Desktop-publishing software and hardware has progressed to the point that many widely used word-processing programs are capable of printing high-quality digital images with many shades of gray from black to white. Accordingly, it should be relatively easy to print digital medical images on paper for reports, instructional materials, and in research notes. Components were assembled that were necessary for extracting image data from medical imaging devices and converting the data to a form usable by word-processing software. A system incorporating these components was implemented in a medical setting and has been operating for 18 months. The use of this system by medical staff has been monitored.

A JRSM reader recently told me that she was switching back to the print publication because visiting the website (jrsm.rsmjournals.com) to read JRSM wasn't part of her routine and was never likely to be. The only way to read JRSM, then, was to pick up the print edition. We know visitors to journal websites are usually seeking specific information, a particular article that they have discovered via a web search. They may not necessarily be regular readers of your journal, and have no particular loyalty to it. Reading one article is unlikely to convert them into regular readers. The first challenge for journals, therefore, is to develop online services that will be valuable to readers and are not possible in print. Despite radio, television, the Internet, and now Kindle, people still enjoy reading a book or a journal in print. Will print journals ever disappear entirely? Many will die – eventually – but plenty will survive to satisfy our desire for touching words on a page. The journals that endure will publish much else besides research. They will major on editorials, essays and reviews. They will synthesize knowledge for a community instead of publishing random bites of information. They will also need to entertain. The second challenge for journals, therefore, is to develop a print version that will be valuable to readers without publishing research. None of this is new, these prophecies have been written for more than a decade, but the challenge is more immediate. Online-only journals, many with an author-pays model like JRSM Short Reports (shortreports.rsmjournals.com), are attracting a larger number of submissions. Their value is in publishing research quickly and being less selective about their publication policies. JRSM Short Reports is now on PubMed Central and we have applied for full indexing. The online world is moving rapidly in terms of publication of research. Meanwhile, the print world is more sedate but it needs to quicken its speed of change. Bigger, richer, weekly journals have sufficient resources to adapt and have an in built inertia that can weather the winds of change. The predicament is more acute for smaller journals, and their battle for survival, because of the laws of economics, will become more acute. These are dangerous times. JRSM floats somewhere between the big beasts of the publishing ocean and the minnows battling for survival, although our aspiration is to swim with big beasts rather than be consumed like minnows. As such, we are considering the next stage in the evolution of both print and online versions of JRSM. We have many ideas for development but we welcome suggestions from JRSM readers about how the journal might better serve their needs in print and online while positioning itself cleverly for the future of medical journals.

The trends in medical publishing are towards electronic versions and the use of the English language. The objective of this study was to compare general practitioners' ability to retain information when reading on paper versus on screen, and in their mother tongue versus in the English.Randomized controlled trial of 114 Scandinavian general practitioners. They read a review article for 10 minutes either on paper/in English, on screen/in English, on paper/in their mother tongue, or on screen/in their mother tongue. Afterwards they completed a questionnaire with six open questions from the article. The main outcome measure was sum score on a scale from 0 (no correct answers) to 13 (all questions answered correctly).We found no difference between readers of paper and screen versions (median (interquartile range) 4 (2-6) vs. 4 (2-5), p = 0.97). Those who read their mother tongue scored significantly higher than those who read English (4 (3-6) vs. 3 (2-4), p = 0.01).The medium (paper vs. screen) does not influence the ability of general practitioners to retain medical information. Doctors best retain medical information when reading it in their mother tongue.

This presentation offers a side-by-side comparison of the publication processes for traditional monographs versus complex interactive digital projects. Prepared by Stanford University Press whose 6-year Mellon-funded digital publishing initiative is coming to a close in December 2023, the presentation reflects on the highly collaborative processes digital publications require.

This poster reports on the experiences of launching a publisher-independent OA journal, the Journal of Computational Literary Studies (JCLS) and reflects the workflow established so far. It also discusses openess as a practice of opening up diversified communication spaces with regard to community involvement, peer reviewing, and the publishing workflow.

This article is based on the analysis of the practices and representations of publishers who attend the fairs of printed art held in the city of São Paulo in recent years. Our goal is to understanding the sociotechnical vectors that organize these practices and the materialities of the editorial objects published and marketed there. At the heart of the analysis is the relationship between the technicities (codex, paper, and print) mobilized by these publishers and certain conceptions of the past, present, and future that are inscribed in their individual and collective investments, between the "return to the artisanal" and the pretension to build a viable future for the publication. It is concluded that the new forms of fetishization of the printed book are conditioned by both the technical evolutions provided by digital technologies and by the programmatic denial of the conventional book identified with the mainstream publishing market., O presente artigo parte da análise das práticas e representações de publicadores que frequentam as feiras de arte impressa realizadas na cidade de São Paulo nos últimos anos para compreender os vetores sociotécnicos que organizam essas práticas e as materialidades dos objetos editoriais que aí se publicam e comercializam. Coloca-se, no centro da análise, a relação entre as tecnicidades (o códice, o papel e a impressão) mobilizadas por esses publicadores e certas concepções de passado, presente e futuro inscritas em seus investimentos individuais e coletivos, com destaque para a tensão entre o “retorno ao artesanal” e a pretensão de construir um futuro viável para a publicação. Conclui-se que as novas formas de fetichização do livro impresso estão condicionadas tanto pelas evoluções técnicas proporcionadas pelas tecnologias digitais como pela negação programática do livro convencional, identificado com o mercado editorial mainstream.

Social, economic, and cultural globalization and the consumer society have enabled science to definitively participate in people’s daily lives. Human knowledge has advanced at an extraordinary rate; science has become present and imperative; and never has more been expected from scientific advances than now. Here I addressed answers to the following questions: What is the importance of science? How can science be correctly communicated? What can we learn from comparing articles from Mendel and from Watson & Crick? How is a scientific paper to be written? How are target journals for publishing articles to be chosen? What is the impact factor of a journal and the h-index of a researcher, and what importance do they have? What is the role of authors, editors, and reviewers in the publication process? What are the main scientific databases? What are predatory journals/publishers and their consequences for science? What are particular features of articles in the area of plant breeding? Finally, in what directions is science moving, considering that it has come to stay?

We deploy a combination of reinforcement learning-based approaches and more traditional optimization techniques to identify optimal protocols for population transfer in a multi-level system. We constrain our strategy to the case of fixed coupling rates but time-varying detunings, a situation that would simplify considerably the implementation of population transfer in relevant experimental platforms, such as semiconducting and superconducting ones. Our approach is able to explore the space of possible control protocols to reveal the existence of efficient protocols that, remarkably, differ from (and can be superior to) standard Raman, stimulated Raman adiabatic passage or other adiabatic schemes. The new protocols that we identify are robust against both energy losses and dephasing.

Objective: Abstracts submitted to meetings are subject to less rigorous peer review than full-text manuscripts. This study aimed to explore the publication outcome of abstracts presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) annual meeting. Methods: Abstracts presented at the 2008 AAO meeting were analyzed. Each presented abstract was sought via PubMed to identify if it had been published as a full-text manuscript. The publication outcome, journal impact factor (IF), and time to publication were recorded. Results: A total of 690 abstracts were reviewed, of which 39.1% were subsequently published. They were published in journals with a median IF of 2.9 (range 0–7.2) and a median publication time of 426 days (range 0–2,133 days). A quarter were published in the journal Ophthalmology, with a shorter time to publication (median 282 vs. 534 days, p =0.003). Quantifying and comparing the scientific output of researchers has become critical for governments, funding agencies and universities. Comparison by reputation and direct assessment of contributions to the field is no longer possible, as the number of scientists increases and traditional definitions about scientific fields become blurred. The h-index is often used for comparing scientists, but has several well-documented shortcomings. In this paper, we introduce a new index for measuring and comparing the publication records of scientists: the pagerank-index (symbolised as π). The index uses a version of pagerank algorithm and the citation networks of papers in its computation, and is fundamentally different from the existing variants of h-index because it considers not only the number of citations but also the actual impact of each citation. We adapt two approaches to demonstrate the utility of the new index. Firstly, we use a simulation model of a community of authors, whereby we create various ‘groups’ of authors which are different from each other in inherent publication habits, to show that the pagerank-index is fairer than the existing indices in three distinct scenarios: (i) when authors try to ‘massage’ their index by publishing papers in low-quality outlets primarily to self-cite other papers (ii) when authors collaborate in large groups in order to obtain more authorships (iii) when authors spend most of their time in producing genuine but low quality publications that would massage their index. Secondly, we undertake two real world case studies: (i) the evolving author community of quantum game theory, as defined by Google Scholar (ii) a snapshot of the high energy physics (HEP) theory research community in arXiv. In both case studies, we find that the list of top authors vary very significantly when h-index and pagerank-index are used for comparison. We show that in both cases, authors who have collaborated in large groups and/or published less impactful papers tend to be comparatively favoured by the h-index, whereas the pagerank-index highlights authors who have made a relatively small number of definitive contributions, or written papers which served to highlight the link between diverse disciplines, or typically worked in smaller groups. Thus, we argue that the pagerank-index is an inherently fairer and more nuanced metric to quantify the publication records of scientists compared to existing measures.

Background The long-term availability of online Web services is of utmost importance to ensure reproducibility of analytical results. However, because of lack of maintenance following acceptance, many servers become unavailable after a short period of time. Our aim was to monitor the accessibility and the decay rate of published Web services as well as to determine the factors underlying trends changes. Methods We searched PubMed to identify publications containing Web server-related terms published between 1994 and 2017. Automatic and manual screening was used to check the status of each Web service. Kruskall–Wallis, Mann–Whitney and Chi-square tests were used to evaluate various parameters, including availability, accessibility, platform, origin of authors, citation, journal impact factor and publication year. Results We identified 3649 publications in 375 journals of which 2522 (69%) were currently active. Over 95% of sites were running in the first 2 years, but this rate dropped to 84% in the third year and gradually sank afterwards (P

Many medical journals, publishing in national languages, meet serious financial problems and difficulties when they attempt to become indexed in the international indices. Obviously, this not only affects the scientific quality of non-indexed medical journals (NIMJs) but also affects the awareness of the scientific community of topics with apparently local but potentially broader scientific significance. This is a reality for over 100 Greek medical journals, none of which has a life longer than 30 years or more than 2000 subscribers. Among them, the 'Archives of Hellenic Medicine' (AHM) is published and sponsored by the Athens Medical Society (the oldest medical society in Greece founded in 1835). This peer-reviewed Journal is being published for 13 years, bimonthly, in Greek. Attempting to overcome the above mentioned problems and to be involved in the process of discovering the most effective way of scientific 'skywriting', 2 years ago, the AHM entered full-text in the Web and it was decided that up to 500% of its volume should be covered by English-language papers. As a result, the AHM are now included in the main Web lists of medical journals and their home page is linked in many academic pages having approximately 500 hits/month. Furthermore, 45 retrievals of AHM's English-language papers or English abstracts of Greek-language articles were reported by e-mail response from abroad. Considered apart from the paper-publishing, the expenses of the digital publishing of the AHM are about half of those of paper-publishing, as they were before the appearance of the Journal in the Web. Up to now, about 40% of the Journal's digital publishing cost is covered by advertisements included in its pages and by a modification of its paper-publishing policy. It is concluded that the international scientific community is not indifferent for information published in NIMJs. Medical national minorities working abroad express special interest for this type of information. The Web makes the NIMJs accessible to these potential readers, who would never have the chance to acquire them in their printed form.

The co-editors of BioResources note the completion of our first ten years. We think that the journal can be judged as a success based on having achieved an impact factor of about 1.4 each year since 2009 and having reached a publication rate of about 700 articles per year. We strive to be a “people’s journal” serving scientists, students, and society. We plan to continue emphasizing editorial pieces and review articles, which supplement our main service of publishing peer-reviewed articles dealing with the science of lignocellulosic materials, chemicals, and their uses. We also support undergraduate scholarship in our academic department, including tuition payment, opportunities for pre-editing work, and support for undergraduates to attend conferences, etc.

The need for effective and efficient exchange of clinical knowledge is increasing. Paper based methods for managing clinical knowledge are not meeting the demand for knowledge and this has undoubtedly contributed to the widely reported failures of clinical guidelines. Internet affords both opportunities and dangers for clinical knowledge. Systems such as Wax have demonstrated the importance of intuitive structure in the management of knowledge. We report on a new initiative for the global management of clinical knowledge.

In the first years after the Second World War the editorial and book movement expanded. During the years 1945–1950, there were 17 publishing houses and some occasional publishers in Toruń. The result of their activity involves 322 publications. The article focuses on the problem of layout pertaining to particular works and emphasizes issues such as illustrations, paper and publication size. Furthermore, it presents designers responsible for the projects of covers and illustrations used in the printed matter. Pierwsze lata powojenne były okresem bujnego rozwoju ruchu wydawniczo-księgarskiego. W Toruniu w latach 1945–1950 funkcjonowało siedemnaście oficyn oraz grupy wydawców przygodnych. Efektem ich dzielności są trzysta dwadzieścia dwa druki. Artykuł koncentruje się na kwestii opracowania graficznego poszczególnych pozycji, akcentując takie zagadnienia, jak papier, objętość czy ilustracje. Prezentuje także twórców odpowiedzialnych za projekty okładek oraz materiał ilustracyjny wykorzystywany w publikacjach.

CONFLICT OF INTEREST: NONE DECLARED The paper presents an analysis of how EFMI disseminates new knowledge and of the active medical informatics journals in EFMI member countries, which was carried out as an outcome of the EFMI Council meetings in London in 2008, Sarajevo in 2009 and Antalya in 2009 . The analysis identifies eight active major informatics journals and several other publications. Most are subscription-based and published at least quarterly. There is a possibility for the editors to meet regularly and form a community of practice with the aim of further improving their effectiveness in disseminating new knowledge and best practice in medical informatics. It is feasible to share expertise and it may be possible to harmonise several aspects of preparation and submission of manuscripts so that some of the identified barriers in publishing are reduced.
