Covid-19 has continued to affect book reviewing this year, as reviewers whom we had to remind wrote us back saying everything from "I'm stuck in Dakar" or "I crushed my right index finger in an anchor mishap two months ago [and] ... typing was problematic for a number of weeks" to "in the midst of the pandemic I fell and broke my leg in two places", not to mention people's frequent child-care/remote learning challenges (for some books, we had to identify and ask as many as nine potential reviewers before one agreed) or the difficulties of getting books from publishers to reviewers in pandemic-bombed Brazil. The Troubles have spread heartbreak and misery across Northern Ireland, mainland Britain, and Europe for 50 years, claiming the lives of thousands and victimizing tens of thousands. With each death, physical, and psychological injury there are stories of a father, son, brother, sister, daughter, and mother. Human security encapsulates the lives of these people and examines their experiences front and center, and for the first time this sentiment will be adopted in an academic paper to analyze casualty counting in Northern Ireland. This study demonstrates that the Northern Irish Troubles are not just suitable for casualty recording but are also in desperate need of it, as current casualty recording facilities are inadequate in tackling victimization and providing closure to grief-stricken families. This paper analyzes the theoretical aspects of casualty counting and inspects human rights laws in Northern Ireland, seeking to remedy current issues of victim hierarchies in database inclusions, incomplete timelines, and limited accessibility to records, in order to provide Troubles victims with the recognition and answers they yearn for. The overarching theme of this study is that effective casualty recording is a steppingstone to bridging the community divide in Northern Ireland, bringing accountability and ultimately ending the war. The following paper aims at reconstructing the emotional universe of the main character of the novel My Struggle in relation to a father figure. Counting on previous research on affective narratology, the paper suggests a way of reading in which the father-son relationship lays central and it shows how it organizes not only the thematic universe of the characters but also the narrative structure of the book. The construction of the main character in the second part of Book One is analyzed according to several scenarios that follow him pursuing different goals after the death of his father. Introduction: Social mobility is considered as an important indicator of the economic development of a country. However, it varies widely across geographical regions and social groups in developing countries like Bangladesh. This paper intends to evaluate the intergenerational mobility in Bangladesh across generations. Methods and materials: This paper considers a nationally representative sample survey of 8,403 respondents (rural: 5,436 and urban: 2,967). The male and female respondents aged 23 years and above were included in the sample. The education attainment of a son or daughter as compared to their father's education level was considered as the measure of intergenerational mobility. Transition probability matrix and different social mobility indices were used to find out the intergenerational education mobility in Bangladesh. Results: The findings reveal that approximately three-fourth (74.5%) of the respondents attained formal education, while more than half (58.3%) of the respondents' father was illiterate. The educational status of the respondents and their father who lived in urban areas was relatively better than who lived in rural areas. It is also observed that 91.2% and 81.6% of the intergenerational class movement was upward among sons and daughters respectively. The probability of a higher educated father will have a higher educated child is higher in urban areas than in rural areas of Bangladesh. The intergenerational mobility is higher in the primary, secondary, and higher secondary educational levels, though the illiterate and higher education levels are the least mobile classes. In addition, the limiting probabilities reveal that the chance of sending sons to schools by an illiterate father is less as compared to their daughters. Such difference is more obvious in the urban areas, i.e., it is highly likely that sons of the illiterate father are also illiterate. Conclusion: Bangladesh has been progressing remarkably in recent years. To keep the pace of the ongoing economic development in the country, it is necessary to give more attention to the illiterate people especially the girls who live in rural areas. The authors anticipate that the findings will be helpful for the policymakers as the relationship between inequality and intergenerational mobility is vital for several aspects of the economic development of a country. Objective: The paper aims to explore the barriers to father involvement in family social work at the personal, cultural, and structural levels, and their interconnectedness to answer the main research question of how gendered constructions of mothers and fathers in social work affect the involvement of fathers in interventions. Background: This paper contributes to debates about fathers in social work by examining gendered constructions of fathers in social services for families with children in the Czech Republic. The problem is viewed from the perspective of social constructionism, anti-oppressive practice, and the whole family approach. Method: To meet the objective, we used a qualitative research strategy. 44 in-depth interviews with social workers, mothers, and fathers were carried out. After that, three focus groups with 21 social workers were formed. Results: The results show that mothers and fathers are treated differently in social work, and femininity and masculinity are perceived as dichotomous opposites. This hinders fathers' involvement in family services and puts responsibility for solving family problems to mothers. This paper describes the role of intergenerational processes in increasing or reducing multidimensional inequality in Indio Guayas, a low-income peripheral settlement in Guayaquil, Ecuador. It also examines the importance of family social capital, irrespective of spatial location, as against household social capital in these processes. This longitudinal case study included a dataset on trends from 1978 through 1992 to 2004, in-depth studies over the decades, and further comparative research in 2018. The anthropological narrative is provided by the voices of three women and their families over 40 years. In 2018, interviews my son and I undertook for the documentary film Calle K demonstrated the importance of family social capital in the intergenerational reciprocity among mothers, daughters, fathers and sons, while illustrating different intergenerational trajectories addressing the challenges of inequality at this micro-level. Bonaventure's epistemology is partly based on his Trinitarian theology. This paper investigates the Trinitarian connotations in this epistemology and their broader significance. Like the divine Father, any object of human understanding is liberally generating a likeness of itself: the species. Apprehending the form of the object through this species is an essential feature of human knowledge for Bonaventure. More fundamentally, the human soul itself is structured according to the Augustinian Triad of memoria, intellectus and voluntas, and the transcendentals of being correspond to the human soul's structure: unum, verum and bonum. Both the human being and the transcendentals of being originate ultimately from the Trinitarian life or actuality, which is a self-relation in truth and love: The Father generates a Word and both together spirate the nexus between Father and Son: the Holy Spirit. Bonaventure's notion of Trinitarian actuality as it is imaged in the human and being itself can help deepen Aquinas' metaphysical notion of created esse as the actuality of all acts: An enriched notion of Trinitarian actuality necessarily involves, just as Hugo of St. Victor's notion of love, a life of personal self-communication and reception, in the context of which the speech of divine 'suffering' makes sense, and does not involve mutability. Understanding Trinitarian actuality as the life of love exemplary for creation might open up vistas for a mutual fertilization between Thomistic metaphysics and Bonaventure's Trinitarian theology, so as to further the development of a Trinitarian ontology without confusing the distinction between Philosophy and Theology. During the late twentieth century, crisis of masculinity appears in all societal settings; at work, at school, on the street and in the family. The crisis of fatherhood, anxiety, power and abuse create the crisis of masculinity. As a concrete example of the masculinity crisis Jez Butterworth's most discussed stage play Mojo was first performed at London's Royal Court in 1995. This paper takes Mojo under observation as a frontier play depicting a male identity that portrays rock and roll culture, gangland violence and male Soho gangsters of the 1950s. With these concepts in mind, this paper analyses the contemporary anxieties related to masculinity through witty, absurd dialogues and homoerotic relationships of this striking play. What contributed to the fact that the concept of innate human dignity based on "human rights", which dates back from the feudal social order, has not as yet fully come to life in Serbia as far as women are concerned. What social circumstances contributed to the Romanius vitae acnecis to outlive centuries and take root especially in Serbia, only under a different name - that of femicide? This notion has been defined as "gender based murder of women, girls, and babies of female sex by persons of the male sex". The murderers in cases of femicide include partners (ex/current, spouses or extramarital), family members or relatives: father, father-in-law, son, son-in-law, etc. Both expert and general public wan der whether enforcing more stringent norms by authorities or acting towards changing the consciousness of the abusers or both at the same time, can con tribute to eradicating this devastating phenome non in the 21st century. This paper presents the combination of deep and shallow features (multi-view features) using the proposed metric learning (SILD+WCCN/LR) approach for kinship verification. Our approach based on an automatic and more efficient two-step learning into deep/shallow information. First, five layers for deep features and five shallow features (i.e. texture and shape), representing more precisely facial features involved in kinship relations (Father-Son, Father-Daughter, Mother-Son, and Mother-Daughter) are used to train the proposed Side-Information based Linear Discriminant Analysis integrating Within Class Covariance Normalization (SILD+WCCN) method. Then, each of the features projected through the discriminative subspace of the proposed SILD+WCCN metric learning method. Finally, a Logistic Regression (LR) method is used to fuse the six scores of the projected features. To show the effectiveness of our SILD+WCNN method, we do some experiments on LFW database. In term of evaluation, the proposed automatic Facial Kinship Verification (FKV) is compared with existing ones to show its effectiveness, using two challenging kinship databases. The experimental results showed the superiority of our FKV against existing ones and reached verification rates of 86.20% and 88.59% for bi-subject matching on the KinFaceW-II and TSKinFace databases, respectively. Verification rates for tri-subject matching of 90.94% and 91.23% on the available TSKinFace database for Father-Mother-Son and Father-Mother-Daughter, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The comment of Jerome in his letter to Demetrias (Epistula 130) that Innocent I, bishop of Rome from 402 to 417, was the son of his predecessor Anastasius I has been taken at face value by a number of commentators and has been repeated, often without reference to sources, on any number of Internet web sites. The fact that Liber Pontificialis offers a different parentage for Innocent is often ignored. This paper seeks to reconcile and evaluate the two accounts. The argument advanced here is that in Jerome's highly rhetorical letter the reference is to be understood metaphorically and not literally, given that the use of familial terms of address was common in early Christian letters to indicate a hierarchical rather than a biological relationship. Jerome was asserting that Innocent had been a deacon of Rome under Anastasius. Even beyond this common usage, in this letter such metaphor was part of a rhetorical strategy by which he sought to persuade a powerful Roman senatorial family to back his anti-Pelagian campaign and to use their influence on Innocent to do the same. Children have been affected by recent changes in the fundamental childrearing institution, the nuclear family. Boys are in a precarious position as a result of these changes. This paper first assesses the current condition of the nuclear family. Next, some of the features of the new boyhood in Western culture are discussed. Finally, the impact of the missing father on the well-being of boys' lives is examined; father hunger is a critical consequence of the destabilization of the nuclear family. Mentoring remains crucial to raising healthy males. This article describes the Christological themes that Jerome of Stridon took up in his teaching and which are found in the Letters. The article consists of three parts: the relationship between the Father and the Son, the Deity of Jesus Christ and the Humanity of Jesus Christ. They are related to the defence of the truths of faith about the Trinity and to the formulation of Christological doctrine. At the same time, they show the Monk of Bethlehem as a concerned defender of a right theology. For much of their childhood and adult life, the twelve surviving children of William the Silent were separated linguistically and geographically. Many of the children forged important relationships with male primary carers who were not their biological parents. This paper explores the children's correspondence with their biological father William and with paternal figures to understand competing forms of familial authority among William's children. This paper places particular interest on analysis of the gendered negotiation of paternal bonds in the letters of William's sons and daughters, as they established multiple relationships with father figures during their childhood. Do parents have preferences over the gender of their children, and if so, does this have negative consequences for daughters versus sons? In this paper, we show that child gender affects the marital status, family structure, and fertility of a significant number of American families. Overall, a first-born daughter is significantly less likely to be living with her father compared to a first-born son. Three factors are important in explaining this gap. First, women with first-born daughters are less likely to marry. Strikingly, we also find evidence that the gender of a child in utero affects shotgun marriages. Among women who have taken an ultrasound test during pregnancy, mothers who have a girl are less likely to be married at delivery than those who have a boy. Second, parents who have first-born girls are significantly more likely to be divorced. Third, after a divorce, fathers are much more likely to obtain custody of sons compared to daughters. These three factors have serious negative income and educational consequences for affected children. What explains these findings? In the last part of the paper, we turn to the relationship between child gender and fertility to help sort out parental gender bias from competing explanations for our findings. We show that the number of children is significantly higher in families with a first-born girl. Our estimates indicate that first-born daughters caused approximately 5500 more births per year, for a total of 220,000 more births over the past 40 years. Taken individually, each piece of empirical evidence is not sufficient to establish the existence of parental gender bias. But taken together, the weight of the evidence supports the notion that parents in the U.S. favour boys over girls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper opens with Mary Beth Rose's question, "Where are the mothers in Shakespeare?" Although Shakespeare's plays often dramatize the emotional bonds between fathers and sons or fathers and daughters, mothers are generally presented as threatening, dangerous, or remarkably absent. Although there are no mothers in As You Like It, embedded within the structure and 'sounding' of Arden there is a powerful maternal voice, the Latin anima or Greek psyche as animating spirit or breath of the greenwood. Ironically access to the maternal voice can be understood through Julia Kristeva's notion of 'the imaginary father,' a 'mother-father-conglomerate,' which she revisions from Freud's 'father of individual prehistory.' Unlike what most readers may think, such a 'father' is not a father but a metaphorical process - a 'becoming' - offering a means to consider how psychoanalytic approaches can lead us to current theories of embodied cognition, ecofeminism, and the ecological nature of play. This paper analyses the figural stucco in the Villa Hvězda (1555--1563) in Prague, depicting Aeneas with his father Anchises on his back and accompanied by his son Ascanius and his wife, Creusa. In numerous 16th century representations, Creusa always walks behind Aeneas, and Ascanius is always accompanying Aeneas. In the Villa Hvězda, the protagonists of the Flight from Troy are Aeneas and his wife, Creusa. Aeneas carries Anchises on his back, and in front of him, Creusa leads their son Ascanius. This anomaly calls for an explanation, and it may be this, that Creusa allegorically stands for Queen Anne as a model of a pious matriarch of the Habsburgs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explains the negative correlation between the days of work reported by fathers in rural Pakistani households and the incomes earned by their coresident adult sons, thereby contributing to research on the benefits from intergenerational coresidence. I find that the decline in fathers' days of work that accompanies increases in sons' incomes primarily results because such income is used to finance expenditures on household public goods, such as consumer durables and ceremonies. This paper investigates the introduction of free universal secondary education in England and Wales in 1944. It focuses on its effects in relation to a prime long-term goal of pre-war Boards of Education. This was to open secondary school education to children of all social backgrounds on equal terms. Adopting a difference-in-difference estimation approach, we do not find any evidence that boys and girls from less well-off home backgrounds displayed improved chances of attending selective secondary schools. Nor, for the most part, did they show increased probabilities of gaining formal school qualifications. One possible exception in this latter respect relates to boys with unskilled fathers. In the early Qing dynasty, the Jesuit missionary Louis de Poirot's (He Qingtai 賀清泰, 1735–1814) Chinese rendition of the Bible, Guxin Shengjing (The Ancient and New Testament) (古新聖經), reshaped the figure of Abraham. Contrary to the depiction by Chinese Jews of the era, de Poirot portrayed Abraham as a sage, resonating with the traditional Chinese concept of the "five cardinal relationships" (rulers to subjects, fathers to sons, husbands to wives, among siblings, and between friends), and an exemplar of virtue and faith, devoid of human flaws. Key differences emerged in translating Abraham's name, religious stature, and national identity, influenced by distinct belief systems, attitudes towards Confucian culture, and political dynamics. Analyzing these Catholic and Jewish perspectives on Abraham enhances our understanding of the Bible's contextualization and informs contemporary religious localization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite continuing progress, men remain underrepresented in childcare, domestic labor, and other care work. Because parental leave is discussed as a gateway to increasing men's childcare engagement, we aimed to gain insights into predictors of men's parental leave-taking intentions during the transition to parenthood. Using outcomes on a continuum from behavioral preferences to more behavior-oriented measures, we examine how masculinity and fatherhood beliefs as well as social support become relevant during men's formation of their leave-taking intentions. Planned analyses of data collected from 143 expectant fathers in Belgium and Germany revealed that the support men perceive from their partners for taking leave predicts their parental leave-taking desire, intention, and planned length of leave. Moreover, men's conception of a prototypical man, especially in terms of agency, was linked to their desire to take leave. Against expectations, father role attitudes and workplace support did not emerge as relevant predictors of men's intended leave-taking. Results of exploratory analyses suggest that care engagement of peers, expected backlash, and self-efficacy beliefs additionally play a role in men's intended leave-taking. We discuss parental leave as a negotiation process within couples and review the role of men's normative environment for their intended leave-taking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Studying the influencing factors and interventions of mental health in rural China has important practical significance for promoting personal development and social progress. Using the 2016 waves of the China Family Panel Studies data, this paper examined the effect of adult sons' marriage squeeze on parents' mental health in rural China and its corresponding mechanisms. Our study showed a significant negative association between adult sons' marriage squeeze and the mental health status of rural parents. Moreover, the negative association of adult sons' marriage squeeze with mental health is larger for female parents, parents who are less than 60 years old and parents living with children. In addition, we investigated possible mechanisms of the effect, including intergenerational support, intergenerational relationship and neighborhood relationship, and that adult sons' marriage squeeze mainly damages the mental health of rural parents by increasing the downstream intergenerational support of rural parents and worsening intergenerational and neighborhood relationships. Medicine and physicians in Dubrovnik during the last two centuries, i.e. in the period after the dissolution of the Republic of Dubrovnik by Napoleon's Army, have attracted less interest among medical historians. In this paper, the lives and medical careers of two physicians from Dubrovnik, father and son, Baldo and Ante Bibica, have been reconstructed from the end of the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century by searching through the contemporary medical journals and newspapers as well as private archives of the members of family Bibica. Baldo Bibica graduated medicine in Vienna and spent the whole professional life as a municipal physician, at first, in the places in the vicinity of Dubrovnik and from 1903 in Gruž. Ante Bibica studied medicine in Graz and in Zagreb to become the first person from Dubrovnik promoted at the School of Medicine, Zagreb University. He specialized in dermatovenereology in Vienna and worked, as a specialist, in Dubrovnik. They both were active in the professional medical societies (at local and national levels) and were influential in the social life in Dubrovnik. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multi-robots can perform complex tasks such as exploration, foraging, and formation. Efficient communication between robots can contribute to the accomplishment of collective tasks through efficient message exchange. This paper proposes a strategy based on the message's propagation technique, Wave Swarm, for the formation task inspired by the Traveling Salesman Problem. The Wave Swarm communication approach uses the concept of wave propagation for message exchange between neighbors, establishing a Father and Son relationship between robots. However, different pairs of Father and Son robots can impact the simulation time, the average distance traveled by each robot, and the number of messages exchanged during the formation task. Thus, given a random distribution of robots into a swarm, we model the problem of assigning one position and route for each robot to achieve its place in the formation as a Traveling Salesman Problem. The routes resulting from the TSP solution establish a new parental relationship between the robots in the swarm. We performed preliminary experiments to define the technique used in the TSP resolution. We tested reinforcement learning and the genetic algorithm using the TSPLIB95 library. Thus, we develop a strategy for formation tasks based on Wave Swarm and TSP solved with reinforcement learning. We adopted the leader–follower approach in an unknown environment to validate the proposal. The results show the behavior of different sizes of robot groups for various desired shapes. Experiments with the robot simulator CoppeliaSim (V-REP) validate the proposed strategy and highlight its efficiency and robustness while running the formation task. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chinese scholars are increasingly interested in Jewish philosophy and culture and the philosophical concept of redemption. That is bringing about more and more studies on Walter Benjamin and Emmanuel Levinas, two of the most well-known Jewish philosophers. In these studies, conducted with different approaches and from diverse perspectives, Chinese scholars are attempting to connect the philosophers' theories with some of their Chinese counterparts. Overall, they are well received or Sinicized, but in different fields, and to different extent, deserving an in-depth comparative study. Obviously a large amount of works have been produced in attempts to have dialogues with Benjamin and Levinas ' s philosophies, but they are in need of some general commentary and reflection. For example, the political allegories and expectations in Benjamin ' s philosophy of redemption have been eliminated, while his aesthetics has been repetitively studied in apolitical ways. Similarly, Levinas is much too conservatively received, and the relationship between Levinas's ethics of "embracing the other" and qin qin（亲亲）in Confucian ethics also needs further examination. In some of the earliest Chinese works written by Catholic missionaries in the late Ming Dynasty, St. Augustine became associated with the mystery of the Trinity. When explaining the Trinity to Chinese believers, missionaries would often use an analogy of the mens (mind) and its activities in Augustine's theory of Imago Dei, drawing parallels between "the One" and "the Three". In the Ming and Qing periods, Augustine's mental analogy gave rise to two approaches: the "Augustinian-Ignatian" and the "Augustinian-Thomistic". The former, which was the mainstream interpretation, linked "Mind: memory-understanding-love" to "God: the Father-the Son-the Holy Spirit", using "the word generated by memory" to represent "the Son begotten by the Father" and "love proceeded from memory and understanding" as an analogy to "the Holy Spirit proceeded from both the Father and the Son". The latter, more of a minority interpretation, correlated "mind-understanding-love" to "the Father-the Son-the Holy Spirit", using "word generated by mind" to represent "the Son generated by the Father", and "love proceeded from mind and word" as an analogy to "the Holy Spirit proceeded from both the Father and the Son". The former was mainly adhered to by the Jesuits and the Augustinians, while the latter was favored by the Dominicans. Growing up in a thwarted relationship with a father perceived as lacking in meeting the basic nurturing needs of the father-son relationship disrupts a boy's normative development and may leave him fixated in a regressive state. This also impacts the mother-son relationship. This paper uncovers obscure layers of the male psyche and argues that a regressive state renders the grown man highly susceptible to developing narcissistic tendencies in adulthood. These tendencies are likely to affect interpersonal relationships including impotence and sexual performance with women. In his book Thinking, Fast and Slow, Daniel Kahneman presented a model of human cognition based on two modes or 'systems' of thinking: system 1 thinking that is fast and intuitive and system 2 thinking that is slow and tedious. This paper proposes a framework for applying Kahneman's model to designing based on the function-behaviour-structure ontology. This paper uses the 2003 American Time Use Survey to examine the effects of child gender on paternal time with children in married two-parent families. The results show that fathers of boys invest more time in children than those with only daughters and reduce their leisure time without children to do so. Boys get more of this time than girls in all-girl families and compared to their own sisters. Girls with brothers receive more of fathers' time than girls with only sisters, but this is primarily in television watching, so whether this advantages them is open to question. In this paper, I examine how Scotus and Ockham try to solve the following problem. If different kinds of constituents contribute some difference in kind to the things they constitute, then the divine Father and Son should be different in kind because they are constituted by at least some constituents that are different in kind (namely, fatherhood and sonship). However, if the Father and Son are different in kind, the Son's production will be equivocal, and equivocal products are typically less perfect than their producers. Therefore, the Son must be subordinate to the Father. In response, Scotus argues that different kinds of constituents do not necessarily result in different kinds of things, but Ockham rejects this, arguing instead that although the Father and Son are different in kind, they are still equal in perfection because of their identity with the divine essence. This paper provides a description of and rationale for components of a theoretically based conceptual model that guided the development and implementation of the Fathers and Sons Intervention Program. Using a community-based participatory research process, this intervention was designed to prevent risky health behaviors through strengthening father-son relationships among non-resident African-American fathers and their pre-adolescent sons.
