Abstract

This submission contains the Proceedings of the 2012 Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mathematics Education Study Group (CMESG), held at Laval University in Québec City, Québec. The CMESG is a group of mathematicians and mathematics educators who meet annually to discuss mathematics education issues at all levels of learning. The aims of the Study Group are: to advance education by organizing and coordinating national conferences and seminars to study and improve the theories of the study of mathematics or any other aspects of mathematics education in Canada at all levels; and to undertake research in mathematics education and to disseminate the results of this research. These proceedings include plenary lectures, a panel discussion, working group reports, topic session descriptions, new PhD reports, and summaries of ad hoc and poster sessions. 2. Stages of Learning: Building a Native Curriculum. Teachers' Guide, Student Activities--Part I, Research Unit--Part II.

Abstract

This language arts curriculum developed for Native American students in Manitoba (Canada) consists of a teachers' guide, a student guide, and a research unit. The curriculum includes reading selections and learning activities appropriate for the different reading levels of both upper elementary and secondary students. The purpose of the unit is for students to develop skills in brainstorming, biography writing, letter writing, note taking, researching, interviewing, spelling, and vocabulary. Reading selections focus on Elijah Harper, an Ojibway Cree Indian who helped defeat the Meech Lake Accord, an amendment to Canada's Constitution proposed in 1987. The Meech Lake Accord would have transferred power from the federal government to provincial governments and would have failed to take into account the interests of Natives, women, and minorities. The curriculum also includes reading selections on the creation of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry and on Crazy Horse. The guide includes directions for pre-reading activities, ideas for discussions, post-reading activities, and answers to student learning activities. Students work together using notes from class discussions to write a biography of Elijah Harper. Students are then required to write a biography on a Native person of their choice who has been recognized for making a contribution to Native culture. The guide also includes additional resources; information on interviewing, letter writing, brainstorming, biographies, and spelling; background information on the Meech Lake Accord and the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry; and additional ideas for classroom activities. The student activities guide includes comprehension questions for discussion or written response; vocabulary, grammar, and spelling exercises drawing on the content of the reading selections; and supplementary word search activities. The research unit, written for upper elementary and secondary students covers the following topics: how to research, choosing a topic, organizing research, making notes, finding reference materials, using guide words, using the card catalogue, using the encyclopedia, using periodicals, making a research diary, using a bibliography, organizing by subtopics, organizing by outlining, using tables and graphs, and reference review. 3. Poems Found among the Resolution Scrapbooks: A Teacher Narrative Inquiry

Abstract

Six pre-service teachers participated in a component of narrative inquiry that took place the week before their teacher education program began. The component offered the teachers a variety of multimodal activities, such as body biographies, teaching museums, and paper tearing representations, all making use of repurposed materials, to critically consider their recurring narratives in relation to their recurring pedagogical beliefs and practices. Handmade journals and resolution scrapbooks acted as places to reflect and record their responses (Author). For this paper, I turned to narrative inquiry supported by found poetry and focus on the part of the component that contains the written contents of the teachers' resolution scrapbooks. More specifically, I asked, "What are the effects of the application of the resolution scrapbook on the recurring narratives of six pre-service teachers?"

4. Chance, Choice, and Opportunity in the Careers of Four Women Educators.

Abstract

Life history interviews with four women holding doctorates in educational administration are presented in this paper, which examines how chances and choice affect women administrators' career decisions. A second focus is on how organizational structure in educational organizations can enhance career opportunities for women educators. Three anecdotes are presented to illustrate the relationships among chance, choice, and opportunities in the careers of particular women in particular organizational contexts. The narratives are categorized according to three themes--unexpected openings, widening horizons, and chance remarks. The stories suggest that women's opportunities can be expanded through the modification of existing structures. A review of current policy initiatives in Canada found that opportunity for females could be engendered through: special assignments; rewarding mentoring functions; redefinition of the concepts of career and success; and affirmative action programs. A recommendation is made to foster environments where chance occurrences can be transformed into opportunities. (29 references) (LMI)

5. Paddling the Seas of Tsunami Capitalist Persuasion: Manipulated or Self-determined?

Abstract

All "friluftsliv," or "open-air living," is to some degree a "quest." This certainly applies to paddling the big, open waters, although William James (1981) originally used the term to deepen the understanding of the Canadian soul during expeditionary travel on the great northern rivers. James was inspired in his task by the classical quest sequence of "Preparation, Separation, Tribulation and Return." Gaining insight into the panorama of paddling the seas and great lakes of the world could be no less well served through viewing such voyages in terms of these historical quest segments. In this paper, the author begins by examining his paddling life history, which now spans more than half a century and includes both private and pedagogically oriented ventures. This was supplemented by a review of his friluftsliv writings as well as a wide-ranging document analysis of quantitative and qualitative texts and illustrations of canoeing and kayaking. 7. Artists in Canada: A National Resource.

Abstract

"Artists in Canada" is a bilingual union list of documentation files on Canadian artists held by the National Gallery of Canada Library and by 22 libraries and art galleries across the country. More than 42,700 artists are represented in "Artists in Canada," with biographical information, as well as locations for files. Originally compiled manually, "Artists in Canada" has been automated since the late 1970s and has been accessible internationally on the World Wide Web since 1995. "Artists in Canada" is also available in print format. A new edition, published in 1999, is a volume of nearly 750 pages. This paper provides an overview of "Artists in Canada." Topics covered include the Canadian context, documentation files, formats, partnership with CHIN (Canadian Heritage Information Network), entries, bibliographic standards, searching capabilities, and future directions. 8. Reclaiming Coady: Adult Education and Economic Development in Atlantic Canada

Abstract

This paper seeks to challenge the rhetoric of deficit that surrounds Atlantic Canada by employing an appreciative approach and discussing one key Atlantic Canadian, Rev. Moses M. Coady, adult educator and the founder of the Antigonish Movement. Coady's work was grounded in the Atlantic region, and his message of cooperation, community, and consciousness-raising pioneered the field of emancipatory education so often associated with the Brazilian educator Paulo Freire. As Atlantic Canadians, we wish to reclaim Coady's work and celebrate his contribution to the culture and development of our region. This paper begins with an overview of the deficit discourse that permeates Atlantic Canada. The paper describes the life and work of Moses Coady and provides a brief biography of the life and work of Paolo Freire, both of whom approached their work from an appreciative perspective, to lay the foundation for our argument as to why the work of Moses Coady needs to be reclaimed in the teaching and practice of adult education in Atlantic Canada.

10. Transacting in the Arts of Adolescent Novel Study: Teacher Candidates Embody 'Charlotte Doyle'

Abstract

To help underscore the importance of giving the arts an integral place in the literacy continuum of secondary school language arts, I immersed myself in a careful reading of twenty teacher candidates' transactions in the art of body biography for novel study for intermediate students (grades 7-10). Coming together in groups of five, the teacher candidates used life-size body outlines drawn on oversized paper, along with a myriad of found and stocked materials, such as fabric, pens, and paint, to experience and express the transformation of the main character in the young adult novel, "True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle." Informed by their transactions in the body biography compositions, the teacher candidates reported that they were able to reach a more holistic portrait of Charlotte, while enriching their own instructional repertoires.

12. A Narrative Inquiry of the Sameness of and Difference between My Autobiographical and Biographical Research Methods on New Immigrant Women.

Abstract

The sameness of and difference between autobiographical and biographical research methods were studied in this exploration of the researcher's work with six recent female immigrants to Canada, herself and her mother included. The self-study of autobiography and the biographical study of the researcher's mother and four other subjects were similar in that both approaches required the researcher to take uncertainty as the norm in the process of data collection and interpretation. The approaches differ in that the autobiographical work is mainly internal and inward directed, while the biographical approach is more external. To work with a live protagonist makes it possible to develop an intersubjective text influenced by the relationship between the researcher and the subject of study. A biography becomes autobiographical in what it tells about its author. (Contains nine references.) (SLD)

This article features an interview with Pierre A. Lévy, Professor in the Department of Communication, University of Ottawa, Canada. He occupies the Canada Research Chair in Collective Intelligence where he is engaged in research on the design of a universal system for semantic addressing of digital documents. He completed his MA at the Sorbonne and his PhD at Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), Paris. His Habilitation (PhD) was in sciences of information and communication at the Université de Grenoble. Professor Levy studies the concept of collective intelligence and knowledge- based societies. Abstract

The meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus , is the most widely distributed Microtus species in North America. Across its range, it shows marked demographic differences, experiences a large range of climatic conditions, and varies considerably in body size and life-history characteristics. To study the genetic basis of the geographic variation in size and life history of this species, we subjected three populations, one from central Canada and two from eastern Canada, to quantitative genetic analysis in the lab. We studied the variance and covariance of several size and growth variables as well as age and size at maturity by means of population crosses, full-sib analysis, and parent-offspring regressions. We found that the phenotypic differences among these populations are almost entirely due to environmental effects. However, within populations, additive genetic and maternal effects explain most of the variation. We discuss possible explanations for the lack of genetic differences among the populations and speculate that a similar reaction norm is maintained in all populations through heterogeneity in the temporal or spatial environment that the populations experience. The heterogeneity may be mediated through population density fluctuations, climatic variation, or variation in site productivity. Thus, we hypothesize that M. pennsylvanicus has evolved to be the best in all possible worlds rather than in one actual world. This study highlights the crucial importance of maternal and environmental effects on the size, growth, and life history of small rodents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
