagnosis, and management of TMD. The survey was distributed in July 2024, with a one-month window open for the study. Confidence levels and perceived knowledge were compared according to years from graduation and frequency of TMD screening assessment with ANOVA or independent t-test, as appropriate. Open-ended items were analyzed thematically. Results: A total of 206 pediatric dentists and pediatric dentistry residents participated in this study. A share of 72.8% of respondents reported that up to 25% of their patients per week present with signs and symptoms of TMD. About one-fifth of pediatric dental providers never complete a screening history for TMD (22.1%) or a clinical assessment of TMD-related structures (21.6%). There was overall low self-perceived knowledge and confidence among pediatric dentists regarding the diagnosis, screening, and management of TMD in children and adolescents, regardless of the number of years from graduation. Respondents who reported seeing up to 50% of TMD patients reported significantly more knowledge and confidence in diagnosing pediatric TMD than those who encountered fewer TMD patients. An overwhelming majority (81.6%) indicated a need for continuing education courses and training focused on the management of TMD in pediatric patients. Conclusions: Providers reported low confidence and self-perceived knowledge about TMD in pediatric populations, a high rate of referral of patients with TMD, and a particular interest for professional development opportunities focused on management of TMD. Background: Oral health is a critical component of overall well-being. However, students with disabilities (SWDs) face unique challenges in maintaining oral hygiene and accessing dental care. This study aims to explore oral health behaviours, dental care utilisation, and barriers to accessing dental care among SWDs in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, from the perspectives of their parents. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among parents of SWDs in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a validated questionnaire covering oral health behaviours, dental care utilisation, and barriers to care. The sample size was determined based on the SWDs population in the region. Data were analysed using descriptive and analytical statistics, with significant associations identified at p < 0.05. Results: Findings revealed that 45.7% of SWDs brushed irregularly, with only 16.8% brushing twice a day or more. Dental flossing was reported by just 4.3% of SWDs. Emergency-based dental visits were common (51.9%), and 29.5% of SWDs had never visited a dentist. Significant associations were found between maternal education and tooth brushing frequency (p = 0.004) and between parental education and the frequency of dental visits (p = 0.035). The most reported barriers included fear of treatment (47.1%), difficulty finding willing dentists (45.5%), and long wait times for appointments (44.7%). Conclusions: The study emphasises the pressing need for targeted interventions to improve oral hygiene practices and enhance accessibility to dental services for SWDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background/Objectives: Nutrition plays a significant role in preventive medicine, as up to 80% of chronic diseases could be avoided by adhering to healthy dietary principles. The aim of our study was to identify dietary habits, awareness, and nutrition knowledge in a random sample of Polish healthcare students and professionals. Methods: Initially, a total screened sample consisted of 1287 respondents, yet the actual response/participation rate was 634/1287. A validated questionnaire for the Polish population, the Dietary Habits and Nutrition Beliefs Questionnaire (KomPAN), was used for the assessment. Results: The majority of respondents were females (84.2% of medical students and 87.2% of healthcare professionals), current non-smokers (79.6% of medical students and 85.2% of healthcare professionals), and had a normal waist circumference (76.3% of medical students and 63.1% of healthcare professionals). Both clinical dieticians and students studying clinical dietetics received significantly different scores of dietary indexes (pro-healthy pHDI-10 and non-healthy nHDI-14) vs. respective groups of respondents. Both healthcare students and professionals who self-reported better nutritional knowledge indeed yielded significantly better results in the dietary indexes as well as nutritional knowledge scores. The nutrition knowledge score was positively correlated with pHDI-10 and negatively correlated with nHDI-14, BMI, age, and waist circumference. Conclusions: Our results illustrate lifestyle trends among Polish healthcare students and professionals, and such results should encourage the development of evidence-based dietary policies targeting healthcare providers. High-quality continuing nutrition education should be obligatorily provided to all healthcare providers to enhance their dietary awareness as well as ensure high quality of care and outcomes achieved by the Polish healthcare system. Background/Objectives: Managing caries lesions that affect the inner third of the dentin is crucial to ensuring pulp vitality; the clinician must make decisions that will affect the vitality of the tooth. Our purpose is to understand the behavior of Spanish dentists in treating deep cavities and to examine whether variations exist based on their academic training and/or years of professional experience. Methods: This study was approved by the ethics committee of the Balearic Islands CEI-IB. A survey was conducted using the SurveyMonkey platform with 11 questions, the first 4 of which focused on defining the characteristics of the respondents. The following six concerned a clinical case of deep caries in tooth number 4.7, and the last regarded the opinion of the actual treatment of the case. The survey was sent by email in April 2022. The results were analyzed with the SPSS 29.0 program using the chi-square test. Results: A total of 347 responses were obtained (93.95%), and those surveyed stated that they apply minimal intervention concepts in their treatments, with 90.49% performing conservative dentistry treatments daily. A total of 56.48% of the respondents had bachelor's degrees, 12.39% had graduated, 33.14% had a postgraduate degree, 38.90% had a master's degree, and 17% had a doctorate. Most (40.63%) had been in professional practice for 16–30 years. Conclusions: Significant differences were identified regarding years of professional experience in terms of decision-making in methods of treatment and the choice of materials used for pulp protection. Likewise, significant differences were found regarding the academic training of the respondents, the cavity cleaning method selected, and the use of chemical substances for removing carious dentin. We can conclude that academic training and years of professional practice influence decision-making at some points in treating deep caries lesions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare and analyze professional (P chart) and simple (S chart) clinical image evaluation charts for evaluating panoramic radiograph image quality. Methods: Ten evaluators assessed 285 clinical panoramic radiograph images. The evaluators were divided into oral and maxillofacial radiologists (OMFR, n = 5) and general dentist (dentists not specializing in oral and maxillofacial radiology, G, n = 5) groups. For image evaluation, P and S charts provided by the Korean Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology were used. Scores of items for each evaluation chart were used to compare the reliability, correlation, evaluation scores, evaluation time, and preference, and statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics. Results: The S chart showed similar levels of evaluation scores at shorter evaluation time, as compared to the P chart. In the results for each evaluation chart, all analyzed correlations were statistically significant. Total score, image density/contrast/sharpness, and overall image quality items showed a very high positive correlation in the P chart. While the overall range of correlation coefficients was relatively lower in the S chart than the P chart, the same items showed high correlation coefficients. In the preference evaluation, both the professional and generalist groups preferred the S chart. Conclusions: A comparative analysis with the P chart, revisions, and upgrades are needed for the S chart items that showed low correlations in this study, such as artifacts, coverage area, and patient movement. Background: Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) is a genetic condition with fragility of the skin and oral mucosal lining requiring appropriate care and management by dental health professionals. The objective of this scoping review was to comprehensively examine the specialised dental needs of children with Epidermolysis Bullosa and map evidence towards the type, availability, and accessibility of specialised dental care services within various health care systems. Methods: This scoping review was conducted using the JBI Methodology framework for scoping reviews. Five databases were used to source relevant literature: MEDLINE, Embase, Dentistry & Oral Sciences Source, Scopus, and Web of Science during the period 1963–2022. Results: Thirty three published case reports were identified reporting on 45 participants encompassing the dental care and management of children diagnosed with EB aged between 0–12 years of age from an Australian and international health care context. The findings reveal the need for greater awareness amongst health professionals in the management and specialised dental care needs of children and the need for further research, and care pathways for children with EB. Conclusion: There is a dearth of evidence which examines the dental needs of children, in particular referral pathways and timely access to dental health services and professionals. Dentists play an important role in monitoring and providing individualised and specialised oral care and treatment to the child with EB. It is vital that dentists as well as the wider multidisciplinary team have knowledge and understanding of the EB condition in meeting the specialised needs and management of these children.
