This paper explores status relations in a Romanian migrant ‘community’ in Spain, developing a model of social differentiation within the ‘community’ based on ethnographic material. On a theoretical level, the paper builds on the distinction between ‘class’ and ‘status’, emphasising the latter's significance for migration research. Empirically, it aims to complement the study of status in the localities of origin, with a focus on status in the ‘communities’ at the destination. The paper suggests the existence of a developmental line in differentiation practices, from the most basic strategies of economic status improvement through the complex mechanisms of ‘prestige’ status recovery to the first occupational advancements with an associated status relevant in the receiving society, shaped by internal factors and external structural forces. Based on this, the paper proposes the model of social differentiation as a schematic tool that could become helpful in examining other phenomena related to migrant communities, especially their ‘adaptation possibilities’. International migratory movements tend to produce the reality of divided families that are located in at least two different places. The literature on divided or transnational families and family reunification movements has shown how the socio-demographic determinants in origin and the socio-economic and institutional factors in destination drive these processes. Assuming that migratory movements are the result to a large extent of specifically familial dynamics and strategies, in this paper we are interested in exploring whether other elements associated to the country of origin and to the relationship between country of origin and country of destination have a discernible influence on the family results of migration and, specifically, on the separation and subsequent reunification of the immigrant families. This complex set of elements builds on the playing field where migratory decisions are taken. The Spanish case, characterized by a sudden explosion of international immigration between 2000 and 2007 and significant numbers of Latin American migrants arriving during these years, is a particularly suitable scenario to investigate this phenomenon. Spanish Legacies first stands out for the successful replication of the highly influential, seminal Children of Immigrants Longitudinal Study investigation in a context quite different from the original American one, proving the exportability of its theoretical and analytical design and of its methodology. Additionally, it makes an invaluable contribution to the knowledge of the process of immigrant integration and its determinants in Spain, the country chosen for the replication. And it offers a rich and most interesting comparison about the integration of the second generation in two very different countries, the US and Spain, enriched by the fact that is based on a common research design. Ukrainians in Spain have gone from being a numerically insignificant immigrant group to currently being the seventh largest. In response to the lack of research about Ukrainians in Spain, two investigations were carried out between 2005 and 2007 in collaboration with the Association of Ukrainians in Murcia. Various techniques were used for obtaining information (in-depth interviews with members of the Ukrainian community, a survey, and a discussion group). This article examines the evolution and main characteristics of the Ukrainian immigration to Spain. Special attention is paid to the Ukrainian immigration to the Murcia region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
