This essay examines a little-known but important installation entitled Insure the Life of an Ant, conceived by artist Mike Malloy and displayed at the O.K. Harris Gallery in New York in April of 1972. This provocative and idiosyncratic piece confronted gallery-goers, who became viewer–participants, with the option of killing or saving a live ant displayed like a sculpture on a pedestal, either by pushing a button or not. The artist made the piece, which can function almost like a psychology experiment, to engender a "moral dilemma". I explore the particular role of affect in a participatory art installation, distinct from response to inanimate art. I investigate the roles of emotion and reason in dealing with the work; whether ratiocination can be considered an "anti-affect"; and how the tension between competing thoughts and feelings helped create a psychological drama. The essay looks at how an art space can operate as a zone of moral exceptionalism to encourage questionable actions. It also locates the piece in relation to the emergence of a more behaviorist art in the early 1970s, as discussed by critic Gregory Battcock, and the larger notion of postmodernism. Other contexts investigated include art and animal rights and issues of sentience and speciesism; social and military violence, including capital punishment and the Vietnam War; the 1961 Milgram experiment; Hannah Arendt's concept of the "banality of evil" as a Nazi war criminal defense; and other works of art involving maltreatment or violence toward both human and non-human animals, including those by Marina Abramović, Marco Evaristti, and Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz. Given that Ecuadorians are one of the largest groups of Hispanics living in New York, they have become a tight community that they now call little Ecuador. Although Ecuadorians living in the diaspora in NYC come from different parts of the country (mostly from the Andean region), they share the same cultural practices they performed in Ecuador that give them the sense of being in their country without bearing the instability and turmoil their country experiences. This shows how the group has fostered a sense of a multifaceted, multidimensional simultaneity between the host country and the motherland. The goal of this paper is to analyze the strategies Ecuadorian migrants use to validate their language and cultural practices to negotiate their identity as a group. Data for this paper come from ethnographic observations, semi-spontaneous conversations, oral interviews with members of the group, along with pictures taken while walking the community and participating in some of their events. Our study reveals that participants hold varying perceptions regarding their linguistic and cultural practices. However, it is noteworthy that they recognize these practices as a manifestation of Ecuadorianness, signifying a sense of solidarity among community members. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

West Nile virus (WNV) neuroinvasive disease (WNND) occurs in approximately 1 percent of WNV-infected patients and typically presents as encephalitis, meningitis, or acute flaccid paralysis (AFP). WNND remains a difficult inpatient diagnosis, creating significant challenges for prognostication and therapy selection. We characterized the clinical and diagnostic features of WNND cases at two major academic medical centers in New York City in routine clinical practice. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of thirty-six patients with WNND, including twenty-six encephalitis, four meningitis, and six AFP cases. The most common presenting symptoms were fever (86.1%) and gastrointestinal symptoms (38.9%) in addition to altered mental status (72.2%), lethargy (63.9%), gait disturbances (46.2%), and headache (44.4%). Fourteen (48.3%) patients displayed acute magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, particularly T2 hyperintensities in the bilateral thalami, brainstem, and deep white matter. New York State Department of Health WNV CSF IgM testing was utilized for diagnosis in 58.3% of patients; however, just 38.1% had the result by discharge, compared to 85.6% of those who underwent serum IgM testing. The median length of stay was 13.5 days, 38.9% were intubated, and three patients (8.9%) died during acute hospitalization. Our findings underscore the morbidity, mortality, and diagnostic challenges of WNND, suggesting the potential utility of serum IgM testing in combination with confirmatory CSF testing to expedite diagnosis in the acute setting. Background: New York City was the epicenter of the initial surge of the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Tracheostomy is a critical procedure in the care of patients with COVID-19. We hypothesized that early tracheostomy would decrease the length of time on sedation, time on mechanical ventilation, intensive care unit length of stay, and mortality. Methods: A retrospective analysis of outcomes for all patients with COVID-19 who underwent tracheostomy during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, New York. All adult intensive care units at the Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. Patients/subjects: 888 patients admitted to intensive care with COVID-19. Results: All patients admitted to the intensive care unit with COVID-19 (888) from 1 March 2020 to 1 March 2021 were analyzed and separated further into those intubated (544) and those requiring tracheostomy (177). Of those receiving tracheostomy, outcomes were analyzed for early (≤12 days) or late (>12 days) tracheostomy. Demographics, medical history, laboratory values, type of oxygen and ventilatory support, and clinical outcomes were recorded and analyzed. Conclusions: Early tracheostomy resulted in reduced duration of mechanical ventilation, reduced hospital length of stay, and reduced intensive care unit length of stay in patients admitted to the intensive care unit with COVID-19. In this work, we highlight three different techniques for automatically constructing the dataset for a time-series study: the direct multi-step, the recursive multi-step, and the direct–recursive hybrid scheme. The nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous variable support vector regression (NARX SVR) and the Gaussian process regression (GPR), combined with the differential evolution (DE) for parameter tuning, are the two novel hybrid methods used in this study. The hyper-parameter settings used in the GPR and SVR training processes as part of this optimization technique DE significantly affect how accurate the regression is. The accuracy in the prediction of DE/GPR and DE/SVR, with or without NARX, is examined in this article using data on spot gold prices from the New York Commodities Exchange (COMEX) that have been made publicly available. Fossil fuels, the predominant energy source in the United States, have been identified as major contributors to environmental pollution through the release of harmful emissions. As a countermeasure, there has been an increasing focus on the exploration and development of cleaner energy alternatives to alleviate the environmental degradation caused by fossil fuels and to satisfy the growing energy needs. This study conducted scenario analyses to evaluate the impact of integrating solar energy into specific US power grids on reducing carbon emissions. The analysis encompassed electrical systems within California, New England, New York, and the Southwest, utilizing datasets from the Energy Information Administration and National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The Energy Information Administration dataset includes information on net generation according to each source and carbon emissions according to fuel type, whereas the National Renewable Energy Laboratory dataset provides hourly projections for 6000 theoretical photovoltaic installations and detailed solar energy output data every five minutes over a year. Our findings indicated a notable decrease in carbon dioxide emissions following the introduction of solar power facilities. The most significant reductions were observed in the Southwest and California, attributed to solar plant integration. Conversely, New York and New England were identified as regions requiring additional policy measures and incentives to meet the emission reduction goals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a swell neural network (SNN) algorithm was proposed for solving time-varying path query (TVPQ) problems with privacy protection with the following goals: (i) querying the K-nearest paths with time limitations in a time-varying scenario, and (ii) protecting private information from neighborhood attacks. The proposed SNN is a network in which the optimal paths can be calculated at the same time with no need for training. For TVPQ, a node is considered a neuron, and time-varying means that an edge has different costs in different time windows. For SNN, the query paths are swell sets from the start to the target within an upper limit. An encrypted index is designed for privacy protection. Thermochromic (TC) smart windows are a leading passive building design strategy. Vanadium dioxide (VO2), hydrogel and TC-Perovskite glazing, which constitute the main categories of TC materials, modulate different wavelength regions. Although numerous studies have reported on these TC glazings' energy-saving potential individually, there is a lack of data comparing their energy efficiencies. Moreover, their suitability as an alternative to dynamic solar shading mechanisms remains unexplored. Using building energy simulation, this study found that a hydrogel glazing with broadband thermochromism can save more energy (22–24% savings on average) than opaque roller shades (19–20%) in a typical office in both New York and Hong Kong. VO2 glazing performed comparably to translucent roller shades (14–16% savings), except when used in poorly daylit conditions. TC-Perovskite was a poor replacement for roller shades (~2% savings). The window-to-wall ratio (WWR) that allowed both energy savings and optimal natural light penetration was also identified for each glazing. Hydrogel glazing demonstrated both energy and daylight efficiency in Hong Kong's cooling-dominated climate when used in 40–50% WWR configurations. In New York's colder conditions, VO2 glazing did so for higher WWRs (50–70%). This study aims to forecast New York and Los Angeles gasoline spot prices on a daily frequency. The dataset includes gasoline prices and a big set of 128 other relevant variables spanning the period from 17 February 2004 to 26 March 2022. These variables were fed to three tree-based machine learning algorithms: decision trees, random forest, and XGBoost. Furthermore, a variable importance measure (VIM) technique was applied to identify and rank the most important explanatory variables. The optimal model, a trained random forest, achieves a mean absolute percent error (MAPE) in the out-of-sample of 3.23% for the New York and 3.78% for the Los Angeles gasoline spot prices. The first lag, AR (1), of gasoline is the most important variable in both markets; the top five variables are all energy-related. This paper can strengthen the understanding of price determinants and has the potential to inform strategic decisions and policy directions within the energy sector, making it a valuable asset for both industry practitioners and policymakers. Transposable elements (TEs) are repetitive elements which make up around 45% of the human genome. A class of TEs, known as SINE-VNTR-Alu (SVA), demonstrate the capacity to mobilise throughout the genome, resulting in SVA polymorphisms for their presence or absence within the population. Although studies have previously highlighted the involvement of TEs within neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the exact mechanism has yet to be identified. In this study, we used whole-genome sequencing and RNA sequencing data of ALS patients and healthy controls from the New York Genome Centre ALS Consortium to elucidate the influence of reference SVA elements on gene expressions genome-wide within central nervous system (CNS) tissues. To investigate this, we applied a matrix expression quantitative trait loci analysis and demonstrate that reference SVA insertion polymorphisms can significantly modulate the expression of numerous genes, preferentially in the trans position and in a tissue-specific manner. We also highlight that SVAs significantly regulate mitochondrial genes as well as genes within the HLA and MAPT loci, previously associated within neurodegenerative diseases. This study proposes a fusion approach to enhancing urban remote sensing applications by integrating SAR (Sentinel-1) and optical (Landsat-8) satellite datasets. The fusion technique combines feature-based fusion and simple layer stacking (SLS) to improve the accuracy of urban impervious surface (UIS) extraction. SAR textures and modified indices are used for feature extraction, and classification is performed using the XGBoost machine learning algorithm in Python and Google Earth Engine. The study focuses on four global cities (New York, Paris, Tokyo, and London) with heterogeneous climatic zones and urban dynamics. The proposed method showed significant results. The accuracy assessment using random validation points shows an overall accuracy of 86% for UIS classification with the SLS method, outperforming single-data classification. The proposed approach achieves higher accuracy (86%) compared to three global products (ESA, ESRI, and Dynamic World). New York exhibits the highest overall accuracy at 88%. This fusion approach with the XGBoost classifier holds potential for new applications and insights into UIS mapping, with implications for environmental factors such as land surface temperature, the urban heat island effect, and urban pluvial flooding. Powassan virus (POWV) is a tick-borne flavivirus endemic in North America and Russia. Experimental infections with POWV have confirmed horizontal, transstadial, vertical, and cofeeding transmission routes for potential virus maintenance. In the field, vertical transmission has never been observed. During New York State tick-borne pathogen surveillance, POWV RNA and/or infectious POWV was detected in five pools of questing Ixodes scapularis larvae. Additionally, engorged female I. scapularis adults were collected from hunter-harvested white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in a region with relatively high tick infection rates of POWV and allowed to oviposit under laboratory conditions. POWV RNA was detected in three female adult husks and one pool of larvae from a positive female. Infectious virus was isolated from all three RNA-positive females and the single positive larval pool. The detection of RNA and infectious virus in unfed questing larvae from the field and larvae from replete females collected from the primary tick host implicates vertical transmission as a potential mechanism for the maintenance of POWV in I. scapularis in nature, and elucidates the potential epidemiological significance of larval ticks in the transmission of POWV to humans. Does our food for thought come virtually from the internet? When we take a long view, the instant stroke of a keyboard pales in comparison to the centuries-old evolution of real food harvesting and the generation and exchange of ideas, which have resulted in creative capital. The vernacular architecture of the agricultural built environment has almost dematerialized in its transition from the ancient pre-industrial era to the post-truth world, to become almost only an imagined concept. The symbology of the common threshing terrace of a Portuguese remote mountain village can now be found in multiple spaces of the urban realm, including in the metaphor of a community arts incubator's modus operandi in Albany, New York (USA). How has the concept of food for thought developed and materialized? How has it evolved? And what are some of the expected ways it might be utilized in the future? The purpose of the paper is to trace the evolution of this concept and its elements via the BLC Framework. The methodology employs a time analysis of approximately three centuries to distinguish three distinct evolutionary phases: (i) the pre-industrial era, (ii) the industrial era, and (iii) the information-driven era. The key finding is an up-to-date discussion of the food for thought concept in two distinct geographical worlds and three-time eras, as well as a set of lessons learned according to a protest poem and a rock song. The results are presented in the form of five lessons learned with implications for public policy: the first two lessons pertain to issues of procedural justice as encapsulated in the anonymous 'The Goose' poem, while the last three result from a discussion of selected verses in Nick Cave's 'Fable of the Brown Ape' rock song. Background and Objectives: For persons with dementia, the relationships between caregiver burden, physical frailty, race, behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD), and other associated variables are poorly understood. Only one prior study examined the relationships among these variables but did not include race, which is an important social determinant of health outcomes in the United States. To examine these interactions, we conducted a cross-sectional exploratory study based on a model by Sugimoto and colleagues. Materials and Methods: The sample comprised 85 patient–caregiver dyads (58% White) seen in four centers in diverse regions of New York State. All patients met DSM5 criteria for a major neurocognitive disorder, had a Clinical Dementia Rating sum score of ≥3, and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score of 10 to 26. Other measures included the SHARE-Frailty Instrument(FI), the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) to assess BPSD, Zarit's Caregiver Burden Interview (CBI), Lawton's Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Scale, the MMSE, the Cumulative Illness Rating Scale for Geriatrics (CIRSG), age, and gender. Results: In our sample, 59% met the criteria for prefrail/subsyndromal or frail/syndromal (SSF) on the SHARE-FI. SSF had significant direct effects on the NPI and significant indirect effects on the CBI mediated through the NPI; the NPI had significant direct effects on the CBI. Race (White) had significant direct effects on the CBI (higher) and SSF (lower) but did not have significant indirect effects on the CBI. MMSE, ADL, and CIRSG were not significantly associated with the NPI or the CBI. Conclusions: Our analysis demonstrated that frailty, race, BPSD, and caregiver burden may directly or indirectly influence one another, and therefore should be considered essential elements of dementia assessment, care, and research. The purpose of this study was to determine if short-term outcomes differed for pediatric patients with suspected musculoskeletal infection with or without a preoperative MRI. This was a multicenter, retrospective review of patients aged 0–16 years who presented with atraumatic extremity pain, underwent irrigation and debridement (I&D), and received at least one preoperative or postoperative MRI over a 10-year period. Primary outcomes were time to OR, total I&Ds, readmission rate, time from OR to discharge, and total number of MRIs. Secondary outcomes entailed the rate at which concurrent osteomyelitis was identified in patients with septic arthritis and the extent of the resulting surgical debridement. Of the 104 patients, 72.1% had a preoperative MRI. Patients with a preoperative MRI were significantly less likely to have surgery on the day of admission. No difference was found between groups regarding total I&Ds, readmission rate, time from OR to discharge, and total number of MRIs. Of the 57 patients diagnosed with septic arthritis, those with a preoperative MRI were significantly more likely to have concurrent osteomyelitis identified and to undergo bony debridement in addition to arthrotomy of the joint. In conclusion, patient outcomes are not adversely affected by obtaining a preoperative MRI despite the delay in time to OR. Although preoperative MRI can be beneficial in ruling out other pathologies and identifying the extent of concurrent osteomyelitis, the decision to obtain a preoperative MRI and timing of surgery should be left to the discretion of the treating surgeon. Microbial proton-pump rhodopsin (PPR)-based phototrophy, a light-harvesting mechanism different from chlorophyll-based photosystems, may contribute significantly to solar energy entry into the marine ecosystem. PPR transforms solar energy into cellular energy that is used for various metabolic processes in the cells or flagellar movement. Although rhodopsins or their encoding genes have been documented in a wide phylogenetic range of cultured dinoflagellates, information is limited about how widespread and how spatiotemporally dynamical dinoflagellate PPR (DiPPR) are in natural marine ecosystems. In this study, we investigated DiPPR in Long Island Sound (LIS), a temperate estuary of the Atlantic Ocean between Connecticut and Long Island, New York, USA. We isolated six novel full-length dinoflagellate proton-pump rhodopsin cDNAs, expanding the DiPPR database that is crucial to PPR research. Based on these new sequences and existing sequences of DiPPR, we designed primers and conducted quantitative PCR and sequencing to determine the abundance and diversity of DiPPR genes spatially and temporally throughout a year in the water samples collected from LIS. DiPPR genes were found year-round and throughout LIS but with higher abundances in the eutrophic Western Sound and in April and July. The gene diversity data suggest that there are at least five distinct rhodopsin-harboring groups of dinoflagellates throughout the year. The abundance of DiPPR genes, measured as copy number per mL of seawater, appeared not to be influenced by water temperature or nitrogen nutrient concentration but exhibited weak negative correlations with orthophosphate concentration and salinity and a positive correlation with the abundance of DiPPR-harboring dinoflagellates. This first quantitative profiling of PPR in natural plankton reveals the prevalence and dynamics of this plastid-independent photoenergy harvesting mechanism in a temperate estuary and provides efficient DiPPR primers potentially useful for future research. A model of epidemic dynamics is developed that incorporates continuous variables for infection age and vaccination age. The model analyzes pre-symptomatic and symptomatic periods of an infected individual in terms of infection age. This property is shown to be of major importance in the severity of the epidemic, when the infectious period of an infected individual precedes the symptomatic period. The model also analyzes the efficacy of vaccination in terms of vaccination age. The immunity to infection of vaccinated individuals varies with vaccination age and is also of major significance in the severity of the epidemic. Application of the model to the 2003 SARS epidemic in Taiwan and the COVID-19 epidemic in New York provides insights into the dynamics of these diseases. It is shown that the SARS outbreak was effectively contained due to the complete overlap of infectious and symptomatic periods, allowing for the timely isolation of affected individuals. In contrast, the pre-symptomatic spread of COVID-19 in New York led to a rapid, uncontrolled epidemic. These findings underscore the critical importance of the pre-symptomatic infectious period and the vaccination strategies in influencing the dynamics of an epidemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Papillary thyroid cancer diagnosis is a significant source of worry to patients, despite its relatively good prognosis. Such significant distress may prompt patients to receive surgical treatment, even when active surveillance may be a safer alternative. Patients with pre-existing anxiety and depression may be particularly prone to opting for surgical treatment. We collected data on the time between fine-needle aspiration (FNA) diagnosis and surgical treatment of a cohort of patients seen at a large tertiary center in New York in 2018–2020 and investigated mental health status as potential predictors. We found that pre-existing anxiety and depression may lead to shorter times for surgical intervention for thyroid cancer. Our study adds to the limited literature on mental health predictors of thyroid cancer decision making. (1) Background: A pre-existing psychiatric condition may impact decision making by patients and/or physicians following a thyroid cancer diagnosis, such as potentially electing surgery over active surveillance, thus shortening the time to cancer removal. This is the first study to investigate the association between pre-existing anxiety and/or depression and time to receive surgical treatment for thyroid cancer. (2) Methods: Retrospective data were collected from 652 surgical thyroid cancer patients at our institution from 2018 to 2020. We investigated the time between thyroid cancer diagnosis and surgery, comparing patients with pre-existing anxiety and/or depression to those without. (3) Results: Patients with anxiety, depression, and both anxiety and depression had a significantly shorter time between diagnosis and surgery (51.6, 57, and 57.4 days, respectively) compared to patients without (111.9 days) (p = 0.002, p = 0.004, p = 0.003, respectively). (4) Conclusions: Although little is known about the impact of pre-existing psychiatric conditions in the decision-making process for thyroid cancer surgery, this present study showed that anxiety and/or depression may lead to more immediate surgical interventions. Nb-Ti high-strength low-alloy pipeline steel was subjected to a six-pass rolling process followed by the coiling process at different temperatures between 600 and 650 °C using the thermo-mechanical testing system Gleeble 3500 (Gleeble, New York, NY, USA). This experimental steel was subjected to 72% heavy reduction through a thermos-mechanical controlled process. Thereafter, the microstructures were observed using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter scanning diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry and selected area electron diffraction. For the selected three coiling temperatures of 600, 625, and 650 °C, acicular ferrite, polygonal ferrite, and pearlite were observed, and morphology and statistical analysis were adopted for the study of precipitates. Based on the estimation by the Ashby–Orowan formula, the incremental strength through precipitation strengthening decreases with coiling temperatures and reaches 26.67 Mpa at a coiling temperature of 600 °C. Precipitation-time-temperature curves were obtained to explain the transformation of precipitates. The (Nb, Ti)(C, N) particles tended to precipitate in the acicular ferrite with [011](Nb, Ti)(C, N)//[011]α-Fe orientation. The lower coiling temperature provided enough driving force for the nucleation of precipitates while inhibiting their growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Economic inequality is a significant and growing issue in the U.S., particularly within Black communities. Improving Black entrepreneurship is critical to addressing the economic gaps. In this paper, we discuss a unique, newly established educational program focused on cannabis education at Medgar Evers College (MEC) in New York. One of the goals of the new program is to increase Black entrepreneurship in the rapidly growing cannabis industry. For decades, cannabis use and distribution were criminal offenses that led to the disproportionate incarceration of Black individuals compared to White individuals. As it is being decriminalized across the country, and medical and recreational use spreads, the tool formerly used for Black incarceration can now become a tool for advancing Black entrepreneurship. To work and/or operate a venture in the cannabis industry requires students to understand a range of issues and build a strong foundation of broad knowledge. We discuss the emerging curricula and illustrate some of the elements that will help spur successful new venture creation led by Black and minority entrepreneurs in this exciting new field. Some early successes and lessons learned are discussed, which can help other educational institutions looking to create or improve their own cannabis-related curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The dynamic relationship that exists between a religious rite and its territory is interpreted and analysed by religious anthropology as a form of protection, offered by the sacred to the place in which it resides. According to this interpretation, passage through the territory of what is reputed to be sacred or even its very presence as a sanctuary, drives evil away and is believed to perform a generally stable protective function. Within such a dynamic, the rite that actually creates this sacred passage, i.e., the procession of relics, lays the foundations for an analysis of the two specific variables that are, in actual fact, intwined: on the one side is the rite, and on the other, the territory. Such a relationship appears all the more problematic due to the progressive rationalisation of the religious dimension, extensively dealt with by Max Weber (Weber 1920) and accepted by contemporary sociology on religion, as it is now a supernatural phenomenon that is only considered to have a representational dimension. The internal secularization at the festival of Saint Rosalia happened in 2023, with the landing of the triumphal cart in New York. The rite moves to another new territory and transforms it. The cart of Saint Rosalia, preserved in the Columbus Citizens Foundation in New York, represents the identity of Sicilian immigrants but also a new form of ritualization on a new territory through an "ancient" ritual. When the sacred is located within the institutional dimension of a salvation religion presided over by an institution, it appears separate from any purely mechanical (and therefore magical) dimension, while the territory becomes a variable in which a multiplicity of factors are contained. These factors not only give importance to the very aspects of the ritual itself, boosting its civil and secular parts, but also to the religious programme, which undergoes unexpected transformations introduced by the presiding institution. The main object of this analysis is, therefore, to establish an interactive path whereby, on the one hand, the territory, through its various cultural components (both secular and religious), shapes the religious rite and how it places restrictions on those protective functions, while on the other, how the rite places its own constraints on the cultural transformations that take place in the fabric of society. Saradamani Mukhopadhyay (1853–1920), more widely known as Sarada Devi and, to her devotees, the Holy Mother, presents an illuminating case study of the various means by which, in many respects, a highly traditional and typical rural Hindu woman of her time, operating from within the categories of Bengali Hindu society, was able to navigate these categories in ways that did not undermine, but rather enhanced, her agency, enabling her to shape her social reality in creative and transformative ways. Inhabiting the traditional role of mother and nurturer while carrying it out in a highly non-traditional manner, Sarada Devi played a central, often behind-the-scenes, role as a major influencer of an important modern Hindu spiritual movement—indeed, the first such movement to be able to boast an international following. Having no biological children of her own, Sarada Devi became the mother to this movement and to the monastic order dedicated to carrying forward the vision of her husband, Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa (1836–1886), as interpreted both by herself and his disciples, the most prominent of whom was Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902), who is well known for having brought Ramakrishna's teachings to the Western world through his lectures in America, including at the World Parliament of Religions held in Chicago in 1893 and his founding of the first Vedanta Societies, starting in New York in 1894. This research offers an exploration of the social networks within two distinct watershed groups in the Hudson River, New York State, USA: citizen-based and agency-based organizations. Through a social network analysis of their operations and interactions, this study unveils the complex dynamics and roles of individual nodes in facilitating nine types of connections, such as political and financial, within these networks. The citizen-based organization demonstrated denser and more cohesive networks, suggesting robust relationships and enhanced resilience and adaptability. In contrast, the agency-based organization exhibited more hierarchical networks. This study employs both network-level and node-level analyses to examine the social networks within watershed groups. Our network-level analysis focuses on metrics such as density, average degree, and hierarchy, while our node-level analysis examines clustering coefficients and influence. It also explores ego networks through an analysis of their density and the effective size of structural holes. Our finding is that the social networks of the two groups are quite distinct, and there is limited exchange of information and resources between them. However, we discovered that effective communication among a few well-connected individuals (e.g., those with high influence values) within each group can enhance the effectiveness and resilience of these networks. Simple Summary: Populations of the invasive spotted lanternfly in the eastern United States threaten vineyards and pose a public nuisance. Methods for control are being investigated, with an interest in mortality caused by insect-specific pathogens and naturally occurring predators. Two species of insect-pathogenic fungi caused extensive mortality in spotted lanternfly populations in fall 2018, and two additional fungal pathogens have been reported. Our extensive surveys, which emphasized a year with a summer drought, document that while Beauveria bassiana was most abundant, fifteen additional fungal pathogens killed spotted lanternflies. Although levels of infection for many pathogen species were low, infection was greatest in adults sampled in September and October, when spotted lanternfly reproduction occurs. Thus, we report an increased diversity of naturally occurring generalist fungal pathogens attacking this relatively new invasive planthopper. In the eastern United States, populations of the invasive spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula, are abundant and spreading. Four species of naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungi have previously been reported as infecting these planthoppers, with two of these causing epizootics. Nymphal- and adult-stage lanternflies in Pennsylvania and New York were surveyed for entomopathogenic fungal infections from October 2021 to November 2023, and assays were conducted to confirm the pathogenicity of species that were potentially pathogenic. Beauveria bassiana was the most abundant pathogen, but we report an additional 15 previously unreported species of entomopathogenic fungi infecting spotted lanternflies, all in the order Hypocreales (Ascomycota). The next most common pathogens were Fusarium fujikuroi and Sarocladium strictum. While infection prevalence by species was often low, probably impacted to some extent by the summer drought in 2022, together these pathogens caused a total of 6.7% mortality. A significant trend was evident over time within a season, with low levels of infection among nymphs and higher infection levels in mid- and late-stage adults, the stages when mating and oviposition occur. In her triple condition of emigrant, artist and woman, the work of Spanish filmmaker Chus Gutiérrez is a privileged and singular object of study. Through her filmography it is possible to approach the changes that have taken place in the cities on both sides of the Atlantic. Chus Gutiérrez resided in New York during the decade of the 1980s and returned to Madrid to witness the changes that this city was undergoing: from being the epicenter of a dictatorship to a democratic city. Her vision of both places is clearly reflected in two of her films: Sublet (1992) and El Calentito (2005). The protagonists profiled by Chus Gutiérrez in these films are young women who move through complex metropolitan spaces at a critical moment of their lives. Cities become another character, illustrating, pushing, or limiting their course; spaces in which the protagonists accept their differences and begin the search for their individual and collective identity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 87% of Asian Americans had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine as of July 2023. The purpose of this study is to identify the sources of information, preferred vaccine types, and levels of satisfaction related to COVID-19 vaccination among Chinese Americans, the largest subgroup of Asian immigrants living in the U.S. Our survey data were collected from 241 Chinese American early adopters of the COVID-19 vaccine, who completed at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in June 2021. Our results indicated that their major information sources regarding COVID-19 vaccination included health officials and authorities, local news, family/friends/co-workers, social media platforms, and healthcare professionals. More than half of the participants expressed a preference for the Pfizer-BioNTech (New York, U.S.) vaccine based on the primary considerations of safety, efficacy, credibility of the developer, and availability. A majority of the participants felt satisfied with their experience of receiving the COVID-19 vaccination. Participants with higher levels of self-efficacy and subjective norms related to receiving the COVID-19 vaccine were more likely to express satisfaction with the vaccination. These findings provide valuable insights into Chinese Americans' information sources, vaccine preferences, and satisfaction levels regarding COVID-19 vaccination. Estimation of time-varying autoregressive models for count-valued time series can be computationally challenging. In this direction, we propose a time-varying Poisson autoregressive (TV-Pois-AR) model that accounts for the changing intensity of the Poisson process. Our approach can capture the latent dynamics of the time series and therefore make superior forecasts. To speed up the estimation of the TV-AR process, our approach uses the Bayesian Lattice Filter. In addition, the No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS) is used, instead of a random walk Metropolis–Hastings algorithm, to sample intensity-related parameters without a closed-form full conditional distribution. The effectiveness of our approach is evaluated through model-based and empirical simulation studies. Vehicular incidents, especially those involving tractor trailers, are increasing in number every year. These events are extremely costly for fleets, in terms of damage or loss of property, loss of efficiency, and certainly in terms of loss of life. Although the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for performing inspections, and fleet managers are encouraged to maintain their fleet and participate in regular inspections, it is uncertain whether these inspections are occurring at a frequency that is necessary to prevent incidents. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) of the DOT manages and maintains the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) dataset, which contains all incident and inspection data regarding commercial vehicles in the U.S. The purpose of this preliminary analysis was to explore the MCMIS dataset through spatiotemporal analyses, to uncover findings that may hint at potential improvements in the DOT inspection process and highlight location-specific trends in the dataset. These analyses are novel, as previous research using the MCMIS dataset only examined the data at the state or county level, not at a national scale. The results from the analyses pinpointed specific major metropolitan areas, namely Harris County (Houston), Texas, and three of the New York boroughs (Kings, Queens, and the Bronx), which were found to have increasing incident rates during the study period (2016–2020). An overview of potential causal factors contributing to this increase are provided as well as an overview of the inspection process, and suggestions for improvement relative to the highlighted locations in Texas and New York are also provided. Ultimately, it is suggested that the incorporation of advanced technology and automation may prove beneficial in reducing the occurrence of events that lead to incidents and may also help in the inspection process. The Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is an insect defoliator of the potato, Solanum tuberosum L. This species thrives in agricultural environments because of its flexible and complex life history, as well as its ability to evolve insecticide resistance. As a result, it has become a widely distributed agricultural pest. Ledprona (trade name Calantha) is a recently developed novel double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) insecticide that controls populations of Colorado potato beetle through RNA interference (RNAi). Previous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of ledprona through laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies. Colorado potato beetles from geographically distinct populations are known to vary in their response to insecticides, including experimental compounds based on RNAi. We tested the mortality and foliage consumption of beetles from different areas in the US treated with ledprona and found significant variation in both parameters. The beetles originating from New York were significantly less susceptible to ledprona in leaf disc assays compared to other populations. However, currently there is no evidence of reduced performance of ledprona against that population under field conditions, possibly because intoxicated beetles cannot withstand multiple stressors present in the field. The results of this study confirmed that the ledprona efficacy differs among geographically distinct populations, which may have implications for managing Colorado potato beetles. Background: Immune-related cutaneous adverse events (ircAEs) are frequent and may reduce quality of life and consistent dosing. IL12/23 has been implicated in psoriasis, which is reminiscent of the psoriasiform/lichenoid ircAE phenotype. We report the use of ustekinumab as a therapeutic option. Methods: Patients at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, who received immune checkpoint inhibitors and were treated with ustekinumab or had the keywords "ustekinumab" or "Stelara" in their clinical notes between 1 March 2017 and 1 December 2022 were retrospectively identified via a database query. Documentation from initial and follow-up visits was manually reviewed, and response to ustekinumab was categorized into complete cutaneous response (CcR, decrease to CTCAE grade 0), partial cutaneous response (PcR, any decrease in CTCAE grade exclusive of decrease to grade 0), and no cutaneous response (NcR, no change in CTCAE grade or worsening). Labs including complete blood count (CBC), cytokine panels, and IgE were obtained in a subset of patients as standard of care. Skin biopsies were reviewed by a dermatopathologist. Results: Fourteen patients with psoriasiform (85.7%), maculopapular (7.1%), and pyoderma gangrenosum (7.1%) ircAEs were identified. Ten (71.4%) receiving ustekinumab had a positive response to treatment. Among these 10 responders, 4 (40%) demonstrated partial cutaneous response and 6 (60%) demonstrated complete cutaneous resolution. Six patients (42.9%) experienced interruptions to their checkpoint inhibitor treatment as a result of intolerable ircAEs, and following ircAE management with ustekinumab, two (33.3%) were successfully rechallenged with their checkpoint inhibitors. On histopathology, patients primarily had findings of interface or psoriasiform dermatitis. No patients reported an adverse event related to ustekinumab. Conclusions: Ustekinumab showed a benefit in a subset of patients with psoriasiform/lichenoid ircAEs. No safety signals were identified. Precision chemical thinning is the most common method of thinning apple fruitlets because it requires little time and is cost-effective. The aims of the current study were I.- to investigate the effect of the application of metamitron at different rates on 'Gala' apples; II.- to determine which fruit diameters were most sensitive to metamitron spray at several rates (between 180 and 500 ppm); and III- to identify the key environmental factors that explain Metamitron efficacy on a year-to-year basis. Eighteen trials were conducted over seven seasons, from 2015 to 2022 in 'Gala' apple orchards in Geneva (New York State). Metamitron was applied at different rates between 180 and 500 ppm, and the timing of the application was between petal fall (4.5 mm) and 18.5 mm fruit size. In each of the studies and years, the effect of meteorological parameters was evaluated. Our results suggest that a linear rate effect was observed in all trials, but that there were differences between the slopes of the regression every year because chemical thinning efficacy was variable year to year. The maximum metamitron efficacy was between 9.5 and 11 mm king fruit diameter; however, metamitron showed thinning efficacy at all phenological stages, from petal fall to 18.5 mm in 'Gala' apples. Our results suggest that the important meteorological factors affecting thinning efficacy were temperature and solar radiation on the day of application and for the next 6 days. The solar radiation after application of metamitron was the most important meteorological factor. Fruit drop caused by metamitron increased with low solar radiation. The minimum and maximum temperatures were also important factors in determining metamitron efficacy. A high minimum temperature (during the night) increased the fruit drop caused by metamitron and the maximum temperature during the day showed a negative correlation with the efficacy of metamitron. Supplemental Instruction is an evidence-based academic support program which improves the success of higher education undergraduate students who participate in the program, including students from historically underrepresented populations. Sessions are led by near-peer leaders who have previously successfully completed the course. While the impacts of leading SI programs have previously been demonstrated, there is little research on the specific impacts on historically underrepresented student leaders at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs). Our study aims to elucidate the impact of leading SI on our diverse population of SI leaders at the largest private HSI in New York State. Data were collected from SI leaders on their reflective perceptions about their experiences as SI leaders through both surveys and focus groups. Our data demonstrate that our diverse SI leaders feel positively about their experiences in the SI program with a focus on three areas of perceived self-improvement: confidence, communication and community. Objective: The goal of this study was to compare the pulp temperature increase during light curing of different composite thicknesses in deep class I cavities using two thermal sensing tools. Methodology: Round occlusal class I cavities with a remaining dentin thickness (RDT) of 1 mm from the cavity floor were performed on 15 extracted sound molars. Samples were divided into three groups (n = 5). In group A, cavities were restored using the Filtek Z350 XT conventional composite through the incremental filling technique, whereas group B cavities were restored using the Filtek Bulk-Fill flowable composite through the bulk-fill technique. Specimens of the Filtek Bulk-Fill flowable composite using the incremental filling technique were used to restore cavities in group C. An infrared thermal camera (IRT; Flir, Wilsonville, OR, USA) and K-type thermocouple (Perfect Prime TC0520, New York, NY, USA) were used to measure the heat generated during composite photo-polymerization. Results: There were no significant differences within the same group using either the thermocouple or IRT (p > 0.05). One-way ANOVA showed no significant differences between groups A and C (p > 0.05), whereas group B was significantly different from groups A and C with each sensing tool (p < 0.05). Conclusion: IRT and thermocouple heat readings were comparable. Based on the current findings, the bulk-fill technique resulted in the lowest heat generation among the groups. Therefore, increasing the light-curing time and the number of composite increments was directly correlated with increases in intra-pulpal temperature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Telemedicine became widespread during the COVID-19 pandemic, but little is known about its persistence in routine cancer care after the pandemic's peak. This study examined telemedicine use for breast and prostate cancer patients at a New York City cancer center before, during, and after the pandemic's peak. Telemedicine usage increased from 2% before the pandemic to 50% during the peak and then decreased to 30% after the peak. Both during and after the peak, psychiatry, social work, and nutrition conducted almost all visits remotely, while surgery and nursing maintained low telemedicine usage. Most departments continued to use telemedicine at or above peak levels, except for medicine, neurology, and survivorship. Anesthesiology and neurology used telemedicine more for follow-ups, while nursing used it more for new visits. These findings highlight specific contexts where patients and providers choose telemedicine even when other options are available. However, more research is needed to assess telemedicine's suitability for and impact on cancer care. While COVID-19 catalyzed a shift to telemedicine, little is known about the persistence of remote cancer care in non-emergent times. We assessed telemedicine use at a high-volume academic cancer center in New York City and analyzed breast and prostate cancer visits pre-COVID-19, peak COVID-19, and post-peak. Descriptive statistics assessed visit mode (in person, telemedicine) and type (new, follow-up, other) by department/specialty, with Fisher's exact tests comparing peak/post-peak differences. The study included 602,233 visits, with telemedicine comprising 2% of visits pre-COVID-19, 50% peak COVID-19, and 30% post-peak. Notable variations emerged by department/specialty and visit type. Post-peak, most departments/specialties continued using telemedicine near or above peak levels, except medicine, neurology, and survivorship, where remote care fell. In psychiatry, social work, and nutrition, nearly all visits were conducted remotely during and after peak COVID-19, while surgery and nursing maintained low telemedicine usage. Post-peak, anesthesiology and neurology used telemedicine seldom for new visits but often for follow-ups, while nursing showed the opposite pattern. These trends suggest department- and visit-specific contexts where providers and patients choose telemedicine in non-emergent conditions. The questing behaviors of blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are largely regulated by environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, and vegetation. While this relationship is relatively clear at the macro- and meso-spatial scales, it is inadequately examined at the micro scale. Our field work in the New York City suburbs during 2017–2018 revealed significant local variations in the quantity of questing blacklegged ticks. The purpose of this study is to identify and test the environmental factors that impact the number of questing blacklegged ticks at the micro-spatial scale. In addition to the number of ticks, surface temperature, and relative humidity data collected in the field, geospatial technologies were leveraged to extract micro-scale spatial and environmental measures, including vegetation index, land cover, elevation, and ecotone, from high-resolution digital imagery and LiDAR data. Regression models were then built to identify the key factors that influence the spatiotemporal patterns of questing blacklegged ticks. The results largely align with the existing research but display characteristics of complexity such as multicollinearity, nonlinearity, and thresholds in relation to temperature, humidity, and vegetation composition at the micro scale, whereas mixed hardwood and dwarf shrubs tend to have higher numbers of questing ticks. It is often argued that digital labour platforms entail an expansion of opportunities for women for several reasons. They facilitate the balance between paid work and household chores as a result of time flexibility, they eliminate entry and permanence barriers for typically male work sectors, they enable economic independence, and they favour the creation of professional networks. Several studies, however, have shown that the wage gap, the sexual division of labour, occupational segregation, and gender stereotypes still persist. Hence, to what extent do the new forms of labour mediated by digital platforms lead to an expansion of opportunities for women? This article analyses the socio-labour inclusion of low-income women in digital labour platforms by contrasting the model of corporate platforms against the emerging alternative of platform cooperatives. The movement of platform cooperativism advocates for the creation of platform companies based on democratic ownership and governance models that reduce inequalities in a broad sense. The methodological approach is based on the comparison of two platforms: Zolvers, which was founded in 2013 with headquarters in Argentina and which operates as an intermediary or marketplace between those who offer and those who require home cleaning services, and Up & Go, which was founded in 2017 in New York and is owned by six worker cooperatives that use the platform to offer various services on demand, particularly home cleaning services. Whereas Zolvers offers job opportunities with possibilities of formalisation but no guarantee of stability, Up & Go is owned and managed by worker cooperatives that seek to guarantee living wages for their worker-members. Concerning working conditions, Zolvers reproduces power asymmetries of domestic work, subordinating workers to the platform and the hirers. On the contrary, Up & Go empowers women workers to decide on their schedules and hirers, among other issues. Finally, whereas Zolvers does not enable the participation of workers either in governance or in technology design, the cooperative nature of Up & Go promotes their involvement. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the fracture resistance of a single-unit fixed prosthesis, using a CAD/CAM PMMA material and two printed materials (3DPPa and 3DPPb). A typodont with a specific preparation for a full crown was used; a digital impression was made with a state-of-the-art scanner (PrimeScanTM, Dentsply-SironaTM, New York, NY, USA), and a full coverage restoration was designed using a biogeneric design proposal by means of specific software (InLAB 22.1, Dentsply-Sirona, NY, USA). Sixty crowns were prepared, divided into three groups according to the material: 3DPPa (n = 20), 3DPPb (n = 20), both 3D-printed from the.STL file with a resolution of 50 μm, and PMMA (n = 20) milled-derived, which were subjected to a thermocycling process. A universal testing machine (Universal/Tensile Testing Machine, Autograph AGS-X Series) with integrated software (TRAPEZIUM LITE X) equipped with a 20 kN load cell was used to determine the fracture resistance. Significant differences were found by Kruskal–Wallis test and multiple comparisons (p < 0.05) in fracture resistance between materials. The fracture resistance for the PMMA material was higher, and the standard deviation was lower (x = 1427.9; sd = 36.9 N) compared to the 3DPPa (x = 1231; sd = 380.1 N) and 3DPPb (x = 1029.9; sd = 166.46 N) prints. The restorations from the milled-derived group showed higher average fracture resistance than the provisional restorations obtained from the printed groups. Simple Summary: We studied cognitive (thinking) abilities and brain structure and function in older adults with multiple myeloma—a cancer of plasma cells—treated with high-dose chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. The initial results suggested that after the chemotherapy and transplant, functional connectivity was diminished in regions involving the frontal and parietal lobes of the brain, while brain structure and cognitive function remained relatively stable. We also found increases in markers of inflammation after the transplant. The findings provide supporting evidence for the vulnerability of frontal and parietal brain regions to the side effects of chemotherapy. These preliminary findings would support the design of large future studies with the goal of developing therapeutic interventions. There is a paucity of research on treatment-related neurotoxicity in older adults with multiple myeloma (MM) treated with high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) and autologous SCT (HDC/ASCT), despite the increasing use of this regimen. We examined resting state functional connectivity (RSFC), gray matter (GM) volume, neurocognitive function (NF), and proinflammatory cytokines (PCy) in older patients with MM pre- and post-HDC/ASCT. Eighteen patients underwent MRI, NF tests, and serum PCy measurements prior to HDC/ASCT, and fifteen patients completed a follow up five-months post-HDC/ASCT. There were significant decreases in RSFC post-HDC/ASCT in (1) the central executive network (CEN) involving the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and right posterior parietal cortex (p = 0.022) and (2) the CEN involving the right posterior parietal cortex and the salience network involving the right dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (p = 0.029). There were no significant changes in GM or NF, except for improvements in attention (Digit Span Backward, p = 0.03). There were significant increases in several PCy post-HDC/ASCT (p ≤ 0.05). In conclusion, RSFC decreased in frontal, parietal, and cingulate cortices post-HDC/ASCT, NF was relatively stable, and several PCy increased. These findings are congruent with other studies in cancer patients and provide supporting evidence for the vulnerability of frontoparietal regions to chemotherapy's adverse effects. Accurate estimation of transportation flow is a challenging task in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). Transporting data with dynamic spatial-temporal dependencies elevates transportation flow forecasting to a significant issue for operational planning, managing passenger flow, and arranging for individual travel in a smart city. The task is challenging due to the composite spatial dependency on transportation networks and the non-linear temporal dynamics with mobility conditions changing over time. To address these challenges, we propose a Spatial-Temporal Graph Convolutional Recurrent Network (ST-GCRN) that learns from both the spatial stations network data and time series of historical mobility changes in order to estimate transportation flow at a future time. The model is based on Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) in order to further improve the accuracy of transportation flow estimation. Extensive experiments on two real-world datasets of transportation flow, New York bike-sharing system and Hangzhou metro system, prove the effectiveness of the proposed model. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) and chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell patients are immunocompromised, remain at high risk following SARS-CoV-2 infection, and are less likely than immunocompetent individuals to respond to vaccination. As part of the safety lead-in portion of a phase 2 clinical trial in patients post HCT/CAR-T for hematological malignancies (HM), we tested the immunogenicity of the synthetic modified vaccinia Ankara-based COVID-19 vaccine COH04S1 co-expressing spike (S) and nucleocapsid (N) antigens. Thirteen patients were vaccinated 3–12 months post HCT/CAR-T with two to four doses of COH04S1. SARS-CoV-2 antigen-specific humoral and cellular immune responses, including neutralizing antibodies to ancestral virus and variants of concern (VOC), were measured up to six months post vaccination and compared to immune responses in historical cohorts of naïve healthy volunteers (HV) vaccinated with COH04S1 and naïve healthcare workers (HCW) vaccinated with the FDA-approved mRNA vaccine Comirnaty® (Pfizer, New York, NY, USA). After one or two COH04S1 vaccine doses, HCT/CAR-T recipients showed a significant increase in S- and N-specific binding antibody titers and neutralizing antibodies with potent activity against SARS-CoV-2 ancestral virus and VOC, including the highly immune evasive Omicron XBB.1.5 variant. Furthermore, vaccination with COH04S1 resulted in a significant increase in S- and N-specific T cells, predominantly CD4+ T lymphocytes. Elevated S- and N-specific immune responses continued to persist at six months post vaccination. Furthermore, both humoral and cellular immune responses in COH04S1-vaccinated HCT/CAR-T patients were superior or comparable to those measured in COH04S1-vaccinated HV or Comirnaty®-vaccinated HCW. These results demonstrate robust stimulation of SARS-CoV-2 S- and N-specific immune responses including cross-reactive neutralizing antibodies by COH04S1 in HM patients post HCT/CAR-T, supporting further testing of COH04S1 in immunocompromised populations. Simple Summary: Human activities have imposed unprecedented changes on more than half of the Earth's terrestrial surfaces. Biodiversity losses will ensue. Considering patchy landscapes (e.g., different landcover types, from completely "unnatural" to "natural" systems), what should be the shape of the relationship between the total number of species as a function of the proportion of natural landcover? Current theoretical and empirical studies have insisted on monotonic increasing relationships, implying species linearly declining as natural covers are converted to human-dominated areas, ignoring non-linear unimodal ones. We addressed this issue, offering potential explanation of which factors may be linked to hump-shaped relationships between avian diversity and gradients of natural landcover in landscapes of different sizes (25–900 km2) in Ontario and New York State. We showed that the hump-shaped pattern is consistent across spatial scales and bioclimatic regions, where diversity reaches its maximum of around 40–60% of natural landcover. Pragmatic conservation actions aiming to mitigate biodiversity loss from land-use modifications should focus on alleviating environmental stress in intensively used areas while managing efficiently the ones holding moderate proportions of natural habitats. Predicting species' ecological responses to landcovers within landscapes could guide conservation practices. Current modelling efforts derived from classic species–area relationships almost always predict richness monotonically increasing as the proportion of landcovers increases. Yet evidence to explain hump-shaped richness–landcover patterns is lacking. We tested predictions related to hypothesised drivers of peaked relationships between richness and proportion of natural landcover. We estimated richness from breeding bird atlases at different spatial scales (25 to 900 km2) in New York State and Southern Ontario. We modelled richness to gradients of natural landcover, temperature, and landcover heterogeneity. We controlled models for sampling effort and regional size of the species pool. Species richness peaks as a function of the proportion of natural landcover consistently across spatial scales and geographic regions sharing similar biogeographic characteristics. Temperature plays a role, but peaked relationships are not entirely due to climate–landcover collinearities. Heterogeneity weakly explains richness variance in the models. Increased amounts of natural landcover promote species richness to a limit in landscapes with relatively little (<30%) natural cover. Higher amounts of natural cover and a certain amount of human-modified landcovers can provide habitats for species that prefer open habitats. As of December 2009, cystic fibrosis (CF) newborn screening (NBS) is performed in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia. Widespread implementation of CF newborn screening (CFNBS) in the US and internationally has brought about new and varied challenges. Immunoreactive trypsinogen (IRT) remains the first, albeit imperfect, biomarker used universally in the screening process. Advances in genetic testing have provided an opportunity for newborn screening programs to add CFTR sequencing tiers to their algorithms. This in turn will enable earlier identification of babies with CF and improve longer-term outcomes through prompt treatment and intervention. CFTR sequencing has led to the ability to identify infants with CF from diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds more equitably while also identifying an increasing proportion of infants with inconclusive diagnoses. Using the evolution of the New York State CF newborn screening program as a guide, this review outlines the basic steps in a universal CF newborn screening program, considers how to reduce bias, highlights challenges, offers guidance to address these challenges and provides recommendations for future consideration. Simple Summary: Dogs are often less comfortable around unfamiliar men than unfamiliar women, yet most studies of stranger-directed aggression have not examined whether the sex of the stranger is a risk factor. We analyzed data collected by staff at a NY shelter to determine whether dogs responded differently to unfamiliar men and unfamiliar women during the Stranger test of the behavioral evaluation. Of the 283 dogs tested, 26 were undersocialized and from the same home; 19.2% were assessed as showing no concerning behavior during the Stranger test. Of the 257 remaining dogs, 89.9% were assessed as showing no concerning behavior. Dogs tested with a male stranger (n = 55) had significantly higher scores on the test, indicating greater uneasiness, than dogs tested with a female stranger (n = 202). However, the mean score for dogs tested with a male stranger (2.2) fell within the range of scores considered not concerning by the shelter (1–3). In summary, we found that the sex of a stranger influenced dog responses during the Stranger test, but in practice, our findings do not indicate that changes are needed in how shelters conduct or interpret tests for stranger-directed aggression. Our findings also underscore the importance of socialization for dogs. In many situations, domestic dogs display greater uneasiness with unfamiliar men than unfamiliar women. However, little is known about whether the sex of an unfamiliar person is a risk factor for stranger-directed aggression, especially with respect to behaviors less intense than biting. We analyzed data collected by behavioral staff over a 27-month period (n = 283 dogs) at a New York shelter to determine whether the sex of an unfamiliar person influenced behaviors assessed during the Stranger test of the canine behavioral evaluation. Scores ranged from 1 (calm and friendly) to 5 (will not approach stranger or unsafe to allow an approach). No concerning behaviors (scores 1–3) were assessed for 19.2% of 26 undersocialized dogs from one home and 89.9% of the remaining 257 dogs. Within the group of 257, those tested with a male stranger had significantly higher scores than those tested with a female stranger; the effect size was small to moderate. Thus, we found that dogs responded differently to male and female strangers during this testing situation, but from a practical standpoint, our findings do not warrant adjustments in how shelters conduct or interpret tests for stranger-directed aggression. Pediatric providers' stances on HPV vaccination-related policies are largely unknown. To gain insight into pediatric providers' perspectives and potential recommendations for directed policy, we conducted a cross-sectional survey of the American Academy of Pediatrics members in New York. Almost all providers expressed confidence in discussing the HPV vaccine with patients (98.6%, n = 72). Among common barriers to vaccination, providers listed parental safety concerns (n = 60, 82.2%), vaccination not being required for school entry (n = 59, 80.8%), and moral opposition to vaccination (n = 48, 65.8%). Among all respondents, 29 (39.7%), 13 (17.8%), and 2 (2.7%) agreed the vaccine should be required for middle, high, and tertiary school entry, respectively. Support for pharmacist-provision of the vaccine varied, with 31 (42.5%) providers expressing support. Most providers supported adolescent self-consent to vaccination, (n = 67, 91.8%). Providers continued to encounter barriers to HPV vaccination and indicated support of HPV vaccination mandates for school entry, pharmacist provision of the vaccine, and adolescent self-consent to vaccination. Because both Babesia microti and Borrelia burgdorferi can be transmitted by the bite of a single coinfected Ixodes scapularis tick, an attempt was made to determine the frequency with which whole blood samples that tested positive for B. microti infection by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) would also test positive by PCR for B. burgdorferi infection. Over a 7-year period from 2013 to 2019, 119 different patients tested positive for B. microti infection by PCR on at least one blood sample. Among the 118 patients with a positive B. microti PCR blood sample that could also be tested by a qualitative PCR for B. burgdorferi, only one patient tested positive (0.85%, 95% CI 0.02 to 4.6%). Routine PCR testing of every B. microti PCR-positive blood specimen to detect B. burgdorferi coinfection appears to have a low yield, even in a highly endemic geographic area for both of these infections. Background: Recent clinical trials have demonstrated that tafamidis (Pfizer Inc., New York, NY, USA) reduced all-cause mortality and the number of cardiovascular hospitalizations compared with placebo in patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis. However, the optimal surrogate markers during tafamidis treatment remain unknown. Methods: Consecutive patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis who received tafamidis in our institute between May 2019 and December 2022 were retrospectively evaluated. The prognostic impact of an increase in troponin I levels during tafamidis therapy was evaluated. Results: A total of 18 patients (median age 77 years, 84% male) were included. For 14-month tafamidis therapy on median, cardiac troponin I levels increased in five patients. The cumulative incidence of all-cause hospitalization was significantly higher in the troponin-increased group than in the others (100% versus 33%, p < 0.0001). Troponin increase was independently associated with the cumulative incidence of all-cause hospitalization with an adjusted hazard ratio of 5.14 (95% confidence interval 1.02–25.9, p = 0.048). Conclusions: The increase in cardiac troponin levels may be a reasonable surrogate marker of response to tafamidis therapy in patients with transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rapid apple decline is a phenomenon characterized by a weakening of young apple trees in high density orchards, often followed by their quick collapse. The nature of this phenomenon remains unclear. In this work, we investigated the root system architecture (RSA) of declining and non-declining apple trees in two orchards in New York State. High-density orchard A consisted of 4-year-old 'Honeycrisp' on 'Malling 9 Nic29', and conventional orchard B consisted of 8-year-old 'Fuji' on 'Budagovsky 9'. In both orchards, a negative correlation (−0.4–−0.6) was observed between RSA traits and decline symptoms, suggesting that declining trees have weaker root systems. Scion trunk diameter at the graft union, total root length, and the length of fine and coarse roots were significantly (p < 0.05) reduced in declining trees in both orchards. Additionally, internal trunk necrosis at, above, and below the graft union was observed in declining trees in orchard A but not in orchard B. Finally, latent viruses were not associated with decline, as their occurrence was documented in declining and non-declining trees in orchard A, but not in orchard B. Together, these results showed weakened root systems of declining trees, suggesting that these trees may experience deficiencies in water and nutrient uptake, although distinct RSA and trunk health traits between the two orchards were noticeable. This paper introduces the Watermark Imaging System (WImSy) which can be used to photograph, document, and study sheets of paper. The WImSy provides surface images, raking light images, and transmitted light images of the paper, all in perfect alignment. We develop algorithms that exploit this alignment by combining several images together in a process that mimics both the "surface image removal" technique and the method of "high dynamic range" photographs. An improved optimization criterion and an automatic parameter selection procedure streamline the process and make it practical for art historians and conservators to extract the relevant information to study watermarks. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated in several experiments on images taken with the WImSy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the results are compared with manually optimized images. Onychomycosis is a common nail infection. Terbinafine-resistant dermatophyte infections pose an emerging global public health concern, but few cases have been described in the United States. We retrospectively reviewed and characterized clinical, histopathological, and mycological features of patients with mycologically confirmed onychomycosis who failed oral terbinafine treatment for onychomycosis at a U.S. academic nail referral center and ascertained for terbinafine-resistant isolates. During 1 June 2022–31 January 2023 at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York City, USA, 96 patients with mycologically confirmed onychomycosis were treated with oral terbinafine. Among 64 patients with adequate follow-up, 36 had clinical or complete cure. Of 28 patients who failed treatment, 17 underwent terbinafine resistance testing. Trichophyton rubrum with terbinafine resistance-conferring mutations was isolated from two patients. Overall, terbinafine failures for onychomycosis were relatively common, with some cases associated with terbinafine-resistant T. rubrum infections. These findings underscore the need for a clinical awareness of this emerging problem and public health efforts to monitor and prevent spread. We highlight the importance of diagnostic testing and species identification for onychomycosis patients and the increasingly important role of fungal identification and susceptibility testing to guide therapy. Simple Summary: Onion maggot (Delia antiqua) can be a devastating pest of onion and related crops around the world. While management of this pest typically relies on insecticides to control these pests, growing resistance and desire for alternative control strategies has motivated a search for new methods to manage them effectively. We investigated the potential of using tiny beneficial roundworms called entomopathogenic nematodes to control onion maggots. We conducted surveys in onion-growing areas to see if these nematodes were naturally present, and also tested their compatibility with commonly used insecticides. Our field trials demonstrated that applying entomopathogenic nematodes can significantly reduce the number of onion plants destroyed by onion maggots, leading to higher crop yields. These nematodes could be a useful tool for onion farmers, whether they practice conventional or organic farming. When combined with other strategies like insecticide seed treatments, the use of entomopathogenic nematodes can provide effective control of onion maggots while boosting crop productivity. Onion maggot (Delia antiqua) is a prominent pest of allium crops in temperate zones worldwide. Management of this pest relies on prophylactic insecticide applications at planting that target the first generation. Because effective options are limited, growers are interested in novel tactics such as deployment of entomopathogenic nematodes. We surveyed muck soils where onions are typically grown to determine if entomopathogenic nematode species were present, and then evaluated the compatibility of entomopathogenic nematode species with the insecticides commonly used to manage D. antiqua. We also evaluated the efficacy of these entomopathogenic nematodes for reducing D. antiqua infestations in the field. No endemic entomopathogenic nematodes were detected in surveys of muck fields in New York. Compatibility assays indicated that, although insecticides such as spinosad and, to some extent, cyromazine did cause mortality of entomopathogenic nematodes, these insecticides did not affect infectivity of the entomopathogenic nematodes. Field trials indicated that applications of entomopathogenic nematodes can reduce the percentage of onion plants killed by D. antiqua from 6% to 30%. Entomopathogenic nematodes reduced D. antiqua damage and increased end of season yield over two field seasons. Applications of entomopathogenic nematodes may be a viable option for reducing D. antiqua populations in conventional and organic systems. Together with other management tactics, like insecticide seed treatments, applications of entomopathogenic nematodes can provide a yield boost and a commercially acceptable level of D. antiqua control.
