In this paper, the joint spectrum sensing and resource allocation problem is investigated in a multi-band-multi-user cognitive radio (CR) network. Assuming imperfect spectrum sensing information, our goal is to jointly optimize the sensing threshold and power allocation strategy such that the average total throughput of secondary users (SUs) is maximized. In Addition, the power of SUs is constrained to keep the interference introduced to primary users under certain limit, which gives rise to a nonconvex mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) optimization problem. Our contribution in this paper is threefold. First, it is illustrated that the dimension of the nonconvex MINLP problem can be significantly reduced, which helps to re-formulate the optimization problem without resorting to integer variables. Second, it is demonstrated that the simplified formulation admits the canonical form of a monotonic optimization, and an $\epsilon $ -optimal solution can be achieved using the polyblock outer approximation algorithm. Third, a practical low-complexity spectrum sensing and resource allocation algorithm is developed to reduce the computational cost. This paper explores the problem of joint mode selection, spectrum management, power control, and interference mitigation for device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying a Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) network. We consider a dynamic mode selection scenario, in which the modes (D2D or cellular) of the devices depend on optimal allocations. To improve the quality of service (QoS) for the users, the optimization objective in a corresponding problem is formulated in terms of buffer size of user equipments (UEs), which is estimated based on buffer status information collected by the UEs. The realizations of a resource allocation approach presented in the paper include its real-time and non-real-time implementations, as well as two modifications applicable to a standard LTE-Direct (LTE-D) network. Performance of the proposed algorithms has been evaluated using the OPNET-based simulations. Power control is becoming increasingly essential for the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond systems. An example use-case, among others, is the unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) communications where the nearly line-of-sight (LoS) radio channels may result in very low signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). The authors in (Chiang et al., 2007) proposed to efficiently and reliably solve this kind of non-convex problem via a series of geometrical programmings (GPs) using condensation approximation. However, it is only applicable for a small-scale network with several communication pairs and practically infeasible with more (e.g., tens of) nodes to be jointly optimized. We therefore in this paper aim to provide new insights into this problem. By properly introducing auxiliary variables, the problem is transformed to an equivalent form which is simpler and more intuitive for condensation. A novel condensation method with linear complexity is also proposed based on the form. The enhancements make the GP-based power control feasible for both small- and especially large-scale networks that are common in 5G and beyond. The algorithm is verified via simulations. In the incoming communication system, especially for the battery constrained Internet of Things devices, consumption of power resources will be a critical performance metric. This point shows importance when throughput minimal requirement and interference limit have been carried out. This paper investigates such a power allocation problem in a multiple-parallel-channel wireless system to minimize the sum power consumed by the entire system, while meeting the sum power constrains for each group of channels and the whole system as well as meeting the throughput constraints for each of the groups and the system. Sum power minimization itself is also a key issue for margin-adaptive loading. Resorting to geometric concepts, an algorithm named as the group virtual bottom power water-filling (GVB-PWF) is proposed to solve the problem, including the large-scale problems, which computes the exact solution with a low degree of the polynomial computational complexity. Optimality of the proposed algorithm is also proved strictly. To the best of our knowledge, no prior algorithm in the open literature offered such an optimal solution to the proposed problem, with the merit of exactness and efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed power allocation algorithm uses less power about 25%, compared with the popular primal-dual interior-point method with the same amount of computations. In this correspondence paper, an underlay cognitive radio multicast network, consisting of a cognitive base station (CBS) and multiple multicast groups of secondary users (SUs), is considered. All SUs, belonging to a particular multicast group, are served by the CBS using a common primary user (PU) channel. The goal is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) of the system, through dynamic adaptation of target rate and transmit power for each multicast group, under the PUs’ individual interference constraint. The optimization problem formulated for this is proved to be nonquasi-concave with respect to the joint variation of the CBS's transmit power and target rate. In this paper, we consider the coordinated multipoint (CoMP) transmission design for the downlink cloud radio access network (Cloud-RAN). Our design aims to optimize the set of remote radio heads (RRHs) serving each user and the precoding and transmission power to minimize the total transmission power while maintaining the fronthaul capacity and users' quality-of-service (QoS) constraints. The fronthaul capacity constraint involves a nonconvex and discontinuous function that renders the optimal exhaustive search method unaffordable for large networks. To address this challenge, we propose two low-complexity algorithms. The first pricing-based algorithm solves the underlying problem through iteratively tackling a related pricing problem while appropriately updating the pricing parameter. In the second iterative linear-relaxed algorithm, we directly address the fronthaul constraint function by iteratively approximating it with a suitable linear form using a conjugate function and solving the corresponding convex problem. For performance evaluation, we also compare our proposed algorithms with two existing algorithms in the literature. Finally, extensive numerical results are presented, which illustrate the convergence of our proposed algorithms and confirm that our algorithms significantly outperform the state-of-the-art existing algorithms. In this paper, we present a civil aircrafts augmented space-air-ground integrated networks (CAA-SAGIN) architecture, where each mobile user can access multiple platforms simultaneously. With the target of ensuring fairness, we put forward the fair optimization strategies including resource allocation and resource auction. In the resource allocation, we formulate a service-oriented fair (SOF) resource allocation problem in order to minimize the difference between the allocated and required data rate. After introducing convex-relaxation and logarithmic approximation, the joint optimal solutions of subchannel and power allocation can be obtained by SOF iteration algorithm. Aiming at managing the terrestrial network overload, we present a user update mechanism. After applying SOF resource allocation for selected original users in sky access platforms, we propose a resource auction scheme so as to maximize the utility for both sides. First, we decompose the original problem into several subproblems and transform them into their lower bound by first-order approximation. Then, we can obtain the joint optimal solution with an alternating descent iterative method. From simulation results, we can find that CAA-SAGIN can bring great benefits to traditional terrestrial networks. In this paper, we consider power allocation in multiband cognitive radio (CR) networks, where multiple secondary users (SUs) transmit via a common relay and compete for the transmit power of the relay. We employ a hybrid overlay/underlay spectrum sharing scheme, allowing the SU to adapt its way of accessing the licensed spectrum to the status of the primary user (PU). If the PU is detected to be idle at the selected channel, the SU works in an overlay mode; else, it works in spectrum underlay. In addition, an auction-based power-allocation scheme is proposed to solve power competition of multiple SUs. For the SU working in spectrum overlay, the relay allocates the power in proportion to its payment without additional constraints; for the SU in spectrum underlay, its own transmit power and that of the relay are upper bounded for the quality of service (QoS) of the PU. Then, the convergence of the proposed auction algorithm and the outage probability of secondary transmissions is theoretically analyzed. Interference alignment (IA) is a promising technique for interference management and can be applied to spectrum sharing in cognitive radio (CR) networks. However, the sum rate may fall short of the theoretical maximum, particularly at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the quality of service (QoS) of the primary user (PU) may not be guaranteed. In addition, power allocation (PA) in IA-based CR networks is largely ignored, which can further improve its performance. Thus, in this paper, PA in IA-based CR networks is studied. To guarantee the QoS requirement of the PU, its minimal transmitted power is derived. Then, we propose three PA algorithms to maximize the throughput of secondary users (SUs), the energy efficiency (EE) of the network, and the requirements of SUs, respectively, while guaranteeing the QoS of the PU. To reduce the complexity, the closed-form solutions of these algorithms are further studied in detail. The outage probability of the PU according to its rate threshold is also derived to analyze the performance of these algorithms. Moreover, we propose a transmission-mode adaptation scheme to further improve the PU's performance when its QoS requirement cannot be guaranteed at low SNR, and it can be easily combined with the proposed PA algorithms. In this paper, we consider the problem of power control for sum-rate maximization on multiple interfering links [transmitter–receiver pairs (Tx–RX)] under a sum power constraint. We consider a single-frequency network, where all pairs are operating in the same frequency band, thereby creating interference with each other. We study the power-allocation problem for sum-rate maximization with and without quality-of-service (QoS) requirements on individual links. When the objective is only sum-rate maximization without QoS guarantees, we develop an analytic solution to decide optimal power allocation for a two-TX–RX-pair problem. We also develop a low-complexity iterative algorithm for a three-TX–RX-pair problem. For a generic N>\3 TX–RX pair problem, we develop two low-complexity suboptimal power-allocation algorithms. The first algorithm is based on the idea of making clusters of two or three TX–RX pairs and then leveraging the power-allocation results obtained for the two- and three-TX–RX-pair problems. The second algorithm is developed by using a high signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) approximation, and this algorithm can be also implemented in a distributed manner by individual TXs. We then consider the same problem but with additional QoS guarantees for individual links. Traffic offloading via device-to-device communications is expected to play a major role to meet the exponential data traffic growth in wireless networks. In this paper, we focus on the problem of user capacity maximization in ultra-dense heterogeneous networks with device-to-device cooperation, where a large number of users in a given geographical area request common data content, such as video on demand streaming, with strict quality of service guarantees. We aim at finding the best strategy for delivering the content either over long range connectivity from the access points or short range connectivity from peer mobile terminals while meeting a target rate per served user. We formulate the multiuser resource management problem as an optimization problem including traffic offloading and channel allocation considering a very high user density reaching up to 1.75 users per square meter. We extend the system model to include mobile terminals acting as content owners by having the content cached locally, in order to further enhance the network capacity and coverage. We then propose an iterative resource management solution, which first solves the optimization subproblem of traffic offloading with orthogonal channels, and then optimally allocates channels to the transmitters with minimized interference due to channel reuse. We also propose efficient suboptimal hierarchical tree-based algorithms that operate in real time with dynamic and fast solutions for ultra-dense networks. For performance evaluation, we consider a realistic scenario consisting of a stadium topology with thousands of mobile terminals active simultaneously. We generate results as a function of a wide range of system parameters, and demonstrate that the proposed algorithms achieve near-optimal performance with notably low time complexity. Device-to-device (D2D) communications bring significant benefits to mobile multimedia services in local areas. However, these potential advantages hinge on intelligent resource sharing between potential D2D pairs and cellular users. In this paper, we study the problem of energy-efficient uplink resource sharing over mobile D2D multimedia communications underlaying cellular networks with multiple potential D2D pairs and cellular users. We first construct a novel analytical model of energy efficiency for different sharing modes, which takes into account quality-of-service (QoS) requirements and the spectrum utilization of each user. Then, we formulate the energy-efficient resource sharing problem as a nontransferable coalition formation game, with the characteristic function that accounts for the gains in terms of energy efficiency and the costs in terms of mutual interference. Moreover, we develop a distributed coalition formation algorithm based on the merge-and-split rule and the Pareto order. The distributed solution is characterized through novel stability notions and can be adapted to user mobility. From it, we obtain the energy-efficient sharing strategy on joint mode selection, uplink reusing allocation, and power management. Recently, operators have resorted to femtocell networks to enhance indoor coverage and increase system capacity. Nevertheless, to successfully deploy such solution, efficient resource-allocation algorithms and interference mitigation techniques should be deployed. The new applications delivered by operators require large amounts of network bandwidth. Although, some customers may want to pay more in exchange for a better quality of service (QoS), some others need fewer resources and can be charged accordingly. Hence, we consider an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA) femtocell network serving both QoS-constrained high-priority (HP) and best-effort (BE) users. Our objective is to satisfy a maximum number of HP users while serving BE users as well as possible. This multiobjective optimization problem is NP-hard. For this aim, we propose in this paper a new resource-allocation and admission control algorithm, which is called QoS-based femtocell resource allocation (Q-FCRA), based on clustering and taking into account QoS requirements. We show through extensive network simulations that our proposal outperforms two state-of-the-art schemes [centralized-dynamic frequency planning (C-DFP) and distributed random access (DRA)] and our previous proposal, i.e., femtocell resource allocation (FCRA), in both low- and high-density networks. Device-to-device (D2D) communication has attracted substantial research attention recently, due to its potential to improve coverage, spectrum efficiency, and energy efficiency within the existing cellular infrastructure. One major challenge for spectrum resource sharing in D2D underlay lies in the mutual interference between cellular user equipments (CUEs) and D2D user equipments (DUEs). Considering this mutual interference constraint, this work investigates the problem of optimal matching of D2D links and CUEs to form spectrum-sharing partners to maximize ergodic sum rates under transmit power and outage constraints. Unlike previous works, full channel-state information (CSI) is not required. To solve the resulting high-complexity problem, candidate DUE sets are first narrowed down according to required outage probability constraints, which are used to construct a simplified bipartite graph. The weight of the bipartite graph is characterized as the maximization of ergodic sum rate of the associated D2D and cellular links under outage constraints for which a low-complexity algorithm is proposed to solve the nonconvex problem. After constructing the bipartite graph, the Hungarian algorithm is used to determine the optimal pairing between D2D links and CUEs. Efficient distributed resource allocation and users to cells assignment over a heterogeneous integrated wireless environment is addressed, where multiple-access technologies coexist and cooperate toward achieving network-wide quality-of-service (QoS)-aware utility-based performance optimization. The integrated network is viewed as a global optimizer under appropriate intracell resource allocation constraints. Multiaccess diversity is addressed by setting a user-centric service-aware goal, thus maximizing users' QoS-aware service performance satisfaction, as expressed through properly assigned utility functions. The integrated network utility maximization problem is treated through a two-level dual-decomposition methodology, leading to a low-complexity distributed iterative subgradient algorithm for attaining a network-wide near-optimal operation point. Extensive numerical results verify the analytical claims, demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework, and illustrate that significant performance gains can be achieved over popular existing resource allocation schemes. We propose an efficient resource allocation scheme for the downlink of orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA)-based two-hop relay systems. The proposed scheme reuses the subchannels within a single cell in the frequency-selective fading environment by allocating a subchannel to multiple links simultaneously. We first formulate a preliminary subchannel allocation problem in consideration of the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements for both real-time traffic and nonreal-time traffic. We also design an efficient postprocessing algorithm that modifies the solution obtained by solving the preliminary problem so that it can be used in practical OFDMA systems. We propose a transmitter beamformer design technique for a spectrum-sharing network with mixed quality-of-service requirement. In particular, the proposed algorithm has the ability to jointly design multiple beamformers, so that a specific subset of users attains certain target signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) whereas the SINRs of the remaining users are balanced subject to multiple linear constraints. The design framework considered is applicable to both the overlay cognitive radio network (CRN) and the underlay CRN; however, the algorithm is described for the example of an underlay CRN to include a very general mathematical framework. We maximize the worst-case users' SINR of a particular set of users while satisfying the target SINRs of the remaining users subject to the total transmission power and the interference leakage constraints. This algorithm is solved using the uplink–downlink duality and subgradient method. The condition for convergence is analytically derived.
