This article reports that the Commission on Software Issues in the 1980s was organized in November 1980 by representatives from several computer-oriented associations to attempt to address several of the vital questions facing the software industry. Commission members envision their work on these issues in two phases: first, to assimilate the material themselves, and second, to consider how best to share their perceptions about it with their member societies and the public. The presentations are being held as a result of the Commission's October 1981 National Conference held in Washington, D.C. The report of the Task Force on Education and Training presented at that conference caused much discussion and the results of an audience survey revealed that there is a perceived need for more awareness in this area. Not only is there an apparent need to distinguish among the purposes of the several different curriculum reports, but there is a realization that those outside the curriculum development process need to have an opportunity to understand the specialized educational terminology and vocabulary used within these groups.
