The process and mechanism of gold mineralization are frontier issues. The Dunbasitao deposit is the most important gold deposit discovered along the Armantai suture zone, East Junggar, NW China, which indicates the potential for future ore exploration in this area. Orebodies are mainly hosted in Lower Carboniferous Jiangbasitao Formation volcano-sedimentary rocks, and the ores are characterized by multistage pyrites. Based on microscopy and backscattered electron imaging studies, pyrites are classified into five types: the pre-ore framboidal/colloidal Py0; the early-stage coarse-grained, cubic, and homogeneous Py1; and the middle-stage fine-grained, cubic/pyritohedron Py2 that includes Py2a (core), Py2b (mantle), and Py2c (rim). The results of the EPMA and in situ LA-ICP-MS analyses show that trace elements of pyrite mainly occur in two forms: solid solutions and invisible or visible inclusions. Mn, Co, Ni, and As enter the pyrite lattice, whereas Ti occurs as mineral inclusions, and Au, Cu, Zn, Sb, and Pb can occur in both forms. Au and As show a positive linear relationship with r = 0.850. Py2b has much higher Au contents (20.1 to 201 ppm) than other pyrite types (Py0: 0.01 to 0.36 ppm; Py1: 0.01 to 0.02 ppm; Py2a: 0.31 to 2.48 ppm; and Py2c: 0.18 to 18.0 ppm). The Dunbasitao deposit is classified as an orogenic gold deposit using the two latest machine learning classifiers based on pyrite trace element data. Fluid immiscibility, sudden cooling, and the substitution of S1− with As1− might be crucial mechanisms leading to Au precipitation. Initial ore-forming fluids brought major amounts of As, Au, Co, Ni, Se, Zn, Ag, Cd, Sn, and other elements, and the Jiangbasitao Formation host rocks contributed a certain amount of As, Ni, Cu, Sb, Pb, and Bi, at least. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the potential ecological and health risks in the area of the antimony mine spill in Longnan, Northwest China, and identifies the sources of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the soil as a result of the spill. The geo-accumulation index and enrichment factor show that the study area is highly contaminated with arsenic (As), mercury (Hg) and antimony (Sb). The ecological risk index in the tailings spill area ranged from 320.43 to 5820.46 (mean: 1489.82), indicating a very-high potential ecological risk, with mean values of 104.86, 1118.87 and 248.84 for As, Hg and Sb, respectively. The multivariate statistical analysis suggested that Sb and Hg come from tailings leakage, while copper (Cu), nickel (Ni) and zinc (Zn) may be imported from natural sources, and As and lead (Pb) originate from agricultural activities. In addition As and Sb pose a high health risk. With the exception of the non-carcinogenic risk in adults, all other risks are significantly exceeded in other populations, with children being the highest-risk group. Increasing the use of steel scrap and enhancing its recycling utilization are important strategies for fostering the low-carbon and environmental-friendly growth of the iron and steel industry in China. However, the current steelmaking processes cannot efficiently remove the residual elements in the scrap, such as Cu, Sn, As, and Sb. As a result, the above elements are recycled and accumulate in the scrap, which will eventually have a negative impact on the properties of steel. Currently, there are few studies on Sb removal from molten steel. To remove the residual element Sb in molten steel, the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 refining slag system containing CaC2 was used, and the effect of the CaC2 content in the molten slag, slag quantity, smelting temperature, and initial Sb and C contents in molten steel on the Sb removal ratio in the steel was investigated, and the mechanism of Sb removal by the aforementioned refining slag system was discussed in order to provide some experimental and theoretical basis for industrialization practice. When the smelting time is 5~10 min, the removal ratio of Sb from molten steel is at its peak and can reach 45.8%. The "Sb-reversion" phenomenon will appear in the molten steel when the smelting period is progressively extended. In molten steel, CaC2 will preferentially react with O and S, and as the smelting temperature decreases, the distribution ratio of Sb, LSb, improves. An increased initial Sb content in molten steel and slag quantity are beneficial to improving the removal ratio of Sb, but an increased initial C content in molten steel is detrimental to the progress of the Sb removal reaction. The removal reaction of Sb from molten steel by CaC2 is a reversible reaction, and the diffusion of the products from the interface is the limiting factor of the overall reaction. Antimony is classified as a critical/strategic metal. Its primary production is predominated by China via pyrometallurgical routes such as volatilization roasting—reduction smelting or direct reduction smelting. The performance of most of the pyro-processes is very sensitive to concentrate type and grade. Therefore, technology selection for a greenfield plant is a significant and delicate task to maximize the recovery rate of antimony and subsequently precious metals (PMs), mainly gold, from the concentrates. The current paper reviews the conventional pyrometallurgical processes and technologies that have been practiced for the treatment of antimony concentrates. The blast furnace is the most commonly used technology, mainly because of its adaptability to different feeds and grades and a high recovery rate. In addition, several other more environmentally friendly pyrometallurgical routes, that were recently developed, are reviewed but these are still at laboratory- or pilot-scales. For example, decarbonization of antimony production through the replacement of carbonaceous reductants with hydrogen seems to be feasible, although the process is still at its infancy, and further research and development are necessary for its commercialization. Antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) are two hazardous metalloid elements, and the biogeochemical cycle of Sb and As can be better understood by studying plant rhizosphere microorganisms associated with Sb mine waste. In the current study, samples of three types of mine waste—Sb mine tailing, waste rocks, and smelting slag—and associated rhizosphere microorganisms of adapted plants were collected from Qinglong Sb mine, southwest China. 16S rRNA was sequenced and used to study the composition of the mine waste microbial community. The most abundant phylum in all samples was Proteobacteria, followed by Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. The community composition varied among different mine waste types. Gammaproteobacteria was the most abundant microorganism in tailings, Actinobacteria was mainly distributed in waste rock, and Saccharimonadia, Acidobacteriae, and Ktedonobacteria were mainly present in slag. At the family level, the vast majority of Hydrogenophilaceae were found in tailings, Ktedonobacteraceae, Chthoniobacteraceae, and Acidobacteriaceae (Subgroup 1) were mostly found in slag, and Pseudomonadaceae and Micrococcaceae were mainly found in waste rock. Actinobacteriota and Arthrobacter are important taxa for reducing heavy metal(loid) mobility, vegetation restoration, and self-sustaining ecosystem construction on antimony mine waste. The Xikuangshan antimony (Sb) deposit is the world's largest known Sb deposit. Due to the lack of suitable minerals for reliable high-precision radiometric dating, it remains difficult to determine the exact age of Sb mineralization in this deposit. Here, we report the first LA-MC-ICP-MS U-Pb ages of syn-stibnite calcite from this deposit. The dating results indicate the presence of at least two stages of Sb mineralization in the Xikuangshan ore district. The calcite-stibnite veins in the Daocaowan ore block probably formed during the Paleocene (58.1 ± 0.9 Ma), representing an early stage of Sb mineralization, while the quartz-stibnite vein in the Feishuiyan ore block probably formed during the Eocene (50.4 ± 4.4 Ma, 50.4 ± 5.0 Ma, and 51.9 ± 1.6 Ma), representing a late stage of Sb mineralization. The new calcite U-Pb ages are significantly younger than the calcite Sm-Nd ages (124.1 ± 3.7 Ma, 155.5 ± 1.1 Ma) reported by previous researchers. We suggest that Sb mineralization of the South China antimony metallogenic belt may be related to tectono-thermal events during Paleogene, possibly linked to high heat flow during the subduction (ca. 60–40 Ma) of the Pacific Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate and/or the Indo–Asian Collision (began at ca. 61 Ma). The young in situ U-Pb ages of calcite challenge the idea of late Mesozoic Sb mineralization in the South China antimony metallogenic belt, suggesting the requirement for more high-precision dating studies. The first global-scale assessment of Sb contamination in soil that was related to mining/smelting activities was conducted based on 91 articles that were published between 1989 and 2021. The geographical variation, the pollution level, the speciation, the influencing factors, and the environmental effects of Sb that were associated with mining/smelting-affected soils were analyzed. The high Sb values mainly occurred in developed (Poland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, New Zealand, Australia) and developing (China, Algeria, Slovakia) countries. Sb concentrations of polluted soil from mining areas that were reported in most countries significantly exceeded the maximum permissible limit that is recommended by WHO, except in Turkey and Macedonia. The soil Sb concentrations decreased in the order of Oceania (29,151 mg/kg) > North Africa (13,022 mg/kg) > Asia (1527 mg/kg) > Europe (858 mg/kg) > South America (37.4 mg/kg). The existing extraction methods for Sb speciation have been classified according to the extractant, however, further research is needed in the standardization of these extraction methods. Modern analytical and characterization technologies, e.g., X-ray absorption spectroscopy, are effective at characterizing chemical speciation. Conditional inference tree (CIT) analysis has shown that the clay content was the major factor that influenced the soil Sb concentration. Non-carcinogenic risks to the public from soil Sb pollution were within the acceptable levels in most regions. An Sb smelter site at the Endeavour Inlet in New Zealand, an abandoned open-pit Sb mine in Djebel Hamimat, Algeria, an old Sb-mining area in Tuscany, Italy, and Hillgrove mine in Australia were selected as the priority control areas. Cynodon dactylon, Boehmeria, Pteris vittata, and Amaranthus paniculatus were found to be potential Sb accumulators. All of the values of bioaccumulation factors for the crops were less than one. However, ingestion of Sb through crop consumption posed potential non-carcinogenic health risks, which should not be neglected. The soil variables (pH, Eh, total sulfur, carbon nitrogen ratio, total organic carbon, and sulfate), the total Sb and the bioavailable Sb, and heavy metal(loid)s (As, Pb, and Fe) were the major parameters affecting the microbial community compositions.

Danjiangkou Reservoir is the water source of the mid-route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project. The source, distribution and potential risk of antimony in its water and sediments are rarely reported. In this study, symmetrical investigation results demonstrated that the concentration of antimony in the Han sub-reservoir and water in front of the dam fluctuated at about 0.9 mg L -1 , while it was relatively higher and increased with the distance from the dam in Dan sub-reservoir water, with an annual average of 0.93~3.15 mg L -1 . In recent years, the concentration of antimony in the Danjiangkou Reservoir showed a downward trend, and the difference between the Han and Dan sub-reservoirs decreased significantly. The antimony in the sediments in the reservoir was primarily derived from the inflowing rivers, and it was higher in the Dan sub-reservoir than in the Han sub-reservoir. The concentration of antimony in the water in the reservoir was considerably higher than the background value in the watersheds, indicating that there is an external input with decreasing input intensity. The content of antimony in the sediments in the reservoir and its inflow rivers was substantially higher than the background value of watersheds, indicating that there is a certain degree of enrichment. In addition, the antimony mining industry in the water source area poses a risk to the water safety of the reservoir. Antimony is not a conventional pollutant. Consequently, the collection of antimony monitoring results is a challenging task. Additionally, this study fills the gap in regional antimony research. Furthermore, the ecological risk assessment of antimony in China is still in its infancy. Unquestionably, the study of the temporal and spatial distribution of antimony concentration will be beneficial for the protection of water sources in relevant regions.

Antimony (Sb) is a trace element applied widely in modern industry. A large number of tailing solid wastes are left and accumulated in the mining area after purifying the precious antimony from the antimony ores, causing serious pollution to the environment. The major aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high-strength concrete. Concrete specimens with 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% ATCA replacing the NCA in conventional concrete were prepared for evaluating the performance of ATCA concrete. The investigators find that ATCA concrete has good workability, and the mechanical properties and long-term behavior (shrinkage and creep) of ATCA concrete with all replacement levels are superior to those of NCA concrete. The durability indices of ATCA concrete, such as the frost-resistant, chloride permeability, and resistance to carbonation, are better than those of NCA concrete. While the alkali activity and cracking sensitivity behavior of ATCA concrete seem to be decreased, nevertheless, the difference is not significant and can be neglected. The researchers demonstrate that all of the control indices of ATCA concrete meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. In this research, the sustainable applications for utilizing antimony tailing coarse aggregate (ATCA) in concrete is investigated. Comprehensive verifications were performed by a series of experiments on the characteristic of ATCA and the toxicity risks of concrete. Firstly, a real case study of utilization of ATCA as a complete substitute for natural coarse aggregate (NCA) in high strength concrete was conducted. Then, chemical composition of ATCA was tested. It is demonstrated that the essential mineral is SiO2 and the lithology of ATCA is quartzite. The mechanical properties, coarse quality of ATCA, and NCA were studied and compared. The compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, and compressive elastic modulus of ATWR are 221.51 MPa, 5.93 MPa, and 3.33 × 104 MPa, which are 1.31, 2.22, 1.40 times of that of NR, respectively. All of the quality control indices of ATCA meet the requirements of the current industry standards of China. Finally, the toxicity risks of ATCA concrete were investigated. It is illustrated that the leaching of main heavy metals including Sb, As, Hg, Pb, Cd, and Zn in the ATCA concrete under different pH conditions are below the regulatory limits.
