2. The effect of urban green roof design on beetle biodiversity.

The biodiversity conservation value of urban green spaces depends in part on design and management. The importance of habitat quality and complexity to species diversity has led to the suggestion that habitat design elements—varied substrate, greater plant diversity, logs or stones—would support invertebrate diversity on green roofs. To evaluate this possibility, we conducted pit-fall trap sampling on three green roofs of simple design (intended primarily for stormwater management), three habitat roofs, and five ground-level green spaces, in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. Beetles (Coleoptera) were sampled as representatives of total invertebrate diversity. Diversity was compared using sample coverage and Hill numbers to account for differences in sample intensity and fundamental differences in species diversity. Both habitat roofs and ground sites consisted of just over 20% native species, while stormwater roofs had about 5% native species, all of which were considered pests. We collected a greater abundance of beetles on the ground compared to roof sites like others have shown. However, when sample completeness is taken into account, habitat roofs had greater Shannon diversity compared to both ground and stormwater roof sites. Habitat roofs had the fewest dominant species representing 5% or more of total abundance, but also the lowest percent of species represented by singletons (27%). These results indicate that green roofs can support different beetle communities compared to those present at ground-level urban green spaces; our results also support previous findings that biodiverse design can reliably increase green roof diversity compared to more simply designed roofs. An increase in beet production at the present stage is possible only with the use of intensive technologies, where the integrated protection of crops from harmful organisms is of great social and economic importance. In the system of measures aimed at increasing the production of beetroots, an important place is the protection of sugar beets from diseases. Successful control of sugar beet diseases is an important reserve for increasing the yield and sugar content of root crops and improving their technological quality. A rather dangerous disease of sugar beet is the root eater, which is widespread throughout Ukraine, especially in the zone of sufficient moisture. Conducting studies to study the effect of certain agro technical measures, as more economically affordable, on the formation of harmful microorganisms that contribute to the development of root and other root diseases during the growing season, the effect of sugar beet concentration in crop rotation. In the experiments, various types of crop rotation were studied: grain-sowing, grain-cultivating (with green manure) and fruit-bearing. The technology for growing crops is generally accepted. Pesticides were not used in the experiments, with the exception of seed dressing. Studies have established that the main causative agent of the root in the conditions of the western forest-steppe of Ukraine are various species of fungi of the genus Fusarium i Aphanomyces cochliondes. The dominance of these pathogens among pathogens causes the most severe defeat of beets in the phase of the first pair of leaflets, as well as the death of plant diseases in a later period - after the formation of planting density. Studies have shown that the lowest prevalence of sugar beet diseases was observed at a saturation level of 17% when they were grown in one place after 5 years (the average degree of development of the root was 14.7%). The development of the disease increased with a decrease in the time of returning to the previous place of cultivation in the rotation. So, on average, over a three-year period, the reduction of this period to four to two years increased the degree of root beetle damage to 15.4-19.8%. At a one-year break and re-sowing, this indicator was 24.4% and 27.2%, respectively. Based on the results obtained, it can be argued that an increase in the concentration of sugar beets in the crop rotation leads to an increase in the distribution of the root.

High Park, at Blenheim in Oxfordshire UK, is a SSSI of great significance for its numerous ancient oaks and the organisms associated with these trees. This book gives a detailed, lavishly illustrated and thoroughly researched description of the biodiversity and natural history of what is by several measures the most significant site for ancient oaks in Europe. It draws together the expertise of more 60 specialists, and reports on the results of in-depth surveys of High Park. Chapters cover different groups, including: flora (including bryophytes), fungi, lichens, molluscs, arachnids, flies, hymenoptera, butterflies, moths, beetles – with a special focus on saproxylic species, bugs, reptiles and amphibians, birds and mammals. Despite their undoubted importance, very few sites with ancient oaks in England, the most important European country for these magnificent trees, have seen a comprehensive published account, adding to the value of this study. Several of the contributing authors describe their survey techniques in some detail, some of which are not widely known. Records are analysed in the various chapters and often compared with data from other similar sites. Overall, the book gives encouraging evidence of the great biodiversity still to be found in England, and should help to stimulate similar efforts to uncover the biodiversity and describe the natural history of ancient parkland and woodland, so that conservation of these sites can be based on firm scientific data.
