In this paper, we numerically study the influence of saturable absorber parameters, namely, modulation depth, recovery time, and saturation energy, on the performance of an ultrafast fiber laser that is mode-locked by a hybrid scheme of a saturation absorber (SA) and a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Maps of mode-locked states related to intracavity wave-plates are created to evaluate the operation of hybrid mode-locking under different modulation depths of the SA. Along with the improvement of modulation depth of the SA, the mode-locked pulse results from a combination effect of the SA and NPR. The numerical analysis reveals that the SA parameters can significantly impact the pulse profile, peak power, and operation state. Moreover, they can also impact the selection of NPR mode-locked points, resulting in variation in stable single pulse output. A higher modulation depth can suppress the unstable multiple pulses' operation and convert them into harmonic mode-locked pulses. The profiles of the edge of rectangular sheets of paper folded so as to join opposite edges were measured and compared with the profiles calculated with the theory of elasticity. This paper presents a numerical analysis, using the rigorous-coupled-wave-analysis method, of microwave and far-IR radiation scattering on thin conductive films of nanometer thickness under the condition of total internal reflection. Transmittance, reflection, and absorption studies have shown the possibility of overcoming the 50% absorption limit with frequency-independent behavior; the absorption above the critical angle reaches values greater than 90%. In addition, the influence of such thin metal-dielectric structure on the Goos–Hänchen shift is considered. At maximum absorption, calculations showed its absence in both TE and TM polarizations. The mode manipulation of Lamb waves plays an important role in damage detection and identification of damage types, location, and size. In this paper, we propose a composite phononic crystal (PC) plate with antisymmetric and symmetric PCs for realizing mode conversion from A0 to S0 mode of Lamb waves. The theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental validation are introduced and the mode conversion mechanism of the composite PC plate is systematically investigated. The effect of geometrical parameters on band structures of antisymmetric and symmetric PCs is first discussed. Then multi-physics field simulation models are developed and in-plane displacement fields are obtained in numerical simulations, which shows that the mode conversion is enhanced when the period number of the antisymmetric PC decreases and that of symmetric the PC increases. The composite PC plate specimens are fabricated with precision wire cutting technology for experimental measurements and the self-designed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) comb transducer is used to stimulate the Lamb waves. The experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulations, which demonstrate that the proposed composite PC plate can achieve the mode conversion from A0 to S0 mode of Lamb waves. In this paper, the cavitation and flow characteristics of the unsteady liquid nitrogen (LN2) cavitating flow in a submersible pump are investigated through both experimental and numerical approaches. The performance curve of the LN2 submersible pump is obtained via experimental measurement. Numerical simulations are performed using a modified shear stress transport k–ω turbulence model, incorporating corrections for rotation and thermal effects as per the Schnerr–Sauer cavitation model. The numerical framework is verified by comparing the cavitation morphology features with previously reported visual data of the LN2 inducer and aligning pump performance data with those obtained from experimental tests of the LN2 submersible pump. The results indicate that cavitation at the designed flow rate predominantly manifests as tip clearance vortex cavitation in the inducer. Increased flow rates exacerbate cavitation, potentially obstructing the flow passage of the impeller. The vortex identification method and the vorticity transport equation are employed to identify the vortex structures and analyze the interaction between cavitation and vortices in the unsteady LN2 cavitating flow. The vortex structures primarily concentrate at the outlet of the impeller flow passage, largely attributed to the vortex dilation term and baroclinic torque. The influence of thermal effects on the cavitation flow of submersible pumps is analyzed. An entropy production analysis model, comprehensively involving various contributing factors, is proposed and utilized to accurately predict the entropy production rate within the pump. Piezoelectric energy harvesting faces a primary challenge in effectively capturing low-orbit vibration energy across a broad frequency range. In this paper, we present a tri-stable piezoelectric energy harvester that incorporates a dynamic amplifier (TPEH + DM), specifically designed for efficient collection of low-orbit vibration energy. The TPEH + DM comprises a piezoelectric cantilever beam connected to an innovative dynamic amplifier at its restrained end, which enhances both the rotational and lateral displacement of the piezoelectric cantilever beam simultaneously. The governing coupled differential equations of motion for the system is derived based on the Lagrange equation, and analytical expressions for its steady-state response are obtained using the multi-scale method. The influence of factors such as the mass and the stiffness ratio of the dynamic amplifier on the steady-state dynamic output characteristics of the system is investigated using the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. The results indicate that TPEH + DM exhibits significantly improved energy harvesting performance compared to TPEH under low-orbit external excitations. The bandwidth of inter-well motion and the TPEH + DM power output may be further increased by suitably modifying the relative stiffness between the cantilever beam and the dynamic amplifier. In addition, we analyze the time-domain behavior of the system's output voltage using the ode45 solver under various external excitation frequencies and intensities. The results demonstrate that with appropriate adjustments to the mass of the tip magnet and the stiffness ratio of the dynamic amplifier, the proposed TPEH + DM system can harvest energy efficiently across a broad frequency range, even under low-orbit excitations. Cavitation-induced vortex and energy loss are critical topics in the field of hydraulic machinery. Through a combination of experimental and numerical analysis, this paper investigates how blade loading affects vortical structures and energy loss during cavitation in a waterjet pump. The flow rate and cavitation conditions changed blade tip pressure loading, which significantly affected the trajectories of the primary tip leakage vortex cavitation and secondary tip leakage vortex cavitation. A considerable pressure gradient at the attached cavity closure region leads to a wall reentrant jet and a side-entrant jet, resulting in an attached vortex under the cavitation developing stage and severe stage. The development of the attached vortex leads to the shedding of attached cavities. Furthermore, the blade tip pressure difference loading significantly alters the distribution of tip leakage vortex and gives rise to a perpendicular leakage vortex (PLV). The PLV entrains the shedding cavities and forms a perpendicular cavitation vortex. These complex vortical structures induced by cavitation inevitably enhance enstrophy and lead to entropy production in the pump. The entropy production terms of viscous dissipation, turbulent dissipation, and the wall effect react differently to the development of cavitation. As the cavitation stages developed and became more severe, wall entropy production (S3) decreased. While turbulent dissipative entropy production S2 due to mixing losses occurring in the tip region increased sharply, which dominates the total entropy production S and results in an increase in S. This paper analyzes the liquid atomization mechanisms of an N-heptane spray jet emerging from a swirl simplex atomizer using numerical and experimental techniques. In particular, a direct seamless coupled Volume of Fluid and Lagrangian Particle Tracking approach together with adaptive mesh refinement within the Large Eddy Simulation framework offers a suitable way to accurately simulate the complex behavior of spray atomization, spray evolution, and droplet dispersion as a whole while using manageable computational cost. The achieved simulation results are first presented in terms of qualitative properties, characteristics of liquid sheet, air core generation, flow recirculation zones, and vortex patterns. For validation purposes, the numerical results are then compared with detailed experimental data obtained by a two-component Phase Doppler Anemometry technique. The assessment includes especially droplet statistics which strongly determine subsequent possible spray combustion process and related product and species emissions. The overall reported agreement demonstrates the capability of the adopted methodology in predicting and comprehensively investigating the complex phenomena associated with a pressure swirl fuel atomizer. This paper focuses on the numerical solutions of a six-compartment fractional model with Caputo derivative. In this model, we obtain non-negative and bounded solutions, equilibrium points, and the basic reproduction number and analyze the stability of disease free equilibrium point. The existence and uniqueness of the solution are proven by employing the Picard–Lindelof approach and fixed point theory. The product–integral trapezoidal rule is employed to simulate the system of FODEs (fractional ordinary differential equations). The numerical results are presented in the form of graphs for each compartment. The powder mixed electrical discharge machining (PMEDM) process was simulated via finite element analysis in the current study to assess heat behavior and material removal rate. The goal of this paper is to conduct a thorough experimental and thermal examination of electrical discharge machining (EDM) in order to forecast its cutting characteristics and subsequently optimize the output variables using a response surface methodology for simulations and choosing the most suitable set of process variables related to the PMEDM process. This study's objective is to design a 2D axisymmetrical transient thermal model that might also describe the physics of material removal in a single spark PMEDM operation on a Titanium Zirconium Molybdenum (TZM) superalloy. ANSYS (version 9.1) software is used to perform transient heat transfer simulations to determine the temperature profile with the amount of material removal at different current, pulse on and off times, gap voltages, and fraction of heat that enters the specimen. The PMEDM process produced craters with a lower diameter and depth, which increased the material removal rate and enhanced the surfacing quality. Compared to the conventional EDM process, the inclusion of powder raised the heat flux given to the work material by 10%–12%. It has been determined that with the single spark modeling technique, the temperature significantly dropped in both the radial and depth directions. Round-end aluminum alloy tube concrete columns had good durability and were very economical, but the low strength and elastic modulus of aluminum alloy led to the need for improvement in performance. This paper proposes carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) strip reinforced round-end aluminum alloy tube concrete (CREAC) columns and investigates their mechanical properties under axial compression loads. A total of eight specimens were tested, including seven CFRP reinforced specimens and one control specimen. The effects of the width, spacing, and number of layers of CFRP strips on the axial compression performance of CREAC under the same amount of CFRP were studied. The experimental results indicate that the main failure modes of the specimen are the buckling of round-end aluminum alloy tubes and the fracture of CFRP strips. The CFRP strip can significantly improve the ultimate bearing capacity of the specimen, with a maximum increase of 15.3% in the test range. When the amount of CFRP is the same, as the number of CFRP strips decreases, the bearing capacity and ductility deteriorate. Increasing the width and thickness of CFRP strips significantly improves ductility. On the basis of the validated finite element model, parameter analysis was conducted, and the calculation method for stability coefficients was fitted. A calculation method for axial compression bearing capacity suitable for CREAC was proposed, with a maximum error of less than 1% between the predicted results and experimental results. In response to the need for efficient, small-scale power sources for applications such as ocean observation and navigation, this paper presents the design, modeling, fabrication, testing, and analysis of a compact point-absorber wave energy converter (PAWEC) equipped with a mechanical direct-drive power takeoff (PTO) mechanism. The motivation is to address the mismatch between the natural frequencies of conventional PAWECs and dominant ocean wave frequencies, which limits energy capture. The primary objective is to enhance the efficiency of small-scale wave energy converters (WEC) without increasing the buoy size. To achieve this, we introduce a novel design element: an added mass plate (AMP) attached to the buoy. The AMP is devised to increase the WEC added mass and natural period, thereby aligning its natural frequency with dominant ocean wave frequencies. In our case study of a scaled model (1:2.2), the AMP effectively doubled the added mass of the WEC and increased its natural period by 32%. The WEC incorporates a rack and pinion mechanical motion rectifier-type PTO to convert the heave oscillations of the buoy into unidirectional rotation. The scaled model was tested in a wave basin facility with regular waves at zero angle of incidence. The WEC with AMP achieved a maximum root mean square power of 9.34 W, a nearly 30% increase compared to the conventional configuration without AMP, which produced 7.12 W under similar wave conditions. Numerical analysis using the boundary element method in the frequency domain for regular waves confirmed these findings. Finally, it has been derived that the proposed WEC, equipped with an AMP, offers enhanced efficiency in longer wave periods without the need for a larger buoy, establishing its viability as a power source for navigational buoys. In this Brief Communication, we examine in detail the motion of light particles—or dense gas bubbles—rising under gravity in a cellular flow. We follow the methodology of Maxey [Phys. Fluids 30, 1915 (1987)], and we examine a range of parameters not fully discussed in the past, corresponding to particles lighter and yet more inertial than the surrounding fluid if the added mass effect is considered. We observe a nonmonotonic behavior of the particle rise velocity, which exhibits a maximum for density of the particles only slightly smaller than the density of the fluid. The maximum value of the average rise velocity corresponding to the “optimum” density is several times (more than 40) higher than those obtained for small density changes around the optimum. The occurrence of this maximum is due to the combined effects of particle inertia and fluid added mass, which segregate the rising particles into specific, fast pathlines where the local fluid velocity adds to the particle gravitational velocity. This paper's goal is to investigate if a gob-side entry retention technique combined with a surrounding rock support system is feasible in three soft coal seams. Field engineering confirmed the results of numerical simulation tests and similar simulation tests, which were conducted in accordance with the actual geological conditions of Zhaojiazhai Mine. The following conclusions are reached after studying the technology and process parameter of the gob-side entry retaining in three soft coal seams in conjunction with theoretical calculations: the coal seam of Zhaojiazhai Coal Mine's 12 209 working face is a part of the soft coal seam, and its loose circle is approximately 1.8 m. The expansion roadway size is 3.5 m, and the potential loose circle range is 1.32 m, according to the same model and numerical simulation test. The support scheme after the expansion of the road working face is determined to be the "anchor rod + anchor cable + hydraulic lifting shed" support method. Furthermore, this article suggests a building method for the reinforcement and enlargement of gob-side entry retaining in three-soft thick coal seam by theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. Roadway shotcrete, advance grouting, building of a large deformation anchor cable and continuous resistance, single column lifting shed, hydraulic lifting shed, and roadway enlargement in advance are all steps in the procedure. Furthermore, an analysis is conducted on the deformation features of the surrounding rock in gob-side entry retention. The study highlights the significance of actively supporting the surrounding rock, fortifying the roof support, guaranteeing the stiffness compatibility between the shoulder filling body and the surrounding rock on the roof, boosting the wall's strength and stability, and enhancing the roadway's stability. The development of hydrodynamic instabilities has a significant impact on the operation of laser fusion systems. During radiation compression, the shells of a target are accelerated, resulting in the growth of perturbations at their interfaces. In this paper, we study the influence of density perturbations on the stability of the contact boundary during accelerated motion. The analysis is performed in a two-dimensional planar formulation using the linear approximation and assuming a weak spatial dependence on the temperature near the contact boundary. Due to the consideration of small time intervals, the phenomenon of heat conduction is not taken into account. The cases of acceleration of a medium described by the Mie–Grüneisen equation of state (EoS) into a vacuum and of acceleration of two contacting media, each described by the ideal plasma EoS, are considered. The time dependence of the amplitude of the boundary perturbation on time is obtained. The obtained values are in agreement with the results of numerical analysis. It is shown that the boundary curvature occurs independently of the acceleration direction. The theoretical results are compared with numerical results for laser fusion systems. This paper investigated the differences for the hydraulic characteristics in a single fracture between using the Navier–Stokes (N–S) equation and Darcy's law, which would be benefit to understand the seepage mechanism in the fracture. A numerical model of the radial flow was established considering the aperture size and water injection flow rate. Some conclusion could be given. First, the Darcy's law only described the seepage characteristics when the flow rate was small when the flow rate and pressure response have a linear relationship. While the N–S equation could describe the linear and nonlinear seepage characteristics, resulting in a better model of the actual fracture seepage flow. Second, the aperture size had a limited influence on the water pressure and seepage velocity inside the fracture when the flow rate was small. It began to have a significant impact influence on the seepage characteristics inside the fracture with the aperture increased. Third, the flow–pressure response conformed to the Forchheimer equation in the fracture. The critical Reynold number would decrease from 1.2 to 0.0116 when fracture aperture decreased from 3 to 0.5 mm using the N–S equation. The degree of nonlinearity of the fluid flow increases with fracture roughness increasing. This work gave a guidance to the difference in the two seepage theories and correction for the result by Darcy law, which was widely used in the engineering calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The potential-based multiphase lattice Boltzmann models are widely used because they root in thermodynamics and evade the interface tracking or integrating. This paper investigates several potential-based models with the common equations of state (EOS) by the theoretical analyses and numerical computations of the thermodynamic consistency and spurious currents. Surprisingly, the Shan–Chen model presents a superior accuracy compared to the Zhang–Chen models, although they are mathematically equivalent. We find that the great improvement is attributed to the square root form of the pseudopotential model, which significantly lessens the error of numerical gradient calculation. Inspired by the improvement, a general formula φ ′ = n − 1 φ 1 − n ∂ x (φ n) is introduced for calculating the gradient, and the coefficient n = 0.1 yields better results than n = 0.5 , which is equal to the pseudopotential model. This scheme is further applied to optimize the evaluation of the chemical potential model. The improved chemical potential model displays lower numerical errors in the liquid–gas transition region and smaller spurious currents near the curved phase interface than the pseudopotential model. This paper investigates biological models that represent the transition equation from a system in the past to a system in the future. It is shown that finite-time Lyapunov exponents calculated along a locally pullback attractive solution are efficient indicators (early-warning signals) of the presence of a tipping point. Precise time-dependent transitions with concave or d-concave variation in the state variable giving rise to scenarios of rate-induced tracking are shown. They are classified depending on the internal dynamics of the set of bounded solutions. In this paper, the process of encapsulating solid particle(s) into liquid droplets in a high-throughput flow-focusing microchannel is investigated numerically. Open source software is used, which computes fluid flow in an Eulerian framework and particle dynamics with a Lagrangian approach. Previous studies have demonstrated that if no action is taken, particles suspended in a liquid passing through a flow-focusing microchannel will be encapsulated at random. This is perhaps unsurprising, but in one such study, less than 35% of droplets were found to contain exactly one particle. The two aims of this study are (i) to explore the flow patterns arising in a microfluidic channel and (ii) to elucidate the effect of salient governing parameters on encapsulation efficiency (i.e., the fraction of droplets encapsulating one particle) by focusing on ordering the particles before reaching the droplet generation section. Following validation against experimental reference data, the capillary number is varied across the three droplet generation regimes: squeezing, dripping, and jetting. We demonstrate that under certain conditions, an encapsulation frequency of 100% can be achieved with ordered particles, but in most cases, this is significantly lower. We examine the flow field to help understand how this non-uniform distribution of particles occurs. Notably, we find the dripping to be the best option for particle encapsulation and in this case extend the study to explore the effect of junction angle, finding that an angle of 60 ° is the most favorable. This paper aims at the numerical analysis of the influence of tip clearance size on the pre-stall flow features of a transonic high-speed compressor by applying the throttle model at the exit of the compressor computational domain. Steady and unsteady calculations have been performed for design, double, and triple tip clearance sizes. The transition of the stall inception type when increasing the tip clearance size and the underlying flow physics has been analyzed in detail. The results show that the stall inception type transforms from spike to modal as the size of the tip clearance changes from design to triple tip clearance. The influence of the tip clearance size on the forward spillage of the tip leakage vortex near the stall limit, which is one of the two criteria for spike stall inception, is crucial for which type of stall inception would appear. For the design clearance case, a remarkable forward spillage of the tip leakage vortex occurs near the stall limit, leading to a typical strong spike stall inception. In the condition of double clearance, the intensity of tip leakage vortex spillage was weakened because the increase in the clearance size allows more low momentum tip leakage flow to go through the clearance instead of spilling from the leading edge. Thus, a weaker spike-type inception containing the content of modal disturbances was induced. Under the triple clearance condition, the high entropy gradient interface is located inside the blade passages all the time; thus, a typical modal-type stall inception appears. Different compact upwind schemes have been developed and used to numerically approximate a convection term in the Navier–Stokes equation. With different point stencils, the compact upwind schemes are mainly classified as the central, the function-biased, and the derivative-biased compact upwind schemes. They have different numerical characteristics. In this paper, by using Fourier analysis and numerical test, it is found that the function-biased compact upwind schemes have better resolution properties than the derivative-biased compact upwind schemes. Furthermore, an optimization method named dispersion-dissipation-balancing (DDB) optimization is proposed, by which better spectral resolution of these schemes is obtained by optimizing coefficients of these schemes based on the balance between a dispersion error and a dissipation error. Compared with the popular dispersion-relation-preserving (DRP) optimization method, the schemes optimized by the DDB method have proper dispersion and dissipation errors. They eliminate both the nonphysical oscillations and spurious vortices in the numerical case of the double shear layers flow. Birhythmicity is evident in many nonlinear systems, which include physical and biological systems. In some living systems, birhythmicity is necessary for response to the varying environment while unnecessary in some physical systems as it limits their efficiency. Therefore, its control is an important area of research. This paper proposes a space-dependent intermittent control scheme capable of controlling birhythmicity in various dynamical systems. We apply the proposed control scheme in five nonlinear systems from diverse branches of natural science and demonstrate that the scheme is efficient enough to control the birhythmic oscillations in all the systems. We derive the analytical condition for controlling birhythmicity by applying harmonic decomposition and energy balance methods in a birhythmic van der Pol oscillator. Further, the efficacy of the control scheme is investigated through numerical and bifurcation analyses in a wide parameter space. This paper presents a numerical analysis of the melting dynamics of n-octadecane in microgravity. The phase change material (PCM) is held in a rectangular container of aspect ratio Γ = L / H = 1.5 , and the upper boundary is open to a layer of air, which both exchanges heat with the PCM and generates thermocapillary convection in the liquid phase via the Marangoni effect. This study extends the analysis conducted by Martinez et al. ["Effect of surface heat exchange on phase change materials melting with thermocapillary flow in microgravity," Phys. Fluids 33, 083611 (2021)] in which the air temperature was assumed to vary linearly between the temperatures applied at the lateral walls. Two different scenarios are analyzed here. In the first case, the air temperature is assumed to be homogeneous and equal to the mean value of the temperatures applied at the lateral walls throughout the melting process. In the second case, the air temperature is similarly taken to be constant but with a value of 23 °C, which is representative of a laboratory environment, including many microgravity platforms. The investigation reveals the effect of key dimensionless parameters, including the Marangoni number (Ma), which quantifies the heat transport due to the thermocapillary flow, and the Biot number (Bi), which characterizes the heat exchanged across the PCM/air interface. In contrast to previous analyses of pattern selection, only oscillatory standing (pulsating) waves are observed under these boundary conditions. In this paper, we present a well-organized method to estimate the one-dimensional fractional Rayleigh–Stokes model using the construction of orthogonal Gegenbauer polynomials (GBPs) and Lagrange square interpolation to estimate the time derivative. Therefore, we design an authentic and fast numerical calculation approach based on the elaborated convergence rate recovery method. The matrix of the derivative operation of an orthogonal GBP is gained by employing the characteristic of this type of polynomial. Locally resonant metamaterial flat panels have proved to potentially exhibit extraordinary sound transmission loss properties when the resonance frequency of the resonators is tuned to the coincidence frequency region. Whether this technique is also effective to address the ring frequency effect for curved panels is investigated in this paper. For this purpose, a cylindrical shell, as a representation of curved panels, is studied from a theoretical and numerical point of view, with a specific focus on the transmission loss behaviour around the ring frequency region when the shell is mounted with local resonators. The influence from the resonators is presented and compared with that for a flat panel. An inverse effect of the resonators is observed on the sound transmission loss between the metamaterial cylindrical shell and the metamaterial flat panel when the resonance frequency of the resonators is tuned to be below or above the ring or coincidence frequency, respectively. Rather than the extraordinary improvement observed for the metamaterial flat panel, tuning such conventional resonators to the ring frequency of curved panels generates two side dips despite a sharp improvement at the ring frequency itself. This phenomenon is explained from an effective impedance point of view developed in this paper. The approach proposed and the conclusions provided may subsequently allow for the design of suitable resonators in order to resolve the ring frequency effect for curved panels. General transformation expressions of the second-order non-adiabatic Hamiltonian of the atomic nuclei, including the kinetic-energy correction terms, are derived upon the change from laboratory-fixed Cartesian coordinates to general curvilinear coordinate systems commonly used in rovibrational computations. The kinetic-energy or so-called "mass-correction" tensor elements are computed with the stochastic variational method and floating explicitly correlated Gaussian functions for the H 2 + molecular ion in its ground electronic state. {Further numerical applications for the 4 He 2 + molecular ion are presented in the forthcoming paper, Paper II [E. GaN-based heterostructures have been used in high-power radio frequency applications for a number of years due to the wide bandgap of GaN and high values of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization, resulting in high breakdown voltages and high 2D carrier concentrations. However, the accurate modeling of low-field electron mobility within such structures remains a topic of interest. This paper presents a comprehensive numerical model for calculating the carrier mobility within a 2D electron gas in Al x Ga 1 − x N/GaN high electron mobility transistors. The model is based on solving the Schrödinger and Poisson equations self-consistently, taking into account the polarization charges at material interfaces and performing semi-classical numerical calculations of low-field electron mobility within the momentum relaxation time approximation, taking into account all relevant scattering mechanisms. Both intra- and inter-subband transitions are considered, and the differences in intra- and inter-subband scattering rates are analyzed for some of the key scattering mechanisms. The importance of including inter-subband transitions in the calculations is demonstrated by comparing the calculated results with experimentally measured mobilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we show the phenomenon of negative reflection occurring in a mechanical phononic structure, consisting of a grating of fixed inclusions embedded in a linear elastic matrix. The negative reflection is not due to the introduction of a subwavelength metastructure or materials with negative mechanical properties. Numerical analyses for out-of-plane shear waves demonstrate that there exist frequencies at which most of the incident energy is reflected at negative angles. The effect is symmetric with respect to a line that is not parallel to the normal direction to the grating structure. Simulations at different angles of incidence and computations of the energy fluxes show that negative reflection is achievable in a wide range of loading conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reverse wake-induced vibration (RWIV) of two tandem cylinders with the downstream one fixed is numerically studied in this paper; Reynolds number is set as 150 (Re = 150). The effect of different spacing ratios (α) ranging from 3 to 6 with a gap of 0.5 is simulated to investigate the vibration characteristics of RWIV, where the spacing ratio (α) is defined as the nondimensional ratio of the center-to-center separation between the cylinders. As the spacing ratio increases from 3 to 6, RWIV shows a transition from galloping to vortex-induced vibration (VIV), which is also a reverse phenomenon compared to wake-induced vibration (WIV). As to the wake mode, two different types of vortex motion (2S - 2P - 2S and 2S - 2P) are observed within the given range of spacing ratio. Empirical modal decomposition is also applied to further analyze the vibration characteristics of galloping and VIV in RWIV. When the system shows galloping, the number of decomposed modes is larger with the increasing reduced velocity, and different vibration modes show evident mutual anisotropy. Liquid viscosity has a potential effect on bubble dynamics. This paper is concerned with bubble dynamics in a compressible viscous liquid near the free surface. The liquid–gas flow is modeled using the Eulerian finite element method coupled with the volume of fluid method. The numerical results have been shown to be in excellent agreement with those from the spherical bubble theory and experiment. Parametric studies are carried out regarding the Reynolds number Re and the stand-off parameter γd. It clearly demonstrated that the liquid viscosity inhibits bubble pulsation, jet flow, free surface jet, and bubble splitting. Quantitatively, as Reynolds number Re decreases, the maximum bubble volume, jet tip velocity, free surface spike, and crown height decrease, and the toroidal bubble splitting weakens. As the stand-off parameter γd increases, the maximum bubble volume, jet velocity, and bubble average pressure peak increase while the height of the free surface spike decreases. Close observation reveals that the free surface crown tends to disappear at small Re or large γd, further indicating the complex mechanism behind the crown spike evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is widely used in the aerospace industry due to its high strength and lightweight characteristics, making it crucial to ensure the reliability of these materials. This has led to an increasing focus on research on the health monitoring technologies of aerospace materials. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive and cost-effective technology that has the potential to realize real-time health monitoring of materials by measuring changes in electrical parameters. This paper investigates the application of EIT for direct 3D reconstruction of damage in CFRP laminates with significant conductivity anisotropy distribution. Based on the corrected sensitivity matrix formula, the direct 3D image reconstruction method combined with the fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm (FISTA) is proposed to achieve damage imaging of CFRP laminates in the inverse problem. The fast convergence of the FISTA makes it possible to solve complex inverse problems. The numerical simulation results indicate that, compared with 2D EIT, the proposed method is more capable of providing damage information, especially in the depth direction. This research plays a constructive role in realizing 3D image reconstruction of CFRP material damage and has significant implications for improving the reliability and safety of CFRP materials in aerospace applications. Water entry is a fluid–structure interaction process closely related to the ocean environment. Repeated water entries take place when ships are sailing in an ocean environment, e.g., ocean currents, which greatly affect the ship's safety and stability in navigation. In this paper, we adopt a smoothed particle hydrodynamics method to numerically study the water entry of a bow-flare ship body section under ocean currents. We simulate the process of water entry under different current velocities and analyze in detail the fluid field regarding the free surface evolution, the velocity and pressure distributions, and the body's forces and motions. It is revealed that the ocean current can induce multidirectional fluid impacts, and a stagnation point with zero velocity occurs at the upstream side. Asymmetric fluid fields including the evolution of the free surface and the velocity and pressure distributions around the body can also be found. In addition, discrepancies are caused in the formation time and the range of the high-pressure region. These fluid field changes greatly affect the ship body's dynamic responses. However, the effects of the ocean current are mainly reflected in the direction of the current flow and are relatively small in the direction perpendicular to the flow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we investigated the effectiveness of the strength of axial flow and suction/injection for the viscous mode (type II) instability within the boundary layer of a rotating disk. To investigate the lower branch, we scaled the viscous mode by using a familiar triple-deck structure analogous to that which was found for Blasius flow over a flat plate. We also analyzed the linear stability behavior of high-Reynolds laminar-turbulent transition. To describe the stationary type II wavenumber and waveangle, we conducted an asymptotic analysis followed by a comparison with the type I mode. We found that a positive axial flow had a stabilizing effect and vice versa a negative axial flow exhibited a destabilizing effect. The results were consistent with previous studies in the literature for positive axial flow, as disturbances were advected downstream in the radial direction. Regarding the suction/injection study, we found suction to be stabilizing, which aligns with previous results in the literature although, conversely, the injection was found to be destabilizing. For the numerical analysis, we found that parameters which result in an increase or decrease of the critical Reynolds number led to a stabilization or destabilization of the flow, respectively. Finally, we compared the asymptotic and numerical stability results for both types I and II followed by the critical Reynolds numbers comparisons, which were found to be consistent in general with results in the literature. This paper introduced a novel energy harvester with a tunnel and drop-shaped bluffbody for self-actuation and wind speed sensing. The harvester exhibits dual vibrating mechanisms of vortex-induced vibration (VIV) and galloping. Theoretical and numerical analyses were conducted to study the energy conversion relationship and fluid field of the harvester, and the conclusions were verified by controlled variable experiments. The optimal design values of inlet angle I 40°, polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) angle P 10°, and exit angle E 10° were demonstrated with the highest output of 10.42 Vp-p at the wind speed of 18 m/s. The output voltage of the PVDF energy harvester has a reliable relationship with the wind speed as a function of wind speed sensor, which could be applied for meteorological information collection and fluid flow rate monitoring with further study conducted underwater. When a low-voltage circuit breaker (LVCB) breaks a high current, the contact erosion caused by the arc greatly reduces the LVCB's breaking performance and service lifetime. Therefore, this paper uses AgW alloy contacts as a research object, which are commonly used for breaking high currents, and establishes a contact erosion model for an LVCB with a breaking current of 14 kA. The model considers the energy balance of a contact surface and uses a solidification and melting model and a dynamic mesh model to deal with the phase transition problem of the contact material and introduces the arc movement into this model. Using this model, the contact melting and evaporation width, erosion depth, erosion rate, and erosion mass are calculated when Ag and AgW30 and AgW70 alloys are used as contact materials. The influence of W-content on the erosion characteristics of a contact is analyzed. The results show that, although the introduction of element W significantly reduces the erosion mass, it advances the time when the melting point and boiling point are reached. The position, width, and depth of the melting pool and melting layer thickness change with the movement of the arc. In the process of contact erosion considering the movement of the arc, the introduction of W element will increase the width of the molten pool and the solidification time of the molten material. Especially when the mass percentage of element W in the contact material reached 70%, the solidification time of the molten material greatly increased, which weakened the welding resistance of the contact. We investigate different approaches to derive the proper Floquet-based quantum–classical Liouville equation (F-QCLE) for laser-driven electron-nuclear dynamics. The first approach projects the operator form of the standard QCLE onto the diabatic Floquet basis and then transforms to the adiabatic representation. The second approach directly projects the QCLE onto the Floquet adiabatic basis. Both approaches yield a form that is similar to the usual QCLE with two modifications: (1) The electronic degrees of freedom are expanded to infinite dimension and (2) the nuclear motion follows Floquet quasi-energy surfaces. However, the second approach includes an additional cross derivative force due to the dual dependence on time and nuclear motion of the Floquet adiabatic states. Our analysis and numerical tests indicate that this cross derivative force is a fictitious artifact, suggesting that one cannot safely exchange the order of Floquet state projection with adiabatic transformation. Our results are in accord with similar findings by Izmaylov et al., [J. Chem. Phys. 140, 084104 (2014)] who found that transforming to the adiabatic representation must always be the last operation applied, although now we have extended this result to a time-dependent Hamiltonian. In this paper, the stress-induced twin interface nucleation in single-crystalline NiMnGa alloys is studied through theoretical analyses and numerical simulations. First, the mechanical governing system for a single-crystalline NiMnGa sample is formulated, which contains the mechanical field equation and the twin interface movement criteria. To complete the governing system, the nucleations of twin interfaces in the NiMnGa sample under general mechanical loads are investigated. By considering the connection conditions of some physical quantities across a "fictitious" twin interface, the explicit expression of the configurational force on the twin interface is derived. Then, based on the twin interface movement criteria, a practical scheme for predicting the twin interface nucleation is proposed. This scheme can be integrated into the iterative numerical algorithm for solving the mechanical governing system. To demonstrate the efficiency of this scheme, some simulation results are presented for two typical deformations of a NiMnGa sample (i.e., the axial compression and the bending deformation), which show good consistency with the experimental results. By analyzing the evolution properties of the configurational forces on the possible nucleation interfaces, the mechanism responsible for twin interface nucleations under different loading conditions can be revealed. This paper investigates the asymmetric propagation of acoustic waves in a one-dimensional chain of spherical particles coupled with asymmetric intruders. The chain passes acoustic waves along one direction (forward configuration) whereas partially blocks the acoustic energy propagating along the opposite direction (reverse configuration). A numerical analysis is conducted to investigate this asymmetric propagation by simulating a statically compressed chain of particles interacting via Hertzian contact and subjected to small amplitude periodic displacements at one end. The amount of acoustic energy transmitted through the chain in both configurations is studied and quantified in terms of the acoustic energy transfer ratio, defined as the ratio of the acoustic power at the last particle to the acoustic power at the first particle. The effect of the applied frequency and number of particles in the chain on the transfer ratio is investigated. In addition, a parametric study is performed to evaluate the effects of geometric and material properties on the efficiency of asymmetric acoustic wave propagation in the proposed system. Offshore wind turbines will be developed from shallow water to deep water to meet the rapid growth of wind power generation. Floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) faces complex load challenges, which endanger its safety and service life. Hence, it is urgent to develop a novel damping device to improve the stability of FOWT. In this paper, a novel extended tuned mass damper (ETMD) is proposed. On this basis, a linear quadratic regulator is added to realize the design and simulation of the extended active tuned mass damper (EATMD) control system to reduce the surge response of FOWT. Numerical analysis shows that under the control of ETMD, the surge response of the tower is reduced by 73%, and the frequency modulation width is increased by 55%. Here, under the control of EATMD, the displacement, velocity, and acceleration of the surge response of the tower are decreased by 47.0%, 30.7%, and 24.2%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers (PCSELs) feature high-power coherent lasing over a large area, which are potentially suitable for various applications requiring narrow spectral linewidths. In this paper, we experimentally and theoretically investigate intrinsic spectral linewidths of PCSELs. We first measure the frequency noise spectra of a fabricated PCSEL with a 250-μm lasing diameter and realize single-mode lasing with an intrinsic spectral linewidth below 70 kHz. To investigate the feasibility of narrower spectral linewidths in PCSELs, we next perform the theoretical analysis of intrinsic spectral linewidths of PCSELs by a time-dependent three-dimensional coupled-wave analysis considering carrier–photon interactions as well as thermal effects. We reveal that intrinsic spectral linewidths below 1 kHz can be obtained with a 500-μm-diameter PCSEL by reducing the cavity loss and by compensating the temperature-induced band-edge-frequency distribution. Pumped storage hydropower is perhaps the most reliable solution to the energy crisis, but its development and application are limited by hydraulic instability, such as S-shaped characteristics. In this paper, based on the S-shaped region pressure fluctuation test of a model pump turbine, the connection between the guide vane opening and S-shaped pressure fluctuation is established, and a guide vane opening of 28 mm is selected for numerical analysis to expand the discussion of the S-shaped pressure fluctuation characteristics to large guide vane openings. The frequency components of the vaneless space are extracted by fast Fourier transform analysis, and the rotational stall frequency is identified. Among them, the blade passage frequency and its multiplier are induced by the rotor–stator interaction, and the low-frequency component of pressure fluctuations is induced by the rotational stall and vortex rope. Based on this, the internal flow and flow rate along the S-shaped characteristic curve and their correlation with the rotational stall are analyzed. Aging phenomena have been observed in numerous physical systems. Many statistical quantities depend on the aging time t a for aging anomalous diffusion processes. This paper pays more attention to how an external force field affects the aging Lévy walk. Based on the Langevin picture of the Lévy walk and the generalized Green–Kubo formula, we investigate the quantities that include the ensemble- and time-averaged mean-squared displacements in both weak aging t a ≪ t and strong aging t a ≫ t cases and compare them to the ones in the absence of any force field. Two typical force fields, constant force F and time-dependent periodic force F (t) = f 0 sin ⁡ (ω t) , are considered for comparison. The generalized Einstein relation is also discussed in the case with the constant force. We find that the constant force is the key to causing the aging phenomena and enhancing the diffusion behavior of the aging Lévy walk, while the time-dependent periodic force is not. Understanding the pileup formation process of sequentially deposited droplets is vital in advancing droplet-based printing technologies. While pileups of simple droplets have been extensively studied, knowledge of the hollow pileup formation is inadequate. This paper presents a fully resolved numerical analysis of the pileup formed by successively depositing incoming hollow droplets on a pre-solidified (or base) droplet on a supercool surface. An axisymmetric front-tracking method is used to handle the simulations. The pileup height increases as the incoming droplets coalesce, while the hollow cores may or may not merge. The pileup shape and its hollow configuration depend on parameters such as the Stefan number, Peclet number, Weber number, Fourier number, and the size and number of hollow cores. Varying these parameters does not affect the peak formation at the top of the pile caused by volume expansion during phase change, although the Fourier number has a strong influence on the mean aspect ratio and solidification time of the pileup. Increasing the deposition rate enhances the coalescence of hollow cores and reduces the mean aspect ratio of the pileup. Reducing the Stefan number also promotes hollow core coalescence, which decreases the mean aspect ratio. However, the size of the hollow core and the Peclet and Weber numbers have almost no influence on the outer shape of the hollow pileup. In this paper, we observe the dynamic expansion process of positive leader channels under impulses with different rise times in a 1-m air gap using a Mach-Zehnder interferometry and a high-speed video camera. The thermal parameters describing the leader channel under a lightning and switching impulse are obtained through an analysis of interference fringes. The influences of different voltage waveforms on the dynamic expansion of leader channels are obtained. Firstly, the expansion rates of the channel radius are higher for shorter rise times. The average expansion rates are 72.30 ± 9.54, 28.09 ± 5.05, and 14.38 ± 3.02 m/s for the rise times of 1.2, 40, and 100 μs and the crest value of 425 kV for a 0.5-cm-diameter cone electrode; moreover, the temperatures at the centre of the leader channels are 5000–7000 K, 4000–6000 K, and 3000–4500 K, respectively. Secondly, the high-temperature region is larger for the shorter rise times. A numerical model was used to study the expansion of the leader channels, and the simulation results for the leader channel diameters showed good consistency with the experimental measurements. The continuous energy injection results in an over-pressure process in the leader channels and ultimately in their expansion. For a 1.2/50 μs waveform, the vibrational-translational relaxation (QVT) and the thermal dissociation (QD), which dominate the energy flow, are about one order of magnitude greater than that in a 100/2500 μs waveform. Edge illumination (EI) is a promising X-ray phase contrast imaging (XPCI) technique and is expected to translate XPCI into practical applications with laboratory X-ray sources. However, traditional double-mask EI setup requires two acquisitions for extracting phase and absorption information. Although the latest single-mask EI setup allows phase retrieval with single-shot, it requires a nearly ideal detector point spread function (PSF). In this paper, an alternative EI setup is proposed, which remains double-mask but requires only a single-shot. It can implement single-shot XPCI and relax the detector requirements. Numerical calculations are carried out to compare the characteristics of the double- and single-mask EI setup and the proposed setup. The performance of this setup with different illumination conditions is evaluated theoretically. The results suggest that the proposed setup is less affected by the detector PSF compared to the single-mask EI setup and therefore has higher contrast and contrast-to-noise ratio. Phase retrieval can be implemented by this setup with a single-shot, which helps to simplify the operations and eliminate the potential errors in the double-mask EI setup. A narrow illumination width contributes to the contrast but adversely affects the radiation utilization efficiency, and some appropriate trade-offs should be selected according to the practical applications and experimental conditions. The interpolation finite difference method (IFDM) allows free numerical analysis of elliptic partial differential equations over arbitrary domains. Conventionally, in the finite difference method (FDM), the calculation is performed using the second-order accuracy central difference. For engineering problems, second-order accuracy calculations are often sufficient. On the other hand, much research has been carried out to improve the accuracy of numerical calculations. Although there is much research in the FDM field, the development of numerical calculations by the spectral method is decisive in improving the calculation accuracy. Numerical calculations are usually performed by double precision calculations. If double precision calculations ensure 15 significant digits in floating point computing, such numerical calculations will be the ultimate goal to reach. A numerical calculation that does not seem to have an error even though it originally has an error is defined as a virtual error-zero (VE0) calculation. In this paper, we will examine an overall picture of high-accuracy numerical calculation by the IFDM in the numerical calculation of the 1D Poisson equation. The high-payload transporter is a key part of the multipurpose deployer, which is important for realizing the remote handling of tokamaks. This paper presents an analysis of the key joint between the high-payload transporter and the design of the test platform. The kinematic, structural, and load characteristics of the main joints of a heavy-duty manipulator were analyzed according to the peculiarity of high precision, large length, and heavy load of the high-payload transporter. Joint No. 4 (J4) was determined to be the key joint of the high-payload transporter. The peak torque, bending moment, and shear force of J4 under working conditions and seismic conditions were determined via numerical simulations. The functions and key technical parameters of the test platform for J4 were determined according to the test analysis results and numerical simulation. In this paper, a piezoelectric-driven resonant unit for high-viscosity-liquid injection is introduced. For high-viscosity-liquid delivery in low voltage and frequency, a vibrating block is fixed under the rectangular piezoelectric actuator, to transport the vibration to the chamber, leading the unit into resonant state. The valveless chamber is designed eccentrically to promote the tendency of positive flow and diminish the backflow. Numerical simulation and analyses are carried out to optimize the chamber design, and the experiments with liquid in different viscosity, radius of the vibrating block, and the influence of gravity are conducted. The unit achieves a fast delivery speed with a relatively high liquid viscosity compared to the similar study, as the highest flow rate of 52.4, 88.4, and 103.9 ml/min at 100 V, 60 Hz with the liquid of 54.42, 21.13 cP, and water, respectively. Floating wind turbines (FWTs) are affected by wind, wave, and flow loads, and hence, their its stability is difficult to be guaranteed. The traditional tuned mass damper (TMD) damping effect increases with the increase in its mass ratio, but increasing the TMD mass will cause an instability of the structure. In this paper, to improve the damping performance of TMD, a novel negative stiffness tuned mass damper (TMD-NS) is proposed to reduce the amplitude ratio and increase the tuning bandwidth. The dimensionless optimal parameters of the dynamic damper are obtained by a fixed-point theory. The dynamic model of an FWT with TMD-NS added to the nacelle is established, and the surge response of the nacelle under the random wind action based on cut-in wind speed, rated wind speed, and cutout wind speed is analyzed. Numerical simulation results show that the maximum damping rates of TMD-NS to nacelle displacement, velocity, and acceleration are 55.87%, 48.18%, and 7.19%, respectively. The results show that TMD-NS is better than the traditional TMD in decreasing the amplitude ratio of the main structure and increasing the tuning bandwidth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper reports a method to derive a novel class of 3D generalized thermostatted oscillators from a simple damped harmonic oscillator. Its detailed procedure is obtained through a mathematical derivation. Then, we propose an example system to show the effectiveness of the method. Furthermore, the numerical analysis is performed to investigate its rich conservative dynamics, including chaotic sea, hierarchical invariant tori, and the coexistence of chaotic seas and invariant tori with islands-around-islands hierarchy, even if there are three dissipative terms in the example system. To verify the existence of conservative chaos at the physical level, an analog circuit is presented to observe the existing conservative chaotic flows in National Instruments multisim. We finally provide two systems, which can produce conservative chaotic flows with more complicated topologies, and draw our conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
