Reports on a paper about an immigrant experience in Caribbean youth literature, presented at the 2004 International Book for Young People Congress in Cape Town, South Africa. Presence of a reverse trend of migration to other countries since the late nineteenth century; Change of the pattern changed after World War II in the wake of the liberalization of the immigration laws in Great Britain; Economic gains and social advancement as reasons for the continued migration of Caribbean people.

The article discusses the highlights of the lecture "Refreshments Will Be Served: Our Lives of Reading & Writing," presented by Naomi Shihab Nye at Western Washington University. Topics tackled are the comfort provided by literature, value of books and libraries, reading as a form of hospitality, the possibilities and capacities of language, efficacy of direct speech and the encouragement of voices among children, and the wisdom afforded by poems and stories.
