Raw earth bricks made from the soil of the Chalky Champagne region (France) have been used for at least two millennia in construction, a promising heritage in the context of reducing the carbon emissions of buildings. The present experimental study aims to measure the physical, mechanical, thermal, and hydric properties of adobes collected from a local village barn. The results show a high chalk content, estimated at 71%, and a clay content, acting as a binder, of 14%. Despite limited load-bearing capacity, these lightweight adobes are suitable for current single-story constructions, while their hydrothermal properties classify them as excellent moisture regulators for occupants. In association with other bio-sourced materials such as starch–beet pulp bricks, Chalky Champagne adobes yield promising insulating properties, and meet the criteria defined by current energy standards. This paper presents the first laboratory study of four materials (three lateritic soils and one sandy soil) mainly used in road construction in French Guiana. The analysis of macroscopic behaviour by physical tests, following French standards, made it possible to classify and group the samples with respect to the rules specified in the Guide des Terrassements Routiers (GTR). According to the GTR, these raw materials could only be used as backfill materials and under very specific hydric conditions. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation by the X-ray fluorescence analysis, scanning electron microscopy observation supplemented by the X-ray microanalysis, and the infrared analysis revealed differences in the main minerals. Indeed, the presence of mineral species such as kaolinite and gibbsite and oxides such as goethite and hematite was detected. The macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the four soils made it possible to establish a relationship between their geotechnical and mineralogical properties. Finally, the results of this study led to the conclusion that the mineralogical composition and geotechnical properties of lateritic soils must be known simultaneously to allow correct identification for their application in road construction. Research in this field is increasingly oriented towards new techniques that can reduce costs and environmental impacts. Among these techniques, the evaporative dew point cooling technology is the most promising as it can cool outdoor air to temperatures below its wet bulb temperature. The aim of this work is to model and design a dew point cooler for french and algerian climates. This model is used to study the effect of the cooler parameters such as its length, water temperature and working air ratio on its cooling effectiveness and supply temperature.

This study deals with the impact of the amount and granulates type of Typha Australis on the hygric performance of building material based on clay. Three compositions are tested: Two of them have the same proportion of granulate but differ by their morphology (transversal or longitudinal cut of the plant). The third composition contains less Typha granulates resulting from the transversal cut. Hygric properties are experimentally, such as permeability, sorption isotherms, and moisture buffering value. Results show an influence of the Typha granulate and its volume content on the hygrothermal properties of the material due to the porosity.

In a context of promoting energy efficiency, building sector has undergone a notable evolution towards innovative construction insulation materials such as hemp concrete, in order to reduce buildings energy bills and environmental impact. Hemp-Concrete finds application as internal or external thermal insulator in wooden frame walls. In that context, a French building in Grand-Est region, employing Hemp-Concrete as an external insulator is selected and studied. An apartment is monitored for several months. Indoor temperatures, and relative humidities as well as external weather conditions are measured using sensors installed inside the apartment and a weather station placed at the building roof. Indoor comfort analysis shows satisfactory results according to ASHREA standards. Experimental approach is then coupled with a numerical validation at room scale using SPARK simulation tool. Investigations are conducted on indoor office air temperature and relative humidity. Results show a good agreement between numerical values and experimental measurements.

In a global warming context associated to the abuse of energy consumption, actual researches focus more and more on reducing energy costs in the building sector. This target could be achieved by using innovative building materials, such as hemp concrete, due to its positive impacts on thermal and environmental levels. The aim of this work is to carry out a numerical study of a hemp concrete wall subjected to several indoor and outdoor conditions of temperature and relative humidity using the program object oriented SPARK. The hygrothermal behaviour of the wall is investigated taking into account heat and moisture transfer within the wall as well as hysteresis phenomenon between the sorption and desorption curves and their temperature dependency.

This work shows the making of a new bio-based material for building insulation from sugar beet pulp and potato starch. The material is both lightweight and ecofriendly. The influence of starch/ sugar beet pulp ratio (S/BP) is studied. Four binder mass dosages are considered, 10, 20, 30 and 40% (relative to the beet pulp). Samples are characterized in terms of absolute and bulk density, compressive and flexural strength, as well as thermal properties (thermal conductivity and thermal inertia). The compressive strength increases linearly with the S/BP mass ratio to reach 0.52 MPa and the compressive strain is 30%. The thermal conductivity is to around 0.070 W/m. K. The results obtained shows that increasing starch amount tends to decrease composite porosity but increases thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. Depending on the starch content, beet pulp composites have a good thermal and can be used as building materials.

This study aims at investigating the effects of three different wheelchair cushion technologies at the patient–wheelchair interface. To this end, eight participants were recruited to remain in an unrelieved seated position on a wheelchair successively equipped with three different cushions (foam, air-cell-based and gel), for a duration of 45 min. Interface pressure, temperature (measured with infrared thermography) and relative humidity were measured at the seat interface, at different timestamps. Experimental results show that foam cushion is significantly more efficient in reducing contact peak pressure (p <.01), while the gel cushion displays higher heat evacuation capabilities. In terms of relative humidity, no significant difference is observed among the three technologies (p >.29): all of them evacuate around only 10% of the total humidity compared to the reference situation (i.e., without cushion). Besides, a complementary numerical simulation corresponding to the steady state of the patient-wheelchair structure clearly highlights the temperature volume field at the underside of the seat, which acts like a thermal barrier and contributes to heat accumulation. In the context of global warming associated with the excess of energy consumption, energy saving and environmental sustainability in buildings have become significant issues at both national and European levels. Therefore, the adoption of energy-efficiency measures in new and renovated dwellings will increase the demand for thermal insulation, which is crucial to improve the housing comfort by reducing the heat loss through the building envelope. Over the past two decades, several bio-based materials have been used in building thermal insulation, such as hemp concrete. Promoting the use of hemp concrete in new constructions and restoration of existing buildings first requires a validation of its hygrothermal behavior at both wall and building scales. For this, several models dealing with various physical aspects of hemp concrete were developed to understand their impact on the prediction of changes in temperature and relative humidity. These physical phenomena include hemp concrete hygroscopic hysteresis and thermal dependency of sorption curves. The preliminary results show that hysteresis has a significant influence on the numerical prediction in the short-term, while temperature dependency has less influence at the wall scale. The next part of this article is devoted to the study of these phenomena at the room scale by monitoring the internal conditions and energy consumption of a virtual hemp concrete office. The results highlight the fact that hysteresis and thermal dependency have low impact on indoor conditions, which could probably be related to the other parameters at the room scale. The paper aims to present a new insulating material based on cork aggregates and cement designed for building applications. Samples are prepared by mixing natural cork aggregates, sand, cement and water. Four cork volume dosages are considered, 0, 25, 50 and 75% (relative to the sand). Samples are characterised in terms of hardened density, compressive and flexural strength, as well as thermal conductivity and hydric properties (moisture content, vapour permeability, moisture buffering value and absorption by partial immersion). Results show that increasing cork granule amount tends to increase moisture retention and buffering value but decreases density, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties. This article deals with the influence of both morphology and amount of Typha on hygrothermal behavior of a Typha–clay composite for building application. An agromaterial containing the fiber mix of Typha Australis and clay was made in three samples: three fiber mixtures were prepared with different amounts Typha and cut type (transversal or longitudinal). The physical properties of these materials were studied in terms of porosity, apparent and absolute density, thermal conductivity, and hygric properties. Results show a real impact of the Typha fraction type and its volume content on hygrothermal properties of the studied material due to the porosity. Global environmental issues are arising over the developed and developing world. Improving energy efficiency and reducing Green Gases emissions become the key issues in all the economic sectors and, in particular, the building sector that is one of the most energy-consuming. It is, therefore, important to find alternative building materials with low-environmental impact contributing to global sustainability. In that context, this study reports on the performance of sustainable materials produced from natural resources as hemp-concrete or from recycled-waste nonbiodegradable materials including recycled polyethylene terephthalate. Three façades employing three different materials (hemp-concrete, hemp-concrete with brick and recycled polyethylene terephthalate) were investigated in three cities in France (Nancy and Carpentras) and Italy (Perugia) with different climate. The energy performance of each façade was assessed in terms of cooling and heating demands, electrical consumption for a constant flow rate ventilation mode, considering different orientations. Energy efficiency and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are actual key issues in all the economic sectors and, in particular, in buildings which is acknowledged worldwide as one of the most energy-consuming. In this context, it would be desirable to duly address those issues by searching for and assessing proper solutions and strategies: the usage of eco-friendly construction materials can be considered as one of those. This paper reports upon the performance of three façades containing sustainable products that are manufactured using natural resources and, alternatively, post-consumer waste based materials; those are: hemp-concrete; and Recycled PolyEthylene Terephthalate (R-PET), respectively. The energy performance of each façade was assessed in terms of cooling and heating demands, electrical consumptions and indoor thermal comfort including indoor temperature and relative humidity. Additionally, a Carbon Footprint (CF) assessment was carried out considering both the estimated energy demands and the life-cycle emission factors associated with the energy mix of the countries where the façades were located, i.e. France and Italy. Based upon the findings of the study, the R-PET façade represented the most performing solution between the three façades in all the scenarios considered and, moreover, the humidity-sensitive flow rate ventilation system came out as a solution able to reduce the electricity consumptions. Finally, considering the Carbon Footprint results, the energy country mix emerged as a key issue, making the Italian case study the worst one, though the total electrical energy consumption were comparable with those of the other case studies. This article describes the results of a research project carried out at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne. The aim of this article is to develop a new insulating material produced by bonding hemp shives with wheat starch as a binder and to characterize its physical properties such as sorption isotherm, water vapour permeability, thermal conductivity, heat capacity and porosity. The equations of coupled heat and moisture transfer within the panels are introduced. These governing equations are applied on the room level in order to assess the hygrothermal behaviour of the panels and its impact on energy consumption and indoor comfort. In this article, a hygrothermal building model, taking into account the building envelope, indoor heat and moisture sources, indoor environment and moisture buffering capacity of interior objects, is presented and validated with the test cases found in the literature. The model is used to study the impact of hemp concrete and the moisture buffer capacity of the interior elements on the prediction of the hygrothermal comfort in the building. The numerical results show that the use of hemp concrete in buildings can ensure good hygrothermal comfort. Besides, taking into account the effect of moisture buffering of indoor objects increases the building performance. Our results also suggest that neglecting moisture transfer through the envelope increases significantly the predicted percentage of dissatisfied indices and reduces the acceptability of indoor air quality during the occupied period. This study also confirmed that the combined relative humidity-sensitive ventilation system and moisture buffering capacity of building envelope and of interior objects is a very efficient way to reduce the heating energy consumption. Following the environnement grenelle, reaching 10% of bio-resourced materials in building sector except wood is one of goals until 2020. Among these agro-materials, one can distinguish the hemp concrete. Based on hemp hurds and mineral binders including lime or polymer as starch, the hemp composites are appreciated for their hydrothermal and acoustic properties. In this study, a vegetal binder based on starch and extracted from wheat is used with treated and non-treated hemp hurds to form an ecological composite. The studied hemp-starch is prepared with a ratio (H/S = 3,3). Hygrothermal properties such as moisture buffering value, sorption isotherm, water vapor permeability, thermal conductivity, and heat capacity are experimentally studied. The pore size distribution is performed using mercury porosimetry. Results reveal that the hemp-starch composite may be a promising solution in the insulation field due to its relatively low thermal conductivity and capacity to regulate the indoor relative humidity. This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation into the hygric properties and moisture buffering performance of hemp-starch composite panels designed for building applications. Composite panels were produced by bonding hemp shiv with wheat starch as a binder. Two types of hemp shiv were tested: chemically processed shiv with enhanced adhesion between fibers and starch matrix, and non-treated shiv. The panels were then characterised in terms of their hygroscopic properties (sorption curve and vapour diffusion resistance factor) and their moisture buffering performance (moisture buffering value, MBV). The determination of theoretical MBV was based on the effusivity of the material, which is obtained from its basic hygroscopic characterisation. The results show that both panels are excellent hydric regulators that can be used to improve indoor hygrothermal comfort by buffering indoor relative humidity variations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The gradual development of government policies for ecological transition in the modern construction sector leads researchers to explore new alternative and low environmental impact materials with a particular focus on bio-sourced materials. In this perspective, the mechanical, thermal insulation, and the sound absorption performances of a spent coffee grounds/potato starch bio-based composite were analyzed for potential application in buildings. Based on thermal conductivity and diffusivity tests, the coffee grounds waste biocomposite was characterized as an insulating material comparable with conventional thermal insulation materials of plant origin. Acoustical tests revealed absorption coefficients in the same range as other conventional materials used in building acoustical comfort. This bio-sourced material presented a sufficient compressive mechanical behavior for non-load-bearing structures and a sufficient mechanical capacity to be shaped into building bricks. Mechanical, thermal, and acoustic performances depend on the moisture environment. The groundwork was laid for an initial reflection on how this composite would behave in two opposite climates: the continental climate of Reims in France and the tropical climate of Belém in Brazil. One possible approach to reducing the environmental impacts associated with the building sector is the development and use of bio-based building materials. The objective of this study is to determine the water properties of bio-based insulation materials, derived from winegrowing co-products, which promote energy efficiency. The water performance of these new bio-based materials is based on the measurement of the moisture buffer value, the sorption isotherm, and the water vapor permeability. Four by-products are analyzed: stalks, grape pomace, crushed stalks, and skins; they are combined with a potato starch binder. The performance of these composites is compared to two other bio-based composites (hemp/starch and beet pulp/starch). The objective of this work is to study the effect of taking into account interface contact resistance on the prediction of moisture distribution through multilayered building envelope. Therefore, two mathematical models to describe coupled heat and mass transfer in double-layered porous materials have been investigated: one that considers imperfect contact between layers and another that ignores this phenomenon. Both models are one-dimensional and were implemented using finite difference technique with an implicit scheme. Numerical results are presented in terms of moisture distribution for a double-layered wall and compared with the experimental data available in the current literature. The comparison has shown that the model that disregards interface contact resistance between layers cannot predict correctly one-dimensional heat and moisture transfer within double-layered porous materials. The sensitivity analysis of the simulation parameters and the impact of contact resistances at the whole building level are presented in detail and their effect on the whole building level was analysed. Our results suggest that the thermal contact resistance is the most influent parameter on the moisture flux across the hydraulic contact interface. On the whole building level, simulations indicate that taking into account contact resistances had a slight effect on the indoor relative humidity but a noticeable effect on heating input energy. This article concerns the elaboration and the characterization of a novel biobased potato starch-beet pulp composite for packaging applications as cushion foams. A twin-screw extruder was used to elaborate composite foams. SEM observations of these materials were conducted, and thermomechanical properties were studied in terms of thermal transitions (TGA, DSC) and viscoelastic properties (DMA). The effect of relative humidity content on viscoelastic properties was analyzed as a function of frequency. The different test results show that the composite structures are homogeneously mixed. The sponge-like structure of the beet-pulp disappears indicating a good compatibility between the two mixed constituents. The DSC curve of starch-beet pulp foam shows a single thermal transition at 153.6 °C, indicating the thermal homogeneity of the obtained composite material. The density value of starch-beet pulp foam is higher than conventional foams, but this can be optimized by adjusting the technological parameters of the extruder. This article deals with the elaboration and the characterization of an innovative 100% plant-based green composite made solely of beet pulp (BP) and potato starch (S). Using this type of material in insulation applications seems a good solution to reduce the CO2 gas emissions in building. The influence of the starch amount on composite characteristics was studied. Four mixtures were considered with different S/BP mass ratios (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4). The physical properties of these materials were studied in terms of porosity, apparent and absolute densities, thermal conductivity, and hygric properties. The influence of humidity content on acoustical properties was studied as a function of frequency. Test results show a real impact of both starch and humidity contents on the hygrothermal and acoustical properties of the studied material due to the porosity.
