The conventional multi-zone HVAC (Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system includes a lot of Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes to regulate the corresponding zone temperature, and centralized equipment (air supply fans and ducts, etc.) to supply conditioned air in the air-side. With the limitation of the total supply air mass rate in centralized equipment and the priority of zones' requirement, it becomes a question of resource allocation and schedule on how to coordinate air mass rate to each zone. It is also intricate to control each zone's temperature in a fully distributed fashion due to this global constraint. In this paper, a distributed model predictive control (DMPC) with priority coordination is proposed for multi-zone HVAC systems. This strategy is composed of a priority coordinated layer and a lower DMPC layer. In the coordinated layer, a thermal bound calculation mechanism with priority is presented to adjust thermal bounds for DMPC to resolve the resource allocation problem when the subsystems are competing for the resource. In DMPC, an operational cost-saving controller is put forward, and the global resource limit is guaranteed by transforming the optimization problem into a consensus problem, which is running in a fully distributed way. In this control scheme, the original infeasible DMPC problem is relaxed, and the entire system is functioning well with specified performance compromise. With the rising demand for electrification and intelligent functions in automobiles, the interest in passenger-centric air conditioning thermal management systems has swiftly increased. However, predicting personalized passenger comfort and applicability continues to pose challenges. The main challenge is how to use valid data to accurately predict the individual needs and preferences of different passengers. In this paper, we developed a deep learning model for a passenger-centric air conditioning system using ResNet50 (a deep residual network architecture consisting of 50 neural network layers). A spatial attention model was also incorporated (Attention-ResNet50) to enhance thermal comfort prediction accuracy. Experiments were conducted to collect basic image data under various thermal comfort and environmental conditions. Infrared images were gathered and classified into cold, comfortable, and warm categories for training, validation, and testing. The accuracy of thermal comfort prediction on testing sets is approximately 5 % higher when incorporating the spatial attention mechanism module compared to the standard ResNet50 model. Thermal comfort tests and predictions were also conducted for different genders. The female thermal comfort prediction model demonstrated significantly higher accuracy levels, nearing 100 % in situations characterized by cold or warm scenarios. Cooling of buildings is an essential target for engineers and builders in the hot arid climate of Egypt. Performance of inclined solar chimney with passive cooling tower (SCPC) was studied. The system was integrated into a single room built in Assiut University (El-Gorib site) in Assiut, Egypt. Testing of indoor environment for the room with passive cooling was done during August and September 2015. A passive cooling technique was integrated inside a short wind tower made from expanded paper (wet pad) 0.1 m thick. A water tube was installed on the top of the expanded paper with small nozzles. Water is recirculated through the system using water pump. A reduction of room indoor temperature was observed with the integrated system (SCPC). There is a significant reduction of indoor temperature between 6 and 7 K due to passive cooling with surface temperature 19.4 °C for the cooling pad. The relative humidity did not exceed 57% most of the time. The maximum air speed inside the solar chimney was 3.5 m/s under the effect of a high solar radiation of 890 W/m 2 . The findings show that SCPC system achieves comfortable thermal conditions with a significant improvement in building energy conservation. The result of development this new cooling system helps to develop building code for low energy houses in Egypt and propose a new system to be integrated in the housing project of people with low income. There has been an increasing concern on thermal comfort in sleeping environments and its associated energy use in the past few years. To improve the thermal environment and to reduce energy use of air conditioning in bedrooms, applications of task/ambient air conditioning (TAC) systems were proposed and studied previously. It’s indicated that the TAC system can be well integrated with a bed. Due to the variation of the envelope heat gain in a bedroom during night, it is necessary to study the thermal environment inside a bedroom and the energy use of a TAC system for the bedroom at varying envelope thermal loads. Therefore, this paper reports on a numerical study on a TAC system applied to a bedroom with different envelope heat gains. The influences of envelope heat gain on energy consumption of the TAC system and the indoor thermal comfort were studied in this paper. The research results show that at supply air flow rate ( Q s ) of 50 l/s, energy consumption was increased from 47.78 W to 213.11 W, and the PMV value was increased from −1.69 to −1.29 with the increase in envelope heat gain from 3.11 W to 155.6 W. To make PMV equal to zero under different envelope heat gains, linear regression models between supply air parameters and PMV were built and solved. The obtained values form curves where PMV = 0 and give a guide for operation of the TAC system. A sleeping person is naturally immobile in a relatively small space. Hence, task\ambient air conditioning (TAC) can be best applied to a sleeping environment because of its proven performances in energy saving. However, when using previously developed the TAC systems for sleeping environment applications, cold draft was a serious issue and could hardly be avoided due to a high air velocity and a low air temperature inside an occupied zone. Therefore, in the experimental study reported in this paper, a radiation-based TAC (R-TAC) system has been developed, and its performances experimentally evaluated. In this paper, firstly, an experimental setup for a prototype R-TAC system, and experimental conditions and methods are reported. This is followed by presenting experimental results on the thermal comfort and ventilation performance. Finally, the issues of condensation risk when using the proposed R-TAC system are discussed. The study results presented in this paper have shown that the use of the R-TAC system could not only result in better thermal comfort and ventilation performances, but also effectively resolve the cold draft problem. The air conditioning system in an electric vehicle has to fulfill multiple tasks, which are ensuring thermal comfort for the passengers and tempering the battery. In this paper four model-based control approaches for the air conditioning system are developed. The approaches are compared regarding their ability to track desired references, reject disturbances and avoid windup effects. Two approaches are feedback controllers, a decentralized proportional-integral control strategy and a centralized linear-quadratic-integral control strategy. The other two approaches combine the feedback controllers with an inversion based feedforward controller in a two degree of freedom control structure. In addition, the four concepts are complemented by the Hanus-Conditioned anti-windup mechanism. Three of the four proposed controllers explicitly consider the couplings of the multiple-input-multiple-output system, which allows for a high-performance control. Additionally, all approaches have the benefit of being based on a physical model of the system to be controlled. The development and identification of this physical model is part of the paper. The physical basis for the controllers ensures a high level of reusability and therewith an efficient controller design process. This paper presents an autonomous hierarchical control method for a direct expansion air conditioning system. The control objective is to maintain both thermal comfort and indoor air quality at required levels while reducing energy consumption and cost. This control method consists of two layers. The upper layer is an open loop controller that allows obtaining tradeoff steady states by optimizing the energy cost of the direct expansion air conditioning system and the value of predicted mean vote under the time-of-use price structure of electricity. On the other hand, the lower layer designs a model predictive controller, which is in charge of tracking the tradeoff steady states calculated by the upper layer. Control performance of the proposed control method is compared to a conventional control strategy. The results show that the proposed control strategy reduces the energy consumption and energy cost of the direct expansion air conditioning system by 31.38% and 33.85%, respectively, while maintaining both the thermal comfort and indoor air quality within acceptable ranges, which validate the proposed methodology in terms of both comfort and energy efficiency. A solid-desiccant system that utilizes low grade heat is potentially a viable add-on to conventional HVAC systems since it can help reduce power consumption significantly, for achieving indoor thermal comfort conditions. In contrast to desiccant wheels which carry out adiabatic dehumidification, isothermal dehumidification process that may be realized by a cross-flow heat exchanger is much more efficient. In this paper, a novel mathematical model is developed to simulate heat and mass exchange phenomena of a desiccant coated fin tube heat exchanger (DCFTHX). This model takes solid side mass transfer resistance as well as fin efficiency into consideration. The model is validated using experimental results in the literature. It is also compared against simplified models to establish its utility. A parametric study is then conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical parameters as well as mass flow rate of water and air velocity on dehumidification and adsorption heat removal performance of the DCFTHX as well as the performance of the augmented air-conditioning system under warm and humid ambient conditions. Under the range of parameters and conditions simulated, if low grade waste heat (50 °C hot water) is available for regeneration, integration of DCFTHX sub-system with a conventional air conditioning system can yield as high as 31% energy savings (even when the additional power consumed by pumps and blower fans is accounted for). Due to the increased expectations on human thermal comfort in sleeping environments at a low energy consumption, task/ambient air condition system (TAC) can be the best air conditioning method when considering the immobility of a sleeping person. Previously, convection-based TAC systems for sleeping environments were developed, with an obvious inadequacy of cold-draft problem. Therefore, a new radiation-based TAC system (R-TAC) was previously developed and experimentally studied at a set of fixed design parameter for its radiant panel. Therefore, a follow-up numerical study on the effects of varying design/operating parameters of the radiant panel on indoor thermal comfort and energy saving performances has been carried out, and the study results reported in this paper. Firstly, a geometry model based on the experimental bedroom used in the previous experimental study, boundary conditions and numerical study cases are detailed. Secondly, the results of validating the numerical method using the previous experimental data are reported. Thirdly, the numerical results on indoor thermal comfort, energy saving and draft risk at different surface temperature and emissivity, area of the radiant panel, and the distance between the radiant panel and a bed are presented. The numerical results demonstrated that all the four design/operating parameters of the radiant panel can significantly affect thermal comfort and energy saving performances in the bedroom when using the R-TAC system: increasing surface temperature can lead to a higher PMV value and a higher EUC value; increasing surface emissivity and area of the radiant panel a lower PMV value and a lower EUC value; reducing the distance between the bed and the panel a lower PMV value and a higher EUC value. Finally, the DR values were at a very low level in all the study cases, indicating the cold draft problem encountered when using a convective heat transfer based TAC system for a sleeping environment can be effectively resolved when using the R-TAC system. Abstract: Accurate understanding of the thermal behaviour of building components is essential for predicting heating or cooling needs and facilitates the implementation of more successful energy saving strategies and retrofits. This paper focuses on a specific measure commonly introduced through the residential energy efficiency retrofit programmes in Ireland–insulation. Traditionally, assessments of the performance of building envelopes have been based on assumed thermal resistances of the materials involved, laboratory tests and computer modelling. The aim of the present work is to investigate the in situ thermal behaviour of a case study building and its components under transient and quasi-steady environmental conditions, comparing data before and after the fixing of cavity wall and ceiling insulation. The paper concludes by proposing that predicted values of heat loss using standardised assumed material properties of the existing structure do not reflect the actual values achieved in situ for this test case. Abstract: Air conditioning is essential for maintaining thermal comfort in indoor environments, particularly for hot and humid climates. Today, air conditioning, comprising cooling and dehumidification, has become a necessity in commercial and residential buildings and industrial processes. It accounts for a major share of the energy consumption of a building or facility. In tropical climates, the energy consumed by heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) can exceed 50% of the total energy consumption of a building. This significant figure is primarily due to the heavy duty placed on cooling technologies to remove both sensible and latent heat loads. Therefore, there is tremendous potential to improve the overall efficiency of the air-conditioning systems in buildings. Based on today’s practical technology for cooling, the major components of a chiller plant are (1) compressors, (2) cooling towers, (3) pumps (chilled and cooling water) and (4) fans in air handling units. They all consume mainly electricity to operate. When specifying the kW/Rton of a plant, there are two levels of monitoring cooling efficiency: (1) at the efficiency of the chiller machines or the compressors which consume a major amount of electricity; and (2) at the overall efficiency of cooling plants which include the cooling towers, pumps for moving coolant (chilled and cooling water) to all air-handling units. Pragmatically, a holistic approach is necessary towards achieving a low energy input per cooling achieved such as 0.6kW/Rton cooling or lower by considering all aspects of the cooling plant. In this paper, we present a review of recent innovative cooling technology and strategies that could potentially lower the kW/Rton of cooling systems – from the existing mean of 0.9kW/Rton towards 0.6kW/Rton or lower. The paper, broadly divided into three key sections (see Fig. 2), begins with a review of the recent novel devices that enhances the energy efficiency of cooling systems at the component level. This is followed by a review of innovative cooling systems designs that reduces energy use for air conditioning. Lastly, the paper presents recent developments in intelligent air-control strategies and smart chiller sequencing methodologies that reduce the primary energy utilization for cooling. The energy efficient cooling technology, innovative systems designs, and intelligent control strategies described in the paper have been recently researched or are on-going studies. Several have been implemented on a larger scale and, therefore, are examples of practical solutions that can be readily applied to suit specific needs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Generally, conventional controllers for comfort are designed by using on/off control or proportional-integral (PI) control, with little consideration of energy consumption of the system. This paper presents a multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) model predictive control (MPC) for a direct expansion (DX) air conditioning (A/C) system to improve both indoor thermal comfort and air quality, whereas the energy consumption is minimised. The DX A/C system is modelled into a nonlinear system, with a varying speed of compressor and varying speed of supply fan and volume flow rate of supply air being regarded as inputs. We first propose an open loop controller based on an optimisation of energy consumption with the advantage of a unique set of steady states. The MPC controller is proposed to optimise the transient processes reaching the steady state. To facilitate the MPC design, the nonlinear model is linearised around its steady state. MPC is designed for the linearised model. The role of occupants is important as building energy consumption is significantly attributed to their behaviour. Given the diverse activities within, and high levels of personal control over the indoor environment, occupants’ behaviour is one of the key uncertainties in predicting energy use in the residential sector. With an aim to better understand residential adaptive thermal comfort behaviours, longitudinal field observations were conducted with smartphone surveys and simultaneous temperature measurements in a sample of Australian homes (n = 42). This paper derives statistical models to enable predicting of the percentage of adaptive strategies in use (e.g. operation of air-conditioners, heaters, fans and windows), as a function of temperature. The analysis on our Sydney sample indicated that an outdoor temperature of 25 °C was the most favourable condition, inclusive of all seasons investigated throughout the 2-year monitoring period, maximising the use of natural ventilation and simultaneously minimising the householders’ dependence on their home air-conditioning system. With the outbreak of infectious diseases such as Corona Virus Disease 2019, medical staff work intensively in isolated plots, medical disposable protective clothing (MDPC) has poor air condition and humidity permeability, which seriously reduces the thermal comfort of medical staff. In this paper, the effect of indoor thermal environment and activity levels on thermal comfort inside MDPC was studied by experiment. Five parts of the body were measured inside MDPC and the appropriate movements were chosen to simulate different levels of labor intensity. Meanwhile, physiological parameters and subjective thermal sensation were statistically analyzed. The results showed the influence range of different indoor temperatures on the temperature and humidity inside MDPC was about 1 °C and 10 %, respectively; it indicated that the environment inside MDPC could be improved by reducing indoor temperature, that is, a cross intelligent adjustment mode was proposed. The effect of labor intensity on the temperature inside MDPC was significantly less than that of humidity. Within 20 min, the humidity changes under moderate and heavy labor intensity were even more than 10 %, and the subjective discomfort threshold of the subjects increased by nearly 50 %. Furthermore, the maximum benefit could be obtained by concentrating cooling on back, forehead, chest and upper arm. Theoretical models of working time, labor intensity, and temperature and humidity inside MDPC under different indoor temperatures and different parts were given. In addition, acceptable regions inside MDPC which were approximately parallelogram in the enthalpy-humidity chart. The coupling air organizations between supplying air jets and platform piston winds prevail on the platforms of the subway stations without platform screen doors (PSD) all over the world. The thermal comfort characteristics under the vent are studied in this paper. Firstly, the coupling mechanism of these two airflows is described based on the cross-flow theory. Secondly, Relative Warmth Index (RWI) is selected to evaluate human thermal comfort level with dynamic coupling airflows in the transitional areas. Calculated by the RWI theory model, it can be concluded that air velocities can be enhanced to compensate the supplying air temperature increasing without affecting human thermal sensations with RWI within 0-0.15. Thirdly, experimental studies are carried out and it can be seen that the average RWI values of vertical points under the vent increase from [−0.29, −0.03] in uncoupled conditions to [0.23, 0.14] in coupling conditions, leading to human thermal sensations greatly improved. The experimental RWI values of horizontal points move into the comfort zone a lot under coupling airflows conditions, compared with the uncoupled conditions. In conclusion, the coupling airflows of supplying air jets and cross-flows can improve the transitional thermal comfort and bring forward huge energy-saving potential in air-conditioning systems by allowing the supplying air temperature to be increased in transitional subway stations. To date, religious facilities have received little attention in the published literature regarding energy use and efficiency. With unique operating and building characteristics, these buildings have distinct opportunities for analysis in regards to building energy use and occupant comfort. With overall lower average energy intensity, religious facilities rarely receive energy assessments or are operated by experienced personnel. Therefore, identifying common issues is critical for training church owners in energy efficiency. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems and occupant comfort in two religious facilities. The analysis reveals that the largest opportunities for reduction in energy use come from proper maintenance and operation of HVAC equipment and schedules. Temperature setbacks are shown to be an important operational setting to reduce energy usage. An accompanying analysis on thermal comfort reveals that temperature setbacks must be coupled with sufficient preconditioning of the space to ensure occupant comfort during intermittent building occupancy. Abstract: This paper presents a review of studies on natural convection heat transfer in the triangular enclosure namely, in attic-shaped space. Much research activity has been devoted to this topic over the last three decades with a view to providing thermal comfort to the occupants in attic-shaped buildings and to minimising the energy costs associated with heating and air-conditioning. Two basic thermal boundary conditions of attic are considered to represent hot and cold climates or day and night time. This paper also reports on a significant number of studies which have been performed recently on other topics related to the attic space, for example, attics subject to localized heating and attics filled with porous media. Abstract: In this paper, a solar heating system, which combines the technologies of evacuated tube solar air collector and rotary desiccant humidification together, has been configured, tested and modeled. The system mainly includes 15m2 solar air collectors and a desiccant air-conditioning unit. Two operation modes are designed, namely, direct solar heating mode and solar heating with desiccant humidification mode. Performance model of the system has been created in TRNSYS. The objective of this paper is to check the applicability of solar heating and evaluate the feasibility and potential of desiccant humidification for improving indoor thermal comfort. Experimental results show that the solar heating system can convert about 50% of the received solar radiation for space heating on a sunny day in winter and increases indoor temperature by about 10°C. Compared with direct solar heating mode, solar heating with desiccant humidification can increase the fraction of the time within comfort region from about 10% to 20% for standalone solar heating and from about 30% to 60% for solar heating with auxiliary heater according to seasonal analysis. It is confirmed that solar heating with desiccant humidification is promising and worthwhile being applied to improving indoor thermal comfort in heating season. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: With the actual environmental issues of energy savings in buildings, there are more efforts to prevent any increase in energy use associated with installing air-conditioning systems. The actual standard of thermal comfort in buildings ISO 7730 is based on static model that is acceptable in air-conditioned buildings, but unreliable for the case of naturally ventilated buildings. The different field studies have shown that occupants of naturally ventilated buildings accept and prefer a significantly wider range of temperatures compared to occupants of air-conditioned buildings. The results of these field studies have contributed to develop the adaptive approach. Adaptive comfort algorithms have been integrated in EN15251 and ASHRAE standards to take into account the adaptive approach in naturally ventilated buildings. These adaptive algorithms seem to be more efficient for naturally ventilated buildings, but need to be assessed in field studies. This paper evaluates different algorithms from both static and adaptive approach in naturally ventilated buildings across a field survey that has been conducted in France in five naturally ventilated office buildings. The paper presents the methodology guidelines, and the thermal comfort algorithms considered. The vehicle HVAC (heating, ventilating, and air conditioning) system aims to keep passengers thermal comfort and reduce energy consumption. One effective measure is to use temperature prediction to optimize HVAC systems. This paper aimed to comprehensively investigate the potential of machine learning methods applied to cockpit temperature prediction and proposed a deep learning method considering the Spatio-temporal correlation of the temperature field. Specifically, this study constructs a topological description of the temperature field inspired by the spatial and temporal correlations revealed by the Navier-Stokes equations. The Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) is used to capture the topological structure to obtain spatial features, and the Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU) is used to capture the dynamic change of node attribute to obtain temporal features. Finally, the GCGRU model can extract Spatio-temporal features of the temperature field. The experimental results show that the prediction method using Spatio-temporal features for the temperature field is feasible. The prediction performance is better than all the baseline methods and has the robustness to the data noise. [Display omitted] Pre-cooling is a method to shift peak air conditioning demand to off-peak and shoulder hours by utilizing energy storage in the thermal mass of buildings. This paper evaluates the pre-cooling potential of a range of residential buildings broadly representative of the Australian housing stock. Pre-cooling in 2-, 6-, and 8-star buildings with light, medium, and heavy construction weights in the cities of Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney is simulated, and its impacts on household bills, thermal comfort and peak air-conditioning demand reduction are assessed. Star rating is the method for rating Australian buildings based on their annual heating and cooling demand. The housing assessment by both star rating and construction weight highlights the varied potential of pre-cooling. Pre-cooling sensitivity to air conditioning size is also evaluated by simulating 5 k W th , 15 k W th , and 25 k W th air conditioning sizes representing typical small, medium, and large units in the Australian air conditioning market. Using an adaptive thermal comfort model, the impact of people's thermal comfort expectations on pre-cooling is also considered. The results highlight that compared with 2-star buildings, the percentage of daily cost savings from pre-cooling is considerably higher in 6-star and 8-star buildings. Moreover, with a small air conditioner, 2-star buildings are prone to negative seasonal cost savings as the air conditioner is not able to achieve thermostat temperature settings and hence runs longer. However, pre-cooling does offer considerable discomfort reduction to household members. A maximum summer seasonal cost savings of around $260 is observed in a 6-star light-weight building in Adelaide, and a 2-star light-weight building in Brisbane. Households that accept wider temperature variations with pre-cooling may not necessarily see cost savings. These households do provide greater peak air conditioning demand reductions. Many businesses are looking for ways to improve the energy and carbon usage of their buildings, particularly through enhanced data collection and control schemes. In this context, this paper presents a case study of a food-retail building in the UK, detailing the design, installation and cost of a generalisable model predictive control (MPC) framework for its Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. The hardware/software solution to collect relevant data, as well as the formulation of the MPC scheme, is presented. By utilising cloud-based microservices, this approach can be applied to all modern building management systems with little upfront capital, and an ongoing monthly cost as low as $6.39/month. The MPC scheme calculates the optimal temperature setpoint required for each Air-Handling Unit (AHU) to minimise its overall cost or carbon usage, while ensuring thermal comfort of occupants. Its performance is then compared to the existing legacy controller using a simulation of the building's thermal behaviour. When simulated across two months the MPC approach performed better and achieved the same thermal comfort for a lower overall cost. The economic optimisation resulted in an energy saving of 650 kWh, with an associated cost savings of $240 (an improvement of 1.7% compared to the baseline), while the carbon optimisation gave negligible CO 2 savings due to the inability of the building to shift heating to low-carbon periods. Model predictive control (MPC) has been studied in the building science realm for about three decades. However, the following two aspects of the building control have not been studied thoroughly in MPC research. One is the impact of the mixed-mode cooling system on the active heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy consumption, and the other is the differences of individual thermal comfort preference and its impact on energy. This paper proposes an occupant-oriented mixed-mode EnergyPlus predictive control system to optimize HVAC energy consumption while meeting the individual thermal comfort preference. A web-based dashboard is implemented in the test-bed building for three months to collect individual thermal comfort preference data. The data analysis results suggest that occupants have various tolerances and preferences about thermal comfort. The simulation results show that, during one week of a typical swing season, the mixed-mode system further reduces the active HVAC energy consumption, and the diversified occupant thermal comfort preference has significant impact on HVAC energy consumption. In tropical countries such as India, increasing the roof albedo helps to reduce the heat ingress through the roof. This further reduces air-conditioning energy consumption in conditioned buildings and increases comfort in unconditioned buildings. In order to help users determine the benefits of high albedo roofs under varying conditions, a simple calculator has been developed. Parameters such as location, building type, roof area, and surface properties of the roof are taken as inputs. Annual EnergyPlus simulations are performed for the given parameters and the results are displayed in both graphical and tabular formats. It also calculates the simple payback by comparing a given base case roof albedo with the proposed roof albedo. The calculator can perform comfort simulations for unconditioned buildings and simulates measures including a radiant barrier system and under deck roof insulation. The calculator also runs a parametric simulation between insulation thickness and roof albedo to find an optimum roof insulation thickness based on incremental internal rate of return. In this paper we explore the influence of personal control over space conditioning systems on occupants’ thermal comfort perception. It aims to identify the psychological effects of perceived control as well as the physical impacts when the controllable approaches are utilized. A chamber experiment was conducted, the results from which indicate that subjects with perceived control tended to report more positive comfort perception. The severer the thermal conditions were, the more subjects wanted to use personal control approaches, thus corresponding to stronger psychological effects. When personal control approaches were utilized appropriately, even a slight improvement in thermal conditions could significantly alleviate subjects’ thermal discomfort complaints. This paper systematically reviews literature on passive heating and cooling of buildings using roof ponds. The main aims were to gain a detailed understanding of different roof pond configurations and their performance, compare effectiveness of different roof pond variants, evaluate performance of different roof pond variants relative to other passive design techniques, explore effects of climatic conditions and various design configurations on the performance of roof ponds, and identify gaps in knowledge and data. Overall, 19 roof pond cooling and 4 roof pond heating systems were identified. This review suggests that, in some cases, roof ponds can provide year-round thermal comfort while reducing demand for active heating and cooling systems. Therefore, they can be utilized in efforts towards the goal of carbon–neutral design. Roof ponds with wet gunny bags, shaded roof ponds, ventilated roof ponds, and roof ponds with movable insulation proved to be more effective relative to other variants of roof pond cooling systems. Comparing performance relative to other passive strategies showed that, in many cases, roof pond cooling systems are about equally effective in maintaining indoor thermal comfort. Meteorological conditions, water depth, roof deck material, and thickness of the insulating panel are the main factors affecting performance of roof ponds. Several areas of weakness in the literature are identified. Future research should, among other things, provide more detailed knowledge on performance of all roof pond variants, further explore suitability of roof ponds relative to other passive design measures, examine effectiveness of roof ponds when combined with other passive design measures, analyze life-cycle costs of roof ponds, and provide more knowledge on their real-world application. Faults in heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems cause increased energy consumption, degrading thermal comforts, growing operational cost and reduced system lifespan. An effective evaluation of fault effects is critical to the development of various fault diagnostics solutions, the improvement of operation maintenance and the optimization of monitoring systems. In the HVAC area, a majority of research work in evaluating fault effects was to analyze energy consumption impacts or thermal comfort impacts. However, a handful of research has been conducted on evaluating fault effects on various measurements, which are increasingly employed to monitor equipment's operation. Fault effects on various measurements may display different symptom patterns and present changed sensitivities when the equipment operates under various faults, severity levels, as well as operation conditions. However, a long-term observation of fault symptoms under various operation conditions, different fault types and severity levels to evaluate fault effects is extremely challenging. In this paper, a simulation-based framework was proposed to evaluate fault effects in fan coil units (FCUs). Two metrics namely fault symptom occurrence probability (SOP) and fault symptom daily continuous duration (SDCD) were developed to quantify fault symptoms under various FCU faults. A total of 18 common FCU faults at different severity levels were implemented on the developed HVACSIM+ simulation platform to obtain a full year fault inclusive data set for 48 fault simulation cases. The framework, as well as obtained SOP and SDCD distributions will benefit multiple folds such as the development of probability-based fault diagnostics inference approaches, optimization of sensor location, and fault prioritization. A bed-based TAC system applied to sleeping environments has been developed and its performances experimentally and numerically studied, and the study results are reported in this paper. Firstly, a detailed description of an experimental rig for the bed-based TAC system at two settings is presented with a return air inlet on the wall (Setting 1) and with a return air plenum and inlet placed under the bed (Setting 2). Secondly, the experimental results on the operating performances of the bed-based TAC system at the two settings in terms of thermal environmental control and energy saving are analyzed and reported. Thirdly, to supplement the experimental study for a more detailed analysis on air temperature and flow fields, a follow-up numerical study was carried out and is reported. Both the experimental and numerical study results suggested that the bed-based TAC system at Setting 2 performed better in controlling thermal environment in an occupied zone but with a relatively poorer energy saving performance, as compared to that at Setting 1. Determination of the optimum setpoint temperature of thermostats in various climates is a problem in air conditioning of residential buildings. In this paper, a new method is developed to optimize the setpoint temperature of thermostats in different climates of Iran. Design variables in the optimization process are heating setpoint, cooling setpoint, thickness, and thermal conductivity of insulations in the building envelopes. The optimization goals are minimizing energy consumption and cost of insulations in addition to maximizing thermal comfort of occupants. Thus, the static payback period (SPP) and the predicted percentage dissatisfied (PPD) indices are selected as objective functions which should be minimized in the optimization process. The methods applied to attain these objectives are numerical modeling by EnergyPlus software, Grouped Method of Data Handling (GMDH) type of Artificial Neural Network (ANN), and Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). Therefore in this process, first, EnergyPlus is used to train the neural network. Afterward, the GMDH-type neural network is applied to derive polynomials computing the objective functions from the design variables. Then, Pareto optimal points for the objective functions are obtained through using these polynomials and NSGA-II multi-objective optimization. Finally, the optimum design point is selected for different cities. According to the results, type and thickness of insulation integrated in the building envelopes affect the static payback period and thermal comfort of occupants. For all the climates of Iran, the most appropriate insulation is XPS and the optimum heating setpoint of thermostat is 22 °C. Also, the optimum value for the cooling setpoint pertains to the type of climate, so that this value for Bandar Abbas, Yazd, Tehran, Rasht and, Tabriz is, respectively, equal to 24.5, 24.7, 25.2, 25.3, and 25.6 °C. Moreover, thermal comfort of occupants increases with thickness of insulation, except for Bandar Abbas whose PPD is almost constant. Abstract: HVAC energy savings have been a key focus of recent building energy management efforts, but the savings typically reduce thermal comfort for building occupants. Established thermal comfort models use complex and person-specific parameters, such as clothing insulation and metabolic rate, to predict individual comfort levels, making the design of automated comfort modelling systems a highly challenging endeavour. In this paper, we investigate the use of humidex, which encapsulates both temperature and humidity, as an easily measurable and highly representative indoor thermal comfort predictor. We verify the feasibility of humidex as an indoor thermal comfort predictor by contrasting its performance to that of the best feature set (the feature set that best predicts the thermal comfort) constructed jointly by recursive sequential forward selection and support vector regression. The analysis using the global datasets, including data from seven climate zones across three continents, shows that humidex is a favourable and easily measurable indoor thermal comfort descriptor when humidity is significant. We take away the message from the analysis and design, develop, and deploy a system that couples a deployment of sensor nodes in an office environment, where each node collects the ambient temperature and humidity at each person's desk, and an automated survey mechanism to record people's thermal sensation votes. We use subjective response through the surveys as ground truth to validate the performance of the thermal comfort prediction using humidex. Abstract: Since Willis Carrier’s invention of air conditioning in 1911, we traditionally think about building conditioning in terms of the heating and cooling of a building’s indoor air. A better idea is the heating and cooling of a building’s mass. The latter has been called the radiant method, of which a most attractive strain is the thermally activated building systems (TABS) proposed by Robert Meierhans in 1990s. In this paper, a resistor–capacitor (RC) model is built in Matlab/Simulink for studying the system requirement of a TABS-equipped building-room. Specifically, what is the requirement in the envelope thermal resistance and activated TABS thermal mass of the room so that it is able to keep the room’s indoor operative temperature within the comfort range with its surroundings at neutral mean ambient temperature? Systematic simulations show that at neutral ambient temperature, the room’s manageability requires the correct selection of thermal mass at normal value and thermal resistance within minimum envelope resistance range (MERR). With its surroundings at above neutral ambient temperature, the room with the required mass-envelope combination functions robustly, albeit with a slightly larger operative temperature variation. We introduce the term thermally manageable building, defined as buildings that can be managed with off-peak equipment, either mechanical equipment (e.g., a chiller) or (natural energy gradient driven) low-power equipment (e.g., a cooling tower). Simulation results also show that while the mean operative temperature level is maintained by cooling equipment (mechanical or low-power one), the operative temperature variation is primarily a function of a building’s thermal mass and a building’s envelope thermal resistance and, only to a small extent, a weak function of mean ambient temperature and the diurnal temperature amplitude. Abstract: Earlier studies used field testing of swimming pool temperatures to validate a mathematical model for predicting the temperature of an unheated pool. Combining those results with manufacturers’ data on the performance of vapor-compression air conditioners as a function of heat rejection temperature, the analyses in the paper suggest that rejecting air conditioning heat to a swimming pool can save approximately 25–30% of single-family residential cooling electricity use and reduce cooling electricity demand during peak conditions by 30–35%, as compared to using the same compressor to reject the heat to ambient air. The savings is expected to vary depending on the severity of the climate, as well as the pool temperature experienced during the summer. The original model was refined so as to accommodate air-conditioner heat rejection to predict pool temperatures based on weather data, pool size, shading of the pool, and air-conditioner heat rejection to the pool. The results of an experimental validation of the augmented pool thermal model are presented here. In addition, the model of a pool-coupled air conditioning system was used to develop a design tool for determining the pool size needed to absorb realistic heat rejection from air conditioners in various California climate zones. Abstract: In the museum environment, the temporal stability and the spatial uniformity of the indoor microclimatic parameters are necessary primarily for the correct artwork conservation and then for the occupant thermal comfort. Therefore, a HVAC system is usually necessary. This paper above all emphasizes the integration of Building Energy Performance Simulation (BEPS) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes. This coupled numerical approach can provide accurate information about both the HVAC system energy request and the indoor microclimatic control (temporal and spatial distribution of the parameters). Then, a case study concerning a typical museum exhibition room is examined. The annual energy request for three types of all-air system, as well as the temporal variation of indoor temperature and relative humidity, is evaluated by means of a BEPS code. Energy savings can be obtained using a system with desiccant wheel (11%) or enthalpy wheel (9%), compared to the base system. As regards indoor relative humidity control, this is more critical for summer conditions, and the best performance is obtained by the system with desiccant wheel. Then, the spatial microclimatic control is analyzed by means of a CFD analysis, for various thermal load conditions and different air diffusion xequipments. The best performances are obtained by using the swirling (vortex) diffusers; also the perimetrical stripes of slot diffusers show satisfactory performances. Abstract: Energy efficiency and energy saving are important concepts bearing in mind by governments and population during the last years. There exist a widespread concern about fossil fuel depletions and the consequent sharp rise in their value. In particular, building is an area highly influenced by those issues. Studies indicate that 40% of the energy generated worldwide is consumed inside buildings, and then, measures to reduce energy consumption are required. In this work, an optimal controller for distributing the energy consumption rate inside a building and preserving, at the same time, the user welfare is proposed. More precisely, the paper presents a predictive control approach that obtains a high thermal comfort level optimizing the use of an HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system by means of a cost function. The optimization procedure is based on the Lagrangian dual method, which allows the use of parallel programming paradigms in an easy way. Abstract: An experimental study is reported in this paper for a diffuse ceiling ventilation concept. The analyses were carried out with two different porous surfaces mounted in a suspended ceiling: perforated tiles of aluminium and of gypsum. Ventilation air was supplied above the suspended ceiling effectively creating a plenum for air distribution. The experiments were carried out in a climatic chamber and documented an air change efficiency equal to fully mixed conditions with a pressure drop of 0.5–1.5Pa and with no evidence of thermal discomfort. The magnitude of the pressure drop was enough to sustain the pressure of the plenum and ensure uni-directional airflow through the ceiling. Consequently only reverse flow of insignificant magnitude was observed which has a positive impact on the hygiene of the plenum. Furthermore, the measurements documented that the ceiling acts as a radiant cooling surface which increases the potential and applicability of the concept. Risk of thermal discomfort was not disclosed but the study did show evidence of large fluctuating air movements which could stem from transient behaviour creating sensations of draught to the occupants. Abstract: This paper presents the effect of operating water mist system to enhance the energy efficiency of air-cooled chillers under various operating conditions. A thermodynamic model for an air-cooled chiller with twin refrigeration circuits coupled with a water mist system was developed and validated by measured operating data. The validated model was used to investigate how the thermal properties of the entering condenser air and the performance of the air-cooled chiller varied under different operating schemes with water mist pre-cooling. Under the conventional head pressure control (HPC) with a designed water mist generation rate, the coefficient of performance (COP) increased by up to 21.3%. The chiller performance could be improved further under variable condensing temperature control (CTC). Under CTC, chiller COP was increased up to 51.5% with optimal water mist generation rate. The potential energy savings of these chillers serving a representative office building in subtropical climate was evaluated, and CTC coupling with optimal water mist generation rate would reduce the annual total electricity consumption for cooling by 14.1%. The water consumption of the water mist system was comparatively small, comparing with the total water losses for an open-loop cooling tower system with equivalent heat rejection capacity. Abstract: This paper deals with individual air-to-air heat pumps in Danish dwellings and summerhouses and the question of to what extent they actually deliver savings of energy consumption. Results show that 20% of the expected reduction of electricity consumption is converted into increased comfort in the homes, including extended heating areas, keeping a higher temperature and a longer heating season and using the heat pump for air conditioning. Data include electricity consumption in 185 households before and after installation of heat pumps together with survey results of 480 households. Furthermore, 12 households were selected for in-depth analysis including technical inspection and qualitative interviewing. Especially for summerhouses, results indicate that on average there is no reduction in electricity consumption, as energy efficiency is counter balanced by increased comfort and changed heating practices. Abstract: Following the Japanese Cool Biz campaign which advocated relaxed dress codes and cooling set-points of 28°C in air-conditioned public buildings, other countries have introduced similar policies, with temperature limits varying in different countries. In the UK the British Council for Offices suggested that the summer cooling set-points of UK air-conditioned offices should be increased by 2°C from the previously recommended 22±2°C. However, these recommendations are largely supported by desk-based analysis rather than using field studies. This paper presents the findings of a blind, controlled intervention study conducted in the summer of 2010 in an office building in London to investigate the effects of increasing the current cooling set-point to 24°C. The temperature of one floor was changed and compared with a ‘control’ floor where the set-point remained unchanged. The indoor air temperatures were measured at various locations across the floors to monitor the temperatures the occupants were experiencing. The BUS post-occupancy evaluation survey was used to assess occupants’ self-reported comfort and satisfaction, whilst the NEP questionnaire was used to estimate occupants’ environmental attitudes. The findings from statistical analyses of the data collected for all 129 participants suggest that increasing the set-point temperature led to the occupants feeling significantly warmer in comparison with the group at lower temperature settings. Nevertheless, this did not affect the self-reported thermal comfort of the occupants in the intervention group, as depicted by an insignificant difference between the two groups. It was also observed that there is a positive correlation between the occupants’ tolerance of higher indoor air temperatures and their environmental attitudes, indicating that this could play a key role in the acceptance of indoor temperature changes in the UK. Abstract: In Hong Kong, conventional air-conditioning (AC) systems cause a high energy consumption and poor indoor thermal comfort. This paper investigated the AC load profiles of three typical local commercial buildings, i.e. office, hotel and retail, and examined the energy consumption of liquid desiccant cooling system (LDCS) for these buildings. Simulation results showed that the cooling load contributed to more than 98% of total annual load, with high latent load proportion from March to September. The high reheating ratio, i.e. from 60% to 90%, is found to be the main reason for the poor thermal comfort. Therefore, the LDCS which could handle sensible and latent loads separately was proposed. However, the electricity-driven LDCS was found not suitable for local commercial buildings. significant energy saving could be achieved by the solar-assisted LDCS system with thermal storage, when the installation area for solar collectors is larger than the minimum required one, i.e. 9.7m2/(kWm−2) for office and 12.7m2/(kWm−2) for hotel buildings. Energy saving of different system types with different installation areas was also studied. The solar-assisted LDCS shows more energy saving in winter but less in summer. Abstract: Presently the essential research trend for sustainable buildings is the use of renewable energy sources and the development of new techniques of energy storage. Phase change materials (PCMs) may store latent heat energy in addition to the typical sensible energy capacity of current building materials, allowing to store significantly more energy during the phase change process (solid to liquid and vice versa). The incorporation of PCMs into building envelope solutions takes advantage of solar energy, contributing to the overall reduction of energy consumption associated to use of the air conditioning systems. This paper presents and discusses research developed in two main components: experimental testing and numerical simulation of a building component with PCM incorporation. The main goal of the experimental testing carried out was to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of PCM macro encapsulated into a typical Portuguese clay brick masonry enclosure wall. It is evaluated the influence of the phase change process of the PCM over the attenuation and time delay of the temperature fluctuations for indoor spaces. The experimental results allowed the calibration and validation of the numerical model, enabling to carry out parametric studies with different PCMs quantity analysing consequent temperature damping and time delay. Abstract: This paper investigates the indoor thermal conditions in fifty low income non air conditioned houses in Athens, Greece, during the extremely hot summer of 2007. Hourly indoor temperature data have been analysed during three extended heat waves. Indoor temperatures as high as 40°C were recorded and the average indoor minimum temperature was always above 28°C. Mean indoor temperatures during the hot season were up to 4.2K above the normal climatic period, while the daily increase rate varied from 0.2K/day during the first up to 0.8K/day for the peak days of the heat wave. The exposure of inhabitants to high temperatures is very important because for almost 85% of the hot period, indoor temperature exceeded 30°C. Periods of about 216 continuous hours above 30°C, and six days above 33°C were recorded in many buildings. The dynamics and the evolution of indoor temperatures as a function of the outdoor climatic characteristics and the thermal capacitance of the buildings are analysed. Abstract: Solar absorption cooling systems are available from various reports, in large capacities up to several hundred kilowatts. However, in the range of small capacities (<50kW), only very few systems were reported. In this paper, a mini-type solar absorption cooling system was designed and installed at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The system contains 96m2 solar collector arrays, one absorption chiller with a rated cooling capacity of 8kW, and a hot storage water storage tank of 3m3 in volume. The chilled water can be delivered either into fan coils or into radiant cooling panels, which are installed to satisfy the demands of the indoor thermal environment of the test room. As for the fan coil cooling mode, it was found that the average cooling output reached 4.27kW during 9h of operation under typical weather conditions for Shanghai. The PMV (predicted mean value, a measure of thermal comfort) inside the test room could be controlled between −0.29 and 0.32. With regard to the radiant cooling mode, an individual supply air unit was installed for the purpose of preventing condensation on the cooling panels. Abstract: The main focus of this paper is a literature review of analyses of high performance indoor environments which aid in the design of appropriate energy efficient Heating-Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. In the past, investors planned and built interiors primarily according to economic considerations. Aspects of performance-oriented interior spaces were not taken into account. Yet, to meet growing expectations and requirements, it is necessary to combine thermal comfort features and energy efficient HVAC systems. A huge amount of electricity is necessary for the operation of these systems. Overall, one-third of the final energy is consumed by the provision of space heating and hot water in Germany. More than 95% of this demand is met through the use of fossil fuel. There is, however, a great potential to reduce CO2 emissions. Forward-thinking planning includes both the careful use of resources and the optimization of performance promoting rooms. However, the current applications of TAC systems are mainly for daytime activities, but seldom for nighttime. In fact, TAC systems may be best applied to a sleeping environment, since the subjects to be served by a TAC system are immobile during sleep. Therefore, there is a strong need for studying the operational and energy saving performance of TAC systems when applied to sleeping environments. This paper reports on an experimental study on evaluating the operational and energy saving performance of a novel bed-based TAC system. The experimental results and their analysis demonstrated that the use of the novel bed-based TAC system can help achieve energy saving, compared with the use of a full volume air conditioning (FAC) system. Considering the experimental limitations, the energy saving potential of the novel bed-based TAC system if used in an actual bedroom was studied through a theoretical analysis. Abstract: In earlier work , NIST developed a climate suitability analysis method to evaluate the potential of a given location for direct ventilative cooling and nighttime ventilative cooling. The direct ventilative cooling may be provided by either a natural ventilation system or a fan-powered economizer system. The climate suitability analysis is based on a general single-zone thermal model of a building configured to make optimal use of direct and/or nighttime ventilative cooling. This paper describes a new tool implementing this climate suitability methodology and its capability to consider an adaptive thermal comfort option and presents results from its application to analyze a variety of U.S. climates. The adaptive thermal comfort option has the potential to substantially increase the effectiveness of natural ventilation cooling for many U.S. cities. However, this impact is very dependent on the acceptable humidity range. If a dewpoint limit is used, the increase is significant for a dry climate such as Phoenix but much smaller for humid climates such as Miami. While ASHRAE Standard 55 does not impose a limit on humidity when using the adaptive thermal comfort option, the necessity of limiting humidity for other reasons needs to be considered. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a three dimensional study for evaluating the temperature profiles and air flow movement in a model room with a numerical model based on the Euler equations. Numerical results obtained for two scenarios of ventilation and air conditioning are compared with the predictions of a Navier–Stokes model. These numerical results are validated by experimental results measured in the model room. A comparison of the local thermal comfort indices PMV and PPD obtained experimentally and numerically is also presented. Results show that the Euler model is able to predict adequately total thermal comfort in the model room. Furthermore, the use of Euler equations allows a reduction of computational time in the order of 50% compared to the Navier–Stokes modeling. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Natural ventilation can contribute to the reduction of the air conditioning demand and to the improvement of thermal comfort in buildings. In this paper, the flow field and the air change rate generated by a simple configuration of natural ventilation, namely single-sided ventilation, are examined experimentally. The experiments are realized in a full scale building exposed to outdoor conditions, using several measurement techniques. The main features of the flow generated by stack and wind effect are examined for different outdoor conditions (temperature difference, wind speed and direction). Finally, measured air change rates are compared to those calculated by existing correlations in order to analyze their applicability to the experimental configuration. Results show that the wind generates turbulence diffusion at the opening, counteracting the stack effect. Moreover, in the case of windward opening, there is an additional effect, namely the effect of mixing layer, which tends to increase the airflow rate. Existing correlations give reasonably good results in the case of windward opening, while in the case of leeward opening they overestimate the airflow rate. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper explores the potential of reducing the annual energy consumption of a central air-conditioned building through advanced evaporative cooling systems. The building considered is a typical three floor library building of a University. The regenerative evaporative cooling technology is coupled with the liquid cooled water chiller system to accomplish the energy conservation objective. Comparisons of the regenerative evaporative cooling are made with simple evaporative cooling to bring out the importance such a system. The well-known building simulation software, TRNSYS is used to carry out the heat load calculations and the dynamic simulations of the building. Annual energy consumptions of different components of the air-conditioning system are estimated for the existing water chiller system as well as for both coupled evaporative cooling systems (simple and regenerative). The annual energy consumptions, the indoor temperature, the relative humidity and the thermal comfort index ‘PMV’ are compared for all the three different air-conditioning systems. The coupling of direct and regenerative evaporative cooling technologies with water chiller system has shown, respectively, 12.09% and 15.69% savings in annual energy consumption of the building, while maintaining PMV between −1 and +1 for most of the hours in the year. Abstract: Thermally Activated Building Systems (TABS) are regarded as top-cooling systems rather than full air-conditioning systems. Therefore, adaptive thermal comfort models (ASHRAE55, ISSO74 or EN15251) are supposed to be applicable to TABS buildings, although the comfort model conditions are not necessarily satisfied. This paper investigates whether, for a moderate climate and with the heating and cooling set points chosen according to the adaptive models, the building’s energy use reduces. After all, applying adaptive models, if appropriate, is thought to lower energy use because higher maximum operative zone temperatures T op,max are allowed, compared to the conventional ISO7730 model. For purpose of generality, a building with an ideal heating and cooling system is considered. Analysis of moderate climate weather data reveals a low energy reducing potential for the ASHRAE55 and ISSO74 model, because high reference outdoor temperatures hardly occur. EN15251 on the other hand, allows very high T op,max and will lower the cooling need. A 2-zone building simulation demonstrates a higher cooling need for ASHRAE55 and ISSO74, compared to ISO7730. Because cooling is needed during the whole year, the lower winter T op,max of these adaptive models causes these unexpected results. Abstract: Passive cooling is considered as an alternative technology to avoid unwanted heat gains, to reduce urban heat islands and to generate cooling potential for buildings (limiting air-conditioning energy). According to materials and surface treatments, the roof can represent to be a major heat gain source from opaque elements of the building fabric, heating up the outer surface and increasing heat flow by conduction. This paper presents low-cost new radiative materials (1∉/m2) allowing to limit heat gains during diurnal cycle for hot seasons. To evaluate the relevance of these new substrates, their reflective UV–VIS–IR behavior are studied and compared to classical roofed materials available in industrial and developing countries. A 48m2 experimental roof having different surfaces (plate steel sheets, fiber cement, terra cotta tiles and corrugated sheets) allows to determine the temperature ratio δ between uncoated and coated materials. Up to 34% surface temperature gains are obtained for white coated CS, 25% for FC and ∼18% for TCT and PSS. According to uncoated materials for a surface temperature T 0 =60°C, simulations showed that the low-cost white opaque reflective roofs (50m2) presented in this study would reduce cooling energy consumption by 26–49%.
