Project-based learning is among the most common learning approaches aimed at conveying professional standards and best practices to students in programming courses. However, team projects commonly impose problems related to responsibility sharing, such as low effort or inequality in contributions. This paper presents a collaborative programming assessment system featuring a code quality assessment function with specific metrics to measure individual contributions. Student engagement data is used to detect nonconformities in collaboration using a learning analytical approach. Latent profile analysis was used to detect four theoretical team profiles differentiated by team effort (2 levels) and within-team collaboration (2 levels). We demonstrated the efficacy of assessing code to evaluate team dynamics and student behaviour, wherein efforts to resolve coding style failures can be used as a proxy by which to estimate the taskwork awareness of team members. Submission data from 146 students in 41 web-programming projects revealed four behavioural patterns that could potentially hinder the effective functioning of programming teams: free-riding, social loafing, the bystander effect, and lone wolves. We also demonstrated the applicability of automated programming assessment systems to the monitoring of learning progress, thereby facilitating timely interventions to correct difficulties at the team level. Moral thinking and communication are critical competencies for confronting social dilemmas in a challenging world. We examined these moral competencies in 70 college students and graduates from Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Participants were assessed through semi-structured written interviews, Facebook group discussions, and a questionnaire. In this paper, we describe the similarities and differences across cultural groupings in (1) the social issues of greatest importance to the participants; (2) the factors influencing their approaches to thinking about social issues and communicating with others; and (3) the characteristics of their moral functioning in terms of moral awareness, moral judgment, moral discourse, and moral decision-making. This paper examines the development of ergonomics in Taiwan by analysing 1404 scientific articles published by 113 permanent members of the Ergonomics Society of Taiwan (EST). Each article was classified by key words and abstract content. Each article was also coded by period of publication (1971–1992 (first period), 1993–1997 (second period), 1998–2002 (third period), 2003–2007 (fourth period), and 2008–2012 (fifth period), and against 13 topic categories. The results show that rate of publication has increased by approximately 100 articles every five years since 1993.The most popular topic was ergonomics assessment and analysis techniques in the first period, force exertion-related research in the second period, product design and evaluation in the third period, occupational safety and health in the fourth period and human–computer interface in the fifth period. Each of these is highly relevant to current contemporary issues around the world. Finally, potential areas for future ergonomics research in Taiwan are discussed. Over time, topics have shifted from ergonomics evaluation methods to occupational safety and health, and human–computer interaction. Improving nutritional intake contributes to maintaining the health and quality of life of the older population and reducing individual and societal healthcare costs. We collaborated with two community service hubs and a public health center in Taipei's Daan District to develop a personalized community-based health and nutrition program using service design. The design was validated through a model encompassing perceived usefulness, service experience, perceived value, and behavioral intention, analyzed using PLS-SEM modeling on 76 individuals. The results showed bidirectional influences among these factors. This study provides practical recommendations for formulating public health policies and health promotion programs for older adults. The paper investigates the effects of phone use (talking, texting, and listening to music) on the street-crossing behaviours of pedestrians and their inattentional blindness in Taiwan. Recent handsets with touchscreens, as well as more advanced features including multimedia, and mobile applications (apps), exacerbate problems relating to cognitive distraction and reduced situation awareness. A controlled field study using video cameras was conducted for observing pedestrians’ crossing behaviours (e.g. crossing time, sudden stops, looking both ways before crossing, and disobeying traffic signals). Pedestrians were classified into two groups: experimental group (talking, texting, and listening to music) and control group (no phone use). Pedestrians’ inattentional blindness was examined by evaluating whether they saw and heard an unusual object (i.e. a clown) nearby. The results indicate that the proportions of unsafe crossing behaviours (e.g. sudden stops, disobeying traffic signals, and not looking both ways before crossing) were higher among distracted individuals and more pronounced among those using instant-messaging apps. These instant-message app users were the least likely to see the clown, and music listeners were the least likely to hear the horn that the clown was honking. Contributing factors to unsafe behaviours include being a student, having a phone screen of 5 inches or larger, and having unlimited 3G Internet access. Drawing upon the ‘stimulus-organism-response’ framework, this paper examines how the ease of navigation (EON) of a website affects consumers' online impulse buying. We also compared the effects of various virtual layouts (i.e. grid, freeform, racetrack, and mix grid–freeform) on consumers' perceptions of EON, emotional responses, and the urge to buy impulsively. Based on questionnaire responses from 216 participants in a stratified survey, we found that EON significantly influences consumers' emotional responses, pleasantness, and arousal, which subsequently affects their urge to buy impulsively. We also found that compared with the other three layouts, manifestations of navigability, freeform is the easiest to navigate, and is able to elicit the highest level of pleasantness and the strongest urge to buy impulsively. This study aimed to evaluate how differently co-located users perform and interact while solving problems by using existing and newly developed interaction mechanisms of a multi-touch tabletop system on a large-size tabletop display. Furthermore, this study aimed to investigate users’ perceived situation awareness due to the system. This study conducted one experiment and introduced three newly developed interaction mechanisms:two-way rubber band, drag-and-response,andcentre collection area.Two-way rubber band enables users not only to send but also to request digital objects. Drag-and-response allows users to accept or to reject digital objects sent by others; therefore, it eliminates conflicting situations and interference. Centre collection area stores, organises, and manages shared digital resources on a surface of a tabletop display, so that users have an overall picture of available resources. Blogs are one of the most widely used Internet applications; however, there is a lack of attention paid to understanding blog adoption with respect to individual reading/writing habits. This paper, therefore, investigates how individual reading and writing habits contribute to blog adoption. A survey was conducted in order to understand the relationship between an individual's reading and writing habits, in terms of reading/writing attitude and reading/writing behavioural patterns, and the adoption of blogs. A total of 210 blog users participated in the study. Hypotheses were tested and data were analysed using multiple regression analysis and logistic regression analysis. The results revealed that reading and writing habits are a significant predictor of blog adoption. Furthermore, based on Rogers' diffusion of innovation theory, this study also investigated whether people's habitual characteristics (i.e. heavy and light) have some sort of relationship with the stage of blog adoption (i.e. earlier and later). A subsequent analysis showed that people with a heavier reading habit group tended to adopt at an earlier stage, while this consequence was absent in those with heavier writing habits groups. This paper presents a self-paced reading experiment comparing the processing of subject-extracted relative clauses (SRCs) and object-extracted relative clauses (ORCs) in supportive contexts in Chinese. It is argued that lack of a consistent pattern in the literature for the comparison between Chinese SRCs and ORCs is due to potential temporary ambiguity in these constructions in null contexts. By placing the materials in contexts biased towards a relative clause (RC) interpretation, we limit the effects of temporary ambiguity. The results of the experiment demonstrate that SRCs are read more slowly than ORCs in supportive contexts. These results provide evidence for working memory-based sentence processing theories whereby processing difficulty increases for connecting sentence elements that are further apart. Some convergent evidence that strengthens these conclusions comes from recent research on aphasic populations where a dissociation between English and Chinese RC processing has been revealed: whereas English aphasic patients have more difficulty with ORCs and Chinese aphasic patients have more difficulty with SRCs (Su, Lee, & Chung, 2007). Depression and self‐esteem affects the health and quality of life of older adults who live in nursing homes. This study tested the effectiveness of art therapy activities on reducing the depression and improving the self-esteem of elderly living in long‐term care institutes. This was a quasi‐experimental study. A purposive sampling strategy was used to select 55 subjects who were aged 65 and above with intact mental functions and depression tendencies and currently residing in nursing homes in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. 29 subjects who participated in a selection of 12 artistic activities were assigned to the experimental group and 26 subjects who adhered to their ordinary activities were allocated to the control group. Structured questionnaires of the artistic group were used for data collection. The art therapy programs showed promising effects in improving the depression and self‐esteem of older adults living in nursing homes. Art therapy activities benefit the mental health of older adults. The purpose of this study was to explore the attitudes toward the components of active aging and to examine the relationship of attitudes toward active aging with the impressions of older adults across different age groups and across Taiwan, South Korea and Japan. The sample was a total 1,619 individuals comprising of 615 Taiwanese people, 495 Koreans, and 509 Japanese people. Five factors of attitudes toward active aging were extracted by factor analysis: Health, Participation, Connectedness, Work, and Security. Taiwanese people emphasized more importance on health, social participation, and security; while Koreans and Japanese people emphasized more on social connectedness and work. The age group differences were not significant in the attitudes to active aging. Japanese reported more negative impressions to older adults than Taiwanese people, and Koreans were less willing to live with older adults than Taiwanese people. The older group also reported more positive impressions to older adults. Public stigma of aging may exist, implying that intergenerational mutual understanding would reduce ageism or age discrimination. Commercial digital drawing pens have incorporated color sensing capabilities to improve the interactive experience of drawing. However, despite these improvements, it remains unclear whether color sensing and picking functions improve drawing learning performance. This study observed third and fourth grade elementary school students, who were in the "dawning realism" stage of artistic development, to determine how using a digital drawing pen with a color sensing function affected their color perception and feature detection abilities. This study analyzed quantitative data on color choice, with some students directly picking colors from the surface of an object and other students choosing colors from the app's default palette. This study also interviewed a focus group of experts who compared between the two aforementioned methods of choosing colors, as used in drawings. The results revealed the following advantages of using a digital drawing pen to directly pick colors off object surfaces: (1) children better utilize and depict the color gradient; (2) children interact with and observe objects and their shapes more thoroughly; (3) children draw objects' shapes and colors more precisely; and (4) children, being in the dawning realism stage, are better able to satisfy their need to perceive the colors and features of objects. The purpose of this study was to select a core vocabulary list obtained from Mandarin Chinese-speaking Taiwanese persons without disabilities. Mandarin Chinese is dominant and official language of Taiwan. A total of 28 participants, equally divided among seven age groups, were recruited for the study. In all, 112 samples across different communication contexts were collected. Results indicated that 100 core words selected had coverage of 66.7% of the entire composite sample. The proportion of function words versus content words in the top 100 core words was 11% and 89%, respectively. The core vocabulary was categorized into eight parts of speech, including nouns, pronouns, numbers, adverbs, determiners, prepositions, adjectives, and verbs. Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) has been used by patients with acquired expressive communication disorders as an alternative to natural speech. The use of symbols to express pain, which is intangible, is challenging because designing a series of comprehensible symbols to represent personal experiences such as pain is not straightforward. This study describes (a) the development of symbols to express pain that were derived from Chinese pain-related similes and metaphors for an AAC mobile application developed specifically for this study known as PainDiary and (b) an assessment of the appropriateness of the app compared to conventional methods of collecting pain information. The symbols depicted headache pain and discomfort, which is prevalent among neurosurgical patients. The participants were 31 patients diagnosed with acquired expressive communication disorders who were receiving treatment in a neurosurgery general ward of Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan and 14 nurses who worked on the ward. Pain information was collected by nurses using conventional methods and the PainDiary app. Assessment data, including the accuracy and efficiency of and user satisfaction with PainDiary, are compared. The results show that use of the app was effective in reporting pain and that patients required less time to report a pain event. The purpose of the current study was to explore how effectively journal author guides communicate with graduate students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in Taiwan. A 10-item three-tier test was developed to explore the participants' (1) confidence level in their reading comprehension of excerpts from author guides, (2) their actual comprehension, and (3) their understanding, if any. The test consisted of 10 excerpts from author guides that covered a variety of topics related to plagiarism. The test was administered to 46 EFL graduate students. The findings revealed that the selected excerpts from the author guides caused confusion, which led to misunderstanding by the readers. Among the 10 types of plagiarism, citation issues and copying of methods sections were the the most understood, whereas self-plagiarism was the least understood type. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While there is currently a steadily growing number of disabled students at universities in Taiwan, there has been as yet no research concerning the attitude towards inclusive education of university instructors. This study investigated differences in attitude towards inclusive education among instructors at universities in Taiwan using a 'University Instructor Attitude towards Inclusive Education' questionnaire to examine instructors' attitudes and the differences in inclusive education of instructors' attitudes in various background variables. The inclusive education attitude questionnaire contained three subscales respectively examining cognition, affection, and behavioural tendencies; 299 valid ones of the 400 distributed questionnaires were collected, the valid questionnaire response rate was 74.7%. The study revealed that while university instructors in Taiwan had an active, positive attitude towards inclusive education, there were significant differences in attitude towards inclusive education among instructors with different gender, special education backgrounds, school type, and teaching field. This study also makes recommendations based on our findings, hopes to provide a reference aiding the drafting of special education policies at the higher education level in Taiwan, and also seeks to provide Taiwan's experience to other countries as a reference. Employing Oliver's disconfirmation theory as a theoretical basis, we examined the relationships between school teachers' attitudes, expectations and satisfaction with collaborating with school counsellors. Also, structural equation modelling was used to determine the effects of counsellors' professional traits on teacher satisfaction. Stratified sampling yielded a sample of 395 homeroom teachers from 26 public schools in Taoyuan City, Taiwan, representing a 94.4% response rate. We found: (1) teachers were highly satisfied with their collaborations with school counsellors, (2) teachers' collaborative attitudes and expectations were significant predictors of their satisfaction, supporting Oliver's theory, and (3) counsellor's professional traits significantly affected teachers' collaborative attitudes, expectations, and satisfaction. Strategy training is a promising stroke rehabilitation intervention commonly delivered in Western countries. We examined the perspectives of rehabilitation therapists who have delivered strategy training in Taiwan and the United States to understand the influence of culture on strategy training implementation. In this rapid ethnographic study, the maximum variation sampling approach was used to recruit seven therapists in Taiwan and seven therapists in the United States with experience delivering strategy training. Data was collected from multiple sources, including interviews, study documents, therapist notes, and reflective memos. Interviews with the recruited therapists in Taiwan and the United States were conducted in Mandarin and English, respectively. Data were analyzed using a constant comparative approach. The following two themes were generated: (1) differences between conventional rehabilitation and strategy training, namely that conventional rehabilitation is therapist-directed and emphasizes impairment reduction, whereas strategy training empowers clients and focuses on real-life generalization, and (2) challenges in implementing strategy training in practice, including difficulty in achieving client buy-in and disengagement. Therapists from both countries shared similar perspectives on the perceived advantages of strategy training, such as enhancing client empowerment and engagement, and the generalization of strategies. Family involvement was more prominently discussed by therapists in Taiwan than by those in the United States. Strategy training differs from conventional rehabilitation in its emphasis on clients' life participation and empowerment, generalization of strategies, and enhancement of their engagement, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Therapists may face challenges related to client buy-in and disengagement as well as difficulties in establishing a therapeutic rapport at the beginning of strategy training because clients have different expectations from those of conventional rehabilitation. Cultural differences in norms and expectations and the clinical experiences of therapists may influence the delivery of strategy training to clients. Family support may influence the success of strategy training. Thoughtful conversations to reach a mutual understanding regarding the expectations of strategy training among clients, family, and rehabilitation practitioners are necessary prior to implementing strategy training. Health literacy among patients is crucial for effective stroke management. The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire is a theory-based measure that comprehensively captures 12 domains of health literacy. We aimed to develop a computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire to efficiently assess health literacy among patients with stroke. The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire data of 311 patients and item parameters were retrieved from a Rasch validation study. Real data simulations were performed to develop a computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire and explore its efficiency and reliability. The computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire displayed suitable reliability in all 12 domains (0.72–0.84) with a mean test length of 17 items (36.2% of the 47-item European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire). Our findings indicate that the computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire, which assesses 12 domains of health literacy among patients with stroke in a timely and precise fashion, is efficient and reliable. The computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire assesses the subjective fit of personal health literacy competencies to environmental demands, providing insight into patient strengths and weaknesses when dealing with health tasks and interacting with health systems. The computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire assesses the 12 domains of health literacy among patients with stroke in a timely and precise manner. Our study has demonstrated the utility of the computerized adaptive test of the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire in reducing the assessment burden of patients in clinical practice. Parties in a positive affective state generally boost creativity in social commerce. Superior institution-based trust may enhance multi-sided partners' positive affective reactions that lead to facilitate actively engagement for achieving the benefits of value co-creation. This study develops a conceptual model in which third-party assurance mechanisms and third-party logistics act as moderating constructs for examining the relation between agility and the network effect, both of which affect value co-creation. The results show that institution-based trust operates through the interaction between agility and multi-sided mechanisms in ensuring the value co-creation as it reinforces the network effects in the process. The findings of the study provide practical insights into how online merchants can reinforce the interaction between agility and multi-sided mechanisms so as to provide positive affective state and in turn enhance network effects and value co-creation that improves the social commerce platform as a whole. This study investigates three aspirated voiceless stop consonants and their unaspirated counterparts produced in Taiwan's Southern Min dialect by 10 laryngeal speakers (LA), 10 speakers with pneumatic artificial larynxes (PA), and 10 oesophageal speakers (ES). Listeners' perceptions of the accuracy of the three groups in producing these six stop consonants were also examined. Each of the voiceless stop consonants /p, pʰ, t, tʰ, k, kʰ/, followed by the vowel /a/, was represented by a Southern Min character and appeared three times on a list in random order. Each character had a consonant-vowel syllable structure, and all were read with Tone 1 (high and level). Voice onset time (VOT) was measured for each stop consonant. A separate group of 20 listeners was then asked to identify the consonants produced by the LA, PA, and ES speakers. The VOT values of aspirated voiceless stop consonants from PA and ES were shorter than those from LA. Although PA and ES had aspiration contrast in their VOT values, perceived accuracy was low for PA (/pʰ/: 16.3%; /tʰ/: 13.5%; /kʰ/: 22.8%) and ES (/pʰ/: 33.7%; /tʰ/: 25.9%; /kʰ/: 31.9%). The mean percentages of correctly identified /pʰ, tʰ, kʰ/ produced by PA were at chance level. In terms of VOT values, it is recommended that, when producing aspirated voiceless stop consonants, PA and ES elongate the duration between the release of the oral constriction and the onset of their vibratory sound source. Enhancing children's daily participation is the optimal goal of early childhood intervention. This study aimed to identify child and family predictors of participation for toddlers with global developmental delay. Fifty-nine toddlers with global developmental delay (aged 24–43 months) and their mothers participated in a 6-month longitudinal study. Predictors for participation were child factors [age, gender, delay severity, mastery motivation (perceived persistence and task persistence), and withdrawal behavior], and family factors (socioeconomic status, family income, maternal education, stress, and maternal teaching behavior). Dependent variables were participation diversity and intensity of four activity types measured 6-month later using the Assessment of Preschool Children's Participation (Chinese version). Correlation and hierarchical regression statistical methods were used. Older children with higher persistence had higher overall participation. Different factors predicted different participation dimensions and different activity types. Older age, higher perceived persistence, and being less withdrawn predicted higher diversity and intensity for play participation. For skill development participation, older age, less severity, higher mastery motivation, and better maternal teaching behaviors predicted higher diversity; and age, mastery motivation and maternal teaching predicted intensity. Different factors predict participation attendance differently. Supporting parents to enhance toddlers' mastery motivation may optimize children's participation in daily activities. Based on the child and their caregiver preferences, applicability and/or engagement for different activity types, interventionists could collaborate further with caregivers to find strategies to increase children's participation attendance in daily life. Interventionists could consult with caregivers: (a) to observe the persistence and positive affect (mastery motivation) of children during different activities, (b) to figure out the possible barriers to participation in those activities, and (c) to demonstrate appropriate caregiver-child interactions. Given the increasing popularity of active aging agendas around the globe, the positive and sustainable impacts of welfare services on older adults attracted our attention. Previous studies based on social quality-related theories have examined the effects of different forms of social life mechanism on subjective well-being (SWB) as perceived by older adults. Yet, as evidence continues to emerge pointing to the positive relationship between quality of life and SWB, the present study aimed to incorporate the impacts of three enabling factors of active aging, namely social connectedness, economic support and technology acceptance, in explaining welfare service in terms of satisfaction, needs and awareness, a condition that may also facilitate SWB. The on-site face-to-face survey in Yunlin county was conducted through a rigorous systematic sampling method and ultimately received a valid sample comprising 600 Taiwanese older adults aged 65–101 years (mean age = 76.78 years). Our results showed that social connectedness, economic support and technology acceptance significantly and positively predict SWB among older adults. Moreover, SWB for older adults was found to be positively predicted by welfare satisfaction, which was also found to mediate the effect of economic support on SWB. Several factors, including healthcare outcomes and quality, influence patients' expectations of healthcare services. Currently, as patients have more understanding about dental care services, patient satisfaction is essential for continually improving the services being provided. The purpose of this study is to analyze the multiyear annual National Health Insurance (NHI) patient experience survey in Taiwan to explore the factors associated with the satisfaction rate from 2012–2016. This study used the annual NHI survey to explore patients' experiences of receiving medical service in dental care from 2012 to 2016. There were over 40 major items in the survey each year; however, we only selected suitable items that followed the Andersen model. We ran a logistics regression testing the relationship between the covariates and the items related to satisfaction in outcomes in different years. Patients who received health education from a provider in most time, self-reported better health status, felt that cost of care was not expensive, did not wait too long for counseling time and found it easy to make an appointment, had two to ten times greater satisfaction in outcomes compared with those who did not (OR: 1.83–10.06). Individuals working in the healthcare industry should implement communication strategies to improve patients' experience in the care process by including easy-to-understand explanations or sharing decision-making with patients. Furthermore, in patient experience surveys in dental care, less attention should be paid to whether patients can provide meaningful quality measures and more attention to ways in which patient experiences can be improved. The epidemic prevention cloud allows infection control professionals to streamline many of their reporting procedures, thereby improving patient safety in a cost-effective manner. Based on task-technology fit and status quo bias perspectives, this study develops an integrated model to explain individuals' health information technology usage behaviour. We conducted a field survey in 30 Taiwan hospitals to collect data from infection control professionals with using experience of the epidemic prevention cloud. A total of 167 questionnaires were sent out, and 116 were returned from 18 hospitals. To test the proposed research hypothesis, we employed a structural equation model by the partial least squares method. The results found that both task – (p <.01) and technology-related characteristics (p <.001) influence task-technology fit. Task-technology fit has a positive effect on both utilisation (p <.001) and performance (p <.001), while it appears to have a negative effect on resistance to use (p <.001). Our results showed that resistance to use was caused by uncertainty costs (p <.01) and perceived value (p <.01). The results indicate the significant effect of utilisation on performance (p <.01). Further, the results indicate a significant negative effect of resistance to use on utilisation (p <.05). Early identification of borderline personality disorder (BPD) is important as timely interventions are beneficial and cost-effective. Unrecognized BPD not only results in suffering for individuals and their families, but also leads to considerable social costs. Although web-based measures have the potential to facilitate screening assessment of BPD for research and clinical purposes, little is known about whether the results of web-based measures of BPD are valid. This preliminary study aims to examine the validity of a web-based measure of BPD. We analyzed data from five independent samples (N = 828 in total). The web-based BPD measure had a consistent relationship with relevant variables, including trauma exposure, mental well-being, depression, post-traumatic stress, dissociation and psychotic features across samples. It was also strongly correlated with another BPD measure. The web-based BPD measure could discriminate between participants with and without BPD and the discrimination performance was excellent (area under the curve =.853). The initial findings suggest that the web-based BPD measure used in the present study is valid and may be helpful for research and screening purposes, although it should be followed up with a more comprehensive assessment in clinical settings. This study investigated motivations and potential influence paths driving experiential browsing and goal-directed shopping intentions coexisting on social commerce (s-commerce) websites based on the model of goal-directed behavior (MGB). Surveys and research model tests were conducted using SmartPLS. Results revealed that users have more substantial social and hedonic motivations and social desire than utilitarian motivation for using s-commerce websites, which can lead to a higher experiential browsing intention. However, goal-directed shopping intentions of users can only be boosted using utilitarian motivation through the mediation of attitude toward s-commerce or commercial desire. Moreover, the results revealed the critical role of user attitude toward s-commerce compared with that of user desires in both experiential browsing and goal-directed shopping intentions. This study is the first in which the MGB was extended to explore the influence paths driving experiential browsing and goal-directed shopping intentions in the s-commerce context by simultaneously considering the mediating roles of desire and attitude. The empirical results of this study can be utilized by companies and s-commerce websites to develop effective strategies for strengthening user motivation to use s-commerce websites, which can enhance their shopping and browsing intentions. Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability characterized by deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts. Existing literature on social relationships and well-being among adolescents with ASD in Asian countries is scant. Aims: This study compared the perceptions of adolescents with ASD with those of their neurotypical peers toward their friendship quality, activity participation, and emotional well-being, and examined the relationships between friendship quality, activity participation, and emotional well-being. Methods: The study participants—101 adolescents with ASD and 101 neurotypical peers, aged 10–19 years—completed the following self-administered questionnaires: the Friendship Quality Questionnaire, the Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the short-form UCLA loneliness scale. Results: Adolescents with ASD reported lower friendship quality, lower school participation, and higher levels of anxiety and loneliness compared to their neurotypical peers. Loneliness correlated negatively with friendship quality and school participation and positively with anxiety. Adolescents with ASD experienced increased levels of anxiety when low friendship quality was accompanied by greater loneliness. Conclusions and significance: These findings reveal that friendship quality, school participation, and loneliness have a considerable effect on the emotional well-being of adolescents with ASD, thus indicating the need for therapeutic interventions that address interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the cultural and semantic equivalence of the Activity Measure Post-Acute Care (AM-PAC) outpatient short forms after they were translated from American English to Mandarin Chinese. Method: This study was conducted with a composite sample of a group of 483 American adults (mean age 63.1 years, 42.4% males) and 553 Taiwanese adults (mean age 60.6 years, 47.2% males) who were undergoing home care or outpatient rehabilitation services. A confirmatory factor analysis tested the cultural equivalence of the AM-PAC dimensions between the US and Taiwanese samples. Semantic equivalence was tested through an item response theory-based differential item functioning (DFI) analysis. Results: Results of the confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated good model-data fit of the AM-PAC in both the US and Taiwanese samples. Significant DFI was found for six Basic Mobility items, two Daily Activity items, and four Applied Cognition items. A DFI adjusted conversion table was generated to transform the raw scores of the measure for comparisons between the two countries. Conclusions: This study provides evidence to support the conceptual equivalence of the AM-PAC when used in rehabilitation patients between American and Taiwanese cultural contexts. Some DFI items between the two groups were found, suggesting that some differences in semantic understanding of these items between cultures require cross-cultural adjustments. Cultural equivalence needs to be tested before applying a clinical measure to another context. The findings of this study supported the three activity domains that the Activity Measure Post-Acute Care measures: Basic Mobility, Daily Activity, and Applied Cognition, which are all important rehabilitation outcomes that need to be assessed and monitored across rehabilitation settings. Differential item functioning was observed between the English and Chinese versions of the Activity Measure Post-Acute Care, indicating that linguistic and cultural differences across countries need to be adjusted for before using the translated measure in clinical practice. Research has demonstrated that social exclusion can lead to negative implications on an individual's health status. In response to the need to examine health disparities among the older adult populations, this study explores social exclusion issues faced by older Taiwanese adults as a predictive factor to healthcare. The 80-item Social Inclusion/Exclusion Scale was developed and validated with input from 327 older adults recruited from 40 social service agencies in Taiwan. Findings suggest that to improve the overall health status among older Taiwanese adults, healthcare reforms must aim to increase social inclusion levels through a better understanding of five factors at both the service provider and individual levels: 1) knowledge of service provisions, 2) depression, 3) individual autonomy, 4) types of care home, and 5) gender-sensitive practice. Taiwan faces the world's top aging rate over the next 8 years, making long-term care a priority for all populations, including the 16 indigenous groups who live primarily in the mountains and have different cultural practices than mainstream Taiwanese people. To examine how home care services are coordinated, managed, and delivered to the indigenous populations, we interviewed 10 public care managers and analyzed the interview content to assess their work experiences with home care workers and indigenous users in 2016. The research revealed four findings: (1) Home care utilization patterns and attitudes were different between the rural indigenous and non-indigenous populations; (2) home care utilization was limited by cultural, economic, and language challenges; (3) home care workers faced cultural and socio-structural challenges; and (4) policy and service provisions were rigid, without the socio-structural flexibility needed to accommodate the indigenous culture. A more efficient model will require the collaboration of public care managers, home care workers, and indigenous families to create a fair-coordinated plan. As Taiwan launches the Ten-year Long-Term Care Plan 2.0, a one-stop service delivery center to integrate care options and provide services for people of indigenous backgrounds is a must. We tested the applicability of syndemic theory to men who have sex with men (MSM) in Taiwan. Of 200 MSM (mean age = 27.1 years) surveyed, the majority (54%) experienced at least one syndemic burden due to problem drug use, intimate partner violence, or HIV stigma. In multivariable analysis, MSM with one or more syndemic burdens had greater than threefold higher odds of being HIV-positive. The impact of co-occurring psychosocial health conditions on HIV infection among MSM in Taiwan indicates the importance of identifying and engaging HIV-positive MSM in effective treatment, and implementing interventions more broadly to decrease syndemic burden. Health issues common among older adults living in institution settings include poor life satisfaction and depression conditions. Engagement in appropriate group reminiscence therapy programs could alleviate these health issues among older adults in long-term care institutions. This study tested the effectiveness of a structured group reminiscence therapy protocol on the life satisfaction of institutionalized older adults. A quasi-experimental design was applied. A convenience sample of older adults was drawn from two nursing homes in southern Taiwan. Participants were assigned to intervention or control groups based on the nursing homes they attended. The participants in the intervention group carried out group reminiscence therapy for 8 weeks in addition to their daily activities. The participants in the control group maintained their daily activities. Both groups were evaluated using a life-satisfaction scale including two aspects of life worries and situations in weeks 1, 8, and 12. The overall life satisfaction increased significantly over time for the intervention group compared to the control group from week 1 to week 8. Documents, interviews, and observation notes were used to analyze 19 Taiwanese elementary school English teachers' professional identity construction through artifacts and tools. Recently, some studies proposed methods to promote socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL) level within a team because high SSRL levels enable an effective collaboration. Meanwhile, several studies also proposed methods in online collaboration to enhance individual self-regulated learning (SRL). Notably, most existing studies focused on proposing methods and tools either for enhancing SSRL level within a team or for enhancing individual SRL. A computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) environment with proper supports is promising for simultaneously enhancing the SSRL level within a team and individual SRL because SSRL and SRL have an inseparable relation and mutually influence during collaborative process. Based on the existing principles and theories, this work adopts the supports of group awareness and peer evaluation in CSCL with project-based learning. Group awareness (GA) can reveal collaborative behaviour of group members and regulate their participation while peer assessment (PE), which can appraise member’s contribution, can encourage individual responsibility and refine regulatory strategies. This study finds that the proposed group awareness and peer assessment (GAPE) (i.e. the experimental class) moderately reduces the free-rider effect and enhanced SSRL level and individual SRL, compared with NO-GAPE (i.e. the control group). Continuous elderly learning activities not only empower elderly populations’ knowledge about health but also enhance these populations’ social connections and social abilities, which can enhance their overall quality of life. Geographic accessibility is a determinant factor for elderly participation in social activities. In this study, we proposed six measurement methods and employed the Gini coefficient to discuss the geographic accessibility and geographic inequality of community-based elderly learning resources. This study provides three methodological contributions for future research. First, we propose an origin-destination cost matrix analysis that incorporates a post-pruning technique. Applying this technique allows for the consideration of policy restrictions in relation to resource utilization. This approach also contributes to the ability to obtain a reliable assessment of the accessibility of resources. Second, this study proposes a new, more direct and convenient, method of calculating the Gini coefficient. Third, we find that the different distance-decay index β indicates the impact of distance factors on the efficiency of resource utilization. The distance-decay index β should carefully discern when distance is under 1 km. These results indicate that assessing accessibility does not only consider length and traffic distance but also requires a deliberate and weighted calculating process depending on the distance, elderly demand population, and supply capacities of learning centers. Although our study focuses on Taiwanese cases, our methodologies and results illustrate possibilities for other contributions that assess geographic accessibility and resource-allocation inequality for elderly learning policy planning and implementation. Narratives are a pervasive form of discourse and a rich source for exploring a range of language and cognitive skills. The limited research base to date suggests that narratives generated using aided communication may be structurally simple, and that features of cohesion and reference may be lacking. This study reports on the analysis of narratives generated in interactions involving aided communication in response to short, silent, video vignettes depicting events with unintended or unexpected consequences. Two measures were applied to the data: the Narrative Scoring Scheme and the Narrative Analysis Profile. A total of 15 participants who used aided communication interacted with three different communication partners (peers, parents, professionals) relaying narratives about three video events. Their narratives were evaluated with reference to narratives of 15 peers with typical development in response to the same short videos and to the narratives that were interpreted by their communication partners. Overall, the narratives generated using aided communication were shorter and less complete than those of the speaking peers, but they incorporated many similar elements. Topic maintenance and inclusion of scene-setting elements were consistent strengths. Communication partners offered rich interpretations of aided narratives. Relative to the aided narratives, these interpreted narratives were typically structurally more complete and cohesive and many incorporated more elaborated semantic content. Vocabulary learning reflects the language experiences of the child, both in typical and atypical development, although the vocabulary development of children who use aided communication may differ from children who use natural speech. This study compared the performance of children using aided communication with that of peers using natural speech on two measures of vocabulary knowledge: comprehension of graphic symbols and labeling of common objects. There were 92 participants not considered intellectually disabled in the aided group. The reference group consisted of 60 participants without known disorders. The comprehension task consisted of 63 items presented individually in each participant’s graphic system, together with four colored line drawings. Participants were required to indicate which drawing corresponded to the symbol. In the expressive labelling task, 20 common objects presented in drawings had to be named. Both groups indicated the correct drawing for most of the items in the comprehension tasks, with a small advantage for the reference group. The reference group named most objects quickly and accurately, demonstrating that the objects were common and easily named. The aided language group named the majority correctly and in addition used a variety of naming strategies; they required more time than the reference group. This study examines the effect of temporal psychological distance on travellers’ reliance on three types of word-of-mouth (WOM): traditional WOM (tWOM), social media WOM (SNS-WOM), and online review WOM (OR-WOM) in the search for information related to the relaxation, excitement, cost level, and safety destination image attributes. High and low temporal distance was manipulated using distances of 12 months and 2 months, respectively. A series oft-tests of 283 valid responses (155 and 128 for the 12-month and 2-month scenarios, respectively) shows a significant difference in reliance on tWOM when respondents sought safety attribute information, for SNS-WOM when respondents sought relaxation and safety attribute information, and for OR-WOM when respondents sought relaxation attribute information. Thus, this study shows that in terms of temporal distance, WOM is not a homogeneous block. They have sufficiently different characteristics (e.g. level of tie strength and synchronous/asynchronous modes), which, when they interact with the nature of the destination attributes, results in differing reliance on the three types of WOM under various temporal distances. Background: Transnational marriage-based immigrant women in Taiwan have moved to a country where alcohol use is prevalent and they face the challenge of adaptation into a new society, which could influence their drinking behavior. Objectives: To describe the prevalence of alcohol drinking and examine factors associated with drinking patterns among immigrant women in Taiwan. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional questionnaire survey and data were collected from June through November in 2013. Convenience samples of 757 immigrant women were recruited across Taiwan. Alcohol use patterns during the past year were divided into abstinent, low-risk drinking, and hazardous drinking based on the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test. Measures included subject characteristics, exposure to cigarettes and alcohol, acculturation level, and perceived stress. Results: The prevalence of drinking during the past year among immigrant women was 29.9% (low-risk drinking 27.6% and hazardous drinking: 2.3%). Multinomial logistic regression showed that women who were employed, who smoked, whose husbands drank, and who interacted with Taiwanese friends frequently were significantly more likely to be in the low-risk drinking group compared with the abstinent group. Women who were divorced/widowed, who had low education levels, who smoked, and whose husbands drank were significantly more likely to be in the hazardous drinking group compared with the abstinent group. Conclusions: More acculturation in immigrant women as indicated by working and frequently interacting with friends in mainstream society was related to low-risk drinking behavior; adversities as indicated by loss of marriage and low education level were related to hazardous drinking behavior. Information and communication technology (ICT) tools are being increasingly used to facilitate teaching in educational institutions. This study examined the attitudes of students and instructors towards using ICT tools in management education. Immediately after conducting workshops that introduced 11 ICT tools used in classroom settings, questionnaires were administered to students and instructors from three public universities in Taiwan. Responses of 242 students and 46 instructors regarding 5 domains of ICT tools – feedback, classroom mobility, publishing, collaboration, and social media – were analysed to investigate their attitude towards the use of ICT. The results revealed that students perceived the ICT tools of collaboration and social media to be helpful in learning and in increasing their future employment; in addition, the teachers found these ICT tools to be useful. Therefore, by integrating collaboration and social media in teaching and course design, teachers can enhance student participation and link students’ learning to their future employment. The present study investigates Taiwanese college students’ perceptions of plagiarism. Specifically, this study seeks to explore how perceptive students pursuing higher education in Taiwan are in recognizing plagiaristic writing, in what terms they perceive source use in writing as appropriate and inappropriate, and view why plagiarism occurs. The study included 30 high- and 30 low-achieving students selected out of 396 students in English writing classes at a university in Taiwan. Drawing upon evidence from a writing exercise and individual interviews with these 60 Taiwanese college students, the present study identified a variety of reasons why students may plagiarize. Most of the students participating in the study had some basic understanding of plagiarism. They had some familiarity with the Western notion of plagiarism, but based on the writing exercise, more often than not they were not able to recognize plagiarism when it actually occurred. Students’ understanding was generally, but not entirely, consistent with their source use behavior. More than half of the students considered that plagiarism is a cultural issue. In this study, the means-end chain theory has been adopted as the theoretical basis to focus on the players of SimCity and The Sims (two of the most representative titles of the simulation game genre) as the subjects of the research. Through in-depth interviews conducted using the Soft Laddering approach, the study aims to examine the key attributes that would trigger learning results for players when playing games and the terminal values that the players would experience internally. The purpose of interprofessional collaboration is to bring better services for sexual assault victims. In order to avoid secondary victimisation and improve the quality of forensic examination and prosecution rate, a one-stop service has been developed recently in Taiwan. However, whether the collaboration is successful may depend on participants’ professional backgrounds and personal experiences and can be influenced by a number of factors. This study used the Index of Interdisciplinary Collaboration to examine the different perceptions of collaboration in team members and the related influences on collaboration. Surveys were conducted in 140 team members including social workers, doctors, nurses, and police officers. The result indicated that collaboration was perceived differently in different professionals and significantly lower by social workers in the domain of interdependence and reflection on process. Factors such as professional roles, structural characteristics, personal characteristics, and history of collaboration were positively associated with the overall perception of collaboration. Only structural and personal characteristics predicted the type of profession. This study highlights the importance to acknowledge different experiences. Conclusion:Like NAC ameliorates hearing loss from acoustic trauma in the inner ear, NAC may also rescue hearing loss from sudden deafness confined to the inner ear. Objective:This study assesses the effect ofN-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) as a single therapy for sudden deafness. Methods:Thirty-five sudden deafness patients with neither systemic disorders nor central signs in electronystagmography were treated with NAC alone and assigned to Group A. For comparison, another 35 sudden deafness patients treated by corticosteroids and plasma expander were assigned to Group B. There were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of age, sex, laterality, and pre-treatment mean hearing level. All patients underwent an inner ear test battery comprising audiometry, and ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP), cervical VEMP (cVEMP), and caloric tests. Results:Groups A and B did not significantly differ in the pre-treatment mean hearing level, and percentages of abnormal oVEMP, cVEMP, and caloric tests, indicating that the involvement severity of sudden deafness between the two groups was similar. However, Group A (43 ± 27 dB) showed significantly greater mean hearing gain than Group B (21 ± 28 dB), and Group A (91%) revealed better improved rate of hearing than Group B (57%). Purpose:The study aimed to investigate comprehensively the determinants of the quality of life (QOL) of caregivers of children with cerebral palsy (CP) based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth (ICF-CY). Methods:A total of 167 children with CP (mean age 9.06 years, SD 2.61 years) and their caregivers (mean age 40.24 years, SD 5.43 years) participated in this study. The QOL of caregivers was measured with the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF-Taiwan version (WHOQOL-BREF-TW). The potential determinants of QOL were collected, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors from all dimensions of the ICF-CY and analysed using multiple regression models. Results:Four multiple regression models revealed that determinants of the QOL of caregivers of children with CP was multidimensional, encompassing child characteristics (age, type of CP, fine motor impairment, other diseases, behaviour and emotions, visual impairment, hearing impairment), caregiver characteristics (general mental health, parenting stress, marital status, family coping patterns, and socio-economic status), and environmental factors (child’s medication, school setting, and current rehabilitation service, caregiver’s spouse’s age, family life impacts, and domestic helper). Conclusions:Knowledge of the determinants of QOL could serve as a guide in a holistic approach to evaluation and intervention and help plan interventions targeted at these determinants to improve the QOL of caregivers of children with CP.Implications for RehabilitationCaregivers of children with CP had lower QOL, except the environment QOL.The QOL determinants of caregivers of children with CP are multidimensional, including child characteristics, caregiver characteristics, and environmental factors.In addition to child characteristics of severity of fine motor impairments and emotional and behavioural problems, caregiver characteristics of general mental health, parenting stress, and coping patterns, and environmental factors of family life impacts, and school setting demonstrated important relationships with caregiver QOL. Conclusion: Palatoplasty can significantly decrease their middle ear re-intubation rate with a relatively lower hazard ratio compared to children who underwent VTI only.Objectives: In children with cleft palate, questions remain about the overall effect of ventilation tube insertion (VTI) and palatoplasty for their OME. A large-scale study might offer more evidence for the roles of palatal surgery.Subjects and methods: This was a retrospective birth cohort study based upon a national database. We analyzed children born between 1999–2004 and diagnosed as cleft palate and/or lips. These children, according to their surgeries, were separated into two groups: (1) VTI only, and (2) VTI and palatoplasty. Kaplan-Meier analysis and log-rank test were used to calculate their cumulative tube re-insertion rates. Their hazard ratios of tube re-insertion were also analyzed.Results: In total, 1205 cleft children were collected, with 151 in the VTI only group and 1054 in the VTI + palatoplasty group. Ventilation tube re-insertion rates were significantly lower in the VTI + palatoplasty group (p = 0.002). The cumulative re-insertion rates also showed a significant difference (p = 0.001). This study investigates nontraditional students’ of English as a foreign language self-reports of the hypertext learning experience. It determines whether factors such as gender, age, proficiency level, and hypertext learning experience influence predicting hypertext reading achievement. The subjects of this study were 23 nontraditional English majors (9 males and 14 females). Their learning efficiency was rated as low to intermediate. The primary investigation found that students generally perceived that they should have control in operating the designed hypertext system because most did not find it difficult. In addition, students could accomplish the reading tasks more quickly and easily without much mental effort. Females, older adults, and low-proficiency learners expressed more positive feedback and willingness to use the hypertext system in future compared with the other groups, although no significant differences were observed among those variables on hypertext learning experience. Hypertext comprehension performance was significantly influenced only by the factor of proficiency level. Its impact was negative and moderate. Therefore, it is suggested that the use of hypertext system demonstrated the tendency to particularly improve low-proficiency learners’ reading comprehension. Background: The issue of home care for older people is concerned with availability of information. Aim: To compare delivery of electronic health record (EHR) in home care for older people. Methods: An applied-comparative library study was conducted in 2015. The study population included Canada, Australia, England, Denmark and Taiwan. Data were extracted from literature related to EHR on home care and older people. Results: The main functions included collection, documentation of lab and imaging results. Common data elements were demographic information, prescriptions and nursing observations. Security needs were identified according to the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Document Act, enacted in Canada and the Privacy Act 1988 in Australia. Conclusions: The basic functions of EHR are determined as collection, documentation and retrieval of information. It is recommended that legislation protects access to information on personal health and implementation of a national unique identifier applicable to shared data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
