If $X$ is a quasi Banach space containing no copy of $c_0$ which is isomorphic to a closed subspace of a space with a basis and $C(I, X)$ is linearly homeomorphic to $C(\Delta, X)$, then $X$ is locally convex, i.e., a Banach space. It is shown that Kalton result is sharp by exhibiting non locally convex quasi Banach spaces X with a basis for which $C(I, X)$ and $C(\Delta, X)$ are isomorphic. One of the simplest examples of a robust heteroclinic cycle involves three saddle equilibria: each one is unstable to the next in turn, and connections from one to the next occur within invariant subspaces. Such a situation can be described by a third-order ordinary differential equation (ODE), and typical trajectories approach each equilibrium point in turn, spending progressively longer to cycle around the three points but never stopping. This cycle has been invoked as a model of cyclic competition between populations adopting three strategies, characterised as Rock, Paper and Scissors. When spatial distribution and mobility of the populations is taken into account, waves of Rock can invade regions of Scissors, only to be invaded by Paper in turn. The dynamics is described by a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) that has travelling wave (in one dimension) and spiral (in two dimensions) solutions. In this paper, we explore how the robust heteroclinic cycle in the ODE manifests itself in the PDEs. Taking the wavespeed as a parameter, and moving into a travelling frame, the PDEs reduce to a sixth-order set of ODEs, in which travelling waves are created in a Hopf bifurcation and are destroyed in three different heteroclinic bifurcations, depending on parameters, as the travelling wave approaches the heteroclinic cycle. We explore the three different heteroclinic bifurcations, none of which have been observed in the context of robust heteroclinic cycles previously. We describe a method to construct smooth and compactly supported solutions of 3D incompressible Euler equations and related models. The method is based on localizable Grad–Shafranov equations and is inspired by the recent result (Gavrilov in A steady Euler flow with compact support. Geom Funct Anal 29(1):90–197, [Gav19]).

The identification of the right order of the equation in applied fractional modeling plays an important role. In this paper we consider an inverse problem for determining the order of time fractional derivative in a subdiffusion equation with an arbitrary second order elliptic differential operator. We show that bounded self-contracted curves are rectifiable in metric spaces with weak lower curvature bound in a sense we introduce in this article. This class of spaces is wide and includes, for example, finite-dimensional Alexandrov spaces of curvature bounded below and Berwald spaces of nonnegative flag curvature. (To be more precise, our condition is regarded as a strengthened doubling condition and holds also for a certain class of metric spaces with upper curvature bound.) We also provide the non-embeddability of large snowflakes into (balls in) metric spaces in the same class. Funder: John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation; doi: https://doi.org/10.13039/100005851, In this work we study the global solvability of the primitive equations for the atmosphere coupled to moisture dynamics with phase changes for warm clouds, where water is present in the form of water vapor and in the liquid state as cloud water and rain water. This moisture model contains closures for the phase changes condensation and evaporation, as well as the processes of auto conversion of cloud water into rainwater and the collection of cloud water by the falling rain droplets. It has been used by Klein and Majda in [17] and corresponds to a basic form of the bulk microphysics closure in the spirit of Kessler [16] and Grabowski and Smolarkiewicz [12]. The moisture balances are strongly coupled to the thermodynamic equation via the latent heat associated to the phase changes. In [14] we assumed the velocity field to be given and proved rigorously the global existence and uniqueness of uniformly bounded solutions of the moisture balances coupled to the thermodynamic equation. In this paper we present the solvability of a full moist atmospheric flow model, where the moisture model is coupled to the primitive equations of atmospherical dynamics governing the velocity field. For the derivation of a priori estimates for the velocity field we thereby use the ideas of Cao and Titi [6], who succeeded in proving the global solvability of the primitive equations.

In this paper we provide a mathematical model for imaging an anisotropic, orthotropic medium with Polarization-Sensitive Optical Coherence Tomography (PS-OCT). The imaging problem is formulated as an inverse scattering problem in three dimensions for reconstructing the electrical susceptibility of the medium using Maxwell's equations. The aim of this paper is to show time-decay estimates of solutions to linearized two-phase Navier-Stokes equations with surface tension and gravity. The original two-phase Navier-Stokes equations describe the two-phase incompressible viscous flow with a sharp interface that is close to the hyperplane xN=0 in the N-dimensional Euclidean space, N≥2. It is well-known that the Rayleigh–Taylor instability occurs when the upper fluid is heavier than the lower one, while this paper assumes that the lower fluid is heavier than the upper one and proves time-decay estimates of Lp-Lq type for the linearized equations. Our approach is based on solution formulas for a resolvent problem associated with the linearized equations.

This paper presents a one-sided immersed boundary (IB) method using kernel functions constructed via a moving least squares (MLS) method. The resulting kernels effectively couple structural degrees of freedom to fluid variables on only one side of the fluid-structure interface. This reduces spurious feedback forcing and internal flows that are typically observed in IB models that use isotropic kernel functions to couple the structure to fluid degrees of freedom on both sides of the interface. The method developed here extends the original MLS methodology introduced by Vanella and Balaras (J Comput Phys, 2009). Prior IB/MLS methods have used isotropic kernel functions that coupled fluid variables on both sides of the boundary to the interfacial degrees of freedom. The original IB/MLS approach converts the cubic spline weights typically employed in MLS reconstruction into an IB kernel function that satisfies particular discrete moment conditions. This paper shows that the same approach can be used to construct one-sided kernel functions (kernel functions are referred to as generating functions in the MLS literature). We also examine the performance of the new approach for a family of kernel functions introduced by Peskin. It is demonstrated that the one-sided MLS construction tends to generate non-monotone interpolation kernels with large over- and undershoots. We present two simple weight shifting strategies to construct generating functions that are positive and monotone, which enhances the stability of the resulting IB methodology. Benchmark cases are used to test the order of accuracy and verify the one-sided IB/MLS simulations in both two and three spatial dimensions. In this paper, we construct center stable manifolds around unstable line solitary waves of the Zakharov--Kuznetsov equation on two dimensional cylindrical spaces with $2��L$ period. In the previous paper, center stable manifolds around unstable line solitary waves have been constructed without critical speed $c =4n^2/5L^2$ for positive integer $n>1$. In 1900, at the international congress of mathematicians, Hilbert claimed that the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ is not the solution of any algebraic ordinary differential equations on its region of analyticity. In 2015, Van Gorder considered the question of whether $\zeta(s)$ satisfies a non-algebraic differential equation and showed that it formally satisfies an infinite order linear differential equation. Recently, Prado and Klinger-Logan extended Van Gorder's result to show that the Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ is also formally satisfies a similar differential equation \begin{equation*}\label{HurDE} T\left[\zeta (s,a) - \frac{1}{a^s}\right] = \frac{1}{(s-1)a^{s-1}}. \end{equation*} But unfortunately in the same paper they proved that the operator $T$ applied to Hurwitz zeta function $\zeta(s,a)$ does not converge at any point in the complex plane $\mathbb{C}$. In this paper we investigate the property (HLUR), a generalisation of (LUR) property of a Banach space. A Banach space having the property (HLUR) is called an HLUR space. We characterise (HLUR) property with the help of known geometric properties and study various properties of HLUR spaces. We show that for any finite dimensional Banach space, the property (HLUR) coincides with anti-Daugavet property of the space. We also substantially weaken some of the hypotheses in these papers and we overcome the lack of compactness by using the weighting method.

The main purpose of this paper is the analytical study of self-shrinker solutions of the one-dimensional Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation (LLG), a model describing the dynamics for the spin in ferromagnetic materials. We show that there is a unique smooth family of backward self-similar solutions to the LLG equation, up to symmetries, and we establish their asymptotics. Moreover, we obtain that in the presence of damping, the trajectories of the self-similar profiles converge to great circles on the sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, at an exponential rate. This paper studies the asymptotic behavior of coexistence steady-states of the Shigesada-Kawasaki-Teramoto model as both cross-diffusion coefficients tend to infinity at the same rate. In the case when either one of two cross-diffusion coefficients tends to infinity, Lou and Ni [18] derived a couple of limiting systems, which characterize the asymptotic behavior of coexistence steady-states. Recently, a formal observation by Kan-on [10] implied the existence of a limiting system including the nonstationary problem as both cross-diffusion coefficients tend to infinity at the same rate. This paper gives a rigorous proof of his observation as far as the stationary problem. As a key ingredient of the proof, we establish a uniform L ∞ estimate for all steady-states. Thanks to this a priori estimate, we show that the asymptotic profile of coexistence steady-states can be characterized by a solution of the limiting system.

This paper studies two classes of variational problems introduced in Bressan and Sun (On the optimal shape of tree roots and branches. arXiv:1803.01042), related to the optimal shapes of tree roots and branches. Given a measure $$\mu $$ describing the distribution of leaves, a sunlight functional $${\mathcal {S}}(\mu )$$ computes the total amount of light captured by the leaves. For a measure $$\mu $$ describing the distribution of root hair cells, a harvest functional $${\mathcal {H}}(\mu )$$ computes the total amount of water and nutrients gathered by the roots. In both cases, we seek a measure $$\mu $$ that maximizes these functionals subject to a ramified transportation cost, for transporting nutrients from the roots to the trunk or from the trunk to the leaves. Compared with Bressan and Sun, here we do not impose any a priori bound on the total mass of the optimal measure $$\mu $$, and more careful a priori estimates are thus required. In the unconstrained optimization problem for branches, we prove that an optimal measure exists, with bounded support and bounded total mass. In the unconstrained problem for tree roots, we prove that an optimal measure exists, with bounded support but possibly unbounded total mass. The last section of the paper analyzes how the size of the optimal tree depends on the parameters defining the various functionals.

Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) are effective in solving inverse problems based on differential and integral equations with sparse, noisy, unstructured, and multi-fidelity data. PINNs incorporate all available information into a loss function, thus recasting the original problem into an optimization problem. In this paper, we extend PINNs to parameter and function inference for integral equations such as nonlocal Poisson and nonlocal turbulence models, and we refer to them as nonlocal PINNs (nPINNs). The contribution of the paper is three-fold. First, we propose a unified nonlocal operator, which converges to the classical Laplacian as one of the operator parameters, the nonlocal interaction radius $\delta$ goes to zero, and to the fractional Laplacian as $\delta$ goes to infinity. This universal operator forms a super-set of classical Laplacian and fractional Laplacian operators and, thus, has the potential to fit a broad spectrum of data sets. We provide theoretical convergence rates with respect to $\delta$ and verify them via numerical experiments. Second, we use nPINNs to estimate the two parameters, $\delta$ and $\alpha$. The strong non-convexity of the loss function yielding multiple (good) local minima reveals the occurrence of the operator mimicking phenomenon: different pairs of estimated parameters could produce multiple solutions of comparable accuracy. Third, we propose another nonlocal operator with spatially variable order $\alpha(y)$, which is more suitable for modeling turbulent Couette flow. Our results show that nPINNs can jointly infer this function as well as $\delta$. Also, these parameters exhibit a universal behavior with respect to the Reynolds number, a finding that contributes to our understanding of nonlocal interactions in wall-bounded turbulence., Comment: 31 pages, 20 figures

This paper demonstrates input-to-state stability (ISS) of the SIR model of infectious diseases with respect to the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium. Lyapunov functions are constructed to verify that both equilibria are individually robust with respect to perturbation of newborn/immigration rate which determines the eventual state of populations in epidemics. The construction and analysis are geometric and global in the space of the populations. In addition to the establishment of ISS, this paper shows how explicitly the constructed level sets reflect the flow of trajectories. Essential obstacles and keys for the construction of Lyapunov functions are elucidated. The proposed Lyapunov functions which have strictly negative derivative allow us to not only establish ISS, but also get rid of the use of LaSalle's invariance principle and popular simplifying assumptions.

International audience; We present a new notion of solution for mean field games master equations. This notion allows us to work with solutions which are merely continuous. We prove first results of uniqueness and stability for such solutions. It turns out that this notion is helpful to characterize the value function of mean field games of optimal stopping or impulse control and this is the topic of the second half of this paper. The notion of solution we introduce is only useful in the monotone case. We focus in this paper in the finite state space case.

International audience; Methods for discretizing port-Hamiltonian systems are of interest both for simulation and control purposes. Despite the large literature on mixed finite elements, no rigorous analysis of the connections between mixed elements and port-Hamiltonian systems has been carried out. In this paper we demonstrate how existing methods can be employed to discretize dynamical plate problems in a structure-preserving way. Based on convergence results of existing schemes, new error estimates are conjectured; numerical simulations confirm the expected behaviors.

In the study of equilibrium solutions for partial differential equations there are so many equilibria that one cannot hope to find them all. Therefore one usually concentrates on finding individual branches of equilibrium solutions. On the one hand, a rigorous theoretical understanding of these branches is ideal but not generally tractable. On the other hand, numerical bifurcation searches are useful but not guaranteed to give an accurate structure, in that they could miss a portion of a branch or find a spurious branch where none exists. In a series of recent papers, we have aimed for a third option. Namely, we have developed a method of computer-assisted proofs to prove both existence and isolation of branches of equilibrium solutions. In the current paper, we extend these techniques to the Ohta-Kawasaki model for the dynamics of diblock copolymers in dimensions one, two, and three, by giving a detailed description of the analytical underpinnings of the method. Although the paper concentrates on applying the method to the Ohta-Kawasaki model, the functional analytic approach and techniques can be generalized to other parabolic partial differential equations.

We associate a sequence of variational eigenvalues to any Radon measure on a compact Riemannian manifold. For particular choices of measures, we recover the Laplace, Steklov and other classical eigenvalue problems. In the first part of the paper we study the properties variational eigenvalues and establish a general continuity result, which shows for a sequence of measures converging in the dual of an appropriate Sobolev space, that the associated eigenvalues converge as well. The second part of the paper is devoted to various applications to shape optimization. The main theme is studying sharp isoperimetric inequalities for Steklov eigenvalues without any assumption on the number of connected components of the boundary. In particular, we solve the isoperimetric problem for each Steklov eigenvalue of planar domains: the best upper bound for the $k$-th perimeter-normalised Steklov eigenvalue is $8{\pi}k$, which is the best upper bound for the $k$-th area-normalised eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the sphere. The proof involves realising a weighted Neumann problem as a limit of Steklov problems on perforated domains. For $k = 1$, the number of connected boundary components of a maximizing sequence must tend to infinity, and we provide a quantitative lower bound on the number of connected components. A surprising consequence of our analysis is that any maximizing sequence of planar domains with fixed perimeter must collapse to a point., Comment: 40 pages. The continuous wavelet transform-based SST (WSST) reassigns the scale variable of the continuous wavelet transform of a signal to the frequency variable and sharpens the time-frequency representation. The WSST with a time-varying parameter, called the adaptive WSST, was introduced very recently in the paper "Adaptive synchrosqueezing transform with a time-varying parameter for non-stationary signal separation". The well-separated conditions of non-stationary multicomponent signals with the adaptive WSST and a method to select the time-varying parameter were proposed in that paper. In addition, simulation experiments in that paper show that the adaptive WSST is very promising in estimating the instantaneous frequency of a multicomponent signal, and in accurate component recovery. However the theoretical analysis of the adaptive WSST has not been studied. In this paper, we carry out such analysis and obtain error bounds for component recovery with the adaptive WSST and the 2nd-order adaptive WSST. Automatic differentiation (AD) is an ensemble of techniques that allow to evaluate accurate numerical derivatives of a mathematical function expressed in a computer programming language. In this paper we use AD for stating and solving solid mechanics problems. Given a finite element discretization of the domain, we evaluate the free energy of the solid as the integral of its strain energy density, and we make use of AD for directly obtaining the residual force vector and the tangent stiffness matrix of the problem, as the gradient and the Hessian of the free energy respectively. The result is a remarkable simplification in the statement and the solution of complex problems involving non trivial constraints systems and both geometrical and material non linearities. International audience; We study an equation structured by age and a phenotypic trait describing the growth process of a population subject to aging, competition between individuals, and mutations. This leads to a renewal equation which occurs in many evolutionary biology problems. We aim to describe precisely the asymp-totic behavior of the solution, to infer properties that illustrate the concentration and adaptive dynamics of such a population. This work is a continuation of [38] where the case without mutations is considered. When mutations are taken into account, it is necessary to control the corrector which is the main novelty of the present paper. Our approach consists in defining, by the Hopf transform, a Hamilton-Jacobi equation with an effective Hamiltonian as in homogenization problems. Its solution carries the singular part of the limiting density (typically Dirac masses) and the corrector defines the weights. The main new result of this paper is to prove that the corrector is uniformly bounded, using only the global Lipschitz and semi-convexity estimates for the viscosity solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We also establish the limiting equation satisfied by the corrector. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example where such bounds can be proved in such a context.

We investigate the time-asymptotically nonlinear stability of rarefaction waves to the Cauchy problem of an one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes type system for a viscous, compressible, radiative and reactive gas, where the constitutive relations for the pressure $p$, the specific internal energy $e$, the specific volume $v$, the absolute temperature $\theta$, and the specific entropy $s$ are given by $p=R\theta/v +a\theta^4/3$, $e=C_v\theta+av\theta^4$, and $s=C_v\ln \theta+ 4av\theta^3/3+R\ln v$ with $R>0$, $C_{v}>0$, and $a>0$ being the perfect gas constant, the specific heat and the radiation constant, respectively. For such a specific gas motion, a somewhat surprising fact is that, general speaking, the pressure $\widetilde{p}(v,s)$ is not a convex function of the specific volume $v$ and the specific entropy $s$. Even so, we show in this paper that the rarefaction waves are time-asymptotically stable for large initial perturbation provided that the radiation constant $a$ and the strength of the rarefaction waves are sufficiently small. In the last few decades, numerical simulation for nonlinear oscillators has received a great deal of attention, and many researchers have been concerned with the design and analysis of numerical methods for solving oscillatory problems. In this paper, from the perspective of the continuous finite element method, we propose and analyze new energy-preserving functionally fitted methods, in particular trigonometrically fitted methods of an arbitrarily high order for solving oscillatory nonlinear Hamiltonian systems with a fixed frequency. To implement these new methods in a widespread way, they are transformed into a class of continuous-stage Runge--Kutta methods. This paper is accompanied by numerical experiments on oscillatory Hamiltonian systems such as the FPU problem and nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation. The numerical results demonstrate the remarkable accuracy and efficiency of our new methods compared with the existing high-order energy-preserving methods in the literature., Comment: 24 pages

This work is devoted to the studies of a Hamilton--Jacobi equation with a quadratic and degenerate Hamiltonian, which comes from the dynamics of a multipeakon in the Camassa--Holm equation. It is given by a quadratic form with a singular positive semi-definite matrix. We increase the regularity of the value function considered in our previous paper, which is known to be the viscosity solution. We prove that for a two-peakon Hamiltonian such solutions are actually $1/2$-H\"{o}lder continuous in space and time-Lipschitz continuous. The time-Lipschitz regularity is proven in any dimension $N\geq 1$. Such a regularity is already known in the one-dimensional simplifications, moreover it is the best possible, as was shown in our previous papers.

We denote the local ``little" Lipschitz constant of a function $f: {{\mathbb R}}\to { {\mathbb R}}$ by $ {\mathrm{lip}}f$. In this paper we settle the following question: For which sets $E {\subset} { {\mathbb R}}$ is it possible to find a continuous function $f$ such that $ {\mathrm{lip}}f=\mathbf{1} _E$? In an earlier paper we introduced the concept of strongly one-sided dense sets. Our main result characterizes $ {\mathrm{lip}}1$ sets as countable unions of closed sets which are strongly one-sided dense. We also show that a stronger statement is not true i.e. there are strongly one-sided dense $F _\sigma$ sets which are not $ {\mathrm{lip}}1$.

Quantifying the uncertainty in model parameters and output is a critical component in model-driven decision support systems for groundwater management. This paper presents a novel algorithmic approach which fuses Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) and Machine Learning methods to accelerate uncertainty quantification for groundwater flow models. We formulate the governing mathematical model as a Bayesian inverse problem, considering model parameters as a random process with an underlying probability distribution. MCMC allows us to sample from this distribution, but it comes with some limitations: it can be prohibitively expensive when dealing with costly likelihood functions, subsequent samples are often highly correlated, and the standard Metropolis-Hastings algorithm suffers from the curse of dimensionality. This paper designs a Metropolis-Hastings proposal which exploits a deep neural network (DNN) approximation of a groundwater flow model, to significantly accelerate MCMC sampling. We modify a delayed acceptance (DA) model hierarchy, whereby proposals are generated by running short subchains using an inexpensive DNN approximation, resulting in a decorrelation of subsequent fine model proposals. Using a simple adaptive error model, we estimate and correct the bias of the DNN approximation with respect to the posterior distribution on-the-fly. The approach is tested on two synthetic examples; a isotropic two-dimensional problem, and an anisotropic three-dimensional problem. The results show that the cost of uncertainty quantification can be reduced by up to 50% compared to single-level MCMC, depending on the precomputation cost and accuracy of the employed DNN., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures

This paper introduces the scaled boundary cubature (SBC) scheme for accurate and efficient integration of functions over polygons and two-dimensional regions bounded by parametric curves. Over two-dimensional domains, the SBC method reduces integration over a region bounded by $m$ curves to integration over $m$ regions (referred to as curved triangular regions), where each region is bounded by two line segments and a curve. With proper (counterclockwise) orientation of the boundary curves, the scheme is applicable to convex and nonconvex domains. Additionally, for star-convex domains, a tensor-product cubature rule with positive weights and integration points in the interior of the domain is obtained. If the integrand is homogeneous, we show that this new method reduces to the homogeneous numerical integration scheme; however, the SBC scheme is more versatile since it is equally applicable to both homogeneous and non-homogeneous functions. This paper also introduces several methods for smoothing integrands with point singularities and near-singularities. When these methods are used, highly efficient integration of weakly singular functions is realized. The SBC method is applied to a number of benchmark problems, which reveal its broad applicability and superior performance (in terms of time to generate a rule and accuracy per cubature point) when compared to existing methods for integration., Comment: 41 pages, 24 figures

In this paper, we consider a system of initial boundary value problems for parabolic equations, as a generalized version of the "$ \phi $-$ \eta $-$ \theta $ model" of grain boundary motion, proposed by Kobayashi [16]. The system is a coupled system of: an Allen--Cahn type equation as in (1.1) with a given temperature source; and a phase-field model of grain boundary motion, known as "Kobayashi--Warren--Carter type model". The focus of the study is on a special kind of solution, called energy-dissipative solution, which is to reproduce the energy-dissipation of the governing energy in time. This paper is devoted to the global existence of weak solutions to the following degenerate kinetic model of chemotaxis (0.1) u t = Δ ( γ ( v ) u ) τ v t = Δ v − v + u in a smooth bounded domain with no-flux boundary conditions under the assumption 0 ≤ τ ( sup ( 0 , ∞ ) γ ) − 1 . The problem features a positive signal-dependent motility function γ ( ⋅ ) which may vanish as v becomes unbounded. In this paper, we first modify the comparison approach developed recently in Fujie and Jiang (2020); Fujie and Jiang (2021) to derive the upper bounds of v under the slightly weakened above assumptions on γ ( ⋅ ) . Then by introducing a suitable approximation scheme which is compatible with the comparison method, we establish the global existence of weak solutions in any spatial dimension via compactness argument. Our weak solution has higher regularity than those obtained in previous literature (Burger et al., 2020; Desvillettes et al., 2019; Tao and Winkler, 2017).

In this paper, we resolve the ever-present confusion over the QUICK scheme: it is a second-order scheme or a third-order scheme. The QUICK scheme, as proposed in the original reference [B. P. Leonard, Comput. Methods. Appl. Mech. Eng., 19, (1979), 59-98], is a third-order (not second-order) finite-volume scheme for the integral form of a general nonlinear conservation law with point-valued solutions stored at cell centers as numerical solutions. Third-order accuracy is proved by a careful and detailed truncation error analysis and demonstrated by a series of thorough numerical tests. The QUICK scheme requires a careful spatial discretization of a time derivative to preserve third-order accuracy for unsteady problems. Two techniques are discussed, including the QUICKEST scheme of Leonard. Discussions are given on how the QUICK scheme is mistakenly found to be second-order accurate. This paper is intended to serve as a reference to clarify any confusion about third-order accuracy of the QUICK scheme and also as the basis for clarifying third-order unstructured-grid schemes as we will discuss in a subsequent paper.

This paper provides a unified mathematical analysis of a family of non-local diffuse interface models for tumor growth describing evolutions driven by long-range interactions. These integro-partial differential equations model cell-to-cell adhesion by a non-local term and may be seen as non-local variants of the corresponding local model proposed by H. Garcke et al. (2016). The model in consideration couples a non-local Cahn-Hilliard equation for the tumor phase variable with a reaction-diffusion equation for the nutrient concentration, and takes into account also significant mechanisms such as chemotaxis and active transport. The system depends on two relaxation parameters: a viscosity coefficient and parabolic-regularization coefficient on the chemical potential. The first part of the paper is devoted to the analysis of the system with both regularizations. Here, a rich spectrum of results is presented. Weak well-posedness is first addressed, also including singular potentials. Then, under suitable conditions, existence of strong solutions enjoying the separation property is proved. This allows also to obtain a refined stability estimate with respect to the data, including both chemotaxis and active transport. The second part of the paper is devoted to the study of the asymptotic behavior of the system as the relaxation parameters vanish. The asymptotics are analyzed when the parameters approach zero both separately and jointly, and exact error estimates are obtained. The singular set of a viscosity solution to a Hamilton-Jacobi equation is known to propagate, from any noncritical singular point, along singular characteristics which are curves satisfying certain differential inclusions. In the literature, different notions of singular characteristics were introduced. However, a general uniqueness criterion for singular characteristics, not restricted to mechanical systems or problems in one space dimension, is missing at the moment. In this paper, we prove that, for a Tonelli Hamiltonian on $\mathbb{R}^2$, two different notions of singular characteristics coincide up to a bi-Lipschitz reparameterization. As a significant consequence, we obtain a uniqueness result for the class of singular characteristics that was introduced by Khanin and Sobolevski in the paper [On dynamics of Lagrangian trajectories for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. This paper is concerned with a family of Reaction-Diffusion systems that we introduced in [ 15 ], and that generalizes the SIR type models from epidemiology. Such systems are now also used to describe collective behaviors. In this paper, we propose a modeling approach for these apparently diverse phenomena through the example of the dynamics of social unrest. The model involves two quantities: the level of social unrest, or more generally activity, $ u $, and a field of social tension $ v $, which play asymmetric roles. We think of $ u $ as the actually observed or explicit quantity while $ v $ is an ambient, sometimes implicit, field of susceptibility that modulates the dynamics of $ u $. In this article, we explore this class of model and prove several theoretical results based on the framework developed in [ 15 ], of which the present work is a companion paper. We particularly emphasize here two subclasses of systems: tension inhibiting and tension enhancing . These are characterized by respectively a negative or a positive feedback of the unrest on social tension. We establish several properties for these classes and also study some extensions. In particular, we describe the behavior of the system following an initial surge of activity. We show that the model can give rise to many diverse qualitative dynamics. We also provide a variety of numerical simulations to illustrate our results and to reveal further properties and open questions.

In the first part of the paper, we propose and rigorously analyze a mixed finite element method for the approximation of the periodic strong solution to the fully nonlinear second-order Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equation with coefficients satisfying the Cordes condition. These problems arise as the corrector problems in the homogenization of Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman equations. The second part of the paper focuses on the numerical homogenization of such equations, more precisely on the numerical approximation of the effective Hamiltonian. This paper is concerned with the inverse problem of reconstructing the location and shape of buried obstacles in the lower half-space of an unbounded two-layered medium in two dimensions from phaseless far-field data. Similarly to the homogenous background medium case, for this problem it is also true that the modulus of the far-field pattern is invariant under translations of the scattering obstacle if only one plane wave is used as the incident field, and thus it is impossible to determine the location of the obstacle from such phaseless far-field data. Based on the idea of using superpositions of two plane waves with different directions as the incident fields, a direct imaging algorithm is developed in this paper to locate the position of small anomalies with the intensity of the far-field pattern measured in the upper half-space. This is a nontrivial extension of our previous work (2018 Inverse Problems 34 104005) from the homogenous background medium case to the two-layered background medium case. Both the limited aperture measurement data and the presence of the two-layered background medium lead to difficulties in the theoretical analysis of the proposed imaging algorithm. To overcome the difficulties we employ the theory of oscillatory integrals. Further, with the aid of the imaging algorithm, a recursive Newton-type iteration algorithm in frequencies is proposed to reconstruct both the location and shape of extended obstacles. Finally, numerical experiments are presented to illustrate the feasibility of our algorithms.

We propose a robust numerical method to find the coefficient of the creation or depletion term of parabolic equations from the measurement of the lateral Cauchy information of their solutions. Most papers in the field study this nonlinear and severely ill-posed problem using optimal control. The main drawback of this widely used approach is the need of some advanced knowledge of the true solution. In this paper, we propose a new method that opens a door to solve nonlinear inverse problems for parabolic equations without any initial guess of the true coefficient. This claim is confirmed numerically. The key point of the method is to derive a system of nonlinear elliptic equations for the Fourier coefficients of the solution to the governing equation with respect to a special basis of L 2 . We then solve this system by a predictor–corrector process, in which our computation to obtain the first and second predictors is effective. The desired solution to the inverse problem under consideration follows.

Shape memory materials have gained considerable attention thanks to their ability to change physical properties when subjected to external stimuli such as temperature, pH, humidity, electromagnetic fields, etc. These materials are increasingly used for a large number of biomedical applications. For applications inside the human body, contactless control can be achieved by the addition of electric and/or magnetic particles that can react to electromagnetic fields, thus leading to a composite biomaterial. The difficulty of developing accurate numerical models for smart materials results from their multiscale nature and from the multiphysics coupling of involved phenomena. This coupling involves electromagnetic, thermal and mechanical problems. This paper contributes to the multiphysics modelling of a shape memory polymer material used as a medical stent. The stent is excited by electromagnetic fields produced by a coil which can be wrapped around a failing organ. In this paper we develop large deformation formulations for the coupled electro-thermo-mechanical problem using the electric potential to solve the electric problem. The formulations are then discretized and solved using the finite element method. This paper studies an unsupervised deep learning-based numerical approach for solving partial differential equations (PDEs). The approach makes use of the deep neural network to approximate solutions of PDEs through the compositional construction and employs least-squares functionals as loss functions to determine parameters of the deep neural network. There are various least-squares functionals for a partial differential equation. This paper focuses on the so-called first-order system least-squares (FOSLS) functional studied in [3], which is based on a first-order system of scalar second-order elliptic PDEs. This paper considers hyperbolic wave equations with non-local in time conditions involving integrals with respect to time. It is shown that regularity of the solution can be achieved for complexified problem with integral conditions involving harmonic complex exponential weights. The paper establishes existence, uniqueness, and a regularity of the solutions.

In this paper we propose a new class of iterative regularization methods for solving ill-posed linear operator equations. The prototype of these iterative regularization methods is in the form of second order evolution equation with a linear vanishing damping term, which can be viewed not only as an extension of the asymptotical regularization, but also as a continuous analog of the Nesterov's acceleration scheme. New iterative regularization methods are derived from this continuous model in combination with damped symplectic numerical schemes. The regularization property as well as convergence rates and acceleration effects under the Holder-type source conditions of both continuous and discretized methods are proven. The second part of this paper is concerned with the application of the newly developed accelerated iterative regularization methods to the diffusion-based bioluminescence tomography, which is modeled as an inverse source problem in elliptic partial differential equations with both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary data. A relaxed mathematical formulation is proposed so that the discrepancy principle can be applied to the iterative scheme without the usage of Sobolev embedding constants. Several numerical examples, as well as a comparison with the state-of-the-art methods, are given to show the accuracy and the acceleration effect of the new methods.
