Research on soil microplastics is currently at an early stage, and there is no widely approved sampling protocol. Even so, any basic research should minimize errors to ensure that they are not amplified in future research. This paper examines some weaknesses of the original research paper 'Soil microplastic pollution under different land uses in tropics, southwestern China' recently published in this journal. The authors neglected to report the equipment used for soil sampling and did not use field blank samples. There is also a soil layer that was incorrectly named. The type and pore size of filter paper used for filtration during pre-analytical soil sample preparation is very important. In this paper the nature of the filter paper used, and its larger pore sizes are questionable by today's scientists. In addition, the authors in the original paper also overlooked reporting the statistical package used for statical analysis and ensuring if all data sets obey normality, homogeneity, and equality before running the one-way ANOVA test. This statistical step is widely considered mandatory, especially in the soil science community. So, this makes it difficult to trust the results documented. Furthermore, in the original paper, the needle and stereo microscope instruments used to sort microplastic-like materials prior to proper analysis are not reliable. This paper aims to assess the current knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of nursing staff regarding sarcopenia and explore associating factors that influence them. Sarcopenia has an insidious onset and is easily overlooked. However, it is has become very common in older people, seriously jeopardizing the quality of life in patients. The present situation of nurses in China is inadequate, even though they are the primary professionals tasked with screening for sarcopenia, the ability to recognize and effectively manage the disease, and the critical role they play in preventing and controlling sarcopenia in patients. We conducted a cross-sectional design of nurses. Facilitated sampling was used in seven hospitals in Jiangsu Province, China. A total of 409 hospital nursing staff participated in the survey from December 2022 to March 2023. The main survey instruments were the nursing staff about the knowledge of sarcopenia, beliefs, a behavior questionnaire, and a self-designed general information questionnaire. Descriptive of general data, t-test, and ANOVA for influencing factors of three dimensions, whereas multiple linear regression analyses were performed using SPSS23.0 software. Questionnaires were distributed to 460 nurses, and of the 426 (92.6%) questionnaires returned, 409 (96.0%) were valid. The total mean score of nurses' knowledge, beliefs, and behavior about sarcopenia was 125.42 (SD 18.97), the mean score of knowledge latitude was 29.09 (SD 7.80), the mean score of attitude dimension was 57.53 (SD 7.63), and the mean score of behavior latitude was 38.80 (SD 10.71). Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that the nurse's position, Knowledge of sarcopenia, whether or not they were specialist nurses and years of experience in the workplace were the most significant factors correlated with the level of knowledge, belief, and practice (P < 0.05). In China, nurses have little knowledge about sarcopenia, but their attitude towards sarcopenia care is positive. However, there is potential for improvement in nursing behavior toward sarcopenia management. Managers are advised to develop targeted training programs for nurses. • The impacts of gradation types and compaction levels of PAM on the pavement performance of SFP is analyzed. • The volumetric properties of PAM with different gradations change in linear trends as different compaction levels are used. • Proper compaction level and higher VFA could together make SFP more cracking-resistant. • SFP samples fabricated with the VCV of PAM lower than 19% exhibit excellent all-around pavement performances. Semi-flexible pavement (SFP) has been widely used to address rutting distress across China in recent years. The field application shows that SFP has excellent anti-rutting performance but relatively poor anti-cracking ability when compared with flexible asphalt pavement. Formation of cementitious network is closely related to the connected voids within porous asphalt mixture (PAM). Different gradations and compaction levels would contribute to different volumetric contents and distribution of connected voids in asphalt skeleton. Thus, the pavement performance of SFP could be theoretically regulated by using different combination of gradations and compaction levels for PAM fabrication. However, the relationship between aforementioned two factors with pavement performance of SFP is not well established. Therefore , volumetric properties of PAM samples fabricated with three different gradations and three compaction levels are characterized firstly in present paper. The pavement performances of grouted samples are evaluated then. Afterwards, the relationship between volumetric parameters of PAM and pavement performance of SFP are analyzed. In the end, the reusable two-factor analysis of variance is carried out to check the significance of different factors. Results show that the 25℃ IDT strength of SFP ranges from 0.7 to 1.0 MPa while that of PAM is from 0.3 to 0.6 MPa by using different gradation types and compaction levels. TSR of all the SFP samples exceed 80%, which indicating that SFP has excellent anti-freeze–thaw ability. The Cantabro loss of SFP can be approximately decreased from 13% to 9% by using finer gradation. Different SFP samples have similar flexural strengths but significantly different maximum flexural strain and modulus. It is found that gradation type has the more significantly impacts on the pavement performance of SFP than compaction level. Based on the results in present paper, SFP samples fabricated with the VCV of PAM lower than 19% exhibit excellent all-around pavement performances. Abstract: The objective of this paper is to deal with the performance evaluation problem in the presence of large dimensionality of data set, in which there exist multiple correlations among the original variables. Firstly, this paper analyzes the weakness of principal component analysis (PCA), and introduces a maximum variance method to reduce data dimension via Gram–Schmidt process, through which the corresponding transformed variables (Schmidt variables) can be obtained. And at the same time, a measure of investigating the cumulative variation information for selected Schmidt variables is described. Then based upon the chosen Schmidt variables, a new modified DEA approach with a natural assurance region (AR) is presented. In the developed DEA approach, the selected Schmidt variables are treated as outputs. The proposed approach will be then contrasted with the traditional CCR DEA model and the DEA model using principal components obtained from PCA with simulated data, and it is also applied to real world data set that characterizes economic performance of 31 provinces or cities in China. Abstract: The application of phytolith analysis in wetlands to reconstruct the paleoenvironment relies on the research of phytoliths of modern wetland plants. In this paper, 31 selected wetland plant species, belonging to 14 families and 26 genera, were studied. An inventory of phytolith types is provided and type-frequencies are assessed. There are 19 main kinds of phytoliths in this paper: elongate, cross, bilobate, scutiform phytoliths, lanceolate, fusiform phytolith, rondels, achene phytolith, silicified stomata, conical phytoliths, tracheid phytoliths, epidermal cells, trapeziform crenate, cylindrical polylobate, wavy trapezoid, cuneiform bulliform cells, sleeper-type, saddle and silicified hair cells. The taxonomic diagnostic potential of phytoliths (where the silicified stomata are outside) was tested by cluster analysis, which, to a certain extent supported the hypothesis that plant species can be identified on the basis of type, presence and frequency. Conical phytoliths were analyzed separately and results showed that Cyperaceae species can be distinguished by conical phytoliths at the species level. Silicified stomata dimensions were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, which found large disparities in the length and width, and a size category system of silicified stomata dimensions was developed, classifying the major groups into four subgroups. The current study shows that size and shape can be used to assign some of the silicified stomata to their respective genera. The percentage of stomata was also analyzed and the results revealed that there are more stomata in hydrophytes than mesophytes. These results reinforce the utility of using phytoliths as significant indicators for wetland plants and offer the potential of phytolith analysis for paleoenvironment and paleoclimate reconstruction in this region. Vinegar-baked Radix Bupleuri (VBRB) is usually used to focus other drugs effect on liver in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). However, no sufficient scientific data are available to support this concept. In this paper, the liver targeting enhancing effect of VBRB on rhein was investigated. 432 of rats were divided into two large groups according to the dose of rhein, low dose group of rhein (LDGR) and high dose group of rhein (HDGR). In each group, the rats were further divided into four subgroups, rhein control and rhein co-administered with three different doses of VBRB peroral. Concentrations of rhein and its metabolite in different tissues were determined by HPLC. Compared to the control group, VBRB significantly increased the distribution of both rhein and its metabolite in liver and meanwhile decreased their distribution in other tissues, indicating a strong liver targeting enhancing effect. This liver targeting effect of VBRB depended on the dose of VBRB and rhein. Low and high dose of VBRB had a more strong effect than medium dose in HDGR; high dose of rhein was more sensitive than low dose of rhein (P <0.05). Rhein existed in two forms after peroral administration in vivo. It was found that the liver targeting effect of VBRB was more remarkable with the native form of rhein compared to its derivative form. The results of this paper demonstrated that co-administration with VBRB is a simple and efficiencient method for liver targeting therapy, and the meridine guide theory of TCM was credible. A better understanding of the carbon market can guide further reforms to improve its functionality. Market efficiency is a key indicator to uncover its current performance. Previous studies have revealed passed carbon market efficiency; however, given the dynamics of the market, it is worthy to track the up-to-date status. This paper, specifically, studies the Hubei pilot carbon market, which is quite interesting, considering its market scale, as well as the COVID-19 pandemic context. Wild bootstrapping Variance Ratio test is implemented to detect the market efficiency with the most recent and abundant data. Results show that the market efficiency in the period of 2014–2020 is around 0.3951, less than 1, suggesting a weak form of efficiency. Observing the sub-sample periods, the efficiency shows to be quite volatile: it climbes from 0.3621 to 0.4027 and finally drops to 0.3985. Furthermore, the market efficiency soares after the COVID-19, which echoes the smooth local reopening thanks to supporting policies. To some extent, this study enlarged the analysis of COVID-19 impact on the industrial sector and for this reason it provides important reference for further research. The large public building energy consumption (BEC) is the focus of Building Energy Saving, therefore, it is necessary to study the characteristics of BEC to find out the important factors affecting BEC. For this purpose, 27 office buildings in the west of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region were studied, based on statistical analysis of the researched basic information and energy consumption bill of these buildings. This paper focused on the determination of the significant factors affecting the total and subentry energy consumption intensity (ECI) of office building, as well as the establishment of standardized linear regression models between these selected factors and total and subentry ECI. Firstly, eleven continuous variables, three independent categorical variables, and the climate factor were selected and analyzed the impact on total and subentry ECI by statistical software SPSS20.0, in order to find out the significant influencing factors. Then based on the results of curve fitting, standardized models of total and subentry ECI and their respective significant impact factors were established using multiple linear regression analysis. The regression results showed that the electricity use percentage of the total equivalent electricity consumption was an important factor affecting the total ECI of office building in the west of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Finally, univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted between the three independent categorical variables and the total and subentry ECI, and the results showed that these factors had no significant effect on the ECI of office building. A cross-sectional study of a large, middle-school student sample ( N = 966) was presented in this paper aiming to examine how parental behavior and self-control influence Internet addiction (IA) among Chinese adolescents. Fifty-one adolescents (the top 5% of IA score distribution) were categorized as at high risk. Males were more likely addicted to Internet than females. MANOVA demonstrated that, compared with non-IA group, adolescents with IA revealed lower mean score for parental positive support behavior and higher for parental negative control behavior and had lower capacity of self-control. SEM analyses revealed that low capacity of self-control had a negative correlation with parents’ positive support and a positive correlation with negative control. More importantly, Internet addiction was explained negatively by parents’ positive support and positively by parents’ negative control and individual low capacity of self-control. Further mediating analyses indicated that self-control accounted for an indirect role between parental behavior and adolescents’ Internet addiction. The findings of the present study are of significance in investigating adolescents’ problem behaviors and very helpful to provide educational advice for intervening in these behaviors. Yield comparison and stability evaluation of genotypes based on multi-environment trials (MET) play an important role in crop breeding and varietal recommendation for crop production. Usually, analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used for yield comparison, whereas other models (e.g. Shukla's and multiplicative models) are used for stability evaluation. This analysis methodology has the weakness that on the one hand the variance heterogeneity of genotypes (i.e. stability) cannot be accounted for in yield comparison, and on the other hand assumptions about variance–covariance of genotype effects stability evaluation are not identical to that in yield comparison though the trial and hence the data are the same. Furthermore, the eventual error variation due to different levels of trial precision across different environments cannot be accounted for in both yield comparison and stability evaluation. In this paper, the mixed model with various variance–covariance structures allowing for accounting for variance heterogeneity of both genotype and residual error effects was used to fit the seed yield data from a ( Brassica napus L.) MET with thirteen rape genotypes (QS101–QS113) and randomized complete block design at each test environment for the upper reaches of the Yangtze River of China. The variance components of the best fitting mixed model served as measures of stability, and yield comparisons of genotypes were made also on the basis of the best fitting model. The result showed that the variance–covariance characteristics of both genotypes and residual errors affected stability evaluation of rape genotypes. Appropriately incorporating this information in estimating and statistical testing of genotype effects based on mixed model methodology was important for yield comparison of rape genotypes; Compared to the check (QS108), QS113 highly significantly ( α = 0.01) increased yield by 10% with high stability; QS109 highly significantly and QS104 significantly ( α = 0.05) increased yield, respectively, by 10.4% and 6.2%, respectively, with low stability; QS102, QS101, QS110 and QS105 were superior only in term of stability; the other six genotypes were inferior in term of both significant yield difference and stability. Abstract: In this paper, the spatio-temporal variation and trend of daily actual evapotranspiration (ETa) are calculated for the Haihe River Basin from 1961 to 2010. The methodology is based on the complementary relationship approach, i.e. the advection–aridity (AA) model with parameter validation from 1961 to 2010, which allows the determination of ETa that cannot be instrumentally measured. Daily data on mean/maximum/minimum temperature, air pressure, actual water vapor pressure, sunshine hours, wind speed, sunshine duration and cloud cover from 31 meteorological stations from 1961 to 2010 are used in order to identify the main drivers of changes in evapotranspiration. The trend tests applied in this study are the linear regression method and the nonparametric Mann–Kendall test (MKtest). The results show: 1) the Haihe River Basin has an annual ETa at about 484 mm/yr. The highest ETa occurs in summer, followed by autumn. From 1961 to 2010, the annual ETa, the ETa in summer and the ETa in autumn show a significant negative trend in the Haihe River Basin. The ETa varies insignificantly in spring and winter; 2) the ETa shows distinct spatial variability in the Haihe River Basin. It closely follows the topography and increases with greater distance from the sea, but varies significantly during the seasons; 3) the central plain area of the Basin around the capital city of Beijing shows the highest occurrence of negative trends of ETa with a decrease of ETa of 40 mm for the time series. 4) negative trends of ETa in summer are related to multiple factors: decreasing relative humidity and decreasing reduced sunshine duration under increasing surface temperatures in summer. Increases in surface temperature include the mean, maximum and minimum daily temperature. The decline of ETa in autumn can be explained by a negative trend of relative humidity. Abstract: This paper analyzes runoff and soil loss in relation to the rainfall regimes and land use changes in a small mountainous watershed in the Three Gorges Area (TGA) of China. Based on 10years of rainfall measurements and K-means clustering, 152 rainfall events were classified into three rainfall regimes. The mean statistical features of different rainfall regimes display a marked difference. Rainfall Regime I is events of medium amounts (31.8mm) and medium duration (1371min). Rainfall Regime II is events with high amounts (54.0mm), long duration (2548min), and an infrequent occurrence. Rainfall Regime III is events of low amount (22.2mm), short duration (494min) and high frequency. Each rainfall regime results in differing levels of runoff and erosion and Rainfall Regime I causes the greatest proportion of accumulated discharge (368.7mm) and soil loss (4283t). In the different rainfall regimes, the values of the mean runoff coefficient and the mean sediment load were ordered as follows: Rainfall Regime II>Rainfall Regime I>Rainfall Regime III. These results suggest that greater attention should be paid to Rainfall Regimes I and II because they had the most erosive effect. In the Wangjiaqiao watershed, the changes in land use primarily affected the paddy fields, where the cropland decreased significantly and the forest and orchards increased by 9.9% and 7.7%, respectively, during 1995–2004. The ANOVA shows land use changes caused significant decreasing trends in the runoff coefficients (P<0.01) and sediment loads (P<0.01). In order, the most sensitive response of runoff and erosion to land use was Rainfall Regime II>Rainfall Regime>Rainfall Regime III. Rainfall characteristics are decisive for the relative importance of different storm runoff generation mechanisms. Abstract: Background: As cardiovascular diseases have become the leading cause of death in many countries including China, nurses are increasingly required to be abreast of technological advances and the skills necessary to manage this increasing health care problem. Chinese nurses are under pressure to provide skilled electrocardiography monitoring, and be sufficiently skilled to detect myocardial ischemia and infarction, in this large patient population. This presents a challenge for the nursing profession in China, particularly for nurses working in coronary care in a country where advancement has been so rapid, yet little research has been conducted or reported in the literature. Objectives: The two main objectives were: to explore the demographic and educational factors that affect the use of ST-segment monitoring and correct electrode placement by CCU/ICU nurses in China; and to explore the factors both individual and institutional that affect monitoring and lead placement. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to nurses in 126 randomly selected tertiary hospitals, which were stratified into three homogeneous regions across China. The instrument examined demographics, information about hospitals, electrocardiogram devices, current practice patterns and perceptions toward monitoring and lead placement. Data from 734 nurses and 59 nurse managers from 59 hospitals were analyzed using t-tests, ANOVA, Chi-square test and logistic regression. Results: Electrocardiogram monitoring was used to detect myocardial ischemia by 43.7% of respondents, and 35.1% selected leads according to electrocardiogram or angiography findings. Most (70%) agreed that monitoring for acute coronary syndrome was important, while 39.2% did so, and 15.7% were able to identify correct placement. Logistic regression revealed a significant relationship between the uses of ST-segment monitoring and number of hospital beds, continuing education and a belief in its use and ease of use. Correct electrode placement was significantly correlated with respondents from university hospitals, hospitals with more acute coronary syndrome admissions and more independent thinking nurses. Conclusions: Despite best practice evidence, less than half of the sample used electrocardiogram monitoring to detect myocardial ischemia and the majority could not identify correct electrode placement, while ST-segment monitoring was not used routinely. This paper highlights the need for improvements in education both in universities and hospitals and discussion addresses conventions in units, which inhibit development of nurses’ skills. Abstract: This article studied slope scaling effects in six study areas in China. The areas had different terrain characteristics and were examples of distinct regions that are regarded in China as a distinct form of modeling and assessment of erosion and hydrology. The resolutions used in this paper including 10, 25, 50 and 100m. Mean slope, standard deviation of slope and slope distribution were calculated as basic slope statistics in the six study areas at four resolutions to generate information on change with resolution and rate of change with resolution. A theoretical slope distribution model was developed and used to model the basic statistics to help to understand the changes with resolution. Geostatistical methods were also used to help to understand the nature of the changes. The results showed that: (1) The change and rate of change of slope statistics with resolution differed between the study areas; (2) a simple driving parameter in the theoretical model (sig_g) was useful in studying the changes of slope basic statistics with resolution since direct relationships exist between it and the other slope statistics; (3) the geostatistical analysis showed how the way terrain structure changed with resolution corresponded to the correlation distance of slope surface increasing and the total variance decreasing as resolution became coarser and (4) the change and rate of change of slope basic statistics were found to be related to the changing rate of range (or correlation length) for detailed structures (R_origin). This suggested that the change and rate of change of slope with resolution were decided by the amount of higher spatial frequency information (small valleys, gullies and hills) at which scale would be smoothed by the given resolution changing process and that rate of change analysis provided a useful way to analyze the composition of multi-resolution structures. Abstract: Energy is one of the most basic materials of the national economy, which plays an important role in national productin and life. The relationship between energy consumption and economic growth has been a fascinating question since energy crisis in 70s of last century. This paper analyzes the relationship between energy consumption and economic development based on the VAR model using temporal series of China from 1990 to 2009, then uses impulse response function and variance decomposition to portray the correlations between economic growth and energy consumption. The result shows that there exists a unidirectional causality from energy consumption to gross domestic product and energy consumption can observably promote the development of economy. Abstract: The use of geostatistics to explore the spatial distribution and variability of soil properties has become an important tool to recognize soil properties. In this paper, we combined actual field sampling data with geostatistics to study the characteristic and spatial variability of soil organic matter and organic carbon content around Qinghai Lake. The results showed that the mean content of soil organic carbon is 5.95±3.40%, and organic matter is 3.45±1.97%, both are low. The variogram model of semi-variance function graph showed the models of soil organic carbon and matter are the exponential model. Isotropic ratio of nugget to sill of soil organic carbon and organic matter are 82.9% and 83%, both variable range are 9300m, all are in the range, here exists a correlation between organic carbon and organic matter content in the space. Fractal dimension can exhibit the higher spatial heterogeneity of soil organic carbon and organic matter content around Qinghai Lake. Anisotropy semi-variance analysis reveals that there does not exist any anisotropy structural characteristics of soil organic carbon and organic matter content in different directions in the study area; but there is spatial variability in the east - west as for organic matter content, while variability is very small in the other directions. Abstract: In this paper, we analyzed population genetic diversity of Scylla paramamosain in Hainan Island of China based on COI gene sequence. Totally 92 individuals were collected from six localities: Haikou, Wenchang, Wanning, Sanya, Dongfang and Danzhou. A 761 bp fragment was sequenced, defining 32 different haplotypes. H4 was the most frequent haplotype, existing in all six localities, while the majority of haplotypes were rare ones, existing in only one or two individuals. Haplotype diversity (h) and nucleotide diversity (π) ranged from 0.625 to 0.914 and from 0.001 to 0.003, with an average of 0.841 and 0.002, respectively. Genetic distance ranged from 0.001 to 0.003 within localities and from 0.002 to 0.003 between localities. The AMOVA analysis indicated a low level of genetic differentiation among six localities (F ST = 0.0176, P > 0.05). Neutrality tests and mismatch analysis implied a potential population expansion event for this crab species. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Objectives: This paper describes the training approach used with primary care staff to deliver an evidence-based computer-assisted cognitive–behavioral therapy (CBT) program for anxiety disorders within a collaborative care treatment delivery model. Methods: We describe the training and proficiency evaluation procedures utilized in the Coordinated Anxiety Learning and Management (CALM) study, a large multisite study of collaborative care for anxiety disorders in primary care. Training incorporated readings, didactic presentations, video demonstrations of CBT skills, role-plays, computer-assisted practice, CBT training cases and ongoing group supervision provided by study psychologists. Results: Proficiency training case data from 15 clinicians are presented. The anxiety clinical specialists (ACSs) were highly proficient at delivering the CBT component of the CALM intervention. The ACSs also provided Likert-scale ratings and open-ended responses about their experiences with the training. Overall, the training was rated very positively and was described as very thorough, indicating a high level of acceptability to clinicians. Recommendations for future training are described. Conclusions: Primary care staff with none or minimal prior CBT experience can be trained to deliver a computer-assisted, evidence-based treatment for anxiety disorders. The implications for dissemination and transportability of evidenced-based interventions are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Swertia chirayita, a medicinal herb endemic to the Tibetan region, is used as a special remedy for liver disorders. The hepatoprotective activity of its plant extracts has been associated with its antioxidant activity. This paper aims to investigate the in vitro and in vivo antioxidant effects of Swertia chirayita extracts (SCE). Materials and methods: Antioxidant ability of Swertia chirayita was investigated by employing several established in vitro methods. In vivo antioxidant activity was tested against CCl4-induced toxicity in mice. The levels and activities of malondialdehyde (MDA) and antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH), were then assayed using standard procedures. Results: SCE exhibited strong antioxidant ability in vitro. The liver and kidney of CCl4-intoxicated animals exhibited a significant (p <0.001) decrease in SOD, CAT, and GSH levels. Additionally, these organs exhibited a significant (p <0.001) increase in MDA level. CCl4 did not exhibit toxicity on mice treated with SCE and Vitamin E. The effects of Swertia chirayita (three dosages) were comparable to those of Vitamin E, except in MDA level in the liver and GSH level in the kidney (p <0.05). Conclusion: This study suggests that the ethanolic extract of Swertia chirayita possesses in vitro and in vivo antioxidant effects. Abstract: Phlomis umbrosa Turcz has been used as the traditional medicine for thousands of years in China. In this paper, the acetic acid-induced writhing test, the hot plate test, the carrageenan-induced paw edema test, the xylene-induced ear swelling test, and the acetic acid-induced Evans blue leakage and leukocyte infiltration test were used to investigate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities of the aqueous extract of this plant (25, 50 and 100mg/kg i.p.). Good dose-dependent effects were obtained in most of these tests, except in the hot plate test and the acetic acid-induced Evans blue leakage test. TLC and HPLC analyses showed iridoid glucosides were the main compositions of this extract. These findings suggested that the aqueous extract of P. umbrosa has significant antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Ethnopharmacological relevance: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used in clinical practice for several thousand years. TCM has played an indispensable role in the prevention and treatment of diseases, especially the complicated and chronic ones. Pharmacokinetic study on active constituents in herbal preparations is a good way for us to explain and predict a variety of events related to the efficacy and toxicity of TCM. Aim of the study: A selective and sensitive HPLC–MS/MS method was first developed and validated for the determination of luteolin, kaempferol, apigenin, quercetol, and isorhamnetin in rat plasma. Materials and methods: The LC system consisted of an Agilent Technologies Series 1200 system (Agilent, USA) equipped with an automatic degasser, a quaternary pump, and an autosampler. Chromatographic separations were performed on a Waters SunFire™ C18 column (150mm×4.6mm, 5μm), and the column temperature was maintained at 25°C and the sample injection volume was 20μL. The current LC–MS/MS assay was validated for linearity, intra-day and inter-day precisions, accuracy, extraction recovery and stability. Results: The validated method was successfully applied to monitoring the concentrations and pharmacokinetic studies of five flavone compounds in rat plasma after a single oral administration of Verbena officinalis L. extract with a dosage of 8.0mL/kg. The time to reach the maximum plasma concentration (T max1) was 0.48±2.14h for luteolin, 0.25±0.13h for kaempferol, 0.97±1.08h for apigenin, 1.04±4.25h for quercetol and 0.25±0.16h for isorhamnetin, and the maximum plasma concentration (T max2) was 3.97±1.48h, 4.05±0.46h, 4.33±0.58h, 2.99±0.48h and 4.02±0.34h. The elimination half-time (t 1/2) of luteolin, kaempferol, apigenin, quercetol and isorhamnetin was 4.02±0.81, 7.65±0.71, 3.30±0.83, 4.55±0.49 and 5.56±1.32h, respectively. Conclusions: This paper described a simple, sensitive and validated LC–MS/MS method for simultaneous determination of luteolin, kaempferol, apigenin, quercetol and isorhamnetin in rat plasma after oral administration of V. officinalis L. extract, and investigated on their pharmacokinetic studies as well, with a short run time of 5min. Abstract: In this paper, microdialysis combined with ultra performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS) was applied for the determination of ligustilide in freely moving rats'' brain. The extracellular unbound ligustilide could be detected in rat brain within the first time interval (0–20min) after nasal administration but not after oral administration. This result showed that ligustilide could quickly enter the brain after nasal administration; which implied that ligustilide may have a rapid onset of action. This work demonstrated the potential application of microdialysis combined with UPLC-MS in pharmacokinetic studies. Furthermore, the advantage that fewer animals used in the microdialysis experiment was confirmed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Aim of the study: Lizhong Pill, composed of Radix Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), Rhizoma Zingiberis (Zingiber officinale Roscoe), Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae (Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz.) and Radix Glycytthizae (Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch.), is a classical herbal product for curing spleen deficiency in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), and reserpine treated rats show similar signs to TCM spleen deficiency pattern. This paper is aimed to explore the regulatory effect on neuroendocrinoimmune network by Lizhong Pill in reserpine induced TCM spleen deficiency rats. Materials and methods: 100 healthy adult male SD rats, with a mean weight of 200g, were randomly divided into five groups in average: control group, reserpine treated group, atropine treated group, treatment groups with Lizhong Pill at high dose and low dose (equal to the dosage of crude drugs for 4g/kg/d and 8g/kg/d). Rats in reserpine treated group were induced by intraperitoneal injection of reserpine at 0.5mg/kgd for 4 weeks. The levels of IL-1, IL-6 and gastrin were measured with radioimmunoassay, TNF-α and IFN-γ in serum were measured with ELISA, the level of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) and substance P (SP) in small intestine were determined with radioimmunoassay, and the TNF-α and TGF-β positive cells in small intestine were detected by immunohistological staining. Data were analyzed with SAS 9.1 software package. Results: The rats in reserpine treated group, body weight, concentrations of IFN-γ, IL-1 and TNF-α in serum, expression of TGF-β in small intestine, VIP in small intestine decreased (P <0.05), and the level of IL-6 in serum, expression of TNF-α, SP in small intestine and gastrin were increased (P <0.05). Administration of Lizhong Pill at high dose could increase the body weights at day 21, and the weights of rats in Lizhong Pill groups were much higher compared to reserpine treated group. At high dose of Lizhong Pill could increase the level of TNF-α in serum. Lizhong Pill at high dose and low dose could reverse the changes of IL-1, IL-6 and IFN-γ, gastrin, expression of TGF-β and TNF-α, VIP and SP in small intestine. Conclusions: The rats treated with reserpine, with similar signs to TCM spleen deficiency, show neuroendocrinoimmune disorders, and the restoration of the neuroendocrinoimmune disorders might be the part of mechanism of Lizhong Pill for reinforcing TCM spleen deficiency. Abstract: Tripterygium Glycosides (TG) is effective in the treatment of patients with a variety of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in clinical. Wilforlide A (T1) serves as a quality control standard of TG that be listed in Drug Standard of Ministry of Public Health of the People''s Republic of China. The pharmacologic actions of T1 remain to be unidentified. In this paper, we studied the anti-inflammatory and immune suppressive effect of T1, and compared it with Triptolide (TP), which believed to be the major active component of TG. Carrageenan-induced rat pedal swelling, tampon-induced rat granulation, and mice ear inhibition rate of swelling trail results show that high-dose T1 has obvious anti-inflammatory effect. Colorimetric detection contents of hemolysin, carbon elimination from plasma of mice, mice delayed hypersensitivity immune, and organ index were measured. The results show that T1 has no significant immune suppressive activity, and there has a significant difference with TP and TG. Therefore, we think the content of TP also should be controlled as a supplement standard in order to ensure safe and effective medication. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Aim of the study: Based on the authors’ collection of specimens used as Jie-Ji in local Tibetan areas, China, and taxonomic determination, this paper aims to give a list of medicinal plants as Jie-Ji, formally identify the ones recognized as Jie-Ji Ga-Bao or Jie-Ji Na-Bao and to offer basic data for further studies on these Tibetan herbs. Materials and methods: Local herbalists were visited in Tibetan areas, China to observe which plants were being used as Jie-Ji. Samples of the indigenous plants were collected at the same time. Also, the medicinal plants as Jie-Ji were taxonomically identified. Results: A list of medicinal plants including 10 species of Jie-Ji in local Tibetan areas is given, including their morphological pictures used for identification. Conclusions: The origin of Jie-Ji is from 10 species of the Section Cruciata, Genus Gentiana (Gentianaceae). five species with dark blue flowers are used as Jie-Ji Na-Bao, the other five with white flowers are used as Jie-Ji Ga-Bao. Also, Gentiana macrophylla Pall. with dark blue flowers in the Section Cruciata, Genus Gentiana is not the original plant of Jie-Ji Na-Bao. The species endemic to the province are used as the original plants of Jie-Ji only in local Tibetan area of the province. Finally, the drug use of Jie-Ji in Traditional Tibetan Medicine is reasonable and it is efficacious. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Uncaria species (Gouteng in Chinese) have been used as ethnopharmacological medicines to treat ailments of the cardiovascular and central nervous systems. As the main alkaloid constituent of Uncaria species, rhynchophylline has drawn extensive attention in recent years for its antihypertensive and neuroprotective activities, and its pharmacological effects are related to ethnopharmacological medicine properties of Uncaria species. Aim of the review: This review examined the pharmacological studies and mechanisms of rhynchophylline, with an emphasis on cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases linked to the ethnopharmacological uses of Uncaria species. Methods: We conducted both an electronic search and a library search of in vivo and in vitro studies. The terms and keywords for the search included rhynchophylline, Uncaria species, Gouteng, pharmacological effects, and mechanism. We focused on the papers, including ours, with studies on all related pharmacological effects and mechanisms of rhynchophylline. Results: Rhynchophylline was the main constituent of several components identified from Uncaria species. Rhynchophylline mainly acts on cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases, including hypertension, bradycardia, arrhythmia, sedation, vascular dementia, epileptic seizures, drug addiction, and cerebral ischemia. Rhynchophylline also has effects on anticoagulation, inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, and has been shown to be anti-endotoxemic. The active mechanisms are related to modulation of calcium and potassium ion channels, protection of neural and neuroglial cells, and regulation of central neurotransmitter transport and metabolism. More studies are necessary to verify the pharmacological activities and determine the exact mechanisms of rhynchophylline activity. Conclusions: Rhynchophylline treatment of cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases has a strong linkage with traditional concepts and uses of Uncaria species in ethnopharmacological medicine, such as treatment for lightheadedness, convulsions, numbness, and hypertension. As a candidate drug for several cardiovascular and central nervous system diseases, rhynchophylline will attract scientists to pursue the potential pharmacological effects and mechanisms with new technologies. Relatively few clinically relevant studies of rhynchophylline have been conducted. This paper investigated the ability of Mandarin-speaking children with high-functioning autism (HFA) to recognize the four categories of emotional prosody, namely, happiness , anger , sadness and fear , in moderate- and high-intensity emotional conditions using auditory discrimination tasks. Thirty-four children with HFA between 5 and 7 years of age and 34 typically developing (TD) controls participated in this study. In moderate-intensity conditions, children with HFA scored lower than TD children in the recognition of the four categories of emotional prosody, indicating an overall impairment. With an increase in the intensity of emotion, children with HFA showed improved accuracy for anger, decreased accuracy for happiness, but no change in accuracy for either sadness or fear. An analysis of error patterns demonstrated that unlike TD children, children with HFA were inclined to mistake happiness for anger, with the two categories differing in valence, and this inclination deepened as the intensity increased. In discriminating between sadness and fear, which have a slight arousal difference, both groups showed difficulty in moderate-intensity conditions. In high-intensity conditions, TD children were inclined to perceive stimuli as exhibiting fear, which demonstrates comparatively high arousal; thus, they were more accurate for fear, while HFA children were not sensitive to increases in arousal, showing no noticeable effect. These findings indicated that children with HFA have a mechanism distinct from that of TD children in emotional prosody recognition, exhibiting various degrees of impairment in this regard. • Adopted Chinese youth scored more favorably on BASC-3 than non-adopted Chinese youth. • Adopted Chinese youth scored more favorably on BASC-3 than non-adopted US youth. • High adoptive family SES benefited adopted youth adjustment. • Testing measurement invariance is important for cross-cultural comparison. In this paper, we examined if high SES families had an effect on youth's adjustment by comparing 226 internationally adopted female Chinese youth who experienced pre-adoption institutionalization with 1059 non-adopted Chinese peers living in China, as well as 209 non-adopted American peers. On average, the adopted youth's families had a higher SES status than the two comparison groups. Survey data on behavioral problems and prosocial adjustment were collected with the third edition of the Behavioral Assessment for Children (BASC-3). We found the adopted Chinese youth outperformed their Chinese counterparts in all comparisons and their US counterparts in most comparisons. These results offer some evidence that a high family SES may compensate for the adoption-related risks such as earlier institutionalization. Newly graduated nurses have comparatively high levels of occupational stress. Previous studies have evaluated stress across this population as a whole; however, little is known about potentially different occupational stress responses among new nurses and the impact of demographic and work-related characteristics on occupational stress responses. To determine differences in occupational stress levels of newly graduated nurses at different time points during the first 3 years of practice; to identify potential subgroups of nurses who perceive different occupational stress levels over time; and to evaluate differences in identified subgroups based on demographic and work-related characteristics. An observational longitudinal study. Four tertiary hospitals in Shanghai were selected randomly using a computer-generated random number table. All 343 newly graduated nurses employed in the selected hospitals were invited to participate. The inclusion criteria were (1) newly graduated without nursing experience, excluding nursing internship; (2) current employment in in-patient departments/ICU/operation room; and (3) consented to participate. A total of 152 participants met criteria and completed all four points of data collection. Participants completed an annual paper survey. Occupational stress levels were measured using the Job Stress Scale for Newly Graduated Nurses. Occupational stress scores at different time points were compared using latent growth modeling. Group-based trajectory modeling was performed to identify subgroups of occupational stress trajectory. ANOVA and Fisher's exact test were conducted to examine the differences of demographic characteristics between classes. The entire sample of newly graduated nurses experienced a significant decrease in occupational stress during the first three years. The best-fitting group-based trajectory model described three distinctive trajectories: low occupational stress (19.1% of sample); medium occupational stress (67.1%) and high occupational stress (13.8%). The low occupational stress subgroup had a higher proportion of nurses from Shanghai, and the majority were employed as contact- based nurses. In comparison, the high occupational stress subgroup had the largest proportion of nurses from other provinces (outside of Shanghai), almost half of participants were employed as "bianzhi" nurses, and the majority reported to be assigned preceptor by shift. Newly graduated nurses perceived occupational stress differently over time. Identified subgroups with different demographic characteristics have significantly different perceptions of occupational stress over the first three years of practice and future intervention programs such as peer-support programs or a standardized preceptorship should be tailored to meet the unique needs of these different subgroups.
