In this study, we utilize both quantitative and qualitative data to examine the effect of dependent applicant status on the occupational mobility of married, professional immigrant men and women arriving in Canada through the skilled worker immigration category. Using longitudinal quantitative data, we find that dependent applicants, regardless of gender, experience a greater drop in occupational status after migration than principal applicants and they are unable to overcome this disadvantage over time. Qualitative interview data highlights the subtle, implicit relationship between dependent applicant status, traditional gender roles, and employment integration. In most cases, the women are designated as the dependent applicant during the immigration process because they have lower levels of the human capital that is valued for Canadian immigration than their husbands. Our findings suggest that within newly immigrated families, principal applicants are better able to reestablish their careers, while dependent applicants, disproportionately women, face more employment disadvantage, regardless of their professional background. Using the Longitudinal Survey of Immigrants in Canada (LSIC), this study examines the role of social capital in the labour market integration of new immigrants in Canada, utilizing various measures of social capital and treating employment and occupational Socio-Economic Scale (SES) as the indicators of labour market integration. The findings show that visible minority immigrants have significantly lower levels of employment and SES compared to white immigrants. Furthermore, social capital contributes significantly to an increased likelihood of employment and also to higher SES positions. The article discusses a Web-based survey that was distributed to residents and fellows by their residency directors in all Canadian emergency medicine (EM) residency programs outside of Quebec. The objective of the survey was the characterization of the perceptions of EM residents and fellows regarding competence, both clinically and procedurally, adverse events, and perceived barriers to reporting adverse events to their supervisors.

A small number of previous studies using convenience samples from outside Canada, and mostly for males, show positive relationships between physical height and holding a position of authority as a manager or supervisor. The present study employs Multiple Classification Analysis to assess the generality of these patterns to a representative sample of full-time Canadian workers (2,210 males and 1,815 females) using seven alternative measures of authority status. The results for male workers, after controls, generally show significant positive relationships between height and authority status. The controlled analyses for female workers, however, do not. Additional analyses for males show height to be a comparatively strong predictor relative to other social background predictors of authority status. This study reanalyses data on migrants to Alberta, collected by Statistics Canada in a 1980 Labour Force Survey. The findings indicate that migrant men are gainers and migrant women, particularly migrant wives are the losers from such movement, even during a period of relative economic prosperity in the Province. Women's occupational status tends to improve with time spent in the new labour force. However there is a failure to return to occupational statuses enjoyed before the move. This means, first, that male and female workers are more sex-differentiated after the move than before it; second, that migrant women, especially wives, enjoy fewer occupational returns on their educational investment than migrant men; third, that the balance of economic contribution, and possibly therefore influence, within a migrant household is shifted towards greater male dominance by the move. It is to be emphasized that each of these findings is to be regarded as tentative pending the completion of further analyses on this and three. related data sets.
