Opencast coal mining produces trash of soil and rock containing various minerals, that are usually dumped nearby the abandoned sites which causes severe environmental concern including the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) through oxidation pyrite minerals. The current study entailed assessing the potential production of AMD from an opencast coal mining region in Northeast part of India. In order to have a comprehensive overview of the AMD problem in Makum coalfield, the physico-chemical, geochemical, and petrological characteristics of the coal and overburden (OB) samples collected from the Makum coalfield (Northeast India) were thoroughly investigated. The maceral compositions reveal that coal features all three groups of macerals (liptinite, vitrinite, and inertinite), with a high concentration of liptinite indicating the coal of perhydrous, thereby rendering it more reactive. Pyrite (FeS2) oxidation kinetics were studied by conducting the aqueous leaching experiments of coal and (OB) samples to interpret the chemical weathering under controlled laboratory conditions of various temperature and time periods, and to replicate the actual mine site leaching. Inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was operated to detect the disposal of some precarious elements from coal and OB samples to the leachates during our controlled leaching experiment. The Rare earth element (REE) enrichment in the samples shows the anthropogenic incorporation of the REE in the coal and OB. These experiments reveal the change in conductivity, acid producing tendency, total dissolved solid(TDS), total Iron(Fe) and dissolved Sulfate(SO42−) ions on progress of the leaching experiments. Moreover, the discharge of FeS2 via atmospheric oxidation in laboratory condition undergoes a significant growth with the rise of temperature of the reaction systems in the environment and follows pseudo first order kinetics. A bio-remediative strategies is also reported in this paper to mitigate AMD water by employing size-segregated powdered limestone and water hyacinth plant in an indigenously developed site-specific prototype station. Coal is the major source of power in India and world over. Coal mining is an essential industry which has a major role in the economic development of the country. Most major mining activities contribute directly or indirectly to air pollution. Coal dust is a major air pollutant which affects the personal working in the mines and also people residing in villages near the mines. Air pollution due to coal particulates can affect human health and cause damages to the environment. Hence effective pollution control mechanisms are needed to keep the pollution levels within permissible levels. The easiest and most common method employed for dust suppression worldwide is sprinkling of water. In majority of mines, water sprinklers are operated manually and can lead to wastage of water due to over sprinkling. It can also prove to be ineffective in dust suppression if sprinkling is not done properly. The paper proposes a system which can be deployed to automate the dust suppressions sprinklers. The system will monitor the concentration of PM10 and PM2.5 in the air and initiate sprinkling operation when the particulate matter content exceeds preconfigured limits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The concentration of silica in occupational conditions is well defined and estimated around the world. Many countries in the world have developed air standards for occupational conditions based on the percent silica in ambient air. This is due to the pulmonary effect caused by silica yielding diseases like silicosis and pneumoconiosis. In India, occupational exposure to silica dust is regulated by Directorate General of Mine Safety (Tech.) (S&T) Circular No. 1 of 2004 Under Reg. 123 of Coal Mines Regulations, 1957 for any metal/non-metal mining operations estimated gravimetrically. As no silica standards are prescribed in India for non-occupational conditions, venturing into such analysis was well envisaged and perceived. Methodology: Air sampling was done at identified locations through high-volume samplers for 24 h, twice a week in pre-monsoon season (March to June) and the Whatman filter paper was sonicated at sufficient speed to isolate dust particles for energy dispersive X-ray. Results: The percentage of silica in "PM10" was found lowest in mining sites (15%), and highest in transportation sites (35%) and mid-value for mixed sites (24%). Thus, risk level gets magnified due to addition of finer dust generated in transportation and mixed sites than mining due to diesel driven vehicles. Burning of any fossil fuel generates high percentage of finer dust (< 2.5 µm). Conclusions: There should be proper prescribed standard for silica for non-occupational conditions. Air is the basis for the existence of life on Earth; but in the present age of modernization the degrading quality of air year by year, due to the growth of Industrialization, urbanization, automobiles, coal-fired thermal power plants, and various other factories is the matter of real concern. To predict the future growth of air pollutants numerous prediction models have been developed by researchers. Time-series ARIMA model although quite useful for forecasting but fails to handle non-stationary problems. Among all the existing forecasting models, wavelets along with the Machine learning models have proved to be very successful and have been widely used in various fields like mathematical modeling, signal recognition, image recognition, classification, function approximation, data processing, filtering, clustering, compression, robotics, and decision making. It is also used in the field of mathematical forecasting for developing efficient prediction models. This paper aims to develop a wavelet-ANFIS conjugation model and a wavelet-ARIMA coupled model along with the time-series ARIMA model for the prediction of black carbon concentration over the Raniganj, Jharia, and Bokaro coal mines of India, by considering a long term data obtained by NASA (http://nasa.gov/) and compare the results obtained by these models for determining the best prediction model. The validity of the results is tested with the help of error measures like RMSE, MSE, MAPE, MAE, and relative error. Coal mining and its unfavourable consequences have generated global attention. It has further stimulated the paradoxical debate of development and desolation in the contemporary scenario. Since the coal resources are profusely available in India and it is comparatively less expensive, the country has been largely relying on it for its essential and non-essential consumption needs. Coal resources indirectly fulfil many of the modern requirements and comforts. Consequently, mining of minerals in general and coal in particular has become the prime focus. It helps to generate revenue, augment industrialisation and promote employment opportunities in India. Despite these progressive features, the opencast coal mining activities impose serious threats to the livelihood of the local communities. Based on critical review of the relevant literature, the article seeks to exhibit the mineral reserves and coal mining activities at global, national and regional context. The paper has incorporated a special focus on Odisha—a resource-rich state located in eastern part of India. Particularly, the two existing major coalfields—Talcher and Ib valley, situated in western part of the state—have been emphasised. The manifold adverse externalities of the coal mining practices on the livelihood pattern among the affected people have been assessed. For millennium, mining sector is a source not only of mineral extraction for industrialization, economic expansion, and urban sprawling, but also of socio-environmental concern. It, therefore, has been the central attention of the business and public policy sustainable development scheme for several years. Thus, gradually, mining industries are getting involved with the concerns such as carbon emissions mitigation and carbon accounting to govern a rhetorical shift towards "sustainable mining". However, there is scarce knowledge about how the emergence of a "green and self-sustaining" forestry reclamation strategy coupled with potential carbon sequestration capacity in degraded mining areas will be an impeccable option for achieving sustainable development goal-13 (SDG-13: climate action) and ecosystem services during United Nation decade of ecosystem restoration. This paper reviews the extent to which reforestation and sustainable land management practices that employed to enhance ecosystem carbon pool and atmospheric CO2 sequestration capacity to offset CO2 emission and SOC (soil organic carbon) losses, as consequences of coal mining, to partially mitigate global climate crisis. Moreover, future research is required on mining innovation concepts and its challenges for designing an SDG impact framework, so that it not only synergies amongst SDGs, but also trade-offs between each individual "politically legitimized post-2015 development agenda" (i.e. UNSDGs) could be depicted in a systematic way. In a developing country like India, it is also an utmost need to assess the environmental impact and economic performance of such technological innovation and its possible synergistic effect. Anthropogenic activities such as gold and coal mining, oil and gas production, filling of artificial water reservoirs, harnessing of geothermal energy, etc., have induced/triggered earthquakes. Koyna dam, located in the Deccan volcanic province of India, was impounded in 1962, and soon after tremors were reported from the vicinity of Koyna dam. The largest triggered earthquake of magnitude (M) 6.3 occurred on 10 December 1967. The triggered earthquakes have continued until now and the region has experienced 22 events of an M~5, over 200 events of an M~4 and several thousand smaller events. The reservoir-triggered seismicity has continued until 2021, which is unique. Some of the early investigations, leading to drilling of a 3 km deep pilot borehole at Koyna for near-field studies of earthquakes, and a few recent results are summarised in this paper. Research highlights: Koyna, located near the west coast of India, in the Deccan volcanic province is one of the most prominent sites of artificial water reservoir-triggered seismicity (RTS). Triggered earthquakes started soon after the impoundment of Shivaji Sagar lake created by Koyna dam in 1962 and have continued until now. Unlike other RTS sites where triggered earthquakes did not continue for long, Koyna is still active, and it is estimated that RTS may continue for another one to two decades. Detailed field work and analyses of earthquake data demonstrated that Koyna is a very suitable site for near-field studies of earthquakes: an observation that is much needed to validate earthquake genesis models. International Continental Drilling Programme sponsored workshops and participation of experts from all over the world helped in deciding to dig a 3 km deep pilot borehole. The borehole was completed in June 2017. Recent research studies further demonstrated that the Koyna region is under critical stress. The author presents a number of comments on the article "Volatile Displacement of Meghalaya Coals: A Pointer to Explore Low Sulphur Coals," which was published in the April 2007 issue. He argues that the paper is full of common mistakes, wrong computations, and long-drawn conclusions. In methodology, he notes that the author of the said paper indicates about drawing of regression curves which is wrong.

A fully mechanised mining method using continuous miner (CM) for pillar extraction in single-pass is introduced in the year 2010 at Pinoura Mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited, Bilaspur in India. Overall mining cycle time is reduced by single-pass pillar extraction as it does not require drivage of split galleries in pillars and support installation for such galleries. Further, inherent technical abilities of the deployed CM for faster cutting and quad-bolter for supporting, helped in faster recovery of pillars without creating any strata control issues. Rate of face advance varied between 5–15m/day with an average of 8m/day. Field observations found that CM based single-pass extraction is capable in dealing with the strata control issues during depillaring under weak and laminated (incompetent in nature) roof layers having rock mass rating value around 42. A total of eleven panels, have been depillared under the weak and laminated geology, ranging depth of cover from 59 to 149m in different panels of the mine. During field investigations in these panels, a maximum of 2.89MPa induced vertical stress is recorded and influence of caved roof over underground mining structures is observed up to 15m in the out-bye from the goaf edge. This paper deals with estimation of snook size and limiting roof movement value based on numerical simulation and field studies during the single-pass extraction below the incompetent geological formations. Indian coal mining industry is in transition phase with the growing demand of coal and is likely to escalate further with the need of ultra-mega power projects as well as announcement of smart cities projects. Although, there exist sufficient coal reserves in India, continuous acquisition and possession of coal bearing land is required to minimize the existing gap prevailing between coal demand and supply.The solution of the problem lies not only in modification of laws and policies of industry, but also in modification of mining engineering practices towards sustainable development. This paper critically examines the cause of the problem in the light of Indian laws and practices of the industry. In this paper a method of exact reclamation of post-mining land has been designed as a solution to make easier land acquisition by way of proposing a system of returning back the exact reclaimed land to its owners under corporate social responsibility activity of the industry. The proposed conceptual model of interlinking corporate social responsibility with land exchange will encourage sustainable development practice by mining engineers, and may turn around the public image of the industry. Sub-surface coal mine fires burn valuable resources and give rise to great threat in the local environs and people's health. Jharia coal field is one of utmost fire affected coal fields in India. This paper deals with the study of sub-surface coal fire using self-potential (SP) method, a cost-effective and non-invasive passive geophysical technique. SP method in coal fire mapping works based on redox potential generated by oxidation of coal and also on Thomson potential due to temperature gradient. Initially, SP anomaly map generated using electrode drift corrected field data. The SP anomalies in the present study area vary from ∼95 to ∼ −40mV. SP anomaly map has been continued to a height of 10m from the ground to remove the possible shallow surface noises. The upward continued anomaly map has been enhanced using first vertical derivative. Further, Euler's depth solutions have been estimated to understand possible geometry and source depth of sub-surface coal fires. With growing demand for mineral resources and favourable policy towards the mining sector, developing countries have become investment hubs for mineral extraction, which has changed the socioeconomic and ecological scenarios particularly in rural areas. Extractive industries such as coal mining generate negative externalities that bring irreversible changes in the local ecological conditions, which adversely affect the local economy and threatens the sustainability of local livelihood systems. The objective of this paper is to analyse the effects of coal mining on local traditional livelihood systems in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The study is carried out using household level data collected from four mining villages located in the Ib valley coal field of Odisha. The problem of sustainability of local traditional livelihoods is examined in the light of economic theories of sustainability (e.g. weak and strong sustainability) and sustainable livelihood approach (SLA). The results show that rural households in the mining area experience both positive and negative outcomes from the coal mining activities. The expansion of mines has provided employment to locals directly as well as indirectly, which has helped to increase financial as well as physical capitals. On the other hand, the reduction in the provision of ecosystem services due to adverse effects of coal mining resulted in lower yields in traditional livelihood activities such as forest, agriculture, and animal husbandry. The paper suggests that in order to effectively internalize the externalities arising from coal mining and maintain the sustainability of local livelihood system in Odisha, there is a need to reinvest some part of resource rents in regeneration of natural capital of the region. The mineralogy and geochemical studies of the coal-mine shale collected from the Tirap opencast coal-mine (Makum coalfield, Northeast India) are reported in this paper. Thermo-chemical conversion (pyrolysis) of coal-mine shale has been studied to see its hydrocarbon potential. A combined approach using X-Ray diffraction (LTA-XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrophotometer (EDS), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), thermogravimetry-derivative and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG and DTA) analysis is made to obtain new information on the mineralogical and geochemical studies of a coal-mine shale (CMS) sample. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis is performed to evaluate the quality of the liquid fraction (tar) obtained after pyrolysis at 600°C. The shale sample is dominated by quartz, clay minerals (kaolinite and illite), sulphate bearing phase like gypsum with minor proportion of anatase, probably as artifacts of the plasma-ashing process. GC-MS analysis illustrates the presence of highly oxygenated organic components (M.W. around 94-108) and high molecular weight (M.W. 256) cyclic sulphur (e.g. octathiocane with molecular formula S) compounds along with the complex N-containing organic sulphur compounds (M.W. around 255-486) in the tar produced. The increasing trend of opencast coal mining in India tends to release huge amounts of dust. But there is no well-defined method of estimating dust emission due to different coal mining activities. This paper examines the sources of dust emission due to coal mining activities, and focuses on the quantification of dust emission with the development and use of emission factors. Because of their site-specific nature, emission factors developed for one site may not give the correct results for another site. In the present investigation, prediction equations are utilized for the development of emission factors. For the applications of this concept, one large opencast coal project of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd. (BCCL) was investigated, and the total amount of dust emitted due to different mining activities was calculated by the utilization of emission factor data, which was estimated to be 9368.2 kg/day. This paper also focuses on the significance of this study in the field of environmental protection and likely impacts of such study. The paper concludes that once the amount of dust generation is estimated, the impact on air quality can be assessed appropriately and a proper air-pollution control strategy can be developed. During the pre-nationalisation period due to unscientific mining, large number of old workings exist below important structures at various coal fields in India. Mostly these old workings exist below National Highways and Railway track. These workings are generally at shallow depth. It has been observed that subsidence and pot holing are common in those areas. As a result the safety of vehicles and passenger trains plying over these areas endangered. Since the old workings are more than 60 years old in most of the cases the proper plan and survey documents are not available. So it is extremely difficult to exactly locate the underground mine workings/galleries/voids from the surface such that precautionary measures can be initiated for the safety of roads and railway tracks. Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL) has indicated that there may be some old workings below the national highway (NH-2) near Dalmia colliery of SalanpurArea of ECL. The most sophisticated system, MineVue Radar was used for delineation of abandoned mine workings or mine galleries below NH-2. Two voids of size 1.8 m height at depth of 40 m and another of size 1.35 m height at a depth of 33.5 m were delineated and confirmed using direct core drilling method. After that, Mine management was informed about these voids to take precautionary measures for the safety of NH-2. Thus, this system has played an important role for the safety of important surface structures. This paper deals the application of MineVue radar system for delineation of mine galleries below NH-2. Mine fire is a major problem for the Indian coal mining industry and exists since beginning of the mining. A huge amount of the prime coking coal reserves of different coalfields are blocked due to existence of fire and thus cannot be extracted without extinguishing it. Many approaches have been attempted in this direction to minimize this socio-technological problem. Use of chemical retardants to inhibit smouldering combustion phenomenon is an important method, which can be adopted to prevent or delay its occurrences. In this situation, it may sometimes be necessary to use fire retardants for reducing the intensity of fire so that the coal production will not be hampered. This paper presents the impact of chemical additives on coal oxidation process, studied from the mechanistic perspective aiming to search effective retardant materials to prevent and control coal self-heating phenomenon. A numbers of chemicals and combinations along with coal, which are moderately prone to smouldering combustion, were studied to determine its efficacy to prevent and combat it. In the process CPT, IPT and DSC study of coal samples and chemicals were observed. Based on the results, suitable retardants were selected and mixed with coal samples. The mixtures were further analysed for above properties. Finally, the best suitable combination of inhibitors were determined and applied in the field, which gave desired results. Trace element pollution of soils surrounding coal-mining areas affects the health of local communities. The increasing coal-mining and associated activities in the Raniganj basin (east India) have led to increased soil concentration of certain trace elements. To quantify the elevated trace element (TE) concentrations in the soil surrounding coal-mining areas, 83 surface soil, coal, and shale samples were collected from open-cast mining areas of the eastern Raniganj basin. The soils present are sandy silt, silty sand, and silty in nature, but almost no clay. They are acidic (pH = 4.3) to slightly alkaline (pH = 7.9) with a mean electrical conductivity (EC) of 340.45 µS/cm and a mean total organic carbon (TOC) of 1.80%. The northern and western parts of the study area were found to be highly polluted by certain metallic trace elements. The relevant environmental indices, geoaccumulation index (Igeo), contamination factors (CF), enrichment factors (EF), and pollution load index (PLI) were calculated and assessed. Analysis revealed that Cr was highly enriched in these soil samples, followed by Pb, Co, Cu, Cd, Fe, Ni, Mn, Zn, As, and Al. Geostatistical analyses (correlation coefficients and principal component analysis) indicated that the occurrence of some trace elements (Al, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) is most likely linked to the various coal-mining operations in the study area. However, the anomalous Cr and Pb distributions are likely influenced by other anthropogenic, mainly industrial, inputs besides coal mining. These results justify the adoption of rigorous soil monitoring programs in the vicinity of coal-mining areas, to identify pollution hotspots and to develop strategies to reduce or mitigate such environmentally damaging pollution. Longwall Top Coal Caving (LTCC), a relatively newer technology in India, is an underground mining method developed for thick seam extraction. Various factors and systematic approaches are to be considered and properly evaluated in order to qualify and gain confidence in the assessment of introducing LTCC mining method. The proposed paper presents the various processes involved in designing a LTCC technology in one of the mine sites at Singareni Coal Company Limited (SCCL), India. The project undertook a comprehensive analysis of geological and geophysical data of the mine site and developed detailed geotechnical frameworks for the assessment of LTCC technology. Pillar design is of paramount importance to any underground mine design. Oversized pillars may lead to loss of coal while undersized pillars may lead to instability. While underground pillars are mostly square and rectangular, highwall mining pillars are long and narrow, as they are formed after driving parallel entries in the seam from the highwall. These pillars are termed as web pillars. The overall stability of highwall depends upon these pillars as no other supports are provided in the entries. Web pillar differs from usual coal pillars in respect of w/h ratio being <3.0, with an exceptionally longer length compared to its width, to the tune of 50-500 m. Several empirical coal pillar strength equations developed for rectangular pillars are still being used with some modifications to adapt to web pillars. Review and analysis of these empirical approaches for determining web pillar strength along with a numerical approach for web pillar design are discussed in this paper. Subsidence is a gradual or sudden depression of the ground on the surface due to extraction of minerals from underground. It occurs in two forms, namely, trough and pot-hole subsidence. Trough subsidence is a depression covering a large surface area, whereas pot-hole subsidence is a localized phenomenon which occurs due to sudden collapse of overburden into the underground voids. Pot hole is extremely hazardous as it does not give any prior indication before its occurrence. Several pot-holes have occurred in the recent past in the coal mines of South Eastern Coalfield Limited and therefore the study assumes great importance. This paper presents the mechanism, behaviour and critical influencing parameters concerning pot-holes. The present paper mainly with deals the prediction of safe explosive charge used per delay (Q) using support vector machine (SVM) incorporating peak particle velocity (PPV) and distance between blast face to monitoring point (D). 150 blast vibration data sets were monitored at different vulnerable and strategic locations in and around a major coal producing opencast coal mines in India. 120 blast vibrations records were used for the training of the SVM model vis-à-vis to determine site constants of various conventional vibration predictors. Rest 30 new randomly selected data sets were used to compare the SVM prediction results with widely used conventional predictors. Results were compared based on coefficient of correlation (R) between measured and predicted values of safe charge of explosive used per delay (Q). It was found that coefficient of correlation between measured and predicted Q by SVM was 0.997, whereas it was ranging from 0.063 to 0.872 by different conventional predictor equations. Dust from haul and transport roads are the major source of air pollution in opencast coal mining areas. Dust generated during mining operations pollutes air which causes different health problems. Various available techniques are implemented in the field to minimize and control dust in mining areas. However, they are not very effective because dust deposited on road surfaces are not removed by these techniques. For effective control of dust in opencast mining areas, it has to be regularly collected from road surfaces and may be converted into solid form, and subsequently can be used as a domestic fuel considering its physicochemical properties. The present paper describes a comparative study of qualitative and quantitative aspects of road dust samples of four coalfields of India. The pH of the dust was found to be in the range of 5.1-7.7. Moisture, ash, volatile matter, fixed carbon, water-holding capacity, bulk density, and specific gravity of dust samples were found to be in the range of 0.5-3.0%, 45-76%, 12.6-20.0%, 10.2-45.3%, 21.17-31.71%, 1.15-1.70, and 1.73-2.30 g cm, respectively. Observing the overall generation and characteristics of coal dust, it is suggested that coal dust from haul and transport roads of mining areas can be effectively collected and used as domestic fuel. Maslow's hierarchy-of-needs theory has been used to predict development of Quality of Life (QOL) in countries over time. In this paper an attempt has been taken to derive a methodological validation of quality of life questionnaire which have been prepared for the study area. The objective of the study is to standardize a questionnaire tool to assess the QoL of residents in a problem area in India. From a pre tested 16 parameter questionnaire tool factorial validity were established to extract three domains and were mapped in accordance to Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs theory. Out of these 16 parameters 13 were found relevant. Then a new tool was conceptualized with 13 pre selected parameters and other parameters were pooled from existing tool and reviews to form a 36 parameter tool. Factor analysis was done to extract the domains. Reliability of the tool was also tested to find the relation between the domains of QoL. Then the quality of life of the study area was interpreted to find the distribution of respondents among the categories of QoL. 70% of respondents reported to have average quality of life. Abstract  Shallow land cover over old underground workings at Kamptee Colliery has led to the development of ground collapse, with three crown hole subsidences recorded in a 10 year period. As the land above the workings has been developed, it was considered that for safety purposes areas with less than 15 m of competent rock should be established. The paper discusses the Multi-electrode Resistivity Imaging (RI) and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) undertaken over an area of 800 m � 200 m, which indicated that where a competent cover was present it was very thin. The paper attempts to examine the effects of the internal consistency of structural dimensions and contingency factors on the functioning of two open-cast coal mines in the Indian public sector - one operating with the matrix structure while the other follows the functional structure. The findings supported the two contentions of organisational theory: (a) internal consistency of the structural dimensions is strongly related to effective functioning of the organisational structure; (b) structural ‘fit’ with the contingency factors, e.g., size, geographical area, is positively related to organisational performance. The study further highlights the significance of consistency between structure, systems and culture. Mining operations can have a significant impact on the stability of the surrounding area. One example is the Medapalli open pit coal mine in southern India. The mine is a large excavation working at a depth of 165 m that can reach up to 200 m. The western side highwall has locked-up coal reserves in the mine, but concerns about the geologically disturbed regions have resulted in complications and significant challenges. Surface tension cracks around the excavation became visible in 2018, prompting intensive monitoring, protective measures, and numerous geotechnical analyses. The area, however, has a rich tectonic history, with faults interacting with soil movements. Proper geotechnical investigations were used in this work to analyse the stability of the highwall due to faults' effects on the area's reaction due to mining operations. The findings in the study highlighted the significance of flaws in the ground movement due to improper design of the highwall fault interaction area. The presence of the fault increases the likelihood of tensile cracks and subsidence at the highwall's surface level, significantly worsening the mining activities in the area. The analysis reveals that complex geological features, such as the presence of faults roughly parallel to the highwall slope profile, can exacerbate the mining operations in the surrounding environment. The recommended slope design with protective measures towards the west side disturbed highwall area helps safely excavate the western side highwall locked-up coal reserves in the Medapalli open pit mine. Underground coal mine environment is hazardous and accident prone. The present work proposes an internet of things (IoT) based smart under- ground mine monitoring system at the excavation site. The developed system establishes a communication link to enable data transmission between underground smart devices and above the ground monitoring station. The smart device of the system includes sensors and sx1276 long range (LoRa) transceiver module. LoRa technology ensures through-the-Earth (TTE) wireless communication using 868 MHz frequency. The developed system monitors the concentration of methane (CH4) gas, carbon mono oxide (CO) gas, and the ambient condition of the mine environment. The sensor data collected is analyzed by the decision-making algorithm which has also been proposed in the work. The algorithm runs at the application server. The algorithm has been developed based on the mine environment safety index (MESI) designed by the authors. The data is available at the application server and can be monitored by the mine authorities. The developed system gives early warning of hazardous levels of gas concentration or uncomfortable values of temperature and humidity and can thus ensure a safe working environment. The system has been tested in an operational coal mine at Pandaveswar, Eastern Coalfield Limited, India. The testing has demonstrated the efficacy of the developed system and has proven that the developed system will be useful to initiate faster rescue operations in case of fatal accidents, if any. Streams are pristine natural life-thriving water sources for people living in the mountainous proximity of NE India, where water scarcity is a common occurrence in most villages and towns. In the last few decades, factors like coal mining had drastically reduced the usability of stream water in the region; as such, an attempt has been made to assess the spatiotemporal variation of stream water chemistry affected by acid mine drainage (AMD) at Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya. The water variables were subjected to a multivariate statistical technique of principal component analysis (PCA) to understand their condition at each sampling point while comprehensive pollution index (CPI) and water quality index (WQI) was incorporated to assess the quality status. Maximum WQI was recorded in S4 (541.14) during summer, while minimum value was estimated in winter at S1 (14.65). Throughout the seasons, the WQI revealed "Good" quality in S1 (unimpacted stream), while the impacted streams (S2, S3, and S4) exhibited a "Very poor" to "Water unsuitable for drinking" status. Similarly, in S1, the CPI showed a ranged value of 0.20 to 0.37, presenting a water quality status of "Clean to Sub-Clean," whereas, CPI of the impacted streams indicated "Severely polluted" status. In addition, PCA bi-plot presented higher affinity of free CO2, Pb, SO42−, EC, Fe, and Zn in AMD-impacted streams than in unimpacted streams. The result demonstrates the environmental issues induced by coal mine waste and in particular, stream water being severely affected by AMD in mining areas of Jaintia Hills. Thus, measures to stabilized the mine repercussions and cumulative effects on the water bodies need to be formulated by the government, as stream water will remain the primary water source for the tribal communities in this region. Coal is dominant energy source of world at large and India in particular for several decades and expected to being continued for foreseeable future. However, fire in this fossils fuel is still a global catastrophe for the major coal-producing countries. There are several direct and cascading distress of coal mine fire has been encountered by environment, economy, safety and society. Without knowledge of actual status and extent of coal mine fire, any scope for its better managements may be futile. In India, the coal mine fire of well-known Jharia coalfield (JCF) has been continued since last ten decades and still spreading towards newer areas. The aim of this paper is to highlight the chronological net lateral spatial changes in coal mine fire areas of JCF using Landsat satellite thermal imageries. The mapping of coal mine fire area of JCF during 1988-2013 has been carried out with consecutive 5-year intervals. The lateral changes in surface and subsurface fire areas along with propagation towards new area have been studied. The study also included to evaluate changes of status and extent fire during this time span and effect of its management efforts. The utilization of innovative technology by the coal mine industry requires proper guidance of sub-surface information so that it can provide uninterrupted exploration with less time and minimum cost. Sufficient knowledge about the coal beds that is variation of thickness, depth, and associated structures will facilitate the mine engineer to run machinery systematically. Conventional geological reports based on borehole data may not sufficient to adopt state-of-the-art drilling technology. To address these issues, high-resolution seismic survey (HRSS) was conducted to delineate the thickness of coal seams and mapping of structural features which are associated with coal seams. An effort was made to demonstrate the high-resolution seismic reflection study for picking of minor faults locations and thickness of coal seams in the central part of the Sohagpur, Gondwana basin that occurs at the junction of the Mahanadi and Son-Narmada rift systems in central India. The study reveals thick Barakar Formation and coal seams at a depth range of 300 to 550 meters. The thickness of coal seams and the location of minor faults were interpreted with the help of attribute analysis from the seismic sections. This study gives insight into the spatiotemporal variability of respirable PM concentrations around typically highly mechanized opencast coal mines in India and its influence on ambient air quality, which at present is scant in the literature. The results suggest that at a distance of 500 m from the pit boundary, the respirable PM concentrations were found higher than the background concentration (1.52, 1.80 and 1.89 times for PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 at Mine 1 and 1.4, 1.35 and 1.35 times for PM10, PM2.5 and PM1 at Mine 2) which suggests that residents up to and beyond 500 m from the mine are exposed to the PM emitted from mining activities. For PM2.5 and PM1 concentrations, RH was the most important determinant (PM2.5: 24.8%; PM1: 30.1%). Pit boundary PM concentration was the weakest determinant (7%) for the PM2.5 concentration in mine surroundings, and wind speed was found as the weakest determinant (6.6%) for PM1 concentration. Conversely, distance (20.8%) was the important determinant of PM10 concentrations. All the four predictors (RH, wind speed, distance and Pit boundary PM concentration) could explain 46–54% variability in the PM concentrations. Inclusion of pit boundary PM concentration as a predictor increased the prediction capability of the models (all the developed models have R2 > 0.40 at significance level p < 0.05). Purpose: Coal mine overburden is a term typically used to refer to the waste rocks and the soil materials generated from the open cast method of coal extraction. Previous investigations have found that recycled aggregates from coal overburden are suitable as subballast material in railway trackbed. But no study has been reported yet that analyzes the environmental consequences of this option using the life cycle assessment (LCA) technique. To ensure sustainability, it is vital to examine the environmental consequences of alternatives which is performed in this study. Method: The present study compares the environmental impacts of processed aggregates from coal mine overburden with that of natural subballast material. The study also investigates the environmental sustainability of using geocell-reinforced overburden aggregates (GOBA) in the subballast layer. The database used for this LCA study is Ecoinvent 3 database and the impact assessment method adopted is IMPACT 2002 + method. The effects on 15 midpoint indicators and four endpoint indicators along with the contribution of each of the processes involved in the production toward the categories are presented in this study. Results: According to the findings, when compared to natural aggregates, processed aggregates from overburden lower the potential for climate change by 35% and the demand for non-renewable energy by 33%. Furthermore, the production of geocell-reinforced OB aggregates reduces the potential for climate change by 16%. Conclusions: Based on the IMPACT 2002 + method used in this study, the use of OB aggregates in the track bed's subballast layer significantly lowers the negative effects on human health, climate change, ecosystem quality, and resources and reduces the impacts on all midpoint category indicators. The present study is aimed to assess the spatial variation of groundwater quality based on the influencing hydrogeological parameters in the surrounding mining areas of India's one of the largest coal fields, the Korba coal field, Chhattisgarh, Central India. To achieve this goal, a knowledge-driven approach with the aid of a Machine Learning (ML) decision tree-based model, i.e., Classification and Regression Tree (CART) model, was developed to predict possible factors contributing to the degradation of groundwater quality in the selected regions. A total of five influencing factors were selected viz., water table depth (WTD), groundwater drawdown (DR), slope (S), elevation (E), and distance to mines (DTM), which were considered as the important input variables. Groundwater Quality Index (GWQI) values of 216 locations within a buffer zone of 20 km centered from the coal mining area were assigned as the target variables in the CART model. The influences of these factors on groundwater quality were assessed using a recursive partitioning combined with a pruned algorithm. Results showed that the significant factors followed decreasing trend of S (34%) > DTM (23%) > WTD (16%) > DR (15%) > E (12%). The model predicted relatively higher GWQI values attributed to the available lower ground slope in the study area. Similarly, wells situated within a 3 km radius of the buffer zone had low groundwater quality apparently due to the influence of mines. Higher GWQI values were observed in the wells having low WTD value (˂7.9 m) and higher DR in the study area. The results suggested that the anthropogenic activity is one of the major sources of groundwater contamination, whereas the impact of mines was only observed within a radius of 3 km from the center of the mining areas. Anthropogenic seismicity has been observed due to filling of artificial water reservoirs, geothermal and natural oil/gas production, and gold/coal mining under favorable geological conditions. Among these, artificial water reservoir triggered seismicity (RTS) is most prominent, with over 200 sites globally where RTS has been observed, including 5 sites where earthquakes exceeding M 6 magnitude occurred. Koyna, located near the west coast of India in stable Deccan Volcanic Province is the most prominent site where the largest RTS event of M 6.3 occurred in 1967, and the RTS has continued till now, for near field study of earthquakes. Here we present a summary of (a) global RTS, (b) scientific work carried in the Koyna region, (c) characterizing RTS, and (d) establishing a 3 km deep Pilot Borehole laboratory as a precursor to setting up of a ∼ 7 km deep bore hole laboratory. The work being carried out is providing necessary inputs for the design of the ∼ 7 km deep borehole laboratory for the near field studies of RTS and shed light on the geneses of earthquakes in general and RTS. Methane content in a coal seam is a necessary parameter for evaluating coal bed gas, and it poses an environmental risk to underground coal mining activities. Keeping in pace with comprehensive studies of coal bed gas, 12 coal samples were selected from the Sitarampur block of Raniganj Coalfield for analysis. The Petrographic examination illustrated that significant values of reactive macerals present in samples demonstrate that organic matter is dominated by the prominent source of aromatic hydrocarbons with a minor proportion of aliphatic hydrocarbon, which falls in the region of (Type III) kerogen, confirms the suitability for the potential of hydrocarbon generation. "A" factor (aliphatic/aromatic bands) and "C" factor (carbonyl/carboxyl bands) value concluded that the sample has the lowest aromaticity and the highest hydrocarbon-generating potential, which was also validated by the Van Krevelen diagram. The Van Krevelen diagram plots between the H/C and O/C ratio indicate that coal samples lie in the type III kerogen, and bituminous coal (gas prone zone) is present in the block, which is confirmed by the cross-plot between desorbed and total gas (cc/g). The in situ gas content values are high enough to produce methane from coal beds. Undoubtedly, coal is playing an important role in shaping today's world. But, excessive extraction of coal has created several adverse effects on the local economy as well as on the global economy. In this study, the households' vulnerability to coal mining operations is assessed by taking two indicators, i.e., the livelihood vulnerability index (LVI) and livelihood effect index (LEI) in active coal mining and non-mining villages of Talcher Coalfields region of Angul district of Odisha, India. The mining village has shown more vulnerability than the non-mining village in both indices. In LVI, natural disaster, climate variation, and environmental quality (NDCVEQ) indicator is the dominant factor that greatly impacted the overall vulnerability level of the households followed by water (W), health (H), and finance (FIN). Out of the five capitals of LEI, natural capital and financial capital have been affected more due to coal mining activities in the mining village, than the non-mining village. This reflects that households in the mining village are more susceptible to various environmental related issues, and hence, they need to adopt adequate measures to cope up with the issues created from mining operations. The demand of coal has led to expand the mining activities nationwide, which helps to improve the economic growth of the national capital. At the same time, it is the source of inevitable social and environmental consequences. In the developing countries, especially rural areas are often affected by this complex nature of mining. The local livelihood suffers most by mining-induced displacement and land acquisition. This research article examines the impacts of coal mining on financial, physical, human, natural, and social capitals and how these capitals affect the rural livelihood practices in the Sonepur-Bazari opencast coal mining area in Raniganj coalfield of West Bengal, India. Data for this investigation have primarily obtained from the Sonepur-Bazari area with the help of structured questionnaire. Findings indicate that the rural communities are affected positively as well as negatively by the mining activities. Acquisition of land due to expansion of mining has provided monetary and job compensations to the local land losers that directly and indirectly enhance the local economy, but the job opportunities are very much limited to the landholders. Monetary compensation has helped to increase the physical capital among the communities. On the other hand, natural and social capitals are adversely affected by the mining and associated activities. Coal mining and ancillary activities have the potential to cause water pollution characterized by acid mine drainage, acid mine leachates, extreme pH conditions and heavy metal contaminations. In the present work, 33 water samples in premonsoon and 34 water samples in monsoon were collected from the surface water bodies of Ib Valley coalfield, India for hydrogeochemical analysis. In premonsoon, pH, TSS, Turbidity, DO, BOD, COD, Magnesium, Cadmium, Selenium, Nickel, Aluminum and in monsoon, pH, TSS, Turbidity, DO, BOD, COD, Iron, Cadmium, Selenium, Nickel and Aluminum were nonconforming to the permissible limit set by the Bureau of Indian Standards, World Health Organisation and Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India. The average BOD/COD ratio of less than 0.6 in both seasons indicated Ib valley coalfield water was not fairly biodegradable. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that significant seasonal variation (p < 0.05) was observed in the hydro-chemical parameters viz. TSS, turbidity, redox potential, acidity, total hardness, bicarbonate alkalinity, chloride, sulfate, nitrate, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, cadmium, chromium and magnesium during the entire sampling period. Whereas, no significant seasonal variation (p > 0.05) was observed in pH, EC, TDS, DO, BOD, residual chlorine, COD, oil and grease, fluoride, potassium, zinc, copper, selenium, nickel, aluminum, boron, silica, temperature, salinity, cyanide and phenol. Water Quality Index revealed that 39.39% and 35.29% samples belong to poor water quality category in premonsoon and monsoon, respectively. As per Heavy Metal Pollution Index, Degree of Contamination (Cd) and Heavy metal evaluation index, medium degree of pollution were exhibited by 51.52%, 30.30% and 45.45% samples in premonsoon and 20.59%, 35.29% and 26.47% samples in monsoon. Whereas, 5.88%, 2.94% and 5.88% samples were having high degree of pollution in monsoon and 15.15% samples caused high degree of pollution with respect to Cd in premonsoon. The current study aims to characterize and estimate the particulate matter (PM) exposure level of the population near an opencast coal mine. PM concentrations of different sizes were monitored at 32 locations distributed uniformly in the study area for spatial profiling and at 1 location for analysing the temporal variations and characterization of dust. Health impacts of PM to nearby residents were estimated using the air quality index (AQI) values and were cross-validated using the health survey data. The monitoring results indicated that the 15 min average concentrations of PM10 and PM2.5 were 2.3–2.4 times of the corresponding 24 h National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) in all the monitoring stations. Low wind speed during monitoring campaign that resulted in little PM dispersion is suggested to be the reason for this. AQI levels at five villages surrounding the mine were "moderate to severe" during morning-hours that improved to "satisfactory to moderate" during day-time. Eye irritation and respiratory problems were the two most adverse effects experienced by the residents living nearby to the mine. The health survey data and the corresponding AQI values indicate that respiratory problem is well correlated with the AQI values. The dust contains mainly six major elements in the order of O > C > F > Si > Al > Fe > Ca, accounting for 95% of the weight percentages of the 20 elements for which the characterization was carried out. Tsurang, a major river in the Mokokchung district of Nagaland, northeast India, shares great aspects of traditional importance for the Ao Naga tribes and is a part of natural commodity providing water to the agrarian community for irrigation and livestock rearing. However, various environment detrimental activities are practiced along the course of the riverbank, particularly coal mining and agriculture. The present study was conducted to examine the seasonal water quality index (WQI) of the Tsurang river from three selected sampling stations. Overall, the water quality status was rated as "Good" in winter and spring while "Poor" in summer and autumn. In all the seasons, downstream (S3) located at the human settlement area presented higher WQI values compared to upstream (S1) and midstream (S2). The parameters such as turbidity, DO and BOD played a central role in affecting the WQI; although, no such significant roles in case of nutrient elements were observed in affecting the water quality. The WQI revealed that Tsurang river water is deteriorated due to coal mining and other anthropogenic activities practiced along the stretch of the river and the water needs to be pretreated before consumption. The concentration of trace elements like Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cd, Cr, Co, and As in atmospheric particulate matter (PM2.5) was estimated to investigate their seasonal variation, potential sources, and health risk at Jharia coalfield, India, during May 2018 to April 2019. Measured PM2.5 (170 ± 45 μg/m3) exceeded the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (2009) by a factor of 4.25, the Clean Air Act, National Ambient Air Quality Standards (40 CFR part 50) by a factor of 11, and Air Quality Guidelines of World Health Organization (2005) by a factor of 16. Mean concentration of the trace elements were observed in the order of Fe > Mn > Cu > Zn > Cr > Pb > Co > Ni > Cd > As, highest being perceived at the monitoring sites affected by coal mine fire. The significantly higher HQ values posed by PM2.5-bound Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and As and higher HI values (multi-elemental exposure) indicated potential non-carcinogenic risk to the residents of Dhanbad. Higher ECR values in the coal mining areas of JCF indicated higher carcinogenic risk to the population (adults > children) of Dhanbad due to inhalation of PM2.5-bound Cr. Spontaneous combustion of coal in the mines, active mine fire, associated mining activities, heavy vehicular emission, and re-suspended road dust were recognized as the potential sources of the trace elements from the results of PCA and Pearson correlation analysis. A precise, climate-resilient rationing/budgeting of groundwater resources is essential for planning its judicious utilization and development. This study undertakes a pioneering scientific assessment for incorporating the ArcGIS integrated with GEC-2015 guidelines into groundwater budgeting computations for the mining environ. The dynamic groundwater resource has been computed for a 10 km buffer study area of Batura opencast mine, Sohagpur coalfield, India, by applying the modified safe-yield approach cum lumped-parameter water balance method on the inflow and outflow components, to derive the change in storage. The results reveal that: the annual gross groundwater extraction is estimated at 17.41 × 106 m3 while the annual extractable groundwater resource is estimated at 51.82 × 106 m3. The recharge component of nearly twofold the extraction component indicates dominant diffuse (natural) recharge and only a minor need of managed (focussed) recharge measures like an artificial recharge in the study area. This amounts to a 16.87% stage of groundwater extraction value indicating that the study area falls in the safe category. Around 90% of the recharge in the study area is found to be natural replenishment through monsoon rainfall, which, coupled with the occurrence of cyclic fluctuation in the water-level in aquifers, establishes that mining in such areas is a climate-resilient activity vis-a-vis groundwater. Besides, the biological reclamation and afforestation of the mined-out area trigger the reversal of land-use pattern caused by the mining activity, minimizing its disruptive effect on the climate-driven water cycle, while upholding ecologically sustainable industrial development (ESID) principles in the mining areas. Jharia Coalfield (JCF) is one of the oldest coalfields in the eastern part of India and falls under critically polluted areas as per CPCB/MoEFCC Notification. Therefore, a study of air pollution and its management is the demand of the day. This study had been undertaken to know the current status of JCF concerning air quality. Ambient air quality monitoring with reference to particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), SO2, NOx and trace elements had been conducted in the coal mining areas of JCF. The study area was divided into two groups, mainly fire and non-fire for the sampling of air. Principal component analysis (PCA) identified coal mine fire as a major source of air pollution in the mining areas of JCF. Opencast coal mining has caused severe environmental degradation globally. In India, Jharkhand is infamous for the environmental damage already caused by unregulated coal mining practices so far. In the present investigation, surface water samples from 31 locations in Charhi and Kuju coal mining areas were analysed for physical and chemical parameters of water. Statistical analysis was performed to understand the magnitude of contamination and suitability of the water samples for agricultural as well as domestic uses. Analysis of variance indicated significant site-wise (6 out of 15 parameters) and seasonal variations (13 out of 15 parameters), while Pearson correlation indicated significant positive correlations between TDS-EC (r2 = 0.74–0.99) and total hardness—HCO3− (r2 = 0.95–0.98). Scatter plot between Ca, Mg and HCO3 revealed a positive interrelationship in all the three seasons. Surface water quality indices exhibited variable results of sustainable utilization potential of the water for various uses. Though water quality index advocated the quality of water to be good in the majority of the samples, health water quality index based on selected parameters hinted, the majority of the samples to be of poor category. Observations collated together suggest that though the area is in the initial phases of mining, contamination of the surface water bodies is increasing gradually and higher concentrations of metals (As, Fe, Mn, Se) are the most significant problem now. This study can serve as a baseline data and an early sentinel towards the increasing pollution and its effective environmental management in similar mining regions of the world. The present investigation is an attempt to assess the contamination of heavy metals in the ground and surface water of the Singrauli industrial belt area. Pollution indices like heavy metal index (HPI), contamination index (CD) and heavy metal evaluation index (HEI) are used for the evaluation of heavy metal pollution (arsenic As, mercury Hg, cadmium Cd, and lead Pb). Contour maps are constructed to interpret metal spatial distribution. Further, the land-use/land-cover (LULC) maps for the year 2000, 2010 and 2016 are prepared using Landsat satellite data. A total of 48 water samples (Groundwater (27), Surface water (21)) are analysed for heavy metal concentration. Eighty-eight percent of groundwater and 90% of surface water samples are contaminated with Hg. Similarly, high concentrations of Pb and Cd were found in the samples. Surprisingly, all the water samples have As concentration above the WHO permissible limit of 10 ppb. Further, 95% of the samples have an HPI value greater than 100 indicating high heavy metal contamination. CD value denotes contamination of 89% of the samples with heavy metals (As, Hg, Cd, Pb). Through spatial distribution, it can be interpreted that most of the contaminated samples lie near thermal power plants, ash ponds, and coal mines. LULC (land use/land cover) study shows a significant decrease in water bodies by (108 km2), agricultural land by (54 km2) and bare/fallow land by (51 km2) from 2000 to 2016. During these 16 years, there has been a fourfold increase in the overburden, a threefold increase in dumping yards, a 2.5 times increase in urban areas, and a twofold increase in mining areas. Both the environment and the water quality are deteriorating at an alarming rate. Such scientific investigations are relevant for risk management studies of potable water. The knowledge acquired from such assessment shall be considered with utmost priority by concerned authority considering degrading water quality in the study area. The overburden dumps which are created during the process of mining are devoid of supportive and nutritive capacity for biomass development. Restoration of these overburden dumps requires the establishment of a self-sustaining soil–plant system, for which a restoration strategy is needed to accelerate the natural processes of ecosystem development. For eco-restoration of a coal mine spoil dump, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute developed an ecofriendly multidisciplinary approach to restore the fertility of the mine spoil overburden dump. In this regard, an experiment was conducted to restore the fertility of the overburden dump in an area of 20 ha at Durgapur in India. To reclaim the dump, the IBA (integrated biotechnological approach) was used. The integrated biotechnological approach involves the utilization of industrial waste ETP sludge (effluent treatment plant sludge) to support the nutritive capacity for vegetation establishment, inoculation, and isolation of Azotobacter, Bradyrhizobium, and VAM (vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza) spores of Gigaspora and Glomus species along with suitable indigenous trees of ecological and economic importance. The findings of the experimental study revealed that amendment of the mine spoil with organic amendment at 50 t/ha improved the nutrient, microbiological, and physicochemical properties of the coal mine spoil and reduced the toxicity of heavy metals due to increased organic carbon content of the organic amendment effluent treatment plant sludge. Thus, amendment of the effluent treatment plant sludge and biofertilizer application provided better supportive material for the growth of different plant species which resulted into momentous biomass (aboveground biomass and belowground biomass) production thereby improving the productivity and fertility of the mine spoil dump in a short span.
