This article focuses on the importance of groundwater quality in coastal areas, particularly in China. It highlights the impact of geogenic contaminants and human-induced pollutants on groundwater quality, which is crucial for sustaining agriculture, industries, and drinking water services. The research papers in this special issue explore various aspects of groundwater quality, including the occurrence of fluoride and nitrate in agricultural areas, the impact of land use on groundwater quality, the natural background levels of contaminants, and the hydrochemical characteristics of groundwater in different regions. The studies suggest that agricultural contamination and infiltration of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater are significant factors affecting groundwater quality in coastal areas. The findings recommend measures to address nitrate contamination and seawater intrusion, and emphasize the importance of considering organic contaminants in coastal groundwater.
