Although many successful ensemble clustering approaches have been developed in recent years, there are still two limitations to most of the existing approaches. First, they mostly overlook the issue of uncertain links, which may mislead the overall consensus process. Second, they generally lack the ability to incorporate global information to refine the local links. To address these two limitations, in this paper, we propose a novel ensemble clustering approach based on sparse graph representation and probability trajectory analysis. In particular, we present the elite neighbor selection strategy to identify the uncertain links by locally adaptive thresholds and build a sparse graph with a small number of probably reliable links. We argue that a small number of probably reliable links can lead to significantly better consensus results than using all graph links regardless of their reliability. The random walk process driven by a new transition probability matrix is utilized to explore the global information in the graph. We derive a novel and dense similarity measure from the sparse graph by analyzing the probability trajectories of the random walkers, based on which two consensus functions are further proposed. The availability of many heterogeneous but related views of data has arisen in numerous clustering problems. Different views encode distinct representations of the same data, which often admit the same underlying cluster structure. The goal of multi-view clustering is to properly combine information from multiple views so as to generate high quality clustering results that are consistent across different views. Based on max-product belief propagation, we propose a novel multi-view clustering algorithm termed multi-view affinity propagation (MVAP). The basic idea is to establish a multi-view clustering model consisting of two components, which measure the within-view clustering quality and the explicit clustering consistency across different views, respectively. Solving this model is NP-hard, and a multi-view affinity propagation is proposed, which works by passing messages both within individual views and across different views. However, the exemplar consistency constraint makes the optimization almost impossible. To this end, by using some previously designed mathematical techniques, the messages as well as the cluster assignment vector computations are simplified to get simple yet functionally equivalent computations. Experimental results on several real-world multi-view datasets show that MVAP outperforms existing multi-view clustering algorithms. It is especially suitable for clustering more than two views. Recently, discovering dynamic communities has become an increasingly important task. Many algorithms have been proposed, most of which only use linkage structure. However, rich information is encoded in the content of social networks such as node content and edge content, which is essential to discover topically meaningful communities. Therefore, to detect both structurally and topically meaningful communities, linkage structure, node content and edge content should be integrated. The main challenge lies in how to integrate them dynamically in a seamless way. This paper proposes a novel transformation of content-based network into a Node-Edge Interaction (NEI) network where linkage structure, node content and edge content are embedded seamlessly. A differential activity based approach is proposed to incrementally maintain the NEI network as the content-based network evolves. To capture the semantic effect of different edge types, a transition probability matrix is devised for the NEI network. Based on this, heterogeneous random walk is applied to discover dynamic communities, leading to a new dynamic community detection method termed NEIWalk (NEI network based random Walk). The affinity propagation (AP) clustering algorithm has received much attention in the past few years. AP is appealing because it is efficient, insensitive to initialization, and it produces clusters at a lower error rate than other exemplar-based methods. However, its single-exemplar model becomes inadequate when applied to model multisubclasses in some situations such as scene analysis and character recognition. To remedy this deficiency, we have extended the single-exemplar model to a multi-exemplar one to create a new multi-exemplar affinity propagation (MEAP) algorithm. This new model automatically determines the number of exemplars in each cluster associated with a super exemplar to approximate the subclasses in the category. Solving the model is NP--hard and we tackle it with the max-sum belief propagation to produce neighborhood maximum clusters, with no need to specify beforehand the number of clusters, multi-exemplars, and superexemplars. Also, utilizing the sparsity in the data, we are able to reduce substantially the computational time and storage. In this paper, we propose a novel data stream clustering algorithm, termed SVStream, which is based on support vector domain description and support vector clustering. In the proposed algorithm, the data elements of a stream are mapped into a kernel space, and the support vectors are used as the summary information of the historical elements to construct cluster boundaries of arbitrary shape. To adapt to both dramatic and gradual changes, multiple spheres are dynamically maintained, each describing the corresponding data domain presented in the data stream. By allowing for bounded support vectors (BSVs), the proposed SVStream algorithm is capable of identifying overlapping clusters. A BSV decaying mechanism is designed to automatically detect and remove outliers (noise). We perform experiments over synthetic and real data streams, with the overlapping, evolving, and noise situations taken into consideration. Partitioning nonlinearly separable datasets is a basic problem that is associated with data clustering. In this paper, a novel approach that is termed graph-based multiprototype competitive learning (GMPCL) is proposed to handle this problem. A graph-based method is employed to produce an initial, coarse clustering. After that, a multiprototype competitive learning is introduced to refine the coarse clustering and discover clusters of an arbitrary shape. The GMPCL algorithm is further extended to deal with high-dimensional data clustering, i.e., the fast graph-based multiprototype competitive learning (FGMPCL) algorithm. An experimental comparison has been performed by the exploitation of both synthetic and real-world datasets to validate the effectiveness of the proposed methods. Additionally, we apply our GMPCL/FGMPCL to two computer-vision tasks, namely, automatic color image segmentation and video clustering. In conventional person re-identification (re-id), the images used for model training in the training probe set and training gallery set are all assumed to be instance-level samples that are manually labeled from raw surveillance video (likely with the assistance of detection) in a frame-by-frame manner. This labeling across multiple non-overlapping camera views from raw video surveillance is expensive and time consuming. To overcome these issues, we consider a weakly supervised person re-id modeling that aims to find the raw video clips where a given target person appears. In our weakly supervised setting, during training, given a sample of a person captured in one camera view, our weakly supervised approach aims to train a re-id model without further instance-level labeling for this person in another camera view. The weak setting refers to matching a target person with an untrimmed gallery video where we only know that the identity appears in the video without the requirement of annotating the identity in any frame of the video during the training procedure. The weakly supervised person re-id is challenging since it not only suffers from the difficulties occurring in conventional person re-id (e.g., visual ambiguity and appearance variations caused by occlusions, pose variations, background clutter, etc.), but more importantly, is also challenged by weakly supervised information because the instance-level labels and the ground-truth locations for person instances (i.e., the ground-truth bounding boxes of person instances) are absent. To solve the weakly supervised person re-id problem, we develop deep graph metric learning (DGML). On the one hand, DGML measures the consistency between intra-video spatial graphs of consecutive frames, where the spatial graph captures neighborhood relationship about the detected person instances in each frame. On the other hand, DGML distinguishes the inter-video spatial graphs captured from different camera views at different sites simultaneously. To further explicitly embed weak supervision into the DGML and solve the weakly supervised person re-id problem, we introduce weakly supervised regularization (WSR), which utilizes multiple weak video-level labels to learn discriminative features by means of a weak identity loss and a cross-video alignment loss. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate the feasibility of the weakly supervised person re-id approach and its special cases (e.g., its bag-to-bag extension) and show that the proposed DGML is effective. Matching pedestrians across disjoint camera views is a challenging task, since their observations are separated in time and space and their appearances may vary considerably. Recently, some approaches of matching pedestrians have been proposed. However, these approaches either used too complex representations or only considered the color information and discarded the spatial structural information of the pedestrian. In order to describe the spatial structural information in color space, we propose a distance-based local binary pattern (DLBP) descriptor. Besides the spatial structural information, the color itself namely its intensity value is also an important feature in matching pedestrians across disjoint camera views. In order to effectively combine these two kinds of information, we further propose a novel CI_DLBP descriptor, which unifies the color intensity and DLBP by learning the joint distributions (2-D histograms) of the DLBP and color intensity at each channel. In addition, different from the previous approaches in which the pedestrians matching is based on their whole bodies, we develop a part-based pedestrian representation because the color density and spatial structural information between the upper outer garment and the lower garment worn by the pedestrian is usually different. Experimental results on challenging realistic scenarios and VIPeR dataset validate the proposed DLBP operator, the CI_DLBP descriptor, and the part-based pedestrian representation for pedestrian matching across disjoint camera views. In this paper, we propose a self-reconfigurable platform which can reconfigure the architecture of discrete cosine transform (DCT) computations during run-time using dynamic partial reconfiguration. The scalable architecture of DCT computations can compute different numbers of DCT coefficients in a zig-zag scan order to adapt to different requirements, such as power consumption, hardware resources, and performance. We propose a configuration manager, which is implemented in the embedded processor in order to adaptively control the reconfiguration of scalable DCT architecture during run-time. In addition, we use the Lempel-Ziv-Storer-Szymanski algorithm for compression of the partial bitstreams and on-chip BlockRAM as a cache to reduce latency overhead for loading the partial bitstreams from the off-chip memory for run-time reconfiguration. A hardware module is designed for parallel reconfiguration of the partial bitstreams. The experimental results show that our approach can reduce the external memory accesses by 69% and can achieve a 400 MB/s reconfiguration rate. In this paper, we present a unified architecture that can perform Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Inverse Discrete Cosine Transform (IDCT), DCT domain motion estimation and compensation (DCT-ME/MC). Our proposed architecture is a Wavefront Array-based Processor with a highly modular structure consisting of 8×8 Processing Elements (PEs). By utilizing statistical properties and arithmetic operations, it can be used as a high performance hardware accelerator for video transcoding applications. We show how different core algorithms can be mapped onto the same hardware fabric and can be executed through the pre-defined PEs. In addition to the simplified design process of the proposed architecture and savings of the hardware resources, we also demonstrate that high throughput rate can be achieved for IDCT and DCT-MC by fully utilizing the sparseness property of DCT coefficient matrix. This paper addresses the dimension reduction problem in Fisherface for face recognition. When the number of training samples is less than the image dimension (total number of pixels), the within-class scatter matrix (Sw) in Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is singular, and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is suggested to employ in Fisherface for dimension reduction of Sw so that it becomes nonsingular. The popular method is to select the largest nonzero eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors for LDA. To attenuate the illumination effect, some researchers suggested removing the three eigenvectors with the largest eigenvalues and the performance is improved. However, as far as we know, there is no systematic way to determine which eigenvalues should be used. Along this line, this paper proposes a theorem to interpret why PCA can be used in LDA and an automatic and systematic method to select the eigenvectors to be used in LDA using a Genetic Algorithm (GA). A GA-PCA is then developed. It is found that some small eigenvectors should also be used as part of the basis for dimension reduction. Using the GA-PCA to reduce the dimension, a GA-Fisher method is designed and developed. Comparing with the traditional Fisherface method, the proposed GA-Fisher offers two additional advantages. First, optimal bases for dimensionality reduction are derived from GA-PCA. Second, the computational efficiency of LDA is improved by adding a whitening procedure after dimension reduction. The fact that instructions in programs often produce repetitive results has motivated researchers to explore various techniques, such as value prediction and value reuse, to exploit this behavior. Value prediction improves the available Instruction-Level Parallelism (ILP) in superscalar processors by allowing dependent instructions to be executed speculatively after predicting the values of their input operands. Value reuse, on the other hand, tries to eliminate redundant computation by storing the previously produced results of instructions and skipping the execution of redundant instructions. Previous value reuse mechanisms use a single instruction or a naturally formed instruction group, such as a basic block, a trace, or a function, as the reuse unit. These naturally-formed instruction groups are readily identifiable by the hardware at runtime without compiler assistance. However, the performance potential of a value reuse mechanism depends on its reuse detection time, the number of reuse opportunities, and the amount of work saved by skipping each reuse unit. Since larger instruction groups typically have fewer reuse opportunities than smaller groups, but they provide greater benefit for each reuse-detection process, it is very important to find the balance point that provides the largest overall performance gain. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism called subblock reuse. Subblocks are created by slicing basic blocks either dynamically or with compiler guidance. The dynamic approaches use the number of instructions, numbers of inputs and outputs, or the presence of store instructions to determine the subblock boundaries. The compiler-assisted approach slices basic blocks using data-flow considerations to balance the reuse granularity and the number of reuse opportunities. Person reidentification, which matches person images of the same identity across nonoverlapping camera views, becomes an important component for cross-camera-view activity analysis. Most (if not all) person reidentification algorithms are designed based on appearance features. However, appearance features are not stable across nonoverlapping camera views under dramatic lighting change, and those algorithms assume that two cross-view images of the same person can be well represented either by exploring robust and invariant features or by learning matching distance. Such an assumption ignores the nature that images are captured under different camera views with different camera characteristics and environments, and thus, mostly there exists large discrepancy between the extracted features under different views. To solve this problem, we formulate an asymmetric distance model for learning camera-specific projections to transform the unmatched features of each view into a common space where discriminative features across view space are extracted. A cross-view consistency regularization is further introduced to model the correlation between view-specific feature transformations of different camera views, which reflects their nature relations and plays a significant role in avoiding overfitting. A kernel cross-view discriminant component analysis is also presented. Extensive experiments have been conducted to show that asymmetric distance modeling is important for person reidentification, which matches the concerns on cross-disjoint-view matching, reporting superior performance compared with related distance learning methods on six publically available data sets. Person re-identification (re-id) aims to match people across non-overlapping camera views. So far the RGB-based appearance is widely used in most existing works. However, when people appeared in extreme illumination or changed clothes, the RGB appearance-based re-id methods tended to fail. To overcome this problem, we propose to exploit depth information to provide more invariant body shape and skeleton information regardless of illumination and color change. More specifically, we exploit depth voxel covariance descriptor and further propose a locally rotation invariant depth shape descriptor called Eigen-depth feature to describe pedestrian body shape. We prove that the distance between any two covariance matrices on the Riemannian manifold is equivalent to the Euclidean distance between the corresponding Eigen-depth features. Furthermore, we propose a kernelized implicit feature transfer scheme to estimate Eigen-depth feature implicitly from RGB image when depth information is not available. We find that combining the estimated depth features with RGB-based appearance features can sometimes help to better reduce visual ambiguities of appearance features caused by illumination and similar clothes. Despite the remarkable progress achieved in conventional instance segmentation, the problem of predicting instance segmentation results for unobserved future frames remains challenging due to the unobservability of future data. Existing methods mainly address this challenge by forecasting features of future frames. However, these methods always treat features of multiple levels (e.g., coarse-to-fine pyramid features) independently and do not exploit them collaboratively, which results in inaccurate prediction for future frames; and moreover, such a weakness can partially hinder self-adaption of a future segmentation prediction model for different input samples. To solve this problem, we propose an adaptive aggregation approach called Auto-Path Aggregation Network (APANet), where the spatio-temporal contextual information obtained in the features of each individual level is selectively aggregated using the developed “auto-path”. The “auto-path” connects each pair of features extracted at different pyramid levels for task-specific hierarchical contextual information aggregation, which enables selective and adaptive aggregation of pyramid features in accordance with different videos/frames. Our APANet can be further optimized jointly with the Mask R-CNN head as a feature decoder and a Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) feature encoder, forming a joint learning system for future instance segmentation prediction. We experimentally show that the proposed method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on three video-based instance segmentation benchmarks for future instance segmentation prediction. Most proximity-based multi-view clustering methods are sensitive to the initial proximity matrix, where the clustering performance is quite unstable when using different initial proximity matrixes. This problem is defined as the initial value sensitivity problem. Since clustering is an unsupervised learning task, it is unrealistic to tune the initial proximity matrix. Thus, how to overcome the initial value sensitivity problem is a significant but unsolved issue in the proximity-based multi-view clustering. To this end, this paper proposes a novel multi-view proximity learning method, named multi-view consensus proximity learning (MCPL). On the one hand, by integrating the information of all views in a self-weighted manner and giving a rank constraint on the Laplacian matrix, the MCPL method learns the consensus proximity matrix to directly reflect the clustering result. On the other hand, different from most multi-view proximity learning methods, in the proposed MCPL method, the data representatives rather than the original data objects are adopted to learn the consensus proximity matrix. The data representatives will be updated in the process of the proximity learning so as to weaken the impact of the initial value on the clustering performance. Recently, some attempts have been made in introducing deep neural networks (DNNs) to recommender systems for generating more accurate prediction due to the nonlinear representation learning capability of DNNs. However, they inevitably result in high computational and storage costs. Worse still, due to the relatively small number of ratings that can be fed into DNNs, they may easily suffer from the overfitting issue. To tackle these issues, we propose a novel recommendation framework based on Back Propagation (BP) neural network with attention mechanism, namely BPAM++. In particular, the BP neural network is utilized to learn the complex relationship between the target user and his/her neighbors and the complex relationship between the target item and its neighbors. Compared with DNNs, the shallow neural network, i.e., BP neural network, can not only reduce the computational and storage costs, but also alleviate the overfitting issues in DNNs caused by a relatively small number of ratings. In addition, an attention mechanism is designed to capture the global impact of the nearest users of the target user on their nearest target user sets. This paper addresses the independent assumption issue in fusion process. In the last decade, dependency modeling techniques were developed under a specific distribution of classifiers or by estimating the joint distribution of the posteriors. This paper proposes a new framework to model the dependency between features without any assumption on feature/classifier distribution, and overcomes the difficulty in estimating the high-dimensional joint density. In this paper, we prove that feature dependency can be modeled by a linear combination of the posterior probabilities under some mild assumptions. Based on the linear combination property, two methods, namely, Linear Classifier Dependency Modeling (LCDM) and Linear Feature Dependency Modeling (LFDM), are derived and developed for dependency modeling in classifier level and feature level, respectively. The optimal models for LCDM and LFDM are learned by maximizing the margin between the genuine and imposter posterior probabilities. Both synthetic data and real datasets are used for experiments. Experimental results show that LCDM and LFDM with dependency modeling outperform existing classifier level and feature level combination methods under nonnormal distributions and on four real databases, respectively. Abstract-Two 3-5-GHz low-power ultra-wideband (UWB) low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) with out-band rejection function using 0.18- m CMOS technology are presented. Due to the Federal Communications Commission's stringent power-emission limitation at the transmitter, the received signal power in the UWB system is smaller than those of the close narrow band interferers such as the IEEE 802.11 a/b/g wireless local area network, and the 1.8-GHz digital cellular service/global system for mobile communications. Therefore, we proposed a wideband input network with out-band rejection capability to suppress the out-band properties for our first UWB LNA. Moreover, a feedback structure and dual-band notch filter with low-power active inductors will further attenuate the out-band interferers without deteriorating the input matching bandwidth in the second UWB LNA. The 55/48/45 dB maximum rejections at 1.8/2.4/5.2 GHz, a power gain of 15 dB, and 3.5-dB minimum noise figure can be measured while consuming a dc power of only 5 mW. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses two problems in linear discriminant analysis (LDA) of face recognition. The first one is the problem of recognition of human faces under pose and illumination variations. It is well known that the distribution of face images with different pose, illumination, and face expression is complex and nonlinear. The traditional linear methods, such as LDA, will not give a satisfactory performance. The second problem is the small sample size (S3) problem. This problem occurs when the number of training samples is smaller than the dimensionality of feature vector. In turn, the within-class scatter matrix will become singular. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a new kernel machine-based one-parameter regularized Fisher discriminant (K1PRFD) technique. K1PRFD is developed based on our previously developed one-parameter regularized discriminant analysis method and the well-known kernel approach. Therefore, K1PRFD consists of two parameters, namely the regularization parameter and kernel parameter. This paper further proposes a new method to determine the optimal kernel parameter in RBF kernel and regularized parameter in within-class scatter matrix simultaneously based on the conjugate gradient method. Three databases, namely FERET, Yale Group B, and CMU PIE, are selected for evaluation. The results are encouraging. This paper focuses on scalability and robustness of spectral clustering for extremely large-scale datasets with limited resources. Two novel algorithms are proposed, namely, ultra-scalable spectral clustering (U-SPEC) and ultra-scalable ensemble clustering (U-SENC). In U-SPEC, a hybrid representative selection strategy and a fast approximation method for $K$ K -nearest representatives are proposed for the construction of a sparse affinity sub-matrix. By interpreting the sparse sub-matrix as a bipartite graph, the transfer cut is then utilized to efficiently partition the graph and obtain the clustering result. In U-SENC, multiple U-SPEC clusterers are further integrated into an ensemble clustering framework to enhance the robustness of U-SPEC while maintaining high efficiency. Based on the ensemble generation via multiple U-SEPC's, a new bipartite graph is constructed between objects and base clusters and then efficiently partitioned to achieve the consensus clustering result. It is noteworthy that both U-SPEC and U-SENC have nearly linear time and space complexity, and are capable of robustly and efficiently partitioning 10-million-level nonlinearly-separable datasets on a PC with 64 GB memory. We developed a new method for fabricating plunge needle electrodes for use in cardiac mapping. The needles have 12 electrodes with 1-mm spacing, are 0.5 mm in diameter, and are fabricated from fiberglass reinforced epoxy. They are stiff enough to be easily inserted into beating hearts and durable enough to be reused many times. We found that these new needles elicit smaller, more quickly resolving injury potentials, and when inserted in a row with 2-mm spacing, disrupt ventricular fibrillation activation patterns less than traditional steel needles. The challenge of person re-identification (re-id) is to match individual images of the same person captured by different non-overlapping camera views against significant and unknown cross-view feature distortion. While a large number of distance metric/subspace learning models have been developed for re-id, the cross-view transformations they learned are view-generic and thus potentially less effective in quantifying the feature distortion inherent to each camera view. Learning view-specific feature transformations for re-id (i.e., view-specific re-id), an under-studied approach, becomes an alternative resort for this problem. In this work, we formulate a novel view-specific person re-identification framework from the feature augmentation point of view, called Camera coR relation Aware Feature augmenTation (CRAFT). Specifically, CRAFT performs cross-view adaptation by automatically measuring camera correlation from cross-view visual data distribution and adaptively conducting feature augmentation to transform the original features into a new adaptive space. Through our augmentation framework, view-generic learning algorithms can be readily generalized to learn and optimize view-specific sub-models whilst simultaneously modelling view-generic discrimination information. Therefore, our framework not only inherits the strength of view-generic model learning but also provides an effective way to take into account view specific characteristics. Our CRAFT framework can be extended to jointly learn view-specific feature transformations for person re-id across a large network with more than two cameras, a largely under-investigated but realistic re-id setting. Additionally, we present a domain-generic deep person appearance representation which is designed particularly to be towards view invariant for facilitating cross-view adaptation by CRAFT. In this paper, we investigate a novel reconfigurable part-based model, namely And-Or graph model, to recognize object shapes in images. Our proposed model consists of four layers: leaf-nodes at the bottom are local classifiers for detecting contour fragments; or-nodes above the leaf-nodes function as the switches to activate their child leaf-nodes, making the model reconfigurable during inference; and-nodes in a higher layer capture holistic shape deformations; one root-node on the top, which is also an or-node, activates one of its child and-nodes to deal with large global variations (e.g. different poses and views). We propose a novel structural optimization algorithm to discriminatively train the And-Or model from weakly annotated data. This algorithm iteratively determines the model structures (e.g. the nodes and their layouts) along with the parameter learning. On several challenging datasets, our model demonstrates the effectiveness to perform robust shape-based object detection against background clutter and outperforms the other state-of-the-art approaches. Supervised manifold learning has been successfully applied to action recognition, in which class label information could improve the recognition performance. However, the learned manifold may not be able to well preserve both the local structure and global constraint of temporal labels in action sequences. To overcome this problem, this paper proposes a new supervised manifold learning algorithm called supervised spatio-temporal neighborhood topology learning (SSTNTL) for action recognition. By analyzing the topological characteristics in the context of action recognition, we propose to construct the neighborhood topology using both supervised spatial and temporal pose correspondence information. Employing the property in locality preserving projection (LPP), SSTNTL solves the generalized eigenvalue problem to obtain the best projections that not only separates data points from different classes, but also preserves local structures and temporal pose correspondence of sequences from the same class. Experimental results demonstrate that SSTNTL outperforms the manifold embedding methods with other topologies or local discriminant information. Next-generation scientific applications require the capability to visualize large archival data sets or on-going computer simulations of physical and other phenomena over wide-area network connections. To minimize the latency in interactive visualizations across wide-area networks, we propose an approach that adaptively decomposes and maps the visualization pipeline onto a set of strategically selected network nodes. This scheme is realized by grouping the modules that implement visualization and networking subtasks and mapping them onto computing nodes with possibly disparate computing capabilities and network connections. Using estimates for communication and processing times of subtasks, we present a polynomial-time algorithm to compute a decomposition and mapping to achieve minimum end-to-end delay of the visualization pipeline. We present experimental results using geographically distributed deployments to demonstrate the effectiveness of this method in visualizing data sets from three application domains. This paper addresses the problem of automatically tuning multiple kernel parameters for the kernel-based linear discriminant analysis (LDA) method. The kernel approach has been proposed to solve face recognition problems under complex distribution by mapping the input space to a high-dimensional feature space. Some recognition algorithms such as the kernel principal components analysis, kernel Fisher discriminant, generalized discriminant analysis, and kernel direct LDA have been developed in the last five years. The experimental results show that the kernel-based method is a good and feasible approach to tackle the pose and illumination variations. One of the crucial factors in the kernel approach is the selection of kernel parameters, which highly affects the generalization capability and stability of the kernel-based learning methods. In view of this, we propose an eigenvalue-stability-bounded margin maximization (ESBMM) algorithm to automatically tune the multiple parameters of the Gaussian radial basis function kernel for the kernel subspace LDA (KSLDA) method, which is developed based on our previously developed subspace LDA method. The ESBMM algorithm improves the generalization capability of the kernel-based LDA method by maximizing the margin maximization criterion while maintaining the eigenvalue stability of the kernel-based LDA method. An in-depth investigation on the generalization performance on pose and illumination dimensions is performed using the YaleB and CMU PIE databases. The FERET database is also used for benchmark evaluation.
