Archaeological bodies and their afflictions have multiplied in recent years, along with the specialists who study them. The result is a cascade of data, much of it difficult to reconcile. I argue that variable enactments of disease, rather than reflecting an epistemological disconnect or difference in scale, engender ontological gaps. To pursue these malleable matters, I trace the proliferation of "cancer" from the Spring Street Presbyterian Church burial vaults (1820–1850) in Manhattan. To explore the struggles involved in making many things one, I consider emergent multiplicities of this "disease" within specialists' laboratories, archival records, and the writing process. Rather than force these different cancers to cohere, or make one "win" based on disciplinary domain (science/humanities) or hierarchy of substance (bone/paper), I rely on Stengers's (2018) ecology of partial connects. What does it mean for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) building to be designed through modernist architecture principles on land acquired through settler colonialism? In 1947, construction began on the United Nations Headquarters (UNHQ) in Manhattan, a name derived from Manna-hata, a site within Lenapehoking, the homeland of Indigenous Lenape peoples violently displaced by waves of Dutch, British, and American settlers starting in the 17th century. This paper analyzes the structural dynamics that is in the literal foundations of the United Nations Headquarters, the post-World War II (WWII) worldmaking project intended to safeguard international order. By marshaling the history of Lenapehoking and analyzing the design principles informing the UNGA building, this paper narrows the claim that the post-WWII worldmaking project was contingent upon settler colonialism. Through a capacious reading of settler colonial theory, architectural history, and International Relations (IR), this paper aims to open up conversations on the ongoing structural and spatial dynamics embedded in the foundations of the UNGA building that are constitutive of the post-WWII international order. The ordinary Voronoi treemap generated based on the Euclidean distance function has the flexibility to slightly adjust the layout when visualizing time-varying hierarchical data for better visual quality, preserving neighborhood relationships, and preserving a stable layout. However, its layout formed by segments with arbitrary orientations has poor shape stability between successive layouts at different time indexes, which is not conducive for the users to understand the plot and track the same node. In this paper, we propose novel Voronoi treemaps in Manhattan distance and Chebyshev distance respectively, such that the segments in the new layouts only have four orientations (horizontal, vertical, and ±45° to the x -axis). The new layouts can not only heritage the abilities of ordinary Voronoi treemap, but preserve good shape stability. To achieve this, we first focus on the weighted bisector between two sites in Manhattan distance and design a bisector generation method for different weight values of two sites, as the bisector is the foundation to form a diagram. Then a divide-and-conquer method is utilized to form the bisectors into a Voronoi diagram, and a Voronoi treemap layout can be finally obtained by using Lloyd's method to iteratively adjust the diagram. Moreover, we prove that the treemap algorithm in Manhattan distance can be adjusted to also generate the Voronoi treemap in Chebyshev distance via linear transformation, avoiding designing additional algorithm. The computational properties of the proposed methods are first evaluated to check whether the layouts can be generated fast and accurately. Then the perceptual properties are evaluated quantitatively and qualitatively based on quality metrics and user studies, respectively. The results demonstrate that the proposed Voronoi treemaps preserve similar layout stability, but better visual quality and shape stability than the ordinary Voronoi treemap. Luxville, a neighborhood in lower Manhattan in New York City, is mostly white, native, and wealthy. But when taking the workforce into account it is far more diverse, with immigrants filling most of the personal service jobs. Conventional assumption suggests that residents and immigrant service workers in Luxville would have little interpersonal contact, never mind sense of community, with one another. However, context-specific factors have aided the cultivation of a definition of community there that is unexpectedly inclusive of local immigrant workers, giving both immigrants and residents a sense of belonging. This paper, which is based on extensive ethnographic research, explores factors that create this inclusive community. The degree to which immigrants are incorporated in the neighborhood, however, is minimal, as they occupy a stratified and marginalized position. Immigrants’ belonging, therefore, is largely symbolic. This paper examines three related questions: First, can psychiatrists' judgments be successfully predicted by multiple regression techniques? Second, assuming that they can, are such ratings a valid measure of mental health for the same sample at a later point in time? Third, what is the relation between mental health ratings made in 1954 and such subsequently reported behavioral outcomes as nervous break-down, mental hospitalization, or seeking professional help for emotional problems? The evidence presented warrants two conclusions. (1) The computer-derived mental health ratings are an adequate substitute for the original ratings. The regression equation accounts for 69 percent of the variance in those ratings; and the computer-derived ratings behave in the same way as the psychiatrists' ratings in relation to other variables. (2) However, neither the psychiatrists' ratings nor the computer-derived ratings are very accurate in predicting subsequent self-reported behavior indicative of mental impairment. We document the falling socioeconomic status of American households without private vehicles and the continuing financial burden that cars present for low-income households that own them. We tie both these trends to the auto-orientation of America's built environment, which forces people to either spend heavily on cars or risk being locked out of the economy. We first show that vehicle access remains difficult for low-income households and vehicle operating costs remain high and volatile. Using data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, Survey of Consumer Finances, and Census Public Use Microdata, we then show that in the last fifty years households without vehicles have lost income, both in absolute terms and relative to households with vehicles. We link these trends to the built environment by examining the fortunes of carless households in New York City, and particularly in Manhattan. Most of New York's built environment did not change to accommodate cars, and in New York the fortunes of the carless did not fall. Our results suggest that planners should see vehicles, in most of the United States, as essential infrastructure, and work to close gaps in vehicle access. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although the literature on accelerators, an important and newer model of entrepreneurial support, considers their performance and the definition of the form, little is known about how accelerators populate in a single ecosystem over time. We find accelerators are established by different types of entities such as non-profit organizations, local governments, universities, and even foreign government agencies with different goals. Based on a novel dataset of all 107 accelerator programs that ever operated in New York City, we propose a new way of categorizing accelerators by their founding attributes. We confirm that the emergence of accelerators in New York City started with the entry of non-profit accelerators for the purpose of local economic development. For-profit actors followed. Accelerators began from the periphery of the city's geographic boundaries, but over time became concentrated in Manhattan. We also observe a shift toward sector specialization. Our contributions are to examine the development of one entrepreneurial support organization over time in one ecosystem, present a method to categorize accelerators based on their sub-niches, and to provide evidence of a catalyzing role of local government in fostering ecosystem emergence. This paper examines the cocaine-violence relationship among samples of male and female street drug users using volume of cocaine use as the primary independent variable. Data derive from two ethnographic studies undertaken on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Subjects were studied as both perpetrators and victims of violence. The research was guided by a tripartite conceptual model of the general relationship between drugs and violence. A number of significant differences between males and females are identified and discussed. These findings, together with those of a previous analysis of the relationship between frequency of cocaine use and violence, provide evidence of the complexity of the drugs-violence relationship in general, and cocaine-violence relationships specifically. The symbolic power of grass, trees, flowers, stones, water, and other everyday objects to evoke morethan-human experiences is a cornerstone of memorial practice. As survivors of traumatic events, nonhuman elements have long been preserved in, even added to, memorial landscapes for their representational capacities to "say what cannot be said." Beyond their mobilization as passive symbols, the plants themselves also exert a "creative presence" that equally shapes memorial sites, wherein ecologies of memory are negotiated and coconstituted through human and nonhuman lives. In foregrounding ecologies of "9/11" memory and memorialization, this essay draws on more-than-human approaches that emphasize how both human and nonhuman matter and memory emerge from and transform each other in and around lower Manhattan. At the World Trade Center, both human and nonhuman experiences of violence and violation are implicated in the "ecologies of memory" preserved and curated at the site. Focusing on ecologies of 9/11 commemoration, we argue that spatially fixed narratives of trauma obfuscate the environmentally diffuse human victims of the September 11th terror attacks, as well as how nonhuman actors coconstitute, contradict, and transform these memorial spaces. We argue that these memorial spaces employ the affective power of nonhuman actors to reproduce exclusionary narratives of cultural trauma, while obscuring very real environmentally diffuse human victims and ongoing harms, domestically and abroad. The role that parks played in Manhattan changed dramatically during the antebellum period. Originally dismissed as unnecessary on an island embraced by rivers, parks became a tool for real estate development and gentrification in the 1830s. By the 1850s, politicians, journalists, and landscape architects believed Central Park could be a social salve for a city with rising crime rates, increasingly visible poverty, and deepening class divisions. While many factors (public health, the psychological need for parks, and property values) would remain the same, the changing social conversation showed how ideas of public space were transforming, in rhetoric if not reality. A sequel to Shapin’s earlier work, The Scientific Life: A Moral History of a Late Modern Vocation again solves the problem of induction by observing that researchers are decent. Shapin dismisses most of the literature on both the philosophy of science and (more so) on the sociology of science as ideologically biased and as irrelevant. The article focuses the emotional effects of consumer capitalism in the borough of Manhattan in New York City and the economic and emotional impact of the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. The author discusses a 2008 study of the pleasure associated with expensive wine, or wine that people assumed was expensive through the brain scans of undergraduate students.
