Accurate medium- and long-term runoff prediction models play crucial guiding roles in regional water resources planning and management. However, due to the significant variation in and limited amount of annual runoff sequence samples, it is difficult for the conventional machine learning models to capture its features, resulting in inadequate prediction accuracy. In response to the difficulties in leveraging the advantages of machine learning models and limited prediction accuracy in annual runoff forecasting, firstly, the variational mode decomposition (VMD) method is adopted to decompose the annual runoff series into multiple intrinsic mode function (IMF) components and residual sequences, and the spectral clustering (SC) algorithm is applied to classify and reconstruct each IMF. Secondly, an annual runoff prediction model based on the adaptive particle swarm optimization–long short-term memory network (APSO-LSTM) model is constructed. Finally, with the basis of the APSO-LSTM model, the decomposed and clustered IMFs are predicted separately, and the predicted results are integrated to obtain the ultimate annual runoff forecast results. By decomposing and clustering the annual runoff series, the non-stationarity and complexity of the series have been reduced effectively, and the endpoint effect of modal decomposition has been effectively suppressed. Ultimately, the expected improvement in the prediction accuracy of the annual runoff series based on machine learning models is achieved. Four hydrological stations along the upper reaches of the Fen River in Shanxi Province, China, are studied utilizing the method proposed in this paper, and the results are compared with those obtained from other methods. The results show that the method proposed in this article is significantly superior to other methods. Compared with the APSO-LSTM model and the APSO-LSTM model based on processed annual runoff sequences by single VMD or Wavelet Packet Decomposition (WPD), the method proposed in this paper reduces the RMSE by 40.95–80.28%, 25.26–57.04%, and 15.49–40.14%, and the MAE by 24.46–80.53%, 16.50–59.30%, and 16.58–41.80%, in annual runoff prediction, respectively. Encouraging the use of conservation tillage technology is a highly effective approach to safeguarding soil health, improving the environment, and promoting sustainable agricultural development. With the mounting concerns surrounding climate change, developing conservation tillage methods that facilitate sustainable agricultural growth has become an imperative both in China and around the world. While it is widely recognized that adapting to climate change is crucial in agriculture, there is limited research on evaluating the risks, discovering resilience, measuring farmers' perceptions on climate change, and exploring how tillage technology can be adjusted in the context of small-scale farming in China to foster sustainable development. Using research data from smallholder farmers in the Shaanxi and Shanxi provinces of China, this paper aims to explore the impact of climate change perceptions on farmers' adoption of conservation tillage technologies based on an ordered Probit model. We found that farmers tend to refrain from embracing conservation tillage technology due to the presence of unclear and conflicting perceptions regarding climate change. Focus on short-term profitability and inadequate preparation hinder them from prioritizing adaptation. We recognized several measures that could help farmers adapt and thrive within the agricultural sector. Furthermore, we have validated the need for self-system moderation in promoting farmers' adoption of conservation tillage technology. By utilizing such tools and resources, farmers can comprehend the gravity of climate change's impact on agricultural productivity and, more importantly, channel their efforts towards fortifying resilience to extreme weather conditions and long-term climate risks, thus fortifying agricultural sustainability. The topographic map plays a very important role in economic construction. In the process of drawing topographic maps, different symbols represent different ground objects, but the symbols representing complex ground objects are often complicated and difficult to create. Moreover, the creation process of complex map symbols can seriously affect the efficiency of topographic map production. Therefore, this paper proposes an automatic derivation method for creation of complex map symbols in a topographic map. The data used are new geographic entity data under the background of Chinese new fundamental surveying and mapping situation. Firstly, four derivation modes of complex map symbols are summarized, including feature-point mode, centroid mode, feature-line mode, and parallel-line mode; then, using the four modes singly or in combination, the complex map symbols of the topographic map are directly derived from the geographic entity data based on programming, and the topographic map cartographic result is obtained automatically. Finally, some topographic maps for Shanxi Province, China, is used for the validation of the creation of map symbols. The experimental results show that the proposed method can automatically derive the complex map symbols of the topographic map, greatly improving production efficiency and obtaining a good visualization effect. The accurate prediction of coal structure is important to guide the exploration and development of coal reservoirs. Most prediction models are interpreted for a single sensitive coal seam, and the selection of sensitive parameters is correlated with the coal structure, but they ignore the interactions between different attributes. Part of it introduces the concept of the geological strength index (GSI) of coal rocks in order to achieve a multi-element macroscopic description and quantitative characterization of coal structure; however, the determination of coal structure involves some uncertainties among the properties of coal, such as lithology, gas content and tectonic fracture, due to their complex nature. Fuzzy inference systems provide a knowledge discovery process to handle uncertainty. The study shows that a type-2 fuzzy inference system (T2-FIS) with multi-attribute fusion is used to effectively fuse pre-stack and post-stack seismic inversion reservoir parameters and azimuthal seismic attribute parameters in order to produce more accurate prediction results for the Hengling block in the Shanxi area. The fuzzy set rules generated in this paper can provide a more reliable prediction of coal structure in the GSI system. This paper presents the on-site monitoring of a medium–long highway tunnel constructed above a goaf of a multi-layer coal seam, in order to evaluate and maintain safety during operation. The case study of the Tianzimiao medium–long highway tunnel in Shanxi province was conducted above a goaf of a multi-layer coal seam with typical geological and engineering conditions in China, where a total of four coal seams (seam no. 3, 8, 12, and 15) were mined out with a total thickness of up to 11 m. Methods including data collection, engineering geological survey, drilling, geophysical prospecting, testing, and on-site monitoring were adopted, and a geo-mechanical model was established to conduct the research. Stratified monitoring was applied to investigate the individual settlement and deformation of the four layers of the goaf below, and a prediction of the possible deformation in tunnel floor ground was made based on the stratified measurements. The settlement of the tunnel sidewall, the internal stress in the fractured zone of the surrounding rock, and the deformation above the tunnel entrance were also monitored, and the monitoring data were compared with the numerical simulation results for the safety evaluation of the tunnel. The results show that the current tunnel deformation values and trend are both within the safety scope of the evaluation and prediction. The stability evaluation method for the multi-layer goaf used in this paper and the long-term on-site monitoring and timely feedback during operation is helpful to ensure the safe use of the tunnels above the goaves of multi-layer thick coal seams. Solar energy is considered one of the most hopeful alternative sources to avoiding dependence on fossil fuels, and it does not cause any air pollution. GIS-based solar energy potential evaluation is mainly focused on regional scale; further, more solar energy potential evaluation with building scale is calculated through observation data and mathematical model. Therefore, in this paper, a GIS-based joint solar energy potential evaluation is developed to evaluate the distributed photovoltaic potential and centralized photovoltaic potential. Shanxi province in China, which has abundant coal resources, is used as the study area. The raster grid scale is used as the minimum research scale, which could not only deal with the distributed photovoltaic potential but could also calculate the centralized photovoltaic potential. The obtained results indicate that the developed method could effectively deal with problems associated with the distributed photovoltaic potential and centralized photovoltaic potential in the raster grid scale. As one of the main fossil fuels globally, coal can be enriched with a variety of critical metal elements in specific geological conditions. This paper investigates the mineral compositions and concentrations of major and minor element oxides and trace elements in the No. 9 coal from the Xinyuan mine of the northern Qinshui coalfield, China, and discusses the modes of occurrence and enrichment mechanisms of critical metal elements such as Li, Ga, Th and REY. The mineral compositions of the No. 9 coal are primarily represented by clay minerals and quartz, with a small amount of calcite, siderite, anatase, etc. The major element oxides in the No. 9 coal are dominated by SiO2 and Al2O3. Compared with world hard coal, the No. 9 coal of the Xinyuan mine is rich in Li (CC = 8.00) and Th, slightly enriched with Pb, Sc, Ga, Y, La, Ce, Tb, Dy, Er, Yb and Hg, and depleted in Mn, Co, Ni, Rb, Cs and Tl. The critical metal elements such as Li, Ga, Th and REY that enriched No. 9 coal mainly occur in aluminum silicates. The genetic type of the critical metal elements in the No. 9 coal from the Xinyuan mine is source rock-controlled type. The critical metal minerals and solutions from the source area were transported to the study area by the action of water. Coal seam mining in the gully area easily causes ground cracks and even induces landslides, which endanger the safety of mining areas. In this paper, combined with the mining conditions of a mining area in southern Shanxi Province, China, ground crack mapping, crack width dynamic monitoring, and the numerical simulation method are used to study the static and dynamic evolution law and the formation mechanism of ground cracks in the gully area. The research shows that ground cracks mainly include dynamic in-plane cracks and boundary cracks. The dynamic in-plane cracks show the characteristics of "opening first and closing later". The boundary cracks show the characteristics of "only opening and not closing". It is found that the closure of the dynamic in-plane cracks will decrease (compared with plain areas). The development of ground cracks experiences three stages: the initial formation stage, the dynamic development stage, and the gradually stable stage. The "goaf–surface" structure model and force chain arch structure model are established to more intuitively analyze the formation mechanism of ground cracks. Rural settlements are the carrier of farmers' life and rural industries. This paper introduces symbiosis theory to construct an analytical framework for the symbiosis between production land and living land in rural settlements, taking three villages in Shanxi, China as examples (secondary industry-led: Tian Village, tourism-led: Shuiyukou Village, multi-industry integration: Jiling Village). The results show that: (1) From 2010 to 2020, the compatibility and coupling coordination degree between production land and living land in Tian Village increased; the compatibility degree between production land and living land in Shuiyukou Village decreased slightly, and the coupling coordination increased significantly. In Jiling Village, the compatibility between production land and living land decreased, and the coupling coordination showed an increasing trend. (2) From 2010 to 2020, the degree of symbiosis between production land and living land in the three Villages both showed an increasing trend, and the growth of symbiosis degree was mainly caused by the growth of coupling coordination. (3) In 2010–2015 and 2015–2020, the symbiotic growth between production land and living land in Tian Village was driven by farmers' demand and social economy, respectively. The dominant driving factor for Shuiyukou Village in these two periods was resource endowment. Jiling Village was driven by social economy and regional policies, respectively. Architectural heritage is a lively carrier of historical development, as well as providing a valuable resource for human society. Recently, however, the longevity of architectural heritage has been influenced and even threatened by natural and human factors. Furthermore, the future remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to develop a comprehensive method, namely, digital protection and utilization based on knowledge visualization (DPUKV), to protect and utilize architectural heritage. The most important problem to solve involves transforming digital protection data into a digital inheritance culture. We constructed a technical framework of knowledge acquisition, knowledge reconstruction, knowledge innovation, and knowledge management using qualitative and vertical methods to form hierarchical digital resources of architectural heritage. In particular, the knowledge reconstruction converted tacit knowledge of architectural heritage into explicit knowledge via visualization technology, providing research materials for more scholars. In knowledge innovation, architectural heritage culture was excavated and inherited through knowledge graphs, digital displays, and cultural creation with virtual reality, augmented reality, etc. Furthermore, this method was validated over four years via architectural heritage in China as case studies. In this paper, the buildings of Qinglian Temple in Shanxi, China, are discussed in detail as a case study. The results indicated that this method was effective for preserving architectural heritage and is suitable for other cultural heritage. The development of introduced pulse varieties has made valuable contributions to the development of the global agricultural industry, and China is one of the largest pulse producers in the international market. A special type of pulse, the red kidney bean, has made a major contribution to improving the rural economy. Taking Kelan County, Shanxi Province, as an example, this paper expounds on the formation of the kidney bean industry and its impact on local development. The existing research used a qualitative case study (QCS) method to examine the driver and impact of kidney beans in the agricultural industry. This study found that (1) the development of the kidney bean industry has benefited from its adherence to a market demand-oriented strategy, focusing on breeding and retaining excellent varieties, and vigorously supporting the construction of technical systems and the cultivation of the main body of the industrial chain. Developing new varieties, creating brands, and industrial integration are the key driving forces for development. (2) The kidney bean industry promotes local development by increasing farmers' income, forming a more complete kidney bean supply chain, highlighting the brand effect, and promoting sustainable rural development. This study suggests that disease-resistant and mechanized-adapted varieties need to be developed in the future. Featured Application: Environmental protection in mining subsidence areas. The surface discontinuous deformation caused by coal mining has great damage to the ecological environment and threatens the safety of human lives. Focusing on the problem of discontinuous deformation (ground fissures and collapsed pits) in mining areas with a thick loess and thin bedrock, this paper uses a coal panel in southern Shanxi in China as research background, and uses field investigation, theoretical analysis and the particle flow code 2D (PFC2D) numerical simulation method to study the movement of overburden and discontinuous ground deformation of mining areas with a thick loess layer and a thin bedrock. The results show that with the continual advance of the working face, the failure of the overlying rock, the changing of force chain shape and the development of cracks under this geological and mining condition have their unique rules. This study analyzes the law of movement of overburden in coal seam mining, explains why discontinuous deformation of the surface occurs in case of a thick loess layer and thin bedrock, and provides reference for the prediction of fracture development under the same geological conditions and the application of the PFC2D in coal seam mining in different geological conditions. Strong soil erosion and increasing human activities have made Loess Plateau areas ecologically fragile regions. Constructing the ecological security pattern (ESP) is imperative to maintain their ecosystem functions and sustainable development. However, it is still challenging to establish the ESP in such an unstable and scattered ecological environment. In this study, we take Shanxi Province, which suffers severe ecological problems in Loess Plateau areas, as an example to construct the ESP in a pattern of "source-resistance-corridor". The proposed methods include the following steps: (1) potential ecological sources are selected with important ecosystem functions based on contributions of soil and water conservation, habitat quality, and carbon storage; (2) ecological sources are determined by considering core areas at the landscape scale based on morphological spatial pattern analysis (MSPA) along with stability based on dynamic assessment on previous sources; (3) the comprehensive resistance surface is constructed by multiple resistance factors and remotely sensed nighttime light data; (4) ecological corridors are simulated and extracted based on circuit theory. As a result, the proposed ESP in our study area mainly includes 13,592 km2 of ecological sources, 8519.64 km of ecological corridors, and 277 ecological nodes. Meanwhile, an ecological framework of "two axes, three belts, and three zones" was proposed based on the optimization and reorganization of ecological components within the ESP. There is a huge reservation of loess in the Shanxi mining area in China, which has great potential for preparing supplementary cementitious materials. Loess was modified via mechanical and thermal activation, and the pozzolanic activity was evaluated using an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES). Moreover, the workability of grouting materials prepared using modified loess was assessed. The experimental results revealed that the number of ultrafine particles gradually increased with the grinding time, enhancing the grouting performance. The coordination number of Al decreased upon the breakage of the Al–O–Si bond post-calcination at 400 °C, 550 °C, 700 °C, and 850 °C. Moreover, the breaking of the Si–O covalent bond produced Si-phases, and the pozzolanic activity of loess increased. Furthermore, the modified loess was hydrated with different cement proportions. With increasing grinding time, the overall setting time increased until the longest time of 14.5 h and the fluidity of the slurry decreased until the lowest fluidity of 9.7 cm. However, the fluidity and setting time decreased with increasing calcination temperature. The lowest values were 12.03 cm and 10.05 h. With the increase in pozzolanic activity, more ettringite was produced via hydration, which enhanced the mechanical properties. The maximum strength of the hydrated loess after grinding for 20 min reached 16.5 MPa. The strength of the hydrated loess calcined at 850 °C reached 21 MPa. Bromus japonicus is a common monocot weed that occurs in major winter wheat fields in the Huang–Huai–Hai region of China. Pyroxsulam is a highly efficient and safe acetolactate synthase (ALS)-inhibiting herbicide that is widely used to control common weeds in wheat fields. However, B. japonicus populations in China have evolved resistance to pyroxsulam by different mutations in the ALS gene. To understand the resistance distribution, target-site resistance mechanisms, and cross-resistance patterns, 208 B. japonicus populations were collected from eight provinces. In the resistant population screening experiment, 59 populations from six provinces showed different resistance levels to pyroxsulam compared with the susceptible population, of which 17 B. japonicus populations with moderate or high levels of resistance to pyroxsulam were mainly from the Hebei (4), Shandong (4) and Shanxi (9) Provinces. Some resistant populations were selected to investigate the target site-resistance mechanism to the ALS-inhibiting herbicide pyroxsulam. Three pairs of primers were designed to amplify the ALS sequence, which was assembled into the complete ALS sequence with a length of 1932 bp. DNA sequencing of ALS revealed that four different ALS mutations (Pro-197-Ser, Pro-197-Thr, Pro-197-Phe and Asp-376-Glu) were found in 17 moderately or highly resistant populations. Subsequently, five resistant populations, QM21-41 with Pro-197-Ser, QM20-8 with Pro-197-Thr and Pro-197-Phe, and QM21-72, QM21-76 and QM21-79 with Asp-376-Glu mutations in ALS genes, were selected to characterize their cross-resistance patterns to ALS inhibitors. The QM21-41, QM20-8, QM21-72, QM21-76 and QM21-79 populations showed broad-spectrum cross-resistance to pyroxsulam, mesosulfuron–methyl and flucarbazone–sodium. The possible influence of global climate changes on agricultural production is becoming increasingly significant, necessitating greater attention to improving agricultural production in response to temperature rises and precipitation variability. As one of the main winter wheat-producing areas in China, the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of precipitation, accumulated temperature, and actual yield and climatic yield of winter wheat during the growing period in Shanxi Province were analysed in detail. With the utilisation of daily meteorological data collected from 12 meteorological stations in Shanxi Province in 1964–2018, our study analysed the change in winter wheat yield with climate change using GIS combined with wavelet analysis. The results show the following: (1) Accumulated temperature and precipitation are the two most important limiting factors among the main physical factors that impact yield. Based on the analysis of the ArcGIS geographical detector, the correlation between the actual yield of winter wheat and the precipitation during the growth period was the highest, reaching 0.469, and the meteorological yield and accumulated temperature during this period also reached its peak value of 0.376. (2) The regions with more suitable precipitation and accumulated temperature during the growth period of winter wheat in the study area had relatively high actual winter wheat yields. Overall, the average actual yield of the entire region showed a significant increasing trend over time, with an upward trend of 47.827 kg ha−1 yr−1. (3) The variation coefficient of winter wheat climatic yield was relatively stable in 2008–2018. In particular, there were many years of continuous reduction in winter wheat yields prior to 2006. Thereafter, the impact of climate change on winter wheat yields became smaller. Simple Summary: Caprine arthritis encephalitis is an infectious disease caused by the caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV). This virus can impair the quality of goat's milk, lamb, and other goat products. Most goats are latently infected with this virus and become long-term carriers, so the development of a rapid and accurate diagnostic method is necessary. Therefore, we constructed a TaqMan real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assay and used it to detect CAEV in sheep in eastern China. We found that the prevalence of CAEV infection in sheep in eastern China was 0.77%. This method yields positive results when testing positive references and negative results when testing negative controls or other viruses. The consistency of these results was confirmed through repeating the experiment multiple times. It demonstrated excellent sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility and holds great promise for its potential application in clinical and field samples in the future. Caprine arthritis encephalitis is an infectious disease caused by the caprine arthritis encephalitis virus that infects goats, sheep, and other small ruminants. An outbreak of CAEV could be extremely harmful to the goat farming industry and could cause severe economic losses. We designed specific primers and probes for the gag gene and established a TaqMan real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction assay. This method's correlation coefficient (R2) was >0.999, and the sensitivity of the assay to the plasmid-carried partial gag gene was approximately 10 copies/µL, 1000 times higher than that of conventional PCR. No specific fluorescence was detected for other sheep viruses. Using this method, we tested 776 asymptomatic sheep blood samples and 4 neurodegenerative sheep brain samples from six farms in eastern China, and the positivity rate was 0.77% (6/780). The gag gene was partially sequenced in the three positive samples and compared with the sequences from other representative strains in GenBank. The results revealed that all three strains belonged to the B1 subtype and were most closely related to the strains from Shanxi and Gansu, previously isolated in China, with their homology ranging from 97.7% to 98.9%. These results suggest that the designed RT-qPCR assay can be used to detect subclinical CAEV in sheep and that the virus is still present in eastern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The formation and evolution mechanisms of complex types and scales of marine–continental transitional shale pores are still indefinite, restricting the accurate evaluation of shale reservoir and the effective evaluation of coal-bearing marine–continental transitional shale gas resource quantity. Considering the Shanxi shale in Ordos basin of China as the research object, combining the FE-SEM images and petrophysical analysis, high-pressure mercury intrusion porosimetry, and CO2 and N2 adsorption–desorption experiments, the structure characteristics and differential evolution mechanisms of multiscale and multitype of coal-bearing shale pores were discussed. The results show that coal-bearing marine–continental transitional shales are rich in clay minerals and organic matters (OMs). Pores developed within organic matters, clay, and brittle minerals of coal-bearing shale have decreasing porosity values. OM pores are directly related to micro- and mesopores, with high specific surface areas, while the porosity of inorganic pores increases with the increasing pore diameter. The porosity of all pores shows a positive relationship with permeability, which changes periodically with the increase in maturity. Coal-bearing shale pores are mainly plate- and ink bottle-shaped, with multimodal pore size distributions. Controlled by both diagenesis and hydrocarbon generation, the evolution of coal-bearing shale pores could be mainly divided into four stages. Furthermore, the pore evolution model of coal-bearing marine–continental transitional shale was preliminarily constructed. This study would enhance the understanding of reservoir evolution of the coal-bearing shale and provide useful information for the assessment and evaluation of reservoir capacity. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is an important crop grown worldwide as a food and fodder crop owing to its potential nutritional and feed values. High-efficiency herbicide varieties is crucial to achieving efficient weeding and ensuring successful foxtail millet production. Herbicides affect several morphological and physiological indicators of foxtail millet. In this study we aimed to evaluate the damage caused by herbicides, improve their effectiveness, and select indicators that accurately reflect herbicide resistance in foxtail millet. Jingu 21, which has the largest planting area in Shanxi province and even the whole of China, is selected as the experimental material to be sown in the field in 2022. A total of 31 herbicides were applied, and 21 traits, including morphological, physiological, and yield-component traits, were measured to assess millet resistance. Principal component analysis was employed to transform these 21 conventional traits into seven independent and comprehensive indexes. These indexes were screened using regression analysis, resulting in the selection of the following indicators: the surface area of the second leaf from the top, peroxidase activity, catalase activity, malondialdehyde content, chlorophyll (a + b), grain weight per ear, and yield. Through membership function and cluster analyses, the resistance of Jingu 21 to 31 herbicides was divided into five categories: extremely weakly resistant, weakly resistant, moderately resistant, strongly resistant, and extremely strongly resistant. Air pollutants emitted by industries can significantly affect local air quality and jeopardize human health, and the study of the boundary layer thermodynamic structure and diffusion capacity over industrial plants can be beneficial for the improvement of corporate air pollution control measures. The continuous high temporal and spatial resolution monitoring of the boundary layer structure (thermal, dynamic, and material) by advanced remote sensing instruments over a single strong industrial source (steel plant) in Shanxi Province, China, from May to June 2021 revealed the boundary layer characteristics under the influence of a single strong local anthropogenic influence. Strong nocturnal temperature inversions and grounded temperature inversions were prone to occur over industrial sources. The local wind field was characterized by significant daily variations, with the whole-layer airflow during the daytime dominated by southwesterly winds. At night, under the influence of radiation, topography, and surface, the airflow was dominated by easterly winds with low speeds (less than 2 m/s) in the low altitude range of 100 m, while the wind direction was still dominated by southwesterly winds with higher speeds in the altitude of 100 m. In addition, the average atmospheric diffusion capacity increased significantly with height in the 500 m altitude range, with an increase in rate of about 2~3 times/50 m, and continued to show a discontinuous increasing trend above 500 m. Combined with the wind direction and wind speed contours, it can be seen that the pollutants can be effectively dispersed at a height of 100 m. The thermal and turbulent boundary layer heights were highly consistent, and the material boundary layer height was significantly higher than the thermal and turbulent boundary layer heights during the daytime when convection was strong. In Shanxi Province, China, concrete foundations of substations are widely exposed to environments with sulfate erosion, which results in severe damage. There are various avenues to enhance sulfate resistance, and one promising approach involves optimizing high-performance water reducers. Chain extender, which is an integral component of a water reducer, serves as a pore-blocking agent to effectively counter sulfate erosion. This study delves into the impact of a chain extender in the water reducer on the sulfate resistance and adaptability of ordinary concrete. The assessment begins with gauging the sensitivity of concrete to sulfate erosion, utilizing a 0–1 scoring method. Comparable conditions are maintained, allowing for a direct comparison between concrete with and without chain extender based on predefined criteria. A score of 1 denotes superior performance, while a score of 0 indicates a poorer performance. Following the evaluation of each criterion, scores are aggregated by the water reducer type, with higher scores signaling superior adaptability. The findings highlight that chain extender enhances the internal porosity of concrete, resulting in a more compact microstructure, heightened impermeability, and improved resistance to sulfate erosion. Its influence on mixture performance, however, is marginal. From an erosion product standpoint, using the semi-immersion method, chemical erosion predominates in the immersion zone, while both chemical and physical erosion are observed in the alternate wet–dry zone. Employing a 0–1 scoring method, Water Reducer 3 (with chain extender) scores 20 points, whereas Water Reducer 3#–1 (without chain extender) scores 4 points. Taking into consideration all factors, the chain extender demonstrates excellent adaptability to ordinary concrete. To validate the effectiveness of the 0–1 scoring method, it is applied to assess fly ash and slag double-blended concrete. Coal gangue is a solid waste emitted during coal production. Coal gangue is deployed adjacent to mining land and has characteristics similar to those of the soils of these areas. Coal gangue–soil ecosystems provide habitats for a rich and active bacterial community. However, co-existence networks and the functionality of soil and coal gangue bacterial communities have not been studied. Here, we performed Illumina MiSeq high-throughput sequencing, symbiotic network and statistical analyses, and microbial phenotype prediction to study the microbial community in coal gangue and soil samples from Shanxi Province, China. In general, the structural difference between the bacterial communities in coal gangue and soil was large, indicating that interactions between soil and coal gangue are limited but not absent. The bacterial community exhibited a significant symbiosis network in soil and coal gangue. The co-occurrence network was primarily formed by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. In addition, BugBase microbiome phenotype predictions and PICRUSt bacterial functional potential predictions showed that transcription regulators represented the highest functional category of symbiotic bacteria in soil and coal gangue. Proteobacteria played an important role in various processes such as mobile element pathogenicity, oxidative stress tolerance, and biofilm formation. Illegal mining is one of the biggest problems in many coal mines. With the rapid development of the economy, driven by huge economic benefits, some outlaws illegally exploit mineral resources without a mining license, which is destructive and a potential safety hazard. In order to avoid inspection by law enforcement officials, some outlaws, regardless of the cost or risk, privately and surreptitiously excavate coal mines in self-built houses. The coal resources they excavate are shallow coal resources. Because surface buildings can maintain strong and stable radar scattering characteristics over a long time series, in this study, we combined PS-InSAR technology and high-resolution optical remote sensing to extract the subsidence information of surface buildings corresponding to PS point sets and analyzed their spatiotemporal characteristics. Finally, we developed a fast and accurate method for detecting suspected illegal mining sites from building subsidence information over a larger area. We also carried out a case study using Shandi Village, a suburb of Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, China, as our research object. QuickBird-2, WorldView-2 data, and 20 PALSAR scenes were selected for the experimental research, and two illegal mining sites were detected from 29 December 2006 to 9 January 2011. By comparing our results with previous investigation data, it was found that the accuracy rate reached 40% in local areas, and the detection rate reached 66.67%. Foxtail millet (Setaria italica L.) is a critical grain with high nutritional value and the potential for increased production in arid and semiarid regions. The foxtail millet value chain can be upgraded only by ensuring its comprehensive quality. Thus, samples were collected from different production areas in Shanxi province, China, and compared in terms of quality traits. We established a quality evaluation system utilizing multivariate statistical analysis. The results showed that the appearance, nutritional content, and culinary value of foxtail millet produced in different ecological regions varied substantially. Different values of amino acids (DVAACs), alkali digestion values (ADVs), and total flavone content (TFC) had the highest coefficients of variation (CVs) of 50.30%, 39.75%, and 35.39%, respectively. Based on this, a comprehensive quality evaluation system for foxtail millet was established, and the quality of foxtail millet produced in the five production areas was ranked in order from highest to lowest: Dingxiang > Zezhou > Qinxian > Xingxian > Yuci. The climate and ecological problems caused by excessive carbon dioxide emissions are attracting more and more attention, and the need for carbon reduction has reached a consensus. Carbon peak and carbon neutrality is a solemn commitment made by China to the world and a strategic arrangement to achieve economic and social transformation. This study focused on Shanxi Province, a base of power source and heavy chemical industry in China. Based on energy consumption data, carbon emission data set at the county level, land use data and socioeconomic data, we built a carbon ecological pressure index in order to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of the carbon footprint, carbon carrying capacity and carbon ecological security status of each county in Shanxi Province from 2000 to 2020. The results showed that: (1) the total carbon footprint of Shanxi Province increased, and the number of high carbon emission counties showed an increasing trend. The largest part of carbon footprint was coal. (2) The vegetation carbon-carrying capacity showed an increasing trend in general, and forest land was the main contributor to the carbon-carrying capacity. (3) The carbon deficit of Shanxi Province was greater than 0 and behaved as a carbon source. The carbon ecological security decreased from a relatively safe level to a general safe level. (4) The carbon ecological pressure index gradually increased. It was predicted that the carbon ecological security level of each county will remain basically unchanged by 2025 and some will still be at a carbon ecological insecurity level. In general, the carbon ecological pressure index of some counties was still large. It is necessary to strengthen the use of clean energy, optimize the industrial structure and increase the carbon sink of forest land in order to reduce carbon emissions and increase the carbon sink, so as to ensure carbon ecological security and realize the goal of a low-carbon economy. Pseudorabies virus (PRV) variants have caused substantial economic losses in the swine industry in China since 2011. To surveil the genetic variation in PRV field strains, here, two novel variant strains of PRV were isolated from Shanxi Province in central China and were designated SX1910 and SX1911. To identify the genetic characteristics of the two isolates, their complete genomes were sequenced, and phylogenetic analysis and sequence alignment revealed that field PRV variants have undergone genetic variations; notably, the protein-coding sequences UL5, UL36, US1 and IE180 exhibited extensive variation and contained one or more hypervariable regions. Furthermore, we also found that the glycoproteins gB and gD of the two isolates had some novel amino acid (aa) mutations. Importantly, most of these mutations were located on the surface of the protein molecule, according to protein structure model analysis. We constructed a mutant virus of SX1911 with deletion of the gE and gI genes via CRISPR/Cas9. When tested in mice, SX1911-ΔgE/gI-vaccinated mice were protected within a comparable range to Bartha-K61-vaccinated mice. Additionally, a higher dose of inactivated Bartha-K61 protected the mice from lethal SX1911 challenge, while a lower neutralization titer, higher viral load and more severe microscopic lesions were displayed in Bartha-K61-vaccinated mice. To clarify the impact of coking industry activities on the soil-groundwater Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) occurrence, a typical coking site in Shanxi Province was taken as the study area, and soil and groundwater samples were collected to analyze the pollution level, composition, and distribution of PAHs in soil-groundwater. The sources of PAHs in the study area were identified based on the positive matrix decomposition model (PMF); the health risks of PAHs were calculated based on the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk model from the Technical Guidelines for Risk Assessment of Soil Pollution for Construction Land (HJ 25.3-2019) and toxicity equivalent quantity (TEQ). The results showed that ∑PAHs of soil ranged from 0 to 6077.7 mg/kg, with an average value of 198.02 mg/kg; ∑PAHs of groundwater ranged from 0 to 18.30 mg/L, with an average value of 9.39 mg/L. In horizontal distribution, ∑PAH content and types in the tar processing area were much higher than those in the surrounding area, and PAHs might migrate to the southwest through infiltration; in vertical distribution, ∑PAH content reached a peak at 5 m underground. According to the PMF model results, four primary sources of ∑PAHs were identified, which were the coking production source (55.0%), coal and petroleum combustion source (22.6%), atmospheric deposition source (13.1%) and residents living source (9.3%). The total average ∑PAH carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks of soil in the study area were 7.05 × 10−6 and 0.695; the average TEQBaP−∑PAHs was 1.650 mg·TEQ/g; as for groundwater, they were 3.08 × 10−6 and 32.04; the average TEQBaP−∑PAHs was 9.390 μg·TEQ/L, indicating that PAHs both in soil and groundwater had potential health risks. Soil microorganisms play vital roles in ecosystem functions, and soil microbial communities might be affected by heavy metal contamination caused by the anthropogenic activities associated with the coal-based industry. This study explored the effects of heavy metal contamination on soil bacterial and fungal communities surrounding different coal-based industrial fields (the coal mining industry, coal preparation industry, coal-based chemical industry, and coal-fired power industry) in Shanxi province, North China. Moreover, soil samples from farmland and parks away from all the industrial plants were collected as references. The results showed that the concentrations of most heavy metals were greater than the local background values, particularly for arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg). There were significant differences in soil cellulase and alkaline phosphatase activities among sampling fields. The composition, diversity, and abundance of soil microbial communities among all sampling fields were significantly different, particularly for the fungal community. Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Acidobacteria were the predominant bacterial phyla, while Ascomycota, Mortierellomycota, and Basidiomycota dominated the studied fungal community in this coal-based industrially intensive region. A redundancy analysis, variance partitioning analysis, and Spearman correlation analysis revealed that the soil microbial community structure was significantly affected by Cd, total carbon, total nitrogen, and alkaline phosphatase activity. This study profiles the basic features of the soil physicochemical properties, the multiple heavy metal concentrations, and the microbial communities in a coal-based industrial region in North China. Simple Summary: Phytoseiid mites are widely distributed on plants and in soil; they can prey on many phytophagous mites and pests and play an important role in biological control programs. The genus Neoseiulus Hughes is one of the largest genera within the Phytoseiidae family, comprising 14.6% of the family's species worldwide. At present, there are few reports investigating Neoseiulus from Shanxi Province; however, the study on the species diversity of Neoseiulus is helpful to enrich the resource species bank of Phytoseiidae and provide more detailed basis for species identification. We report the discovery of five additional species in Shanxi, and redescribed four of them. Neoseiulus paraki (Ehara) is recorded for the first time in China, and N. neoreticuloides (Liang and Hu) is considered a new junior synonym of N. bicaudus (Wainstein). We provide a key to assist in the identification of the known species of Neoseiulus in Shanxi. The genus Neoseiulus in Shanxi Province is reviewed and seven species are recorded from the province. Four of these are redescribed and detailed taxonomic information are provided. Neoseiulus paraki (Ehara) is recorded for the first time in China and Neoseiulus neoreticuloides (Liang and Hu) is considered a new junior synonym of Neoseiulus bicaudus (Wainstein). Regions located on the Chinese Loess Plateau are sensitive to changes in the Asian monsoon because they are on the edge of the monsoon region. Based on six 230Th experiments and 109 sets of stable isotope data of LH36 from Lianhua Cave, Yangquan City, Shanxi Province, we obtained a paleoclimate record with an average resolution of 120 years from 54.5 to 41.1 ka BP during the MIS3 on the Chinese Loess Plateau. Both the Hendy test and the replication test indicated an equilibrium fractionation of stable isotopes during the stalagmite deposition. Comparison with four other independently-dated, high-resolution stalagmite δ13C records between 29°N and 41°N in the Asian monsoon region shows that the stalagmite δ13C records from different caves have good reproducibility during the overlapped growth period. We suggest that speleothem δ13C effectively indicates soil CO2 production in the overlying area of the cave, reflecting changes in the cave's external environment and in the Asian summer monsoon. Five millennial-scale Asian summer monsoon intensification events correspond to the Dansgaard–Oeschger 10–14 cycles recorded in the Greenland ice core within dating errors, and the weak monsoon processes are closely related to stadials in the North Atlantic. The spatial consistency of stalagmite δ13C records in China suggests that the Asian summer monsoon and the related regional ecological environment fluctuations sensitively respond to climate changes at northern high latitudes through sea-air coupling on the millennial timescale. The gas in a coal seam is a clean energy source, but it is also the main cause of gas accidents during the mining of mineral resources. There is a large pressure–relief gas influx in the upper and lower adjacent layers of 1211 working face in the Wanfeng Coal Mine in Jinhui, Shanxi Province, China. Based on the evolution law of overburden fractures, the collaborative pressure–relief gas extraction mode of "directional drilling in the gas-conducting fractured zone + staggered buried-pipe in the goaf" is innovatively proposed. The research results indicate that, under the influence of gas pressure gradient and buoyancy, a gas–concentration enrichment zone is formed at a distance of 10.8–24.1 m from the boundary of the mining layer. After optimizing the arrangement of roof directional-drilling layer and layer position, as well as the staggered distance of buried pipe drainage, the average gas-drainage rate reached 83.2% during the test working face, and the gas volume fraction in the upper corner was maintained below 0.7%. This mode can greatly improve the efficiency of mining mineral resources and gas energy utilization in short-distance coal seam groups, while solving the problem of gas accumulation in the upper corner caused by negative pressure of air flow during the mining process of mineral resources. Groundwater is a valuable water source for drinking and irrigation purposes in semiarid regions. Groundwater pollution may affect human health if it is not pretreated and provided for human use. This study investigated the hydrochemical characteristics driving groundwater quality for drinking and irrigation purposes and potential human health risks in the Xinzhou Basin, Shanxi Province, North China. More specifically, we first investigated hydrochemical characteristics using a descriptive statistical analysis method. We then classified the hydrochemical types and analyzed the evolution mechanisms of groundwater using Piper and Gibbs diagrams. Finally, we appraised the groundwater quality for drinking and irrigation purposes using the entropy water quality index (EWQI). We assessed the associated human health risks for different age and sex groups through drinking intake and dermal contact pathways. Overall, we found that (1) Ca-HCO3 and Ca·Mg-HCO3 were the dominant hydrochemical types and were mainly governed by rock weathering and water–rock interactions. (2) Based on the EWQI classifications, 67.74% of the groundwater samples were classified as medium quality and acceptable for drinking purpose. According to the values of sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and soluble sodium percentage (%Na), 90.32% of the samples were suitable for irrigation, while the remaining samples were unfit for irrigation because of the high salinity in the groundwater. (3) Some contaminants in the groundwater, such as NO3−, NO2− and F−, exceeded the standard limits and may cause potential risks to human health. To provide a comprehensive insight into the enrichment mechanism of gallium and indium in No. 9 coals, eighteen samples were collected from Anjialing mine, Ningwu Coalfield, Shanxi Province for coal petrological, mineralogical and geochemical analyses. The results suggested that Ga and In enrichment mainly hosted in the top horizons, with average concentration coefficients of 8.99 and 2.73 respectively, compared with the rest of horizons (2.46 for Ga and 1.69 for In). Source apportionment indicated that Ga and In were mainly derived from bauxite of Benxi Formation in Yinshan Oldland, while In could originate from felsic magmatic rocks in Yinshan Oldland as well. In addition, weak oxidation condition, medium to intensive weathering, transgression and input of terrestrial higher plants had positive effects on Ga and In enrichment. With the rapid expansion of emerging electronics manufacturing, Ga and In, of which potential risks on human health were neglected previously, were recently considered as hazardous elements. Therefore, this paper also discussed the potential pathways that these elements threatened human health. We suggested that potential risks on environment and human health caused by Ga and In enrichment in coals and coal-related products should be taken into account besides their economic value. Simple Summary: Pholcus is the most diverse spider genus in Pholcidae, and is widely distributed in the Palaearctic, Indo-Malayan, Afrotropical, and Australasian Regions. Previously, the Pholcus spiders have not been recorded from the Lüliang Mountains of North China. We undertook an expedition there for the first time. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data from four gene fragments (COI, H3, wnt, 28S) suggested that Pholcus from the Lüliang Mountains were grouped into nine well-supported clades. We adopted an integrative approach, including morphology and four methods of molecular species delimitation (ABGD, GMYC, bPTP, and BPP), to investigate species boundaries. Such analyses identified the nine clades as nine separate species, of which eight are new to science. All of them belong to the P. phungiformes species group. Spiders of the genus Pholcus were collected for the first time during an expedition to the Lüliang Mountains in Shanxi Province, North China. Phylogenetic analyses of DNA sequence data from COI, H3, wnt, and 28S genes allowed us to group them into nine well-supported clades. We used morphology and four methods of molecular species delimitation, namely Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery (ABGD), the Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent (GMYC), Bayesian Poisson Tree Processes (bPTP), and Bayesian Phylogenetics and Phylogeography (BPP), to investigate species boundaries. These integrative taxonomic analyses identified the nine clades as nine distinct species, comprising Pholcus luya Peng & Zhang, 2013 and eight other species new to science: Pholcus jiaocheng sp. nov., Pholcus linfen sp. nov., Pholcus lishi sp. nov., Pholcus luliang sp. nov., Pholcus wenshui sp. nov., Pholcus xiangfen sp. nov., Pholcus xuanzhong sp. nov., and Pholcus zhongyang sp. nov. The species occur in geographic proximity and show many morphological similarities. All of them belong to the P. phungiformes species group. ITS is the main component of industrial solid waste, of which there are about 2 billion metric tons in China. A large number of ITS not only occupy land resources and pollute the environment but also pose major security risks. This study, based on a road resurfacing project in Shanxi Province, China, focused on the "iron tailings sand (ITS) plus reclaimed inorganic binder stabilized aggregate (RAI)" solid waste treatment method, which uses special cementitious material to stabilize ITS and RAI as a new base course material and aims to replace new aggregates by 100% to apply in the renovation project through testing the road performances of the recycled mixture. Although it does not comply with the conventional grading range, the new ITS and RAI mixture (the recycled mixture) can achieve excellent compressive performance from the material composition, and it can meet different levels of design strength under various load conditions by adjusting the mixing ratio (ITS content can reach up to 70%). The pavement performance of the recycled mixture was compared with that of cement-stabilized aggregate (the traditional base course material), and it was evaluated by testing its anti-water damage, frost resistance (dry and wet freeze), shrinkage, and fatigue characteristics. A total of 380 mixtures were tested. The results showed that, at the same strength level, the anti-water damage and frost resistance properties of the recycled mixture were better than those of cement-stabilized aggregate, whereas its shrinkage and fatigue properties were inferior. For anti-water damage properties, the water stability coefficient of the recycled mixture is about 2%~5% higher than that of cement-stabilized aggregate. For the frost resistance property, the wet frost coefficient of the recycled mixture is about 10%~15% higher, and the dry frost coefficient is about 5%~10% higher. The dry shrinkage strain of the recycled mixture is about 50 × 10−6~300 × 10−6 higher than that of cement-stabilized aggregate, and the temperature shrinkage coefficient is about 10 × 10−6~20 × 10−6 higher. Thereafter, the reduction of carbon emissions in engineering applications per kilometer was compared between the recycled mixture and cement-stabilized aggregate. The engineering application in Shanxi Province shows that the carbon reduction is approximately 18.869 t of CO2. Dryland winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production plays an extremely important role in the southeast of the Loess Plateau. Planting patterns have great influence on improving soil water storage and yield, and should be matched with different seeding rates. In order to assess the effect of different sowing methods on the drought resistance and stable yield of dryland wheat, a field experiment was conducted in Wenxi County Dryland Wheat Experimental Base in Shanxi Province, China. In the current study, the effects of three planting techniques (drilling sowing, furrow sowing, and film-mulched sowing) and four seeding rates (150, 225, 300, and 375 kg ha−1) were examined on water storage, dry matter formation, yield, and water use efficiency (WUE). The results showed that furrow sowing (FS) and film-mulched sowing (FM) treatments increased soil water storage in the 0–300 cm soil layer at overwintering and jointing stages. In addition, FS and FM increased soil water consumption in the 0–300 cm soil layer from overwintering to maturity of wheat. Furthermore, FS and FM significantly increased the dry matter accumulation from the overwintering to the mature stage, promoted its accumulation in vegetative organs and translocation to grains after anthesis, viz., increased yield by 6.2% and 7.9%, and WUE by 4.6% and 5.3%, respectively, as compared with those of the drilling sowing (DS) treatments. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that grain yield had a significantly positive correlation with soil water storage at overwintering and jointing. Moreover, grain yield was significantly positively correlated with soil water consumption in the 0–300 cm soil layer from jointing to maturity. Additionally, the seeding rate of 150 kg ha−1 with FS could obtain higher WUE and grain yield. Mao Jian Tea (MJT) has been generally consumed as a digestive aid for more than a hundred years in the Shanxi province of China. However, determination of its efficacy still remains elusive. This study investigated the effect of Mao Jian Green Tea (MJGT) on gastrointestinal motility. The biphasic effects of the hydro extracts of MJGT on gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion of rats were identified in vivo; namely, the low (MJGT_L) and medium (MJGT_M) concentrations promoted gastrointestinal motility (p < 0.05), whereas the high concentration (MJGT_H) showed the opposite effect (p < 0.01). The expression levels of the gastric hormones, GAS, MTL and VIP (p < 0.05) were consistent with the gastrointestinal motility variation, with the exception of MTL in MJGT_H group (p > 0.01). Two flavonoids, eriodictyol (0.152 mg/mL) and luteolin (0.034 mg/mL), and the corresponding glycosides eriodictyol-7-O-glucoside (0.637 mg/mL) and luteolin-7-O-glucoside (0.216 mg/mL), dominated the hydro extracts identified by HPLC and UPLC-ESI-MS. These compounds can regulate the muscle strip contractions isolated from the gastrointestinal tissues. Additionally, the different concentrations also influenced the gut microbiota accordingly characterized by 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The MJGT_L boosted several probiotic bacteria, such as Muribaculaceae (1.77-fold), Prevotellaceae (1.85-fold) and Lactobacillaceae (2.47-fold), and suppressed the pathogenic species such as Staphylococcaceae (0.03-fold) that, conversely, was enriched in the MJGT_H group (1.92-fold). China is the largest producer and exporter of coke globally, which means that it is very important to understand the characteristics of air pollutants and carbon emissions from China's independent coking industry. This study was the first to establish a bottom-up inventory of the air pollutants and carbon emissions of China's independent coking industry during 2001–2018 based on continuous emission monitoring system online monitoring data and unit-based corporate information. Based on the developed emission inventory, four scenarios were established to analyze potential emissions reduction of air pollutants and carbon dioxide (CO2) in future. The emissions of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), sulfur dioxide (SO2), black carbon (BC) and organic carbon (OC) decreased by 62.11%, 63.41%, 72.85%, 63.41% and 63.41%, respectively. CO2, carbon monoxide (CO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions increased by 355.51%, 355.51%, 355.51% and 99.74%, respectively. In 2018, PM10, PM2.5, SO2, NOx, BC, OC, CO, VOCs and CO2 emissions were, respectively. 45.20, 16.91, 63.84, 117.71, 5.07, 5.92, 554.91, 1026.58 Gg, and 176.88 Tg. Shanxi province made the greatest contributions to the total emissions of air pollutants and CO2 from this industry by 25.01%. The emission source that contributed most to PM2.5 (SO2 and NOX) emissions was coke pushing (quenching and the coke oven chimney respectively) in 2018. Under the ULE scenario (2018–2035), PM2.5 and SO2 emissions will reduce by more than 30%. Under the PCP scenario, PM2.5 and SO2 emissions will reduce by more than 55%. Under the CBP scenario, CO2 emissions will peak at 197.99 Tg in 2025 and decrease to 70% of the peak in 2035. The results showed the emission characteristics of air pollutants and CO2, future emission with several scenarios and cooperative reduction potential in China's independent coking industry, which provides scientific support for the development of pollution control strategies. The accurate habitat suitability evaluation of forest species is vital for forest resource management and conservation. Therefore, the previously published thresholds of soil organic carbon (SOC) contents for the six main forest species were used to screen sample points in this study; the maximum entropy modeling (MaxEnt) was applied to predict the potential distribution of those species in Lvliang Mountain, Shanxi Province, China. The following results were derived: (1) the area under the curve (AUC) value of the MaxEnt model was 0.905, indicating the model results had high accuracy; (2) the main environmental factors affecting the woodlands were mean diurnal temperature range, solar radiation, population density and slope; (3) the model accurately depicted the most suitable areas for those species, namely Populus davidiana Dode (Malpighiales: Salicaceae), Betula platyphylla Sukaczev (Fagales: Betulaceae), Quercus wutaishanica Mayr (Fagales: Fagaceae), Platycladus orientalis (L.) Franco (Pinales: Cupressaceae), Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Kuzen. (Pinales: Pinaceae) and Pinus tabuliformis Carrière (Pinales: Pinaceae). This study has improved the representativeness of the samples based on prior knowledge to enhance the biological meaning and accuracy of the prediction results. Mining deformation of roof strata is the main cause of methane explosion, water inrush, and roof collapse accidents amid underground coal mining. To ensure the safety of coal mining, the distributed optical fiber sensor (DFOS) technology has been applied in the 150,313 working face by Yinying Coal Mine in Shanxi Province, north China to monitor the roof strata movement, so as to grasp the movement law of roof strata and make it serve for production. The optical fibers are laid out in the holes drilled through the overlying strata on the roadway roof and BOTDR technique is utilized to carry out the on-site monitoring. Prior to the on-site test, the coupling test of the fiber strain in the concrete anchorage, the calibration test of the fiber strain coefficient of the 5-mm steel strand (SS) fiber, and the test of the strain transfer performance of the SS fiber were carried out in the laboratory. The approaches for fiber laying-out in the holes and fiber's spatial positioning underground the coal mine have been optimized in the field. The indoor test results show that the high-strength SS optical fiber has a high strain transfer performance, which can be coupled with the concrete anchor with uniform deformation. This demonstrated the feasibility of SS fiber for monitoring strata movement theoretically and experimentally; and the law of roof strata fracturing and collapse is obtained from the field test results. This paper is a trial to study the whole process of dynamic movement of the deformation of roof strata. Eventually the study results will help Yinying Coal Mine to optimize mining design, prevent coal mine accidents, and provide detailed test basis for DFOS monitoring technique of roof strata movement. There is limited information available on the minerals and elements present in the Jurassic coals from Datong Coalfield. This paper investigates the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the Middle Jurassic coals from the Tongjialiang Mine using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and scanning electron microscopy in combination with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). No.12 coal is a low-medium volatile bituminous coal and is characterized by low ash yield content, low moisture content, and ultra-low sulfur content. Compared with Chinese coals, the Tongjialiang coals have slightly higher average percentages of MgO and P2O5, and lower average percentages of the other major oxides, including SiO2, TiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, CaO, MnO, Na2O, and K2O. Compared with the World hard coals, Be, Cr, Co, Ni, Ge, Sn, Ta, and W are slightly enriched in the Tongjialiang coals. The concentrations of Li, F, Sc, V, Cu, Ga, Se, Sr, Zr, Nb, Hf, Pb, Th, and U are close to the average values of the world's hard coals. The minerals in No.12 coal mainly include quartz, kaolinite, siderite, and ankerite, along with smaller amounts of pyrite, illite, calcite, and rutile. The formation of syngenetic siderite in No.12 coal is related to the weathering of biotite in the gneiss of the Yinshan Upland. The modes of occurrence of ankerite indicate that the coals may be affected by the injection of low temperature hydrothermal fluids. It is noteworthy that a portion of epigenetic ankerite may be a product of metasomatism between syngenetic siderite and the epigenetic Fe-Mg-Ca rich hydrothermal fluids. The ratios of Al2O3/TiO2, REY (rare earth elements and yittrium) enrichment patterns, the modes of occurrence of siderite and ankerite, as well as the enriched lithophile and siderophile elements indicate that the No.12 coal may have originated from the Yinshan Upland and may also have been influenced by low temperature hydrothermal fluids that might have circulated in the coal basin. To explore the history of the changes in monsoon precipitation and their driving mechanisms in the context of global warming, climatology studies using tree-ring stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) were carried out in Shanxi Province, China. Based on a tree-ring δ18O series from Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. on Heng Mountain, a 230-year June–July precipitation sequence from 1784 to 2013 AD was reconstructed that explained 45% of the total variance (44% after adjusting the degrees of freedom). The reconstructed sequence captured the characteristics of the variations in precipitation. Periods of drought occurred mainly in 1820–1840 AD, 1855–1865 AD, 1895–1910 AD, 1925–1930 AD, and 1970–1995 AD, and wet periods occurred mainly in 1880–1895 AD, 1910–1925 AD, and 1935–1960 AD. The dry and wet years in the precipitation reconstruction corresponded well to the years in which disaster events were documented in historical records. A spatial correlation analysis with Climatic Research Unit (CRU)-gridded precipitation data indicated that the reconstructed precipitation provided good regional representation and reflected large-scale June–July precipitation changes in northern China. In addition, the reconstructed precipitation sequence was also significantly correlated with the dry and wet index (DWI) and other tree-ring dry/wet reconstructions from the surrounding areas. The correlation between the reconstructed precipitation and the Asian monsoon index showed that the precipitation can indicate the intensity of the Asian summer monsoon. Moreover, a significant negative correlation was found between the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the reconstructed precipitation. At the decadal scale, the negative phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the positive phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) may co-promote summer precipitation in the study area. Research on land use change is helpful to better understand the processes and mechanisms of land use changes and provide a decision base for reasonable land development. However, studies on LUCC were mainly conducted for megalopolises and urban agglomerations in China, but there is a gap in the scholarly community when it comes to shrinking small cities where the population decreased sharply under the influence of the urban expansion of megacities. Hence, it is necessary to investigate the evolution rule of land use in these regions. This study takes Qishan County in Shanxi Province as the research subject and analyzes the land use change over the last 20 years with remote sensing technology. Comparing the two LUCC models of the CA-Markov Model and the LCM Model, an optimal model is used to predict and simulate land use change under three potential scenarios in 2030. The conclusions are stated as follows: (1) From 2000 to 2020, the cultivated land area increased originally and subsequently decreased, and forest land continued to decrease at a progressively slower speed. In contrast, the urban land area expanded significantly. (2) The comprehensive dynamic change in water land is the most significant, indicating that this is an unstable land resource in the region and more attention should be given to this matter. (3) The scenario of water area protection indicates that the inhibition of the transition of water areas can protect their vulnerable ecological environment without negatively impacting economic development. Furthermore, the ongoing focus on economic development in the region is related to the rapid disappearance of cultivated land, which is not an optimistic perspective for the area's ecosystem. The slag found in Hengdong Jiangxian County, Shanxi Province has been recognized by archaeologists as the earliest evidence of bloomery ironmaking in China. The slag was characterized and analyzed by chemical titration, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), and tescan integrated mineral analysis (TIMA). The smelting technology in ancient China was explored, combined with thermodynamic theory. The results of chemical titration shown that the total Fe was as high as 64.18%, which means that it was very difficult to produce iron on a large scale with the ancient bloomery ironmaking technology, consuming a lot of iron ore while producing very little iron. The distribution of FeO was relatively dispersed, while that of Fe2O3 particles was concentrated and large. The source of Fe2O3 in the slag can be roughly identified as the oxidized metallic iron, which could not be separated in the slag in the past. Tescan integrated mineral analysis (TIMA) images show that Fayalite and Wustite are the main phase forms in smelting slag. The existence of fayalite proves that the temperature of a slag system should reach the condition of liquid phase formation during the smelting process. Based on the characterization results, the metallurgical conditions of the slag at that time are inferred by FactSage7.1. The theoretical smelting temperature was between 1150 °C and 1200 °C. The fayalite and aluminosilicate in the slag had obvious displacement and inhomogeneity, which pointed to the forging temperature ranging from 1050 °C to 1100 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The enhancement of the ecological functions of forests through stand structure optimization is a key issue for high-quality forestry and its sustainable development on the Loess Plateau. In this study, fifty standard plots of Pinus tabuliformis Carr. forest were established in the Loess Plateau of western Shanxi, China. Eleven factors of the stand structure, three topographical factors, and four functional indices of the ecological function, including 20 sub-functional indices, were investigated and monitored. The study results indicated that the stand structure and topographical conditions could significantly affect the ecological functions of the Pinus tabuliformis forest, which was primarily reflected in the water-holding function, soil improvement function, and diversity function of understory plants, but had little effect on the function of reducing runoff and sediment yield on slope. We found that the stand density and uniform angle index could be used to achieve the optimal regulation of the stand structure to enhance the ecological functions of the Pinus tabuliformis forest. Overall, the optimization strategy for the stand structure of Pinus tabuliformis on the Loess Plateau should be to (1) determine the characteristics of the regulation target by understanding the stand structure and its ecological function characteristics through stand surveys on the altitude of the stand, stand density, uniform angle index of the individual trees in the sample plot, and average uniform angle index of the sample plot; (2) determine the optimization target by quantifying and analyzing the ecological functions of the stand, selecting a certain functional index as the optimization target, and specifying the degree of improvement in the functional index; and (3) substitute the optimization target and elevation of the stand into the corresponding stand structure optimization model and determine the regulation direction and regulation range of the stand density, uniform angle index, and specific stand structure regulation measures. Climate change has caused habitat fragmentation and reduced connectivity. The Fen River Basin in Shanxi Province, China is an important habitat for the central population of the brown-eared pheasant (BEP). The effects of climate change need to be considered in the conservation planning of BEP habitats. We used a species dispersion model to determine the BEP core habitat and graph theory to explore the connectivity of the BEP's main habitats. The pinch point areas of BEP dissemination were determined by circuit theory. Least-cost pathways were used to identify the critical corridors for BEP dissemination. A gap analysis was conducted to estimate the efficiency of BEP conservation measures. Under the future climate scenarios, BEP habitats decreased by between 54.69% and 97.63%, and the connectivity of the main habitats was reduced by a similar magnitude. The BEP core habitat shifted to the southwestern region under the influence of climatic conditions. Currently, 90.84% of the species' critical habitat remains unprotected. Due to climate change, the core habitat in the future was projected to differ from the current protected area. The spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of water and nitrogen in the soil profile are essential influencing factors that determine the development of crop root systems. The purpose of this study was to clarify the inter-row and inter-tree variability in soil moisture in the apple root zone, and to determine the effective root diameter ranges of apple trees that influence water and nitrogen absorption. The method used was a 2-year border irrigation experiment carried out in a traditional apple orchard in Zuncun, Shanxi Province, China. Dynamic variations in the soil moisture between trees within the row (perpendicular to the direction of border irrigation) and between rows (along the direction of border irrigation) were continuously measured from 2015 to 2016, and a specific soil profile was excavated to analyze the distribution characteristics of soil water, nitrogen, and roots with different diameters. The results showed obvious variations in soil moisture in the surface soil of 0–30 cm, and the soil moisture content between rows was 5% higher than that between trees within the row. The root length density in the soil between trees within the row was 33.5% higher than that in the soil between rows. Bivariate correlation analysis showed that the correlation between the root system and nitrogen and water was ranked from highest to lowest: total nitrogen (0.741) > nitrate nitrogen (−0.36) > soil moisture (−0.273). The correlation coefficient between trees within the row was higher than that between rows. Lower soil moisture between trees within the row resulted in increased root biomass and more active uptake activity between trees within the row. There were different significant correlations between the specific root diameter and the contents of soil water and nitrogen, showing that the 1.5 mm diameter roots correlated with the water content, whereas the 2.0 mm diameter roots correlated with the nitrogen content. Considering its clean and environmental characteristics, natural gas has gradually attracted attention from countries around the world. China's coal-to-gas project has significantly increased the country's demand for, and supply of, natural gas. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) has also been gradually promoted, owing to its advantages of easy storage and transportation. However, the natural gas liquefaction process includes multiple phases, and each phase generates substantial industrial pollutants, such as CO2, SO2, and NOx. Despite this, the resulting environmental impacts have not been quantitatively assessed. Therefore, based on the production process of a liquefaction plant in the Shanxi Province, China, in this study, the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model was used to analyze the pollutant discharge in the unit's natural gas liquefaction production process. By collecting data on the production capacity and composition reports of the eight major LNG-producing provinces, such as Henan, Sichuan, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Xinjiang, Shanxi, Ningxia, and Hebei, the total amount of pollutants discharged from the natural gas liquefaction process in China was estimated. Finally, the environmental impact of the natural gas liquefaction process was evaluated according to the results of the environmental impact of pollutants. Our study arrived at the following conclusions: (i) 93.60% of China's natural gas liquefaction output is concentrated in eight provinces; (ii) in terms of the unit's LNG production, the Global Warming Potential (GWP), Acidification Potential (AP), Eutrophication Potential (EP), Photochemical Ozone Creation Potential (POCP) and Dust Potential (DP) proportions of each province explained the gas composition of LNG production gas sources in each province; (iii) the environmental problems caused by natural gas liquefaction were different in each provinces. In addition, we suggested relevant policy recommendations. First, the formulation of LNG-related policies should consider environmental pollution produced during the liquefaction stage. Second, if the problem of pollutant discharge in the liquefaction of natural gas is properly solved, it will not only reduce environmental pollution, but also generate additional income. A survey was conducted to effectively investigate the characteristics of airborne particulate pollutants PM10 and PM2.5 during the peak tourist season at Mount Wutai Buddhism scenic spot, Shanxi, China. Characteristics of the PM10 and PM2.5 in Wu Ye Temple (core incense burners), Manjusri Temple (a traffic hub), Yang Bai Lin Village (a residential district), and Nan Shan Temple (located in a primitive forest district), were determined. The results showed that the PM10 concentration was more than 1.01-1.14 times higher than the threshold (50 μg/m³) of World Health Organization Air Quality Guidelines (2005), and the PM2.5 concentration was 1.75-2.70 times higher than the above standard (25 μg/m³). Particle size analysis indicated that the distribution of fine particulate matter in Wu Ye Temple ranged from 0 to 3.30 μm. In other sampling points, the fine particulate was mainly distributed in the range of 0-5.90 μm. The particulates in Wu Ye Temple were mainly characterized by spherical, rod-like, and irregular soot aggregates (PM10) and spherical particles of dust (PM2.5). Manjusri Temple and Yang Bai Lin Village predominantly exhibited irregular soil mineral particulate matter (PM10), and amorphous ultrafine soot particulate matter (PM2.5). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
