Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to introduce a novel cross (+) type yoke with hybrid electromagnets and new reluctance modeling to precisely calculate attraction force is given. Design/methodology/approach: The comparison of attraction force and torque analyses between the proposed formulation and the existing formulation in the literature is comparatively presented. For the correctness of the force and torque values calculated in the model created, the system was created in ANSYS Maxwell and its accuracy was proved by making analyses. The maglev carrier system is inherently unstable from the point of view of control engineering. For that, it needs an active controller to eliminate this instability. For the levitation of the carrier system, it is necessary to design a controller in three axes (z, α and β). I-PD controller was designed for the air gap control of the carrier system in three axes and the controller parameters were determined by the canonical method. Findings: While the new formulation proposed in the modeling of the carrier system has a maximum error of 1.03%, the existing formula in the literature has an error of 16.83% in the levitation distance point. Originality/value: A novel cross-type hybrid carrier system has been proposed in the literature. With the double integral used in modeling the system, it takes a long time to solve symbolically, and it is difficult to simulate dynamic behavior in control validation. To solve this problem, attraction force and inclination torque values are easily characterized by new formulation and besides the simulations are conducted easily. The experimental setup was manufactured and assembled, and the carrier system was successfully levitated, and reference tracking was performed without overshoot. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: High torque ripple is the significant challenge of the synchronous reluctance machine in household electric appliances, electric vehicles and so on. This paper aims to present an optimized design of a synchronous reluctance rotor structure to reduce the torque ripple with improving the average torque by the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. Design/methodology/approach: The optimization of rotor geometries has been investigated. Most of the rotor parameters such as the width of iron parts, the width of barriers along d and q axes and the endpoint angle of barriers are optimized by a new method using the PSO algorithm. After optimization, the resulted optimum design along with the initial design is simulated by two-dimensional finite element method and results are compared. At the end, a prototype is constructed and tested. Results of the experiment are compared with the simulation results where acceptable adoption is yielded. Findings: Minimizing the torque ripple without losing the average torque is an important achievement of the synchronous reluctance motor (SynRM) optimization; furthermore, the finite element analysis and experimental results indicate that the torque ripple of the SynRM with the optimized rotor is reduced significantly. Also, increasing the number of optimization parameters can effectively obtain an accurate shape of the SynRM barrier. Originality/value: Because of the high number of parameters in synchronous reluctance rotors, the majority of proposed optimizations did not use all geometric parameters of the rotor and tried to simplify the optimization by ignoring several optimization parameters or reducing the number of flux barriers. Purpose: The torque ripple and fault-tolerant capability are the two main problems for the switched reluctance motors (SRMs) in applications. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to propose a novel 16/10 segmented SRM (SSRM) to reduce the torque ripple and improve the fault-tolerant capability in this work. Design/methodology/approach: The stator of the proposed SSRM is composed of exciting and auxiliary stator poles, while the rotor consists of a series of discrete segments. The fault-tolerant and torque ripple characteristics of the proposed SSRM are studied by the finite element analysis (FEA) method. Meanwhile, the characteristics of the SSRM are compared with those of a conventional SRM with 8/6 stator/rotor poles. Finally, FEA and experimental results are provided to validate the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed SSRM. Findings: It is found that the proposed novel 16/10 SSRM for the application in the belt-driven starter generator (BSG) possesses these functions: less mutual inductance and high fault-tolerant capability. It is also found that the proposed SSRM provides lower torque ripple and higher output torque. Finally, the experimental results validate that the proposed SSRM runs with lower torque ripple, better output torque and fault-tolerant characteristics, making it an ideal candidate for the BSG and similar systems. Purpose Inductance, torque and iron loss are the key parameters of switched reluctance motors for belt-driven starter generators. This paper aims to present the analysis of a segmented rotor switched reluctance motor (SSRM) with three types of winding connections for hybrid electric vehicle applications by using a two-dimensional finite element method.Design/methodology/approach The rotor of the studied SSRM consists of a series of discrete segments, while the stator is made up of exciting and auxiliary teeth. First, the concept and structures of the different winding connections are introduced. Then, the magnetic flux path of the three types of winding connections for the SSRM is described. Second, the magnetic flux distributions in the three parts, i.e. the stator yoke, the stator tooth and the rotor segment, are described in detail to calculate the iron losses. Third, three SSRMs with the different winding arrangements are analyzed and compared to evaluate the distinct features of the studied SSRM. The analysis and comparison mainly include self-inductances, mutual inductances, phase currents, output torque and iron loss.Findings It is found that the self-inductances of the three types of winding connections are almost equal, and only the SSRM1 has a positive mutual inductance. In addition, the current waveforms of SSRM1 and SSRM2 are regular. However, it is irregular in SSRM3. It is shown that SSRM1 has better characteristics, such as higher output torque, high power density, lower torque ripple and iron loss.Originality/value This paper proposes and analyzes three novel winding connections for the SSRM to provide guidance for enhancing the output torque and reducing the iron loss to achieve high efficiency. Purpose Synchronous Reluctance (SynRel) motors are known to suffer from excessive torque ripples. The classical way to avoid this drawback of the motor is skewing the slots. This paper aims to provide an analytic estimation of the best skew angle to minimize the ripples in such SynRel motors with tooth windings. The approach used in this paper consists of the minimization of the spectral components of the magnetic energy that cause these oscillation torques. The method was validated by means of a multi-slice finite element model (FEM).Design/methodology/approach An analytic model, based on permeance theory, is derived to analyse the electromagnetic phenomena taking place inside of the motor. This model allows the identification of the causes underlying the torque ripple production. Based on this understanding, the most suitable skew angle can be determined. The analytic method, together with the best skew angle, is validated by means of an FEM of a SynRel machine.Findings A method to determine the optimum skew angle for a SynRel machine is presented. It depends on the wave-number of the magnetic waves producing the torque ripple. It is twice the one typically chosen for induction machines.Practical/implications The proposed approach allows improving on the design methodology for the production of smoothly running SynRel machines.Originality/value The methodology utilized in this paper is based on the relationship between the mechanical torque and the magnetic energy stored in the motor (virtual work law). From this, the best skew angle to eliminate the magnetic energy causing torque ripple can be determined. Purpose This paper aims to propose a novel mathematical model of bearingless switched reluctance motor (BSRM). This model differs from conventional mathematical models in the calculation of torque and suspension forces. Conventional mathematical models neglect the coupling relationship between the α- and β-axes or ignore the magnetic saturation of the Si-Fe material. This study considers these issues simultaneously. Additionally, considering the air-gap edge effect, the fringing coefficient is used to establish a high-precision mathematical model.Design/methodology/approach An innovative mathematical model of BSRM based on the Maxwell stress method was established by selecting an appropriate integration path. The fringing coefficient of the air-gap was computed based on the finite element analysis results at the aligned position of the stator and rotor poles. Using the least squares fitting method, the piecewise fitted magnetization curve of the Si-Fe material was utilized to calculate flux density.Findings The appropriate integration path of the Maxwell stress method was selected, which considered the coupling relationship of the suspension forces in the α- and β-axes and was closer to the actual situation. The fringing coefficient of the air-gap improved the calculation accuracy of air-gap flux density. The magnetomotive force was consumed by the magnetic resistance of the stator and rotor poles considering the magnetic saturation.Originality/value A novel mathematical model of BSRM is proposed. Different from conventional mathematical models, the proposed model can effectively solve the coupling relationship of the suspension forces in the α- and β-axes. Additionally, this model is consistent with the actual situation of motor as it includes a reasonable calculation of the air-gap flux density, considering the air-gap edge effect and magnetic saturation. Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to compare torque calculation methods when a non-conforming movement interface is implemented by means of Lagrange multipliers. Design/methodology/approach - The following methods are here used for computing the torque in a synchronous machine and in a switched reluctance motor: Arkkio's method (AM), local Jacobian matrix derivative (LJD) method, Maxwell stress tensor method (MST) and co-energy variation method. Findings - This paper shows that, the numerical stability produced by Lagrange multipliers yields a stable torque result, even in thin airgap machines if AM, LJD method or MST method are used. Originality/value - This work presents a comparative study to indicate the performance of the most commonly used torque calculation methods, when a non-conforming technique is used, considering a small displacement of the rotor, which is necessary for dynamic cases or coupling with circuit.
