Individuals who experience social isolation or loneliness report poorer psychological wellbeing and increased mortality than those who are socially connected. Older culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) immigrants are a subgroup at greater risk of experiencing social isolation and loneliness. Many ethnic-focussed organizations in South Australia (SA) facilitate regular shared lunches, or "lunch clubs," to support older CALD immigrants. This study sought to understand the experiences of attending these lunch clubs, and the extent to which they influence perceived health and wellbeing of attendees. Four focus groups (n = 19) were held with individuals who regularly attended one of four cultural lunch clubs (Greek, Ukrainian, Chinese, Italian) in SA. Focus groups were conducted in English and participant's native language, with the assistance of accredited interpreters. Focus group transcripts were analyzed following a descriptive qualitative approach. Three themes were identified: A rare opportunity for social interaction, maintaining ties to culture in a foreign country, and fostering health and wellbeing. This study offers insight into lunch clubs as a potential intervention to reduce experiences of social isolation and loneliness in vulnerable populations. This study evaluated a food system literacy intervention, through participants' engagement in sustainable eating behaviors, and their perspectives on the intervention. The qualitative study used semi-structured interviews with nine University staff and students which were then thematically analyzed. Sustainable eating behavior, engagement in education and experiences of the course were influenced by the individual's stage of change in relation to the Transtheoretical Model (TTM). Most participants were in the post-contemplation stages of change prior to joining the intervention and were consequently, already engaged in sustainable eating. This study analyses the relationship between food choices and morality by exploring how Australian adults conceptualise and negotiate their sugar intake. Fifteen in-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted with English speaking adults residing in South Australia. Participants were purposively sampled from a national survey based on their sugar consumption levels, age and gender. The data were analysed using thematic analysis. Participants initially defined sugars as good or bad based on source, colour, texture, taste and impact of sugar on health. On being provided with evidence on amounts of sugar present in commonly consumed foods and drinks, participants redefined their perceptions to consider all sugars as bad sugars. This created moral challenges for the participants leading to two types of justifications for their own sugar consumption. One group of justifications drew on socially evaluative statements that participants used to present themselves as morally virtuous. Here sugar was considered as an essential source of energy and part of a balanced diet; limited to infrequent occasions such as celebrations, social gatherings and cultural practices; and as a cultural obligation. The second group of justifications located the source of morality within the individual and presented sugar intake as important for emotional and psychological wellbeing, and also as something that could be controlled by taking responsibility. There were no differences in discourses between low and high sugar consumers. This study provides new insights on how Australians conceptualise sugar in diet and make consumption decisions, which are important for influencing sugar consumption at a societal level. This article is part of a broader interdisciplinary project investigating the historical, social, and cultural contexts behind individual and collective differences in taste and consumption. It offers a comparative historical study of nonalcoholic beverage (NAB) consumption in Australia and Japan. Australia and Japan are among the largest NAB consumers in the world, and they have a similar history of progression from brewed tea as the main beverage consumed at meals and between meals, to a widespread consumption of bottled beverages. Yet in the contemporary context, both consumer behavior and its impact on nutrition health differ significantly in the two countries. We compare the Australian case, where "soft drinks" are equated with sugar-sweetened beverages, seen as contributing to the global rise in obesity, with thecase of Japan, where sugar-sweetened sodas are widely available, but people also consume large amounts of cold bottled green teas and herbal teas, that are not just "sugarless" but are not sweet at all. We propose that comparing the NAB consumption cultures of Japan and Australia offers us valuable insight into the importance of the cultural dimension of consumption and nutrition health, and the need to consider it when formulating policy. In the face of the ‘obesity epidemic’ public health has largely failed to engage with the human pleasures that surround eating. Pleasures are often linked to vulnerabilities and frailties that are part of being human. We argue in this paper that leaving human vulnerabilities and the pleasures that haunt them under-acknowledged and under-examined within public health contributes to the problems that public health tries to solve. While in some quarters debates revolve around the best ways of encouraging people to become responsible for and modify their own behaviour, the well-documented centuries of struggle with managing human vulnerabilities and pleasures helps to explain why this is no easy task. The mantra of restraint, reason, and rationality is very limited in the face of the importance of some pleasures, even small ones, in human lives. In unequal societies, people have unequal access to pleasures. People are presented with a landscape of temptation, encouraged to consume, and then unequally admonished for indulging according to their means. Understanding and democratising pleasures will involve public health grappling with pleasures, and all those concerned with health inequity asking hard questions about ethics, morality, and intervention. This article explores why some Greek immigrants to Australia continue to adhere to a traditional Mediterranean diet whereas others have adopted eating behaviors characteristic of a less healthy “Australian” diet. Twelve qualitative interviews were conducted and comparisons made between individuals consuming more (n = 6) and less traditional diets (n = 6). The level of adherence to the diet was previously assessed by a diet score in a separate quantitative study (MEDIS-Australia) from which the subset of 12 participants for the present study was recruited. Analysis revealed that maintenance of a strong ethnic identity offers a pathway through which individuals retain dietary practices of their homeland. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this article we examine how and why the media construct food risks, from the perspective of ‘media actors’ (people involved in different types of media) using data from 30 interviews conducted in 2013 with media actors from Australia and the United Kingdom. In modern society, many risks are invisible and are brought to the attention of the public through representations in the mass media. This is particularly relevant for food safety, where the widening gap between producers and consumers in the developed world has increased the need for consumer trust in the food supply. We show the importance of newsworthiness in construction of media stories about food risk using Beck’s ideas on cosmopolitan risk to interpret the data. We note the ways in which the strategies that media actors use to construct stories about food risk amplify the risk posed potentially creating consumer anxiety about the safety of the food system. It is important for food regulators and public health professionals to be aware of this anxiety when presenting information about a food incident so that they can target their message accordingly to decrease anxiety. The benefits of community-based food systems (CFSs) are well documented; however, evidence suggests limited access for socioeconomically disadvantaged people. Focus groups with low-socioeconomic status (SES) individuals explored enablers and barriers to using CFSs and potential modifications to enhance their participation. Participants believed that CFSs must improve their affordability and convenience and provide more information to enhance access by low-SES groups. Participant-generated strategies addressed each of these issues. CFSs will likely require a suite of strategies to attract low-SES patrons; however, these must be compatible with other goals integral to CFSs to ensure their sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the past decades, public health has increasingly addressed what has been called the children's obesity 'epidemic', most notably through large-scale initiatives promoting physical activity. Through a discourse analysis the current paper critically examines such efforts in Canadian and Australian public health. Public health websites in Canada and Australia were examined for information concerning children's health, physical activity and obesity and explored for how these issues were represented in the discourse. Bacchi's (2009) 'What's the problem represented to be?' approach to discourse analysis guided our interrogation of the taken-for-granted assumptions underlying Canadian and Australian public health discourse, the ideological and political influences involved in its construction, and the knowledge base upon which it rests. Formal affiliation or subscription to a religious group presents an additional element or layer of trust that people negotiate throughout their experiences in purchasing and consuming food. This paper reports qualitative findings from an Australian pilot study of food and consumer trust, derived from in-depth interviews with nineteen participants across four religious groups. The grounded theory approach reveals that religion is, in varying degrees, an important arbiter of trust in food. The data also illustrate the diverse management of religious certification and dietary norms, as well as the unique content and character of foods that are prohibited among Jewish, Hindu, Muslim and Buddhist devotees. Food security is an evolving concept with various definitions and associated meanings. The way food security is understood by policy-makers impacts on how it gets addressed in public policy. This research uses an interpretive approach to uncover how food security is represented by stakeholders. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 24 stakeholders in South Australia between June and September 2010. The findings reveal four dominant representations for food security that locate responsibility for the issue across different stakeholders, namely individuals, governments, communities and private enterprise. These representations hold different underlying assumptions about the role of government in addressing the issue; the neo-liberal perspective supports a reduced role for government whereas the social determinants of health perspective calls for greater government intervention. Food security activists may need a greater awareness of how they represent the issue in order to change public policy action in this area. International research demonstrates diminishing trust in the food supply associated with food scares which undermine trust in expert advice. Even though Australia has not experienced major food scares, there is evidence of diminishing trust in the food supply. Interviews were conducted with 47 South Australian food shoppers from high (n = 17) and low (n = 16) socio-economic regions of Adelaide and from rural South Australia (n = 14) about food governance and trust in the Australian food supply. Participants display a high level of trust in the food supply associated with a perception that Australian food is safe; a lack of exposure to food risks; and trust in personal food safety practices. The media was the only factor which created distrust in the food system. Other participants express confidence in the food supply where confidence is understood as a lack of reflection. Contrary to concepts of reflexive modernisation which presume an increasing awareness of risk and placement of trust as a means of reducing uncertainly, participants adopt an ‘innocent until proven guilty’ approach displaying little knowledge or interest in knowing about food regulation relying instead on routine food safety practices as a means of managing uncertainty. Single parent households experience periods of food insecurity more frequently than other Australian families. Despite elevated risk, many single parents achieve food security with limited means. This article applies and evaluates the utility of the livelihoods framework approach as a tool for understanding food insecurity in this population and generating relevant policy recommendations. The approach is adapted here to provide insight into the skills, strategies and resource individuals use to attain or strive for food security. The framework incorporates these individual capabilities into a model of the social, economic and political structures and processes through which individuals navigate to attain food security. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with single parents living in rural and urban South Australia. Transcripts were analysed in an effort to populate a food security livelihoods framework for single parents. The livelihoods framework is found to be capable of reproducing the types and levels of capabilities reported in previous findings. Furthermore, it provides novel insight into the relationships that form between classes of capabilities and between capabilities and the structures and processes in which they are utilised. Discourses on drug use and public health show a relative neglect of the study of pleasure. We argue that work on the social, cultural and historical specificity of bodies and the emotions can be usefully drawn upon to study the pleasures of drug use. This article reflects upon the nature of pleasure and its under-representation in public health approaches to drug use and methodologies. It considers four varieties of drug pleasures: carnal pleasure, disciplined pleasure, ascetic pleasure and ecstatic pleasure drawing upon historical work on drugs and related areas. Some observations are made on the pre-eminence of certain drug pleasures today and some tensions and contradictions, which reflect broader contradictions in social values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite heightened concerns about levels of obesity and overweight in Western societies, there is a relative absence of sociological research into the subjective experience of dieting, especially for men. This paper focuses on findings related to the male participants from a qualitative study of fourteen volunteers (six female and eight male) drawn from a larger clinical trial comparing two diet conditions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted in two stages to gain an in-depth understanding of the experience of dieting, and found that these men understood and practiced their dieting in different ways from the women, but also from each other, depending on their notions of masculinity. Some were eager to reframe their dieting in 'more manly' terms. The social support or sabotage received from friends and family is significant to these experiences of dieting. This paper discusses how men understand and practice dieting within the framework of gendered discourses and gendered relations that can make healthy eating hard to sustain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The current preoccupation with body weight in western cultures is arguably unprecedented. The obesity crisis has engaged not only health communities, but numerous other public and private organisations, and, in so doing, has created moral alarm as well as a medical crisis. This paper examines the development of obesity and will discuss the ways in which fatness has been rationalised within health discourses. It will explore the way that the corpulent body, once historically considered as a physiological state, is now regarded as a state of moral pathology representing an 'epidemic'. The prospect of this disease sweeping through populations, reaching into virtually every social group, is presented as all the more frightening when no known effective prevention or cure is at hand. The paper will look at the ways in which new forms of government have developed with the panoptic capacity to gaze across populations and objectify the everyday activities of individuals. This 'government of girth' reaches an apogee in the problematisation of children and body weight. Three subject positions in childhood provide a number of opportunities to problematise children: the sick child, the anti-social child, and the innocent child. Each of these amplifies concern about the state of health of children, the permissive nature of parenting and potential moral social decay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Social theory provides a lens through which we can analyse the role of trust in health systems. However, the majority of theoretically informed trust literature addresses 'institutional' or 'interpersonal' trust individually, failing to investigate trust as determined by a 'web' of mutually interacting relationships between individuals and social systems. Current theoretical assumptions are also problematic as they fail to recognise the role that social factors (such as socio-economic status, class and age) play in an individual's willingness to trust. Through the analysis and critique of existing social theories of trust, this paper demonstrates a need for further empirical research into the multidimensionality of trusting relationships, while suggesting new directions for research in public health. This paper examines prosocial and moral behaviours that underpin survival strategies and food acquisition practices among a sample of food insecure homeless youth in Adelaide, Australia. The mixed method study included a study involving in-depth interviews about food procurement and food sharing practices with homeless youth (n = 15) aged 15-24 years. Interviewees demonstrated proactive prosocial behaviours including sharing food, information, begging cooperatively and protecting vulnerable others. Such behaviours may be representative of the prosocial necessities for some homeless youth. Two categories of data on moral frameworks underpinning food acquisition were found. The first category included individuals who morally disengage-that is, they revise their moral values in order to survive. The second category were those who will not be morally compromised. Homeless youth displayed modes of moral decision-making similar to domiciled adolescents, including attention to matters of justice, care of others and unselfishness. Prosocial behaviours and flexible moral choices may be a consequence of and response to food insecurity and be a useful theoretical behavioural framework for explaining unorthodox food acquisition strategies to address street food insecurity. The data provides a valuable contribution to the food security field through 'real' life insight and will be of interest to professionals working with homeless youth and planning interventions to build food security amongst vulnerable populations.
