Rendiconti ,epistati ,opere pubbliche ,archivi ,Atene ,Grecia classica ,Ancient history ,D51-90 - Abstract
This paper reviews the post-2010 debate on Athenian building accounts of the classical age, with particular regard to the fifth century BCE. An initial summary of the main papers in epigraphic research is provided. The essay aims to feed the debate on the relationship between the inscriptions, often of monumental form and impact, and the writings produced and presented by magistrates during the accounting examination, scheduled at the end of the assignment.

The Early modern period was a time when history was becoming a true science, based on archival and material sources that scholars must prove as being authentic. The paper addresses the way seventeenth-eighteenth-century Dominican Friars used material and monumental sources to write the history of their own order. Which elements caught their attention, when they watch to their medieval heritage? With which methods and vocabulary did they describe it? How did they combine the information given by these material evidences with the archival sources? The analysis is based mainly on an unpublished documentation, mostly kept in the General Archive of the Order in Rome. First, the paper asks whether the Dominican scholars showed the feeling of a gap between present times and the « medieval » period, i.e. mainly the heroic times of their foundation during the 13th century. Then, the paper shows that the friars are often “antiquarians”, since they are interested in the material and cultural aspects of the past, with a focus rather on monumental and material sources than on archival ones. In a third part, the paper deals with some evidences of the awareness of some friars of the material heritage’s value, especially when they inventoried a threatened heritage through descriptions and drawings.

This paper will discuss methodologies, approaches and issues, emerging out of three major research projects that have investigated early histories of video art in Europe: REWIND (2004 ongoing), REWIND Italia (2011-2014) and EWVA (2015-2018). The paper will discuss how the projects have engaged with the history of the apparatus, the identity and status of the artworks, preservation methods, and the legacy of these video artworks today. A particular focus will be on semi-structured questionnaires for interviews structured to capture oral histories, memories and recollections, that in some cases would have been otherwise lost to future knowledge and the uncovering of lost artworks and their available documentation. The speakers - directly involved in the projects - will discuss solutions, risks and experiences encountered in the projects and future research perspectives for re-covering, collecting, archiving and narrating the histories of early video art in Europe. The paper will discuss also different practice-based research methods, platforms and engagement strategies, including re-installation and re-enactment.

The subject of the access and free reuse of cultural data is one of the more topical challenges in the modern democracy of the knowledge. The full affirmation of this principle, still finding today however several cultural obstacles both on a cultural and a regulatory point of view, would allow to rethink toward more including forms the public administration’s approach to cultural heritage. This paper focuses on the request, advanced by the movement Fotografie libere per i Beni Culturali to extend the free photography for research purposes to public archives and libraries, lately fulfilled by the law n. 124/2017 which entered into force on the 29th of August. Great opportunities may instead be presented by the adoption of licenses by museums, archives, and libraries, allowing free commercial reuse of digitization, as well as that panorama freedom today still denied in Italy. The paper concludes by examining another category of cultural data, namely documentation related to the archaeological excavations preserved in the MiBACT archives: free access to this type of data could encourage not only archaeological research, but also more efficient conservation and promotional activities.

Ugo Foscolo, "Epoca quarta". The paper will present the detailed account of the Conference Funds and Collections of the person and personality in archives, libraries and museums: a resource, an opportunity, held in Bologna, at the University, October 26, 2016. The Conference was structured in nineteen reports and a final round table and involved librarians, archivists and museum professionals on the treatment of ‘cultural archives’: those cohesive and varied collections, gathered by people during their professional life, or simply out of passion and then given to public or private institutions. The presentation of projects and experiences implemented by various cultural institutions, not only by type but also by institutional affiliation, allowed the large audience to become aware of the Italian mature reflections on this topic. The event was also an opportunity for discussion between traditionally distinct professionals in order to create an advantageous ‘transversal’ dialogue about the management of cultural heritage.

The digital reproduction of archival records involves different rights as the right of scientific reseaech, the right of free expression of thought but also the right to privacy. These rights must be carefully balanced. The relationship between them is analyzed in legal terms, under Italian legislation, and in technological terms, just about the use of the technologies of the digital reproduction of documents, with particular attention to the concepts of communication and dissemination of personal data. The paper shows that the existing regulation framework fully meets the needs of protection of privacy, including in relation to technological changes taking place. Finally it proposes strengthening instruments like the statement of informed consent and the elaboration of specific policies to ensure the highest possible protection.

In the last decades the world has become rapidly smaller with the destruction of spatial barriers known as “globalization.” It is a term both annoying and exhaustive, signifying a syncretic and global perception of reality. This condition has been further made easy by the enormous amount of data made accessible to us. The accelerated transition from an analogue to a digital world has literally invaded us with information creating not only a huge cultural gap between generations, with all its consequences, but offering at the same time huge opportunities. This paper intends to describe how technology, not without obstacles, has changed the way to communicate culture, and to make it more accessible. Our cultural heritage requires technology to be known and furthermore in order to be preserved. Present archives and museums, whether large or small, must move along with times, giving large space to technology and to new professional skills. The protection of our heritage requires communication, which plays a decisive role in making everybody knowledgeable. It is paradigmatic today and a duty to use technologies in order to store, preserve, save and communicate this heritage.

The Study Centre Edoardo Sanguineti (www.centrosanguineti.unito.it), established at the Department of Humanities of the University of Turin in collaboration with the universities of Genoa, Milan and Salerno, is working to build an extensive and fully navigable archive, configured as a development of Sanguineti's Wunderkammer, a digital archival database which, over a period of five years, has collected a rich heritage of unpublished, unknown or dispersed documents, partly kept at the Centre and partly in related archives. In order to provide an example of the way in which these acquisitions allow us to approach the study of the author on a new basis, we propose here the analysis of a folder containing six sheets, three handwritten and three typed, found among the papers of the Fondo Eredi Sanguineti: in the three sheets written in biros we find the preparatory material and the various phases of elaboration of the 'Three Green Sonnets'., Il Centro Studi Interuniversitario Edoardo Sanguineti (www.centrosanguineti.unito.it), sorto presso il Dipartimento di Studi Umanistici dell’Università di Torino in collaborazione con gli atenei di Genova, Milano e Salerno, sta lavorando per costruire un archivio esteso e integralmente navigabile, configurato come uno sviluppo della Sanguineti’s Wunderkammer, un database digitale archivistico che, nell’arco di un quinquennio, ha raccolto un ricco patrimonio di documenti inediti, sconosciuti o dispersi, in parteconservati presso il Centro e in parte presso archivi a lui connessi.

The present paper aims to analyze the cultural reactions to the downgrade through a study case: that of Pisan Luigi Navarrette (1638-1688). We will focus specifically on the Sogno (Dream) the narration written by Navarrette following the charge of theft against Monte Pio of Pisa with the consequent arrest and estrangement from public life. It was just to overcome this dramatic crisis that Luigi, apart from defending himself in court, realized a narration dedicated to his own city. However at the center of the Dream we do not find the histoire bataille of the mythical republican Pisa, but a «dialogue over the ungratefulness of the Pisans» that is the portrait of a stifled city, tired by its own citizens with an evident parallelism between its own decadence n and the one of the whole city. The idea of using the narration as a tool of social redemption makes of the Sogno an unicum in the Tuscan annalistic, offering new food for thought that stands out from the observations related to the antiquarian tradition. For this reason, The Sogno is an opportunity to reflect on the use of the narration as a social redemption tool and the opportunity to represent a whole urban community.

Over eighty years have passed since Pierre Grimal’s work concerning the so-called Horti Tauriani, Pallantiani and Epaphroditiani was published. Through the re-examination of the status quaestionis about the south-eastern gardens of the Esquiline Hill, this paper aims at solving some of the many fundamental and still unsolved issues about their location during the Imperial Age. Furthermore, the examination of a handmade drawing allows us to clearly identify the remains of Epaphroditus’ monumental tomb, located along the borders of the imperial freedman’s gardens. Thanks to archival research, it is possible to clarify the highly debated location of the horti Epaphroditiani, in order to improve our understanding of the topography of this ancient landscape.

This paper conjectures that standard archival descriptions are no longer efficient in order to answer to society needs, mainly in an intercultural perspective. After a brief evaluation of the peculiarities of cultural heritage different domain languages, the specific issues of archival descriptions are discussed, seeking the possible strategies - technological as well as cultural - valid to open to an integration of descriptive languages. A particular focus is proposed on RDA, an approach which shows to be the best candidate to harmonize the separate descriptions typical of archival domain and activating the potential informative integrations with any limitation of information environments and single content quality.

When conducting historical research, especially in archives of (state) administrations that hold many documents of a generic nature, one sometimes stumbles onto sources that do not reveal their importance at first sight, but only disclose their relevance over time. In this paper, we will discuss one such a document, unearthed during research on the colonial public healthcare infrastructure in the former Belgian Congo.

Preserving a document in its original form, describing it, making it accessible, have always been the main tasks of an archive. And this fundamental mission does not change when the document to be preserved is in digital form. In this case, however, the archive might give itself a further task: that of granting the possibility of a new life for the digital documents preserved. Allowing for their dissemination, re-use, and - if and when possible - even modification (while granting the preservation of a copy of the document in its original form), the archive acquires a new role in the process of active information building and exchange.
