Fluorapatite (FAp) is the largest phosphorous (P) reservoir on Earth. However, due to its low solubility, dissolved P is severely deficient in the pedosphere. Fungi play a significant role in P dissolution via excretion of organic acids, and in this regard, it is important to understand their impact on P cycling. The object of this study was to elucidate the balance between P release and F toxicity during FAp dissolution. The bioweathering of FAp was assisted by a typical phosphate-solubilizing fungus, Aspergillus niger. The release of elements and microbial activities were monitored during 5-day incubation. We found that the release of fluorine (F) was activated after day 1 (~90 mg/L), which significantly lowered the phosphate-solubilizing process by day 2. Despite P release from FAp being enhanced over the following 3 days, decreases in both the amount of biomass (52% decline) and the respiration rate (81% decline) suggest the strong inhibitory effect of F on the fungus. We thus concluded that F toxicity outweighs P supply, which in turn inhibits fungi growth and prevents further dissolution of FAp. Data-driven housing-market segmentation has been given increasing prominence for its objectiveness in identifying submarkets based on the housing data's underlying structures. However, when handling high-dimensionality housing dataset, traditional statistical-clustering methods have been found to tend to lose low-variance information of the dataset and be deficient in deriving the globally optimal number of submarkets. Accordingly, with the intention of achieving more rigorous high-dimensionality housing market segmentation, a swarm-inspired projection (SIP) algorithm is introduced by this study. Using a high-dimensionality Taipei city's housing dataset in a case study, a comparison of the proposed SIP algorithm and a statistical-clustering method using the combination of principal component analysis (PCA) and K-means clustering is conducted in evaluating the predictive accuracy of hedonic price models of the housing submarkets. The results show that, as compared to the original single market, the segmented submarkets resulting from SIP algorithm are more homogenous and distinctive, where the resulted hedonic price models have high-level statistical explanation and disparate sets of hedonic prices for different submarkets. In addition, as compared to the use of a statistical-clustering method, SIP algorithm is found to obtain a more optimal number of submarkets, where the resulted hedonic price models are found to achieve greater improvement of statistical explanation and more stable reduction of prediction error. These findings highlight the advantages of our proposed SIP algorithm in high-dimensionality housing market segmentation, and thus it is hoped that the present research will serve as a practical tool to better inform further studies aimed at market-segmentation-related problems. This study investigated the application of fungus Aspergillus niger and geological fluorapatite (FAp) to cadmium (Cd) immobilization in aqueous solution. The initial Cd concentrations were set at 100, 50, 25, and 10 mg L−1. The mineralogy of the products was investigated by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and attenuated total reflection–infrared spectroscopy (ATR-IR). In both A. niger + FAp + Cd and A. niger + Cd treatments, A. niger secreted abundant oxalic acid, then dissolved the FAp, and reacted with Cd2+ cations to produce relatively insoluble Cd oxalate. Meanwhile, FAp can provide P source to improve microbial growth. The fungal tolerance to Cd2+ was identified at around 100 mg L−1. The final Cd concentrations of 13.7, 3.2, and 0.2 mg L−1 were recorded for A. niger + FAp + Cd treatments with initial Cd concentrations of 50, 25, and 10 mg L−1 respectively. Meanwhile, it was observed that the Cd concentration at 25 mg L−1 stimulated higher bioactivities of A. niger, which further enhanced Cd bioremediation. The immobilization efficiency (%) of the treatments at low to medium Cd concentrations was in the order: Asp + FAp > Asp > FAp, while FAp alone was most efficient at the high Cd concentration of 100 mg L−1. Purpose: Pb contamination in soil is of great environmental concern due to its high exposure to human, especially on surface soil. However, the study regarding effect of Pb leaching on its remediation in different soils is still scanty.Materials and methods: Red soil (RS, acidic), sandy soil (SS, alkaline), and yellow-brown soil (CS, neutral) were collected in this study. Bioapatite (BAp) and fluorapatite (FAp) were applied as P source to remediate Pb contamination. In addition, oxalic acid was added to enhance the solubility of apatite and hence the immobilization of Pb(II). Techniques of ICP, SEM-EDX, and XRD were utilized to investigate the concentration, distribution, and mineralization of Pb.Results and discussion: Addition of BAp, in contrast to FAp, significantly reduced available Pb concentrations in soil. However, the remediation is not successful in the middle and bottom layers. This is correlated with the Pb leaching and relatively low solubility of BAp. The combination of oxalic acid and BAp dramatically reduced available Pb concentrations (80-99%) in all soil layers, primarily due to the enhanced P release from BAp by acid addition. Moreover, difference of available Pb concentrations (between top and bottom layers) in RS was 126 mg/kg, which is significantly higher than those for CS (5 mg/kg) and SS (21 mg/kg). Then, available Pb concentration in RS could be over ten times of that in CS, suggesting that Pb leaching is one of the negative factors influencing effects of remediation. Furthermore, the aggregation of Pb and salt-induced Pb mineralization in SS were confirmed by SEM-EDX and XRD analyses.Conclusions: Rates of Pb leaching follow the order of RS > SS > CS. The effects of remediation on Pb availability can be reduced by Pb leaching, especially in RS. The effect of remediation in SS is also limited due to its alkalinity and salt coupling effect. In consequence, CS is the most suitable soil type for remediation via combination of BAp and oxalic acid. This study elucidates the critical leaching effects of Pb on remediation of surface soil. Phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) can secrete large amounts of organic acids. In this study, the application of the fungus Penicillium oxalicum and geological fluorapatite (FAp) to lead immobilization was investigated. The formation and morphology of the lead-related minerals were analyzed by ATR-IR, XRD, Raman, and SEM. The quantity of organic acids secreted by P. oxalicum reached the maximum on the fourth day, which elevated soluble P concentrations from 0.4 to 108 mg/L in water. The secreted oxalic acid dominates the acidity in solution. P. oxalicum can survive in the solution with Pb concentration of ~ 1700 mg/L. In addition, it was shown that ~ 98% lead cations were removed while the fungus was cultured with Pb (~ 1700 mg/L) and FAp. The mechanism is that the released P from FAp (enhanced by organic acids) can react with Pb2+ to form the stable pyromorphite mineral [Pb5(PO4)3F]. The precipitation of lead oxalate also contributes to Pb immobilization. However, lead oxalate is more soluble due to its relatively high solubility. P. oxalicum has a higher rate of organic acid secretion compared with other typical PSF, e.g., Aspergillus niger. This study sheds light on bright future of applying P. oxalicum in Pb remediation. In this paper, we treat optimization problems as a kind of reinforcement learning problems regarding an optimization procedure for searching an optimal solution as a reinforcement learning procedure for finding the best policy to maximize the expected rewards. This viewpoint motivated us to propose a Q-learning-based swarm optimization (QSO) algorithm. The proposed QSO algorithm is a population-based optimization algorithm which integrates the essential properties of Q-learning and particle swarm optimization. The optimization procedure of the QSO algorithm proceeds as each individual imitates the behavior of the global best one in the swarm. The best individual is chosen based on its accumulated performance instead of its momentary performance at each evaluation. Two data sets including a set of benchmark functions and a real-world problem-the economic dispatch (ED) problem for power systems-were used to test the performance of the proposed QSO algorithm. The simulation results on the benchmark functions show that the proposed QSO algorithm is comparable to or even outperforms several existing optimization algorithms. The conventional self-organizing feature map (SOM) algorithm is usually interpreted as a computational model, which can capture main features of computational maps in the brain. In this paper, we present a variant of the SOM algorithm called the SOM-based optimization (SOMO) algorithm. The development of the SOMO algorithm was motivated by exploring the possibility of applying the SOM algorithm in continuous optimization problems. Through the self-organizing process, good solutions to an optimization problem can be simultaneously explored and exploited by the SOMO algorithm. In our opinion, the SOMO algorithm not only can be regarded as a biologically inspired computational model but also may be regarded as a new approach to a model of social influence and social learning. In this paper we propose a neural-network-based approach to solving optical symbol recognition problems, from node head recognition to handwritten digit recognition. We demonstrated that node heads could be easily recognized by using a set of fuzzy rules extracted from the parameters of trained neural networks. For handwritten digit recognition we demonstrated that only 12 features are sufficient to achieve a high recognition rate. A new facial image morphing algorithm based on the Kohonen self-organizing feature map (SOM) algorithm is proposed to generate a smooth 2D transformation that reflects anchor point correspondences. To evaluate the changes that occur in the motor and supplementary motor cortices in cases of multiple system atrophy (MSA), we carried out morphological and morphometric studies in 7 cases of MSA and 11 age-matched controls. Neuropathological study revealed presence of glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs) in the cortex and subcortical white matter of the motor and supplementary motor areas, loss of small to medium-sized pyramidal neurons, and astrocytosis in the motor cortex in all cases of MSA, showing a definite predilection in the cortical layers V and VI. The severity of neuronal loss in the motor cortex was highly correlated with the incidence of GCIs and the involvement of the nigrostriatal pathway. Morphometrically, significant reductions of both the thickness of motor cortical layers V and VI and the number of neurons were observed. In addition, a reduction in the number of neurons in the supplementary motor cortex was detected in three out of the seven MSA cases. The results of this study suggest that the motor area is a cardinal target in MSA, and that in association with the nigrostriatal pathway it forms a motor loop degeneration in this disease. This paper presents a novel class of neural networks which can be trained in an unsupervised manner to detect a mixture of hyperellipsoidal shells and/or segments of hyperellipsoidal shells. Recently, neural networks have been applied to many medical diagnostic problems because of their appealing properties, robustness, capability of generalization and fault tolerance. Although the predictive accuracy of neural networks may be higher than that of traditional methods (e.g., statistical methods) or human experts, the lack of explanation from a trained neural network leads to the difficulty that users would hesitate to take the advise of a black box on faith alone. This paper presents a class of composite neural networks which are trained in such a way that the values of the network parameters can be utilized to generate If-Then rules on the basis of preselected meaningful coordinates. Organophosphorus compounds (OP) are stable P source in nature, and can increase eutrophication risk in waterbodies. Lecithin was the most difficult OP to be broken down. In this study, two typical phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms, Aspergillus niger and Acinetobacter sp., were applied to evaluate their ability to decompose both inorganic phosphates and lecithin. A. niger and Acinetobacter sp. could solubilize calcium phosphates by secreting various organic acids, e.g., oxalic and formic acids. The fungus, A. niger, shows significantly higher ability of solubilizing these inorganic phosphates than Acinetobacter sp., primarily due to its secretion of abundant oxalic acid. However, the bacterium, Acinetobacter sp., could secrete more acid phosphatase than A. niger for lecithin decomposition, i.e., 9300 vs. 8500 μmol L−1 h−1. Moreover, after addition of CaCl2, the released P from lecithin was transformed to stable chlorapatite in the medium. To the contrast, Ca cations inclined to form calcium oxalate (rather than stable phosphate mineral) after the incubation of A. niger, as it induced relatively acidic environment after breaking down lecithin. Computed tomography-guided radiofrequency ablation (CT-RFA) and laparoscopic RFA (L-RFA) have been used to treat intrahepatic recurrent small hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) against the diaphragmatic dome. However, the therapeutic safety, efficacy, and hospital fee have never been compared between the two techniques due to scarcity of cases. In this retrospective study, 116 patients were divided into two groups with a total of 151 local recurrent HCC lesions abutting the diaphragm. We compared overall survival (OS), local tumor progression (LTP), postoperative complications, and hospital stay and fee between the two groups. Our findings revealed no significant differences in 5-year OS (36.7% vs. 44.6%, p = 0.4289) or 5-year LTP (73.3% vs. 67.9%, p = 0.8897) between CT-RFA and L-RFA. The overall hospital stay (2.8 days vs. 4.1 days, p < 0.0001) and cost (¥ 19217.6 vs. ¥ 25553.6, p < 0.0001) were significantly lower in the CT-RFA in comparison to that of L-RFA. In addition, we elaborated on the choice of percutaneous puncture paths depending on the locations of the HCC nodules and 11-year experience with CT-RFA. In conclusion, CT-RFA is a relatively easy and economic technique for recurrent small HCC abutting the diaphragm, and both CT-RFA and L-RFA are effective techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
