This paper explores the connections between archival research and teaching as an adjunct faculty member and mother. The form of the essay is an example of the "I-Search paper," a first-person account of the research process. In I-Search papers, authors start with the "search story," where they explain their initial research questions, then describe their "search results" in detail, including the primary sources they found, and end with a reflection on the research process. This essay is two I-Search papers in one—bringing together the experience of reading about students' historical research experiences with the author's own version of a research story. The essay is about teaching and research and their intersections, and especially what teaching has taught the author about research. The account of the individual research experience touches on the archival experiences of frustration and boredom, and the tension between wanting to find something in the archives and coming away with something else, and ends with a reflection on how our personal circumstances can impact our research. The Hughenden Collection of Disraeli Papers at the Bodleian Library in Oxford comprises over 50,000 items relating to the life and work of Benjamin Disraeli and his family. This article tracks hair through the Hughenden Collection in order to explore the collecting habits of Mary Anne Disraeli. It argues that reading Mary Anne Disraeli's story through hair – both hair as object, held in an archive and hair as represented in archival text – reveals aspects of that story occluded by reading only those archival texts with self-evident documentary value. It thus makes the case for a holistic reading of the Disraeli archive, and Victorian collections of personal papers more generally, by taking Mary Anne Disraeli as its central case study. In so doing it also illuminates her story, and points to the necessity of reading the stories of forgotten women through archival silences and absences. Section I reviews recent scholarship on hair in nineteenth-century Britain in order to contextualize Mary Anne Disraeli's case. Section II anatomizes the Hughenden hair collection in order to illuminate Mary Anne's history, her impulses as a collector, and the extent to which her activities complicate scholarly narratives about the sentimental commodification of Victorian hair. Section III gestures towards recent work on the archive and material culture to tease out the consequences of her example for our reading of the archive and our understanding of the texture of Victorian ‘thing culture’ more generally. The article profiles the Norman Bel Geddes Papers at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin as of August 2012. The article states that the papers consist of almost 800 boxes containing the records of U.S. industrial designer Norman Bel Geddes. The article discusses the participation of Bel Geddes in the compilation of his records, the filing system employed by Bel Geddes, and the dominance of Bel Geddes's records of documents from his "Futurama" exhibit at the 1939-1940 World's Fair in New York City. The article discusses opportunities for historical research within the records, access to the collection, and the significance of Bel Geddes to 20th century design concepts.

The opening of the Sraffa archive has allowed the production of credible narratives of the development of Sraffa’s thought based on documentary evidence. The archive is complex, especially in the case of the papers relating to Production of Commodities by Means of Commodities (PCMC), but the author’s paperwork helps guide us through the development of his ideas, affirming the causal relationship between thought and archive. The complex interrelationships between materials in the archive make a painstaking, scholarly approach necessary, but rewarding, allowing authors to use material of high evidential value to corroborate the cases they are making. The archive has primarily been used by historians of economic thought. What are the institutional features that incentivize established powers to join rising powers' new institutions? Going beyond alliance versus rivalry, this paper develops a novel theory in answering this question. We argue that the established power must address two primary design issues: 1. how to navigate the control and burden-sharing trade-off and 2. how to limit the potential diffusion of power by rendering the new institution "complementary" to the existing order. To the extent that these issues are resolved in line with the established power's (EP's) preferences, the EP is more likely to join the rising powers' institutions. We support our theory with an in-depth case analysis of the Japanese-led Asian Development Bank, utilizing primarily archival materials. The archives of global history I The inaccessibility of many traditional, paper archives during the pandemic is a prompt for us to think about archives in the most expansive sense. Non-paper archives were a recurring theme: built environment as archive, landscape as archive (in Tereza Valny's work), inaccessibility as archive. Reading the acknowledgements section of any book that might be categorized as global history, one comes across a long and impressive list of archives, frequently spanning multiple continents. Despite the growing number of publications and seminars seeking to define the field, the "archive of global history" has not been conceptualized or theorized to the same extent as, say, the archive of intellectual history, or the archive of African history. Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ambient or altered environmental conditions on the inactivation of SARS‐CoV‐2 applied to materials common in libraries, archives and museums. Methods and Results: Porous and non‐porous materials (e.g. paper, plastic protective book cover) were inoculated with approximately 1 × 105 TCID50 SARS CoV‐2 (USA‐WA1/2020), dried, placed within test chamber in either a stacked or unstacked configuration, and exposed to environmental conditions ranging from 4 to 29°C at 40 ± 10% relative humidity. The amount of infectious SARS‐CoV‐2 was then assessed at various timepoints from 0 to 10 days. Ambient conditions resulted in varying inactivation rates per material type. Virus inactivation rate decreased when materials were stacked or at colder temperatures. Virus inactivation rate increased when materials were unstacked or at warmer temperatures. Conclusions: SARS‐CoV‐2 at ambient conditions resulted in the inactivation of virus below limit of quantitation (LOQ) for all materials by Day 8. In the search for their loved ones, the families of the disappeared create, gather, and share records. The Colombian 2016 peace agreement opened spaces for memory practices that help promote a record-keeping culture at the grassroots among families. These personal collections are private spaces of struggle for memory, resistance, and justice. This article aims to make visible this documentation process undertaken by families, by giving these collections a name— archives of the disappeared— contextualizing their creation, purposes, and uses. By focusing on the case of Colombia, I follow a general chronology of a search for the disappeared to understand who the creators are, and trace the creation, accumulation, and uses of these archives based on existing literature, testimonies and interviews with family members, family organizations and NGOs. I argue that these archives are foundational to societies that have undergone human rights violations as they eventually form the basis of much of the NGO and transitional justice documentation, and provide counter narratives that offer an insight into the search process. The concept I propose, archives of the disappeared , is a starting concept to open up reflection and engagement regarding these archives, which although written about in the literature have yet to be conceptualized separately from NGO archives, transitional justice archives or human rights archives in general. Between 1814 and 1831, French slave traders trafficked approximately 200,000 individuals. Among those, a small but still surprising number stopped over in Haiti on their return voyage after selling captives elsewhere in the Americas. Using the case of the brigantine the Marcelin as its prime example, this article shows how legitimate commodity trading with Haiti served as a cover for illicit French slaving in the era of slave-trade abolition. The article situates the Marcelin within a "second slave trade," which emerged as European countries abolished the transatlantic trade on paper but continued it in practice. Because the second slave trade was illegal, it left a very limited historical trace. This article reconstructs its contours from fragmentary archival evidence, while arguing that, ultimately, the archive itself does violence to the history of the nineteenth-century slave trade. This paper provides a guide to finding historical records of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the US biomedical research agency funded by the federal government, and one of the world's largest research funding bodies. Such records are important to an understanding of the development of medicine and biomedicine after the Second World War, yet they can be difficult to find in the organizational maze that is the NIH. This article provides information on where records might be found, the ways in which such records might be obtained, and how the NIH manages the vast quantity of records it produces. The Jewish Relief Unit (JRU) was an Anglo-Jewish humanitarian agency of 213 members that operated across Europe during 1945/50, particularly in the British Zone of Occupation in Germany. JRU staff cared for the hundreds of thousands of Jewish Displaced Persons (DPs) who lingered in United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) assembly centres such as Belsen before their eventual departure for the United States or the new state of Israel. The JRU has remained a somewhat understudied body relative to other Jewish organizations active in DP camps and this article, based on personnel files and field reports archived at London's Wiener Library and the London Metropolitan Archives, centres JRU aid workers as valuable objects of study in their own right, in line with increased historiographical interest in the backgrounds and world-views of postwar UNRRA operatives. Through an emphasis on materials related to and produced by individual JRU staff members and on the intimate and everyday character of their work, this article suggests that the JRU work among Jewish DPs in Germany was more substantive and consequential than has often been appreciated. The article focuses on the policies and politics involved in collecting literary manuscripts and collections of contemporary British writers. It traces the changing attitude in modern literary manuscript collecting in institutions such as the British Museum and the Arts Council and looks into proposed legislative bills to convince writers to contain their works in Great Britain. It also discusses the course of action taken by Philip Larkin and British Museum curators to build the new collection.

The article presents information about the archives of the National Irish Visual Arts Library (NIVAL) at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin, Ireland. In August 1997, NIVAL was formally established in order to collect, store and provide public access to information regarding twentieth-century and contemporary Irish art and design. Included in the archives of NIVAL are monographs, periodicals, video recordings, posters and papers owned by artists and designers. Access software is used by NCAD for its NIVAL archive.

We present the launch of the Hyper Suprime-Cam Legacy Archive (HSCLA), a public archive of processed, science-ready data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC). HSC is an optical wide-field imager installed at the prime focus of the Subaru Telescope and has been in operation since 2014. While ∼1/3 of the total observing time of HSC has been used for the Subaru Strategic Program (SSP), the remainder of the time is used for Principal Investigator (PI)-based programs. We have processed the data from these PI-based programs and make the processed, high-quality data available to the community through HSCLA. The current version of HSCLA includes data taken in the first year of science operation, 2014. We provide both individual and coadd images as well as photometric catalogs. The photometric catalog from the coadd is loaded to the database, which offers a fast access to the large catalog. There are other online tools such as an image browser and an image cutout tool and they will be useful for science analyses. The coadd images reach 24–27th magnitudes at 5σ for point sources and cover approximately 580 square degrees in at least one filter with 150 million objects in total. We perform extensive quality assurance tests and verify that the photometric and astrometric quality of the data is good enough for most scientific explorations. However, the data are not without problems and users are referred to the list of known issues before exploiting the data for science. The authors emphasize the necessity of adopting a new data-archiving policy which encourages authors and researchers to share DNA sequence data that they have collected. They believe that data are key to understanding the natural world, as well as invaluable to science for meta-analysis. new uses and quality control. Such men needed to understand previously used handwriting, Latin language, chronological systems, and seals for organizing and referencing French seigneurial archives. This article analyses how judicial activity in domestic prosecution of dictatorship-era human rights violations shapes and contributes to the accumulation and verification of archival evidence. In particular, it discusses the ways in which trials challenge the status of existing sources of truth, such as truth commission findings, as well as producing new kinds of information and new sources of doubt about crimes of the recent past. The paper argues that novel 'truth orders' are produced by transitional artifices such as the truth commission and other administrative instances. Trials constitute another such order, with a separate and in some senses more socially established claim to legitimacy. It is in some senses inevitable, therefore, that competing truth claims arise when prosecutions are added to the post-transitional mix. Particular aspects of the technically challenging process of investigating long-ago crimes introduce additional professional considerations. The procedures and protocols applicable to forensic science and police work must be assimilated and evaluated by judges charged with turning old and new data into usable evidence. The particular rules of evidence, probatory value, and standards of proof that judges are mandated by law to apply challenges and transforms, in sometimes unpredictable ways, the social legitimacy or veracity previously attributed to such data. This challenge is particularly significant when the imperative of judicial truth interacts with sources of social truth. The production and diffusion of verdicts in criminal trials affects public perceptions of past and present judicial neutrality and legitimacy, and also alters relatives', survivors' and bystanders' views about past events and present responsibilities. Investigations carried out under written judicial procedure lead, eventually, to the production of a new meta-archive, a repository of tested and validated truth which may reinforce, challenge, complete or utterly discredit previous versions of events. The article examines a new document from the city archives of Salisbury in Wiltshire, England regarding the players who were touring with a company which claimed to be Queen Anne's men. These players include Thomas Swinnerton, Martin Slaughter, William Perry and William Parr. Topics discussed include an order issued by the Earl of Pembroke Sir William Herbert that warns town authorities against these players on July 16, 1616, and the difference of the new document and the old one.

Anne Moody is best known for her 1968 autobiography, Coming of Age in Mississippi , which documented her first twenty-two years growing up in the Magnolia State, and her activism as part of the mass movement for civil rights before she fled the South. While the book was an instant success, assigned for decades in schools, colleges, and universities, we know little about Moody's life thereafter. This essay tackles some of that history, and delves into the ethics of finding someone who did not want to be found and left nothing for researchers—yet a few legally obtained boxes containing sensitive personal information that highlighted trauma and mental illness became available for a couple of years in a university archive. The essay discusses some of the ethical issues historians must navigate as they follow research leads, and implicitly underscores the importance of personal and professional integrity in the method and product historians utilize and create.
