The main purpose of this paper is the numerical analysis of a class of mathematical models that describe the contact between a thermo-piezoelectric body and a conductive foundation. Under the assumption of a static process, the material's behavior is modeled with a linear thermo-electro-elastic constitutive law and the frictional contact with Signorini's and Tresca's laws. A variational problem is derived and the existence of a unique weak solution is proved by combining arguments from the theory of variational inequalities with linear strongly monotone Lipschitz continuous operators. A successive iteration technique to linearize the problem by transforming it into an incremental recursive form is proposed, and its convergence is established. An Augmented Lagrangian variant, known as the Alternating Direction Multiplier Method (ADMM), is employed to split the original problem into two subproblems, resolve them sequentially, as well as update the dual variables at each iteration. This paper addresses the problem of exponential stability and stabilization for a class of delayed distributed parameter systems, which is modeled by partial integro-differential equations (PIDEs). By employing the vector-valued Wirtinger's inequality, the sufficient condition of exponential stability of the PIDE system with a given decay rate is investigated. The condition is presented by linear matrix inequality (LMIs). After that, we develop a spatial proportional-integral-derivative state-feedback controller that ensures the exponential stabilization of the PIDE system in terms of LMIs. In this paper, we have considered a deterministic mathematical model to analyze effective interventions for meningitis and pneumonia coinfection as well as to make a rational recommendation to public healthy, policy or decision makers and programs implementers. We have introduced the epidemiology of infectious diseases, the epidemiology of meningitis, the epidemiology of pneumonia, and the epidemiology of infection of meningitis and pneumonia. The positivity and boundedness of the sated model was shown. Our model elucidate that, the disease free equilibrium points of each model are locally asymptotically stable if the corresponding reproduction numbers are less than one and globally asymptotically stable if the corresponding reproduction numbers are greater than one. Additionally, we have analyzed the existence and uniqueness of the endemic equilibrium point of each sub models, local stability and global stability of the endemic equilibrium points for each model. By using standard values of parameters we have obtained from different studies, we found that the effective reproduction numbers of meningitis R e f f (m) = 9 and effective reproduction numbers of pneumonia R e f f (p) = 11 that lead us to the effective reproduction number of the meningitis and pneumonia co-infected model is m a x R e f f m , R e f f (p) = 9 . Applying sensitivity analysis, we identified the most influential parameters that can change the behavior of the solution of the meningitis pneumonia coinfection dynamical system are α 1 , α 2 and π . Biologically, decrease in α 1 and increasing in π is a possible intervention strategy to reduce the infectious from communities. Finally, our numerical simulation has shown that vaccination against those diseases, reducing contact with infectious persons and treatment have the great effect on reduction of these silent killer diseases from the communities. In this paper, our aim is mathematical analysis and numerical simulation of a prey-predator model to describe the effect of predation between prey and predator with nonlinear functional response. First, we develop results concerning the boundedness, the existence and uniqueness of the solution. Furthermore, the Lyapunov principle and the Routh–Hurwitz criterion are applied to study respectively the local and global stability results. We also establish the Hopf-bifurcation to show the existence of a branch of nontrivial periodic solutions. Finally, numerical simulations have been accomplished to validate our analytical findings. A discrete element code with impact model has been developed and calibrated to simulate the dynamic behavior of rock materials, with special regard to rock fragmentation upon impact during rock-fall analysis. The paper summarizes the discrete element code, the calibration algorithms developed to identify the model microparameters, and the impact model. Experimental work on drop tests is then used to validate the code on modeling impact fragmentation. It has been found that the developed discrete element code and impact model can reasonably simulate rock fragmentation in drop tests. This paper presents dynamic programming algorithms for generating optimal strip layouts of equal blanks processed by shearing and punching. The shearing and punching process includes two stages. The sheet is cut into strips using orthogonal guillotine cuts at the first stage. The blanks are punched from the strips at the second stage. The algorithms are applicable in solving the unconstrained problem where the blank demand is unconstrained, the constrained problem where the demand is exact, the unconstrained problem with blade length constraint, and the constrained problem with blade length constraint. When the sheet length is longer than the blade length of the guillotine shear used, the dynamic programming algorithm is applied to generate optimal layouts on segments of lengths not longer than the blade length, and the knapsack algorithm is employed to find the optimal layout of the segments on the sheet. This paper introduces a novel approach for extracting the maximum number of non-overlapping test forms from a large collection of overlapping test Sections assembled from a given item bank. The approach involves Solving maximum set packing problems (MSPs). A branch-and-bound MSP algorithm is developed along with techniques adapted from constraint programming to estimate lower and upper bounds on the optimal MSP solution. The algorithm is general and can be applied in other applications including combinatorial auctions. The results of computer simulations and experiments with an operational item bank are presented. This paper proposes the use of a specific combination of discrete and finite element methods for the simulation of systems of deformable bodies in order to reduce the computational cost, when certain assumptions can be made. In particular, the Updated Lagrangian finite element formulation and the central difference time integration method are employed together with certain simplifying assumptions in order to linearize this highly nonlinear contact problem and obtain solutions with realistic computational cost and sufficiently good accuracy. Although previously developed Dielectrophoresis activated cell sorters (DACSes) have achieved high separation efficiency, limitations still exist with respect to the low throughput. In this paper, therefore, a numerical analysis is presented for a novel DACS to achieve not only high efficiency but also high throughput. Additionally, experimental validation is performed based on the results of a numerical simulation. First, streamlines in the channel are investigated according to various flow rate ratios in each outlet. After cells are deflected by a sufficient amount of dielectrophoretic force, they arrive at the tip of the last electrode pair. Their movement is then determined by hydrodynamic force. Therefore, it is important to confirm whether or not the streamline at the tip of the last electrode pair connects to the target area. Based on the streamline analysis results, the particle trajectory under various AC electric fields is investigated using a three-dimensional analysis. Accordingly, an input voltage condition (7 Vp-p at 10 kHz) is selected to confirm the influence of dielectrophoretic force. Conclusively, optimal flow rates under the determined input voltage condition are selected as 10 μl/min and 20 μl/min in outlet A (target area) and outlet B (non-target area), respectively. In order to validate the feasibility of the selected flow rates, a separation test is performed employing a K562 cell-bone marrow cancer cell-as a target cell. In the experiment, the proposed DACS achieves a high throughput of 45000 cells/min as well as a separation efficiency of 96.5% and recovery rate of 47.25%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents computer simulation of the forging process using the finite volume method (FVM). The process of forging is highly non-linear, where both large deformations and continuously changing boundary conditions occur. In most practical cases, the initial billet shape is relatively simple, but the final shape of the end product is often geometrically complex, to the extent that it is commonly obtained using multiple forming stages. Examples of the numerical simulation of the forged pieces provided were created using Msc/SuperForge computer code. The paper reports the results of theoretical and experimental tests of a forming process for producing ball studs which are widely used in the automotive industry. It is proposed that semi-finished ball studs are produced by cross wedge rolling in a double configuration. The theoretical analysis was performed by numerical techniques based on the finite element method. Numerical computations were made using the simulation software DEFORM v 11.0. During the simulations, the accuracy of the adopted tool design was verified, and optimal parameters of the process along with the effect of selected parameters of the process and the quality of produced parts were determined. The proposed rolling process was verified under laboratory conditions using a flat-wedge forging machine available at the Lublin University of Technology. The experimental findings show a high agreement with the numerical results, in terms of both quality and quantity. We study the optimal tax/pension design in a two-period model where individuals differ in both productivity and discount rates or projection bias and where their utility of the retirement period consumption is not independent of the earlier standard of living. We consider both welfarist and paternalistic social objectives. The paternalistic government attempts to correct the projection bias by using a higher discount factor. We derive general mathematical expressions that characterize optimal tax/pension design (marginal tax/subsidy rates). They suggest that the pattern of marginal labor income taxes depends on habit formation. Negative marginal labor income tax rates are possible. To gain a better understanding, we examine numerically the properties of an optimal lifetime redistribution policy with habit formation. We find support for non-linear tax/pension program in which some types of individuals are taxed while some are subsidized. The effect of changes in the degree of habit formation is explored in the numerical simulations as well as the implications of different degrees of correlation between skill and projection bias. A Richardson triple is an ideal fluid flow map gt/ϵ,t,ϵt=ht/ϵktlϵt composed of three smooth maps with separated time scales: slow, intermediate and fast, corresponding to the big, little and lesser whorls in Richardson's well-known metaphor for turbulence. Under homogenization, as limϵ→0, the composition ht/ϵkt of the fast flow and the intermediate flow is known to be describable as a single stochastic flow dtg. The interaction of the homogenized stochastic flow dtg with the slow flow of the big whorl is obtained by going into its non-inertial moving reference frame, via the composition of maps (dtg)lϵt. This procedure parameterizes the interactions of the three flow components of the Richardson triple as a single stochastic fluid flow in a moving reference frame. The Kelvin circulation theorem for the stochastic dynamics of the Richardson triple reveals the interactions among its three components. Namely, (1) the velocity in the circulation integrand is kinematically swept by the large scales and (2) the velocity of the material circulation loop acquires additional stochastic Lie transport by the small scales. The stochastic dynamics of the composite homogenized flow is derived from a stochastic Hamilton's principle and then recast into Lie-Poisson bracket form with a stochastic Hamiltonian. Several examples are given, including fluid flow with stochastically advected quantities and rigid body motion under gravity, i.e. the stochastic heavy top in a rotating frame. A series of shaking table tests were designed and carried out to study the seismic behaviors of a shallow-buried small spacing tunnel with asymmetrical pressure. The key details to shaking table model test, including test equipment, model similarity relation, similarity constant, model box, physical model, layout of transducers, seismic waves, and loading system were presented. The numerical simulation of the shaking table test was also carried out by using a finite element simulation software. The results show that: (1) the Fourier spectrums in the vertical direction and horizontal direction are different at the same measuring point. The structure of tunnel transforms the Fourier spectrum of horizontal direction. (2) The stability of middle rock pillar is poor under seismic wave action. The anchor plays an important role in strengthening the stability of middle rock pillar. The dynamic strain of anchor has accumulative effect. (3) The numerical simulation results are in significant agreement with the shaking table test results. (4) Compared with type of seismic wave, peak seismic wave has a significant effect on acceleration response of tunnel. The peak acceleration response of the tunnel is linear with the peak seismic wave, in the horizontal direction. The peak acceleration response is nonlinear in the vertical direction. Random walks can be used to search complex networks for a desired resource. To reduce search lengths, we propose a mechanism based on building random walks connecting together partial walks (PW) previously computed at each network node. Resources found in each PW are registered. Searches can then jump over PWs where the resource is not located. However, we assume that perfect recording of resources may be costly, and hence, probabilistic structures like Bloom filters are used. Then, unnecessary hops may come from false positives at the Bloom filters. Two variations of this mechanism have been considered, depending on whether we first choose a PW in the current node and then check it for the resource, or we first check all PWs and then choose one. In addition, PWs can be either simple random walks or self-avoiding random walks. Analytical models are provided to predict expected search lengths and other magnitudes of the resulting four mechanisms. Simulation experiments validate these predictions and allow us to compare these techniques with simple random walk searches, finding very large reductions of expected search lengths. We experimentally and numerically characterize multiple filamentation of laser pulses with incident intensities of a few TW/cm2. Propagating 100 TW laser pulses over 42 m in air, we observe a new propagation regime where the filament density saturates. As also evidenced by numerical simulations in the same intensity range, the total number of filaments is governed by geometric constraints and mutual interactions among filaments rather than by the available power in the beam. For the system of multilayer dynamics of fluids in porous media, the second order upwind finite difference fractional steps schemes applicable to parallel arithmetic are put forward. Some techniques, such as calculus of variations, energy method, multiplicative commutation rule of difference operators, decomposition of high order difference operators and prior estimates are adopted. Optimal order estimates are derived to determine the error in the second order approximate solution. A new product-form approximation, based on the method of entropy maximisation (MEM), is characterised for arbitrary closed queueing networks with multiple and distinct classes of jobs. Generalised Exponential (GE) service times, mixed service disciplines, complete buffer sharing and repetitive-service blocking with both fixed (RS-FD) and random destinations (RS-RD). The maximum entropy (ME) approximation implies decomposition of the network into individual multiple class GE/GE/1/N queues satisfying constraints on population and flow conservation which is, in turn, truncated and efficiently implemented by a general convolution recursive procedure for the efficient calculation of the normalising constant and typical performance metrics. A relationship between MEM and reversible closed multiple class queueing networks is identified and it is shown how the ME approximation reduces to the exact solution.
