Intangible cultural heritage (ICH) has the potential to enhance tourism supply and activate tourism resources. This study constructs an alienation and host authenticity model to analyze the attitudes of ICH performers towards support for tourism. Specifically, it investigates the views of giant puppet show performers at the Mount E'mei Scenic Area in China, which is a nationally recognized and first-selected representative traditional drama project of ICH. By employing an asymmetric configuration modeling approach within qualitative comparative analysis, the study identifies six dimensions of ICH performers' alienation (powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, isolation, self-estrangement, and cultural alienation) and three aspects of their host authenticity (personal value, interpersonal value, and ICH value). Based on these findings, the study confirms the impact of ICH performers' alienation, host authenticity, and demographic characteristics on their support for tourism. This understanding is crucial for the development, growth, and continuity of a tourist destination. Specifically, this study contributes to a new comprehension of the combined model of alienation and host authenticity, as well as the support for tourism by a host community as represented by ICH performers, thereby making a significant contribution to the understanding of the impact of ICH. AbstractRooted in signaling theory and attribution theory, this research investigated how destination social responsibility (DSR) strategy (ability-oriented vs. effort-oriented) impacts residents’ quality of life (QOL) and support for tourism. A mixed-method approach combining semi-structured interviews and scenario-based experiments was conducted. The results revealed that effort-oriented DSR strategies increaseed residents’ QOL and support for tourism more than ability-oriented DSR strategies, in which perceived warmth and communal relationship play a serial mediation effect. Furthermore, the study identifies a key boundary condition: DSR disclosure entity. The relative dominance of effort-oriented DSR strategies weakens when DSR messages are self-disclosed rather than third-party disclosed. These findings advance prior knowledge on DSR and resident QOL and offer destination managers useful guidance on how to adopt DSR strategies to effectively enhance residents’ QOL and support for tourism. Research on residents' attitudes toward tourism suggests an exchange relationship between perceived tourism impact and support among residents. However, there is limited knowledge about the cognitive processes through which such a relationship occurs. This study demonstrates the potential utility of integrating cognitive appraisal and social exchange theories to explain the cognitive process linking perceived tourism impact, quality of life, and residents' support for tourism. We used a survey of residents of Klamath and Linn Counties in the state of Oregon, United States, to obtain data from a random sample of 782 respondents. Using a structural equation modeling approach, we tested three competing theoretical models: the social exchange baseline model, the cognitive appraisal model, and a model integrating both theories. Results suggest that conceptual integration of social exchange and cognitive appraisal theories potentially improves the prediction of residents' support for tourism. Results also suggest that positive tourism attributes and positive affective emotions can play vital roles in the cognitive processes determining residents' support for tourism. The research aims to provide contextual insights into residents’ subjective well-being in tourism-dependent destinations under the impact of neo-imperialism. Drawing upon the bottom-up spillover theory of subjective well-being and social exchange theory, the study examines an integrative model encompassing sense of community, social relations, positive and negative tourism impacts, residents’ subjective well-being, and their support for tourism. A stratified sample of 678 residents was collected in Arzachena, Sardinia, Italy. The findings highlight the prominent role of sense of community, along with social environment and positive tourism impact, in predicting residents’ subjective well-being and their support for tourism. The paper also reveals the significant moderating effects of trust in local tourism authorities. This paper reviews resident tourism attitude research through the lens of the individual- and community-level perceived impacts of and responses to tourism. It explores how perceived impacts of tourism and responses to tourism development have been conceptualised and measured in the existing resident attitudes models published between 1990 and 2020. Three categories of variables were identified and used: antecedent variables, tourism impact variables, and dependent variables. The latter three categories are used to discuss the research topic from the lenses of improvements in measurement instruments. Finally, the paper suggests rethinking the overall conceptualisation of residents' perceptions of and reactions to tourism – it proposes future research directions to distinguish between individual-level and community-level effects and reactions. Ecotourism, as a means of fostering socio-economic level of local communities and contributing to the conservation of forest resources, is important for development in low-income countries. This work investigates the extent to which local people support the continuation of ecotourism during the COVID-19 pandemic and their attitudes towards resource conservation in Banco National Park in Côte d’Ivoire using social exchange theory (SET) as a foundation. A closed-ended questionnaire was used to conduct a survey with 150 informants selected among residents around the park. The data were analyzed using descriptive, correlational, and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approaches. Intensive tourism development in Croatia neither improved nor reduced overall life satisfaction; however, there was a modest but statistically significant negative effect on happiness. The residents were not entirely capable of managing emotional distress, with social psychological factors the main source of negative affections. While crowding stress negatively affected perceived quality of life, it was not an important predictor of support for tourism. Residents' support was not associated with the regional differences in perceived net benefits from tourism. The findings underline the importance of monitoring residents' psychological well-being, adaptation mechanisms, and the historical and social context in which preferences are formed. The risk of overtourism in Croatian destinations may be masked by the status quo bias and maladaptive coping mechanisms.

This study examined the structural relationship involving residents' perception of tourism impacts embedded on material and non-material community capitals, satisfaction, quality of life and whether residents support for further tourism development. Multi method approach was employed to collect data. Focus group discussion with key informants coupled with trend data on wealth, tourism receipts and expenditure complemented the household survey. The hypothesized structural model was empirically tested, involving a randomly selected sample of 408 agro-pastoral residents from three gateway communities; Loliondo, lake Natron and Burrunge in northern Tanzania. It was found that residents support for further tourism development is a function of favourable perceived quality of life, influenced by residents' satisfaction with both material impacts (i.e. increase in physical and financial capital) and non-material impacts (e.g. devolution of power to community and social-cultural cohesion). However, despite positive tourism impacts observed, residents endure costs in land-use in terms of restricted grazing and cultivation in order to sustain tourism. The study drew conclusion that community capital framework extends the traditional tripartite tourism impacts (i.e. economic, social and environment) to other aspects such as: political, cultural, human and built-capital, thus, provide a thorough understanding about tourism impacts in predicting residents' quality of life. This study argues that when overall tourism impacts are positive, residents’ quality of life (QOL) increases, thereby positively affecting their attitudes towards tourism initiatives. The study also identifies several other important relationships that have been ignored in the literature. First, QOL may be a crucial push factor for community commitment, which in turn can trigger support for additional tourism development. Second, communication with tourists may moderate the links between QOL, community commitment, and tourism support. Data were collected from 468 residents living in Manavgat, Turkey and analyzed using structural equation modeling and Hayes’s PROCESS macro. The findings show that as the perception of the positive effects of tourism increases, opinions about the QOL will also be optimistic. Importantly, QOL strengthens both tourism support and community commitment. Additionally, community commitment mediates the link between QOL and attitudes towards tourism development. Community residents' support is one of the key factors affecting the development of tourist destinations. A clear understanding of influencing factors and internal transmission mechanisms in community residents' support for tourism can lend to a theoretical basis and reference for tourism management departments to formulate relevant policies. It is therefore conducive to the rapid recovery and sustainable development of tourism amidst the intermittent outbreaks of COVID-19 pandemic. Taking Guilin as the site for a case study, this study examined the effect of local residents' perceptions of risks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, benefits of tourism and residents' participation in it, government trust, and support for tourism. In particular, the intermediary role of residents' tourism participation and the moderating role of government trust has been explored. A total of 383 residents in Guilin City were selected as the sample for hierarchical regression analysis. The results showed that perceived risks had a significant negative impact on support for tourism, but no significant impact on resident participation. Tourism's perceived benefits had a significant positive impact on both support for and participation in tourism, and residents' participation played a partial mediating role in the relationship between perceived benefits of and support for tourism. Government trust played a significant moderating role in the relationship between tourism's perceived benefits and residents' participation, between perceived benefits and support for tourism, and between residents' participation in and support for tourism. This study examines the relationships between tourism destination competitiveness (TDC), empowerment, and support for tourism among residents. It also examines the role of empowerment as a mediator in the relationship between TDC and residents' support for tourism. A total of 711 respondents were used. This study uses descriptive analysis, two-stage factor analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show that seven antecedents of TDC, namely natural, cultural, contextual competitiveness, complementarity, accommodation, infrastructure, and technology, are identified. Psychological empowerment has most positive effects on five facets of destination competitiveness. The results reveal a mediation effect of empowerment between the destination competitiveness and resident supportive behaviors for tourism. The outcome of this proposed model is support for tourism, which means active supportive actions for tourism among residents. The psychological and economic empowerment dimensions are shown to have positive effects on resident support for tourism. Understanding residents' empowerment and support can be useful for those who develop political policies and action plans for sustainable tourism development. The results can suggest a model for a sustainable destination management, increasing the global reputation of travel destination, and advocacy for sustainable development goals. This article analyzes the effect of social capital on resident attitudes toward tourism and support for tourism based on data collected from 637 residents in Tucker County, West Virginia. Data analysis includes descriptive analysis, factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, structural equation modeling, multigroup analysis, and ANOVA. Results confirm findings of other studies that concern for the potential environmental, and social impacts of tourism and long-term planning have a direct positive effect on support for additional tourism development. In addition to the direct effect of the social and environmental impacts of tourism and long-term planning on support for tourism, this study identified that a common vision and participation in local organizations and informal social groups has a significant direct effect on long-term planning and protection of community values and an indirect effect on support for tourism development. Our research addresses the perceived authenticity by the local community, as a means of enhancing Industrial Heritage Tourism. It aims to explore the influence of perceived authenticity in the future intentions of the local community, concerning a heritage tourism destination. Data was collected from São João da Madeira residents, Portugal, and the sample consisted of 389 respondents. The statistical technique applied was the structural equation model (SEM). Our findings suggest that perceived heritage plays a significant role in residents' attitudes towards tourism development support, their own participation ideals, and their attachment to the place. These findings will contribute to both practical and theoretical research, as they aim to enhance current knowledge on residents' perceived authenticity, being an understudied approach; furthermore, it offers a valuable opportunity to consider residents in the management and planning of an industrial tourism destination. Additionally, it presents the main limitations, suggests future lines of research, and provides practical and theoretical data for both public and private entities, aiming at future improvements in the development of industrial heritage tourism. This study examines the effects of influencing factors on support for tourism development and perceived economic benefits including community attachment, emotional solidarity and interest for participation in snow ski tourism in Iran. In addition, the mediation role of perceived economic benefits between the influencing factors and support for tourism development is examined. The present study relies on a survey of 300 residents of Pooladkaf, a recently known snow ski resort in Iran where tourism is still at its emerging stage. Partial least squares – structural equation modelling has been employed to analyse the data. Evidence from the study indicates that emotional solidarity has positive effect on support for tourism development. However, the hypothesized path relationships between community attachment and resident's interest in participation were not supported. The study also shows that emotional solidarity and interests have positive effects on perceived economic benefits, and indirectly on support for tourism development through perceived economic benefits. The study makes an important theoretical contribution to the extant literature by way of applying a revised framework of social exchange theory to investigate the effects of community attachment, emotional solidarity and interest in participation on perceived economic benefits and support for tourism development in the context of ski tourism. Amid the need for inclusive growth and well-being in sustainable tourism, residents' social sustainability needs must be understood. Based on self-perception and social exchange theories, this study examines residents' perceptions of the social sustainability of food festival events. Focusing on an East-West culinary fusion festival in Macau, the Macau Food Festival, 460 residents are surveyed to ascertain their perceptions of the social sustainability attributes, social sustainability impacts, and quality of life outcomes. Results of six direct and two moderation relationships revealed residents' perceptions of social sustainability attributes of the food festival event are a major predictor of the perceived impacts on the community and resident quality of life. A higher perceived quality of life was found to positively impact place attachment, support for tourism, and prosocial behaviors. The degree to which social sustainability attributes of the food festival impact residents' quality of life, though different, is positive for attendees and non-attendees implying that positive perceptions could be inferred through both introspection and extrospection. It, further, suggests the need for destination management organizations to understand residents' social sustainability needs of the food tourism events to introduce attributes that augment residents' quality of life and positive responses to tourism development. • Residents' social sustainability needs are integral to food tourism event support. • Social sustainability attributes are key antecedents of quality of life. • Positive perceived quality of life triggers positive exchange outcomes. • Different levels of positive self-perception attitudes are observed. • Positive perceptions could be inferred both internally and externally. This article uses the theoretical bases of Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale, Framing Theory, and Self-Identification theory to explore the moderating effect of destination promotional videos on the relationship between residents' empowerment and support for tourism. Initially, a large-scale survey with 1,634 respondents from Chinese Ningbo communities was performed to confirm that the destination promotion videos were widely viewed by the residents. After that, 492 questionnaires were administered to residents to test the moderating effect of media identification on the relationship between residents' empowerment and support for tourism. The findings show that, overall, promotional media moderates the relationship between resident empowerment and support for tourism. Specifically, the use of destination promotion videos has been found to give residents a stronger sense of empowerment within society, increasing their high level of support for tourism. However, in this study's case study of Ningbo, media were not found to moderate the relationship between perceived economic profit and support for tourism. The socio-cultural (β = 0.275, p < 0.05) and environmental (β = 0.309, p < 0.05) benefits of ecotourism are the key determinants of the residents' perception and their support for ecotourism within the park during COVID-19 pandemic. The findings also revealed that economic benefits from ecotourism are linked to residents' perceptions of the qualities of the tourism place (β = 0.363, p < 0.05). Overall, local people around Banco Park recognize that ecotourism produces more benefits than detriments. The COVID-19 pandemic, a painful and unexpected event, has not blunted their support for the continuation of ecotourism. This study calls for the integration of local residents' opinions in the development of the ecotourism sector in Côte d'Ivoire. This study introduces the evolutionary concept of assortative sociality and explores how it moderates pandemic anxiety effects on attitudes towards tourism and travel decisions. Based on a large-scale online survey (N = 4630) conducted in three European countries, we demonstrate that COVID-19 anxiety triggered assortative sociality, which reflects both xenophobic and ethnocentric traits. This changes perceptions of domestic and international travel attractiveness, and further leads to travel choices prioritizing domestic destinations. At the same time, xenophobic and ethnocentric traits also affected citizen attitudes towards supporting the domestic tourism industry ‒ an industry that accommodates foreigners. The importance of examining perceived justice has grown in both practice and academic research. However, limited attention has been given to its application in the destination context. Drawing on justice and Weber's theory of rationality, this study investigated how residents' perceived justice interacts with their quality of life and support for tourism and whether personal economic benefits moderate these relationships. Results from 412 respondents from rural destinations suggest that three justice dimensions positively impact locals' quality of life and support for tourism.
