With the adoption of the mandatory discipline of sociology in high schools throughout the basic education network in the country (2009), the process of institutionalization and consolidation of sociological analysis must be discussed. The institutionalization of the social sciences in the country occurred in a particular way, being initiated by "interpreters of Brazil" - doctors, engineers and lawyers -, and was subsequently consolidated as a scientific discipline. Thus, this paper brings a literature review based on classical and contemporary authors of Sociology. It is noteworthy, though, the experience of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro in the consolidation of the discipline. The reflections emphasize that the general explanations on social problems, essays and systematic scientific production were significant elements in the consolidation of the Social Sciences in the country. The discussion aims to establish a foundation for sociology teachers and researchers as well as for professionals from other fields of knowledge that use sociology as a reference to investigate the country's current social problems [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
