Renewable energy is regarded as an effective method to alleviate environmental pollution and accelerate the green transition in China. This paper systematically investigates the impact of financial inclusion on renewable energy demand by using S-GMM model based on provincial data in the green finance era. This paper also analyzes the asymmetry, heterogeneity, and mediating mechanism in the nexus between financial inclusion and renewable energy demand, and highlights the following findings: (1) Improved financial inclusion can promote renewable energy development in China and present the characteristics of green finance; (2) the impact of financial inclusion on renewable energy demand is asymmetric and heterogeneous; specifically, this impact is much higher in northern China and the regions with higher renewable energy development; and (3) wind and photovoltaic power generation are effective mediators between financial inclusion and renewable energy industry, while the mediation effects of hydropower and nuclear power are not significant. New evidence in this study is presented for the achievement of green transition in China, as well as practical policy implications for improving financial inclusion and increasing renewable energy consumption. • The informal sector can play a role in sustainable development. • Competition from the informal sector can significantly improve the energy efficiency of formal firms, and this result is robust. • Instrumental variable and property score matching method are used to address possible endogeneity issues. • Innovation has a significant mediating effect. Based on micro-evidence, this paper investigates the role of the informal sector in sustainable development. In particular, this paper examines the impact of competition from the informal sector on the energy intensity of firms based on Chinese manufacturing enterprise data. The results indicate that firms reduce their energy intensity in the face of fiercer competition from the informal sector. Competition from the informal sector has a more obvious effect on reducing energy intensity especially for firms with higher energy intensity. The subsample regression results imply prominent regional and enterprise ownership heterogeneity. The mechanism test indicates that competition from the informal sector reduces firm energy intensity by promoting the product innovation, production cost innovation, R&D (Research and Development) activities of formal firms. However, there is no evidence of a crowding-out effect, that is, competition from the informal sector has not been found to squeeze out firms' output and reduce energy intensity. The essence of industrial chain structure optimization is to strengthen the synergy and division ability among sectors. It is a crucial factor in reducing energy intensity and achieving carbon neutrality goals. This paper completed the China's non-competitive input-output table from 2000 to 2020, constructed industrial synergy and division index using structural path analysis method and examined its development trend. Combining with a two-way fixed effects model, we explored the influence of industrial synergy and division on energy intensity. The research found that China's industrial synergy and division development level shows an upward trend. The proportion of the low-layer industrial chain decreases, and the peak contribution rate moves to the high-layer industrial chain. Secondly, industrial synergy and division significantly reduces sectoral energy intensity, the results are robust after endogeneity test. Finally, heterogeneity analysis showed that industrial synergy and division can reduce the energy consumption intensity of all sectors, and it is more obvious for sectors with high energy dependence. This research can provide targeted policy suggestions for China to optimize its industrial structure. China's rural solar photovoltaic projects (SPVPs), as an innovative initiative to improve livelihoods through clean energy, have played a positive role in poverty reduction. However, whether this measure can enhance energy services for rural families remains unconfirmed. This paper employs a quasi-experimental method from the perspectives of energy service accessibility and affordability to quantify the net contribution of China's rural SPVPs to enhancing family energy services. The results indicate: (1) SPVPs can significantly improve family energy services, with a net effect of 14.7 % on the energy service accessibility and a net effect of 44.5 % on the energy service affordability. (2) SPVPs can increase the energy consumption capacity, energy supply capacity and energy equipment utilization rate by 2.6 %, 7.1 % and 5 %, respectively. Furthermore, these initiatives can effectively slash the energy costs of rural families by 4.3 %, bolster the energy access affordability by 3.9 %, and catapult energy investments by an impressive 44.9 %. (3) These projects also perform well in the family energy consumption cleanliness. (4) The effect of SPVPs in providing energy services presents a regional difference, with the best performance observed in 'Type III' solar resource areas. With the growing share of the climate-sensitive renewable energy market supply in China, estimating future energy drought risk (ED) is essential. In this paper, based on CMIP6, energy demand and power generation are estimated from 2023 to 2100 under SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 climate scenarios, and ED is defined from high demand (HD), low wind-solar generation (LWS), and residual load (RL). The results show that the ED exacerbation is relatively high under the SSP5-8.5. Between 2023 and 2100, the duration and severity of HD and RL notably increase, while LWS changes are relatively weak. We find that HD and RL exhibit high summer risks in the south and high winter risk in the north. The return periods vary significantly and extends over time in most regions. Moreover, there are few ED when the installed power generation capacity (IPGC) is increased. When the IPGC increases by 2%–5%, the LWS will decrease at least 20%–72%. With a 10% increase, the LWS will be mitigated by at least 80%, whereas the mitigation for RL is limited, approximately 3–17% at different rates. The five major power generation corporations dominate the power industry in China, and play vital roles in China's carbon trading scheme. Under this circumstance, this paper studies the allocation of carbon emission quotas to China's five major power generation corporations based on the fairness and efficiency principles, which proves the primary prerequisite for setting up the national carbon market. Specifically, a bi-level programming model is developed to optimally allocate carbon emission quotas to the corporations, and then a zero sum gains data envelopment analysis (ZSG-DEA) model is adopted to evaluate the efficiency of the allocation so as to adjust towards the optimal solution. The results indicate that power generation has significantly positive influence on the allocation of carbon emission quotas. Moreover, the difference between the sum of optimal carbon emissions and the sum of carbon quotas allocated is 1.431 billion tons, which implies that the emission reduction potential of the five major power generation corporations is tremendous. This paper constructs a two-stage undesirable and desirable congestion model, which distinguishes purely technical inefficiency from congestion, to study the energy congestion of 30 transportation sectors in China from 2011 to 2020. The Heckman model is used to analyze the influence mechanism of various factors on the undesirable congestion of energy, which avoids sample selection bias. The results show that: (1) The undesirable congestion of energy mainly exists in the transport sector of the western region, while the desirable congestion of energy only exists in the transport sectors of the eastern and central regions. (2) Purely technical inefficiency in the transportation sector does not usually occur in isolation. When talking about energy conservation, "Rebound Effect" (RE) is always concerned, which defined as the increasing energy consumption relative to the counterfactual predicted by technological progress because of efficiency induced decrease in the real price of energy services. In this paper, we try to find a way to figure out the RE through calculating the substitution relations accord with the definition. Based on the trans-log cost function and considering the asymmetric impact on energy-cost share equation, the paper applies Allen-Uzawa substitution elasticity to establish the price-oriented analysis diagram of fossil-energy consumption RE. Using time series data, applying the joint method of the dynamic OLS (DOLS) and the seemingly unrelated regressions (SUR), the RE in China's electricity generation sector is estimated. The results showed that the RE is 11.6% in China's electricity generation sector if allowing for asymmetric price effects, which indicates that China's power generation sector generally displays a feature of energy saving. Recognizing the industrial sector's high energy use and vast potential for energy saving, many national governments have established voluntary or negotiated agreements that set quantitative energy-saving targets for individual industrial enterprises. The most commonly used energy-saving targets worldwide are volume and energy intensity targets. Since 2006, the Chinese government has set mandatory, enterprise-level energy-saving targets in terms of the “amount of energy saved”; this represents a unique category that differs from both volume and energy intensity targets. Based on first-hand data collected at ten case enterprises, this paper represents one of the first attempts to verify the reliability of the amount of energy saved data reported by the Chinese government and to rigorously and systematically investigate the inherent weaknesses of the amount of energy saved targets through a comparison with the mainstream categories of energy-saving targets. The ten case enterprises reported four different types of amount of energy saved. While all of the case enterprises claimed full achievement of their amount of energy saved targets, four enterprises exaggerated their performance by violating the National Standard for Calculating the Amount of Energy Saved of Enterprises. The paper thus hypothesizes that the National Top-1000 Enterprise Program's alleged achievement of performance 65% higher relative to its amount of energy saved target is likely an overestimation. Although amount of energy saved targets constitute an innovative energy-saving indicator, they do not represent a step forward from conventional volume and intensity targets because of the following four weaknesses: 1) amount of energy saved targets provide limited potential for comparison given the different types of amount of energy saved and the different calculation methods, 2) they generate uncertain environmental outcomes as it is possible to meet a portion of an amount of energy saved target through production volume expansion, 3) they are difficult to enforce due to the complexity of data verification on the part of local government agencies, and 4) they are poorly correlated with the national target for reducing energy intensity. China's economy has developed rapidly relying on a large amount of production factors input. It has caused excessive consumption of fossil energy which led to a series of social problems. Although Chinese government adopted various measures to reduce energy use, the existence of the energy rebound effect affects the results of energy saving. Therefore, it is necessary to study and carry out the energy rebound effect of various industries in China. This paper works out ten hybrid energy input-output tables (value type) based on the ten input-output tables and energy consumption of the sub-sector from 1987 to 2012. Relying on the supply-driven Ghosh input-output model, this paper calculates the energy rebound effect of industries from 1987 to 2012 in China, and then analyzes the factors which may affect the energy rebound effect value. This study aims to elucidate the profound implications of industrial transformation and upgrading in mitigating dependence on fossil fuels, which holds paramount significance in shaping energy transition strategies—an aspect that is currently missing in existing studies. Leveraging data spanning from 2000 to 2020, encompassing fossil energy consumption and economic development, this paper developed a second-order classification model as a new measure of energy elasticity. Comparing regional variations in fossil energy resilience, an in-depth analysis was conducted on four representative provinces to understand the evolution of their fossil energy consumption structures over time. Correlation analysis was employed to reveal the impact of industrial structures on the reduction of fossil energy dependence. The results indicate distinct spatial variations in the energy transition effect, with the southwest inland region retaining a pronounced reliance on fossil energy sources. However, approximately 80% of the provinces have made substantial progress in reducing fossil energy dependence from 2000 to 2020. Notably, the financial sector and the accommodation and catering industry contribute positively to mitigating fossil energy dependence, while the industrial sector exhibits the opposite effect. Urban agglomeration planning attributes the uneven regional energy transition to the delineation of urban industrial functions. Suggestions for narrowing the energy transition gap include measuring the sustainability of the industrial chain from a life-cycle perspective, avoiding the singular functional division of cities, and developing systematic policies. In the catering industry, adopting alternative cooking energy and implementing the conversion and recycling of catering waste can help prevent risks. This study underscores the positive role of the accommodation and catering industry in the energy transition, along with its potential risks. In the global context of intensive energy resource consumption and substantial greenhouse gas emissions, as the energy sector with the highest share of carbon emissions, the power generation industry is destined to play a central role in China's efforts to promote energy conservation and emission reduction. With the emergence of local carbon pilot projects and the implementation of a national carbon market, key emission units in the power industry, in addition to the electricity market business, also need to fulfill and pay carbon emission rights on schedule. The power generation rights are a market-based mechanism for clean energy units to replace conventional energy units in electricity generation, which can promote carbon emission reduction by incorporating the actual carbon emissions from conventional energy units. This paper establishes an optimized social welfare model that incorporates the interdependency between the thermal power generation unit market and the electric carbon market. It is based on the social welfare model of power generation rights and the initial allocation of carbon emission rights for the units, while considering the cost increase of excess emission under monthly forecasted power generation by the thermal power units. Integrated energy system is an important approach to promote large-scale utilization of renewable energy. Under the context of energy market reformation and technology advancement, the economic operation of integrated energy system confronts new challenges, in terms of multiple uncertainties, multi-timescale characteristics of heterogeneous energy, and coordinated operation of hybrid energy storage system. To this end, this paper investigates the multi-timescale rolling optimization of integrated energy system with hybrid energy storage system considering the above challenges. Firstly, a basic framework of an integrated energy system with hybrid energy storage system (consisting of battery and hydrogen storage) is proposed, and the typical devices are modeled in detail. Secondly, the parameters and variables are divided into fast/slow timescale according to dispatch needs, and the multi-timescale problem of heterogeneous energy and the coordinated operation of the hybrid energy storage system can be solved simultaneously through two-stage optimization. Thirdly, the dispatch model is incorporated into the framework of model predictive control, the uncertainty of price, renewable energy and load can be effectively handled. Finally, a case study is conducted using an industrial park in the southern coastal region of China, the comparison with the rule-based method shows 60.65% reduction in the operating cost of hybrid energy storage system, the comparison with robust optimization shows 7.01% reduction in the total cost of the system, thus the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified. • The application of HESS in IES is considered and modeled in a more detailed way. • Based on the two-stage approach, the heterogeneous energy multi-timescale scheduling problem and the HESS coordinated operation problem of IES can be solved simultaneously. • The dispatch model is incorporated into MPC for rolling optimization, and multiple uncertainties are effectively handled. • Using an industrial park in the southern coastal region of China as case study, the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified. Improving the deployment and penetration of renewable energy is considered to be the fundamental way to solve environmental problems, but whether higher penetration of renewable energy means higher energy efficiency remains to be empirically tested. To reveal the relationship between cleanliness and efficiency in the energy sector, this paper first uses the three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA)method to measure the total factor energy efficiency (TFEE) of 30 provinces in China, and then applies static and dynamic panel threshold regression (PTR)models to estimate the nonlinear effect of renewable energy share on TFEE. The results show that renewable energy is usually beneficial for improving TFEE, but there are prominent heterogeneity and nonlinear characteristics in net electricity exporting and net electricity importing provinces. Renewable energy in low rather than high regimes can significantly improve energy efficiency, indicating that provinces with lower levels of economic development and energy consumption receive higher marginal energy efficiency and are more likely to achieve sustainable development goals. More renewable energy quotas should be given to economically developed and high energy consuming provinces, and comprehensive energy efficiency guarantees and improvement measures must be provided to achieve optimal emission mitigation. Emissions trading scheme (ETS) is one of the effective measures to realize energy conservation and emission reduction. In order to set up a nationwide carbon emissions trading mechanism, seven ETS pilots have been launched in China. Firstly, based on empirical investigation and research of seven pilots, this paper analyzed the market efficiency of ETS pilots from four aspects: carbon price, trading volume, market liquidity, and information transparency. The result showed that the market efficiency of ETS pilots is not satisfactory in spite of the fact that system designs of ETS have achieved preliminary result. Then, the reason for low market efficiency of ETS pilots was discussed from some factors such as institutional arrangements, market participants, the supply and demand, etc. Finally, this paper puts forward some policy suggestions to improve the market efficiency of China׳s carbon trading market. Listed energy companies play an important role in both the energy financial market and energy commodity market. As owners of listed energy companies, shareholders can influence the stability of the energy stock market by increasing or decreasing their holdings. To analyze the evolutionary features and stability of shareholders’ co-holding behavior, we constructed a derivative holding-based structural equivalence network of the shareholders (holding-based network) based on the primitive shareholding network of the listed companies and their shareholders. The main data used in this paper are the semi-annual reports from 2003 to 2012 that contain information about Chinese listed energy companies’ top 10 shareholders. The holding-based network takes the shareholders as nodes, whether holding the same listed energy companies’ stock at the same time as the edges, and the number of listed energy companies co-held as the weights. Due to the unique topological features of the holding-based network, we improved the Heuristic Algorithm to find the associated maximal connected sub-graph of the network, which is the main group of shareholders with shareholding consistency of the listed energy companies. China has surpassed the United States to be the world's largest energy consumer, but a lot of energy was used to produce products for exporting to other countries. Presently, China faces a great challenge in energy security and environmental protection. This paper focuses on the energy embodied in China's foreign trade with a multi-regional input–output approach. Three versions of the GTAP (Global Trade Analysis Project) database were used to capture the trend and distribution of the embodied energy flows for China during 2001–2007. The results indicate that the energy embodied in the global trade is increasing rapidly, growing faster than the total direct energy exported in the same period. China is shown as an energy exporter in terms of embodied energy, and the embodied energy trade surplus increased from 156 million tons of oil equivalents (Mtoe) in 2001 to 514 Mtoe in 2007, with a proportion of domestic energy consumption increased from 14% to 23%. This paper also studies the effects of the energy-intensive industry restrictive export policy of China, and we find that this policy could reduce the national energy consumption and promote industrial structure upgrades effectively. However, the expansion of energy-intensive industries in other countries may reduce China's efforts for global energy saving and global warming alleviation. China is vast, abundant and particularly plentiful in energy sources, due to which it has obtained remarkable achievements on economy. However, its energy structure is too simple to support the sustainable development of economy as coal still contributes to the majority of energy consumption in China. As a consequence, Renewable Energy Law was enacted in 2005, and Chinese government announced a series of policies to boom renewable energy industry. Subsidy policy is one of the major forms of these policies. This paper aims to present these subsidy policies and to analyze their effects according to relative data in energy industry 2005–2013, to find out the deficiencies and enlighten possible policy improvements. The original intentions and abstracts of 5 different levels of subsidy related policies are summarized, and the effects in reality are attentively analyzed. It can be concluded that subsidy policies have different short-term effect on different renewable energies, and they all show some negative effect to a certain extent. 6 core problems are summarized in this paper, and remedy strategies are suggested. This paper analyzes energy-related CO 2 emissions and production water use as the constrictions for energy development in northwestern China. By two period division methods such as one-year one-period and multi-year phased period, CO 2 emissions per unit of GDP and production water use are decomposed with a temporal decomposition technique. By compared with the average national level, carbon intensity and water intensity in 2016 are decomposed with a cross-regional decomposition technique. After a pairwise comparison of each influence factor between studied regions, what causes the variations in both intensity indicators among these five northwestern provinces is distinguished. Then the restrictions of energy development could be studied within an integrated framework of decomposing CO 2 emissions and water use in two dimensions such as time and space. Besides, the secondary industry is divided into non-energy industry and energy industry for the analysis of the effects of energy industry development. Moreover, renewable energy substitution factor is newly added to the decomposition of CO 2 emissions per unit of GDP, which is acted as an influence factor for the reduction of CO 2 emissions by the change of energy consumption structure. In recent years, water-side free cooling has been broadly applied in data centers to lessen the high cost of energy consumption. The energy-saving opportunities of free cooling have been recognized by numerous studies across the world. In this paper, the field test and energy performance evaluation were performed in an operational data center with water-side free cooling, located in Chongqing, China. Existing problems were found during tests, including the insufficient cooling capacity of towers in wintertime and the inability to activate partial-free cooling. The results of the tests show that the reduction in Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) is much lower than the expected. To understand the marked discrepancies, the performance of the cooling tower was discussed in terms of the approach temperature and actual cooling capacity. The maximum cooling capacity in winter is only about 50 % of the rated. With the consideration of the cooling tower configuration performance in different climate conditions, the conservative energy effects were calculated in 34 provincial cities of China. To prolong the hours available, optimized operation schemes of cooling towers are presented. The available hours for free cooling could be increased from 730 h to 1300 h when operating at 67 % of rated flow rate, resulting in a decrease in the energy saving of chillers between 8.44 % and 21.05 %. Abstract: Over the past century, fossil fuels have provided the majority of China's energy. However, their extensive utilization leads to a shortage and environmental pollution. Recently, submarine and permafrost gas hydrate deposits have been investigated as a possible clean and sustainable energy source by governmental institutions, research organizations, and energy industries in China. The primary objective of this paper is to review the potential studies pertaining to gas hydrate exploration and resource assessment, the safe and efficient exploitation of gas hydrates and the basic properties of gas hydrates. To date, there are over 20 institutions and organizations in China committed to gas hydrate investigation, among which the Guangzhou Marine Geological Survey (GMGS) and the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences (CAGS) etc. primarily focus on gas hydrate exploration research, while the China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) Research Center, Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC) and China University of Petroleum-Beijing (CUPB) etc. concentrate on gas hydrate mining technologies. In this paper, the occurrence and exploration of gas hydrates in both permafrost regions and the continental slope of China have been determined from numerous research contributions and are presented. Moreover, the latest progress in gas hydrate fundamental studies, including hydrate phase equilibria, hydrate formation mechanisms, hydrate thermal physical properties and the acoustics and resistivity characteristics of gas hydrates are briefly reviewed, and relevant data are gathered and compared. Emphasis is also placed on gas hydrate mining technologies and gas production using depressurization methods, thermal stimulation methods or other methods. Furthermore, the security of natural gas hydrate-bearing sediments during gas production and the environmental impacts of gas hydrate are identified. With additional financial and political support and advanced research facilities, research on gas hydrates in China is progressing rapidly but is still in its early developing stage, thus, future work should be undertaken with greater diligence. Abstract Theses on China's low-carbon economy focus on the driving forces of carbon emissions, energy–carbon efficiency, and the carbon–economy nexus. Meanwhile, comprehensive frameworks that assess China's green economy and also analyze its driving forces are lacking. This paper constructs a green productivity index based on the Global Malmquist–Luenberger productivity index to evaluate the development of the low-carbon economy in China. A panel vector auto-regression model is adopted to further analyze the endogenous interactions and dynamic relationships among aspects of the green economy and its influencing factors. Empirical results show that China has seen a balanced development of green economic growth in 2000–2016, achieved in a series of clear stages. To maintain the sustainable growth of the low-carbon economy in the future, China must rely more on technological progress. This research also makes some important discoveries that have not been found in previous studies: the impact of China's industrial structure and energy consumption structure on the green economy are short term, having a duration of impact of approximately four years. Finally, we provide an assessment of provincial green economy development and describe the corresponding policy implications. Abstract: This paper studies the implementation of a regulation problem of China in which the energy industry''s private information is unknown to the state-owned assets supervision and administration commission of the state council (SASAC). It''s reasonable to use a fuzzy variable to denote the subjective assessment of the SASAC to the private information. A principal-agent model is then set up to maximize the welfare of the SASAC. China consumes more energy and emits more carbon dioxide than any other country. The building sector accounts for nearly 1/3 of the total national energy consumption in China; thus, it is critical to find a solution for improving buildings’ energy efficiency. Under the market-oriented mechanism, constrained by the energy performance contracting (EPC) mode, energy service companies (ESCOs) play an important role in improving energy efficiency for high-energy-consumption industries, including the building sector. The aim of this study is to determine the strategy for boosting the building ESCO industry. By conducting a strength, weakness, opportunity, and threat (SWOT) analysis, this paper presented the status of the building ESCO industry in China and proposed alternative strategies. By utilizing a conventional multi-criteria decision-making method, namely, the Analytic Network Process (ANP), this study provides a quantitative basis to analytically determine the ranking of the factors in SWOT analysis and select the best strategy to promote the development of the building ESCO industry. The results showed that the ANP-SWOT is a viable and highly capable methodology that provides invaluable insights for strategic management decisions in the building ESCO industry, and a set of strategies for promoting ESCO development in the building sector were proposed based on this approach. Since the 21st century, the global population aging has been deepening, profoundly affecting regional socio-economy. To investigate the impact of demographic age structure on energy consumption structure, this paper explores the impact of population aging on energy consumption structure in mainland China by a multivariate panel regression model. The total energy consumption is increasing year by year in mainland China, with a fluctuating lower growth rate and obvious regional heterogeneity. The high-value total energy consumption zones are concentrated in China's eastern region, dominated by Shandong, etc. Meanwhile, energy consumption structure in mainland China has evolved with a decreasing share of coal consumption. Among them, the share of natural gas consumption is still at a low level, while which of petroleum consumption shows diversity. Population aging has a significant positive correlation with energy consumption structure at the national level, and a negative effect in the medium-value coal consumption zones at the provincial level. Additionally, GDP, the share of secondary industry and energy price are also important. As urbanization accelerates and an increasing number of people move from rural to urban areas, changes in household energy consumption have become a major symptom of typical human-land relationship activities in different regions, i.e., labour migration is affecting household energy consumption, especially household cooking energy. Based on household data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (1989–2015), this paper employs a panel multinomial logit model and mathematical statistics to reveal structural changes in urban and rural Chinese households cooking energy consumption and the driving factors of these changes over the past 30 years and provides suggestions for the structural upgrade of household cooking energy consumption. The research shows that household cooking energy consumption in China has undergone a substantial transition since the 1980s, displaying diverse trends in urban and rural households. The shift from coal to natural gas in urban areas and from solid fuels to electricity in rural areas was driven by a range of factors such as per capita disposable income, government policies, energy prices and availability. Among these, household income was found to be the most influential factor. Additionally, migration had a notable effect on household cooking energy consumption in rural areas. The reduction of solid fuel usage and the electrification of cooking are proven methods of lowering household energy emissions, as natural gas releases 60% less CO 2 compared to coal when producing the same amount of heat. The government must implement a focused strategy for the transition towards cleaner energy sources for household cooking, prioritizing rural areas by strengthening energy infrastructure and fostering the development of solar and wind energy. In urban areas, efforts should be directed towards enhancing income, stabilizing energy costs, and popularizing the use of natural gas. For the past three decades, the notion of sustainable cities has become central in planning and managing urban areas in the world and the large-scale city formation has been formed in big cities. As a result of economic growth and urban transformation, Shanghai, a major Chinese international metropolis, faces ongoing issues with resource waste and low energy utilization. Therefore, this paper aims to consider the availability of water for energy production from a consumption-based perspective and estimate the water footprint of the energy supply using a regional input-output analysis approach for Shanghai. As a result, we conclude that the water footprint of the energy supply of Shanghai is about 1.28 billion m 3 in 2007, with 46.1% of water used for electricity and heat supply. The total water withdrawal by the energy sector is about 2.35 billion m 3 and additional water withdrawal needed is about 35% of the total water withdrawals by the energy sector in Shanghai. Furthermore, an energy self-sufficiency scenario was developed, and the scenario analysis reveals that 55% more water would be required to ensure a self-sufficient energy sector. The objective of this study is to trace and quantify the sources of rebound effect for different energy sources in China. This paper decomposes the economy-wide rebound effect into 135 production sector-level rebound effects and five final demand components. The sector-level rebound is further decomposed into output effect and substitution effect. A two-stage decomposition method and a static computable general equilibrium model are developed to achieve this. Five types of energy-specific efficiency improvements are introduced, respectively, in all the production sectors. Results show that improving efficiency of using coal leads to the smallest macro-level rebound. For rebound decomposition, four findings are generalized. First, final consumption shows larger impact on the rebound of secondary energy sources than on primary energy sources. Second, production sectors that are big user of the efficiency-exposed energy source are expected to be key rebound contributor. Third, energy-producing sectors make negative rebound contribution. To achieve green development, ample environmental subsidies have been invested into many energy-intensive firms (such as thermal power firms) in China. Investigations of the effects of this kind of subsidy can help to provide specific and important implications for ongoing regulations. Unlike previous studies on the national, regional or sectoral level, this paper measures green efficiency and its compositions of thermal power firms and studies the impact of environmental subsidies on green efficiency by using the classical Slacks-based Measure and Tobit model. The results show that the average green efficiency ranges from 0.509 to 0.663 during 2010–2015, which is much lower than the general efficiency. The green scale efficiency is the main reason for the low green efficiency, thus indicating large room for improvement. Environmental subsidies negatively affect green efficiency and its decompositions from 2010 to 2013. The negative effect becomes weak and insignificant in 2014, and the environmental subsidies start to significantly promote green efficiency and its decompositions in 2015. According to our findings, some implications relating to improving green scale efficiency, increasing the intensity of environmental subsidies to firms and strengthening their supervision are proposed. The inter-provincial inequality of per capita CO 2 emissions in China's electricity sector means that their responsibilities for CO 2 emission reduction are different. Considering the spatial separation of CO 2 emissions in power production and consumption, with respect to the large scale inter-provincial electricity trade in China, this paper innovatively investigates the sub-national inequality and polarization degree of per capita CO 2 emissions in China's electric power sector from the perspectives of both production and consumption. The overall tendencies of the sub-national polarization degrees of per capita CO 2 emissions embodied in the both electric power consumption and production in China show an increasing trend. The results indicate that the polarization distribution of per capita CO 2 emissions is still one of the important factors leading to difficulties in achieving the new reduction arrangements. The evolution of the bi-polarization analysis shows that the grouping results of per capita CO 2 emissions are different from production and consumption perspectives, as well as the high- and low-emission groups have significantly different characteristics. The inequality and polarization degree of per capita CO 2 emissions in China's electric power sector have changed as the CO 2 emissions embodied in the electricity trade had been taken into account. Possession of motor vehicles in China has been rising fast, along with continuous economic growth, social development and improvements in living standards, causing severe energy and environmental stress. To relieve the stress, China is promoting electric vehicles as good alternatives to conventional vehicles. By 2020, the accumulated production and sales of electric vehicles are expected to reach five million. Large-scale connection of electric vehicles to the power grid would inevitably bring challenges to the power sector. In this paper, an electric vehicle and multi-region load-dispatch grid-structure-based (EVMLG) mathematical model is presented, aiming to investigate the interaction between electric vehicles and the power sector. Impacts of charging behaviors are carefully considered. Through case studies, we conclude that (1) the development of electric vehicles will influence regional generation portfolio and operation pattern of the power sector, and increase the utilization of renewables, (2) guided charging can adapt to the power sector, and lead to better economic and environmental benefits, (3) electric vehicles are suitable to be deployed in resource-rich regions, and (4) the development potential of electric vehicles in China is huge from the viewpoint of power supply capacity. Understanding the driving factors behind energy consumption changes provides insights about consumption patterns and can inform targeted energy saving polices. This paper applies a joint decomposition approach, introducing an index decomposition analysis (IDA) method into a production theoretical decomposition analysis (PDA). This integrated approach decomposed energy consumption changes into eight drivers. A subsequent empirical study of China resulted in three key findings. First, regardless of the geographic area considered, potential economic development was the largest factor driving energy consumption growth. Second, the technological change effects associated with economic development and energy savings both played significant roles in reducing energy consumption. Third, the efficiency change effects of energy use and economic development were generally unable to relieve the pressure of increases in energy consumption, especially in the eastern regions. Improvement of coal consumption efficiency is very important both for China in solving its problems of energy security and environmental pollution and for the world in addressing the issue of greenhouse gas emissions. Using a total-factor framework, this paper employs a data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach to evaluate the coal consumption efficiency of six energy intensive sub-industries in China in 2015. Coal consumption efficiency is factorized into economic efficiency and environmental efficiency, with sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and industrial smoke, dust and soot emissions treated as undesirable outputs of energy consumptions. The results show the following. (1) Of the six energy intensive sub-industries studied, two exhibit both DEA-effective coal economic efficiency and coal environmental efficiency. Coal economic efficiency is found to be greater than coal environmental efficiency, indicating that the benefits of economic efficiency have masked the negative effects of the environmental impact. China should therefore pay more attention to the clean utilization of coal. (2) Low environmental efficiency mainly resulted from the joint effects of pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency; therefore, enterprises in these industries must engage in management efforts to improve their ability to manage large enterprises. (3) The energy intensive industries characterized by coal environmental efficiency that failed to achieve pure technological effectiveness all exhibited input redundancy or output inadequacy of varying degrees while showing a potential for energy conservation and emissions reductions. There is a significant difference in the performance of waste cooking oil-to-energy companies in China. Most biofuel companies face a loss while a few others have high recovery rates and strong profitability. To shed light on this phenomenon and to aide in formulating policy, this paper constructs a framework from the two dimensions of X-Y and investigates the impact of government intervention on biofuel companies' performance by taking two companies located in the kitchen waste-to-resource pilot cities of Changzhou and Suzhou. Results indicate that: (1) the basic policy instruments of information disclosed and fee and penalty mechanisms in Changzhou are inferior to those of Suzhou. On the other hand, capital investment and cooperation between stakeholders are better in Changzhou. As for the value chain dimension, the policies are similar in both cities. This means that companies involved in the recycling of waste cooking oil and biofuel production equally neglect research and development, preferential loan and product sales by government. (2) In terms of effectiveness, recycling rates and company profits for Changzhou Yueda Kate New Energy Co. Ltd. are far below those of Suzhou Clean Environmental Technology Co. Ltd. Whether the biofuel companies are authorized by government or not, fee and penalty mechanisms and information disclosure are the key determinants affecting performance of biofuel companies. (3) There is still some room to improve the performance of Suzhou Clean Environmental Technology Co. Ltd. Policies can focus on the following: strengthening R & D, which improves the technological supply and diffusion capability of biofuel companies; building the demand-typed policy frame and adjusting policy structure; improving the market structure of biofuel companies. There is a large amount of water consumption embodied in energy production. Driven by a growing population and economy, the energy sector will continue to expand, increasing more pressure on the fresh water demand of countries. This paper analyzes the energy–water nexus embodied in international energy trade via a combination of input–output analysis (IOA) and ecological network analysis (ENA). The energy–water element nexus is depicted based on a mixed-unit IOA to investigate the parallel relationship between energy and water. ENA is used to uncover energy–water pathways intertwined in global energy trade and identify the pair-wise relationship between countries according to the energy–water pathway nexus. Then, a case study of the international energy–water nexus of China is conducted. The results of energy–water nexus element analysis show that water use per unit of energy products in the country is much greater than those of other countries. Moreover, indirect water use during energy production deserves more attention, which is often neglected in water resource management. The results of energy–water nexus pathway analysis demonstrate that international energy trade has a positive effect on China’s water condition, mitigating serious water shortage problems but increasing dependency on other countries and regions. Mutual relationships among trading countries are described using utility and control analyses. The results show that system integrality is arguably more critical in determining system behavior than direct effects alone. Europe changes from a beneficiary in direct mutual relationships to a contributor in integral utility mutual relationships, whereas Australia has an opposite change. Although China has a dominant position in direct relationships, it becomes an equal competitor with the USA in utility mutual relationships. China depends heavily on most countries, especially those in South and Central America, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia. The network mutualism index (=0.56) and synergism index (=9.187) indicate that the current global energy trade network has negative relationships within a competitive environment. As one of the most populous provinces in China, Sichuan is also the most important regions for ecology protection and rural poverty alleviation in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. The rural energy industry of Sichuan Province has a national ecological and political significance for reducing excessive utilization for fossil fuels, protecting ecosystem, fostering equal development for urban-rural economy. However, this industry of Sichuan remains to be deteriorated by multiple risks. Hitherto, risk management research on rural energy industry is rather limited. Therefore, according to the fault tree analysis and catastrophe model, this study has implemented a complete and comprehensive risk management procedure on rural energy industry of Sichuan Province based on data of 31 provinces ranging from 2008 to 2012 in China. Based on the fault tree analysis for risk identification, four categories of risks have been revealed: financial risks, service networks risks, energy provision risks as well as enterprises risks. Furthermore, 13 risk indicators have been identified because they have imposed negative impacts upon rural energy industry in Sichuan to a large extent. The catastrophe model for risk evaluation has presented that the risk value of Sichuan rural energy industry (A) reaches the highest risk level. Simultaneously, financial risks (M1), energy provision risks (M3), enterprises risks (M4) have also been ranked as the highest risk grade. The result of risk response indicates that X9 (poor construction for wind energy provision projects), X13 (low output values for energy-saving stoves and kangs production enterprises), M4 (enterprises risks) have the priorities for risk response. This paper suggests that it is urgent and paramount to establish an exclusive risk supervising center which can integrate government ministries, financial agencies, universities and research institutions, non-government organizations via joint participation and interactive communication in risk identification, risk evaluation, risk response as well as risk supervising. This paper uses a meta-frontier slack-based DEA model to measure the ecological total-factor energy efficiency as well as the energy conservation potential of China’s four energy intensive subsectors. We incorporate both desirable and undesirable output together in the period, 2000–2013. The conclusions are: firstly, under the meta-frontier, the four subsectors of energy intensive industries have low average level of ecological total-factor energy efficiencies. They are 0.137, 0.212, 0.238, and 0.307 in the non-metallic mineral products manufacturing industry, raw chemical materials and chemical products manufacturing industry, smelting and pressing of ferrous metals industry, and smelting and pressing of non-ferrous metals industry, respectively. Secondly, the ecological energy efficiency in East China is the highest among three regions. Central China and West China are behind, but they are extremely close to each other. Thirdly, East China almost has no technology gap pertaining to energy efficiency, while Central China and West China almost have the same gap. Finally, Sichuan is considered to be the best province in West China under group frontier due to its perform in the three energy intensive subsectors. China׳s thermal power industry is now facing some new challenges. The slowing down of the macro economy, the surplus added capacity, low generating hours and the cut of feed-in tariff has now made the decision maker of both government and thermal power enterprises look back and rethink the future development of the whole thermal power industry. In this paper, we give an overall review of China׳s thermal power development based on industry data of the year 2014 and first half year of 2015, followed by a description of the 2015 feed-in tariff adjustment. The feed-in tariff averagely decreased by 0.02 Yuan/kWh, subjecting the thermal power enterprises to great income losses. To give a micro review of how the thermal power perform under such circumstances, we also make an emphatic analysis based on the investigated data of six representative thermal power plants. We can see that the unit benefit varied in the range of 0.03–0.08 Yuan/kWh, and this indicator may be even lower in 2015 as the adjustment of feed-in tariff. The 2015 Paris climate change negotiations represents the most ambitious worldwide effort to date to combat climate change. As the largest energy consumer and carbon emitter, China pledges 60–65% cut in carbon intensity below 2005 levels by 2030. To accelerate China's climate efforts, China has also committed to cap its primary energy use at 4.8 billion tons of coal equivalent in 2020. This paper proposes an equitable and efficient scheme to disaggregate this national goal among provinces. A three-step disaggregation procedure is proposed which takes into account the initial allocation, national redistribution and inter-provincial adjustment. First, this study allocates the incremental energy quota, taking 2010 as the base year. Second, part of the energy quota is set aside by the central government for redistribution purposes, while an incremental energy quota index comprising equity and efficiency criteria is used for initial allocation among provinces. Finally, historical efforts and inter-provincial energy flows are considered for inter-provincial adjustment. This disaggregation scheme is flexible and can be easily extended to allocation and management of other resource and environmental targets. The empirical findings can assist decision-makers in identifying which provinces are likely to over-consume the energy quota relative to the proposed allocation and which provinces are likely to perform better in energy conservation. Moreover, the results show that the energy cap set for 2020 is unachievable without further action. Unlike previous studies, this paper empirically investigates the impact of urbanization on energy consumption and CO 2 emissions with consideration of provincial differences. The results show the following: (1) Urbanization increases energy consumption and CO 2 emissions in China, but it is not the most outstanding contributor to the increases. (2) Significant differences exist between provinces in terms of the impact of urbanization on energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. The distribution of urbanization strongly and relatively strongly affects energy consumption in regions with high-urbanization areas but also those with low-urbanization areas. Meanwhile, urbanization strongly and relatively strongly affects the regional CO 2 emissions in northern China, where the major coal production areas, characterized by an energy-guzzling heavy industry base, are located. (3) Some evidence supports the arguments of urban environmental transition theory. Cities at a post-industrial stage (such as Beijing and Shanghai) experience a large effect from urbanization because of higher energy consumption in private residential and public service sectors, while in western and central China, the impact of urbanization can be associated with industrial development, which is characterized by low energy efficiency, high energy consumption and high emissions. In eastern China, the coexistence of light industrial structures and rapid urbanization has led to a smaller impact from urbanization on energy consumption and CO 2 emissions than in the other two regions. Emerging economies account for a fast-growing share of the global energy market. In particular, energy use in China has become significant from both economic and environmental standpoints. This trend makes it necessary to balance the need for affordable, reliable electricity supply with the need to ensure that the power infrastructure is environmentally sustainable. As such, this paper presents a multi-dimensional pinch analysis (MDPA) of the power generation sector in China; the analysis considers five key indices: carbon footprint, energy return on investment (EROI), water footprint, land footprint, and risk to humans. By simultaneously quantifying five different indices under a common methodological framework, we are able to coherently assess the impact on five different environmental concerns. This approach provides a more complete picture of the true environmental impact of China's power sector. This information can thus help policymakers avoid the problem of shifting environmental impacts to other domains, which can occur when the analytic procedure used focuses on a single environmental dimension. The lack of energy efficiency in China is always of interest. This paper builds a total-factor energy efficiency framework which contains coal energy, oil energy, and clean energy, which emits fewer pollutants into the atmosphere when used. We study the “China Statistical Yearbook” and the “China Energy Statistical Yearbook” to identify which type of energy contributes most to low energy efficiency in China. Our conclusion is that the total-factor energy efficiency ( TFEE ) in China has been at a relatively low level without any significant improvement from 1998 to 2010. The efficiencies of coal and oil energy have improved moderately, while there is no obvious improvement in the efficiency of clean energy. Despite the moderately improved efficiency of coal energy, its relatively low level contributes most to the overall energy inefficiency because it is the main fuel used in China. The iron & steel industry is one of the major industrial sectors of energy consumption and CO 2 emissions in China. In this paper, we estimate the total factor CO 2 emissions performance (TFCP) and the CO 2 emission mitigation potential (CMP) in China׳s iron & steel sector using the stochastic frontier analysis technique. During the period of 2000–2011, the average TFCP of China׳s iron & steel industry was 0.780, the cumulative CMP was 835.32 million tons in 12 years, and the average annual CMP was 69.61 million tons. Regional analysis showed that the TFCP is high in the northeastern and eastern regions but low in the central and western inland regions. Since the CMP is affected not only by TFCP, but also by the actual CO 2 emissions, both the eastern and western regions have the greatest potential for reducing CO 2 emissions. For the eastern region, the realization of the CMP relies on structural reform and government regulation; while for the western region, policies should focus on changing the production pattern and reducing efficiency loss. This paper introduces an improved total-factor ESTR (energy-saving target ratio) index, which combines the sequence technique and the “energy direction” to a DEA (data envelopment analysis) model, in order to measure the possible energy saving potential of a manufacturing sector. Afterward, the energy saving potentials of four different energy carriers, namely coal, gasoline, diesel oil and electricity, for 27 manufacturing sectors during the period of 1998–2011 in China are calculated. The results and its policy implications are as follows: (1) the average ESTRs of coal, gasoline, diesel oil and electricity are 1.714%, 49.939%, 24.465% and 3.487% respectively. Hence, energy saving of manufacturing sectors should put more emphasis on gasoline and diesel oil. (2) The key sectors for gasoline saving is the energy-intensive sectors, while the key sectors for diesel oil saving is the equipment manufacturing sectors. (3) The manufacture of raw chemical materials and chemical products sector not only consumes a large amount of oil, but also has a low efficiency of oil usage. Therefore, it is the key sector for oil saving. (4) Manufacture of tobacco and manufacture of communication equipment, computers and other electronic equipment are the benchmark for the four major energy carriers of energy-saving ratios. With low energy intensity and great potential for growth, the commercial sector has become one of the key sectors for energy conservation and emission reduction in the context of China's rapid urbanization process. Based on the EIA (Energy Information Administration) statistical methods, this paper calculates the energy consumption of China's commercial sector from 1981 to 2012, specifies the determinants of commercial energy demand, forecasts future energy consumption and estimates the energy conservation potentials using the Johansen co-integration methodology. The results indicate: (i) GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and urbanization have positive effects on the energy consumption of the commercial sector while labor productivity and energy price contribute to reduction in the sector's energy consumption. (ii) Under the basic scenario, energy consumption of the commercial sector will be 317.34 and 469.84 Mtce (million tons of coal equivalent) in 2015 and 2020 respectively. (iii) Under the moderate and advanced scenario, about 187.00 and 531.45 Mtce respectively of the energy consumption of the commercial sector can be conserved from 2013 to 2020. Despite reforms, China still largely applies the cost plus pricing mechanism for the energy sector. Government administrative energy pricing leads to energy price distortions, which could result in not only the excessive and wasteful energy consumption, but also environmental deterioration, thereby undermining energy conservation and emission abatement. Using fossil-fuel subsidies as a proxy for the level of energy price distortions, this paper estimates the subsidy of 22 Chinese departments during the period 2006–2010, and adopts the price-gap approach to analyze the impacts of subsidy removal on energy consumption and CO 2 emissions for the various sectors and energy types. The results demonstrate that removing energy subsidies would reduce energy consumption and emissions by 3.77% and 2.85%, respectively, but the effects vary across sectors. The transport, storage and post sector and the electricity, gas and water supply sector are much more affected by energy subsidies removal than other sectors. With respect to energy types, fuel oil and natural gas are sensitive to subsidies, indicating the magnitude of their consumption. This suggests that removing subsidies on these fuel types could significantly reduce CO 2 emissions. Finally, we comprehensively discuss relevant policy issues on energy price formation reform. Demand for electricity in China kept accelerating in recent years; moreover, there exist serious mismatches among the distribution of power demand, energy resources, and power generation infrastructure across different regions in China, both of which indicate a necessity of a holistic and integrated approach to the strategic planning and development of its power industry. Material benefits could be realized by ensuring that the long term development of the power system is optimized by taking into consideration the different regional dynamics and characteristics. This paper proposes a multi-region optimization model that can deliver insights into how planning of the long term development of China’s power sector could minimize the total cost of China’s power sector by considering regional variations in availabilities of resources and inter-region power transmission line capacity. A case study considered how investment decisions to expand and alter the existing generation mix could be optimized across a timeframe from 2011 to 2050. By comparing results between single and multi-region optimizations, it was possible to show the likely impact on how investment decisions would differ when regional differences were taken into account. The growing conflict between economic growth, energy and environment in China has restrained the country's economic development. In this work we investigated the interaction among the Chinese economy, energy production and consumption and the impacts of concomitant air emissions from 2000 to 2011, using an indicator system based on energy, emergy and money units. The results show that China's rapid economic growth has promoted tremendous expansion in energy production and consumption, which have led to increasing the impact of emissions in this study period. During the time examined, energy production and use efficiencies and the structure of the energy sector improved slightly; the self-sufficiency of energy use fluctuated, as petroleum took on an increasingly strong dependence on imports; fossil energy, mainly coming from coal, still has a majority share in energy production and consumption of the nation; the environmental loading intensity of energy consumption decreased slightly while that of energy production increased; most of the impacts of energy-related emissions are derived from their impact on human health; the impact of emissions from energy production made an increasing contribution to the total impact. Generally speaking, China's economic growth still heavily depends on energy-intensive industries that put great pressure on energy supply and pollution control. Although China has made obvious progress in energy mix optimization to save energy and reduce emissions, the pace of improvement still fell behind that of economic growth. Finally, this paper discussed some related issues and presented corresponding suggestions to further coordinate the relationship between the economy, energy production and consumption and the environment. Based on data of China׳s power industry from 2005 to 2010, this research applies the SBM approach of the dynamic DEA model (one of the efficiency measurement methods that corresponds with economy–energy–environment trinity) to analyze the Energy-Efficiency-Dynamic Total Factor Productivity (ECDTFP 1 1 Energy-Efficiency-Dynamic Total Factor Productivity (ECDTFP), a total factor productivity which considering the influence of environment efficiency, energy efficiency and economic efficiency. In our paper, this ECDTFP are drawn from the DSBM model. ) of the power industry and the efficiency effect of changing investment structure on the industry. The results indicate that the introduction of foreign capital and the reform to lower the share of state investment are conducive to raise the ECDTFP in the power sector. In addition, it is important to focus on vital factors such as the production structure, the industry concentration and the regional technology investment intensity, which significantly affect the productivity of the power sector in future policies and reforms.
