Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a typical flavone-3-ol polyphenol containing eight free hydroxyl groups, is associated with a variety of bioactivities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antibacterial activities. However, the poor bioavailability of EGCG restricts its use. In this review, we discuss the processes involved in the absorption and metabolism of EGCG, with a focus on its metabolic interactions with the gut microbiota. Next, we summarize the bioactivities of some key metabolites, describe the biotransformation of EGCG by different microorganisms, and discuss its catabolism by specific bacteria. A deeper understanding of the absorption, metabolism, and biotransformation of EGCG may enable its disease-preventive and therapeutic properties to be better utilized. Diaspora movements are campaigns launched by migrant minorities who maintain allegiance to their homelands. This article investigates the recent mobilization of the Hongkonger, Thai, Burmese, and Ukrainian diasporas in Taiwan to understand the factors behind their tactical choices. While the existing literature pays more attention to the protester-government interaction to understand how movement leaders decide on their movement strategy, we contend that certain pre-existing characteristics of the diaspora communities matter more. The use of qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) leads us to conclude: (1) ethnic discrimination, migrants’ class position, and the host government’s support do not affect the tactical choices; (2) a sufficiently large community with available mobilizing networks makes it possible to recruit and collect resources entirely from ethnic compatriots (reach-in); (3) linkages to local civil society enable it to speak to a broader audience and activate local responses (reach-out). This article describes the ideological adaptation that occurred in China during the 1990s, when the reform of state-owned enterprises rearticulated the state-labor relationship. The market-oriented reform produced a series of meaning dislocations within the discursive field, departing from the traditional ideology of the party-state. By conducting discourse analysis on media reports published in the People's Daily, this article argues that the party-state deployed various discourse articulation practices to realize its ideological adaptation and maintain internal ideological consistency. Specifically, the party-state employed four types of 'interpretive packages' to reconcile the market reform's rationale with its own orthodox ideology, rearticulating the quadrilateral relationship among the workers, state enterprises, the party, and the government, as well as their roles within this ideological tradition. Discourse articulation has contributed greatly to the construction of a hegemony that constrains and fixes the new meanings stemming from the reform. However, it has also generated unintended consequences, such as conflicts among various discourse practices. The findings provide us with a pathway to understand how authoritarian states stabilize their ideology during periods of accelerated change and allow us to rethink the role of ideology in states' transformation, a topic that could be explored in future studies. This study investigated the impact of pre-freezing techniques on the quality and storage stability of probiotics. Pediococcus acidilactici CCFM6432, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CN2018, and Bifidobacterium breve CCFM1025 were subjected to freezing at −80 °C and −196 °C using liquid nitrogen, respectively. The results indicated that liquid nitrogen pre-freezing did not cause cell death during the freezing phase. Following lyophilization, liquid nitrogen pre-freezing did not affect the survival rates of P. acidilactici CCFM6432 and L. plantarum CN2018; however, it significantly decreased the survival rate of B. breve CCFM1025 (p < 0.05). Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis revealed that liquid nitrogen pre-freezing increased the melting enthalpy of the cell suspension. A linear correlation between the bacterial cell survival rate and moisture content was observed, with survival rates at the pre-freezing temperature of −196 °C slightly lower than those at −80 °C. Liquid nitrogen granulation pre-freezing enhanced the storage stability of B. breve CCFM1025. This research offers valuable insights into the potential development of pre-freezing techniques for application in the food industry to enhance the quality and storage stability of probiotics. Benzene is widely recognized as a potential carcinogen. Furthermore, the deficiency of specific nutrients may render individuals more vulnerable to cancer. For instance, β-cryptoxanthin, which possesses anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer properties, has been identified as one such nutrient. Elevated benzene levels and reduced β-cryptoxanthin levels are reportedly correlated with an augmented susceptibility to cancer. To date, whether these 2 substances are linked with one another in the above correlation is yet to be determined. This study included 1358 participants with data on the serum concentration of β-cryptoxanthin as well as benzene and its derivatives. The data were sourced from the 2003–2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, a cross-sectional survey of the noninstitutionalized US population. Headspace solid-phase microextraction with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry was used to measure serum benzene and its derivatives, while high-performance liquid chromatography using multiwavelength photodiode-array absorbance detection was employed to quantify serum β-cryptoxanthin. In this study, male and female participants showed average β-cryptoxanthin levels of 9.10 ± 6.35 and 9.92 ± 8.95 ug/dL, respectively (p = 0.049). Styrene exhibited the strongest correlation with the change in β-cryptoxanthin concentration (β = −3.30, p for trend <0.001) upon comparing highest-quartile participants with those in the lowest quartile, followed by benzene (β = −2.95, p for trend <0.001), toluene (β = −2.90, p for trend <0.001), and ethylbenzene (β = −1.43, p for trend = 0.09). Subgroup analysis by sex displayed a statistically significant negative correlation of β-cryptoxanthin with benzene, styrene, and toluene in both the unadjusted and multivariate-adjusted models. The sera of noninstitutionalized US individuals exhibit a negative association of β-cryptoxanthin levels with benzene and its derivatives. Styrene demonstrates the strongest link with a substantial decline in serum β-cryptoxanthin levels, followed by benzene, toluene, and ethylbenzene. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the inhibition effects of Ar/He/N2 on the H2-O2 system near the extended second explosion limit were investigated by ReaxFF simulations. It was found that all three inert gases can inhibit the reactions, delaying the initiation reaction, and prolonging ignition delay since the generation and consumption of free radicals such as HO2 and OH were suppressed. Further, the inhibitory effect has the correlation of Ar > He > N2. The inhibitory effect of Ar is more pronounced compared to He due to the bigger effective radius and physical mass. Moreover, the addition of N2 introduced extra initiation reaction (H2 + N2 → NNH + H) and generated additional intermediate products such as NNH and N2OH, which result in the weakest inhibitory effect. Compared to diatomic inhibitors (e.g., N2), the monatomic inhibitors such as Ar and He exhibit stronger inhibitory effects on the hydroxide reaction under high pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common cancer in the world. Currently, chemotherapy and radiotherapy used to treat CRC exhibit many side effects, hence, it is an urgent need to design effective therapies to prevent and treat CRC. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can regulate gut microbiota, intestinal immunity, and intestinal mechanical barrier, which is becoming a hot product for the prevention and treatment of CRC, whereas comprehensive reviews of their anti-CRC mechanisms are limited. This review systematically reveals the latest incidence, mortality, risk factors, and molecular mechanisms of CRC, then summarizes the roles of probiotics in alleviating CRC in animal and clinical studies and critically reviews the possible mechanisms by which these interventions exert their activities. It then shows the limitations in mechanisms and clinical studies, and the suggestions for future research are also put forward, which will play an important role in guiding and promoting the basic and clinical research of remising CRC by LAB and the development of LAB products. Bat–ball contacts are critical in the baseball hitting process. However, an effective training method for increasing the impact perception of a bat–ball contact is currently unavailable. Although not widely used, hitting a stationary weighted baseball can be an appropriate method for batters to simulate the perception of hitting a moving baseball. Therefore, swing velocity, wrist vibration, and forearm muscle activation for hitting stationary weighted, stationary regulation, and pitched baseballs were investigated in this study. Twelve position players hit a stationary weighted, stationary regulation, and pitched baseball at a speed of 70.28 ± 3.84 km/h in a random order. The swing velocity, wrist vibration, forearm muscle activation, and co-contraction ratio during hitting phases were analysed. The results indicated that the swing velocity during each specific phase demonstrated no significant differences between the different conditions. Hitting weighted and pitched baseballs caused higher wrist vibration, muscle activation, and co-contraction ratio during the contact phase than hitting regulation balls (p < 0.05). The conclusion was that hitting weighted baseballs could mimic the impact condition of hitting pitched baseballs without changing the pattern of swing velocity, which suggested that this method has potential as a hitting drill for improving hitting perception at bat–ball contact. Coronary post-mortem computed tomography angiography (coronary PMCTA) is a non-invasive method to evaluate the coronary artery in the forensic practice. A traditional method is to insert a urinary catheter through the carotid artery. In this study, we performed the coronary PMCTA by inserting a pigtail catheter through the femoral artery and connecting the catheter to a high-pressure syringe. We report the efficacy of this technique and factors influencing its performance, including the position of the catheter tip, aortic gas, high-pressure injector, and location of skin puncture. A total of 14 cadavers were included in our study. Two cadavers with coronary artery occlusions were identified in the PMCTA, which were confirmed by the autopsy reports. In addition, we found that adequate imaging of all the branches of the left and right coronary arteries could be achieved when the catheter tip was located in the ascending aorta around the aortic valve. Gas in the aorta could affect the image acquisitions, which could be avoided by priming the catheter with normal saline and changing the cadaver positions. The femoral artery insertion of the pigtail catheter with a high-pressure injector could achieve satisfactory images without causing obvious disfiguration of the cadavers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Effective physician-patient communication builds robust physician-patient relationships and reduces medical disputes. However, much is unknown about the differences that exist in the communication behaviors of physicians in different departments. Using a mixed-methods research approach, the researchers used Roter Interaction Analysis System to uncover the communication behaviors of internists, surgeons, family physicians, and emergency physicians at a regional hospital in Taiwan. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the communication experiences of 20 physicians from the internal medicine, surgery, family medicine, and emergency departments. The characteristics were presented through descriptive statistics, bar charts, and dendrograms. Physician-patient communications consisted of four dimensions, 10 factors, and 31 behaviors. The characteristics are as follows: (1) Internists need to improve their overall performance in terms of physician-patient communication behaviors; (2) Surgeons performed well in building relationships through non-verbal methods; (3) Family physicians excelled in facilitation and patient activation. (4) Emergency physicians performed well in patient education and counseling. The characteristics of the aforementioned communication behaviors among internists, surgeons, family physicians, and emergency physicians can be used to construct indicators of physicianpatient communication in each department and to develop patient-centered healthcare services in the future. Objectives: This study aims to examine the association between audiobook use and the mental health of older adults. Methods: Data were from the 2018 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey(CLASS 2018). The study utilized multiple linear regression to examine the association between audiobook use and the mental health of older adults. Robustness and heterogeneity analyses were conducted to validate the findings. Mediation analysis was employed to assess the mediating role of social adaptation in the relationship between audiobook use and mental health. Results: The study revealed a significant positive association between audiobook use and the mental health of older adults. Further mediation analysis indicated that social adaptation played a mediating role in this relationship. Conclusion: These findings underscore the potential of audiobooks as a valuable tool for promoting the mental health of older individuals. Mushroom is a sustainable food option and a meat substitute which yet needs some strategies to enhance sensory attributes. Especially, their taste characteristics (nonvolatile taste components: soluble sugars, organic acids, free amino acids, and 5'-nucleotides) can vary significantly due to operating conditions and parameters during different stages from farm to fork. This review is aimed to provide an overall view of the determined effects of operating conditions and parameters for mushroom taste attributes, suggestions for future research from lacking variables, and some recommendations for improving the taste perception of mushrooms. Taste compounds of mushrooms alter differently based on cultivation (species, cultivation or maturity stage, substrate composition, part, grade, mycelium strain), cooking (cooking method, time, temperature), preservation, and post-harvest storage conditions (drying parameters, pretreatment, preservation method, gamma irradiation, packaging, storage time and temperature). The dominant tastes of mushrooms given by sweet and umami taste active substances can be enhanced significantly with proper control of parameters during cultivation, cooking, drying, or post-harvest storage. The parameters and variations organized in this review can be used to develop a mathematical model for obtaining optimum taste attributes of mushrooms and mushroom-based meat alternatives and to discover the variables of mushroom species not studied yet. Interface icons are often scaled to adapt to different displays in cross-device collaborations. However, adaptive scaling of icons may cause perceptual bias in how icon arrays are visually perceived, which reduces usability and coherent user experience. This article presents an empirical study that evaluates the perceptual bias in the consistency of icon spacing and size caused by adaptive scaling. Then the impact of various visual features of icons (i.e., the border shape, polarity, and composition) on the perceptual bias are investigated. In this study, we found that cross-device scaling of icons causes a perceptual bias in the consistency of icon spacing and size. The shape of the icon border has a significant difference in the perceived spacing of icons, and the bias of the round shape is smaller than that of the square shape. Moreover, changing the icon polarity can affect the perceptual bias of consistency in icon size. Identifying effective therapeutic targets is of great significance for improving early diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis. This study aims to explore the role of LINC00265 in sepsis. This is a retrospective study based on data collected from sepsis patients in 2017–2018. The basic clinical information of all subjects were collected and the survival of the sepsis patients within 28 days was monitored. The expression of LINC00265 was detected by qPCR. Receiver operating characteristics and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic value of LINC00265 in patients with sepsiss. Compared with the healthy population, the expression of LINC00265 was significantly upregulated in patients with sepsis distinguishing them from healthy individuals. This expression was patients with sepsis positively correlated with the APACHEII score, tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-8, and IL-17, and negatively correlated with IL-10. LINC00265 expression was upregulated in the sepsis death group, predicting a lower rate in patients with patients with sepsis. The higher expression of LINC00265 was correlated with lower cumulative patient sursvival. LINC00265 is upregulated in patients with sepsis, and its high expression predicts increased disease severity, heightened inflammation, and a poorer prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by the destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic β cell. It contributes to high mortality, frequent diabetic complications, poor quality of life in patients and also puts a significant economic burden on health care systems. Therefore, the development of new therapeutic strategies is urgently needed. Recently, certain dietary compounds with potential applications in food industry, particularly polyphenols and polysaccharides, have gained increasing attention with their prominent anti-diabetic effects on T1D by modulating β cell function, the gut microbiota and/or the immune system. In this review, we critically discuss the recent findings of several dietary polyphenols and polysaccharides with the potential to protect against T1D and the underlying anti-diabetic mechanisms. More importantly, we highlight the current trends, major issues, and future directions of industrial production of polyphenols- and polysaccharides-based functional foods for preventing or delaying T1D. Teaching statistics to undergraduate business students is an enduring challenge, often due to student apprehension and low understanding of relevance. The Data to Decision Project is an approach designed to address this challenge. At the onset of an introductory statistics course, fifty-two students received instruction on the Define, Collect, Organize, Visualize and Analyze (DCOVA) framework to integrate data with business-related decision-making. Concurrent with this instruction, students selected and completed individual projects, using the DCOVA framework to explore their individual decisions. Quantitative and qualitative methods indicated that this approach positively impacted the students' ability to apply statistics, as well as their attitudes regarding their statistics abilities. This study purposed to identify the better accelerometer location for monitoring badminton sports training load by investigating the correlation between internal (HR, training impulse [TRIMP]) training load and external (acceleration, player load [PL]) training loads measured from 5 different body locations. Twelve college-level badminton athletes wore a HR transmitter belt and five accelerometers fixed on both hands, legs, and lower back while performing continuous three-minute training of four badminton skills including backhand serve (BS), net shot (NS), footwork training (FT), and jump smash (JS). Results showed PL at the five locations were significantly related to TRIMP (r = 0.570–0.843, p < 0.05), in which PL at lower back has highest Pearson (r = 0.843) and partial (r = 0.366) correlated to TRIMP (p < 0.05). Base on the stepwise multiple regression, PL at lower back and racket hand explained 88% of the variance of TRIMP (R2 = 0.879). In conclusion, lower back is an idea location for accelerometer to monitor overall external training load in badminton if considering one accelerometer location, while combining PL at the lower back and racket hand can predict 88% of the variation of the internal training load. Zing-Yang Kuo (1898–1970), hailed as China's behaviorist psychologist, earned "Out-Watsons Mr. Watson" in the international anti-instinct movement. His contributions to the field on behavioral neuroembryology (1929–1939) are often overlooked in comparison to his achievements in psychology. We retrieved the titles of all of Kuo's publications from 1929 to 1939 and examined those related to his research on the origins and development of embryonic behavioral ontogeny and the neural basis of embryonic behavior. Remarkably, Kuo concurrently focused on embryos during the same period as North American neuroembryologists. He maintained an independent stance in the debate over the sequence of behavioral ontogeny, represented by the embryonic neuroscientists Coghill and Windle, and critically pointed out limitations in research on both sides of the debate. Drawing from his experiments with chicken embryos, Kuo proposed the theory of behavioral epigenesis, which attempted to end the nature–nurture dichotomy and promote the transformation of the research path of behavioral embryology from elementary physiological anatomy toward a deep "comprehensive science." Kuo's achievements directly laid the foundation for the interdisciplinary field of developmental psychobiology, constructing a new conceptual framework for the systematic analysis of behavioral development and promoting the establishment and development of a new approach to epiphenotype epigenetics. Aging, a natural and inevitable physiological process, is the primary risk factor for all age-related diseases; it severely threatens the health of individuals and places a heavy burden on the public health-care system. Thus, strategies to extend the lifespan and prevent and treat age-related diseases have been gaining increasing scientific interest. Anthocyanins (ACNs) are a subclass of flavonoids widely distributed in fruits and vegetables. Growing evidence suggests that ACNs delay aging and relieve age-related diseases. However, owing to the low bioavailability of ACNs, their gut metabolites have been proposed to play a critical role in mediating health benefits. In this review, we introduce the biological fate of ACNs after consumption and highlight ACNs metabolites (phenolic acids) from intestinal microorganisms. Additionally, ACNs and gut metabolites exhibit outstanding anti-aging ability in Caenorhabditis elegans, Drosophila melanogaster, and mouse models, probably associated with increasing antioxidation, anti-inflammation, protein homeostasis, antiglycation, mitochondrial function, and inhibition of insulin/IGF-1 signaling (IIS). ACNs and gut metabolites have great application prospects as functional foods and drugs to delay aging and manage age-related diseases. Further investigation should focus on the interaction between ACNs and gut microbiota, including clarifying the complex metabolic pathway and maximizing the health effects of ACNs. Hyperuricemia is closely linked with an increased risk of developing hypertension, diabetes, renal failure and other metabolic syndromes. Probiotics, bioactive compounds and dietary patterns are safe cost-efficient ways to control hyperuricemia, whereas comprehensive reviews of their anti-hyperuricemic mechanisms are limited. This review summarizes the roles of probiotics, bioactive compounds and dietary patterns in treating hyperuricemia and critically reviews the possible mechanisms by which these interventions exert their activities. The dietary patterns are closely related to the occurrence of hyperuricemia through the indirect action of gut microbiota or the direct effects of host purine metabolism. The Mediterranean and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension diets help reduce serum uric acid concentrations and thus prevent hyperuricemia. Meanwhile, probiotics alleviate hyperuricemia by ways of absorbing purine, restoring gut microbiota dysbiosis and inhibiting xanthine oxidase (XO) activity. Bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, peptides and alkaloids exert various anti-hyperuricemic effects, by regulating urate transporters, blocking the active sites of XO and inhibiting the toll-like receptor 4/nuclear factor kappa B signaling pathway and NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 signaling pathway. This review will assist people with hyperuricemia to adopt a healthy diet and contribute to the application of natural products with anti-hyperuricemic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cyclic wetting and drying in expansive soil slopes results in the formation of desiccation cracks and irreversible structural changes which can cause substantial reduction in overall soil strength leading to slope instability. This study investigates the structural and crack development in a physical model of undisturbed expansive clay slope and small core sample subjected to five wet-dry cycles. The surface distribution and vertical extent of cracks in the slope model was measured during the various drying and drying cycles. The crack intensity factor, which quantifies surface cracks increased with increasing wet-dry cycles and became constant in the third cycle. Vertical cracks whose bases are connected by near horizontal cracks or cracks parallel to the slope developed to a maximum depth of 28 cm in the physical model. The shallow depth and orientation of these cracks along the slope may be a contributing factor for the shallow infinite slope failure in expansive soils. In addition, suction and water content measurements were made during various cycles. Changes in suction occurred to a depth of 28 cm, and the maximum suction increased with increasing cycle number. The southeast Sichuan in China is a key area for deep shale gas exploration. However, shale gas exploration in deep heterogeneous strata is greatly affected by in situ stress. Faults caused by tectonic movement strongly change the distribution of in situ stress. Inversion and prediction of in situ stress have become an important research hotspot in the field of resource exploitation. Based on the geological structure evolution and experimental data, the boundary stress iterative inversion method is used to inverse the in situ stress field of deep heterogeneous strata containing shale gas reservoirs, and the fracture characteristics around local fault are analyzed by fracture mechanics theory. The research shows that the stress field has the characteristics of non-uniform distribution under the influence of fault, and there is obvious stress concentration and deflection of principal stress direction around the fault. And magnitude and direction of stress are affected by the internal friction angle of the fault zone and the formation depth in different tectonic periods. Through the analysis and calculation of the plastic strain and stress intensity factors, it can be inferred that the cracks will propagate at the terminal portion of the fault. Stigma has heavily impacted People Living with HIV (PLWH). Limited studies report on how social support affects HIV-related stigma and perceived stress, especially in Myanmar. During first seven months of 2020, a random sample of 248 eligible PLWH were contacted from a private, closed Facebook group with more than 18,000 Myanmar people, where 90% of the members were PLWH. Variables collected included demographics data, perceived stress, social support, and HIV stigma. After controlling for the effects of demographic variables, the path from HIV stigma to perceived stress (direct effect β = 0.40) and though the mediation of social support was significant (indirect effect β = 0.014). However, the mediating effect of social support was non-significant between HIV stigma and perceived stress. This exploratory study shows that social support did not have the expected effect of decreasing perceived stress in PLWH in Myanmar. Interventions to reduce HIV stigma to decrease perceived stress should consider other strategies, e.g., spirituality-based practice, to reduce perceived stress in Myanmar PLWH. Latilactobacillus sakei is used extensively in industrial production and food fermentations. The species is primarily derived from fermented meat and vegetable products and is also found in human feces. Genomics and metabolomics have revealed unique metabolic pathways in L. sakei and molecular mechanisms underlying its competitive advantages in different habitats, which are mostly attributed to its flexible carbohydrate metabolism, cold tolerance, acid and salt tolerance, ability to cope with oxygen changes, and heme uptake. In recent years, probiotic effects of L. sakei and its metabolites have been identified, including the ability to effectively alleviate metabolic syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and atopic dermatitis. This review summarizes the genomic and metabolic characteristics of L. sakei and its metabolites and describes their applications, laying a foundation for their expanded use across the food and healthcare industries. Talc is a naturally hydrophobic mineral. Its separation from sulfide minerals is a tough issue in froth flotation. In this study, calcium lignosulphonate (CLS) was introduced as a talc depressant during sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) flotation of chalcopyrite. The micro-flotation findings showed that under pH 5.0–10.5, the combination application of CLS and SIBX achieved a selective flotation separation of chalcopyrite from talc. The results of zeta potential, contact angle, adsorption capacity and in-situ AFM deduced that both talc and chalcopyrite exhibited a favorable affinity toward CLS, and SIBX hardly changed the adsorption of CLS on talc surface, while significantly reduced that on chalcopyrite. The Ca2+ ions of CLS played a bridging role in connecting lignosulphonate (LS) anions and the negatively charged Si-O layers through electrostatic attraction, which transformed talc surface from hydrophobicity into hydrophilicity. The Cl− ions weakened the adsorption of LS anions on the Ca2+-modified talc surface, and the adsorption affinity of Na+ ion toward the Si-O layers was much weaker than that of Ca2+ ion. Thus, CLS exhibited the strongest depression against talc’s floatability, followed by CaCl2 + SLS (sodium lignosulphonate), and then SLS. SIBX chemisorbed on to chalcopyrite via forming the surface Cu-IBX complexes, which removed the adsorbed LS anions and recovered the floatability of chalcopyrite. The CLS-hydrophilized talc and SIBX-hydrophobized chalcopyrite exhibited the different surface wettability, and they both loaded negative charges, which prevented the aggregation of their particles, resulting in a highly efficient flotation separation chalcopyrite from talc. The research is based on an engineering project to develop an efficient and energy-saving sludge drying apparatus. A heat and mass transfer model was developed to understand the drying mechanism in a turbine thin-layer dryer. Numerical simulation was performed to investigate the changes in sludge content, temperature, and moisture content under different paddle angles. The results showed that the paddle angle of 45° provided the optimal effect of water evaporation and sludge conveying. Subsequently, a turbine thin-layer drying system was established and drying experiments were conducted to explore the influence of different operating parameters on the drying efficiency. The experimental drying results were compared with the simulation results, which showed that the developed model could predict the experimental results. The residence time experiment showed that the developed dryer was efficient in treating highly viscous sludge. The results of the orthogonal experiments showed that the heat source temperature and the rotating speed were the main influencing factors of the moisture content and energy consumption, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be applied to visualize endolymphatic hydrops (EH). To explore whether a 3-h time interval was feasible for clinical practice. We prospectively enrolled 15 patients with unilateral Meniere's disease, each of whom underwent delayed enhancement MRI scan of the inner ear after intravenous gadoteridol injection at a 3-h interval. The ears of these patients were divided into two groups (group A: the affected ears; group B: the unaffected ears). Among the two groups, the signal intensity in perilymphatic area of the basal turn of cochlea, the results of visual evaluations in the vestibule, cochlea and semicircular canal and the detection results of EH were compared. Regarding the signal intensity, a difference was found between group A and group B (p =.016). Besides, no difference was found between the visual evaluations in the vestibule, cochlea and semicircular canal of the two groups. Regarding the detection results of EH, group A (6 vestibules were undiagnosable; 8 cochleae were undiagnosable); group B (9 vestibules were undiagnosable; 10 cochleae were undiagnosable). Aims: Nerve growth factor is a well characterised neurotrophic factor that play a critical role in the survival, growth and differentiation of neurons both in central and peripheral nervous system. However, it is difficult for the conventional exogenous nerve growth factor administration delivery to the central nervous system due to the biological barrier in human bodies. Results: We validated a series of cell penetrating peptides and found that L-PenetraMax significantly enhanced the efficiency of recombinant human nerve growth factor entry into the rat retina. In the optic nerve crush mice model, eye drop administration of recombinant human nerve growth factor alone promoted retinal ganglion cell survival and axon regeneration at high dose, while the combination of recombinant human nerve growth factor with L-PenetraMax significantly enhanced the neuroprotective efficacy at lower dose, thus potentially enhancing the availability of recombinant human nerve growth factor eye drops in patients with optic neuropathy. Conclusions: This study provides the evidence that the noncovalent coadministration of recombinant human nerve growth factor with L-PenetraMax could be a potent strategy for the non-invasive and sustained ocular delivery of therapeutic proteins for improving the optic nerve injury. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) with high spatial resolution effectively maps detailed information about shallow sea depths. Properly selecting atmospheric correction (AC) methods is crucial to obtaining precise bathymetric information from satellite data. In this work, three different AC methods (FLAASH, 6S, and DOS) were applied to GaoFen-2 imagery in Lingyang Reef, South China Sea. Water depth retrieval models, such as single-band, multiband, and band ratio models, were established by 470 points of in-situ water depth data and used for evaluating the model performances. Additionally, the optimal model was applied to depth inversion. The results show that the multiband model based on four bands performs well in this study area with R2=0.736. The choice of AC methods significantly affects SDB, although acceptable results can be derived without these methods. Specifically, the DOS method has the highest inversion accuracy, with a mean relative error and root mean square error of 14.05% and 3.31 m, respectively. Furthermore, the inversion accuracy in various depth ranges may be primarily influenced by suspended sediment concentration and bottom-type uniformity. Recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the application of reinforcement learning (RL) to nonlinear system control. And many published studies have shown that reusing historical data can improve the learning efficiency of intelligent agents. However, reusing historical data leads to a large increase in the data to be processed. This paper proposes a novel adaptive law for the critic network in the RL framework to address this problem. The innovation of the proposed method is the introduction of an auxiliary matrix containing information about the historical estimation errors instead of the historical data itself. Moreover, the addition of the auxiliary matrix allows the persistent excitation (PE) conditions to be checked online. As a validation, the proposed approach is applied to a motor servo system containing unknown dynamics. Excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) is associated with quality of life and all-cause mortality in the end-stage renal disease population. This study aims to identify biomarkers and reveal the underlying mechanisms of EDS in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. A total of 48 nondiabetic continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients were assigned to the EDS group and the non-EDS group according to the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS) was used to identify the differential metabolites. Twenty-seven (male/female, 15/12; age, 60.1 ± 16.2 years) PD patients with ESS ≥ 10 were assigned to the EDS group, while twenty-one (male/female, 13/8; age, 57.9 ± 10.1 years) PD patients with ESS < 10 were defined as the non-EDS group. With UHPLC-Q-TOF/MS, 39 metabolites with significant differences between the two groups were found, 9 of which had good correlations with disease severity and were further classified into amino acid, lipid and organic acid metabolism. A total of 103 overlapping target proteins of the differential metabolites and EDS were found. Then, the EDS–metabolite–target network and the protein–protein interaction network were constructed. Inhalable messenger RNA (mRNA) has demonstrated great potential in therapy and vaccine development to confront various lung diseases. However, few gene vectors could overcome the airway mucus and intracellular barriers for successful pulmonary mRNA delivery. Apart from the low pulmonary gene delivery efficiency, nonnegligible toxicity is another common problem that impedes the clinical application of many non-viral vectors. PEGylated cationic peptide-based mRNA delivery vector is a prospective approach to enhance the pulmonary delivery efficacy and safety of aerosolized mRNA by oral inhalation administration. In this study, different lengths of hydrophilic PEG chains were covalently linked to an amphiphilic, water-soluble pH-responsive peptide, and the peptide/mRNA nano self-assemblies were characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The in vitro mRNA binding and release, cellular uptake, transfection, and cytotoxicity were studied, and finally, a proper PEGylated peptide with enhanced pulmonary mRNA delivery efficiency and improved safety in mice was identified. These results showed that a proper N-terminus PEGylation strategy using 12-monomer linear monodisperse PEG could significantly improve the mRNA transfection efficiency and biocompatibility of the non-PEGylated cationic peptide carrier, while a longer PEG chain modification adversely decreased the cellular uptake and transfection on A549 and HepG2 cells, emphasizing the importance of a proper PEG chain length selection. Moreover, the optimized PEGylated peptide showed a significantly enhanced mRNA pulmonary delivery efficiency and ameliorated safety profiles over the non-PEGylated peptide and LipofectamineTM 2000 in mice. Our results reveal that the PEGylated peptide could be a promising mRNA delivery vector candidate for inhaled mRNA vaccines and therapeutic applications for the prevention and treatment of different respiratory diseases in the future. To assess the epidemiology, treatment, and outcomes of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)–associated uveitis (JIA-U) in Taiwan. Retrospective, multicenter database. Totally, 44 (6.1%) of the 722 JIA patients had uveitis. The mean ages of JIA and JIA-U diagnosis were 10.7 and 11.1 years, respectively. JIA-U patients had more antinuclear antibody presence. Among JIA-U patients, 25 (56.8%) were male, 11 (25.0%) experienced any ocular complication, and 8 (18.2%) received ocular surgery. Inactivity lasting ≥6 months was achieved in 17 (38.6%) patients; however, 11 (25.0%) of those experienced reactivation with a mean of 624.7 days after achieving inactivity. Female had more ocular complications and surgeries. Late age at JIA-U diagnosis and male predominance were distinctive in Taiwan. For patients with inactivity lasting ≥ 6 months was achieved, they still required close follow-up due to the high reactivation rate within 2 years. Female had poorer ocular outcomes. Volatility is usually a proxy indicator for market variation or tendency, containing essential information for investors and policy-makers. This paper proposes a novel hybrid deep neural network model (HDNN) with temporal embedding for volatility forecasting. The main idea of our HDNN is that it encodes one-dimensional time-series data as two-dimensional GAF images, which enables the follow-up convolution neural network (CNN) to learn volatility-related feature mappings automatically. Specifically, HDNN adopts an elegant end-to-end learning paradigm for volatility forecasting, which consists of feature embedding and regression components. The feature embedding component explores the volatility-related temporal information from GAF images via the elaborate CNN in an underlying temporal embedding space. Then, the regression component takes these embedding vectors as input for volatility forecasting tasks. Finally, we examine the feasibility of HDNN on four synthetic GBM datasets and five real-world Stock Index datasets in terms of five regression metrics. The results demonstrate that HDNN has better performance in most cases than the baseline forecasting models of GARCH, EGACH, SVR, and NN. It confirms that the volatility-related temporal features extracted by HDNN indeed improve the forecasting ability. Many women are experiencing postpartum depression (PPD) after giving birth. How to recognize and intervene in high-risk PPD women early and effectively remains unknown. Our objective is to describe the latent trajectory groups of cognitive reactivity (CR) in perinatal women, and their relationship to demographic and disease-related factors, as well as investigate the associations with PPD. Data from 321 perinatal women who were evaluated in urban tertiary hospitals in China at three-time points: 32-35 weeks of pregnancy, 1 week postpartum, and 6 weeks postpartum. Latent class growth modeling was used to identify the trajectory patterns of CR and logistic regression was used to explore the association between demographic and disease-related factors, CR trajectories, and depression. Three trajectory groups were identified: the continuing deterioration group (17.2%), the postpartum deterioration group (22.1%), and the consistent resilient group (60.7%). Participants with a bachelor's degree or higher and with gestational diabetes diagnosis were more likely to be in the continuing deterioration group. Those who were from only-child families were more likely to be in the postpartum deterioration group. Women in the continuing deterioration group and postpartum deterioration group were more likely to experience PPD. Targeted interventions should be developed based on trajectory group of CR. College freshmen are special populations facing great challenges in adapting to the brand new environment, and their lifestyle and emotional states are worthy of attention. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, their screen time and prevalence of negative emotions were significantly increased, but few studies have focused on such situation of college freshmen and illustrated relevant mechanisms. Thus, based on a sample of Chinese college freshmen during the COVID-19 pandemic, the current study aimed to investigate the association between their screen time and negative emotions (depression, anxiety and stress), and further explore the mediating effects of sleep quality. Data from 2,014 college freshmen was analyzed. The screen time was self-reported by participants using predesigned questionnaires. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Chinese Version of Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) were used to assess sleep quality and emotional states, respectively. The mediation analysis was conducted to examine the meditation effect. Results indicated that participants with negative emotions tended to have longer daily screen time and worse sleep quality, sleep quality partially mediated the association between screen time and negative emotions.The critical role of sleep quality and related intervention measures should be recognized and implemented. Curcumin (CUR) is a natural hydrophobic compound, which is available in turmeric rhizome. It has several bioactivities including antioxidant, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, and other activities. Despite its medical and biological benefits, it is using in limitations because of its hydrophobicity and sensitivity. These unfavorable conditions further reduced the bioavailability (BA) and biological efficacy of CUR. This review summarizes the stability and BA of free- and encapsulated-CUR, as well as comprehensively discusses the potential biological activity of CUR-loaded various micro-/nano-encapsulation systems. The stability and BA of CUR can be improved via loading in different encapsulation systems, including nanoemulsions, liposomes, niosomes, biopolymer-based nanoparticles, nano-hydrogel, and others. Biopolymer-based nanoparticles (especially poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), zein, and chitosan) and nano-gels are the best carriers for encapsulating and delivering CUR. Both delivery systems are suitable because of their excellent functional properties such as high encapsulation efficiency, well-stability against unfavorable conditions, and can be coated using other encapsulation systems. Based on available evidences, encapsulated-CUR exerted greater biological activities especially anticancer (breast cancer), antioxidant, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective effects. The objective of a hop-on-hop-off sightseeing bus is to provide the highest accessibility to the most desirable attractions of the place. Four tourism cities worldwide, London, Vienna, Edinburgh, and Singapore, were studied to benchmark the system's spatial and non-spatial criteria. The head/tail breaks principle sets up the threshold to measure the popularity, and the space syntax measures to evaluate the accessibility. The primary goals for a sightseeing bus system should consider the benefits of the bus takers, the revenue and costs of system providers, and the marketing and competitiveness of local authorities. Hence the length and number of bus stops per route should be limited to no more than 1.5–2 hours per loop. The four accessibility measures for attractions were considered higher than the city's second-rank (M2) mean value. The results showed that in the optimizing process using the benchmarked criteria, the coverage ratio of Grade 1, 2, and 3 attractions was enhanced by 25%, 42%, and 20% higher, respectively, than the existing sightseeing bus system in Taipei City. This optimizing accessibility process should be transferable to other means by planners to increase the tourist visits, such as the bicycle system, shared scooters, and walking areas. Procyanidins (PCs) is member of the proanthocyanidins (or condensed tannins) class of flavonoids. They are oligomeric compounds, which can be formed from catechin and epicatechin molecules. PCs are abundant in our diet, including chocolate, apple, grapes, legumes, berries, peanuts, and others. Metabolic diseases (MD) are disorders that negatively alter the normal metabolic process, which can influence the ability of body cells to perform critical biochemical reactions (e.g. distribution of macronutrients such as proteins, fats, and carbohydrates). Obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia, nonalcohol fatty liver disease, etc. are examples of MD. Thus, this review briefly summarized the rich sources, pharmacokinetic properties, and clinical outcomes of PCs. This comprehensively discussed the potential role of PCs against MD. PCs are abundant in dietary fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and grains. Among all PCs sources, grape seeds, sorghum, chocolate, and apples have high concentrations. Based on available studies, PCs and PCs-rich foods have excellent biological effects against MD, e.g. antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-diabetic, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective effects. Among all effects of PCs, antioxidant, anti-obesity, and cardio-protectivity are promising. In conclusion, PCs or PC-rich food are promising bioactive compounds or components for the management of MD. The defect evolution of primary radiation damage in SiGe alloys induced by single (Si or Ge) and binary (Si and Ge) primary knock-on atoms (PKAs) under different temperatures was investigated and evaluated by molecular dynamics simulations. The interatomic potential function was established by combining Stillinger−Weber potential with Ziegler–Biersack–Littmark potential, and it was validated by the lattice parameter, melting point, and thermal conductivity. The spatiotemporal distributions of point defects (Frenkel defects and antisites) and the lattice temperature showed a distinct difference to the kinetic energy (1 keV and 10 keV), PKA type (Si and/or Ge), and temperature of the SiGe alloy (100, 300, and 500 K). The radiation tolerance of the SiGe alloy to specific radiation environments was deduced based on the simulation results of displacement damage in this work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Human-induced vibration serviceability often governs the dynamic design of modern footbridges. Many design specifications have been issued, applying different load models, response calculation strategies and comfort limits (three key aspects), which may inevitably cause inconsistent evaluation results for the same structure. It requires the comparison of specifications, and better practical suggestions proposed, to guide the vibration serviceability of footbridges. This article performs the most comprehensive evaluation of specification performance. It includes six current specifications: the UK NA, the HiVoSS guidelines, the Sétra guidelines, the ISO standard, the American guide and the Chinese standard. After comparison of the three key aspects, practical suggestions are proposed. Evaluations are made based on two recent long-span footbridges in China. The footbridges are found to be low in damping ratios and there exist low and close natural frequencies, even closely-spaced modes. Vibration serviceability assessments show obviously inconsistent results owing to differences in the three key aspects. Furthermore, owing to contributions of closely-space modes, the total structural responses are significantly larger than the single dominating mode (often applied in response calculations according to the specifications). Thus, the article suggests considering the contributions of multiple modes in designing for the vibration serviceability of long-span footbridges. Finally, considering large vibrations, mitigation measures are applied. Instead of applying external dampers, e.g. tuned mass dampers (which may add to the economic costs of the structure), effective vibration mitigation measures are suggested by changing structural parameters. Except for the traditionally applied wind-resistant cables, a steel box girder with infilled concrete is applied to the main girder, replacing the original design. Classical filtration equations incorporate microscopic parameters, which pose challenges when applied in industrial settings. Previous extensive research has established the impact of filter cake thickness and variations in filtration pressure on the filtration rate. Moreover, the thickness of the filter cake is influenced by various factors, such as the filtration chamber’s design dimensions and the coal slurry’s properties. Thus, by expressing the properties of the coal slurry at a macroscopic level, it becomes possible to achieve a macroscopic representation of the filtration rate. This study presents the derivation of a macroscopic filtration equation that relies on the viscosity of the filtrate. The derivation process is mainly based on Darcy’s law, analyzing the relationship between the permeability of each layer and the permeability of cake under constant pressure and explaining and analyzing the method of determining the equation parameters. A new furanone analog, (E)-2-(8,9-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethyldec-4-en-2-yl)-met-hylfuran-3(2H)-one (1), together with six known compounds, including two diterpenoids (2 and 3), one butyrolactone (4) and three isocoumarins (5–7), were isolated from a deep-sea fungus, Purpureocillium sp. SCSIO 06693. Among them, compound 1 existed as two tautomeric forms (1a and 1b) differing in configuration of the furan ring. The chemical structures were elucidated by the basis of spectroscopic evidences, including HRESIMS, NMR and optical rotation. Isolated compounds were evaluated for their cytotoxic, antiviral, antibacterial, antioxidant, acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) and pancreatic lipase (PL) enzyme inhibitory activities. Biological evaluation results revealed that compound 4 showed modest antioxidant activity against DPPH with IC50 value of 72.03 μM. Long processing time represents a serious challenge in hot air drying since it led to high energy consumption and quality deterioration. A synergistic pretreatment of artificial perforation and alcohol maceration (PAT) was proposed in this study to improve hot air drying of garlic. Samples without pretreated, perforated, and subjected to alcohol pretreatments were used as control. The results showed that PAT pretreatment significantly reduced the drying time and energy consumed by 36.67%. Analysis showed that the mechanisms underlying the highest drying rate of PAT pretreated sample included pre-dehydration, capillary flow promotion and cell permeability enhancement. Samples pretreated with PAT exhibited the highest whiteness value, minimum shrinkage, lowest brittleness, and especially the highest content of volatile components, which is essential for its application as a spice. The antioxidant activity, total phenolics and allicin content were low in the PAT samples compared with other samples.
