This paper systematically reviews the literature on how to reduce nutrient emissions to the Baltic Sea cost-effectively and considerations for allocating these costs fairly among countries. The literature shows conclusively that the reduction targets of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) could be achieved at considerably lower cost, if countries would cooperate to implement the least costly abatement plan. Focusing on phosphorus abatement could be prudent as the often recommended measures—wastewater treatment and wetlands—abate nitrogen too. An implication of our review is that the potential for restoring the Baltic Sea to good health is undermined by an abatement strategy that is more costly than necessary and likely to be perceived as unfair by several countries. The southwestern part of the Baltic Sea, including parts of the central European system, the Torne European Suture Zone, and the Ringkobing-Fyn High, is one of the most attractive areas for geoscientists due to its complicated geological structure caused by different tectonic events. In this paper, a local three-dimensional model of the crustal structures was developed based on interactive forward modeling of gravity data in the southwestern part of the Baltic Sea. The model considers sedimentary layers, upper crust, lower crust, and part of the upper mantle and applies the information of the area, including crustal thickness and Moho topography. Seismic sections and existing models in the area were used as the primary information to generate an appropriate initial model to reduce the problem of non-uniqueness, which is recognized as an inherent problem in potential fields modeling. The results indicated that the crustal thickness in the study area varies from 20 to 35 km. The thickest part is located in the Precambrian Baltic crust in the northeastern part of the region, and the thinnest part is in the margin of the Northern German Basin. The depth of Moho discontinuity in this area also varies from 26 to 42 km and shows significant changes on the sides of the Tornquist Zone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents the results of chronological and lithostratigraphic studies of five small lakes located in the northern part of the Karelian Isthmus, where the hypothetical connection between Lake Ladoga and the Baltic Sea existed until the second half of the Holocene when the Neva River broke through in the south. Stratigraphic sequences of these lakes demonstrate the transition from turbulent environments to low-energetic lacustrine sedimentation about 3000–3500 cal. yr BP. This indicates the termination of the northern Ladoga–Baltic connection as a result of isostatic uplift and the formation of the new Lake Ladoga outlet, the Neva River. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Food waste generation has received increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we investigate the availability of information regarding food waste management on-board ships and describe how this information is communicated by companies operating passenger ships in the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, we summarize the aspects that influence efficient management of waste and identify pathways for food waste reduction on-board ships. The main three findings from this study are: (I) the information on waste handling at companies' websites was to a large extent lacking. Food waste was mentioned in 22% of investigated ferry ship operator cases and in 32% of cruise ship operator cases. (II) In the interviews with environmental managers from two passenger ship companies, various aspects of food waste handling on-board ships were identified, which could be further grouped into technical, economic, management, legal and social categories. We suggest that the aspects of waste handling presented in this paper can serve as a framework for detection of the challenges and possibilities for different actors including shipping companies, ports and waste management agents. (III) The pathways towards efficient food waste handling may differ for individual ships, as it depends on vessel age, type of equipment and route schedules. The effort should be put in separating food waste from the rest of waste streams as it enables a clearer picture of the waste produced, increases the handling alternatives and may provide technological and economic benefits. Using a time-dependent phosphorus (P) budget model for the Baltic proper, describing sources and sinks at the external borders of the water column, one may compute the e-folding time T of the adjustment of the winter surface water P concentration c to abruptly changed total P supply. The restoration time TR = 3 T is introduced as a practical measure of the time it takes to achieve 95% of the change of c towards the final, equilibrium, state c . The P budget model, including an internal source emanating from deep anoxic bottoms, also shows that c is proportional to the total P supply to the water column. About 70% of present time total P supply to the Baltic proper comes from deep anoxic bottoms. If deep bottoms were kept oxygenated, this internal P supply would be turned off and the equilibrium concentration c would be reduced by about 70%. This should imply that the Baltic proper may be restored to a state determined by the external P supplies from land-based and oceanic sources. According to the model, restoration would take 10-15 years. Thereafter most of the equipment used for oxygenation may be shut off since also the deepwater oxygen demand by decomposition of fresh organic matter, would have decreased by about 70% implying that the deepwater would be kept oxic by the natural vertical circulation. The model presented in this paper provides a new science-based solution of the eutrophication problem of the Baltic proper, which is of great interest from a management point of view. The intensification of the Baltic Sea eutrophication is associated with the increase of anthropogenic nutrients loads, mainly nitrogen and phosphorus introduced into surface waters from a diffuse, point and natural background sources. Despite the observed decreasing trends in nutrient concentrations in some parts of the Baltic Sea, eutrophication-related indicators continue to deteriorate. This accelerates harmful algal blooms and dissolved oxygen deficits resulting in severe ecosystem disturbance. The paper presents trends, insights and effects of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 91/271/EEC implementation in Poland based on the nutrient riverine loads from Polish territory with particular attention given to the development of municipal wastewater treatment plants under the National Wastewater Treatment Programme 2003–2016. Environmental effects of wastewater infrastructure modernisation are investigated by using available data on the changing nutrient concentrations in the coastal water in 3 basins (Gdansk Basin, Bornholm Basin and Eastern Gotland Basin) belonging to the Polish Exclusive Economic Zone within the Baltic Sea. The results show that the decreasing trend regarding phosphorus loads reduction from municipal effluents was achieved while a stable trend with temporary increases was achieved in terms of nitrogen loads. Moreover, the investigation provides information about the potential bioavailability of discharged effluents before and after the Directive implementation by including total and inorganic forms of nitrogen and phosphorus in the analysis. Currently, only a few clear remains of Stone Age houses, revealed due to their sunken floors, are known to exist at four of the more than four hundred settlement sites of this period in Estonia. The focus of our paper is on three such hunter-gatherer settlement sites of the Narva and Comb Ware cultures, all located in different settings of the Baltic coastal zone. In order to analyse houses at these sites, archaeological collections and archival materials related to the Riigiküla I and Kõnnu sites were re-examined, and the site Jägala Jõesuu V is published here for the first time. Spatial analyses and a series of new radiocarbon dates let us to determine that three potential pit-houses at Kõnnu, dating to the first half of the 5th millennium calBC, and three pit-houses at the Riigiküla I settlement site, dating to the latter part of the 5th millennium calBC, belong to the Narva culture. Two new structures discovered during our analysis at Riigiküla I are related to the Comb Ware culture, along with the pit-house at Jägala Jõesuu V, from the end of the 4th millennium calBC. A comparison with the neighbouring territories shows that the Estonian coastal area forms the southern border of the distribution of pit-houses at least during the Narva and Comb Ware culture periods. This paper applies the concept of cultural ecosystem services (CES) to reveal the diverse benefits the Baltic Sea provides to human well-being. The study identifies and defines relevant CES for marine and coastal environments and applies them in a survey with 4800 respondents from Germany, Finland and Latvia. The relative importance of various CES was determined by asking respondents to allocate 100 points between CES related to recreation, landscape, inspiration, learning and education, spiritual experiences and belonging, historically and culturally important places and the existence of habitats. The results reveal significant differences in the importance of various CES across countries, users and nonusers of the Baltic Sea, as well as respondents with different human–nature relationships. The results emphasize the importance of considering recreation, landscapes and habitats in conservation policies, while acknowledging that all CES are perceived as important by some population groups. This study examined Baltic Sea Marine Heatwaves (MHWs) using 42 years of satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) data. We found that MHWs in warmer months are more intense but shorter compared to MHWs in cooler months. Also, MHWs predominantly affect offshore areas in warmer months, whereas MHWs predominantly impacting coastal seas in cooler months, especially along the eastern coast. Our analysis of interannual variability revealed that, unlike in many other basins worldwide, Baltic MHWs tend to maintain a constant intensity, while their spatial extent has significantly increased over the last few decades. Shortwave radiation notably influences MHW intensity and spatial extent, with additional impacts from longwave radiation in cooler months and latent heat flux in warmer months. Northern Hemisphere teleconnections exhibit stronger correlations with MHWs in the Baltic Sea compared to global-scale climate oscillations, with the Eastern Atlantic pattern having a particularly significant effect on MHW variability in the region. Due to changes in atmospheric circulation and warmer winters, the frequency of strong westerly storms associated with high sea level in ice-free sea conditions has increased on the western coast of Estonia. This trend is especially dangerous for the sections of depositional seashores along the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea such as Pärnu Bay and its surroundings. Pärnu is the largest city in SW Estonia being a popular summer resort with excellent sandy beaches and relevant infrastructure for tourism. Extreme events that may occur in the Pärnu Bay region are irregular extensive floods and sea ice attacks but also strong erosion of beaches. During the last 50 years, the city has suffered from two remarkably high storm surges and associated inundations. The aim of the paper was to analyze the best solutions for coastal zone management in Pärnu Bay area using a System Approach Framework (SAF). It is based on some new results of geomorphic surveys performed in the study area in 2015–2017, review of previous work as well as results from stakeholder meetings. Some formerly proposed flood defence projects and ideas were re-analyzed and new ideas were proposed to better inform the people about risks and reduce the damage in case of catastrophic events. Based on the analysis of the collected data and discussions with the stakeholders, we concluded that hard coastal protection measures would be too expensive and therefore not reasonable for implementation. Developing different kinds of adaptation measures and raising awareness of the people are the most applicable response options to high storm surges and extensive inundations in the Pärnu Bay region. The literature on climate adaptation has so far conceptualized it as a domestic issue, to be governed somewhere between the local and the national scale. By contrast, scholars have shown little interest in exploring the case of cross-boundary adaptation spillovers, where adaptation by one country affects other countries. Two decades of the economic literature on climate mitigation may contribute to bridge this research gap because the problem structure of climate mitigation resembles that of adaptation with cross-boundary spillovers. With this in mind, we ask the following research question: Are there lessons to be learned by applying a mitigation perspective to the governance of adaptation with cross-boundary spillovers? After reviewing the relevant adaptation and mitigation literature, the paper applies mitigation insights to an adaptation case with cross-boundary spillovers: climate change-induced eutrophication in the Baltic Sea. Insights on coalition structures, side-payments, issue-linkage, and trade sanctions provide novel perspectives on the governance structures in place. To improve cooperation on providing adaptation as a public good, smaller regional governance arrangements could be more effective, European subsidies for pollution control might be redirected, and progress on eutrophication could be made a precondition for cooperation on other areas. These perspectives depart both from the way the Baltic Sea eutrophication problem is addressed at present, and from the way public goods are addressed in the adaptation literature. Shipborne gravimetry is an essential method to measure the Earth's gravity field in the coastal and offshore areas. It has the special advantages of high-accuracy and high-resolution measurements in coastal areas compared to other techniques (e.g., satellite gravimetry, airborne gravimetry, and altimetry) used to obtain information about the gravity field. In this paper, we present the data processing strategies of shipborne gravimetry in GFZ. One key point is that the most suitable filter parameters to eliminate disturbing accelerations are determined by studying the GNSS-derived kinematic vertical accelerations and the measurement differences at crossover points. Apart from that, two crucial issues impacting on shipborne gravimetry are the seiches in some harbors and the squat effect in the shallow water. We identified that inclusion of GNSS-derived kinematic vertical accelerations can help to improve the shipborne gravimetry results at these special cases in the Baltic Sea. In the absence of the GNSS-derived vertical accelerations, the cutoff wavelength of the low-pass filter should be large enough to filter out these disturbing acceleration signals which causes a coarser spatial resolution of the gravity measurements. Therefore, the GNSS-derived kinematic vertical accelerations are very useful for optimum shipborne gravimetry. Finally, our shipborne gravimetry measurements are successfully used to verify the previous gravimetry data and improve the current geoid models in the Baltic Sea. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A three-dimensional, regional coupled ice-ocean model based on the open-source Community Earth System Model has been developed and implemented for the Baltic Sea. The model consists of 66 vertical levels and has a horizontal resolution of approx. 2.3 km. The paper focuses on sea ice component results, but the main changes have been introduced in the ocean part of the coupled model. The hydrodynamic part, being one of the most important components, has been also presented and validated. The ice model results were validated against the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and satellite data, and the method of validation based on probability was introduced. In the last two decades, satellite and model results show an increase in the ice extent over the whole Baltic Sea, which is an evidence of a negative trend in air temperature in recent decades and increasing of winter discharge from the catchment area. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of law in the management of the Baltic Sea, with focus on eutrophication. It aims to identify legal instruments or structures realizing an ecosystem approach. This also includes a discussion of the prerequisites of law as contributor to ecosystem-based management (EBM), as well as evaluation of current legal instruments. While ecosystem approach to environmental management is central to contemporary environmental management policy, it is still unclear what such an approach entails in concrete legal terms. The scope of the analysis stretches from international and EU legal regimes, to implementation and regulation within the national legal systems. A conclusion is that the management structures need further development to properly realize EBM, for example, through concretization of management measures, and clarification of duties and responsibilities for their realization. International regulation of the emission of acidic sulphur and nitrogen oxides from commercial shipping has focused on the risks to human health, with little attention paid to the consequences for the marine environment. The introduction of stricter regulations in northern Europe has led to substantial investment in scrubbers that absorb the sulphur oxides in a counterflow of seawater. This paper examines the consequences of smokestack and scrubber release of acidic oxides in the Baltic Sea according to a range of scenarios for the coming decades. While shipping is projected to become a major source of strong acid deposition to the Baltic Sea by 2050, the long-term effect on the pH and alkalinity is projected to be significantly smaller than estimated from previous scoping studies. A significant contribution to this difference is the efficient export of surface water acidification to the North Sea on a timescale of 15-20 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

How willingness to pay for environmental quality changes as incomes rise is a central question in several areas of environmental economics. This paper explores both theoretically and empirically whether or not the willingness to pay (WTP) for pollution control varies with income. Our model indicates that the income elasticity of the marginal WTP for pollution reduction is only constant under very restrictive conditions. Our empirical analysis tests the null hypothesis that the elasticity of the WTP for pollution control with respect to income is constant, employing a multi-country contingent valuation study of eutrophication reduction in the Baltic Sea. Our findings reject this hypothesis, and estimate an income elasticity of the WTP for eutrophication control of 0.1-0.2 for low-income respondents and 0.6-0.7 for high-income respondents. Thus, our empirical results suggest that the elasticity is not constant but is always less than one. This has implications for how benefits transfer exercises, and for theoretical explanations of the environmental Kuznets curve. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Conventional munition dumped into the North Sea and the Baltic Sea close to the German coastline is corroding. A major concern is that biota, including fish, are negatively affected by toxic explosives leaking into marine environments. With the present study, we investigated fish living in close proximity to munition dumping sites for contamination and for signs of health impairments. The flat fish species common dab (Limanda limanda) was used as a model, since it lives in the vicinity of dumping sites and exhibits minor migratory activity. Since explosives are excreted via the bile, the bile fluids from dab were analysed. Further on we inspected the health status of the fish. Results: Dab caught in German coastal waters of the Baltic Sea and the North Sea were contaminated with explosives. Probably due to rapid metabolization, concentrations of the explosive 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) were always below limit of detection, but its metabolites 2-amino-4,6-dinitrotoluene and 4-amino-2,6-dinitrotoluene were detected in bile fluid up to 26.36 ng/ml and 95.91 ng/ml, respectively. Only few fish from the Baltic Sea were positive for the explosive HMX, octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine with a maximum concentration of 0.89 ng/ml. Highest concentrations of TNT metabolites in bile fluid were detected in dab collected near the dumping site "Kolberger Heide" in the bay of Kiel (Baltic Sea). However, also dab from the North Sea were significantly contaminated with TNT metabolites. Conclusions: The present study showed for the first time that fish living close to near shore munition dumping sites in the North Sea are contaminated with explosives. Various health indicators (body condition factors, externally visible fish diseases, parasites or liver anomalies) showed differences in health status between fish living in the North Sea and in the Baltic Sea, respectively. However, the health status of fish caught at the most contaminated site in the Baltic Sea was not worse compared to fish living in less contaminated areas. We conclude that fish living in the vicinity of dumping sites in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea can be significantly contaminated with explosives. This paper calculates the economic value of coastal zones as nutrient filters by using the replacement cost method, which implies that the value is calculated as the savings in costs from reaching politically determined future nutrient target. It is shown that the magnitude of this value depends on the cost of other abatement measures besides nutrient filters of coastal zones, the stringency and timing of the nutrient target, discount rate, and spatial and temporal dispersions of cleaning impacts. The application to the Baltic Sea indicates that the value can amount to approximately 600 billions of SEK (1 Euro = 9.01 SEK, June 3, 2012), which corresponds to 1.9 % of the Baltic Sea region's total gross domestic product. This paper presents and discusses the levels and temporal trends of concentrations of Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu, Zn, and As in livers and Hg in the muscle tissues of cod ( Gadus morhua L) from the Baltic Sea during the period 1994-2010. Concentrations of Pb, Hg, and Cd exhibited significant downward trends. Cu and Zn concentrations exhibited upward trends in the period 1994 to 2010. No trends were detected for concentrations of As. The temporal trends identified in heavy metal concentrations in cod livers corresponded to the directions of changes in concentrations of these elements introduced into the Baltic Sea via river runoff and atmospheric emission, and those in surface and deep waters of the Baltic. Downward trends in the concentrations of toxic metals in cod livers suggest that advantageous changes are occurring in concentrations of heavy metals in the environment of the southern Baltic Sea. In the present study, we used a 3D Coupled Ecosystem Model of Baltic Sea version 1 (3D CEMBSv1) coupled with a copepod model to examine the spatiotemporal distribution of two representative copepod populations in the Gulf of Gdansk (southern Baltic Sea) including Acartia spp. and Pseudocalanus minutus elongatus. The annual cycles simulated for 2000 under realistic weather and hydrographic conditions were studied with the three-dimensional version of the coupled ecosystem-copepod model in the south-eastern Baltic Sea. The paper presents the comparison of simulated and observed copepod development at two stations in the Gulf of Gdansk. A validation of influential state variables gives confidence that the model is able to calculate reliably the stage development of dominant species in the southern Baltic Sea. The number of generations was one for P. m. elongatus and 3-5 for Acartia spp.. A mean of five generations for the latter species per year were estimated in the coastal region and ca. three generations at the Gdansk Deep (in the open sea). Food concentration and temperature as the main factors controlling the development of the investigated copepods as well as salinity as a masking factor (i.e. salinity modifies the rate of their development) in the case of Pseudocalanus minutus elongatus are included in the present study. This paper is devoted to the validation of water level forecasts in the Gulf of Finland. Daily forecasts produced by four setups of operational, three-dimensional Baltic Sea oceanographic models are analyzed using statistical means and are compared with water level observations at three Finnish stations located on the northern coast of the Gulf of Finland. The overall conclusion is that the operational systems were skillful in forecasting water level variations during the study period from November 1, 2003, to January 31, 2005. The factors causing differences between the water level forecasts of different models are discussed as well. An important task of operational sea level forecasting services is to provide accurate and early information about extreme water levels, both positive and negative surges. During the study period, two major winter storms occurred which caused coastal flooding in the region. According to our analysis, the operational models forecast the rise of water levels during these events rather successfully. Nowadays, operational forecasts can provide early warnings of extreme water levels at least 1 day in advance, which may be regarded as a minimum requirement for an operational forecasting system. The paper concludes that the models generally performed very well, with over 93% of the hourly water level forecasts found to be within the range of ±15 cm of the observed water levels, and with the timing of the water level peaks accurately predicted. Further discussion and studies dealing with the assessment of the skills of both operational meteorological and oceanographic forecasts, especially in connection with rare surge events, will be necessary. Skill assessment of operational oceanographic models would be relatively easy if acceptable error limits or a quality system was developed for the Baltic Sea operational models. Unilateral abatement is sometimes advocated in order to set a good example that will make other countries follow. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether existence of correlated cost uncertainty provides an incentive for a country to undertake unilateral abatement. The theoretical model is driven by two main mechanisms; first, a learning effect, as the follower country might reduce its risk premium as it can observe the cost level in the leader country. Second, there is the public good effect, i.e., the marginal benefit of abatement declines when abatement is a public good and other countries contribute to pollution reductions. Results shows that unilateral abatement would be efficient in reducing uncertainty about the unit costs of abatement if a country with low cost uncertainty would undertake abatement first, while a country with initially high cost uncertainty would follow. In this paper, the role of nutrient transports between marine basins is investigated for cost-effective solutions to predetermined marine basin targets. The interdependent advective nutrient transports as well as retentions among the seven major marine basins of the Baltic Sea are described by input-output analysis. This is in contrast to prior economic studies of transboundary water pollution that include only direct transport between the basins. The analytical results show that the difference in impacts between transport specifications depends mainly on the ‘openness’ of the basins, that is, their transports with other basins. The application on Baltic Sea shows significant differences in costs and policy design between the nutrient transport specifications. The reason is that the Sea is characterized by long water and nutrient residence times, so relatively large part of nutrients are transported among basins. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the impact of atmospheric variability on ocean circulation in tidal and non-tidal basins. The data are generated by an unstructured-grid numerical model resolving the dynamics in the coastal area, as well as in the straits connecting the North Sea and Baltic Sea. The model response to atmospheric forcing in different frequency intervals is quantified. The results demonstrate that the effects of the two mechanical drivers, tides and wind, are not additive, yet non-linear interactions play an important role. There is a tendency for tidally and wind-driven circulations to be coupled, in particular in the coastal areas and straits. High-frequency atmospheric variability tends to amplify the mean circulation and modify the exchange between the North and the Baltic Sea. The ocean response to different frequency ranges in the wind forcing is area-selective depending on specific local dynamics. The work done by wind on the oceanic circulation depends strongly upon whether the regional circulation is tidally or predominantly wind-driven. Purpose: Large quantities of green seaweeds, resulting from the eutrophication, are cast ashore on the beaches of Baltic Sea (Poland). There is a necessity to collect this biomass and dispose in a cost-effective and environmental-friendly method. In the present paper, preliminary study on the possibility of composting of Baltic algae is described. After 8 weeks, algal compost and compost extract were produced. The obtained bio-products are expected to enhance plant growth and crop yield since seaweeds are known to be rich in macro- and microelement nutrients, amino acids, vitamins and plant growth promoting substances. Methods: The obtained compost and compost extract were characterized in terms of the content of micro- and macroelements and toxic metals. The phytotoxicity of products were then biologically evaluated in germination tests on garden cress ( Lepidium sativum) and radish ( Raphanus sativus). In the control group, both plant species were watered with distilled water. After the experiment, dry weight of the cultivated plants was measured. Moreover, yield and the content of and micro- and macronutrients in plants was determined. Results: Results showed that there were no phytotoxic effects in both cases and the addition of compost and extract increased the plant growth. The difference in weight for both plants between the examined groups was insignificant. The biomass of plants fertilized with the algal compost and extract was biofortified in micro- and macroelements (in particular B, Fe, Cu, Zn, Ca, K, S). Conclusions: According to these results, composting is a useful technology both to solve waste disposal problems and to produce a valuable organic fertilizer. Until recently, the general biodiversity concepts have suggested common patterns of species richness dynamics for both small planktonic and large benthic organisms in the gradients of environmental factors, including salinity, which is the major abiotic characteristic that influences the diversity of flora and fauna in coastal marine ecosystems. Recent studies discovered an extremely species-rich aquatic microworld and resulted in proposing new concepts and shifting the paradigms in biodiversity studies, including those on planktonic unicellular eukaryotes such as protists. As a result, Remane's species-minimum concept has been revisited and the range of its application updated. This paper provides a review of the studies dedicated to establishing, developing, and analyzing the novel protistan species-maximum concept for the critical salinity zone (5-8‰), or the horohalinicum. The obtained new data contribute to the formation of the modern views on aquatic ecosystem dynamics, biodiversity conservation, and effective ecological management aimed at maintaining the environmental balance and the rational use of marine biological resources. The paper summarizes the results of the long-term complex satellite monitoring of the Black and Baltic seas. Data from synthetic aperture radars (SARs) constitute the experimental basis for the investigation of satellite. In addition to radar data, the data of the visible and infrared bands from MODIS Terra/Aqua, MERIS Envisat, Landsat series sensors are used. The features of the manifestation of hydrodynamic processes, submesoscale eddies in particular, in satellite radar and optical images in a period of intense phytoplankton bloom are discussed. A relationship is established between the intensity and duration of the phytoplankton bloom in the regions of observation and the frequency of the appearance of long-lasting wakes behind moving ships in SAR images. These wakes appear as long narrow bright bands of enhanced backscattered signal extending for tens and sometimes hundreds of kilometers. It is proposed to consider the wakes of this type as indicators of the areas and duration of intense phytoplankton bloom. Satellite observations over the Black and Baltic Seas conducted for more than ten years have shown that long-lasting ship wakes are influenced by powerful jet streams, such as those associated with the passage of eddies that leads to shifts and deformations. The structure of coastal land cover in Estonia is intricate and exhibits considerable differences from site to site. The diverse geomorphology of the seashores is one of the key factors affecting the speed and magnitude of land cover changes. Likewise, the history of human inhabitance on the coast has also shaped the character of land cover. The Estonian coastal zone has experienced abrupt and radical changes in land ownership and its related land use during the last century. The main objectives of this paper are: 1) to give an overview of land use and the trends of development of land cover pattern along different parts of the Estonian coast; and 2) to analyze the relationships of natural and human processes and their cumulative impact on the evolution of coastal land cover pattern in Estonia. This study is based on results obtained during fieldwork in the study areas and on the analysis of large-scale (1:10,000) historical maps. In agriculturally dominant coastal areas, the traditional open landscape of fields and grassland at the beginning of the 20th century had been replaced by woodland and grasslands with shrubs by the start of the 21st century. Expansion of reed beds in areas of former seashore grasslands is another striking phenomenon. The structure of land cover on forested coasts has been fairly stable during the last 100 years. Areas of urban sprawl are characterised by dramatic changes in land cover structure. The paper describes changing patterns of commercial fish catch in the downstream part of the Neva River and the eastern Gulf of Finland and analyzes drivers of these changes for the period 1929-1995. We summarize catch data on 20 species and species groups of fishes and lamprey, as well as available abiotic data (salinity, temperature and water transparency). Water transparency gradually decreased during the 20th century being inseparable from a number of non-quantified anthropogenic factors, thus it can be used as an integral index of anthropogenic loading on the ecosystem. Because fisheries statistics were not published regularly, catch data were extracted from archives and various publications. Fishing locations, gear and target species changed over time in relation to each other, reflecting technological developments in fisheries, commercial demands for fishery products and the abundance of fish populations. Until the 18-19th centuries, fisheries took place mostly in rivers where weirs and set nets targeted sturgeon, salmon and whitefish. By the end of the 19th century, herring and smelt were the main targets of fixed nets in coastal areas. A century later, the main commercial species, herring, was harvested with pelagic trawls operating offshore in the Gulf. This evolution in fisheries, along with other anthropogenic activities, caused severe declines in diadromous species. Spawning migrations that make them easy to catch, and their high market value, make diadromous fish more vulnerable than other groups. Canonical correspondence analysis showed that catches of most diadromous species decreased with increasing transparency, which may reflect their response to anthropogenic pressure. Marine and freshwater fish suffered from anthropogenic pressure, but to a lesser extent probably because of a wider distribution and dispersal, and more capital-intensive fishing methods. Catches of marine species, except herring, significantly increased in the 1970-1980s when salinity was comparatively high. We found no correlation of fish catches with temperature. The paper presents unique data of plutonium Pu study in seabirds from northern Eurasia, permanently or temporally living at the southern Baltic Sea coast. Together, ten marine birds species were examined, as follows: three species that permanently reside at the southern Baltic, four species of wintering birds, and three species of migrating birds; 366 samples were analyzed. The obtained results indicated plutonium was non-uniformly distributed in organs and tissues of analyzed seabirds. The highest Pu content was found in the digestion organs and feathers, the lowest in muscles. Also, the internal radiation doses from Pu were evaluated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Riparian buffer zones are the only measure which has been used extensively in Sweden to reduce phosphorus losses from agricultural land. This paper describes how the FyrisSKZ web tool can be used to evaluate allocation scenarios using data from the Svärta River, an agricultural catchment located in central Sweden. Three scenarios are evaluated: a baseline, a uniform 6-m-wide buffer zone in each sub-catchment, and an allocation of areas of buffer zones to sub-catchments based on the average cost of reduction. The total P reduction increases by 30 % in the second scenario compared to the baseline scenario, and the average reduction per hectare increases by 90 % while total costs of the program fall by 32 %. In the third scenario, the average cost per unit of reduction (€163 kg P) is the lowest of the three scenarios (58 % lower than the baseline) and has the lowest total program costs. Two specimens of Baltic herring Clupea harengus membras with anatomically different signs of synchronous hermaphroditism, discovered for the first time in the eastern part of the Gulf of Finland, are described. Individuals with abnormal gonads did not differ from ordinary representatives of the species in other biological characteristics and external morphology. Currently, there is a major concern about the future of nutrient loads discharged into the Baltic Sea from Polish rivers because they are main contributors to its eutrophication. To date, no watershed-scale studies have properly addressed this issue. This paper fills this gap by using a scenario-modeling framework applied in the Reda watershed, a small (482 km) agricultural coastal area in northern Poland. We used the SWAT model to quantify the effects of future climate, land cover, and management changes under multiple scenarios up to the 2050s. The combined effect of climate and land use change on N-NO and P-PO loads is an increase by 20-60 and 24-31 %, respectively, depending on the intensity of future agricultural usage. Using a scenario that assumes a major shift toward a more intensive agriculture following the Danish model would bring significantly higher crop yields but cause a great deterioration of water quality. Using vegetative cover in winter and spring (VC) would be a very efficient way to reduce future P-PO loads so that they are lower than levels observed at present. However, even the best combination of measures (VC, buffer zones, reduced fertilization, and constructed wetlands) would not help to remediate heavily increased N-NO loads due to climate change and agricultural intensification. In this paper we describe the results of a research campaign dedicated to the studies of aerosol optical properties in different regions of both the open Baltic Sea and its coastal areas. During the campaign we carried out simultaneous measurements of aerosol optical depth at 4 stations with the use of the hand-held Microtops II sun photometers. The studies were complemented with aerosol data provided by the MODIS. In order to obtain the full picture of aerosol situation over the study area, we added to our analyses the air mass back-trajectories at various altitudes as well as wind fields. Such complex information facilitated proper conclusions regarding aerosol optical depth and Ångström exponent for the four locations and discussion of the changes of aerosol properties with distance and with changes of meteorological factors. The Kaliningrad earthquakes of September 21, 2004, were unpredicted and unprecedented in intensity. These features determine the necessity of a thorough search for the historical records on past strong seismic events in the region. Based on the discovered historical data, the paper analyzes the seismic activation at the beginning of the 14 century. The historical event is parameterized and compared with the 2004 Kaliningrad earthquakes. The present paper falls within the trend of research into interactions between various pollutants emitted anthropogenically into the environment and focuses on mercury and styrofoam debris. The study covers part of the Southern Baltic's drainage area. Apart from styrofoam and beach sand, the research involved mosses, which are bioindicators of atmospheric metal pollution. The research has shown that mercury present in the environment becomes associated with styrofoam debris. The median for mercury concentrations in virgin styrofoam samples (0.23 ng g dry weight (d.w.)) and in beach sand samples (0.69 ng g d.w.) was an order of magnitude lower than in the styrofoam debris (5.20 ng g d.w.). The highest mercury content observed in styrofoam debris (3,863 ng g d.w.) exceeded the standards for bottom sediment and soil. The binding of mercury to styrofoam debris takes place in water, and presumably also through contact with the ground. A significant role in this process was played by biotic factors, such as the presence of biofilm and abiotic ones, such as solar radiation and the transformations of mercury forms related to it. As a result, mercury content in styrofoam debris underwent seasonal changes, peaking in summertime. Furthermore, the regional changes of mercury content in the studied debris seem to reflect the pollution levels of the environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The eutrophication status of the entire Baltic Sea is classified using a multi-metric indicator-based assessment tool. A total of 189 areas are assessed using indicators where information on reference conditions (RefCon), and acceptable deviation (AcDev) from reference condition could be combined with national monitoring data from the period 2001-2006. Most areas (176) are classified as 'affected by eutrophication' and only two open water areas and 11 coastal areas are classified as 'unaffected by eutrophication'. The classification is made by application of the recently developed HELCOM Eutrophication Assessment Tool (HEAT), which is described in this paper. The use of harmonized assessment principles and the HEAT tool allows for direct comparisons between different parts of the Baltic Sea despite variations in monitoring activities. The impaired status of 176 areas is directly related to nutrient enrichment and elevated loads from upstream catchments. Baltic Sea States have implemented nutrient management strategies since years which have reduced nutrient inputs. However, eutrophication is still a major problem for large parts of the Baltic Sea. This paper presents an overall bioinvasion impact assessment on the scale of a large marine region-the Baltic Sea, as defined by the Helsinki Commission. The methodology is based on a classification of the abundance and distribution range of alien species and the magnitude of their impacts on native communities, habitats and ecosystem functioning aggregated in a 'Biopollution Level' index (BPL) which ranges from 'no impact' (BPL = 0) to 'massive impact' (BPL = 4). The assessment performed for nine Baltic sub-regions revealed that documented ecological impact is only known for 43 alien species out of 119 registered in the Sea. The highest biopollution (BPL = 3, strong impact) occurs in coastal lagoons, inlets and gulfs, and the moderate biopollution (BPL = 2)-in the open sea areas. The methodology was also used to classify species into alien (BPL = 0) versus 'impacting' species (BPL > 0), which can be divided into 'potentially invasive' (BPL = 1) and 'invasive' (BPL > 1) ones. No clear correlation between the number of established alien and impacting species was found in the sub-regions of the Baltic Sea. The methodology, although requiring a substantial research effort, proved to be useful for interregional comparisons and evaluating the bioinvasion effects of individual alien species. Coastal dune ecosystems are among the most dynamic habitats with high conservation value in Europe but are also under strong anthropogenic pressure regarding coastal protection and recreation. Hence, it is of high importance to know about long-term natural and anthropogenic changes and development of protected dune habitats for nature conservation, as well as for coastal management. This paper aims to identify the vegetation dynamics on the Łeba Bar/Poland over a period of 74 years by cartometric comparison using modern Geographical Information System (GIS). To quantify the rate of vegetation dynamics two aerial photographs dating from 1932 and 2006 were digitalized and analyzed with GIS to produce digital vegetation maps. Information about decrease, increase and stability of vegetation types of this area are discussed. The results show that there has been a clear reduction in the total area of bare sand and a considerable increase of woodlands and dense grass communities. Nevertheless, the remaining extensive drift sand areas and deflation hollows on the Łeba Bar offer one of the most important habitats for pioneer vegetation on bare sand of migrating dunes and dunes at the Southern Baltic coast. The present work proved the need to observe the future development of the vegetation communities and to implement management measures to maintain the dynamic of this unique dune landscape. The paper contains the results of natural film experiments carried out on inland and coastal waters in the Dead Vistula catchment area and mouth during 2000–2002, using the integrated Langmuir trough–Wilhelmy plate system. The static film parameters result from the generalized scaling procedures applied to the surface pressure–area isotherms. They appear to reflect in a quantitative and sensitive way the film composition ( A lim, M w, E isoth), film solubility and the miscibility of its components (via R, Δ S c and y factors), and surface concentration (πeq, Γeq). The adsorption kinetics parameters: effective diffusion coefficient D eff/ D and activation energy barrier E a/ RT are derived from dynamic surface pressure. There is a reason to suggest that certain classes of film-forming components or ‘end-members’ may dominate the static and dynamic surface properties. Variation in the surface rheological parameters of source-specific biosurfactants is postulated to reflect organic matter dynamics in natural waters and were measured for the Dead Vistula river, its tributaries and the adjacent coastal area. Although increases in sedimentation have been proposed to interfere with benthic communities in many coastal areas worldwide, few experimental studies have investigated the effect of sedimentation on community composition and assessed species-specific responses. In a field experiment on a rocky shore on the Swedish east coast (northern Baltic Proper) we confirmed the hypotheses that ambient sedimentation influences macroalgal abundance and community composition, and that species-specific responses to sedimentation correlate with reproductive strategies. We followed the establishment and development of macroalgal vegetation on artificial substrates at 8-m and 15-m depth for 4.5 years while manipulating the depositional environment by regularly removing accumulated sediment. Sediment removal significantly favoured macroalgal development and vegetation cover. Responses of macroalgal species to the sediment treatments were clearly species-specific; for example, the ephemeral green algae (Cladophora glomerataandEnteromorphaspp.) were highly tolerant to sedimentation while belt-forming perennial brown algae (Fucus vesiculosusandSphacelaria arctica) were not. Accordingly, multivariate analyses (redundancy analysis) showed that variance in species abundances were significantly correlated to sediment conditions. The effect of sediment removal was higher at 15-m than at 8-m depth and some species’ distributions seemed limited in depth by the present sediment load (e.g.F. vesiculosus). Vegetative propagation was common in the study area and many species mainly depended on dispersal by fragmentation. Generally, species with an extended reproductive period, either by long continuous spore release (C. glomerataandEnteromorphaspp.) or vegetative dispersal by fragmentation (e.g.Furcellaria lumbricalisandPolysiphonia fucoides), were most tolerant to sedimentation. This paper demonstrates long-term effects of sediment deposition on the development of a macroalgal community over several growing seasons. The results indicate that variation in sediment loads is an important constraint for species’ local distributions and abundances, and affects the composition of sublittoral rocky-shore macroalgal communities. The isopod Idotea baltica is the most important benthic herbivore in the Baltic Sea. There exists a significant correlation between the distribution of the adult isopod and the belts of bladder wrack Fucus vesiculosus. However, following the eutrophication induced blooms of the filamentous macroalga Pilayella littoralis and the disappearance of F. vesiculosus a notable increase in idoteid abundances has been observed. The aim of this paper was (1) to evaluate experimentally whether F. vesiculosus provides either food, shelter or both to the isopods and (2) to estimate the role of associated filamentous algae in the habitat selection process. Amongst six abundant macroalgal species, about 50% of isopod population was attracted to F. vesiculosus covered with the filamentous algae P. littoralis. The majority of the remaining part of the population was either swimming freely or attracted to non-epiphytic P. littoralis. When both live algae and artificial substrata were provided, P. littoralis growing on artificial substrata was clearly preferred by the isopods over epiphyte-free F. vesiculosus. In the grazing experiment where I. baltica was allowed to choose between F. vesiculosus and P. littoralis the latter contributed practically 100% of the diet of the isopod. The total inventory and distribution of Extractable Organic Chlorine (EOCl) has been investigated in an estuary exposed to pulp mill effluents for over 50 yr. The estuarine turnover of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and associated pollutants was studied using a model describing important processes for EOCl accumulation. The recipient has a low retention of SPM due to dominating stratified conditions in the water column. The total inventory of EOCl in the sediment is therefore relatively low as compared with the total discharge. It was found that the vertical distribution of EOCl has a close relationship to the extent of chlorine use at the mill. Discharges of SPM from the pulp production process play a major role in establishing the chronology of the sediment. A modernisation of the mill from 1986 to 1991 considerably reduced the discharges of chlorinated substances. In the near future there will be an accumulation of EOCl in the estuary. Coastal lagoons and estuaries are hot spots to accumulate river basin-related plastic leakage. However, no official methodology exists to investigate their relatively short, rich in organic matter beaches, and the knowledge of pollution of lagoons is scarce worldwide. This study aimed to develop a methodology suitable for large micro (2–5 mm), meso (5–25 mm), and macro-litter (>25 mm) monitoring at sandy inner-coastal waters that would provide comparable results to the intensively used OSPAR 100 m method. The method proposed in this study is based on two 40 m2 rectangular polygons placed on the tidal accumulation zone for macro-litter enumeration and two 1 m2 squares for micro- and meso-litter. This method has been applied to 23 beaches from three inner-coastal waters of the Baltic Sea. This study shows that the litter densities between lagoons and bays differ and depend on the river output intensity and the retention capacity. The "Construction material", "Plastic pieces 2–5 mm", and "Plastic pieces 5–25 mm" were among this study's top ten most common litter items. Experts allocated these items to the "Land based industry and trade" source, which indicates that lagoons and bays through the connection of the major rivers could be a potential sink of land-based litter. An evident strength of the methodology established is the capability to determine litter of all sizes, low-cost and time-efficiency, implementable for volunteer-based monitoring; provides comparable results to the most commonly used methods for investigating litter pollution on coastal beaches. The Baltic Sea is among the fastest-warming seas globally in recent decades affecting biogeochemical conditions such as euxinic areas but also pelagic and benthic marine ecosystems. It is therefore crucial to understand how this heat gain is distributed vertically. We used reconstructed atmospheric forcing fields for 1850–2008 to perform an ocean climate simulation that adequately captures climatogical temperature and salinity profiles. Then, a water mass classification distinguishes three water masses corresponding to the classical view, warm and fresh surface waters, cold and fresh intermediate waters, and cold and salty bottom waters, and two transition water masses. The temperature trends show a similar three layers pattern with fast warming at the surface (~ 0.06 K decade− 1) and bottom (> 0.04 K decade− 1) and slow in the intermediate layers (< 0.04 K decade− 1). The slow warming in the intermediate layer is explained by both weakly warmed water winter convection and the summer surface thermocline isolating the intermediate layers. The warming in the deep layers is related to warm surface inflow from the North Sea and Baltic proper in the southern and northern Baltic Sea respectively. Furthermore, sensitivity experiments show that the warming magnitude is controlled by rising air temperature while the vertical distribution of heat gain is related to surface wind conditions. Finally, the North Atlantic Oscillation and Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation are well correlated with the temperature minimum and thus modulate the magnitude of warming in the intermediate layers on shorter time scales. This study provides a new picture of the Baltic Sea's warming and suggests that this complexity is essential for understanding the influence of climate change on marine ecosystems. Since its introduction into the Baltic Sea about ten years ago, the polychaete species Marenzelleria cf. viridis has spread rapidly. Meanwhile, this spionid settled in remarkable numbers predominantly in the coastal waters which provide some of the more variable and unstable habitats in terms of abiotic conditions. In the present paper, some of the underlying biochemical and physiological processes were experimentally examined which enables this polychaete to deal with several kinds of environmental stress such as variations in salinities, low oxygen concentrations and occurrence of hydrogen sulphide. The results obtained reveal that in the process of acclimation to different salinities free amino acids are involved, mainly alanine and glycine. The content of these amino acids were increased in worms acclimated to a higher salinity. When exposed to low ambient oxygen concentrations (severe hypoxia) M. cf. viridis started to produce energy anaerobically via pathways known from several other marine organisms. The presence of hydrogen sulphide in higher concentrations (1 mmol l-1) results in a more rapid production of succinate (indicator for anaerobic energy production via the succinate-propionate pathway) as compared to hypoxia alone, indicating a higher energy demand. Nevertheless, when exposed to enhanced ambient hydrogen sulphide concentrations (3 mmol l-1), M. cf. viridis is less affected by this toxic compound than other marine species, such as the related species Marenzelleria cf. wireni (North Sea). The field data indicate that the metabolic response obtained under experimental conditions is also important in the worm's natural habitat. Although the extent of anaerobic metabolites produced as well as the amount of thiosulphate (main sulphide detoxification product) was lower in the field as compared to the experiments, M. cf. viridis very likely has to face hypoxia and hydrogen sulphide in higher concentrations in its natural habitat.
