This paper presents the first example of how to systematically identify the submarine landslide source of a tsunami using an innovative hybrid approach. This ground-breaking method is developed to resolve the puzzle around the source mechanism of the mysterious tsunami observed on 6th February 2023 in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The tsunami followed the two inland Mw 7.8 and Mw 7.5 Türkiye–Syria earthquakes, which occurred consequently with a 9 h interval on this day. The first earthquake (Mw 7.8) had an epicentral distance of 90 km from the nearest coast, which is closer than the second one (Mw 7.5) to the coast and yet its crustal deformation was almost entirely limited to inland. Therefore, the co-seismic surface displacement generated by the earthquake was ruled out as the source of the tsunami, confirmed by numerical modelling. Here, we hypothesized that the tsunami was most likely generated by a submarine landslide triggered by the earthquake. Analysis of tide gauge observations revealed that the waves arrived from 27 min to 48 min after the first earthquake (Mw 7.8) at different coastal locations, implying that the potential submarine landslide was triggered by the first earthquake (Mw 7.8). Backward tsunami travel time mapping using tide gauge observations guided us to constrain the area of the potential landslide. We approximated the dimensions of the landslide using spectral analysis of the tsunami observations. Consequently, an iterative trial-and-error approach was employed to confirm the landslide source of the tsunami by defining various informed alternative landslide scenarios and applying numerical modeling. Modelling showed that a submarine landslide can reproduce the tsunami observations reasonably well. It is located on a steep slope of the seafloor approximately 50 km from Arsuz. Landslides are one of the devastating geohazards that cause extensive socio-economic and environmental damages on local, regional, and global scales. Previous studies based on digital media sources have attracted attention to the high fatal landslide rate in Turkey, at a continental or global scale; however, the preparation of a comprehensive and long-term database for Turkey has been neglected until today. To examine this data gap, we present a new database of fatal landslide events resulting in fatalities from 1929 to 2019, which has been compiled using Turkish national and local printed and digital media reports, academic papers, disaster, and city annual reports. The fatal database of Turkey (FATALDOT) shows that, in total, 1343 people were killed in 389 fatal landslide events. The spatiotemporal distribution of the fatal landslides highlighted increasing trends with reference to two distinct hotspot zones throughout the Eastern Black Sea and Marmara Region, mostly around Istanbul megacity. Our results show that there has been a significant uniformity between the number of fatalities and fatal landslides triggered by anthropogenic and natural factors over the past decade, indicating an increasing dominance of human activities in fatality rates. Our findings also, for the first time, remarked the potential signatures of the economic crisis and political steadiness on fatal landslide trends. Nevertheless, we conclude that the increasing rate of anthropogenic disturbances in urban and mountainous areas, together with regional variances in topography and climatic setting, is essential in governing the pattern of fatal landslides. This paper focuses on the evaluation of temporal and spatial propagations of impulse waves using 3D numerical simulation-based models for a potential landslide area in the Tersun Dam reservoir, Northeast Turkey. The topographical model was created using Stereo Lithography files, and a drift-flux model was used to simulate the landslides. The wave generation was simulated using the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations. The Drift-Flux approach was selected, and a renormalization group-based k-ε turbulence model was used to create a fluid–solid coupled model. The results show that a 16.5-m impulse wave is created as a result of sliding material hitting the water at a velocity of 16.4 m/s. The wave will reach the opposite shore in 27.4 s, and the run-up height will reach up to 48.8 m. As the wave, with an average velocity of 11.6 m/s in the reservoir, propagates toward the dam body, its height will decrease, and a 3.7-m-high wave will hit the dam in 155 s. A validation analysis performed using empirical equations and laboratory model tests indicates small differences in the results. The main reason for these differences is that the evaluation of wave properties is independent of the type of mass movement in empirical methods. The paper proposes a methodology for quantitative landslide risk assessment for regional-scale analysis. Each component of risk, i.e., hazard, vulnerability, and consequence analysis, is quantitatively assessed. The developed landslide risk assessment methodology is tested in Kumluca watershed, in Bartın, Turkey. Geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques are used to create landslide factor maps, to obtain susceptibility maps, hazard maps, elements at risk, and risk maps. Susceptibility maps are obtained by using a logistic regression model while adopting a grid-based mapping unit. In addition to spatial probability of occurrence of damaging events, landslide hazard calculation requires the determination of the temporal probability. Precipitation triggers the majority of landslides in the study region. The critical rainfall thresholds were estimated by using antecedent rainfalls and landslide occurrence dates based on Gumble Distribution approach. The elements at risk are extracted from existing digital cadastral databases and the vulnerabilities are obtained by adopting some generalization approaches. To conclude, quantitative risk maps were produced on a continuous scale where numerical values indicate the distribution of risk including the annual probability of expected losses in TL per pixel and the annual probability of life loss per pixel for property and life, respectively. For the considered case study, it is found that the annual probability of property loss is the highest for the provincial highway and the provincial road. The property loss map highlights that the annual expected loss to power network is medium. The annual probability of life loss map illustrates that the region surrounded by Kumluca town, Kızıllar, and Zafer villages have medium and high annual expected loss of population values, respectively. Of the natural hazards in Turkey, landslides are the second most devastating in terms of socio-economic losses, with the majority of landslides occurring in the Eastern Black Sea Region. The aim of this study is to use a statistical approach to carry out a landslide susceptibility assessment in one area at great risk from landslides: the Sera River Basin located in the Eastern Black Sea Region. This paper applies a multivariate statistical approach in the form of a logistics regression model to explore the probability distribution of future landslides in the region. The model attempts to find the best fitting function to describe the relationship between the dependent variable, here the presence or absence of landslides in a region and a set of independent parameters contributing to the occurrence of landslides. The dependent variable (0 for the absence of landslides and 1 for the presence of landslides) was generated using landslide data retrieved from an existing database and expert opinion. The database has information on a few landslides in the region, but is not extensive or complete, and thus unlike those normally used for research. Slope, angle, relief, the natural drainage network (including distance to rivers and the watershed index) and lithology were used as independent parameters in this study. The effect of each parameter was assessed using the corresponding coefficient in the logistic regression function. The results showed that the natural drainage network plays a significant role in determining landslide occurrence and distribution. Landslide susceptibility was evaluated using a predicted map of probability. Zones with high and medium susceptibility to landslides make up 38.8 % of the study area and are located mostly south of the Sera River Basin and along streams. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the cut slope stability problems of southern engineered slopes along 57 km long Mersin-Tarsus Motorway. While the northern slopes were slipping during and following construction, the stability problems occurred at southern slopes after heavy rains in December 2001. The most recent slope stability problem took place on chainage at the km 10+800 embankment on 9 April 2009. About 3.62 × 10 m soil materials have currently slipped at 60 different location. After the occurrence of slides, different remedial methods (reshaping slopes, soil improvements, etc.) have been applied to stabilize the slipped slopes. The slope stability studies were carried out using back analysis to determine the slope failure mechanisms and to estimate effective shear strength parameters. Pore water pressures increase following intense rainfall events and cause reduced resistance to shear strength at the engineered slopes. In addition, the affects of the static and dynamic parameters to analyse the state of the slope after excavation were investigated and possible remedies to improve the state (toe rockfill and retaining wall) were assessed for motorway slopes through determining the slope stability with water parameter and seismic loading, separately and together. Landslides cause heavy damage to property and infrastructure, in addition to being responsible for the loss of human lives in many parts of the Turkey. The paper presents GIS-based spatial data analysis for landslide susceptibility mapping in the regions of the Sultan Mountains, West of Akşehir, and central part of Turkey. Landslides occur frequently in the area and seriously affect local living conditions. Therefore, spatial analysis of landslide susceptibility in the Sultan Mountains is important. The relationships between landslide distributions with the 19 landslide affecting parameters were analysed using a Bayesian model. In the study area, 90 landslides were observed. The landslides were randomly subdivided into 80 training landslides and 10 test landslides. A landslide susceptibility map was produced by using the training landslides. The test landslides were used in the accuracy control of the produced landslide susceptibility map. Approximately 9% of the study area was classified as high susceptibility zone. Medium, low and very low susceptibility zones covered 8, 23 and 60% of the study area, respectively. Most of the locations of the observed landslides actually fall into moderate (17.78%) and high (77.78. %) susceptibility zones of the produced landslide susceptibility map. This validates the applicability of proposed methods, approaches and the classification scheme. The high susceptibility zone is along both sides of the Akşehir Fault and at the north-eastern slope of the Sultan Mountains. It was determined that the surface area of the Harlak and Deresenek formations, which have attained lithological characteristics of clayey limestone with a broken and separated base, and where area landslides occur, possesses an elevation of 1,100-1,600 m, a slope gradient of 25°-35° and a slope aspect of 22.5°-157.5° facing slopes. Landslides and their assessments are of great importance since they damage properties, infrastructures, environment, lives and so on. Particularly, landslide inventory, susceptibility, and hazard or risk mapping have become important issues in the last few decades. Such maps provide useful information and can be produced by qualitative or quantitative methods. The work presented in this paper aimed to assess landslide susceptibility in a selected area, covering 570.625 km in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey, by two quantitative methods. For this purpose, in the first stage, a detailed landslide inventory map was prepared by extensive field studies. A total of 96 landslides were mapped during these studies. To perform landslide susceptibility analyses, six input parameters such as topographical elevation, lithology, land use, slope, aspect and distance to streams were considered. Two quantitative methods, logistic regression and fuzzy approach, were used to assess landslide susceptibility in the selected area. For the fuzzy approach, the fuzzy and, or, algebraic product, algebraic sum and gamma operators were considered. At the final stage, 18 landslide susceptibility maps were produced by the logistic regression and fuzzy operators in a GIS (Geographic Information System) environment. Two performance indicators such as ROC (relative operating characteristics) and cosine amplitude method ( r) were used to validate the final susceptibility maps. Based on the analyses, the landslide susceptibility map produced by the fuzzy gamma operator with a level of 0.975 showed the best performance. In addition, the maps produced by the logistic regression, fuzzy algebraic product and the higher levels of gamma operators showed more satisfactory results, while the fuzzy and, or, algebraic sum maps were not sufficient to provide reliable outputs. This paper presents the results of geographical information system (GIS)-based landslide susceptibility mapping in Ayvalık, western Turkey using multi-criteria decision analysis. The methodology followed in the study includes data production, standardization, and analysis stages. A landslide inventory of the study area was compiled from aerial photographs, satellite image interpretations, and detailed field surveys. In total, 45 landslides were recorded and mapped. The areal extent of the landslides is 1.75 km2. The identified landslides are mostly shallow-seated, and generally exhibit progressive character. They are mainly classified as rotational, planar, and toppling failures. In all, 51, 45, and 4% of the landslides mapped are rotational, planar, and toppling types, respectively. Morphological, geological, and land-use data were produced using existing topographical and relevant thematic maps in a GIS framework. The considered landslide-conditioning parameters were slope gradient, slope aspect, lithology, weathering state of the rocks, stream power index, topographical wetness index, distance from drainage, lineament density, and land-cover and vegetation density. These landslide parameters were standardized in a common data scale by fuzzy membership functions. Then, the degree to which each parameter contributed to landslides was determined using the analytical hierarchy process method, and the weight values of these parameters were calculated. The weight values obtained were assigned to the corresponding parameters, and then the weighted parameters were combined to produce a landslide susceptibility map. The results obtained from the susceptibility map were evaluated with the landslide location data to assess the reliability of the map. Based on the findings obtained in this study, it was found that 5.19% of the total area was prone to landsliding due to the existence of highly and completely weathered lithologic units and due to the adverse effects of topography and improper land use. The role of geoenvironmental information is becoming increasingly important as legislative changes have forced developers and planning authorities to consider more implications and impact on the environment of large-scale development initiatives. Therefore, integration of surface and subsurface geoscientific information for development needs has prime importance and provides a means of identifying potential problems and opportunities at an early stage in any planned development. However, from the experience of recent natural disasters, it is evident that this was not case the taken into consideration in many countries. In addition to thousands of casualties, many urbanized areas, industrial districts and large-scale engineering structures suffered severe damages from the natural hazards due to many reasons including the lack of preliminary engineering geological maps and zoning maps of the settlement areas. Turkey is one of the countries which is exposed to natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides and floods. In particular, the devastating 1999 Kocaeli earthquake, which affected the Marmara Region of Turkey, focused the attention on densely urbanized and industrialized metropolitan areas such as Istanbul. The rapid growth of Istanbul, particularly towards west with minimal geoscientific information resulted in an overwhelming pressure on the natural environment. In addition, a large earthquake, which is expected to occur in the Marmara Sea within the next 30 years, also pose a threat to the city and its surroundings. In this study, on the basis of the geological, geomorphological and geophysical reconnaissance study, an integrated geoscientific data were collected from the western region of Istanbul and evaluated for geohazards. The paper focuses on the geological and geomorphological aspects that control the occurrence of some geohazards such as earthquake-induced liquefaction, landslides and flooding. In this context, the geological map of the region was revised and Quaternary deposits were classified into 11 units, in detail. Liquefaction-prone areas were evaluated by using geomorphological criteria based on field investigation, by the examination of the available records from 88 boreholes drilled on recent deposits and by the data from resistivity profiles. The landslides within the region were classified according to their type, relative depth and activity. In addition, fluvial and marine flood-prone areas were also delimited within the region. Finally, a series of maps such as landslide inventory maps, and maps showing liquefaction- and flood-prone areas were produced with the aid of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to assist in designing further detailed site investigations and to reduce costs by ensuring a more focused approach to strategic planning and site selection. Babadag, in the Denizli province of Turkey, is one of the oldest textile industry settlements. The town has suffered from a very slow slope movement for about 60 years. One-third of the population lives in the unstable area. The slope movement resulted in significant ground deformations and damage to buildings, roads and buried utilities, and negatively affects socioeconomic life in the town. This paper contributes to the understanding of the long-term plane shear slope movement at the town, analyzes the main causes of the movement, and describes the slope instability and its effects. Movement occurs at an annual rate of between 3.8 cm and 15 cm along weak bedding planes in the alternating marl and sandstone beds forming the slope. Engineering geological assessments based on movement, groundwater and rainfall monitoring data, laboratory testing, and stability analyses indicate the following main factors contributing to the movement: (a) the unfavorable orientations and low shear strength of the bedding planes, (b) variations in the groundwater table related to precipitation and waste water seeping from the damaged sewage system, and (c) undercutting at the toe of the slope by a creek. Particularly due to fluctuations in the groundwater table or variations in pore pressures, the slope movement exhibits increasing and decreasing rates of movement without catastrophic failure. Some slope instability problems exist in Ankara clay along E90 highway. The purpose of this paper is to determine the mineralogical and geotechnical properties of soils, and to investigate the causes and mechanisms of three rotational landslides along a section of the highway. In order to accomplish these tasks, field studies, laboratory testing, back analyses, and limit equilibrium and finite difference analyses were performed. The landslides are formed within a soil consisting of clay and silt with a little sand and gravel. Slope stability analyses indicate that long-term stability of already failed slopes is critical. The failures are progressive, showing strain softening behavior with full saturation. Broken irrigation pipes existing near the landslides are found to be the main cause of sliding. Maintenance of the pipes, surface drainage, removal and replacement of the failed (slided) material are considered to be economical and practical solutions for the remediation of the slides. Recently, numerous landslides occurred in the northern part of Koyulhisar. In 1998 and 2000, which were very wet years, landslides in different masses affected the geological formations which are well known for being prone to slope movements. Detailed geological, geomorphological and geotechnical surveys were carried out, and stability conditions in Koyulhisar village, located NE of Sivas (Turkey), are discussed in this paper. Kinematical analyses showed that the potential slope instabilities are in two main directions: the first direction is SE and the second is SW, these directions corresponding to the dominant slope directions of the study area. Geomechanic surveys confirmed that most of the rock slopes analysed are highly prone to instability. The SMR criterion gave results which correspond well with real stability conditions. Jointing and faulting, steep topography, water incisions, and heavy rainfall played a significant role in the occurrence of the landslides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Based on morphobathymetric and seismic reflection data, we studied a large landslide body from the eastern Sea of Marmara (NW Turkey), along the main strand of the North Anatolian Fault, one of the most seismically active geological structures on Earth. Due to its location and dimensions, the sliding body may cause tsunamis in case of failure possibly induced by an earthquake. This could affect heavily the coasts of the Sea of Marmara and the densely populated Istanbul Metropolitan area, with its exposed cultural heritage assets. After a geological and geometrical description of the landslide, thanks to high-resolution marine geophysical data, we simulated numerically possible effects of its massive mobilization along a basal displacement surface. Results, within significant uncertainties linked to dimensions and kinematics of the sliding mass, suggest generation of tsunamis exceeding 15–20 m along a broad coastal sector of the eastern Sea of Marmara. Although creeping processes or partial collapse of the landslide body could lower the associated tsunami risk, its detection stresses the need for collecting more marine geological/geophysical data in the region to better constrain hazards and feasibility of specific emergency plans. Koyulhisar located in a slope of hilly region and constructed in the side of a mountain along the North Anatolian Fault Zone is frequently subject to landslides. A catastrophic landslide occurred on the morning of 17 March 2005 in the North of the Kuzulu district of Koyulhisar (Sivas, Turkey). This landslide caused widespread loss of life, and damage to buildings, and lifelines. Fifteen people were dead and five were injured, 21 houses and a minaret were covered and damaged severely. The case study presented in this paper describes and analyses the results of the detailed surveys of an interesting landslide in Kuzulu district of Koyulhisar (Sivas, Turkey), based on field and laboratory measurements and monitoring of the slide area. Landslide initiated as a collapse, and developed into debris avalanches in the valley. This phenomenon caused a disaster in the Kuzulu district. The importance of this landslide in particular has been recognized both in terms of its consequence for the people and structures and in terms of its role in allowing an understanding of process and properties of landslide triggered by a collapse in limestone karst. Landslides occur when masses of rock, earth, and other debris move down a slope. The slope of an area is directly responsible for the magnitude of the landslide. Being able to identify regional locations more likely to be impacted by landslides is essential if interventions to prevent loss of life and liberty are to be implemented. To further this objective, studies have been carried out using deep learning methods to assess the likelihood of landslides in a localized area. This study seeks to illuminate the reliability in using the deep learning method to effectively detect landslide zones for the purpose of enacting proactive interventions. Pre-trained models of Resnet-50, VGG-19, Inception-V3, and Xception, all of which are established deep learning approaches, were used to automatically detect regional landslides and then compare results. In addition, Grad-CAM, Grad-CAM + + , and Score-CAM visualization techniques were considered depending on the deep learning methods used to accurately predict the location of landslides. The present research focuses on the landslides that took place in the Gündoğdu area of Rize, a city on the Black Sea cost of Turkey, from August 26 to 27, 2010, where unfortunately a significant number of individuals lost their lives. As a large number of landslide scene images are needed in order to facilitate a learning model's deep learning, images from the area were obtained by aircraft and then organized as a dataset. Non-landslide scenes were added as a separate class in the training dataset to estimate the landslide regions more accurately. In total, 80% of the data will be used for training the model, while 20% will be used for testing the model that is built out of it. The experimental results were evaluated with the receiver operating curves and f1-score applicable to landslide detection characteristics. Obtained results show that both Resnet-50 and VGG-19 had a success rate of over 90%. A number of new winter sports facilities were constructed in the city of Erzurum for 2011 FISU—Universiade Winter Games, some of which constituted the first examples in Turkey. One of those is the ski-jumping complex, which hosts 5 runways along with a cluster of structures in various sizes and annexes, complementing the runways. On the northern slope of Kiremitlik Hill, where the complex is situated, a landslide occurred on 15th July of 2014, leading into complete collapse of the runways and major damage to the entire facility. This study presents a technical summary and forensic analysis of the formation of this natural hazard to illuminate the causes that cumulatively led to this engineering failure that created a massive material loss. In this work, we investigate the issue from geological, geophysical and geotechnical perspectives to illuminate the true causes of this engineering failure. We also hope that this technical evaluation provides an example for engineers as well as public administrators not to overlook the critical ground conditions and well-established design principles of civil engineering. Uzungöl settlement and Lake Uzungöl are located in the south of Çaykara, Trabzon, Eastern Black Sea region, and are an important tourist destination in Turkey, with natural beauty and rich flora. However, the settlement and the lake were formed by a historical landslide that covered the front of the Haldizen stream. Residential buildings, tourist facilities, transportation routes, and agricultural activities are located on ground that consists of the material that accumulated from the landslide. In this study, a geophysical investigation using integrated shallow seismic methods was carried out in Uzungöl settlement to provide detailed scientific imaging data on the structure of the subsurface, the physical properties of the soil and rock, the bedrock topography, and the vertical and lateral variation in the landslide deposits. For this purpose, seismic refraction and active and passive multichannel surface wave data were collected from 16 profiles in four separate zones designated according to the agricultural activity and geomorphology of the area. In addition, an electrical resistivity tomography survey of a profile was carried out to determine the reason for low-velocity anomalies such as cavities or man-made voids appearing in P-wave velocity–depth sections and underground water content. After applying basic processes including trace killing/editing, random noise filtering of the data, and amplitude balancing to all seismic data, 2D P-wave velocity–depth sections obtained by tomographic inversion, 1D S-wave velocity–depth profiles, and 2D S-wave velocity–depth sections were generated via analysis of MASW and ReMi data. P- and S-wave velocity–depth sections generally demonstrate three main lithological units in the area: the soil (Vp = 300–600 m/s, Vs = 195–350 m/s and H = 0–2.5 m), the landslide material (Vp = 600–2400 m/s, Vs = 350–680 m/s and H = 2.5–15 m), and the bedrock (Vp > 2400 m/s, Vs > 680 m/s and H ≥ 15 m). In particular, the landslide material exhibits variable thickness from profile to profile and represents the complexity of the subsurface. However, we observed that the deposit thickness increases close to the lake. It was determined that the high seismic velocities of the landslide deposits are attributable to the densely packed deposits and the primarily dry or very poor underground water, according to electrical resistivity tomography results. Moreover, the top of the bedrock is characterized by soft rock, and the deeper part of the bedrock is harder and more compact. Owing to the increase in population, transportation has become one of the major research topics. Among existing transportation systems, railway is one of the most economic and fast systems, and therefore, there has been an increase in new railway constructions in recent years. In Turkey, the longest railway tunnels, the Bahce–Nurdag high-speed rail tunnels, are under construction in the southern part of the country. This twin tubes tunnels are approximately 10 km in length, and they are excavated using tunnel boring machines (TBM). The tunnel route locates in the East Anatolian Fault Zone and the portal region is composed of debris and old landslide deposits. For this reason, mitigating the potential landslide hazard is critical for the tunnel. Therefore, the present study investigates the TBM tunnelling–landslide relationship by employing 3D numerical analyses. The analyses show that the last 600 m of the tunnel has a potential landslide hazard and some additional measures should be considered along this part to ensure tunnel safety. This study was carried out for determining the type, and factors of mass movements occurred in Upper Eocene-Lower Miocene mudstone and sandstone alternation (with varying ratios) of the Elmalı Formation. Those sediments crop out in a vast area in SW Turkey. The main mass movement type is determined as an earthflow understanding of tilting trees, electric pole and bumpy topography. Locally, complex mass wasting including rotational landslide with various sizes, creep, earthflow and translational movement were also determined during the field study. They are threatening people's life and property. Slope inclination, bed attitudes, joint measurement, hydrogeological observations, in situ strength measurements, geophysical application and rock sampling were performed during the field analysis. In addition, petrographic investigations, XRF and XRD analyses were performed for determining the contents of sample. Basic physico-mechanical properties, including specific gravity, porosity, Atterberg limits of samples were determined in the laboratory. Tectonic history was responsible from sheared, overturned, faulted and fractured lithology. The chaotic mudstone behaves like soil mass on hard-durable sandstone beds. Mid to high inclined slope promote the earthflow. In addition, the surface and ground water increase unstable mass weight and act as a lubricant on durable sandstone, which promote earthflow. The toe of the slope eroded and removed by streams. Thus, the earthflow continues on slope. In this study, it was aimed at evaluating the slope stability conditions in a residential area exposed to two landslides in the past by using two- and three-dimensional limit equilibrium analyses. Two separate, but interdependent, landslides were observed in the investigated area. In 1992 and 1994, two landslides occurred in the region after heavy precipitation and caused damages on the houses and infrastructures. An extensive field work was performed to obtain input parameters for the analyses. In addition, an unmanned aerial vehicle was flown to obtain a three-dimensional view of the landslide area for better understanding of the past failures. The landslides occurred in a flysch-type material representing complex geological characteristics. Hoek–Brown failure criterion and Geological Strength Index were chosen for the strength and visual definition of the geological unit. Since the landslide triggering factor was precipitation, the analyses were focused on the water conditions causing the failure. Sensitivity and back-analyses were performed to obtain the conditions of failure. It was revealed that a high pore pressure ratio was needed to trigger the landslides. However, the second landslide was failed with a lower pore water pressure and the current topography was determined to be on the edge of failure with a slight increase in the pore pressure ratio. Landslide database construction is one of the most crucial stages of the landslide susceptibility mapping studies. Although there are many techniques for preparing landslide database in the literature, representative data selection from huge data sets is a challenging, and, to some extent, a subjective task. Thus, in order to produce reliable landslide susceptibility maps, data-driven, objective and representative database construction is a very important stage for these maps. This study mainly focuses on a landslide database construction task. In this study, it was aimed at building a representative landslide database extraction approach by using Chebyshev theorem to evaluate landslide susceptibility in a landslide prone area in the Western Black Sea region of Turkey. The study area was divided into two different parts such as training (Basin 1) and testing areas (Basin 2). A total of nine parameters such as topographical elevation, slope, aspect, planar and profile curvatures, stream power index, distance to drainage, normalized difference vegetation index and topographical wetness index were used in the study. Next, frequency distributions of the considered parameters in both landslide and nonlandslide areas were extracted using different sampling strategies, and a total of nine different landslide databases were obtained. Of these, eight databases were gathered by the methodology proposed by this study based on different standard deviations and algebraic multiplication of raster parameter maps. To evaluate landslide susceptibility, Artificial Neural Network method was used in the study area considering the different landslide and nonlandslide data. Finally, to assess the performances of the so-produced landslide susceptibility maps based on nine data sets, Area Under Curve (AUC) approach was implemented both in Basin 1 and Basin 2. The best performances (the greatest AUC values) were gathered by the landslide susceptibility map produced by two standard deviation database extracted by the Chebyshev theorem, as 0.873 and 0.761, respectively. In the literature, different sampling strategies (such as landslide area, seed cell, scarp, point) have been applied to landslide susceptibility mapping studies. Landslide sampling strategy should reflect the pre-failure conditions of failures. Hence, researchers tried to develop sampling methods to provide pre-failure conditions. The main purpose of this study was to modify the seed cell sampling strategy for landslide susceptibility evaluations. Furthermore, landslide susceptibility maps were produced using two different sampling strategies (seed cell and landslide area), and compared in terms of their results. In accordance with these purposes, the eastern part of the Gallipoli Peninsula (Canakkale, Turkey) was selected as the study area in which to apply these two sampling strategies. For the seed cell sampling strategy, different random samplings were prepared by considering different buffer distances and different spatial resolutions. Sensitivity analyses were carried out using the landslide area (with depletion and accumulation zones) and samples and seed cells were acquired from different buffer zones with respect to different resolutions. The spatial performance of the landslide susceptibility maps of both sampling strategies were evaluated using area under the ROC curve (AUC) values. The resulting AUC results obtained from different random samplings and different spatial resolutions indicated that the appropriate buffer distance used to produce seed cells for the evaluation of landslide susceptibility maps in medium scale should be approximately 50 m. The aim of this study is to analyze the spatial and temporal behavior of the landslide located in Avcilar region which is situated between Kucukcekmece and Buyukcekmece Lakes in the north-west of Marmara region, Turkey. A network consisting of 10 sites has been surveyed four times from November 2007 to May 2009 using Global Positioning System (GPS). The deformation analysis has been applied to determine the landslide movement parameters of the sites using GPS measurements of the four epochs. The reliable and high precision deformation rates are presented in terms of displacement vectors, velocity vectors and changes of accumulated strain. Landslides of the region are characterized from a regional GPS network. The North Anatolian Fault is known as one of the most active and destructive fault zones which produced many earthquakes with high magnitudes both in historical and instrumental periods. Along this fault zone, the morphology and the lithological features are prone to landslides. Kuzulu landslide, which is located near the North Anatolian Fault Zone, was triggered by snow melting without any precursor, occurred on March 17, 2005. The landslide resulted in 15 deaths and the destruction of about 30 houses at Kuzulu village. There is still a great danger of further landslides in the region. Therefore, it is vitally important to present its environmental impacts and prepare a landslide susceptibility map of the region. In this study, we used likelihood-frequency ratio model and analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to produce landslide susceptibility maps. For this purpose, a detailed landslide inventory map was prepared and the factors chosen that influence landslide occurrence were: lithology, slope gradient, slope aspect, topographical elevation, distance to stream, distance to roads, distance to faults, drainage density and fault density. The ArcGIS package was used to evaluate and analyze all the collected data. At the end of the susceptibility assessment, the area was divided into five susceptibility regions, such as very low, low, moderate, high and very high. The results of the analyses were then verified using the landslide location data and compared with the probability model. For this purpose, an area under curvature (AUC) and the seed cell area index assessments were applied. An AUC value for the likelihood-frequency ratio-based model 0.78 was obtained, whereas the AUC value for the AHP-based model was 0.64. The landslide susceptibility map will help decision makers in site selection and the site-planning process. In this study, landslide risk assessment for Izmir city (west Turkey) was carried out, and the environmental effects of landslides on further urban development were evaluated using geographical information systems and remote sensing techniques. For this purpose, two different data groups, namely conditioning and triggering data, were produced. With the help of conditioning data such as lithology, slope gradient, slope aspect, distance from roads, distance from faults and distance from drainage lines, a landslide susceptibility model was constructed by using logistic regression modelling approach. The accuracy assessment of the susceptibility map was carried out by the area under curvature (AUC) approach, and a 0.810 AUC value was obtained. This value shows that the map obtained is successful. Due to the fact that the study area is located in an active seismic region, earthquake data were considered as primary triggering factor contributing to landslide occurrence. In addition to this, precipitation data were also taken into account as a secondary triggering factor. Considering the susceptibility data and triggering factors, a landslide hazard index was obtained. Furthermore, using the Aster data, a land-cover map was produced with an overall kappa value of 0.94. From this map, settlement areas were extracted, and these extracted data were assessed as elements at risk in the study area. Next, a vulnerability index was created by using these data. Finally, the hazard index and the vulnerability index were combined, and a landslide risk map for Izmir city was obtained. Based on this final risk map, it was observed that especially south and north parts of the Izmir Bay, where urbanization is dense, are threatened to future landsliding. The northeast part of Turkey is prone to landslides because of the climatic conditions, as well as geologic and geomorphologic characteristics of the region. Especially, frequent landslides in the Rize province often result in significant damage to people and property. Therefore, in order to mitigate the damage from landslides and help the planners in selecting suitable locations for implementing development projects, especially in large areas, it is necessary to scientifically assess susceptible areas. In this study, the frequency ratio method and the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) were used to produce susceptibility maps. Especially, AHP gives best results because of allowing better structuring of various components, including both objective and subjective aspects and comparing them by a logical and thorough method, which involves a matrix-based pairwise comparison of the contribution of different factors for landslide. For this purpose, lithology, slope angle, slope aspect, land cover, distance to stream, drainage density, and distance to road were considered as landslide causal factors for the study area. The processing of multi-geodata sets was carried out in a raster GIS environment. Lithology was derived from the geological database and additional field studies; slope angle, slope aspect, distance to stream, distance to road and drainage density were invented from digital elevation models; land cover was produced from remote sensing imagery. In the end of study, the results of the analysis were verified using actual landslide location data. The main purpose of this study is to compare the use of logistic regression, multi-criteria decision analysis, and a likelihood ratio model to map landslide susceptibility in and around the city of İzmir in western Turkey. Parameters, such as lithology, slope gradient, slope aspect, faults, drainage lines, and roads, were considered. Landslide susceptibility maps were produced using each of the three methods and then compared and validated. Before the modeling and validation, the observed landslides were separated into two groups. The first group was for training, and the other group was for validation steps. The accuracy of models was measured by fitting them to a validation set of observed landslides. For validation process, the area under curvature (AUC) approach was applied. According to the AUC values of 0.810, 0.764, and 0.710 for logistic regression, likelihood ratio, and multi-criteria decision analysis, respectively, logistic regression was determined to be the most accurate method among the other used landslide susceptibility mapping methods. This case study presented herein compares the GIS-based landslide susceptibility mapping methods such as conditional probability (CP), logistic regression (LR), artificial neural networks (ANNs) and support vector machine (SVM) applied in Koyulhisar (Sivas, Turkey). Digital elevation model was first constructed using GIS software. Landslide-related factors such as geology, faults, drainage system, topographical elevation, slope angle, slope aspect, topographic wetness index, stream power index, normalized difference vegetation index, distance from settlements and roads were used in the landslide susceptibility analyses. In the last stage of the analyses, landslide susceptibility maps were produced from ANN, CP, LR, SVM models, and they were then compared by means of their validations. However, area under curve values obtained from all four methodologies showed that the map obtained from ANN model looks like more accurate than the other models, accuracies of all models can be evaluated relatively similar. The results also showed that the CP is a simple method in landslide susceptibility mapping and highly compatible with GIS operating features. Susceptibility maps can be easily produced using CP, because input process, calculation and output processes are very simple in CP model when compared with the other methods considered in this study. The nature and subsurface structure of the slip surface of a landslide was studied on the basis of geochemical analyses and 2-D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey. Head scarp and lateral slip surfaces of the landslide marked by clear slickensided shear planes were composed of the average amounts of clayey silt (32.5%) and sand (67.5%). Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) data revealed the enrichment of Si (23.24%), Fe (12.2%), Al (9.51%) and C (8.34%) in the elemental composition of the disturbed slip surface. From X-ray diffractometry (XRD) data, six main clay types were determined, such as Volkonskoite, Halloysite, Ferrosilite, Saponite, Illite and Nontronite. On 19 February 2007, a landslide occurred on the Alaardiç Slope, located 1.6 km south of the town of Yaka (Gelendost, Turkey.) Subsequently, the displaced materials transformed into a mud flow in E¿lence Creek and continued 750 m downstream towards the town of Yaka. The mass poised for motion in the Yaka Landslide source area and its vicinity, which would be triggered to a kinetic state by trigger factors such as heavy or sustained rainfall and/or snowmelt, poise a danger in the form of loss of life and property to Yaka with its population of 3,000. This study was undertaken to construct a susceptibility mapping of the vicinity of the Yaka Landslide¿s source area and to relate it to movement of the landslide mass with the goal of prevention or mitigation of loss of life and property. The landslide susceptibility map was formulated by designating the relationship of the effecting factors that cause landslides such as lithology, gradient, slope aspect, elevation, topographical moisture index, and stream power index to the landslide map, as determined by analysis of the terrain, through the implementation of the conditional probability method. It was determined that the surface area of the Goksogut formation, which has attained lithological characteristics of clayey limestone with a broken and separated base and where area landslides occur, possesses an elevation of 1,100¿1,300 m, a slope gradient of 15°¿35° and a slope aspect between 0°¿67.5° and 157°¿247°. Loss of life and property may be avoided by the construction of structures to check the debris mass in E¿lence Creek, the cleaning of the canal which passes through Yaka, the broadening of the canal¿s base area, elevating the protective edges along the canal and the establishment of a protective zone at least 10-m wide on each side of the canal to deter against damage from probable landslide... The Zonguldak province is a coastal settlement area that has been suffering from serious natural and human-induced environmental problems sourced by its geology and geomorphology. Since the province locates at the heart of a coal-producing basin, the geo-environmental problems related to mining activities such as esthetic degradation, disposal of mining wastes and subsidence of the abandoned coal galleries are badly affecting every day life in Zonguldak province. Disposal of municipal wastes is also a big problem since only one municipality out of 32 has a sanitary disposal area. The rest of the municipalities dispose their solid wastes to rivers or to the sea. The province has also some health problems, which are pointed out in the literature, related to coal mining and geologic environment. These are cytogenetic damage in peripheral lymphocytes and pheumoconiosis (most commonly seen at coal workers), goiter and cancer. Landslides are the most important hazards in the area since 13% of the total surface of the Zonguldak is affected by landslides. In this study, considering the hazard potential special attention is given to deep landslides and using the stepwise forward conditional logistic regression technique, the landslide susceptibility map for the Zonguldak province is produced. The results showed that the most important independent variables governing the landslides are slope gradient, volcanic, and sedimentary rocks of Eocene and clastic and carbonate units of Cretaceous. The landslide map is used as a base map for the production of geo-hazard reconnaissance map on which areas subjected to other important geo-hazards (flood, earthquake and subsidence) are also shown to provide guidance for both existing settlement areas to take the necessary preventive measures and for new developing settlement areas to avoid the problematic areas. Kat County, which is located in a slope of hilly region and constructed in the side of a mountain along the North Anatolian Fault Zone, is frequently subject to landslides. The slides occur during periods of heavy rainfall, and these events cause destruction to property, roads, agricultural lands and buildings. In the last few decades, a lot of houses and buildings have been damaged and destroyed. Settlement areas have remained evacuated for a long time. The slope instabilities in the study area are a complex landslide extending from north to south containing a lot of landslides. Field investigations, interpretation of aerial photography, analyses of geological data and laboratory tests suggest that some factors have acted together on the slopes to cause the sliding. In the wet season, the slopes became saturated. As the saturation of the earth material on the slope causesa rise in water pressure, the shear strength (resisting forces) decreases and the weight (driving forces) increases; thus, the net effect was to lower the safety factor. Previous failures have affected the rock mass, leading to the presence of already sheared surfaces at residual strengths. The relation between the joint planes and the instability of the slope in the study area was discussed and it was found that the potential slope instabilities are mainly in the directions of NW–SE, NE–SW and N–S. The landslide susceptibility map obtained by using the geographical information system showed that a large area is susceptible and prone to landslides in the northern part of the study area. Electrical resistivity imaging is a widely used tool in near surface geophysical surveys for investigation of various geological, environmental and engineering problems including landslide. In this study, an electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) survey was conducted in a landslide area, located in the Söke district of Aydın, Turkey. In 2003, the Neogene-aged units on the slope next to a newly built school building became unstable due to an excavation work and moved after a heavy rainfall. The resulting landslide partly covered the school. The authors carried out a 2-D resistivity survey along three profiles over the landslide mass using a Wenner configuration. It yielded useful information about the geometry and characteristics of the landslide. In addition, a 2-D synthetic resistivity modelling study was carried out to understand the response of the resistivity method to a landslide problem before the field surveys. Eight boreholes were also drilled in the landslide area. Both the drilling and resistivity results indicated the presence of a fault in the site. The study area is located in the south of İzmir city centre in an area built without planning permission or any overall city plan. In this area, a number of mass movements occurred in the past and the region is still an active landslide field at present. The real sliding factor is geological structure, which is made up of hard volcanic rocks overlying soft Neogene clayey soils, and forms a typical structure prone to sliding. Unplanned human activities change the hydrogeological and geotechnical stabilities of the geological formations in a negative way. Rain and water leaking either directly from the mains or septic holes infiltrate into the ground and act as one of the factors in causing landslides. It is clearly shown that the irregular urbanization in and around Kadifekale is one of the factors contributing to the landslides in the area. To prevent the occurrence of landslides in the study area an effective surface and under ground drainage should be established. Rain and wastewater should be removed from the area by separate systems. Slopes should be reduced, water-loving trees should be planted and construction of high rise buildings should be avoided.
