Microbialite textures, such as microbial mats and biofilms, were observed in the Middle Triassic dolomite in the Sichuan Basin, western China, using core examination, thin section petrography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and geochemical analyses. The dolomite texture, consisting of fibrous and spherulitic structures, is similar in morphology and size distribution to those observed in microbial culture experiments. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were identified based on the occurrence of fibers forming a reticular pattern and nanometer-sized spheroids. The rare earth element (REE) and stable isotope (C, O, and Sr) compositions of the Middle Triassic dolomite were measured to determine their geochemical characteristics. Using seawater as a standard, the dolomitic microbialites (MD) exhibited significantly positive La and Eu anomalies and higher REE concentrations and (Nd/Yb)sn values than associated limestones, and these patterns are inferred to be related to initial complexation on organic ligands in the biofilm, as proposed by previous researchers. The ambient temperature during dolomite precipitation was estimated to be within the 23 °C to 50 °C range, as indicated by the δ18O values of the dolomite. A field campaign in Liupan Mountains was carried out by the Weather Modification Center of the China Meteorological Administration to study the impact of terrain on precipitation in Northwest China. The vertical structures and microphysical characteristics of a mixed cloud and precipitation process, which means stratiform clouds with embedded convection, over three topographic positions of the Liupan Mountains, namely, the Longde (LD, located on the windward slope), Liupan (LP, located on the mountain top), and Dawan sites (DW, located on the leeward slope), are compared using measurements from ground-based cloud radar (CR), micro rain radar (MRR), and disdrometer (OTT). The 17 h process is classified into cumulus mixed (1149 min), shallow (528 min), and stratiform (570 min) cloud and precipitation stages. Among them, the vertical structures over the three sites are relatively similar in the third stage, while the differences, mainly in cloud-top heights (CTHs) and rain rates (Rs), are significant in the second stage due to the strong instability. Overall, the characteristics of higher concentrations and smaller diameters of raindrops are found in this study, especially at the LP site. Topographic forcing makes the microphysical and dynamic processes of mountaintop clouds and precipitation more intense. The updrafts are the strongest at the LP, caused by orographic uplifting, and the DW is dominated by the downdrafts due to the topography impact on the dynamic structure. Meanwhile, particle falling velocities (Vts) and downdrafts rapidly increase within 0.6 km near the ground over the LP, forming positive feedback, and the collision–coalescence process is dominant. To investigate the topographic effects on precipitation in the Liupan Mountains Area of Northwest China, three micro rain radars, located at a ridge, west valley, and east valley in the area, respectively, were used to observe precipitation processes. By comparing the characteristics of stratiform precipitation at three sites, it was found that (i) the effective radar reflectivity and characteristic falling velocity of hydrometeors at the ridge and east valley were larger than those at the west valley; (ii) the diameter and density of solid hydrometeors at the ridge and east valley were slightly larger than those at the west valley; and (iii) there was also a higher occurrence frequency of larger graupel at the ridge. It is inferred that the precipitable water vapor at the ridge and east valley is richer than at the west valley, which leads to a larger aggregation efficiency and degrees of riming at the former than the latter. Besides, forced uplifting of water vapor over the mountain area around the ridge may play a part in topographic supercooling, which leads to enhanced riming of supercooled liquid water. The Liupan Mountain (LPM) area is located on the northeast margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, which is the western part of the second ladder of China's terrain. It is also an intersection area of two air currents, which are caused by the combined action of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, the middle and lower levels of the westerly belt and the edge of the monsoon area. LPM is one of the main air water vapour transport pathways in Northwest China as well as a main water conservation area for nearly ten million people. Research on atmospheric precipitable water vapour (PWV) variation characteristics in LPM is beneficial for understanding the mechanisms of orographic precipitation and improving the effects of weather modification. Based on the data from 10 Global Navigation Satellite System Meteorology (GNSS/MET) stations for 6 years and the data of automatic weather stations in the LPM, the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of PWV in the LPM were analysed, and the differences in PWV in the 24 h before and after precipitation were compared in this study. The results showed that the hourly, monthly and seasonal variations in PWV displayed obvious patterns. PWV increased rapidly 10 h ahead of precipitation, while it decreased rapidly within 10 h after precipitation, which was slower than that before precipitation. In terms of spatial distribution, PWV was larger in the south than in the north and larger in the east than in the west. Although the precipitation on the LPM peak was the highest in the whole LPM area, its PWV was always the lowest, indicating that the PWV was obviously affected by the air temperature. This showed that under the same water vapour condition, precipitation was more likely to form in the area with low temperature, and the precipitation was larger, which also provided a train of thought for improving the method of artificial precipitation enhancement by using the condensation catalyst. Two years of data on cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) measured at the Liupan Mountain (LPS) Meteorological Station from August 2020 to November 2021 were analyzed in this study. The results show that the mean annual CCN concentration was 851 cm−3 and that the mean concentration of CCN increases with the supersaturation degree. The curves of the diurnal variation in CCN concentration show one peak and one valley, which correspond to the diurnal variation in the mixed-layer height and valley wind. Regarding seasonal variations, the CCN concentration, as well as the degree of internal mixing, is higher in the spring and winter, while the degree of external mixing is higher in the summer and autumn. The transport of CCN is closely related to the wind transport evolution, and the southeast and southwest sides of the LPS station contribute more to the CCN concentration in the spring and winter due to central heating in the wintertime. Though correlations between CCN concentration and pressure are scarce, the CCN concentration and temperature (or humidity) are positively (or negatively) correlated, especially in the spring. Furthermore, the 48-h backward trajectory analysis indicates that the sources in the northwest direction are a major contributor to the CCN concentration. The pollutants mainly came from the northwest and southwest sides, according to the analysis of potential sources using the PSCF and CWT approach. The study of CCN evolution and contribution area is beneficial for further research on the physical properties of cloud droplets, the influence of mountains on CCN changes and the role of CCN in terrain cloud precipitation, which are significant for the improvement of weather modification techniques. Background: In China, nitrogen (N)-deficiency often occurs in Citrus orchards, which is one of the main causes of yield loss and fruit quality decline. Little information is known about the adaptive responses of Citrus carbon (C) and N metabolisms to N-deficiency. Seedlings of 'Xuegan' (Citrus sinensis (L.) Osbeck) were supplied with nutrient solution at an N concentration of 0 (N-deficiency), 5, 10, 15 or 20 mM for 10 weeks. Thereafter, we examined the effects of N supply on the levels of C and N in roots, stems and leaves, and the levels of organic acids, nonstructural carbohydrates, NH4+-N, NO3−-N, total soluble proteins, free amino acids (FAAs) and derivatives (FAADs), and the activities of key enzymes related to N assimilation and organic acid metabolism in roots and leaves. Results: N-deficiency elevated sucrose export from leaves to roots, C and N distributions in roots and C/N ratio in roots, stems and leaves, thus enhancing root dry weight/shoot dry weight ratio and N use efficiency. N-deficient leaves displayed decreased accumulation of starch and total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) and increased sucrose/starch ratio as well as a partitioning trend of assimilated C toward to sucrose, but N-deficient roots displayed elevated accumulation of starch and TNC and reduced sucrose/starch ratio as well as a partitioning trend of assimilated C toward to starch. N-deficiency reduced the concentrations of most FAADs and the ratios of total FAADs (TFAADs)/N in leaves and roots. N-deficiency reduced the demand for C skeleton precursors for amino acid biosynthesis, thus lowering TFAADs/C ratio in leaves and roots. N-deficiency increased (decreased) the relative amounts of C-rich (N-rich) FAADs, thus increasing the molar ratio of C/N in TFAADs in leaves and roots. Conclusions: Our findings corroborated our hypothesis that C and N metabolisms displayed adaptive responses to N-deficiency in C. sinensis seedlings, and that some differences existed between roots and leaves in N-deficiency-induced alterations of and C and N metabolisms. Background: The outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global pandemic acute infectious disease, especially with the features of possible asymptomatic carriers and high contagiousness. Currently, it is difficult to quickly identify asymptomatic cases or COVID-19 patients with pneumonia due to limited access to reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) nucleic acid tests and CT scans. Goal: This study aimed to develop a scientific and rigorous clinical diagnostic tool for the rapid prediction of COVID-19 cases based on a COVID-19 clinical case database in China, and to assist doctors to efficiently and precisely diagnose asymptomatic COVID-19 patients and cases who had a false-negative RT-PCR test result. Methods: With online consent, and the approval of the ethics committee of Zhongshan Hospital Fudan University (NCT04275947, B2020-032R) to ensure that patient privacy is protected, clinical information has been uploaded in real-time through the New Coronavirus Intelligent Auto-diagnostic Assistant Application of cloud plus terminal (nCapp) by doctors from different cities (Wuhan, Shanghai, Harbin, Dalian, Wuxi, Qingdao, Rizhao, and Bengbu) during the COVID-19 outbreak in China. By quality control and data anonymization on the platform, a total of 3,249 cases from COVID-19 high-risk groups were collected. The effects of different diagnostic factors were ranked based on the results from a single factor analysis, with 0.05 as the significance level for factor inclusion and 0.1 as the significance level for factor exclusion. Independent variables were selected by the step-forward multivariate logistic regression analysis to obtain the probability model. Findings: We applied the statistical method of a multivariate regression model to the training dataset (1,624 cases) and developed a prediction model for COVID-19 with 9 clinical indicators that are accessible. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) for the model was 0.88 (95% CI: 0.86, 0.89) in the training dataset and 0.84 (95% CI: 0.82, 0.86) in the validation dataset (1,625 cases). Discussion: With the assistance of nCapp, a mobile-based diagnostic tool developed from a large database that we collected from COVID-19 high-risk groups in China, frontline doctors can rapidly identify asymptomatic patients and avoid misdiagnoses of cases with false-negative RT-PCR results. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a powerful risk factor for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Although lifestyle intervention reduces several of the symptoms of the syndrome and cardiovascular risks, the lifestyle intervention that yields the benefits is restrictive. Jinlida is a Chinese patent medicine that has shown activity in type 2 diabetes, which has been approved in China. Preclinical studies in Jinlida granules support an improved role of abnormal glucose and lipids metabolism as well as reducing weight. Here, we describe the protocol of an ongoing clinical trial investigating a new therapy for metabolic syndrome in patients with abnormal glucose metabolism. Methods: This study will enroll 880 subjects (aged 18–70 years) who have metabolic syndromes with abnormal glucose metabolism. All the participants in a double-blind, parallel, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, will receive Jinlida or placebo, orally, 9 g/time, three times daily for 2–4 years period on the basis of lifestyle intervention. The primary outcome measure (Incidence of type 2 diabetes) will be assessed during intervention cycles. Adverse events were monitored. All statistical tests will be performed using a two-sided test, and a p ≤ 0.05 (two-sided test) will be considered to be statistically significant results. Discussion: Results from this study will provide evidence on whether incorporating oral Jinlida granules treatment into lifestyle intervention can delay or inhibit the development of diabetes mellitus in metabolic syndrome subjects with abnormal glucose metabolism. Organic aerosols (OAs), which consist of thousands of complex compounds emitted from various sources, constitute one of the major components of fine particulate matter. The traditional positive matrix factorization (PMF) method often apportions aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS) organic datasets into less meaningful or mixed factors, especially in complex urban cases. In this study, an improved source apportionment method using a bilinear model of the multilinear engine (ME-2) was applied to OAs collected during the heavily polluted season from two Chinese megacities located in the north and south with an Aerodyne highresolution aerosol mass spectrometer (HR-ToF-AMS). We applied a rather novel procedure for utilization of prior information and selecting optimal solutions, which does not necessarily depend on other studies. Ultimately, six reasonable factors were clearly resolved and quantified for both sites by constraining one or more factors: hydrocarbon-like OA (HOA), cooking-related OA (COA), biomass burning OA (BBOA), coal combustion (CCOA), less-oxidized oxygenated OA (LO-OOA) and more-oxidized oxygenated OA (MO-OOA). In comparison, the traditional PMF method could not effectively resolve the appropriate factors, e.g., BBOA and CCOA, in the solutions. Moreover, coal combustion and traffic emissions were determined to be primarily responsible for the concentrations of PAHs and BC, respectively, through the regression analyses of the ME-2 results. Therapeutic interventions in prediabetes are important in the primary prevention of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and its chronic complications. However, little is known about the pharmacogenetic effect of traditional herbs on prediabetes treatment. A total of 194 impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) subjects were treated with traditional hypoglycemic herbs (Tianqi Jiangtang) for 12 months in this study. DNA samples were genotyped for 184 mutations in 34 genes involved in drug metabolism or transportation. Multinomial logistic regression analysis indicated that rs1142345 (A > G) in the thiopurine S-methyltransferase (TPMT) gene was significantly associated with the hypoglycemic effect of the drug (P = 0.001, FDR P = 0.043). The "G" allele frequencies of rs1142345 in the healthy (subjects reverted from IGT to normal glucose tolerance), maintenance (subjects still had IGT), and deterioration (subjects progressed from IGT to T2D) groups were 0.094, 0.214, and 0.542, respectively. Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that rs1142345 was also significantly associated with the hypoglycemic effect of the drug between the healthy and maintenance groups (P = 0.027, OR = 4.828) and between the healthy and deterioration groups (P = 0.001, OR = 7.811). Therefore, rs1142345 was associated with the clinical effect of traditional hypoglycemic herbs. Results also suggested that TPMT was probably involved in the pharmacological mechanisms of T2D. Background: Plasma fibrinogen is significantly associated with cardiovascular (CV) events and mortality in the general population. However, the association between plasma fibrinogen and mortality in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) is unclear.Methods: This was a prospective cohort study. A total of 1603 incident PD patients from a single center in South China were followed for a median of 46.7 months. A Cox regression analysis was used to evaluate the independent association of plasma fibrinogen with CV and all-cause mortality. Models were adjusted for age, sex, smoking, a history of CV events, diabetes, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, hemoglobin, blood platelet count, serum potassium, serum albumin, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, hypersensitive C-reactive protein, estimated glomerular filtration rate, antiplatelet agents and lipid-lowering drugs.Results: The mean age was 47.4 ± 15.3 years, 955 (59.6%) patients were male, 319 (19.9%) had a history of CV events, and 410 (25.6%) had diabetes. The average plasma fibrinogen level was 4.12 ± 1.38 g/L. Of the 474 (29.6%) patients who died during follow-up, 235 (49.6%) died due to CV events. In multivariable models, the adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for quartile 1, quartile 3, and quartile 4 versus quartile 2 were 1.18 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.72-1.95, P = 0.51), 1.47 (95% CI, 0.93-2.33, P = 0.10), and 1.78 (95% CI, 1.15-2.77, P = 0.01) for CV mortality and 1.20 (95% CI, 0.86-1.68, P = 0.28), 1.29 (95% CI, 0.93-1.78, P = 0.13), and 1.53 (95% CI, 1.12-2.09, P = 0.007) for all-cause mortality, respectively. A nonlinear relationship between plasma fibrinogen and CV and all-cause mortality was observed.Conclusions: An elevated plasma fibrinogen level was significantly associated with an increased risk of CV and all-cause mortality in patients undergoing PD. Background: Limited data are available on the responses of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and methylglyoxal (MG) metabolisms to low pH in roots and leaves. In China, quite a few of Citrus are cultivated in acidic soils (pH < 5.0). 'Xuegan' (Citrus sinensis) and 'Sour pummelo' (Citrus grandis) (C. sinensis were more tolerant to low pH than C. grandis) seedlings were irrigated daily with nutrient solution at a pH of 2.5, 3 or 5 for nine months. Thereafter, we examined low pH effects on growth, and superoxide anion production rate (SAP), malondialdehyde (MDA), MG, antioxidants, and enzymes related to ROS and MG detoxification in roots and leaves in order to (a) test the hypothesis that low pH affected ROS and MG metabolisms more in roots than those of leaves, and (b) understand the roles of ROS and MG metabolisms in Citrus low pH-tolerance and -toxicity. Results: Compared with control, most of the physiological parameters related to ROS and MG metabolisms were greatly altered at pH 2.5, but almost unaffected at pH 3. In addition to decreased root growth, many fibrous roots became rotten and died at pH 2.5. pH 2.5-induced changes in SAP, the levels of MDA, MG and antioxidants, and the activities of most enzymes related to ROS and MG metabolisms were greater in roots than those of leaves. Impairment of root ascorbate metabolism was the most serious, especially in C. grandis roots. pH 2.5-induced increases in MDA and MG levels in roots and leaves, decreases in the ratios of ascorbate/(ascorbate+dehydroascorbate) in roots and leaves and of reduced glutathione/(reduced+oxidized glutathione) in roots were greater in C. grandis than those in C. sinensis. Conclusions: Low pH affected MG and ROS metabolisms more in roots than those in leaves. The most seriously impaired ascorbate metabolism in roots was suggested to play a role in low pH-induced root death and growth inhibition. Low pH-treated C. sinensis roots and leaves had higher capacity to maintain a balance between ROS and MG production and their removal via detoxification systems than low pH-treated C. grandis ones, thus contribute to the higher acid-tolerance of C. sinensis. Waste classification is regarded as one of the most important strategies for waste management, and its success depends on the active participation of the public. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and attitude-behavior-condition (A-B-C) theory, this research investigated the key factors affecting residents' domestic waste classification intention (WCI) and waste classification behavior (WCB), and explored the moderating effects of three external factors including infrastructure (INF), government publicity (GP), and incentive measures (IM) on the intention-behavior relationship. The valid data were collected from 584 residents via conducting a face-to-face interview in Chengdu, a pilot city of waste classification in China, and analyzed by using the structural equation model (SEM). Results showed that residents' WCI and WCB had a significant discrepancy with the average values of 4.07 and 2.81, respectively. Attitude (AT), perceived behavior control (PBC) and classification knowledge (CK) were significantly related to residents' WCI, with AT (β = 0.65, P < 0.001) having the greatest direct impact. Meanwhile, CK and INF had a stronger impact on the WCB than WCI. GP indirectly affected WCB through the intermediary effect of CK. In addition, INF and GP had a positively moderating effect on residents' waste classification intention-behavior relationship and can facilitate the intention-behavior conversion. By contrast, IM failed to promote the conversion of residents' classification intention into behavior, and had no direct significant influence on residents' WCB. Background: Various epidemiological studies have focused on the adverse health outcomes of meteorological factors. However, there has been little research on the impact of humidex on allergic conjunctivitis, especially in child and adolescent populations. We aimed to explore the impact of humidex, a comprehensive index of relative humidity and temperature, on child and adolescent allergic conjunctivitis admissions., Methods: Outpatient visit data for allergic conjunctivitis, meteorological factors and air pollutants in Shanghai for the 2017-2022 period were retrieved. For the purpose of analysing the nonlinear connection and lag impact between humidex and admissions for paediatric and adolescent allergic conjunctivitis, the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was fitted., Results: A total of 147 090 cases were included in our cohort. We found a significantly nonlinear effect on humidex and allergic conjunctivitis. In the single-day lag pattern, the relative risks (RR) of allergic conjunctivitis were significant at lag 0 (RR = 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05-1.11) to lag 2 (RR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.01), lag 5 (RR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.01) to lag 9 (RR = 1.01, 95% CI = 1.00-1.01), and lag 14 (RR = 1.02, 95% CI: 1.01-1.03). In the cumulative-lag day pattern, the RR of allergic conjunctivitis were significant at lag 0-0 (RR = 1.08, 95% CI = 1.05-1.11) to lag 0-14 (RR = 1.21, 95% CI = 1.13-1.28). We found that boys, children aged 7-17 years, and children in the warm season were more vulnerable to humidex. In addition, the highest attributable fraction (AF) and attributable number (AN) of humidex are at lag 0-14 (AF = 0.17, AN = 25 026)., Conclusions: Humidex exposure markedly increased the risk of allergic conjunctivitis, especially in highly high humidex. This paper employs the SBM-DDF method to measure the index of green total-factor productivity (GTFP), based on the panel data of 279 prefecture-level cities in China from 2007 to 2019, and constructs a spatial Durbin model (SDM) and a threshold effect to empirically test the effects of dual environmental-regulations and green technological innovation on GTFP. The results are as follows: (1) the SDM supports a nonlinear contribution of dual environmental-regulations spillover to GTFP. The relationship between formal environmental-regulation and GTFP is an inverted U-shape, while a U-shaped nonlinear relationship is found between informal environmental regulation and GTFP. (2) Green technology innovation has a significant negative moderating effect on the process of dual environmental-regulations affecting GTFP in local regions, but a positive moderating effect on informal environmental regulation in neighboring regions. (3) There is a significant green technology innovation threshold effect of dual environmental-regulations affecting GTFP. Specifically, the promotion effect of dual environmental-regulations on GFFP gradually increases as the level of green technology innovation increases.

Against the background of "carbon neutrality" and sustainable development goals, it is of great significance to assess the carbon storage changes and sustainability of terrestrial ecosystems in order to maintain the coordinated sustainable development of regional ecological economies and the balance of terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, the terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage in Guizhou from 2010 to 2020 was assessed with the InVEST model. Using the PLUS model, the distribution of terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage by 2030 and 2050 was predicted. The current sustainable development level of the terrestrial ecosystem of Guizhou was evaluated after establishing an index system based on SDGs. The results showed the following: (1) From 2010 to 2020, the terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage decreased by 1106.68 × 10 4 Mg. The area and carbon storage of the forest and farmland ecosystems decreased while the area and carbon storage of the grassland and settlement ecosystems increased. (2) Compared with 2020, the terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage will be reduced by 4091.43 × 10 4 Mg by 2030. Compared with 2030, the terrestrial ecosystem carbon storage will continue to decrease by 3833.25 × 10 4 Mg by 2050. (3) In 2020, the average score of the sustainable development of the terrestrial ecosystem was 0.4300. Zunyi City had the highest sustainable development score of 0.6255, and Anshun had the lowest sustainable development score of 0.3236. Overall, the sustainable development of the terrestrial ecosystem of Guizhou was found to be high in the north, low in the south, high in the east, and low in the west. The sustainable regional development of the terrestrial ecosystem of Guizhou was found to be unbalanced, and the carbon storage of the terrestrial ecosystem will keep decreasing in the future. Rapid urbanization in China has transformed many rural areas from agriculture-dominated to diverse systems, but studies of rural morphology are limited compared to studies of urban settlement. This paper uses a fractal dimension (FD) value to analyze the change in rural morphology in Fujian Province, a region with a long history of rural settlement and rapid recent urbanization, and to explore the factors that influenced this change. We found that the rural FD value increased from 2000 to 2012 and that rural morphology was spatially heterogeneous. FD was generally lower than in urban areas but very close to a typical urban area value in the southeast coastal region. A structural equation model was used to identify key factors influencing rural morphology, which were natural conditions, rurality and economic development, while historic administration had the smallest positive effect. With a long history and unique administrative system, the spatial morphology of Chinese rural areas has shown characteristics distinct from compact urban or scattered rural areas. The urban planning method adopted by rural planners is not suitable in rural regions, because the planning potential of rural areas with high and low FD values varies. Although rural planning currently uses a very similar approach to urban planning, it should use a local, flexible and adaptive policy based on rural morphological characteristics.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of an ophthalmic solution containing 0.1% fluorometholone (FML) and 0.1% sodium hyaluronate (HA) for the treatment of ocular dryness in Sjögren syndrome (SS) patients.Forty SS patients were randomly assigned to the FML or cyclosporin A (CsA) treatment groups. The FML group was treated with 0.1% FML and 0.1% HA, and the CsA group was treated with 0.5% CsA and 0.1% HA. Primary outcomes were corneal fluorescein staining (CFS), the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, conjunctival goblet cell density, and the severity of conjunctival congestion. Patients were also evaluated based on tear film breakup time (TFBUT) and the Schirmer test. After 8 weeks of treatment, the mean CFS scores were significantly lower in both the groups, compared with the baseline values, and the CFS score of the FML group at week 2 was significantly lower than that of the CsA group (P = 0.042). The OSDI scores improved significantly in both the groups throughout the study, and the OSDI score in the FML group at week 4 was significantly lower than that of the CsA group (P = 0.042). After 8 weeks of therapy, the conjunctival goblet cell density was significantly higher in both the groups (P < 0.001 for both) compared with the baseline values. Conjunctival congestion was reduced in both the groups throughout the study, and the severity in the FML group was significantly less at week 4 compared with that in the CsA group (P = 0.035). The TFBUT in the FML group at week 8 was significantly longer than in the CsA group (P = 0.04). Treatment using topical 0.1% FML provided faster improvement in the symptoms of ocular dryness in SS patients compared with topical 0.5% CsA.

Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of 0.3% sodium hyaluronate (HA) compared to recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor (rb-bFGF) for the treatment of corneal epithelial abrasion caused by mechanical damage in Chinese patients., Methods: Thirty patients were randomly assigned to the HA or rb-bFGF treatment group. The HA group was treated with 0.3% HA and 0.5% levofloxacin, and the rb-bFGF group was treated with topical rb-bFGF and 0.5% levofloxacin. The primary endpoint was the clinical effectiveness rates at day 3. Secondary endpoints were the dimensions of the wound area and the percentage of wound closure., Results: After 3 days of treatment, the clinical effectiveness rates of the HA group and the rb-bFGF group were 86.67% (13/15) and 93.33% (14/15), respectively. The dimensions of the wound area were reduced from 9.83±8.50 to 0.02±0.06 mm(2) for the HA group at day 7, and from 10.58±9.94 to 0.02±0.07 mm(2) for the rb-bFGF group. At day 3, the wound closure was almost complete in both groups; 94.73% in the HA group compared to 95.77% in the rb-bFGF group (P>0.05)., Conclusion: Topical 0.3% HA provided a promising treatment for superficial corneal abrasion caused by mechanical damage in a manner similar to rb-bFGF.

Aim: To assess effect of combination of symptoms, syndrome and disease on treatment of diabetic gastroparesis with severe nausea and vomiting., Methods: Professor Tong Xiaolin's clinical electronic medical records of patients who were treated between January 1, 2006 and October 1, 2012 were used as a database. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled. General information (name, sex and age), symptoms and blood glucose levels were obtained from the clinic electronic medical record, which was supplemented by a telephone interview. The patient-rated Gastroparesis Cardinal Symptom Index (GCSI) was used to evaluate the severity of the symptoms of gastroparesis. The effects of the treatment were assessed by the change in the severity of the symptoms of gastroparesis and the change in blood glucose between the baseline levels and the post-treatment levels at 1, 2, 4, 8 and 12 wk., Results: Forty-five patients had a mean GCSI nausea and vomiting severity score of 4.21 ± 0.67 and a total GCSI score of 2.77 ± 0.63 before treatment. There was a significant improvement in the nausea and vomiting score at every return visit compared with the baseline score (1 wk: 3.02 ± 1.04 vs 4.18 ± 0.71, P < 0.001; 2 wk: 2.32 ± 1.25 vs 4.16 ± 0.73, P < 0.001; 4 wk: 2.12 ± 1.26 vs 4.12 ± 0.73, P < 0.001; 8 wk: 1.79 ± 1.09 vs 4.24 ± 0.77, P < 0.001; 12 wk: 0.69 ± 0.92 vs 4.25 ± 0.70, P < 0.001). Twenty-five of the 45 patients had complete resolution of vomiting during the observation period (mean time to resolution was 37.9 ± 27.3 d). The postprandial fullness and early satiety subscale, bloating subscale and total GCSI scores were also improved. Finally, the blood glucose levels improved after treatment, although the change was not significant., Conclusion: Use of the combination of symptoms, syndrome and disease to treat diabetic gastroparesis with refractory nausea and vomiting may be a new treatment option.

Refractory diabetic gastroparesis (DGP), a disorder that occurs in both type 1 and type 2 diabetics, is associated with severe symptoms, such as nausea and vomiting, and results in an economic burden on the health care system. In this article, the basic characteristics of refractory DGP are reviewed, followed by a discussion of therapeutic modalities, which encompasses the definitions and clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapeutic efficacy evaluation of refractory DGP. The diagnostic standards assumed in this study are those set forth in the published literature due to the absence of recognized diagnosis criteria that have been assessed by an international organization. The therapeutic modalities for refractory DGP are as follows: drug therapy, nutritional support, gastric electrical stimulation, pyloric botulinum toxin injection, endoscopic or surgical therapy, and traditional Chinese treatment. The therapeutic modalities may be used alone or in combination. The use of traditional Chinese treatments is prevalent in China. The effectiveness of these therapies appears to be supported by preliminary evidence and clinical experience, although the mechanisms that underlie these effects will require further research. The purpose of this article is to explore the potential of combined Western and traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods for improved patient outcomes in refractory DGP.

In order to develop a completely safe immunogen to replace the traditional inactivated vaccine, a tandem-repeat multiple-epitope recombinant vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) virus (FMDV) type O was developed. It contained three copies each of residues 141 to 160 and 200 to 213 of VP1 of the O/China/99 strain of FMDV coupled with a swine immunoglobulin G heavy-chain constant region (scIgG). The data showed that the multiple-epitope recombinant vaccine elicited high titers of anti-FMDV specific antibodies in swine at 30 days postvaccination (dpv) and conferred complete protection against a challenge with 10³ 50% swine infective doses of the O/China/99 strain. The anti-FMDV specific antibody titers were not significantly different between the multiple-epitope recombinant vaccine and the traditional vaccine (t test, P > 0.05). The number of 50% pig protective doses was 6.47, which is higher than the number recommended by the World Organization for Animal Health. The multiple-epitope recombinant vaccine resulted in a duration of immunity of at least 6 months. We speculate that the multiple-epitope recombinant vaccine is a promising vaccine that may replace the traditional inactivated vaccine for the prevention and control of FMD in swine in the future.
