The comparative research paper explores the use and risks of social media in South African, USA and European schools. It discusses the potential challenges that schools, educators and learners may face such as cyberbullying, sexting, identity theft, fraud, catphishing, cybercrimes, excessive online presence, and addiction to social media. The paper reports on the findings of a phenomenological study and purposive survey among school principals and educators in South African schools. The paper highlights the advantages of applying social media in the classroom, and provides recommendations for schools, educators, parents and principals to manage the use of social media in the education environment. This paper analyzes depression in university students as a natural reaction to a closure of the possibilities of encountering their own self. A philosophical analysis is carried out with that in mind, based on phenomenology, resorting to the notion of poverty presented by Martin Heidegger in his 1945 seminar and to the foundations of existential analysis, as well as Byung-Chul Han's proposal on the society of tiredness. A case study of university students using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-2) is then presented to contextualize the problem and the performed analysis. The results propose another perspective of depression from an existential point of view coming from the effect of facing the banality of contemporaneity, in which the current university, as an institution aligned with the world's technical availability, restricts man's possibility of a sublime relationship with that which surrounds him, rejecting the possibility of finding a meaning in life within an authentic relationship that is coherent with his original openness. Finally, it is concluded that universities need to focus their actions on a process aimed at individuals encountering their own being, as the most appropriate way to satisfy the yearning for joy of young vitality. These proceedings contain the papers of the IADIS International Conference on Cognition and Exploratory Learning in the Digital Age (CELDA 2013), October 22-24, 2013, which has been organized by the International Association for Development of the Information Society (IADIS), co-organized by The University of North Texas (UNT), sponsored by the Association for Educational Communication and Technologies (AECT), and endorsed by the Japanese Society for Information and Systems in Education (JSISE). The CELDA 2013 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning, and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality, and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aims to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. However, innovative contributions that do not easily fit into these areas are also included as long as they are directly related to the overall theme of the conference--cognition and exploratory learning in the digital age. The conference included the Keynote Lecture: "Ubiquitous Learning Analytics for Adaptive and Authentic Instruction," by Professor Kinshuk, Associate Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, NSERC/iCORE/Xerox/Markin Industrial Research Chair--School of Computing and Information Systems, Athabasca University, Canada. This phenomenological study of school consolidation is an investigation of how education policy that dictates the reorganization of schools and districts impacts educational choices, learning environments, and school culture. Although quality studies of optimal school size for promoting student achievement and cutting costs have emerged in the consolidation literature, few rigorous studies exist that investigate the affective costs and benefits of school consolidation policies. We present the findings from twenty-five interviews in four Arkansas school districts with students, teachers, and administrators who moved as a result of district consolidation, as well as those who were already in receiving schools. In addition to evidence verifying and throwing into doubt arguments in the existing literature both supporting and opposing consolidation, we report evidence of three new themes: 1) those moving schools and in receiving schools have different experiences, with those moving much more affected; 2) adults and children are affected differently, with children much more adaptable; and 3) some promising consolidation strategies to mitigate the problems of consolidation have begun to emerge. Parental experiences in raising children with intellectual disability in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia are described. Using a qualitative research approach, interviews from eleven families formed a rich contextual data base, in addition to informal observations, informal conversations, discussions with key informants, and document review. Findings show that parents face emotional, social, economic, material challenges while raising their children. Themes related to insufficient information and training related to intellectual disability, insufficient formal/informal supports, unfavourable attitudes on the part of the society towards children with intellectual disability, worries about the future, financial problems, lack of materials. Results are discussed in terms of the socio-cultural theoretical framework as well as the salutogenic perspective that focuses on strengths and coping strategies. The author proposes that, to tap into the familial strengths, a systems approach to empowering families may be effective if traditional institutions within the society are encouraged to include families of children with intellectual disabilities. Thinking skills are instruments for meaningful learning and academic achievement and in relation, they are indispensable components of 21st century competencies. However, current Turkish policies do not define what thinking is and some inconsistencies regarding forms of thinking exist in different documents. Also, while teachers might not feel competent with teaching thinking skills, teacher education programs do not offer much to practice thinking skills. The analysis of coursebooks and curriculum also presents limited opportunities for thinking as well as Turkish sociocultural practices may reflect thinking as a negative or problematic concept. Regarding these problems, this study aims to explore pre-service teachers' experiences when they say, "I am thinking" via a phenomenological methodology. Participants (N=42) were recruited via convenience sampling methodology. Data were collected via focus group interviews (N=7) that included 5 to 7 participants. In each interview, participants described (1) thinking, (2) talked about the reactions to their thinking, and (3) named the proverbs that pertain to thinking. Data were analyzed via phenomenological reduction and horizons and structural themes were developed after bracketing was employed. Findings revealed that definitions of thinking highlight individualistic and universal characteristics, and functions of thinking pertain to skills. 80% of reactions to thinking were negative.Also, half of the proverbs highlighted negative connotations. This study suggest that thinking might not be initiated and shared safely as educational practices and cultural reminisces might not promote such intellectual actions. In this sense, curriculum and materials need revisions regarding sociocultural characteristics of Turkish society and pedagogies of thinking. Mounting work pressures brought on by the pandemic led to an escalation in the intangible responsibility of managing emotions, which in turn subjected leaders of higher education institutions to heightened levels of exhaustion, depression, and turnover. This phenomenological study sought to understand how senior leaders in higher education institutions described their engagement in emotional labor in response to their institution's approach to operating during the pandemic. Findings include leaders feeling unable to leave their positions, concealing their feelings, and engaging in surface acting, leading to higher levels of emotional exhaustion. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the construct of a profound moment. Interviews were conducted using a semi-structured interpretive phenomenological approach. Interviews were transcribed, coded, analyzed, and considered in the analysis. Four themes were identified from the analysis: accepting what is, change of life axis, human connecting, and a crystallizing process. Participants expressed a singular moment that changed their lives and became a referential point for life choices and actions as they developed profound learner practices. The 21st century learning leads to create new skill of students, so the Indonesian government offers the new curriculum. In vocational school, project-based learning for the subject of the "Ilmu Pengetahuan Alam dan Sosial" (IPAS) Project is required to increase the creativity of student. Informations about the perspective of vocational teachers to conduct these learnings require to be elaborated more deeply. This research aims to describe the perspective of teachers to Kurikulum 2022. This study is phenomonology research. Participants of this study were 8 teachers of IPAS Project for vocational high school, in Indonesia. The data was collected by interviews. Data analysis was performed using ATLAS.ti 22 software. The results showed that the majority of teachers' response to the Kurikulum 2022 is positive which they explained that Kurikulum 2022 has more advantageous than the lack. The final goal is to improve quality of education in Indonesia. Pancasila profile has good response by teacher because it is more explicit and complex for building the character of student. The vocational teachers have totally prepared by their own creativity. The recommendation from teachers are expressed as a hope for improving quality of education, such as training for teacher, facilities and massive socialization. In this study, it is aimed to examine the experiences of Social Studies Teacher Candidates in the Distance Education process. In this study, which is qualitative research, the phenomenology design was used. The study group of the research consists of Social Studies Teacher Candidates studying at Gaziantep Province Nizip Education Faculty. The data of the study were collected by semi-structured interview technique according to 14 open-ended questions created by the researcher and the expert. During the data collection process, some face-to-face interviews were conducted. Due to the COVID (19) pandemic, which has affected the world and our country, some of the data has been collected via mail and forms. The obtained data were analyzed by content analysis technique. The findings obtained from the analysis of the data are presented in tables. The results obtained within the framework of the experiences of the pre-service teachers gave direction to the research. According to the results obtained in the research, it was stated that the interest of the pre-service teachers who took lessons with distance education decreased and that the distance education lessons had advantages and disadvantages, that distance education lessons were important in continuing education, but they could not replace face-to-face education. The lack of any preparations for distance education and the inability to get used to distance education and the inability to overcome the psychological difficulties in the pandemic process were effective in shaping the views of pre-service teachers. It has been concluded that due to the poor infrastructure of the country due to its geographical regions, the lack of full participation in the classes and the fact that students do not have sufficient equipment and devices economically, they have negative opinions about distance education. Metaphor is a tool that helps us perceive the world by expressing more than word art. Metaphors are used in certain areas of education. It appears in different ways in the fields of literature, philosophy, sociology, educational sciences, social studies. Teachers also tell concrete and abstract data through metaphors to make it easier to keep in mind and to make it more understandable. The purpose of this study is to perceive the metaphor perceptions of the concepts of "independence" and "struggle" that reveal the mental perceptions of classroom teachers. The method of this research is designed with one of the qualitative research methods, phenomenology. The research was conducted in the fall semester of the 2020-2021 academic year. The working group of the study 33 classroom teachers serving in various provinces and districts of Turkey (28 women, 5 man) was performed. "Independence is like ………; because ……" and "Struggle is like ………; because ………" questions were asked. The data were interpreted through content analysis. The metaphors obtained according to the content analysis were categorized according to their common features in terms of meaning, and tables were created and interpreted. The metaphors about the concept of "independence" are divided into 7 conceptual categories, and the metaphors about the concept of "struggle" are divided into 5 conceptual categories. According to the results obtained in this study, a metaphor has been explained mostly in the category of freedom with 57.4% about the concept of "independence". In this category, the metaphor of "bird" was formed at the most with 15.2%. With 45.2% regarding the concept of "struggle", it is mostly explained in the category of overcoming difficulties. In this category, the metaphor of "life" was formed at most with 12.1%. The metaphors created by the classroom teachers participating in the study reveal that they perceive them in a way that is equivalent to the definitions used in the Social Studies course. In the light of the findings, the research group can be changed, more different research can be done using qualitative and quantitative methods, and comparative studies with demographic information can be made. It is considered important for school principals to have technology leadership competencies in digital age conditions in order to carry out education and training efficiently and effectively. Since teachers see school principals as role models, how teachers perceive the technology use skills of school principals is an important factor for the technology integration process in the school. In this context, this research aimed to examine primary school teachers' views on their school principals' technological competencies. The study was designed as a phenomenological research within the qualitative research paradigm. The participants were 15 primary school teachers working in the city center of Isparta, Turkey. Data were collected through online and face-to-face semi-structured interviews and analyzed using descriptive qualitative data analysis methodology. Participants' views were categorized under six main themes as school principal's knowledge and use of general technology in the school, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, augmented reality, cyber security, and 3D printer. The need to develop international cross-cultural perspectives has led many educators to create study abroad programs for their learners. One way to support this learning in adult higher education is to offer education abroad programs -- often short-term international field experiences led by faculty for adult students. In the current study, we investigated experiences of adult education/HRD faculty who have experience teaching in such programs; additionally, we explored what and how they have learned in order to do so. Through the amalgamated conceptual framework of learning readiness, communities of practice, and motivational learning theory, we offer preliminary analyses of interviews conducted with five tenured/tenure-track faculty members about their motivations and professional development in advance of leading these programs. This phenomenological study explored the concept of profound moments. We previously defined a profound moment as an experience that intentionally or unintentionally continues to surface in our consciousness, has transformed our fundamental perspectives, and has been integrated into how we live. Selected participants had experienced highly memorable moments and demonstrated an introspective personality. The interviews used a semi-structured, interpretive phenomenological approach. Interviews were coded, analyzed, and interpreted for preliminary results. This paper examines the state of the art of mobile Augmented Reality (AR) and mobile Virtual Reality (VR) in relation to collaboration and professional practices in a creative digital environment and higher education. To support their discussion, the authors use a recent design-based research project named "Juxtapose," which explores tensions between the digital and the analogue. Also Juxtapose explores the possibilities of interaction resulting from the use of multiple markers to create a playful semi-tangible object, whilst proposing a networked model of content creation in "augmented space." In this paper, following a narrative and empirical base, the authors argue that their approach is very similar to Wenger's concept of legitimate peripheral participation leading to active participation within communities of practice and can be beneficial to redesign and improve some of the creative curriculum in higher education. In this paper characterizations of mental objects for fractions of middle school students (from 12 to 14 years old) with absenteeism problems and low academic performance, are described. A test was designed as part of a research whose general purpose is to contribute in the building up of better mental objects for fractions through a teaching sequence. Items for the test were structured according to the results of a didactic phenomenology of fractions and the curricular content proposed for the last years of elementary school. Results indicate that students have a greater success in issues related to continuous model partitions phenomena, whereas they are less successful using fractions on the number line. Students cannot transfer their knowledge from an area model to a linear model to identify or represent fractions. [This paper is written in both Spanish and English.
