The Daliang Shan is a tectonic unit that connects the active southeastern Tibetan Plateau with the stable South China block. As a newly generated (formed later than the Xianshuihe–Xiaojiang active fault system) seismotectonic zone induced by the Tibetan tectonics, the detailed constraints of the crustal deformation are central to the understanding of the kinematics and dynamics of the Tibetan expansion. This paper establishes and analyses a high-spatial resolution global positioning system (GPS) velocity field from a dense GPS network in this region. Our modelling results indicate that, in contrast to the equivalent sinistral strike-slip rate of approximately 5 mm yr–1 on the Anninghe–Zemuhe and Daliangshan faults, their inferred interseismic locking depth varies within a large range. The southern segment of the Anninghe Fault and the middle segment of the Daliangshan Fault have deep locking depths of ∼13 km, indicating that the seismic risk is high in these areas. In addition, the detectable counter-clockwise rotation rate of 0.35 ± 0.12° Myr–1 of the Mabian block makes a significant contribution of ∼50 per cent to the strike-slip motion on its boundary faults. This counter-clockwise rotation may be induced by a left-lateral shear gradient with southeastward motion relative to the South China-fixed reference frame, indicating the significance of a simple-shear pattern in exploring the kinematics of the encroachment of the Tibetan tectonics upon a stable block (craton). This paper reviews progress in the study of Tibetan Plateau (TP) climate dynamics over the past decade. Several theoretical frameworks, including thermal adaptation and the TP sensible heat (SH) driving air-pump, have been developed to identify the mechanisms responsible for the circulation anomaly produced by thermal forcing of the TP. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the thermal effects of large-scale orography, including the Tibetan and Iranian Plateaus (TIP), are crucial for the formation of the East Asian and South Asian summer monsoons (SASM) because the surface SH of the TIP is the major driver of the water vapor transport required for the genesis of the north branch of the SASM.The large-scale orography of the TP affects the Asian climate through thermal forcing in spring and summer, and mechanical forcing in winter. The TP forcing can also influence the Asian summer monsoon (ASM) onset over the Bay of Bengal (BOB) by enhancing the BOB warm pool at the surface and by modulating the South Asian High (SAH) in the upper troposphere. On intra-seasonal timescales, the TP thermal forcing significantly modulates spring rainfall in southern China and generates the biweekly oscillation of the SAH in summer. Despite climate warming, the atmospheric heat source over the TP, particularly the spring SH, exhibits a clear weakening trend from the 1980s to 2000s. This weakening of the spring SH contributed to the anomalous 'dry in the north' and 'wet in the south' rainfall pattern observed over East China. This paper examines the relationship between seismogenic thickness, lithosphere structure and rheology in central and northeastern Asia. We accurately determine earthquake depth distributions which reveal important rheological variations in the lower crust. These variations exert a fundamental control on the active tectonics and the morphological evolution of the continents. We consider 323 earthquakes across the Tibetan Plateau, the Tien Shan and their forelands as well as the Baikal Rift, NE Siberia and the Laptev Sea and present the source parameters of 94 of these here for the first time. These parameters have been determined through body wave inversion, the identification of depth phases or the modelling of regional waveforms. Lower crustal earthquakes are found to be restricted to the forelands in areas undergoing shortening, and to locations where rifting coincides with abrupt changes in lithosphere thickness, such as the NE Baikal Rift and W Laptev Sea. The lower crust in these areas is seismogenic at temperatures that may be as high as 600°C, suggesting that it is anhydrous, and is likely to have great long-term strength. Lower crustal earthquakes are therefore a useful proxy indicating strong lithosphere in places that are too small in areal extent for this to be confirmed independently by estimating effective elastic thickness from gravity-topography relations. The variation in crustal rheology indicated by the distribution of lower-crustal earthquakes has many implications ranging from the support of mountain belts and the formation of steep mountain fronts, to the localization and orientation of rifting. On the southeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau lies a large region which seismicity and GPS data show to be actively deforming. This paper describes the active faulting in the region, and how it relates to the velocity field observed with GPS. In places the velocity field is accommodated by rotations about vertical axes, and most or all of the strain at the surface in the region appears to be released seismically. GPS velocities are then compared to velocities calculated using a model for deformation driven by gravitational driving forces. Using rheologies estimated from experimentally derived mineral flow laws, the model provides velocities that are in good agreement with observed GPS velocities. It is not possible to uniquely determine the rheology or flow velocity at depth, and there are two forms of model solution which match the observed horizontal surface velocities. In one of these, vertical planes deform by pure shear, and in the other vertical gradients of horizontal velocity are present within the crust. Two distinct regions of normal-faulting earthquakes are present in the region, and have mechanisms which are most easily explained by gravity-driven deformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Ordos Block is located at the intersection of the Tibetan Plateau, the South China Plate and the North China Craton. The deep deformation of its surrounding areas is geologically complicated. Seismic anisotropy provides information about past and present deformation of the upper mantle and helps to better understand deep deformation processes. We obtained the anisotropic pattern at high resolution within and surrounding the Ordos Block by analysing teleseismic data from ∼710 newly deployed temporary seismic stations based on SKS phases from ∼86 earthquakes. The central and eastern Ordos Block with a relatively thick and rigid lithosphere is characterized by a weak anisotropy. In the western part of the Ordos Block, the fast-wave polarization direction is dominantly NW–SE. We believe the lithosphere in the western part of the Ordos Block may have undergone significant deformation caused by expansion and compression of the Tibetan Plateau. Near the Datong Basin, the delay time is 0.92 s and the fast-wave polarization direction is mainly oriented NW–SE, perpendicular to the NE-directed compression of the Tibetan Plateau and parallel to the basin extension direction. We speculate that this anisotropy is related to the long-range effect of NE compression of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau on the low-velocity upper mantle in this area. The weak anisotropy in the central part of the Shanxi Rift indicates that the thickness and mechanical strength of the high-velocity lithosphere are higher than in the southern and northern regions. Tarim Craton is a Precambrian block situated in northwest China, just north of the Tibetan Plateau, where a large sedimentary basin with abundant hydrocarbon potential has developed. Accurate heat flow data for Tarim is vital for understanding the lithospheric evolution and hydrocarbon generation in this area; however, there were unavailable until now, due to a lack of high quality steady-state temperature logging data. Here, we report 10 new heat flow values derived from steady-state temperature logging and measured thermal conductivity data. New heat flow values range from 40.1 to 49.4 mW m-2, with a mean of 43.1 ± 3.0 mW m-2. In addition, radiogenic heat production from the sediments accounts for 20 per cent of the observed surface heat flow, whilst the mantle heat flow is estimated to be as low as 6-15mWm-2; this indicates a dominant contribution from crustal heat, to the observed heat flow. The average heat flow and crustal temperature in the Tarim Craton are markedly lower than those in the Tibetan Plateau, whilst the calculated rheological strength of the lithosphere, beneath Tarim, is sufficiently large to resist the elevation-induced gravitational potential energy difference between Tarim and Tibet. This inherited thermal and rheological contrast, between the craton and Plateau, can be traced back to before the India-Asia collision; this accounts for the differential active deformation pattern in the Tarim Craton and adjacent areas. Continental China consists of a complex amalgamation of geotectonic units and has experienced strong and widespread tectonic deformation since the Mesozoic. To understand its geological structure better, we conducted a systematic receiver function analysis using a total of 83 509 teleseismic traces in the time period of 2009–2010 recorded by 798 broad-band stations, among which 749 stations are permanent digital seismic stations from China Earthquake Networks Center and 49 stations were temporarily deployed in northern Central Tibet. A standard H–κ stacking method is employed to determine Moho depth and Vp/Vs ratio underneath each station from teleseismic receiver function analysis. The obtained Moho depth variations are generally consistent with those determined from various deep seismic soundings profiles. We combine our results with those from previous receiver functions studies to produce a high-resolution map of Moho depth and Vp/Vs variation for continental China. Compared to previous studies, the new study concerns many more stations and the resulting Moho depth map has much higher lateral resolution, especially in the eastern China. Overall, the Moho depth variation has a remarkable correlation with major tectonic units in continental China. For example, across the well-known gravity gradient line in east China, there is a clear shift in Moho depths. One of the major geophysical discoveries concerning the Tibetan Plateau is the existence of unusually weak layers in the mid- to lower crust, a characteristic widely interpreted as the result of crustal melting. This interpretation, however, remains highly contentious, particularly when applied to northern Tibet where crustally derived magmatic rocks are scarce. Here we report the finding of tourmaline-bearing mica and biotite rhyolites in the Bukadaban–Malanshan area, southern Kunlun Range, near the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Zircon U–Pb and whole-rock or mineral 40Ar–39Ar analyses suggest that these rocks erupted between 9·0 and 1·5 Ma. These rocks are geochemically similar to Himalayan leucogranites (interpreted as crustal melts), with strongly peraluminous compositions, high SiO2 contents (69·0–76·0 wt %), and clear negative Eu, Ba and Sr anomalies. They have low ϵNd (–5·8 to –8·6) and high 87Sr/86Sr (0·7125–0·7178), 206Pb/204Pb (18·59–18·70), 207Pb/204Pb (15·49–15·63) and 208Pb/204Pb (38·31–38·74) isotopic compositions as well as magmatic zircon ϵHf (–0·7 to –5·0) compositions similar to those of global marine sediments and Proterozoic–Triassic sedimentary rocks in northern Tibet. We suggest that the Bukadaban–Malanshan rhyolites were generated by dehydration melting of metasedimentary rocks at 0·5–1·2 GPa and 740–863°C. Our data not only confirm the occurrence of a partially molten zone in the mid- to lower crust beneath northern Tibet but also constrain the crustal melting to have existed from middle Miocene to Quaternary times. Adopting the crustal flow model, we further argue the importance of outward flowing of the melt-weakened crust in the formation of crustal inflation, surface uplift, and earthquakes along the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. SUMMARY We developed an integrated technique for estimating crustal anisotropy with a horizontal axis using radial (R) and transverse (T) receiver functions. The technique includes computing three individual and one joint objective function (JOF) and a reliability analysis of the estimated anisotropy. The individual objective functions (IOFs) are designed to: (1) maximize the peak energy of the stacked R receiver function after a cosine moveout correction in the Ps arrival time; (2) to maximize the correlation of the radial receiver functions after a full correction of anisotropy or (3) to minimize the total energy of transverse receiver functions stacked after a removal of crustal anisotropy. The JOF was computed by a weighted average of the three IOFs, and the reliability analysis uses the principle that stacking coherent signals can lead to an increase of signal-to-noise ratio. We applied the technique to synthetic receiver functions generated with 30-60 per cent white noise from a variety of anisotropic and heterogeneous models. The synthetic tests indicate that the proposed technique has good capability to recover the input models. Despite the presence of random and other coherent noises, such as those caused by inhomogeneous structures, in the data, the technique can always provide accurate estimates of crustal anisotropy. We applied the technique to two permanent seismic stations in western China and found significant crustal anisotropy beneath one station located at the northern edge of the Tibetan plateau. The observed fast polarization direction at this station follows the direction of the maximum horizontal tensile stress, suggesting that the observed seismic anisotropy is likely caused by mineral alignment in the lower crust. The station situated in the Sichuan basin, on the other hand, shows little to no seismic anisotropy, which may suggest that the crust beneath the basin is nearly rigid with very little deformation. Phylogenetic analyses based on mitochondrial genes were conducted to reconstruct species relationships within the aphid genus Mollitrichosiphum (Aphididae, Greenideinae). MP and Bayesian analysis results using COI and Cyt b datasets, and combined MP, ML and Bayesian analysis of both were consistent with a morphologically supported monophyly. Subdivision of the genus into two subgenera was strongly supported. Samples of each included species form monophyletic clade, respectively; and the result implied the valid status of related species in this genus. These results suggest some surprising hypotheses regarding the phylogeography of the genus: the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, reorganization of major river catchments and the isolation of Hainan Island were probably important factors contributing to the diversification of species in this genus. SUMMARY In 2001 November a magnitude 7.8 earthquake ruptured a 400 km long portion of the Kunlun fault, northeastern Tibet. In this study, we analyse over five years of post-seismic geodetic data and interpret the observed surface deformation in terms of stress relaxation in the thick Tibetan lower crust. We model GPS time-series (first year) and InSAR line of sight measurements (years two to five) and infer that the most likely mechanism of post-seismic stress relaxation is time-dependent distributed creep of viscoelastic material in the lower crust. Since a single relaxation time is not sufficient to model the observed deformation, viscous flow is modelled by a lower crustal Burgers rheology, which has two material relaxation times. The optimum model has a transient viscosity 9 × 1017 Pa s, steady-state viscosity 1 × 1019 Pa s and a ratio of long term to Maxwell shear modulus of 2:3. This model gives a good fit to GPS stations south of the Kunlun Fault, while displacements at stations north of the fault are over-predicted. We attribute this asymmetry in the GPS residual to lateral heterogeneity in rheological structure across the southern margin of the Qaidam Basin, with thinner crust/higher viscosities beneath the basin than beneath the Tibetan Plateau. Deep afterslip localized in a shear zone beneath the fault rupture gives a reasonable match to the observed InSAR data, but the slip model does not fit the earlier GPS data well. We conclude that while some localized afterslip likely occurred during the early post-seismic phase, the bulk of the observed deformation signal is due to viscous flow in the lower crust. To investigate regional variability in rheological structure, we also analyse post-seismic displacements following the 1997 Manyi earthquake that occurred 250 km west of the Kokoxili rupture. We find that viscoelastic properties are the same as for the Kokoxili area except for the transient viscosity, which is 5 × 1017 Pa s. The viscosities estimated for the Manyi and Kokoxili areas are consistent with constraints obtained from other earthquakes in the northwest and south central parts of the Tibetan Plateau. The Sichuan earthquake, Mw 7.9, struck the Longmen Shan (LMS) range front, China, on 2008 May 12, affecting an area of moderate historical seismicity where little active shortening has been previously reported. Recent studies based on space geodesy have succeeded in retrieving the far field surface displacements caused by the earthquake, but the near field (±25 km from the faults) coseismic surface displacement is still poorly constrained. Thus, shallow fault geometry and shallow coseismic slip are still poorly resolved. Here, for the first time for this earthquake, we combine C and L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar offsets data from ascending and descending tracks to invert for the 3-D surface displacement in the near coseismic field of the Sichuan earthquake. Our data, coupled with a simple elastic dislocation model, provide new results strongly suggesting the presence of a blind thrust striking along the range front and being active at depth during the earthquake. The presence of a rupture on a blind thrust brings new evidence for an out-of-sequence thrusting event and new elements for interpreting the tectonic strain partitioning in the LMS, which has important implications both for seismic hazard assessment and long-term evolution of the mountain belt. We use InSAR and body wave modelling to determine the faulting parameters for a series of five 5.9-7.1 normal faulting earthquakes that occurred during 2008, including the March 20 Yutian earthquake ( 7.1), one of the largest normal faulting events to have occurred recently on the continents. We also study three earlier normal faulting earthquakes that occurred in southern Tibet between 1992 and 2005. Coseismic deformation for each of these eight events is measured with ascending and descending interferograms from ENVISAT, ERS and ALOS SAR data. Elastic dislocation modelling of the line-of-sight InSAR displacements and body wave seismological modelling of and waves are used to estimate fault parameters and are found to be in good agreement for all the events studied. The use of InSAR to measure deformation allows a relatively precise determination of the fault location in addition to resolving the focal plane ambiguity. Only five of the eight events are associated with a clear surface topographic feature, suggesting that an underestimation of the amount of extension would result from using the surface expressions of normal faulting alone. The observations, in all cases, are consistent with slip on planar surfaces, with dips in the range 40-50°, that penetrates the uppermost crust to a depth of 10-15 km. We find no evidence for active low-angle (dip less than 30°) normal faulting. The contribution of the normal faulting to overall extension estimated by summing seismic moments over earthquakes for the past 43 yr is 3-4 mm yr−1, or 15-20 per cent of the rates of extension measured across the plateau using GPS. 85 per cent of the moment release in normal faulting over the past 43 yr has occurred in regions whose surface height exceeds 5 km. This observation adds weight to the suggestions that the widespread normal faulting on the plateau is the result of variations in the gravitational potential energy of the lithosphere. Background and Aims: Shrubs and dwarf shrubs are wider spread on the Tibetan Plateau than trees and hence offer a unique opportunity to expand the present dendrochronological network into extreme environments beyond the survival limit of trees. Alpine shrublands on the Tibetan Plateau are characterized by rhododendron species. The shallow seismic velocity structure of the Kunlun fault zone (KLFZ) was jointly deduced from seismic refraction profiling and the records of trapped waves that were excited by five explosions. The data were collected after the 2001 Kunlun Ms8.1 earthquake in the northern Tibetan Plateau. Seismic phases for the in-line record sections (26 records up to a distance of 15 km) along the fault zone were analysed, and 1-D P- and S-wave velocity models of shallow crust within the fault zone were determined by using the seismic refraction method. Sixteen seismic stations were deployed along the off-line profile perpendicular to the fault zone. Fault-zone trapped waves appear clearly on the record sections, which were simulated with a 3-D finite difference algorithm. Quantitative analysis of the correlation coefficients of the synthetic and observed trapped waveforms indicates that the Kunlun fault-zone width is 300 m, and S-wave quality factor Q within the fault zone is 15. Significantly, S-wave velocities within the fault zone are reduced by 30–45 per cent from surrounding rocks to a depth of at least 1–2 km, while P-wave velocities are reduced by 7–20 per cent. A fault-zone with such P- and S-low velocities is an indication of high fluid pressure because Vs is affected more than Vp. The low-velocity and low- Q zone in the KLFZ model is the effect of multiple ruptures along the fault trace of the 2001 Ms8.1 Kunlun earthquake. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cenozoic, post-collisional, potassic and ultrapotassic igneous rocks in the North Qiangtang, Songpan–Ganzi and North Kunlun terranes of the northern Tibetan Plateau are distributed along a semi-continuous, east–west-trending, volcanic belt, which is over 1200 km in length. Spatially, there is a close association with major strike-slip faults, thrust faults and pull-apart basins. The ages of these magmatic rocks range from 45 Ma to the present (the youngest known eruption occurred in 1951); they are shoshonitic, compositionally similar to K-rich subduction-related magmas, and range in SiO2 from 44 to 66 wt %. There is a relative enrichment of large ion lithophile elements (LILE) and light rare earth elements (LREE) in the most primitive magmatic rocks (MgO >6 wt %) in the North Qiangtang terrane compared with those in the Songpan–Ganzi and North Kunlun terranes; correspondingly, the primitive magmas have higher 87Sr/86Sr and 206Pb/204Pb, and lower 143Nd/144Nd ratios in the North Qiangtang terrane than in the Songpan–Ganzi and North Kunlun terranes. The dominant factors that control the geochemical characteristics of the magmas are an enriched asthenospheric mantle source composition, the degree of partial melting of this source, and the combined processes of crustal assimilation and fractional crystallization (AFC). Enrichment of the asthenosphere is considered to have occurred by incorporation of subducted sediments into the mantle wedge above a subducted slab of Indian lithosphere during India–Asia convergence. Continental lithospheric mantle, metasomatically enriched during earlier episodes of subduction, may have also contributed a source component to the magmas. Trace element modelling indicates that the mantle source of the most primitive magmas in the North Qiangtang terrane contained higher amounts of subducted sediment (0·5–10%) compared with those in the Songpan–Ganzi and North Kunlun terranes (<2%). The degrees of partial melting required to generate the primitive potassic and ultrapotassic magmas from the enriched mantle sources range from <0·1% to ∼15% in the three major basement terranes. Energy-constrained AFC model calculations show that the more evolved magmatic rocks (MgO <6 wt %) are the results of AFC processes in the middle crust in the North Qiangtang terrane and the upper crust in the Songpan–Ganzi and North Kunlun terranes. We propose that the ultimate driving force for the generation of the post-collisional potassium-rich magmatism in north Tibet is the continuous northward underthrusting of the Indian continental lithosphere following India–Asia collision. This underthrusting resulted in upwelling of hot asthenosphere beneath north Tibet, squeezed up between the advancing Indian lithosphere and the backstop of the rigid Asian continental lithosphere. Two apparently distinct, sub-parallel, paleo-subduction zones can be recognized along the northern margin of the Tibetan Plateau: the North Qilian Suture Zone (oceanic-type) with ophiolitic mélanges and high-pressure eclogites and blueschists in the north, and the North Qaidam Belt (continental-type) in the south, an ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic terrane comprising pelitic and granitic gneisses, eclogites and garnet peridotites. Eclogites from both belts have protoliths broadly similar to mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) or oceanic island basalts (OIB) in composition with overlapping metamorphic ages (480–440 Ma, with weighted mean ages of 464 ± 6 Ma for North Qilian and 457 ± 7 Ma for North Qaidam), determined by zircon U–Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe dating. Coesite-bearing zircon grains in pelitic gneisses from the North Qaidam UHP Belt yield a peak metamorphic age of 423 ± 6 Ma, 40 Myr younger than the age of eclogite formation, and a retrograde age of 403 ± 9 Ma. These data, combined with regional relationships, allow us to infer that these two parallel belts may represent an evolutionary sequence from oceanic subduction to continental collision, and continental underthrusting, to final exhumation. The Qilian–Qaidam Craton was probably a fragment of the Rodinia supercontinent with a passive margin and extended oceanic lithosphere in the north, which was subducted beneath the North China Craton to depths >100 km at c. 423 Ma and exhumed at c. 403 Ma (zircon rim ages in pelitic gneiss). Dynamic stresses developed in the deep crust as a consequence of flow of weak lower crust may explain anomalously high topography and extensional structures localized along orogenic plateau margins. With lubrication equations commonly used to describe viscous flow in a thin-gap geometry, we model dynamic stresses associated with the obstruction of lower crustal channel flow due to rheological heterogeneity. Dynamic stresses depend on the mean velocity , viscosity (μ) and channel thickness ( h), uniquely through the term . These stresses are then applied to the base of an elastic upper crust and the deflection of the elastic layer is computed to yield the predicted dynamic topography. We compare model calculations with observed topography of the eastern Tibetan Plateau margin where we interpret channel flow of the deep crust to be inhibited by the rigid Sichuan Basin. Model results suggest that as much 1500 m of dynamic topography across a region of several tens to a hundred kilometres wide may be produced for lower crustal material with a viscosity of flowing in a 15 km thick channel around a rigid cylindrical block at an average rate of 80 mm yr−1. We use broad-band teleseismic data recorded at eight sites along a north–south profile from Karimganj (24.84°N, 92.34°E), south of the eastern Shillong Plateau, to Bomdilla (27.27°N, 92.41°E) in the eastern Lesser Himalaya, to determine the seismic characteristics of the crust in northeastern India. We also analyse data from the Chinese Digital Seismic Network station at Lhasa and INDEPTHII stations located on the southern Tibetan Plateau north of our profile, to extend the seismic images of the crust further northwards. Although the northeastern Indian stations and the Tibetan stations do not lie along a linear profile across the Himalaya, the well-recognized uniformity of the Himalaya along strike make this comparison of the two profiles meaningful. Receiver functions calculated from these data show that the crust is thinnest (∼35–38 km) beneath the Shillong Plateau. Receiver functions at Cherrapunji, on the southern edge of the Shillong Plateau, have a strong azimuthal dependence. Those from northern backazimuth events show that the Moho beneath the southernmost Shillong Plateau is at a depth of∼38 km while receiver functions from southern backazimuth events indicate that the Moho beneath the northernmost Bengal Basin is at a depth of∼44 km. Receiver functions from sites on the Brahmaputra Valley demonstrate that the Moho is deeper by∼5–7 km than below the Shillong Plateau, a result which agrees with the hypothesis that the Shillong Plateau is supported by shearing stress on two steep faults that cut through the crust. Further north of the eastern Himalayan foredeep, the Moho dips gently northwards, reaching a depth of∼48 km beneath Bomdilla in the Lesser Himalaya, and 88 km below Lhasa in Tibet. Using the crustal velocity models obtained from receiver function inversions, we redetermined focal depths of well-recorded earthquakes across this part of the Indo-Tibetan collision zone and find all of these to occur within the crust.
