This paper is part of a more comprehensive study in which I focus on teaching practice conflicts in Cordoba during the 90's, in the context of state reforms. Within this framework, on one hand I am interested in showing the real nature of official and pedagogic discourse around the educative reform; on the other hand, to discusse and leave open the possibility of thinking that there was a displacement of logical organization of the business sector to the educative area and also that the use of philosophical assumptions of onhism were being applied to other work areas. This factor had also a great influence on educative sphere as a part of global transformation and in consequence, it influenced national and provincial government discourse around that reform. Finally, this paper aims to suggest deeper analysis to follow on how those discourses were received among teachers, and the individual or collective resistance that they might have generated. This article points to answer three questions: Did the national and provincial government discourse about this educative reform point to change the organization of the teaching job and the teacher's profile? In what sense did they do that? And how did the teachers receive those government interpellations? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ROCK art (Archaeology) , *WATER supply , *AGRICULTURE , *ARCHAEOLOGY - Abstract
This paper presents and analyzes the archaeological data recovered in Guasapampa Valley (province of Cordoba, Argentina), which consists mainly of engraved and painted rock art panels. The forested mountain landscape has numerous species of trees and shrubs with edible fruits, but it is distinguished by a scarcity of water resources. During the late Prehispanic period (ca. 1400-400 B.P.) the Guasapampa Valley was occupied seasonally by groups established most of the year in the fertile valleys of the east, in agricultural oases up to 20 and 40 km away. The data recovered are significant because they allow us to understand the role of rock art as an active medium for the establishment, negotiation, and reproduction of certain social ties between producers and observers. In this regard, we assume a comparative perspective that allows us to identify particularities of the occupations of southern and northern sections of the valley, especially the features that define the contexts of production and meaning of the art. The differences identified in each section of the valley refer to contrasts and oppositions in the social practices surrounding and produced by this materiality. Thus, we consider the elements that support its definition on the one hand as a means to convey the significance of particular places among minimal affiliational groups who build an open, shared social landscape in the case of the southern section, and on the other hand as territorial markers in the north related to the existence of limits and restrictions on movement and access to resources, including seasonal water wells. RAINFALL , *SOLAR cycle , *COSMIC rays , *METEOROLOGICAL precipitation , *METEOROLOGICAL stations , *SOLAR activity - Abstract
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the partial trends of rainy days and total precipitation in Córdoba Province, Argentina, during the period 1960–2010 and the full range of precipitation for the Córdoba Observatory station, which has the longest measurement record in Argentina, 1873–2010, and to show the relationship between these variables and solar activity. A strong association is shown between break points when the trend changes for both the number of rainy days and the total precipitation, and the occurrence of maxima in the sunspot cycle, indicating that these variables are modulated by the solar Hale cycle and probably by the influence of cosmic rays. DECENTRALIZATION in government , *HEALTH policy , *INTERVENTION (Federal government) , *INTERVENTION (Social services) , *TWENTIETH century , *HISTORY ,ARGENTINE politics & government, 1943-1955 - Abstract
An intense process of state development, which generated social intervention and new capacities to produce public policies, took place since the forties in Argentina. This phenomenon was accompanied by trends towards an increasing centralization of the political power in the Executive branch of the government. Within this context, this paper attempts to explore these processes from a perspective based on a provincial jurisdiction, constructing an account that locates the history of this political entity within the more comprehensive story of the structuring of the Interventionist State. In order to achieve this purpose, the history of one provincial health department and its relationships with the Federal State organizations are analyzed, trying to unravel the reactions that the provincial state elaborated to the process of centralization of social policies, which accompanied the emergence of Peronism. Abstract: The Mar Chiquita saline lake is located in the lowest part of one of the largest endorreic saline basins of South America. With a surface area of 6000–6500 km2, the lake is located in a tectonic depression with an asymmetric cross section. The Sierras Pampeanas foothills, (with altitudes near 1500 m) are to the west and a 100-m topographic high (San Guillermo high) is to the east whose western border is bounded by a buried Middle Pleistocene fault (the Tostado-Selva Fault). The main tributary of the lake is the Dulce River, which flows from north to south. The southward flow of the river was impeded by an obstacle that closed the Dulce Valley, generating the Mar Chiquita Lake. The megafans of the Primero, Segundo, and Tercero Rivers deposited a large amount of sediment against the faulted border of the San Guillermo high, generating an obstacle that impeded the normal flow of the rivers and diverted the Dulce and the Salado Rivers to their present positions. Precise data concerning the age of the impounding of Mar Chiquita does not exist, but lacustrine conditions are undoubtedly younger than the uplift of the San Guillermo high, which occurred in the Middle Pleistocene. The well-preserved dry valley of the Dulce River, located southward of Mar Chiquita, is still visible in satellite images and confirms the youth of the impounding. The observations introduced in this paper allow us to understand the origin of a significant feature of the central plains of South America. The generation of Mar Chiquita Lake and upstream wetlands produced a pronounced environmental change in the arid Chaco-Pampeana Plain, which favored human life by introducing changes in vegetation and fauna. LAND use ,ALTITUDES ,FOREST regeneration ,MOUNTAINS ,SPECIES distribution - Abstract
Aim: Understanding the forces that drive range shifts in forest landscapes is imperative for predicting species distributions under anthropogenic climate and land use change. However, empirical studies exploring how these components jointly influence critical early life stages of mountain tree species across environmental gradients are scarce. We used the high mountain tree Polylepis australis as model species to investigate the relative importance of altitude and associated climatic conditions, land use for livestock and microsite characteristics on early life performance. Location: Córdoba Sierras, central Argentina. Methods: We set up an extensive in situ sowing experiment with a robust split‐plot design that integrated spatial scales ranging from 0.4 m2 subplots at the microsite level (associated with vegetative and microtopographic structures), to livestock exclosure and enclosure plots of several hectares, to an altitudinal gradient of 1,000 m. Components of early life performance were monitored across two subsequent growing seasons. Results: Microsite characteristics played a fundamental role in P. australis establishment, whereby interactions with altitude and/or land use suggested alternate mechanisms: facilitation (likely reduced desiccation) dominated at low altitude while at high altitude, abiotic stress (likely intensive frost and radiation) overruled any microsite effects. At mid‐altitude, benefits of competition release prevailed over facilitation and microsite effects gained importance under livestock presence. Inconsistencies between pre‐ and post‐emergence responses illustrated potential trade‐offs between beneficial and detrimental effects of microsite conditions upon performance throughout early life: a favourable location for seeds may abruptly turn adverse for seedlings. Main conclusions: We unravel how changes in altitude, anthropogenic disturbances and microsite characteristics jointly modulate P. australis performance across stages of early establishment. Such information is fundamental when categorizing specific microhabitats as "safe sites" for tree regeneration especially in mountain environments with high spatio‐temporal heterogeneity. St. Louis encephalitis virus is a complex zoonoses. In 2005, 47 laboratory-confirmed and probable clinical cases of SLEV infection were reported in Córdoba, Argentina. Although the causes of 2005 outbreak remain unknown, they might be related not only to virological factors, but also to ecological and environmental conditions. We hypothesized that one of the factors for SLE reemergence in Córdoba, Argentina, was the introduction of a new SLEV genotype (SLEV genotype III), with no previous activity in the area. In order to evaluate this hypothesis we carried out a molecular characterization of SLEV detections from mosquitoes collected between 2001 and 2004 in Córdoba city. A total of 315 mosquito pools (11,002 individuals) including 12 mosquitoes species were analyzed. Overall, 20 pools (8 mosquitoes species) were positive for SLEV. During this study, genotypes II, V and VII were detected. No mosquito pool infected with genotype III was detected before the 2005 outbreak. Genotype V was found every year and in the 8 sampled sites. Genotypes II and VII showed limited temporal and spatial activities. We cannot dismiss the association of genotype II and V as etiological agents during the outbreak. However, the silent circulation of other SLEV strains in Córdoba city before the 2005 outbreak suggests that the introduction of genotype III was an important factor associated to this event. Not mutually exclusive, other factors such as changes in avian hosts and mosquitoes vectors communities, driven by climatic and nvironmental modifications, should also be taken into consideration in further studies. Background: Forests are used for multiple purposes worldwide, which often include timber harvest, firewood extraction and livestock raising. An excessive pressure on multipurpose systems may decrease soil cover, promoting soil erosion and causing the loss of other resources, as litter and seeds. Retention forestry practices can help to decrease or mitigate resource loss in the managed stands. Specifically, retaining and redistributing biological legacies (e.g. logs, branches, woody debris) at strategic locations can create sediment, litter, and seed-sinks in the silvopastoral systems. In addition, grazing management could increase or, even, decrease the success of this practice. In this study, we assessed the effect of branch barriers and grazing management on resource run-off/run-on processes in silvopastoral systems of Arid Chaco (Córdoba, Argentina). To do this, a 2-ha area was divided in two paddocks that were randomly assigned to different grazing managements: winter vs. continuous grazing. We randomly selected 22 water run-off paths in each paddock, and in the half of them, we build elongated branch piles. In each run-off path (with and without branch barriers), we recorded the amount of accumulated and lost sediment (during the rainy season), litter biomass, germinable seed bank, richness and cover of plant species, and richness and density of seedlings and saplings of woody species. Results: Branch barriers promoted sediment accumulation during the first and the second year of the study, depending on grazing management. The temporal and spatial scale of the effect of the branch barriers also depended on grazing management. Branch barriers also trapped litter and seeds, which may have increased the richness and density of seedlings and saplings of woody species. Conclusions: By intercepting the dominant flow of erosive agents, branch barriers trapped sediment, litter, and propagules of different species. A greater amount of sediment and litter would have improved microsite quality, favouring seed germination and seedling emergence of tree and shrub species, which are key to maintain and/or reconstitute the structure and composition of the forest community in the long term. Therefore, redistributing biological legacies at strategic locations can be a useful and cost-less retention forestry practice to be applied in multipurpose forest management and conservation strategies.
