Aotearoa New Zealand's swamp forests have experienced significant habitat loss in fewer than two hundred years. Many of the country's tree species are endemic with sparse to no genetic information available to underpin conservation strategies. Syzygium maire, Aotearoa's only endemic Syzygium species, is a culturally and ecologically important component of swamp forest habitats. Unfortunately, populations of S. maire have been greatly reduced, heavily fragmented and are susceptible to the emergent pathogen Austropuccinia psidii (myrtle rust), posing eminent danger of a further decline of the species. We sought to develop genomic resources to inform conservation management of S. maire. To this end, we used long read, high accuracy sequencing technology to produce a highly complete reference quality genome for S. maire. The genome sequence was named 'Ngā Hua o te Ia Whenua' by the local Māori tribe where the tree used for genome sequencing grows. We assess whether genome-level divergence with other Myrtaceae may have followed geographic isolation of the species. We detect conservation of large scale synteny between three Syzygium species and Eucalyptus grandis, providing support for the stability of Syzygium genomes across evolutionary time. We annotate genes implicated in fungal pathogen defence, identifying several hundred putative NLR genes, including putative homologs of previously identified Austropuccinia psidii resistance genes. Finally, we evaluate the genetic relationships of individuals of a small, isolated population of trees. We find evidence of high levels of kinship and inbreeding within small and isolated S. maire populations, informing local-scale conservation strategies for the species. Current scouring effects and additives increase the risk of failure in underwater structures, and poor observation complicates the identification and assessment of damage. We present a novel index for assessing non-dispersible underwater concrete columns using stress-wave and impedance. A piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate sensor was used to monitor the compression process of non-dispersible underwater concrete columns and ascertain the extent of damage. The proposed index divides the damage process into initial compaction, elastic deformation, and crack development and failure stages. Background: Turning and milling machines (TMMs) have diverse and complex heat sources, which pose challenges to understanding their thermal behavior and thermal critical regions. Methods: A comprehensive procedure was proposed to explore the thermal characteristics of TMMs and identify thermally critical components. This study employed a Taguchi-FEM approach along with sensitivity analysis to evaluate the significant contributing boundary conditions of TMMs to tool center point (TCP) deformation in the X-, Y-, and Z-directions. An ANOVA-driven search was further proposed to identify thermal key points significantly impacting TCP deformation across directions and time intervals. Integrating both methods facilitated the identification of the TMM thermal critical regions. Results: The spindle TCP's thermal critical regions were most significantly influenced by the spindle component, followed by the milling cutter shaft component and then the right side of the base bed. Similarly, for the sub-spindle TCP, the highest impact came from the sub-spindle components, followed by the right side of the base bed and the milling cutter shaft components. Conclusions: The proposed procedure identified the significant regions for assisting evaluation in TMMs and reduced the number of required temperature monitoring points while optimizing their placements to minimize measurement costs. 2D X-ray images are extensively employed for intraoperative navigation and localization owing to their high imaging efficiency, low radiation risk, and affordability. However, this method can only yield overlapped anatomical information from a restricted number of projected views. Conversely, intraoperative CT scanning techniques, offering 3D images, elevate the risk of radiation exposure for both patients and healthcare professionals. For this purpose, we propose a V-shaped convolutional attention mechanism network (X-CTCANet) designed for X-ray reconstruction of CT images. The network enhances reconstruction performance by promoting task consistency in encoding–decoding, minimizing semantic differences between feature mappings. Additionally, it introduces an adaptive convolutional channel attention mechanism to compel the network to prioritize essential feature regions. Experimental results demonstrate the successful CT image reconstruction from spine X-rays using X-CTCANet, achieving an SSIM value of 0.805 and a PSNR value of 34.64 dB. Whether brain stimulation could modulate brain structure in autism remains unknown. This study explored the impact of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) over the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) on white matter macro/microstructure in intellectually able children and emerging adults with autism. Sixty autistic participants were randomized (30 active) and received active or sham cTBS for eight weeks twice per week, 16 total sessions using a double-blind (participant-, rater-, analyst-blinded) design. All participants received high-angular resolution diffusion MR imaging at baseline and week 8. Twenty-eight participants in the active group and twenty-seven in the sham group with good imaging quality entered the final analysis. With longitudinal fixel-based analysis and network-based statistics, we found no significant difference between the active and sham groups in changes of white matter macro/microstructure and connections following cTBS. In addition, we found no association between baseline white matter macro/microstructure and autistic symptom changes from baseline to week 8 in the active group. In conclusion, we did not find a significant impact of left DLPFC cTBS on white matter macro/microstructure and connections in children and emerging adults with autism. These findings need to be interpreted in the context that the current intellectually able cohort in a single university hospital site limits the generalizability. Future studies are required to investigate if higher stimulation intensities and/or doses, other personal factors, or rTMS parameters might confer significant brain structural changes visible on MRI in ASD. This study aimed to investigate the effects of postmortem chilling times (4 °C: 0, 2, 8, and 12 h) and subsequent frozen storage durations (-20 °C: 0, 1, 2, and 3 months) on the microstructure and protein properties of tilapia fillets. Tilapia fillets with 8 h of chilling (P8) resulted in highest overall acceptability, hardness, chewiness, and shear force. The thawing losses of tilapia fillets with different postmortem chilling times for the same frozen storage duration were ranked as follows: P12 > P0/P2 > P8. With the prolongation of postmortem chilling times and frozen storage periods, the muscle tissue structure was gradually damaged, with the most severe disruption after 12 h of postmortem chilling time. Tilapia fillets pre-chilled for 8 h showed a 17.63% decrease in Ca2+-ATPase activity at 3 months of frozen duration, which was the smallest decrease compared with the other groups. Furthermore, the endogenous fluorescence intensity of P0, P2, P8 and P12 samples decreased by 34.53%, 14.29%, 13.95% and 26.98%, respectively, at the end of frozen storage. Overall, frozen storage durations had a greater effect on the quality of tilapia fillets than postmortem chilling times. In summary, the maximum postmortem chilling time for frozen tilapia fillets is recommended to be 8 h, with significant quality differences when frozen for more than 2 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The iron sword and knife industry was highly developed during the Han dynasties in Chinese history. However, there is not much clarity regarding its presence in the capital. In this paper, we analyzed fragments of seven iron swords and three iron knives excavated in Xi’an city (the capital of Han dynasties) using non-destructive neutron techniques of neutron resonance capture analysis (NRCA) and neutron diffraction (ND) for the first time in China. The results indicate that the hand guards were cast from Cu-Sn-Pb-As alloys, while one knife’s scabbard was made of pure copper. Furthermore, we obtained quantitative results for carbon content, micro-strain and texture effect in different regions of each sword or knife for the first time. This suggests that these iron blades are hypoeutectoid steel, and likely underwent intentional processing such as carburization, decarburizaition and hammering. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the archaeometallurgy related to Han iron swords and knives, which supplements the results obtained from traditional experimental methods. Background: The objective of this study was to explore the frequency of occurrence of extra-renal manifestations associated with monogenic nephrolithiasis. Methods: A literature review was conducted to identify genes that are monogenic causes of nephrolithiasis. The Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) database was used to identify associated diseases and their properties. Disease phenotypes were ascertained using OMIM clinical synopses and sorted into 24 different phenotype categories as classified in OMIM. Disease phenotypes caused by the same gene were merged into a phenotypic profile of a gene (PPG) such that one PPG encompasses all related disease phenotypes for a specific gene. The total number of PPGs involving each phenotype category was measured, and the median phenotype category was determined. Phenotype categories were classified as overrepresented or underrepresented if the number of PPGs involving them was higher or lower than the median, respectively. Chi-square test was conducted to determine whether the number of PPGs affecting a given category significantly deviated from the median. Results: Fifty-five genes were identified as monogenic causes of nephrolithiasis. A total of six significantly overrepresented and three significantly underrepresented phenotype categories were identified (p < 0.05). Four phenotypic categories (growth, neurological, skeletal, and abdomen/gastrointestinal) are significantly overrepresented after Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons (p < 0.002). Among all phenotypes, impaired growth is the most common manifestation. Conclusion: Recognizing the extra-renal manifestations associated with monogenic causes of kidney stones is critical for earlier diagnosis and optimal care in patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Federated learning (FL) is an emerging privacy-preserving distributed computing paradigm, enabling numerous clients to collaboratively train machine learning models without the necessity of transmitting clients' private datasets to the central server. Unlike most existing research where the local datasets of clients are assumed to be unchanged over time throughout the whole FL process, our study addresses such scenarios in this paper where clients' datasets need to be updated periodically, and the server can incentivize clients to employ as fresh as possible datasets for local model training. Our primary objective is to design a client selection strategy to minimize the loss of the global model for FL loss within a constrained budget. To this end, we introduce the concept of "Age of Information" (AoI) to quantitatively assess the freshness of local datasets and conduct a theoretical analysis of the convergence bound in our AoI-aware FL system. Based on the convergence bound, we further formulate our problem as a restless multi-armed bandit (RMAB) problem. Next, we relax the RMAB problem and apply the Lagrangian Dual approach to decouple it into multiple subproblems. Finally, we propose a Whittle's Index Based Client Selection (WICS) algorithm to determine the set of selected clients. In addition, comprehensive simulations substantiate that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce training loss and enhance the learning accuracy compared with some state-of-the-art methods. The Meso-neoproterozoic Bayan Obo rift is located along the northern margin of the North China Craton, and was associated with the break-up of the Columbia supercontinent. During rift evolution, syn-sedimentary deformation occurred due to tectonic activity and earthquakes. Seismic events are recorded in the Jianshan Formation of the Bayan Obo Group, Inner Mongolia, as soft sediment deformation structures in the central Bayan Obo rift. Druse calcite crystals and collapse breccias in the Jianshan Formation may provide information on the rift evolution. The druse calcite crystals are idiomorphic-columnar in shape and associated with graphite, pyrite, and quartz. δ13C values of the graphite are −20‰, indicative of biogenic deoxygenation and formation in water. The druse calcite crystals are inorganic in origin and formed in water at a temperature of 55 °C, based on calcite δ13C and δ18O data. The calcite grew in paleo-caves containing fault breccias, with heat derived from faulting. As such, the druse calcite crystals are important evidence for seismic events. The collapse breccias (i. e., fault breccias) and other indicators of slip show that displacement occurred from NE to SW, which is different from the paleocurrent direction in the Jianshan Formation. The thickness of the collapse breccia is ∼200 m, which represents the height of the fault scarp. The strike of the fault scarp was NE-SW, based on the distribution of the collapse breccia. The Bayan Obo and Yanliao rifts experienced rapid NW-SE extension, and developed similar deformation structures at ca. 1.6 Ga related to break-up of the Columbia supercontinent. The manufacturing and corrosion properties of metal artefacts are significant for archaeologists and conservators. In this study, non-destructive neutron-based techniques are applied on ancient copper-iron arrows. The archaeological samples were excavated from a Western Han tomb (202 BC - AD 8) near the Han Chang'an city site (the capital of Western Han dynasty) in China. This is the first time that the combination of neutron resonance capture analysis, neutron diffraction, neutron tomography, and Raman spectroscopy has been used in Chinese cultural heritage to obtain useful information about the arrows. The results indicate that one arrowhead is made of low-Sn, high-Pb bronze, while the other is composed of high-Sn, low-Pb bronze. These analyses also reveal the production method of these arrows, with the iron tangs likely being cast first and then connected to bronze arrowheads through casting. Furthermore, due to the variations in materials used, certain parts of the arrows were more susceptible to corrosion than others; specifically, those made of pure iron were more prone to corrosion than their bronze counterparts. Additionally, it is confirmed that the iron inside the arrowhead corroded less than the visible iron tang at its base. The corrosion products include cuprite, goethite, hematite, magnetite, cerussite, azurite, malachite and lepidocrocite. The morphological changes in isolated bubbles in gassy silt play a critical role in the microscopic structures between soil particles and bubbles and macroscopic physical properties. Based on X-ray CT scanning experiments under various vertical loads (four levels), self-designed acoustic macro experiments, and a series of formula revisions to the macro-air-bearing silt sound-velocity prediction model, this paper discusses the macro- and micro-scale features of gassy silts from the Yellow River Delta. The samples consisted of different proportions of silt from the Yellow River Delta and porous media, and they were used to form two types of aerosol silts with initial gas contents of 4.23% and 7.67%. The results show that the air bubble content and external load considerably affect the microstructural parameters and acoustic behavior of gassy silt in the Yellow River Delta. The macroscopic sound velocity showed a linear positive correlation with vertical load and relation to microstructural parameters in varying manners and degrees. Based on the traditional Biot-Stoll acoustic model, the gas-phase medium coefficient was introduced for the proper calculation and prediction of the sound velocity of air-bearing silt. Our study aimed to compare bone scintigraphy and dual-layer detector spectral CT (DLCT) with multiphase contrast enhancement for the diagnosis of osteoblastic bone lesions in patients with prostate cancer. The patients with prostate cancer and osteoblastic bone lesions detected on DLCT were divided into positive bone scintigraphy group (pBS) and negative bone scintigraphy group (nBS) based on bone scintigraphy. A total of 106 patients (57 nBS and 49 pBS) was included. The parameters of each lesion were measured from DLCT including Hounsfield unit (HU), 40–140 keV monochromatic HU, effective nuclear numbers (Zeff), and Iodine no water (InW) value in non-contrast phase (N), the arterial phase (A), and venous phase (V). The slope of the spectral curve at 40 and 100 keV, the different values of the parameters between A and N phase (A-N), V and N phase (V-N), and hybrid prediction model with multiparameters were used to differentiate pBS from nBS. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to compare the area under the curve (AUC) for differentiating the pBS group from the nBS group. The value of conventional HU values, slope, and InW in A-N and V-N, and hybrid model were significantly higher in the pBS group than in the nBS group. The hybrid model of all significant parameters had the highest AUC of 0.988, with 95.5% sensitivity and 94.6% specificity. DLCT with arterial contrast enhancement phase has the potential to serve as an opportunistic screening tool for detecting positive osteoblastic bone lesions, corresponding to those identified in bone scintigraphy. The clinical implications of extrachromosomal DNA (ecDNA) in cancer therapy remain largely elusive. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of ecDNA amplification spectra and their association with clinical and molecular features in multiple cohorts comprising over 13,000 pan-cancer patients. Using our developed computational framework, GCAP, and validating it with multifaceted approaches, we reveal a consistent pan-cancer pattern of mutual exclusivity between ecDNA amplification and microsatellite instability (MSI). In addition, we establish the role of ecDNA amplification as a risk factor and refine genomic subtypes in a cohort from 1015 colorectal cancer patients. Importantly, our investigation incorporates data from four clinical trials focused on anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, demonstrating the pivotal role of ecDNA amplification as a biomarker for guiding checkpoint blockade immunotherapy in gastrointestinal cancer. This finding represents clinical evidence linking ecDNA amplification to the effectiveness of immunotherapeutic interventions. Overall, our study provides a proof-of-concept of identifying ecDNA amplification from cancer whole-exome sequencing (WES) data, highlighting the potential of ecDNA amplification as a valuable biomarker for facilitating personalized cancer treatment. The microscopic characterization of isolated bubbles in gassy soil plays an important role in the macroscopic physical properties of sediments and is a key factor in the study of geological hazards in gas-bearing strata. Based on the box-counting method and the pore fractal features in porous media, a fractal model of bubble microstructure parameters in gassy soil under different gas contents and vertical load conditions is established by using an industrial X-ray CT scanning system. The results show that the fractal dimension of bubbles in the sample is correlated with the volume fraction of bubbles, and it is also restricted by the vertical load. The three-dimensional fractal dimension of the sample is about 1 larger than the average two-dimensional fractal dimension of all the slices from the same sample. The uniform porous media fractal model is used to test the equivalent diameter, and the results show that the variation of the measured pore diameter ratio is jointly restricted by the volume fraction and the vertical load. In addition, the measured self-similarity interval of the bubble area distribution is tested by the porous media fractal capillary bundle model, and the fitting curve of measured pore area ratio in a small loading range is obtained in this paper. Ancient pottery, having endured prolonged burial in soil, invariably underwent the process of glaze corrosion. The micromorphology and structural composition of four lead-glazed pottery fragments dating back to the Han Dynasty, excavated in the Qinhan New Town within Xixian New area of Xi'an are elucidated by comprehensive analysis method. The results reveal that the corrosion products predominantly comprised PbCO3, Pb3(PO4)2, CaCO3, and Ca3(PO4)2. Concurrently, the presence of organic substances exhibiting characteristic self-excitation fluorescence in the cracks of the sample is identified through fluorescence microscopy and Fourier infrared spectroscopy. Through a comparative analysis of well-preserved and severely corroded samples, taking into account compositional analysis, observations of corrosion morphology, and the characteristics of corrosion products, it is deduced that the primary corrosion mechanisms involve chemical corrosion, microbial corrosion, and crack corrosion. The non-stationarity of identifying hydrological extreme sequences is essential for understanding the patterns of hydrological systems and conducting reasonable risk assessments. Currently, research on detecting non-stationarity primarily determines whether the parameters of the sequence change through statistical tests. The study introduces the concept of distribution change to detect non-stationarity and proposes the Cumulative Distribution function Change Indicator (CDCI) to quantify the degree of non-stationarity in extreme sequences. Based on Hourly Precipitation Data from 102 U.S. Weather Stations, 1975–2021. Comparison with other methods commonly used for non-stationarity identification validates the reasonableness of CDCI. Additionally, it explores the relationship between non-stationarity, distribution, and return period based on CDCI. The research results demonstrate that: (1) Distribution change can reflect the non-stationarity of sequences, and CDCI is more sensitive compared to conventional non-stationarity identification methods; (2) By combining CDCI with return period change, the response of distribution to non-stationarity can be identified, including the location and degree of distributional change. The study demonstrates the feasibility and validity of distributional change being used as a measure of non-stationarity in hydrological extreme sequences. Purpose This study seeks to build a normative database for the vessel density of the superficial retina (SVD) and evaluate how changes and trends in the retinal microvasculature may be influenced by age and axial length (AL) in non-glaucomatous eyes, as measured with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Methods We included 500 eyes of 290 healthy subjects visiting a county hospital. Each participant underwent comprehensive ophthalmological examinations and OCTA to measure the SVD and thickness of the macular and peripapillary areas. To analyze correlations between SVD and age or AL, multivariable linear regression models with generalized estimating equations were applied. Results Age was negatively correlated with the SVD of the superior, central, and inferior macular areas and the superior peripapillary area, with a decrease rate of 1.06%, 1.36%, 0.84%, and 0.66% per decade, respectively. However, inferior peripapillary SVD showed no significant correlation with age. AL was negatively correlated with the SVD of the inferior macular area and the superior and inferior peripapillary areas, with coefficients of -0.522%/mm, -0.733%/mm, and -0.664%/mm, respectively. AL was also negatively correlated with the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer and inferior ganglion cell complex (p = 0.004). Conclusion Age and AL were the two main factors affecting changes in SVD. Furthermore, AL, a relative term to represent the degree of myopia, had a greater effect than age and showed a more significant effect on thickness than on SVD. As an essential part of geocoding, address matching has gained increasing research attention. Due to the long-distance dependency and unstructured property, existing address-matching methods hardly capture the contextual and implicit semantic information of unstructured text addresses. This paper presents a Contrastive Learning model based on Global and Local representation Interaction for Address Matching (referred to as CLGLIAM), which introduces a novel global and local interaction network to enhance the discrimination ability of the model on the hard negative address by associating the relationship between the global and local address representation explicitly. Simultaneously, to improve the generalization and transferability of the model, we utilize contrastive learning to enrich the data sample and extricate the model from task-specific knowledge. Furthermore, extensive experiments are conducted on Shenzhen and national address datasets to verify the effectiveness of our approach. Our model achieves state-of-the-art F1 scores of 99.26 and 98.50 on the two datasets, respectively. We aimed to develop an accurate and efficient skin cancer classification system using deep-learning technology with a relatively small dataset of clinical images. We proposed a novel skin cancer classification method, SkinFLNet, which utilizes model fusion and lifelong learning technologies. The SkinFLNet's deep convolutional neural networks were trained using a dataset of 1215 clinical images of skin tumors diagnosed at Taichung and Taipei Veterans General Hospital between 2015 and 2020. The dataset comprised five categories: benign nevus, seborrheic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. The SkinFLNet's performance was evaluated using 463 clinical images between January and December 2021. SkinFLNet achieved an overall classification accuracy of 85%, precision of 85%, recall of 82%, F-score of 82%, sensitivity of 82%, and specificity of 93%, outperforming other deep convolutional neural network models. We also compared SkinFLNet's performance with that of three board-certified dermatologists, and the average overall performance of SkinFLNet was comparable to, or even better than, the dermatologists. Our study presents an efficient skin cancer classification system utilizing model fusion and lifelong learning technologies that can be trained on a relatively small dataset. We present a novel interpretation of the thermodynamics of perfect fluid dark matter (PFDM) black hole based on Misner–Sharp energy and then investigate its evaporation behavior. We find that the ratio between dark sector initial density and black hole horizon radius significantly influences black hole evaporation behaviors. We demonstrate that the presence of the dark sector can significantly extend the lifetime of a black hole which is similar to the Reissner–Nordström case. Snoring affects 57 % of men, 40 % of women, and 27 % of children in the USA. Besides, snoring is highly correlated with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), which is characterised by loud and frequent snoring. OSA is also closely associated with various life-threatening diseases such as sudden cardiac arrest and is regarded as a grave medical ailment. Preliminary studies have shown that in the USA, OSA affects over 34 % of men and 14 % of women. In recent years, polysomnography has increasingly been used to diagnose OSA. However, due to its drawbacks such as being time-consuming and costly, intelligent audio analysis of snoring has emerged as an alternative method. Considering the higher demand for identifying the excitation location of snoring in clinical practice, we utilised the Munich-Passau Snore Sound Corpus (MPSSC) snoring database which classifies the snoring excitation location into four categories. Nonetheless, the problem of small samples remains in the MPSSC database due to factors such as privacy concerns and difficulties in accurate labelling. In fact, accurately labelled medical data that can be used for machine learning is often scarce, especially for rare diseases. In view of this, Model-Agnostic Meta-Learning (MAML), a small sample method based on meta-learning, is used to classify snore signals with less resources in this work. The experimental results indicate that even when using only the ESC-50 dataset (non-snoring sound signals) as the data for meta-training, we are able to achieve an unweighted average recall of 60.2 % on the test dataset after fine-tuning on just 36 instances of snoring from the development part of the MPSSC dataset. While our results only exceed the baseline by 4.4 %, they still demonstrate that even with fine-tuning on a few instances of snoring, our model can outperform the baseline. Purpose: To investigate whether the cost-effective, pretreatment tumor markers carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen-125 (CA-125) can be used to predict lymph node metastasis (LNM) in endometrioid-type endometrial cancer (EC) and to develop a predictive model. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study of patients with endometrioid-type EC who underwent complete staging surgery between January 2015 and June 2022. We identified the optimal cut-off values of CEA and CA-125 for predicting LNM using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Stepwise multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors. A nomogram for predicting LNM was constructed and validated by bootstrap resampling. Results: The optimal cut-off values of CEA and CA-125 were 1.4 ng/mL (area under the ROC curve (AUC) 0.62) and 40 U/mL (AUC 0.75), respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that CEA (odds ratio (OR) 1.94; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01–3.74) and CA-125 (OR 8.75; 95% CI 4.42–17.31) were independent predictors of LNM. Our nomogram showed adequate discrimination with a concordance index of 0.78. Calibration curves for the probability of LNM showed optimal agreement between the predicted and actual probabilities. The risk of LNM for markers below the cut-offs was 3.6%. The negative predictive value and negative likelihood ratio were 96.6% and 0.26, respectively, with moderate ability to rule out the possibility of LNM. Conclusion: We report a cost-effective method of using pretreatment CEA and CA-125 levels to identify patients with endometrioid-type EC who are at a low risk for LNM, which may guide decision-making regarding aborting lymphadenectomy. Listed as endocrine-disrupting chemicals, benzophenone (BP) and its nine analogues (BPs) are an emerging group of contaminants. The migration of BPs from ultraviolet inks to food has been investigated in many studies; however, few studies have investigated BPs in foods and the risks of human exposure to BPs. We validated a trace and multi-residue method for simultaneously determining 10 BPs, including BP, BP-1, BP-2, BP-3, BP-8, 4-MBP, 2-OHBP, 4-OHBP, M2BB, and PBZ. Eighty-one bread samples were analyzed using stable isotope labeling and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry with solid-liquid extraction. We determined the estimated daily intake of BPs, non-cancer risks, and lifetime cancer risks (LTCRs) from daily bread consumption for seven age groups using a Monte Carlo simulation. The method demonstrated robust linearity (R2 ≥ 0.991), low limits of detection (0.04–2 ng/g), and satisfactory precision. The intra- and interday relative standard deviation ranges were 0.6%–9% and 3%–20%, respectively. BP, 4-MBP, 2-OHBP, BP-1, and BP-3 were detected in 97%, 67%, 59%, 24%, and 23% of the samples, respectively. 2-OHBP had the highest mean (range) value of 18.3 (−6) and hazard indices [HIs] (5.4 × 10−2). The LTCRs were lower than 10-5, and the HIs were lower than 1 in seven age groups. This suggests that exposure to BPs from bread consumption is safe and acceptable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To establish and validate a prognostic nomogram of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) using independent clinicopathological and genetic mutation factors. Methods: 213 patients with CCA (training cohort n = 151, validation cohort n = 62) diagnosed from 2012 to 2018 were included from multi-centers. Deep sequencing targeting 450 cancer genes was performed. Independent prognostic factors were selected by univariate and multivariate Cox analyses. The clinicopathological factors combined with (A)/without (B) the gene risk were used to establish nomograms for predicting overall survival (OS). The discriminative ability and calibration of the nomograms were assessed using C-index values, integrated discrimination improvement (IDI), decision curve analysis (DCA), and calibration plots. Results: The clinical baseline information and gene mutations in the training and validation cohorts were similar. SMAD4, BRCA2, KRAS, NF1, and TERT were found to be related with CCA prognosis. Patients were divided into low-, median-, and high-risk groups according to the gene mutation, the OS of which was 42.7 ± 2.7 ms (95% CI 37.5–48.0), 27.5 ± 2.1 ms (95% CI 23.3–31.7), and 19.8 ± 4.0 ms (95% CI 11.8–27.8) (p < 0.001), respectively. The systemic chemotherapy improved the OS in high and median risk groups, but not in the low-risk group. The C-indexes of the nomogram A and B were 0.779 (95% CI 0.693–0.865) and 0.725 (95% CI 0.619–0.831), p < 0.01, respectively. The IDI was 0.079. The DCA showed a good performance and the prognostic accuracy was validated in the external cohort. Conclusion: Gene risk has the potential to guide treatment decision for patients at different risks. The nomogram combined with gene risk showed a better accuracy in predicting OS of CCA than not. Mortierella alpina produces various polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of triacylglycerols (TAG). Diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT) catalyzes the binding of acyl-CoA to diacylglycerol to form TAG and is the key enzyme involved in TAG synthesis. A variety of DGATs are present in M. alpina; however, comparative analysis of the functional properties and substrate selectivity of these DGATs is insufficient. In this study, DGAT1 (MaDGAT1A/1B/1C) and DGAT2 (MaDGAT2A/2B) isoforms from M. alpina were analyzed and heterologously expressed in S. cerevisiae H1246. The results showed that MaDGAT1A/1B/2A/2B were able to restore TAG synthesis, and the corresponding TAG content in recombinant yeasts was 2.92 ± 0.42%, 3.62 ± 0.22%, 0.86 ± 0.34%, and 0.18 ± 0.09%, respectively. In S. cerevisiae H1246, MaDGAT1A preferred C16:1 among monounsaturated fatty acids, MaDGAT1B preferred C16:0 among saturated fatty acids (SFAs), and MaDGAT2A/2B preferred C18:0 among SFAs. Under exogenous addition of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), MaDGAT1A and 2A preferentially assembled linoleic acid into TAG, and MaDGAT2B had substrate selectivity for eicosapentaenoic and linoleic acids in ω-6 PUFAs. In vitro, MaDGAT1A showed no obvious acyl-CoA selectivity and MaDGAT1B preferred C20:5-CoA. MaDGAT1A/1B preferred C18:1/C18:1-DAG compared with C20:4/C20:4-DAG. This study indicates that MaDGATs have the potential to be used in the production of LA/EPA-rich TAG and provide a reference for improving the production of TAGs in oleaginous fungi. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS)-CoV-2-induced Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has caused an overwhelming influence on public health because of its high morbidity and mortality. Critical-illness cases often manifest as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Previous evidence has suggested platelets and thrombotic events as key mediators of SARS-CoV-2-associated ARDS. However, how the balance of platelet regeneration from the hematopoietic system is changed in ARDS remains elusive. Here, we reported a more severe inflammation condition and hyperactivity of platelets in COVID-19 ARDS patients compared with those infected but without ARDS. Analysis of peripheral blood revealed an increased proportion of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), common myeloid progenitors (CMPs), megakaryocyte-erythrocyte progenitors (MEPs), and megakaryocyte progenitors (MkPs) in ARDS patients, suggesting a megakaryocytic-differentiation tendency. Finally, we found altered gene expression pattern in HSCs in COVID-19 ARDS patients. Surprisingly, genes representing platelet-primed HSCs were downregulated, indicating these cells are being stimulated to differentiate. Taken together, our findings shed light on the response of the hematopoietic system to replenish platelets that were excessively consumed in COVID-19 ARDS, providing a mechanism for disease progression and further therapeutic development. Background: Cystine stone is a Mendelian genetic disease caused by SLC3A1 or SLC7A9. In this study, we aimed to estimate the genetic prevalence of cystine stones and compare it with the clinical prevalence to better understand the disease etiology. Methods: We analyzed genetic variants in the general population using the 1000 Genomes project and the Human Gene Mutation Database to extract all SLC3A1 and SLC7A9 pathogenic variants. All variants procured from both databases were intersected. Pathogenic allele frequency, carrier rate, and affected rate were calculated and estimated based on Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. Results: We found that 9 unique SLC3A1 pathogenic variants were carried by 26 people and 5 unique SLC7A9 pathogenic variants were carried by 12 people, all of whom were heterozygote carriers. No homozygote, compoun d heterozygote, or double heterozygote was identified in the 1000 Genome database. Based on the Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium, the calculated genetic prevalence of cystine stone disease is 1 in 30,585. Conclusion: The clinical prevalence of cystine stone has been previously reported as 1 in 7,000, a notably higher figure than the genetic prevalence of 1 in 30,585 calculated in this study. This suggests that the etiology of cystine stone is more complex than what our current genetic knowledge can explain. Possible factors that may contribute to this difference include novel causal genes, undiscovered pathogenic variants, alternative inheritance models, founder effects, epigenetic modifications, environmental factors, or other modifying factors. Introduction: Excessive version and inclination of the glenoid component during total shoulder arthroplasty can lead to glenohumeral instability, early loosening, and even failure. The orientation and position of the central pin determine the version and inclination of the glenoid component. The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in centerline position and orientation obtained using "3D preoperative planning based on the best-fit method for glenoid elements" and the surgeon's manipulation. Materials and methods: Twenty-nine CT images of glenohumeral osteoarthritis of the shoulder were reconstructed into a 3D model, and a 3D printer was used to create an in vitro model for the surgeon to drill the center pin. The 3D shoulder model was also used for 3D preoperative planning (3DPP) using the best-fit method for glenoid elements. The in vitro model was scanned and the version, inclination and center position were measured to compare with the 3DPP results. Results: The respective mean inclinations (versions) of the surgeon and 3DPP were −2.63° ± 6.60 (2.87° ± 5.97) and −1.96° ± 4.24 (−3.21° ± 4.00), respectively. There was no significant difference in the inclination and version of the surgeon and 3DPP. For surgeons, the probability of the inclination and version being greater than 10° was 13.8% (4/29) and 10.3% (3/29), respectively. Compared to the 3DPP results, the surgeon's center position was shifted down an average of 1.63 mm. There was a significant difference in the center position of the surgeon and 3DPP (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The central pin drilled by surgeons using general instruments was significantly lower than those defined using 3D preoperative planning and standard central definitions. 3D preoperative planning prevents the version and inclination of the centerline from exceeding safe values (± 10°). As industrial waste from aluminum production, red mud (RM) poses a severe threat to the local environment that needs to be appropriately utilized. The activation of iron oxide, which is abundant in RM, improves its effectiveness as a catalytic material for the degradation of organic pollutants. This study developed a novel activation approach by adding dithionite citrate bicarbonate (DCB) for Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation under aeration conditions. Electrochemical experiments and reactive oxygen species (ROSs) trapping experiments showed that DCB treatment enhanced the redox cycle of Fe(II)/Fe(III), which promoted free radical generation. The optimized condition for the RM activation was achieved at 21 mmol/L dithionites, 84 mmol/L citrates, and 34 mmol/L bicarbonate, and the degradation of BPA by activated RM reached 410 µg BPA per gram of RM. The SARS-CoV-2 virus has caused a public health crisis globally. Against the backdrop of global resilience, studies have demonstrated the therapeutic value of home gardening as a measure to strengthen human health. However, there is a lack of comparative studies on its benefits across countries. Studies need to examine the role of home gardening in improving public health in various societies to understand and encourage this practice broadly and effectively. We chose Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam as case studies, which have suffered substantial pandemic impacts, with millions of infections and thousands of deaths. We explored and compared the perceptions of people on home gardening and its health benefits during the COVID-19 pandemic. We conducted online surveys in three countries between May 1 and September 30, 2022, with a total of 1172 participants. Data were collated on perceived pandemic stress, challenges and solutions in gardening, home gardening intentions, and mental and physical health benefits. In these countries, we found that perceived pandemic stress positively affects home gardening intentions, whereby the motivation of Vietnamese people is the highest. Challenges hinder gardening intentions, while the solutions only positively affect gardening intentions in Taiwan and Vietnam. Home gardening intentions positively affect mental and physical health, whereby there are higher mental health benefits in Taiwanese people than in Thai people. Increasing evidence suggests that PCSK9 inhibition protects cardiomyocytes against ischemia-reperfusion injury after myocardial infarction. However, it is not clear whether PCSK9 inhibitor (PCSK9i) affects cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) activation after MI. In this study we used SBC-115076, an antagonist of PCSK9, to investigate the role of PCSK9i in the conversion of CFs to cardiac myofibroblasts (CMFs) after MI and provided a basic for its clinical application in cardiac fibrosis after MI. In vivo study, PCSK9i was injected into mice 4 days after MI. Cardiac function and degree of fibrosis were evaluated by echocardiographic and tissue staining after treatment. Western blot showed that PCSK9i treatment decreases expression of α-SMA, collagen and increases expression of Notch1 in border infarct area. Vitro studies showed that PCSK9i decreased the degree of fibrosis, migration, and collagen fiber deposition in CFs. Confocal microscopy imaging also showed that hypoxia contributes to the formation of α-SMA stress filaments, and PCSK9i alleviated this state. Moreover, overexpression of Notch1 further suppress the activation of CFs under hypoxia. These results revealed that SBC-115076 ameliorates cardiac fibrosis and ventricular dysfunction post-myocardial infarction through inhibition of the differentiation of cardiac fibroblasts to myofibroblasts via Notch1/Hes1 signaling. Background: To compare the outcomes of blunt splenic injuries (BSI) managed with proximal (P) versus distal (D) versus combined (C) splenic artery embolization (SAE). Methods: This retrospective study included patients with BSI who demonstrated vascular injuries on angiograms and were managed with SAE between 2001 and 2015. The success rate and major complications (Clavien–Dindo classification ≥ III) were compared between the P, D, and C embolizations. Results: In total, 202 patients were enrolled (P, n = 64, 31.7%; D, n = 84, 41.6%; C, n = 54, 26.7%). The median injury severity score was 25. The median times from injury to SAE were 8.3, 7.0, and 6.6 h for the P, D, and C embolization, respectively. The overall haemostasis success rates were 92.6%, 93.8%, 88.1%, and 98.1% in the P, D, and C embolizations, respectively, with no significant difference (p = 0.079). Additionally, the outcomes were not significantly different between the different types of vascular injuries on angiograms or the materials used in the location of embolization. Splenic abscess occurred in six patients (P, n = 0; D, n = 5; C, n = 1), although it occurred more commonly in those who underwent D embolization with no significant difference (p = 0.092). Conclusions: The success rate and major complications of SAE were not significantly different regardless of the location of embolization. In this paper, we calculated the quasinormal modes (QNMs) of a charged non-commutative black hole in scalar, electromagnetic and gravitational fields by three methods. We gave the influence of non-commutative parameter θ and charge Q on QNMs in different fields. Thereafter, we calculated the shadow radius of the black hole and provided the valid range of θ and Q using the constraints on the shadow radius of M87 ∗ and Sgr A ∗ from the event horizon telescope. In addition, we estimated the "relative deviation" of the shadow radius ( δ R s ) between non-commutative space-time and commutative space-time. We found that the maximum values of δ R s decreases with the increase in charge Q. In other words, the non-commutativity of space-time becomes harder to distinguish as the charge of the black hole increases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Microelectromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensors based on silicon are widely used and offer the benefits of miniaturization and high precision. However, they cannot easily withstand high temperatures exceeding 150 °C because of intrinsic material limits. Herein, we proposed and executed a systematic and full-process study of SiC-based MEMS pressure sensors that operate stably from −50 to 300 °C. First, to explore the nonlinear piezoresistive effect, the temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) values of 4H-SiC piezoresistors were obtained from −50 to 500 °C. A conductivity variation model based on scattering theory was established to reveal the nonlinear variation mechanism. Then, a piezoresistive pressure sensor based on 4H-SiC was designed and fabricated. The sensor shows good output sensitivity (3.38 mV/V/MPa), accuracy (0.56% FS) and low temperature coefficient of sensitivity (TCS) (−0.067% FS/°C) in the range of −50 to 300 °C. In addition, the survivability of the sensor chip in extreme environments was demonstrated by its anti-corrosion capability in H2SO4 and NaOH solutions and its radiation tolerance under 5 W X-rays. Accordingly, the sensor developed in this work has high potential to measure pressure in high-temperature and extreme environments such as are faced in geothermal energy extraction, deep well drilling, aeroengines and gas turbines. Although bullous pemphigoid (BP) and atopic dermatitis (AD) share pathogenic mechanisms, their relationship remains controversial. Therefore, we conducted a population-based case–control study to investigate the association between BP and AD in Taiwan. Based on the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 9344 patients with BP and 18,688 age- and sex-matched controls were enrolled between 2000 and 2013. Furthermore, the study included 7,196 BP patients and 14,392 controls, matched for age, sex, and propensity score of comorbidities, with a case to controls ratio of 1:2. Logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the association between AD and BP. In the age- and sex-matched cohorts, AD (odds ratio [OR], 1.71; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.50–1.95) was independently associated with BP. In the age, sex, and comorbidities-matched cohorts, AD (OR 1.76, 95% CI 1.55–2.00) remained a significant risk factor for BP. Other significant risk factors included psoriasis, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, neuropsychiatric diseases, and autoimmune connective tissue disease. Limitations of this study include the lack of information on disease severity and phenotypes of BP and misclassification of diseases as potential sources of bias. In conclusion, AD increased the risk of developing BP by 76%, and this association was independent of many BP comorbidities. Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) is an important stage of a homogeneous and isotropic expanding universe. The results of calculation of the synthesis of light elements during this epoch can then be compared with the abundances of the light elements. The theoretical calculation of the BBN model depends on the initial conditions of the early universe and reaction cross sections measured by the nuclear physics experiment. Recently, an update of the Nuclear Astrophysics Compilation of REactions database is presented. This improved compilation comprises thermonuclear reaction rates for 34 two-body reactions on light nuclides (fifteen are particle transfer reactions and nineteen are radiative capture reactions). In this work, we calculate the BBN abundances by using these updated thermonuclear reaction rates in the framework of the code AlterBBN. Our results suggest that the new numerical result of the primordial Lithium abundance is 7.1% larger than the previous calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Sylvester equation plays an important role in many branches of mathematical physics. The goal of this paper is to show that a special case of the Sylvester equation can be related to the lattice B-type Kadomtsev–Petviashvili (BKP) system via the generalized Cauchy matrix method. We use the variables given in the Sylvester equation to define the function and several scalar functions that are closely related to the lattice BKP equation. After rederiving the lattice BKP equation, we make it clear that besides its multisoliton solutions, various other types of exact solutions also exist. In this work, we investigate the scattering of massless plane scalar waves by the high dimensional non-commutative Schwarzschild–Tangherlini black hole. We use the partial wave approach to determine the scattering and absorption cross sections in the incident wavelength range. Our numerical results demonstrate that the bigger the non-commutative parameter, the smaller the maximum value of the related partial absorption cross section, however the tendency is slightly. We also discovered that when the non-commutative parameter is weak, the absorption cross section of the high dimensional black hole oscillates in the low frequency zone. The total absorption cross section oscillates around the geometrical optical limit in the high frequency range, and the scattering characteristics of black holes with various parameters are visibly different. The study of deep end-to-end representation learning for 2D to 3D monocular human pose estimation is a common yet challenging task in computer vision. However, current methods still face the problem that the recognized 3D key points are inconsistent with the actual joint positions. The strategy that trains 2D to 3D networks using 3D human poses with corresponding 2D projections to solve this problem is effective. On this basis, we build a cascaded monocular 3D human pose estimation network, which uses a hierarchical supervision network, and uses the proposed composite residual module (CRM) and enhanced fusion module (EFM) as the main components. In the cascaded network, CRMs are stacked to form cascaded modules. Compared with the traditional residual module, the proposed CRM expands the information flow channels. In addition, the proposed EFM is alternately placed with cascaded modules, which addresses the problems of reduced accuracy and low robustness caused by multi-level cascade. We test the proposed network on the standard benchmark Human3.6M dataset and MPI-INF-3DHP dataset. We compare the results under the fully-supervised methods with six algorithms and the results under the weakly-supervised methods with five algorithms.
