Paper with simultaneous fire-resistance and hydrophobicity have greatly potential applications in the fields of packing, storage and delivering information, which attracts increasing attention recently. Different from the traditional cellulose-based paper which is extremely easily damaged by water and fire, a new type of highly flexible, fire-resistant and hydrophobic paper based on Si 3 N 4 nanowires and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is reported. Specially, the Si 3 N 4 @PDMS core-shell nanowires with 3D interlocking structure are designed, in which the Si 3 N 4 nanowires act as the inorganic fire-resistant frameworks and the PDMS shell with low surface energy provides the hydrophobic surface. The Si 3 N 4 @PDMS core-shell nanowires are intertwined and interlaced to form a highly flexible Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper. The tensile strength of Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper is 6.19 MPa, indicating the good mechanical property. The obtained Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper has the characteristics of writability, fire-resistance and hydrophobicity. The high thermal stability of Si 3 N 4 nanowires makes Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper exhibit excellent fire resistance. No obvious change is observed for the commercial paper with Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper as the fire-shielding layer after heating for 30 min. In addition, the contact angles of water droplets are all greater than 110° over the surfaces of Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper after mechanical damages, chemical corrosions and thermal treatments. Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper can be used in oil/water separation and oil collection. More importantly, Si 3 N 4 @PDMS paper can be used for writing without being damaged by fire or water. The development of self-powered UV photodiode on green substrate is still a challenge. In this study, highly conductive Al doped ZnO (AZO) film was sputter-deposited on paper substrate at room temperature; subsequently, paper-based Schottky photodiodes were successfully fabricated by following Au-ZnO-Al and Au-ZnO-AZO-Al structure designs, respectively. These UV light-based devices operate successfully without external power. Au-ZnO-AZO-Al photodiode shows improved response and faster speed compared to Au-ZnO-Al photodiode. The one-dimensional Poisson simulation results demonstrate that the improvement is attributed to the strong electric field in the ZnO-AZO n-n+ high-low junction, thus, enhancing the collection rate and drifting speed of the photogenerated carriers. In addition, AZO can form favorable ohmic contact with the Al electrodes, further improving the device performance. The photo-response of the paper-based photodiode device shows high reproducibility and stability. Based on these outstanding results, we conclude that these paper-based electronic devices have great potential to replace conventional petroleum-based flexible electronic devices, thus, contributing to the green/sustainable development. However, the limited output performance and stability in harsh environments and oxidation and corrosion of the metal electrodes have limited the practical application of cellulose paper based triboelectric nanogenerators (CPTENGs). Here, we have integrated cellulose paper-based triboelectric material and electrode in one sheet by using multi-layer forming technology in paper industry; the upper triboelectric layer shows excellent triboelectric positive performance, hydrophobicity and acid and alkali resistance, while the bottom electrode exhibits promise conductivity. The all CPTENGs can yield a maximum open-circuit voltage (V OC) of 227.1 V, a short-circuit current (I SC) of 6.9 μA. Furthermore, the V OC values of the all CPTENGs increase from 0.02 V to 225.1 V at the load resistance of 100 Ω∼10 GΩ; and a power density of 520 mW·m−2 is also obtained at a load resistance of 30 MΩ. Moreover, the V OC of CPTENGs not only retains up to 78 % of its initial value at a high relative humidity of 90 %, but also almost maintains unchanged in a wide range of the pH environment (pH = 1∼13). More importantly, the CPTENGs can be readily matched with paper-based zinc supercapacitor (P-ZISC) to act as an all paper based self-charging power system (PSCPS). The PSCPS is capable of driving various miniaturized electronics, such as electronic watch, temperature/humidity indicator, demonstrating its potential application in a sustainable power source for portable and green electronics. Predictive models for the transport of volatile organic compounds in paper need to consider the complex interplay of diffusion, adsorption, desorption, or chemical reactions. The relative importance of each of these processes is determined by the polarity of the volatile. Hence, it is challenging to pick a valid theoretical model that correctly predicts transport regardless of the polarity. Here, physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) assess which of five different models correctly describe transport of DMSO as polar and n-tetradecane as apolar model compound: (i) a pseudo first-order adsorption model for an irreversible sorption process, (ii) a first-order kinetics model allowing reversible sorption, (iii) a second-order model with a reversible process, and an effective diffusion model accounting for a constant (iv) and for a variable effective diffusivity (v). Each tested model is given as set of partial differential equations (PDE). Considering the model under testing and experimentally obtained spatially and temporally resolved concentration profiles through stacks of paper sheets, PINNs predict concentration of the volatiles and associated material constants such as sorption constants and effective diffusion coefficients by solving the inverse problem. Our PINNs revealed two models, pseudo first-order sorption and second-order reversible sorption, that correctly predict concentration profiles and polarity-driven differences in sorption times. [Display omitted] • Honeycomb panels with discrete arranged block reinforcements were numerically designed. • The elastic moduli of the new honeycomb panels are higher than those of heavier panels with slatted. • Tables with new cellular panels are characterized by a stiffness of 85 % of the stiffness of heavier tables with slats. Furniture manufacturers indicate they know the benefits of lightweight honeycomb panels but still expect their higher mechanical properties. This work presents a numerical and experimental approach to designing new tables manufactured of paper honeycomb panels with discreetly arranged reinforcing blocks in the core. The main goal was to determine whether the discrete arrangement of the blocks affects the strength and amount of energy absorbed by the newly designed tables and stiffness of honeycomb panels. Optimization reduced the weight of the panels by up to 30 %. At the same time, their linear elastic modulus was increased from 1579 MPa to 1771 MPa. After ten load cycles, tables with discrete reinforcements have a stiffness up 86.85–87.20 % of the stiffness of the reference table. After destructive tests up 89.96–91.16 %. The dimensional stability of paper during printing is crucial for ensuring production quality and runnability. However, inkjet printing faces inherent challenges due to the hygroscopic nature of paper and the use of water-based inks. Despite freshly printed sheets are flat, a considerable development of paper curl is often observed during storage. In this study, we establish the link between the migration of ink co-solvents and the long-term curl development of printed paper. A4 paper sheets were sprayed with a water-glycerol model ink and changes in the sheet's curvature were monitored using a 2D-laser sensor. We also investigated glycerol migration by splitting the sheets into layers and determining the glycerol distribution using high-performance liquid chromatography. Our results demonstrate the development of curl during storage as well as glycerol migration in thickness direction of the sheet, both on a comparable timescale. We thus propose that long term curl in inkjet printing can be caused by z-directional migration of the co-solvent (glycerol) over time. This study enhances understanding of the physical mechanisms that drive the long-term curl phenomenon in inkjet-printed sheets. The high demand for flexible electroconductive elements, such as organic coatings, is associated with the development of IoT devices, wearable health monitoring devices, and similar devices. To meet cost and environmental standards, the ideal coating should use the richness of nature, be biodegradable, and be water soluble to avoid the use of harmful organic solvents. All of these criteria are met by the composite coating consisting of sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Furthermore, the SLS/CNT coating on paper substrates is highly electroconductive, hydrophobic, and resistant to annealing, high humidity, bending, and scratching. The electrical conductivity of the SLS/CNT coating varies depending on the substrate used, but it is highly conductive and resistant on all substrates tested. Most importantly, due to the use of abundant and mass produced and cheap materials, the price of a coating containing 77 wt% SLS and 23 wt% CNT, with a sheet resistance of 113 Ω/sq is estimated to be around 2.05 EUR/m2. This coating can be especially beneficial for large-scale applications, such as heating films. A computationally efficient method to study the in-plane and out-of-plane dimensional instability of thin paper sheets under the influence of moisture changes is presented. The method explicitly resolves the bonded and the free segments of fibers in the sheet, capturing the effect of anisotropic hygroexpansion at the fiber level. The method is verified against a volumetric model. The importance of longitudinal fiber hygroexpansion is demonstrated in spite of the absolute value of longitudinal hygroexpansion being an order of magnitude lower than the transverse hygroexpansion component. Finally, the method is used to demonstrate the formation of macroscopic sheet curl due to a moisture gradient in structurally uniform sheets in the absence of viscoelastic or plastic constitutive behavior and through-thickness residual stress profiles. The synthesis of few-layer graphene from graphite typically uses N, N methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) or dimethylformamide (DMF) due to the strong affinity of both solvents for graphite. However, NMP and DMF are known as carcinogens and a long-time exposure to these substances may subject users to potential risk of major health issue later. Therefore, a replacement with dispersing solvent that is not only harmless but also able to exfoliate graphite at an excellent concentration yield must be outlined for a sustainable mass-production of graphene. In this work, we have successfully exfoliated graphite to few-layer graphene with a recorded yield concentration of up to 0.75°mg/ml (2.5°h) just by using extracted red spinach/water mixture as an exfoliating medium. The prepared graphene was found to possess less structural defect (I D /I G : 0.5) and high C/O ratio (6.8) and can be used further as an electrical conductive ink for smart "Sticky Note" sensor. The fabricated device was able to detect strain and temperature with gauge factor and temperature coefficient resistance of 23.5 and −32.14 × 10-4°Ω/°;C, respectively. We believe that this study would be useful for the preparation of environmental-friendly graphene that is not only strain and thermally sensitive but also producible at low -cost. Unprinting of paper can reduce multiple life-cycle stages in the recycling of paper to yield significant environmental impact. Laser-unprinting has been demonstrated for uncoated paper but causes significant damage to coated paper. This work explores a scalable optical (non-laser) process for unprinting coated paper. Printed coated paper is exposed to pulsed broad-spectrum Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) from a xenon lamp and the toner is then removed by dabbing gently with an ethanol wipe. While black toner is easily unprinted, unprinting of colored prints (red, blue, green) is best realized by incorporating an initial overprint of black toner. An unprinting throughput on the order of mm2/s is achieved. Three distinct regimes of unprinting are identified based on the extent of toner removal and damage of the paper. The optical properties of the unprinted paper, characterized via UV–Visible spectrophotometry, are correlated to these regimes to understand the potential for in-situ optical process monitoring. Scanning Electron Micrography and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy are performed to understand the underlying mechanisms that govern the occurrence of the different unprinting regimes. Thermal and catalytic pyrolysis of aluminum plastic laminate over zeolite catalysts were performed to produce high quality oil. Thermogravimetric analysis of aluminum plastic laminate indicated that the decomposition kinetics of aluminum plastic laminate were changed by interactions between the polymer components during the thermogravimetric analysis of aluminum plastic laminate. The effects of aluminum foil on the aluminum plastic laminate decomposition kinetics were negligible. The catalytic pyrolysis of aluminum plastic laminate over the acid catalysts using tandem-micro reactor-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry produced large amounts of aromatics due to the properties of the main polymers, polyethylene and poly (ethylene terephthalate), in aluminum plastic laminate. Among three catalysts, HZSM-5 (SiO 2 /Al 2 O 3 , 23), HY(30), and Al-MCM-41 (20), HZSM-5 (23) had the highest efficiency on aromatics production followed by HY(30) and Al-MCM-41 (20). Co-feeding aluminum plastic laminate to the catalytic pyrolysis of paper over HZSM-5 (23) and HY(30) was also effective on aromatics production, highlighting the potential use of aluminum plastic laminate to enhance the synergistic aromatics formation during the catalytic pyrolysis of biomass. • Interaction between polymers changed kinetic behavior of aluminum plastic laminate. • Catalytic pyrolysis of aluminum plastic laminate produced aromatics efficiently. • HZSM-5 was the most effective catalyst on aromatics formation. • Co-feeding aluminum plastic laminate and paper produced additional aromatics. Many materials of everyday use are fibrous and their strength is important in most applications. In this work we study the dependence of the strength of random fiber networks on structural parameters such as the network density, cross-link density, fiber tortuosity, and the strength of the inter-fiber cross-links. Athermal networks of cellular and fibrous type are considered. We conclude that the network strength scales linearly with the cross-link number density and with the cross-link strength for a broad range of network parameters, and for both types of networks considered. Network strength is independent of fiber material properties and of fiber tortuosity. In Paper and Pulp (P&P) industry resource management scenarios, such as processing cell(s) efficiency reduction, equipment break-down or failures, alternative energy source (biomass and solar energy) utilization/ synchronization with regular energy sources and management decided change in production rate or product quality often occur in industrial processes causing material flow disruption, energy and production losses. In such scenarios, immediate and appropriate actions are required to be taken to minimize energy and production losses. Emerging resource management options tackle these issues through four different ways i.e., by mixing of readymade pulp at various processing stages, by varying the percentage of input raw material, by adopting a parallel utilization of alternative energy sources and by switching on/off some processing units or parallel working segments. These ways are implementable with immediate effect, accurately monitorable and their degree of application can be regulated within a wide range, thus denoted as adaptive solutions. This research work proposes a discrete-event simulation based real-time resource management technique for paper and pulp industry, wherein some resource management challenges are addressed and solved strategically with adaptive solutions. The presented examples validate that using the developed approach, the effective adaptive strategy can be timely planned to resolve occasionally or permanently happening resource management challenges ensuring an un-interrupted material flow throughout the plant along with the minimization of productivity and energy losses. This work focuses on a systematic method to produce Ag, Cu, and Ag/Cu metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) in situ assisted with ultrasound on cellulose paper. By tuning the concentration of AgNO 3 and CuSO 4 salt precursors and ultrasound time, combined with a fixed concentration of ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent, it was possible to control the size, morphology, and polydispersity of the resulting MNPs on cellulose papers. Notably, high yield and low polydispersity of MNPs and bimetallic nanoparticles are achieved by increasing the sonication time on paper samples pre-treated with salt precursors before reduction with AA. Moreover, mechanical analysis on paper samples presenting well-dispersed and distributed MNPs showed slightly decreasing values of Young's modulus compared to neat papers. The strain at break is substantially improved in papers containing solely Ag or Cu MNPs. The latter suggests that the elastic/plastic transition and deformation of papers are tuned by cellulose and MNPs interfacial interaction, as indicated by mechanical analysis. The proposed method provides insights into each factor affecting the sonochemistry in situ synthesis of MNPs on cellulose papers. Point-of-care testing (POCT) technology is urgently required owing to the prevalence of the Internet of Things and portable electronics. In light of the attractive properties of low background and high sensitivity caused by the complete separation of excitation source and detection signal, the paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors, featured with fast in analysis, disposable and environmental-friendly have become one of the most promising strategies in POCT. Therefore, in this review, the latest advances and principal issues in the design and fabrication of portable paper-based PEC sensors for POCT are systematically discussed. Primarily, the flexible electronic devices that can be constructed by paper and the reasons why they can be used in PEC sensors are expounded. Afterwards, the photosensitive materials involved in paper-based PEC sensor and the signal amplification strategies are emphatically introduced. Subsequently, the application of paper-based PEC sensors in medical diagnosis, environmental monitoring and food safety are further discussed. Finally, the main opportunities and challenges of paper-based PEC sensing platforms for POCT are briefly summarized. In the past few years, point-of-care testing (POCT) technology has crossed the boundaries of laboratory determination and entered the stage of practical applications. Herein, the latest advances and principal issues in the design and fabrication of paper-based bipolar electrode electrochemiluminescence (BPE-ECL) sensors, which are widely used in the POCT field, are highlighted. After introducing the attractive physical and chemical properties of cellulose paper, various approaches aimed at enhancing the functions of the paper, and their underlying principles are described. The materials typically employed for fabricating paper-based BPE are also discussed in detail. Subsequently, the universal method of enhancing BPE-ECL signal and improving detection accuracy is put forward, and the ECL detector widely used is introduced. Furthermore, the application of paper-based BPE-ECL sensors in biomedical, food, environmental and other fields are displayed. Finally, future opportunities and the remaining challenges are analyzed. Abstract In recent years, paper has been used as an alternative to traditional substrate materials in the development of strain sensors and accelerometers due to its flexibility, disposability due to environment low footprint and low cost. A lack of knowledge about the sources of nonlinearity in the mechanical behavior of paper makes difficult to consistently predict its performance. The characterization procedures available in the literature are based on both static and dynamic loading as a first attempt to describe the elastic behavior of paper in sensing applications. However, these procedures do not reveal the necessary information to describe the elastic behavior of paper under dynamic excitation. In this work, the nonlinear dynamic response of a harmonically excited paper-based cantilever beam is studied. A lumped model with a quadratic nonlinearity is adopted to describe the nonlinear response of paper-based cantilever beams. The obtained results show that the nonlinear resonance frequency response is dependent on the intrinsic properties of paper when discarding hygrothermal variations of paper as the main source of nonlinear behavior. It was found that the estimation of two nonlinear elastic parameters, α p (hysteresis nonlinear parameter) and E 0 (linear elastic modulus) could yield an improved description of the elastic behavior of paper subjected to vibrations. It was concluded that the existing paper characterization standards should be adapted to better predict the dynamic behavior of paper-based mechanical systems. Different types of paper materials were analyzed to study the influence of the intrinsic characteristics of paper on the nonlinear parameters. Abstract Developing low-cost, portable and simple analysis tools is of vital importance for food safety point-of-care testing. Therefore, herein, a new low-cost, simple to fabricate, disposable, electrochemical mast cell-based paper sensor is proposed and developed to sensitively determine the major milk allergen casein. Then, a graphene (GN)/carbon nanofiber (CN)/ Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) composite material with high conductivity and good biocompatibility was modified on the cell-based paper sensor to improve the electrical conductivity and provide a sensing recognition interface for the immobilization of rat basophilic leukemia (RBL-2H3) mast cells. The cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry measurement of the mast cells in the paper sensor revealed an irreversible anodic peak, whose peak current is proportional to the number of cells in the range from 1 × 102 to 1 × 108 cells/mL. For the milk allergen detection tests, mast cells exposed to the casein caused a significant reduction in the current signal, displaying an inverse dose-dependent relationship. The developed cell sensor exhibited a range of linearity between 1 × 10−7 and 1 × 10−6 g/mL of casein with a detection limit of 3.2 × 10−8 g/mL and a great reproducibility and selectivity. The electrochemical responses obtained using the cell-based paper sensor were well consistent with the conventional detection assay, with good stability and reproducibility. Therefore, a simple and novel electrochemical method for food allergens detection was developed, demonstrating its potential application in the food safety determination and evaluation. Abstract A number of problems associated with dimensional stability of paper products have to do with hygroexpansion in response to changes in humidity or moisture content. The main underlying mechanism of hygroexpansion in paper is the effect of the change of fiber cross-sections transferred through fiber bonds. In fact, the transverse expansion of fibers can be an order of magnitude greater than the longitudinal expansion. Addressing such problems using modeling on the microscale is associated with large computational costs since both the bonds and the fibers need to be resolved. We present a method for modeling the hygro or thermal expansion of interconnected fiber networks modeled with beam elements and connected through beam-to-beam contact. Being a line structure, beams can only support pointwise contact, which poses a challenge for modeling the force transfer induced by the deformation of the cross-sections at the contact point. The idea of implementing the stress transfer is to use a concurrent multiscale approach in which the bond level is resolved in detail using the configuration of the fibers and the computed strains are passed over to the beam elements. We verify and prove the applicability of this approach by comparing it with continuum models. We demonstrate the advantage of using this approach in terms of its tremendous saving in time. The use of beam models for modeling the hygro- or thermal expansion of fiber networks enables considering relevant sizes in the problems involving dimensional stability, in particular those associated with embedded inhomogeneities. We will show the applicability of the model by providing insights into published experimental observations on the hygroexpansion properties of paper products. Finally, we will demonstrate that the use of a 2D model to simulate the inter-fiber bonds in a network, not only leads to underestimation of out-of-plane deformations, but also to overestimation of the contribution of the transverse deformation of fibers to the in-plane dimensional change of the network. Abstract In this study, an innovative thermal interface material (TIM) paper based on a composite of cellulose and graphene is investigated experimentally. Six types of commercially-available papers: a wool paper; an aqua satin; a merit paper; a new craft board; and two oriental traditional papers (Bulgyeong and Daerye) are used to fabricate the paper-graphene composites via bar coating and a slot die coating. The fabricated TIM papers are lightweight, flexible and robust against tensile strength. The in-plane and through-plane thermal conductivities of the TIM papers are measured using a laser-flash-method (LFM). The measured in-plane thermal conductivities are of the order of 5 W/m-K, whereas the through-plane thermal conductivities are of the order of 0.1 W/m-K. These results suggest that the addition of graphene significantly enhance the in-plane thermal conductivity of papers, while the through-plane thermal conductivities are not significantly improved. The mechanical properties of the TIM papers are also tested. Abstract Graphene-based materials represent advanced platforms for tissue engineering and implantable medical devices. From a clinical standpoint, it is essential that these materials are produced using non-toxic and non-hazardous methods, and have predictable properties and reliable performance under variable physiological conditions; especially when used with a cellular component. Here we describe such a biomaterial, namely smart graphene-cellulose (G-C) paper, and its suitability for traditional planar two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) human cell support, verified by adipose-derived stem cell (ADSC) culture and osteogenic differentiation. G-C paper is prepared using commercially available cellulose tissue paper as a substrate that is coated by immersion-deposition with graphene oxide (GO) followed by reduction to reduced graphene oxide (RGO) without the use of toxic organic solvents. The fabrication process is amenable to large scale production and the resultant papers have low electrical resistivity (up to ∼300 Ω/sq). Importantly, G-C papers can be configured to 3D constructs by lamination with alginate and further modified by folding and rolling for 3D "origami-inspired" cell-laden structures. Abstract The research progress in the centrifugal microfluidic platform provides great opportunities for simple and effective analytical measurements in a variety of areas including biomedical engineering. In this study, we propose an optical reader that can measure the transmittance in a very sensitive and rapid manner on a hybrid paper-polymer centrifugal disc platform. This device enables real-time monitoring of multiple samples by measuring the absorbance of the light transmitted through the paper integrated on the disc between the light emitting diode (LED) and the photodiode (PD) regardless of the ambient light condition. To confirm its efficiency, we analyzed one of the blood's important indicators, glucose in a successful manner within 10 s without any additional complex image analysis. In addition, we discussed the results by comparing with the reflectance-based methods and with those of the previously reported studies by introducing a figure of merit to evaluate the performance of the assay. Small companies encounter difficulties to adapt to new markets with a sustainable perspective. The subject of this article is a paper transformation company which has been eager to develop the organic farming market by developing a new plant support. Alternatives made from plant fibres or plastics exist, such as jute and polypropylene. The main difficulty of this project was to ecodesign a paper product with a multicriteria approach. The factors considered have been divided into two categories. Firstly, the environmental impacts calculated according to the Life Cycle Assessment methodology (on raw material extraction, manufacturing and end-of-life) are summarised. Secondly, the characteristics of the product are discussed in regards to these results and sustainability questions as part of the interpretation phase. In this study, the spreading of a liquid droplet on the surface of a fibrous paper and its penetration into the paper is studied. The spreading of the droplet was visualized using confocal microscopy and the penetration depth was quantified using Automatic Scanning Absorptiometry (ASA) measurements. The three-dimensional structure of the paper was obtained through micro-tomography imaging with a resolution of 0.9 µm. The obtained images were used to reconstruct the pore space, which was in turn used in direct numerical simulations of penetration of a droplet into paper. Simulations were performed using open source code OpenFOAM, which solves equations of two-phase flow (in our case air and water) in pores based on the Volume of Fluid Method. Simulation results showed a good agreement with the experimental observations. In particular, the dimensions of spreading area of a droplet and the depth of penetration were simulated reasonably well. Then, we used the model to investigate effects of changes in various liquid properties on spreading and penetration of a droplet liquid. We made calculations for three different values of contact angle ( CA ): 0°, 60°, and 120°. We found the largest penetration depth for CA  = 0. For CA  = 60 and CA  = 120, we found that the liquid droplet moved sideways from the jetted location, which is not favorable in inkjet printing. We also made simulations with larger values for viscosity and density, based on properties of an ink-based liquid used in inkjet printing. The results have shown a slower spreading and penetration compared with water. Abstract In this study, the utilization of a dry film photoresist (DFR) was explored for fabricating a patterned insulating layer in Ag nanowire (AgNW) bottom electrodes with various designs for flexible organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). With a single hot-pressing step, a pre-patterned DFR insulator was attached onto the AgNW electrodes, thus forming insulated electrodes in desired patterns. In the same hot-pressing step, AgNWs were also embedded into poly(methyl methacrylate), which sufficiently reduced the root mean square (RMS) roughness (~5 nm) for use in OLED lighting. Using DFR, AgNW electrodes with various shapes were fabricated to realize shaped flexible OLED lighting. The performance of OLED lighting employing the AgNW/patterned-DFR insulator electrode was comparable to that of indium‑tin-oxide-based OLED lighting. Further, the DFR insulator was utilized as a planarization layer in a paper-based OLED lighting, which operated well with a turn-on voltage of 3.5 V and maximum luminance of 157 cd/m2 at 7.5 V. Synthetic cannabinoids (SC) are extremely prevalent within the prison system and cause problems for prisoners, law enforcement and health services. SC are often soaked into paper then posted into prisons therefore one of the aims of this research is to collaborate with Rapiscan Systems Ltd. and local prisons in England to measure the effectiveness of trace detection methods for the indication of SC in prison post using the Itemiser 3E®. To ensure compounds did not go undetected, samples with Ion Trap Mobility Spectrometry™ peaks indicative of synthetic cannabinoids on the Itemiser 3E® were analysed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, Liquid Chromatography-Quadrupole Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to identify chemical characteristics which allowed comparison to reference spectra. Sample data spanning three years from one prison's Itemiser 3E® were collated to identify trends in drug prevalence and the influence of library updates. To date, the method has identified four compounds: 5F‐MDMB‐PICA, MMB-4en-PICA, 4F‐MDMB‐BUTINACA and MDMB-4en-PINACA on prison post which were not already included on, or needed confirmatory analysis to update, the Itemiser 3E® library. As a result, the libraries on prison Itemiser 3E®s have been updated to ensure future detection of such compounds. Trends and influences from the processed Itemiser 3E® data were also reported back to the West Midlands Prison Group. Janus membranes with unidirectional liquid transport property have tremendous applications in fields of functional fabrics, water harvesting, smart wound dressings and so on. Paper shows distinct advantages to other materials, such as hydrophilicity, low-cost, flexible and so on. However, there is still less attention on how to construct a Janus paper with unidirectional liquid transport capacity and its functional applications. Here, a multi-pores Janus paper with asymmetric wetting properties is developed through consecutive laser microdrilling, hydrophobic modification and air-plasma treatment. As a result, the prepared Janus paper can allow the water to transport from the hydrophobic side to the hydrophilic side, while it blocks the water to flow in the reverse direction. Meanwhile, it can also achieve antigravity unidirectional water transport. In addition, the mechanism for unidirectional liquid transport is investigated. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, the Janus paper is utilized for applications of information encryption/decryption. The core of decorative laminates is generally made of stacked Kraft paper sheets impregnated with a phenolic resin. As the impregnation process in industry is relatively fast, new methods need to be developed to characterize it for different paper-resin systems. Several phenolic resins were synthesized with the same Phenol:Formaldehyde ratio of 1:1.8 and characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) as well as Size-Exclusion Chromatography (SEC). In addition, their viscosities and surface tensions when diluted in methanol to 45% of solid content were measured. The capacity of each resin to penetrate a Kraft paper sheet was characterized using a new method, which measures the conductivities induced by the liquid resin crossing the paper substrate. With this method, crossing times could be measured with a good accuracy. Surprisingly, the results showed that the penetration time of the resin samples is not correlated to the viscosity values, but rather to the surface tension characteristics and the chemical characteristics of paper. Furthermore, some resins had a higher swelling effect on the fibers that delayed the crossing of the liquid through the paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fracture process in two fiber network materials, a low- and a high-density paper, is analyzed experimentally and numerically. The high-density paper is able to localize continued fracture to very small defects while a rather large defect is required in the low-density paper. Whereas the high-density paper has a homogeneous and limited variation in local mass density, the low-density paper is substantially more heterogeneous and has a higher local mass density variation. It is hypothesized that these fairly large regions of lower mass density govern the fracture process in paper and similar fiber network materials. A nonlocal fracture model is applied to describe and capture this length scale phenomenon and intents to simulate forces bridged over distant regions in the material via connected fibers. The suggested fracture hypothesis is consistent with experiments and hence offers an explanation to why network materials with different mass density variation may fracture differently. A paper-supported inorganic composite (PIC) separator is prepared by spraying Al 2 O 3 particles onto both surfaces of a commercial paper substrate. The as-prepared PIC separator shows excellent thermal stability without any shrinkage at 130 °C for 30 min, superior wettability towards the electrolyte, with a contact angle of 0°, and high ionic conductivity compared with that of the conventional polyethylene (PE) separator. The graphite|LiCoO 2 full-cells with the PIC separator exhibit good cycling and rate performance. In the nail penetration tests, the pouch cell assembled with the PIC separator shows high safety characteristics. Given the advantages of the PIC separator, it is a good potential replacement for the polyolefin separators used in high-safety lithium-ion batteries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The age of a relatively old document is one of the pending issues to be resolved in the field of forensic documentary examination. Although nowadays there are a variety of analytical methodologies focused in the analysis of inks for dating documents, the paper analysis has attained little attention. This work aims to develop two complementary approaches for estimating the age of documents based on paper analysis employing the pyrolysis technique coupled to gas chromatography with detection by mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS): (i) a direct approach using the pyrolytic fingerprints and multivariate regression with artificially aged samples, and (ii) an indirect approach based on the identification of compounds characteristic of the document period. The direct approach has successfully allowed the age estimation of relatively old documents under police custody (up to 30 years of age) and the determination of a relation between the natural and the accelerated aging of paper under the used conditions. This approach is applicable to papers that have the same (or similar) composition and have been stored under comparable storage conditions. This study is an investigation for an inexpensive, simple and sensitive biosensor to detect prostate cancer using bioactivated-multi wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs, diameter of 20 nm, length of 5 µm) and a micro-pore filter paper (pore size of 0.45 µm). For the immunoassay of prostate specific antigen (PSA), which is a biomarker of prostate cancer, MWCNTs were activated with PSA antibody (monoclonal antibody of the prostate specific antigen) by using N-(3-dimethylaminopropyl)-N′-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride (EDC) and N-hydroxysulfosuccinimide sodium salt (NHSS). The activated MWCNTs were deposited on the micro-pore filter paper to use as a biosensor. The prepared biosensor can assay from 0 to 500 ng/mL of PSA level within 2 h with the detection limit of 1.18 ng/mL by the measurement of resistance change. The resistance change was caused by site selective interaction between PSA and PSA-antigen with an inexpensive bench top digital multimeter (5 1/2 digits). The detection range and sensitivity of the prepared sensor are good enough to diagnose the early stage of prostate cancer (> 4 ng/mL of PSA). This paper-based biosensor is about 20 times cheaper (fabricated biosensor price: 2.4 $) and over 10 times faster than enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), which is a general method for the detection of a specific protein in the modernized hospitals. This study examined the relationship between the ambient and surface luminances needed to obtain optimal and minimum allowable device (paper and tablet) readability in low ambient illumination environments (illuminance of less than 300 lx). In addition, the optimum and minimum allowable surface luminances were evaluated according to ambient luminance based on the tablet character contrast ratio. Experiments were conducted based on a method in which the subject directly adjusts the surface brightness of the device, and revealed that the contrast ratio does not influence the surface luminance of a tablet. In cases with a set contrast ratio of 70%, paper and tablet were found to produce different results. We propose a model for obtaining optimal and minimum allowable paper and tablet surface luminances in low ambient illuminance environments. The optimal and minimal allowable surface luminances of a tablet are respectively higher and lower than the ambient luminance. In the case of paper, if a surface luminance of at least 27 cd/m 2 can be obtained, the surface luminance can be lower than the ambient luminance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two simple routes for the synthesis of a paper-TiO 2 composite were tuned up and the efficiency of the resulting paper-TiO 2 photocatalyst was investigated in the 2-propanol oxidation in gas phase. The first route involved the in-situ generation over the sheet of paper of a TiO 2 layer starting from a solution of Ti(OBu) 4 in tert -butanol/acetic acid, followed by hydrothermal treatment at 120 °C for 3 h. The sample was labelled as paper-TiO 2 (H). The second approach was based on the adsorption on the paper of a ready-made suspension of titania nanoparticles (TiO 2 sol), generated in autoclave at 140 °C and stable in acid medium at pH < 3. The sample was labelled as paper-TiO 2 (S). Evidence of the generation of crystalline TiO 2 was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and the morphology of the TiO 2 layer was analyzed by FE-SEM microscopy. The optical properties of the two paper-TiO 2 samples and the surface and bulk chemical compositions were studied by UV–vis, XPS spectroscopies and TGA analysis as well. The surface properties of the two paper-TiO 2 composites in term of wettability were also investigated through water contact angle measurements. The photocatalytic oxidation of 2-propanol in gas phase, under simulated sunlight irradiation in presence of the two paper-TiO 2 samples was studied at room temperature and compared with a commercial sample, TiO 2 P25 (Evonik). Both functionalization approaches led to a photoactive paper capable of the complete decomposition of 2-propanol in CO 2 and H 2 O within acceptable timescale. Laminated paperboard and paper is widely used in packaging products. Its out-of-plane properties play a crucial role in converting paperboard to a carton through the creasing and folding process. The aim of this study is to describe the out-of-plane mechanical response with an elastic-plastic model based on the observed experimental behavior. The model was derived from a thermodynamic framework and was based on the multiplicative split of the deformation gradient in the context of hyperelasticity. A structural tensor-based approach was applied to model the elastic deformation, while a multi-surface based yield criterion was adopted to describe the plastic behavior. The model considers both material densification and internal friction effects, which were observed experimentally. According to the experimental behavior, a quadratic yield locus under pure shear loading was assumed in the model. Finally, the model was validated with a cylinder compression test and found to capture the highly anisotropic, elastic-plastic behavior accurately. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Much research has been focused on maintaining stable humidity conditions in buildings housing heritage collections while reducing energy use. Moisture buffering by collections themselves can have a marked effect on the stabilisation of relative humidity (RH), the key parameter for preservation. Modelling of moisture transport using COMSOL Multiphysics was applied to transform three-dimensional paper and wooden objects into their one-dimensional representations, without changing the moisture uptake and release characteristics. The results were coupled to the modelling of indoor microclimate and energy consumption in collection storage spaces with the use of WUFI ® Plus software. The study revealed the crucial impact of air exchange rate of the building on the stability of indoor RH and the humidification and dehumidification loads required to maintain it. In the adequately air-tight library store, a sizeable paper collection was found to reduce the RH fluctuations from ±9% to ±6% around the yearly average and the energy consumption due to the humidification and dehumidification load by 38% when compared with the empty space, for a high-quality climate control scenario. In turn, a wooden collection, occupying a realistic fraction of a museum store was not large enough to significantly narrow down the RH variations and reduce the energy consumption. Bacteriophages find applications in agriculture, medicine, and food safety. Many of these applications can expose bacteriophages to stresses that inactivate them including acidic and basic pH. Bacteriophages can be stabilized against these stresses by materials including paper, a common material in packaging and consumer products. Combining paper and bacteriophages creates antibacterial materials, which can reduce the use of antibiotics. Here we show that adsorption on paper protects T4, T5, and T7 bacteriophage from acidic and basic pH. We added bacteriophages to filter paper functionalized with carboxylic acid (carboxyl methyl cellulose) or amine (chitosan) groups, and exposed them to pH from 5.6 to 14. We determined the number of infective bacteriophages after exposure directly on the paper. All papers extended the lifetime of infective bacteriophage by at least a factor of four with some papers stabilizing bacteriophages for up to one week. The degree of stabilization depended on five main factors (i) the family of the bacteriophage, (ii) the charge of the paper and bacteriophages, (iii) the location of the bacteriophages within the paper, (iv) the ability of the paper to prevent bacteriophage-bacteriophage aggregation, and (v) the sensitivity of the bacteriophage proteins to the tested pH. Even when adsorbed on paper the bacteriophages were able to remove E. coli in milk. Choosing the right paper modification or material will protect bacteriophages adsorbed on that material against detrimental pH and other environmental challenges increasing the range of applications of bacteriophages on materials. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the potential risk of exposure to nanoparticles of workers in paper mills. In the final stage of the paper production, the very large sheets are wound onto large reels, where these are processed depending on their ultimate use. Paper is smoothed and compacted by passing through metal rollers. During these mechanical treatments nanometric ultrafine particles are generated. In particular, the nanoparticle presence, size and morphology were investigated and differences between particles produced either in summer or winter seasons were explored. To this aim Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) were employed to analyze nano powders filtered in environments of different paper mills to determine structural morphology and sizes. Large breathable particles, with size in the range from 4 μm to 250 nm have been sampled to evaluate the mean level of exposure. By comparing nanoparticles collected from paper mills in summer and in winter we revealed that the number of nanoparticles collected in winter is strictly related to heat generated by the heating system. Paper has been used to engineer many types of bio-diagnostics. A major issue to most paper-based bio-diagnostics is the biomolecule instability causing the short shelf-life of the diagnostics. Commercial papers contain various polymeric additives. Polyamidoamine-epichlorohydrin (PAE), a polyelectrolyte typically used as wet-strength agent, is commonly used in filter papers and paper towels, which are often used as substrate in bioactive paper. However, the effect of cellulose or polymeric additives on antibody bioactivity is unknown. This limits paper optimization for diagnostic applications. In this study, model papers were made with and without PAE addition. IgM Anti-A blood typing antibody was physisorbed and dried on paper, aged for up to 9 weeks at different relative humidity (RH) conditions and the antibody activity was measured. The antibody bioactivity was represented as blood typing efficiency measured by image analysis. The surface chemical composition was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Antibody bioactivity loss was promoted by elevated RH, corresponding to increased paper water content. PAE significantly reduces the paper water content under ambient environment. Antibody bioactivity is higher on paper made with PAE under the high humidity conditions (57.6%–84.3% RH). However, under conditions of humidity saturation (100%RH), PAE shows little effect on reducing paper water content nor on protecting antibody bioactivity. The main area of focus of this paper is the investigation of the link between the pyrolysis conditions, the chemical and mineralogical composition of their products and the benefits of pyrolysis in the waste management sector. More specific the paper covers the fast, intermediate and slow pyrolysis of organic and a mixture of inorganic/organic charge from households. Thermal paper contains potentially toxic compounds such as bisphenol A (BPA), which is used as a color developer. BPA has been reported in thermal paper in concentrations up to 42,600 μg g −1 . The exposure to BPA via dermal transfer has been recently discussed as a significant contribution to the overall human exposure and the estimated daily intake (EDI) has been reported up to 218 μg d −1 . BPA has been also detected in recycled paper with concentrations up to 46 μg g −1 . Due to the fact that BPA is a known endocrine disruptor and migrates from materials, regulatory restrictions have been established to prevent risks for the human health. As a consequence, structural analogues, such as bisphenol S (BPS) have been introduced into the market. Little is known about the presence and toxicity of these emerging replacements, and concern has risen about them. The present review gives an overview of the occurrence and levels of BPA and replacements in thermal paper. BPA is still the most common color developer found in thermal paper, followed by BPS. The analytical methods used for quantification of BPA and BPA replacements in paper products are also reviewed. BPA is transferred from thermal paper products to the finger pads upon handling it. Paper-skin transfer followed by penetration of BPA depends on conditions (e.g. greasiness of fingers and use of hand cream). This work assesses six different agricultural residues with the aim of finding alternative raw materials for a soda semichemical pulping process: stems of bell and chili pepper ( Capsicum annuum ), broad bean ( Vicia faba ), asparagus ( Asparagus officinalis ), pea ( Pisum sativum ), and okra ( Abelmoschus esculentus ). Pulping yields higher than 60% (m/m) were obtained, except for pea stems (43%). The drainability of all the pulps, expressed as the Schopper-Riegler index (ºSR), had values of over 70 ºSR. The Kajaani analyses of the fibers showed acceptable fiber lengths in all cases (0.64–0.92 mm), but on average shorter than the lengths of pulps from a commercial fluting paper (Old corrugated Container, OCC), that was found to be 1.27 mm. Handsheets of paper were produced both with the pulps under study and with mixtures of these pulps with OCC pulp. Several properties were measured to assess the use of the new fibers in a paper for cardboard production. The property showing the greatest differences was the Gurley porosity, ranging from 25 mL/min (asparagus) to 1300 mL/min (broad bean). Of the six residues tested, the okra residue fiber showed better properties than the commercial paper fiber (Concora Medium Test indexes: 1.5 N m 2 /g and 1.1 N m 2 /g respectively, Burst Indexes: 2.3 kPa m 2 /g and 1.7 kPa m 2 /g, respectively), yielding similar mechanical properties to those of high quality fibers obtained from miscanthus ( Miscanthus giganteus ). The paper presents an effective plate formulation based on isogeometric analysis (IGA) and a novel simple quasi-3D hyperbolic shear deformation theory (S-Q3HSDT) to study static bending, free vibration, and buckling behaviors of functionally graded plates. In S-Q3HSDT fashion, five unknowns per node are included; both shear deformation and thickness-stretching effects across the thickness are taken into account; and the awkward shear locking phenomenon is avoided. The requirement for C 1 -continuity in terms of the S-Q3DHSDT is straightforwardly possessed with the aid of inherent high-order continuity of non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS), which serve as basis functions in our IGA formulation. The superior performance and accuracy of the proposed method is demonstrated through numerous numerical examples. The calculated results are then compared with reference solutions, investigating the effects of boundary conditions, gradient index, and other aspect ratios on mechanical responses of functionally graded plates. A deacidifying/antifungal mixture composed of calcium propionate, methylparaben and propylparaben was tested against Aspergillus niger , Cladosporium cladosporioides , Chaetomium globosum , Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium corylophilum . The preventive treatment of paper samples resulted in a complete fungal growth inhibition on 4 of the 5 tested species. The antifungal properties of the formulation remained unaffected for a minimum period of one year. The disinfecting treatment with the mixture led to a total elimination of all tested fungal species. The effects of the tested formulation on paper were evaluated in terms of pH, colourimetry, folding endurance, FTIR and XRD, using moist heat artificial ageing. Aside from plain paper, paper previously colonized by A. niger was tested to evaluate the potential of the formulation in preventing deterioration caused by fungal metabolites. In plain paper, an effective deacidification and long-term prevention of mechanical resistance loss were achieved, although a slight paper discoloration occurred. Volumes from an archive of the University of Milan showed whitish-grey discolouration putatively caused by microorganisms. Microscopic and viability assays proved that discolouration from two volumes were characterized by a marked presence of viable fungi, demonstrating that they were mainly biological in nature. Fungal sequences were phylogenetically most closely related to Eurotium , Aspergillus , Candida , Penicillium , Alternaria , Phaeosphaeria , Capnodiales and Pleosporales taxa. SEM analysis showed that Eurotium halophilicum is dominant on the two infected volumes. Viable airborne fungal loads near the two volumes were higher than recommended maximum values, demonstrating that airborne fungi could represent a source of risk. The airborne microbial community sampled in two different seasons was composed by fungi belonging in the genera Aspergillus , Candida and Eurotium . The detection of E. halophilicum also in the archival air indicated a possible source of contamination. Fluctuations of thermo-hygrometric values were also observed in the archive in the different seasons. The occurrence of white efflorescence on the stored volumes most likely depended on the lack of both a dusting programme and air-conditioning, and insufficient ventilation in the repository, and, on the hygroscopic behaviour of the binding materials used in the manufacture of the volumes. The mechanical response of three different structural core sandwich panels in out-of-plane compression and shear has been analyzed. Specific core shapes examined are arc-tangent, wavy trapezoidal and hemispherical. Unit cells consisting of representative elements of the core attached to face sheets were selected for analysis. Both face sheets and core were assumed made from paper. Finite element analysis employing large deformation and rotations and orthotropic elastic–plastic behavior was used. The results show that the arc-tangent and trapezoidal cores are prone to collapse by extensive bending and buckling, whereas the hemispherical core behaved more stably in compression and shear. Core sheets with a hemispherical shape were prepared from copy paper sheets in a specially designed forming machine. Sandwich test specimens were prepared from this core and tested in out-of-plane compression, and the load-displacement response was compared to predictions from finite element simulations. A piezoelectric based touch sensitive device has been successfully fabricated by screen printing silver (Ag) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) inks as conductive and piezoelectric materials, respectively, on paper substrate. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was performed to verify the formation of β-phase crystals in the PVDF layer during the curing process. Voltages, as high as 0.22 V, were observed for human finger touch tests and a sensitivity of 0.3 V/N was obtained when varying forces ranging from 0.2 N to 1.4 N, in steps of 0.2 N, were applied on the printed device. Commercial inkjet-printers from manufacturers like Epson or Brother can be used for rapid prototype printing conductive traces onto paper or flexible PET substrates by using nanoparticle based dispersions. The surface coating of the substrate influences the attainable electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity as well as the loss tangent, which are important parameters for developing inkjet-printed microwave circuits on paper substrates. For characterizing the permittivity conventional methods are using microstrip ring or microstrip transmission line resonators that require the printing of two electrically conductive layers.
