The Qinling mountain chain is the highest mountain from the west to the east. The Qinling orogenic belt is a typical compound continental orogenic belt in the world. The Qinling mountain chain is not only a natural demarcation line dividing China into the southern and the northern part with different geography, climate, organisms and river systems, but also a culture boundary between cultures named Huanghe River in the north and the Changjiang River in the south. The Xi'an Qinling Zhongnanshan World Geopark is situated in the major portion of the collision juncture between the south and the north plates of China, which is also typical section of the Qingling orogenic belt. It has been paid a great attention for its long history of geological evolution, intensive tectonics, varieties of rocks, intact stratigraphy, frequent magmatic movements, varieties of metamorphic rocks and abundant geological heritage sites. This paper clarifies the Qinling Zhongnanshan World Geopark of the regional geological background from three aspects which are regional geological setting, evolution of regional geology and regional stratigraphy. With an integrated analysis and classification, the paper details main features of geological relics and geological remains of scientific significance in the geopark, on a base of conducting an investigation and system research for the geological relic resources of the world geopark. It is concluded that it has outstanding universal values in scientific research, Pedagogical potential, tourism and aesthetics. The analysis of the tree radial growth response to climate is crucial for dendroclimatological research. However, the response relationships between tree-ring indices and climatic factors at different timescales are not yet clear. In this study, the tree-ring width of Huashan pine (Pinus armandii) from Huashan in the Qinling Mountains, north-central China, was used to explore the response differences of tree growth to climatic factors at daily, pentad (5 days), dekad (10 days) and monthly timescales. Correlation function and linear regression analysis were applied in this paper. The tree-ring width showed a more sensitive response to daily and pentad climatic factors. With the timescale decreasing, the absolute value of the maximum correlation coefficient between the tree-ring data and precipitation increases as well as temperature (mean, minimum and maximum temperature). Compared to the other three timescales, pentad was more suitable for analysing the response of tree growth to climate. Relative to the monthly climate data, the association between the tree-ring data and the pentad climate data was more remarkable and accurate, and the reconstruction function based on the pentad climate was also more reliable and stable. We found that the major climatic factor limiting Huashan pine growth was the precipitation of pentads 20–35 (from April 6 to June 24) rather than the well-known April–June precipitation. The pentad was also proved to be a better timescale for analysing the climate and tree growth in the western and eastern Qinling Mountains. The formation of the earlywood density of Chinese pine (Pinus tabulaeformis) from Shimenshan in western Qinling was mainly affected by the maximum temperature of pentads 28–32 (from May 16 to June 9). The Dashui porphyry granitoids in the western Qinling Orogen are spatially associated with the Dashui gold deposit, but their ages and tectonic setting have not been well defined yet in previous studies. This paper reports the results and understandings obtained from our original study in geochronology and isotope and element geochemistry. SHRIMP zircon U-Pb dating yielded ages of 213.7 ± 2.7 Ma for granitic stock and 215.1 ± 2.5 and 210.2 ± 1.6 Ma for granitic dikes. The granitoids are characterized by high LREE but low HREE and HFSE. They have (87Sr/86Sr) i ratios of 0.706 to 0.709 and εNd(t) values of −5.3 to −7.6. The majority of zircons in the Dashui granitoids have εHf(t) values ranging from −6.2 to 6.7 and TDM2(Hf) ages from 743 to 1464 Ma. The isotope signatures, together with La/Y and Mg# values, show that the magmas are mainly sourced from partial melting of a subducted slab, and possibly assimilated immature sediments during upward migration. Thus, the Dashui granitoids most likely formed in a volcanic arc where supra-subduction zone melts assimilated lower crustal material no later than 215 Ma. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. The relationship between temperature and drought was investigated using the temperature-sensitive growth of Larix chinensis Beissn in the Qinling Mountains, central China. Extremely high tree-ring width index values (TRWI) agreed well with dry conditions defined by the dryness-wetness index (DWI) obtained from data in Chinese historical documents and climate-related papers between 1814 and 1956 (before the short of instrumental measurements); the reverse applied to extremely low TRWI values. The main severe drought epochs occurred from the late 1850s to the 1870s, the 1920s to 1930s and in the 2000s, whereas wet spells occurred from 1817-1827 and 1881-1886. The droughts in the 2000s exhibited a similar pattern as the ones from the 1920s to 1930s, with obviously an increasing temperature. The variation of tree growth agreed well with other reconstructed temperature series from nearby and remote regions, suggesting that Larix chinensis could respond to broad-scale climate variability. This paper introduces a preliminary study on the climate adaptive design of green rural houses in the Qinling mountainous region of west China. Based on literature reviews and field investigations on the existing traditional and contemporary rural houses in the researched region, the folk wisdom implied in the traditional rural houses, the perceptions and expectations of local residents, and the inheritance of folk wisdom in contemporary rural houses, are identified and discussed. The large Huachanggou gold deposit, on the southern margin of the Mian-Lue Suture in western Qinling Orogen (central China), is hosted in the Devonian Sanhekou Group composed of spilite, limestone and phyllite. The mineralization is considered to have occurred in three stages: (1) Early quartz-pyrite veins, (2) Middle quartz-sulphides veins, and (3) Late carbonate-quartz veinlets, with gold being introduced mainly in the second stage. Quartz formed in the two earlier stages contains four types of fluid inclusions, namely (1) Pure CO2, (2) CO2-H2O, (3) Solid-bearing and (4) NaCl-H2O, whereas the late-stage minerals contain only the NaCl-H2O inclusions. The inclusions in quartz formed in the early-, middle- and late stages have yielded total homogenization temperatures of 272−385 °C, 232−395 °C and 118−228 °C, respectively, with salinities no higher than 12 wt.% NaCl equiv. For the middle-stage, trapping pressures estimated from the CO2-H2O inclusions for the altered spilite-type (123−326 MPa) and quartz vein-type (132−342 MPa) orebodies correspond to mineralization depths of 12 km and 13 km, respectively. We suggest that fluid boiling and mixing may have caused rapid precipitation of metallic sulphides and native gold. Through boiling and influx of meteoric water, the ore-forming fluid system has evolved from CO2-rich to CO2-poor and from metamorphic to meteoric, as indicated by the decreasing δ18Owater values from the early- to late stages. Integrating the evidence obtained from regional geology, ore deposit geology, fluid inclusion and C-H-O isotope geochemistry, we conclude that the Huachanggou gold deposit is best ascribed to be an orogenic-type system formed in the tectonic setting of the north-vergent oceanic plate subduction along the Mian-Lue Suture during the Late Triassic. In this paper, we present a δ13C record that covers the past 750 years at a resolution of 2 - 3 years which was preserved in a precisely dated stalagmite (DY-1) obtained from the Dayu Cave on the south flank of the Qinling Mountains in central China. Between 1249 AD and 1800 AD, climate-induced vegetation changes appear to have been the primary control on δ13C values at a centennial scale. Variations in precipitation amounts control the residence time of seepage water and may have affected the dissolution of bedrock, prior carbonate precipitation in the unsaturated zone above the cave, and the degassing of CO2 within the cave. These hydrogeochemical processes are likely to have been the most important controls on δ13C levels over annual to decadal scales, and may also have influenced centennial-scale variations. The reduced δ13C value of atmospheric CO2 since the Industrial Revolution may have caused the decreasing trend in δ13C values seen in stalagmite DY-1 after 1800 AD. Increased visitor numbers in the unventilated Dayu Cave over time produced a large amount of CO2, and maintained a raised level of pCO2 in the cave air. This artificially enhanced pCO2 may have decreased the fraction of CO2 degassing, and hence carbonate precipitation, which could partly cause the decreasing trend in the stalagmite δ13C seen over the past 200 years. China is a mainland country rich in natural morel recourses, having records of half of the worldwide 61 morel phylospecies. In this study, 31 collections of ascocarps from the north Qinling Mountains, 4 collections of commercial cultivars from the south Qinling Mountains, and 3 Morchella mycelium clones from commercial cultivars were investigated using the genealogical concordance phylogenetic species recognition (GCPSR) method. Maximum-likelihood was employed for the construction of phylogenetic trees. A total of five phylogenetic species were found among the 38 collections, namely Morchella sp. Mes-8, Mes-9, Mes-13, and Mes-25, and Morchella chensiensis (IF556780), in addition to the false morel (Verpa bohemica). The identification of cultivated Morchella sp. Mel-2, Mel-6, Mel-10, and Mel-12 coincided with that of the commercial farms. A total of 80% (4/5) of yellow morels were new records for the Qinling region, except Mes-19; moreover, a novel monophyletic lineage, Morchella chensiensis, was found to be distinct from the previously reported phylospecies by single gene and combined genes analysis, thus being herein proposed as a new phylospecies. All collections from this study showed continental endemism, and all Qinling Mountains collections were grouped together in rDNA phylogenetic trees. Two new species of the genus Amphinemura, A. albicauda sp. n. and A. dingoidea sp. n. from the southern Qinling Mountains, Foping County of Shaanxi Province, western China, are described based on both sexes and the larval stage. The new species are compared with related taxa, and the A. sinensis species group is defined for an Oriental lineage of the genus. Amphinemura sinensis (Wu, 1926) and A. unihamata (Wu, 1973) are reported from Shaanxi for the first time, and the hitherto unknown female of A. unihamata is described. This study is the first attempt to understand the synergistic impact of anthropogenic and biogenic emissions on summertime ozone (O3) formation in the Guanzhong (GZ) Basin where Xi'an, the oldest and the most populous city (with a population of 9 million) in northwestern China, is located. Month-long (August 2011) WRF-Chem simulations with different sensitivity experiments were conducted and compared with near-surface measurements. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) concentrations was characterized from six surface sites among the Qinling Mountains, and urban air composition was measured in Xi'an city at a tower 100ma.s. The WRF-Chem control experiment reasonably reproduced the magnitudes and variations of observed O3, VOCs, NOx, PM2.5, and meteorological parameters, with normalized mean biases for each parameter within -21 %. Subsequent analysis employed the factor separation approach (FSA) to quantitatively disentangle the pure and synergistic impacts of anthropogenic and/or biogenic sources on summertime O3 formation. The impact of anthropogenic sources alone was found to be dominant for O3 formation. Although anthropogenic particles reduced NO2 photolysis by up to 60 %, the anthropogenic sources contributed 19.1 ppb O3 formation on average for urban Xi'an. The abundant biogenic VOCs from the nearby forests promoted O3 formation in urban areas by interacting with the anthropogenic NOx . The calculated synergistic contribution (from both biogenic and anthropogenic sources) was up to 14.4 ppb in urban Xi'an, peaking in the afternoon. Our study reveals that the synergistic impact of individual source contributions to O3 formation should be considered in the formation of air pollution control strategies, especially for big cities in the vicinity of forests. The carbon balance of forests is controlled by many component processes of carbon acquisition and carbon loss and depends on the age of vegetation, soils, species composition, and the local climate. Thus, examining the carbon balance of different forests around the world is necessary to understand the global carbon balance. Nevertheless, the available information on the carbon balance of Larix principis-rupprechtii forests in the Qinling Mountains remains considerably limited. We provide the first set of results (2010-2013) from a long-term project measuring forest-atmosphere exchanges of CO2 at the Qinling National Forest Ecosystem Research Station (QNFERS), and compare the net ecosystem exchange (NEE) based on biometric measurements with those observed via the eddy covariance method. We also compare the total ecosystem respiration via scaled-up chamber and eddy covariance measurements. The net primary productivity (NPP) was 817.16 ± 81.48 g.C.m-2.y-1, of which DBliving and Dtotal accounted for 77.7%, and 22.3%, respectively. Total ecosystem respiration was 814.47 ± 64.22 g.C.m-2.y-1, and cumulative annual soil respiration, coarse woody debris respiration, stem respiration, and leaf respiration were 715.47 ± 28.48, 15.41 ± 1.72, 35.28 ± 4.78, and 48.31 ± 5.24 g.C.m-2.y-1, respectively, accounting for 87.85%, 1.89%, 4.33%, and 5.93% of the total ecosystem respiration. A comparison between ecosystem respiration from chamber measurements and that from eddy covariance measurements showed a strong linear correlation between the two methods (R2 = 0.93). The NEE of CO2 between forests and the atmosphere measured by eddy covariance was -288.33 ± 25.26 g.C.m-2.y-1, which revealed a carbon sink in the L. principis-rupprechtii forest. This number was 14% higher than the result from the biometric measurements (-336.71 ± 25.15 g.C.m-2.y-1). The study findings provided a cross-validation of the CO2 exchange measured via biometric and eddy covariance, which are beneficial for obtaining the true ecosystem fluxes, and more accurately evaluating carbon budgets. Soil degradation has been reported worldwide. To better understand this degradation, we selected Pinus armandii and Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata forests, and a mixed forest of Q. aliena var. acuteserrata and P. armandii in the Qinling Mountains in China for our permanent plots and conducted three investigations over a 20-year period. We determined the amounts of available nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the soil to track the trajectory of soil quality and compared these with stand characteristics, topographic and climatic attributes to analyze the strength of each factor in influencing the available N and P in the soil. We found that the soil experienced a severe drop in quality, and that degradation is continuing. Temperature is the most critical factor controlling the soil available N, and species composition is the main factor regulating the soil available P. Given the huge gap in content and the increasing rate of nutrients loss, this reduction in soil quality will likely negatively affect ecosystem sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The correspondence between five precipitation products, including CMORPH, GPCP-2, TRMM 3B43, GPCC, and ITPCAS, and ground-based measurements of precipitation were evaluated on annual, seasonal, and monthly scales during 2000–2014 in the Qinling-Daba Mountains over China, which is a significant area with vital value of climate and hydrology. Performances of the precipitation products in the relatively arid/humid years were also analyzed. In general, ITPCAS data displayed the highest accuracy, GPCP-2 and CMORPH data showed relatively poor performance, and GPCC and TRMM 3B43 data were average at different temporal scales among the five precipitation products. The Pearson correlation coefficient of each station had minor fluctuations for the five precipitation products. A larger deviation was found at Wudu station, most likely due to the undulating terrain. The performances of the precipitation products from highest to least accuracy are as follows: ITPCAS > TRMM 3B43 > GPCC > GPCP-2 > CMORPH. Except for CMORPH (-20.76%), the percentage precipitation differences (PPDs) of the other four precipitation products fluctuated in the range of 10% during the relatively arid (2001) and humid (2011) years. In addition, all precipitation products and ground gauge observed precipitation did not show an obvious gradient with altitude, which is different from that in other mountainous areas and is perhaps due to complex terrain, lack of observation in high altitudes, and precipitation undercatch. In consideration of the significance of Qinling-Daba Mountains as the geographic and ecological dividing lines, the present study may provide a new perspective for hydrological, climatic, and ecological researches and practices in local and other mountainous areas. The concentrations and stoichiometry of certain elements (carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus) are critical to the maintenance of plant functional and environmental adaptation during plant growth. We explore how the concentrations of C, N and P and the ratios of C:N, C:P, and N:P in the leaves of differently aged Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr. plantations changed with growing season and stand age from 2012 to 2015 in the Qinling Mountains, China. The results showed that the element concentration and stoichiometric ratios in leaves were significantly affected by sampling month, stand age and sampling year; and multiple correlations with stand age were observed in different growing seasons. Compared to global element concentrations and stoichiometry in plants, the leaves of larch stands in the study region had higher C and P concentrations and C:N and C:P ratios but lower N concentrations and N:P ratios than global levels. The leaf N:P ratios of all of the larch stands were generally less than 14, suggesting that the growth of larch stands was limited by N in the study region. Large-scale Quercus variabilis natural secondary forests are protected under the Natural Forest Protection (NFP) program in China to improve the ecological environment. However, information about nutrient characteristics and carbon (C) storage is still lacking. Plant biomass and C, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry of tree tissues, shrubs, herbs, litter, and soil were determined in young, middle-aged, near-mature and mature Quercus variabilis secondary forests in the Qinling Mountains, China. Tree leaf N and P concentrations indicated that the N-restricted situation worsened with forest age. The per hectare biomass of trees in decreasing order was near-mature, mature, middle-aged, then young stands. The majority of the biomass was in the stems (44.88-48.15%), followed by roots (24.54-28.68%), and branches (10.15-14.16%), and leaves made up the lowest proportion (2.86-3.55%) of trees. C storage at plant layer increased significantly with age, reaching maximum values in near-mature stand (100.4 Mg·ha-1) and then decreasing in mature stands. Soil C storage at a depth of 0 to 100 cm was 82.8, 96.8, 85.8, 104.2 Mg·ha-1, and C storage of forest ecosystem was 122.8, 163.0, 184.9, 178.3 Mg·ha-1 in young, middle-aged, near-mature, mature stands, respectively. The giant panda ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is one of the most endangered animals in the world, and it is recognized worldwide as a symbol for conservation. A previous study showed that wild and captive pandas, especially those of the Qinling subspecies, were exposed to toxicants in their diet of bamboo; the ultimate origin of these toxicants is unknown. Here we show that atmospheric deposition is the most likely origin of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants ( POPs) in the diets of captive and wild Qinling pandas. Average atmospheric deposition was 199, 115, and 49 g·m−2·yr−1 in the center of Xi'an City, at China's Shaanxi Wild Animal Research Center ( SWARC), and at Foping National Nature Reserve ( FNNR), respectively. Atmospheric deposition of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg, Co, Cu, Zn, Mn, and Ni) and POPs was highest at Xi'an City, intermediate at SWARC, and lowest at FNNR. Soil concentrations of the aforementioned heavy metals other than As and Zn also were significantly higher at SWARC than at FNNR. Efforts to conserve Qinling pandas may be compromised by air pollution attendant to China's economic development. At present, there is limited research on the effect of climate change on the growth of trees in the Qinling Mountains, and the effect of altitude has rarely been considered. In order to accurately grasp the impact of climatic factors on the natural forest in this region, the effect of water and temperature conditions on the radial growth of Pinus armandii was studied according to dendroclimatology principles. Response function and multivariate regression methods were applied to study the response of the tree-rings, including earlywood width and latewood width, of P. armandii at three elevations (1600-1800, 1800-2000, 2000-2200 m) to climate change in this region. The results showed that the radial growth of P. armandii at the three elevations contained rich climatic information. The tree-ring widths at the three elevations were significantly negatively correlated with September temperature of the previous year and May temperature of the current year (P < 0.05) and were also negatively correlated with August precipitation of the previous year and May precipitation of the current year. The late-wood width of P. armandii at 1600-1800 m and 1800-2000 m was less sensitive to temperature and precipitation than that of the earlywood. The latewood width of P. armandii at 2000-2200 m was significantly negatively correlated with December temperature of the previous year and May temperature of the current year (P < 0.01), and was significantly and positively correlated with August precipitation of the previous year (P < 0.05). Characteristic analysis of the special years showed that large quantities of precipitation in September and October of the previous year were more likely to result in the formation of a very wide tree-ring. High spring and summer temperatures and less precipitation from April to June more likely resulted in the formation of extremely narrow tree-rings. Therefore, high precipitation in autumn of the previous year was conducive to the growth of P. armandii, whereas high temperature and drought in spring and summer inhibited the growth of P. armandii. An integrated study involving whole-rock and Sr-Nd-Hf isotope geochemistry and zircon geochronology and trace element combined with detailed field investigation was carried out for the composite Meiwu batholith in the West Qinling orogenic belt of central China to probe the origins of its compositional diversity and its emplacement history. The batholith is composed of quartz diorite, granodiorite and biotite granite, with abundant mafic magmatic enclaves and minor tonalitic enclaves in the granodiorite. The crystallization age of the batholith is ~240-245Ma. Geochemical and Sr-Nd-Hf isotopic data indicate that the magmas that formed the quartz diorite and the mafic enclaves were derived by partial melting of enriched lithosphere mantle, followed by variable degrees of hybridization with crustal magmas in deep crustal hot zones. These initially heterogeneous, hybrid magmas successively intruded into the upper crust and coalesced into a large magma chamber. Zircon trace element and Hf isotopic compositions suggest that the outer fine-grained part of the quartz diorite pluton crystallized from a less differentiated magma as a result of rapid cooling and thus preserved its initial heterogeneities, whereas the inner medium- grained part of the quartz diorite pluton crystallized from a convecting, isotopically homogeneous magma that had undergone advanced magmatic differentiation. The Sr-Nd-Hf isotope compositions of the mafic magmatic enclaves are strikingly similar to those of the host granodiorite, implying their isotopic equilibration. The tonalitic enclaves have high Sr/Y ratios and most probably represent magmas derived from partial melting of thickened mafic lower crust. The Sr- Nd-Hf isotope data suggest that the granodiorite and biotite granite were dominantly derived from isotopically heterogeneous crustal sources. However, the granodiorite also has relatively high Mg#, Cr, and Ni, indicating a minor contribution from a mantle source. The granodiorite was constructed incrementally from a number of discrete melt batches that were generated by partial melting of mafic lower crust under variable water fugacity. These melt batches did not assemble into a large magma chamber and thus preserved their source chemical features. The granodiorite magma was also replenished by mafic and high Sr/Y magmas, resulting in abundant and compositionally diverse magmatic enclaves. The biotite granite formed by the successive accumulation of discrete magma pulses generated by dehydration melting of mafic lower crust under water-absent conditions. These magma pulses coalesced into a small single magma chamber where they underwent fractional crystallization. The various rock types exhibit distinct geochemical variations, indicating that the Meiwu batholith was constructed from multiple injections of magma over a protracted period. Fractional crystallization, assimilation, magma mixing and/or mingling occurred during magma ascent and at the emplacement level. Chinese cork oak (Quercus variabilis) forests are protected on a large-scale under the Natural Forest Protection (NFP) program in China to improve the ecological environment. However, information about carbon (C) storage to increase C sequestration and sustainable management is lacking. Biomass, C, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) storage of trees, shrubs, herb, litter and soil (0-100 cm) were determined from destructive tree sampling and plot level investigation in approximately 30-year old Chinese cork oak forests on the south slope of the Qinling Mountains. There was no significant difference in tree components' biomass estimation, with the exception of roots, among the available allometric equations developed from this study site and other previous study sites. Leaves had the highest C, N and P concentrations among tree components and stems were the major compartments for tree biomass, C, N and P storage. In contrast to finding no difference in N concentrations along the whole soil profile, higher C and P concentrations were observed in the upper 0-10 cm of soil than in the deeper soil layers. The ecosystem C, N, and P storage was 163.76, 18.54 and 2.50 t ha-1, respectively. Soil (0-100 cm) contained the largest amount of C, N and P storage, accounting for 61.76%, 92.78% and 99.72% of the total ecosystem, followed by 36.14%, 6.03% and 0.23% for trees, and 2.10%, 1.19% and 0.03% for shrubs, herbs and litter, respectively. The equations accurately estimate ecosystem biomass, and the knowledge of the distribution of C, N and P storage will contribute to increased C sequestration and sustainable management of Chinese cork oak forests under the NFP program. Quantitative trait differences are often assumed to be correlated with molecular variation, but the relationship is not certain, and empirical evidence is still scarce. To address this issue, we sampled six populations of the cereal aphid Sitobion avenae from areas north and south of the Qinling Mountains, and characterized their molecular variation at seven microsatellite loci and quantitative variation at nine life-history traits. Our results demonstrated that southern populations had slightly longer developmental times of nymphs but much higher lifetime fecundity, compared to northern populations. Of the nine tested quantitative characters, eight differed significantly among populations within regions, as well as between northern and southern regions. Genetic differentiation in neutral markers was likely to have been caused by founder events and drift. Increased subdivision for quantitative characters was found in northern populations, but reduced in southern populations. This phenomenon was not found for molecular characters, suggesting the decoupling between molecular and quantitative variation. The pattern of relationships between FST and QST indicated divergent selection and suggested that local adaptation play a role in the differentiation of life-history traits in tested S. avenae populations, particularly in those traits closely related to reproduction. The main role of natural selection over genetic drift was also supported by strong structural differences in G-matrices among S. avenae populations. However, cluster analyses did not result in two groups corresponding to northern and southern regions. Genetic differentiation between northern and southern populations in neutral markers was low, indicating considerable gene flow between them. Traditionally, a limited number of species and genera dominate the tree stock in streets and urban sites, and recent surveys in European and North American cities show that few species/genera continue to dominate. Yet, over the past decades, a growing proportion of those commonly used species have shown increasing difficulties to cope with urban sites. This has led to considerable and persistent arguments for using a more varied range of trees, including stress-tolerant species, at urban paved sites. This study examined forest systems occurring between 1300-2200 m asl. in the Qinling Mountains, China, in order to evaluate the oriental white oaks (Quercus aliena var. acuteserrata Maximowicz ex Wenzig) growth and development in warm and dry forest habitats and hence evaluate its potential for urban paved sites in northern parts of central Europe and in adjoining milder parts of northern Europe. In total, 102 oriental white oak where found in the studied plots and here showed very promising development in habitats experiencing drier conditions than those in park environments in Copenhagen, and is therefore interesting for urban paved sites were the demands of a greater catalogue of tolerant trees are highly needed. Sinopodophyllum hexandrum is an important medicinal plant whose genetic diversity must be conserved because it is endangered. The Qinling Mts. are a S. hexandrum distribution area that has unique environmental features that highly affect the evolution of the species. To provide the reference data for evolutionary and conservation studies, the genetic diversity and population structure of S. hexandrum in its overall natural distribution areas in the Qinling Mts. were investigated through inter-simple sequence repeats analysis of 32 natural populations. The 11 selected primers generated a total of 135 polymorphic bands. S. hexandrum genetic diversity was low within populations (average He = 0.0621), but higher at the species level (He = 0.1434). Clear structure and high genetic differentiation among populations were detected by using the unweighted pair group method for arithmetic averages, principle coordinate analysis and Bayesian clustering. The clustering approaches supported a division of the 32 populations into three major groups, for which analysis of molecular variance confirmed significant variation (63.27%) among populations. The genetic differentiation may have been attributed to the limited gene flow (Nm = 0.3587) in the species. Isolation by distance among populations was determined by comparing genetic distance versus geographic distance by using the Mantel test. Result was insignificant (r = 0.212, P = 0.287) at 0.05, showing that their spatial pattern and geographic locations are not correlated. Given the low within-population genetic diversity, high differentiation among populations and the increasing anthropogenic pressure on the species, in situ conservation measures were recommended to preserve S. hexandrum in Qinling Mts., and other populations must be sampled to retain as much genetic diversity of the species to achieve ex situ preservation as a supplement to in situ conservation. The East Qinling region in central China, hosting several tens of Mesozoic magmatic-hydrothermal Mo deposits, is one of the largest molybdenum belts in the world. The Zhifang Mo deposit is hosted in volcanic rocks of the Xiong'er Group in the Waifangshan area, Qinling Orogen. Previous studies variously correlated the mineralization in this deposit with Yanshanian magmatism or Palaeo-Mesoproterozoic volcanic-hydrothermal events. The orebodies are associated with quartz veins and controlled by subsidiary faults of the Machaoying Fault. The ore-forming process can be divided into the early, middle and late stages and is characterized by quartz-pyrite, quartz-polymetallic sulphide and quartz-carbonate veins, respectively. The early-stage quartz is structurally deformed, suggesting a compressional tectonic regime; the middle-stage sulphides fill the fractures of the early-stage assemblages and show no deformation, suggesting a tensional setting; the late-stage veins mostly infill the open-space fissures. Three types of fluid inclusions (FIs) are identified at the Zhifang deposit: H2O-NaCl (W-type), CO2-rich (C-type) and daughter mineral-bearing inclusions (S-type). Fluid inclusions of early-stage quartz homogenize between 380 and 470 °C, with salinities ranging from 0.4 to 9.6 wt.% NaCl equiv., whereas the late-stage calcite contains only the W-type FIs with homogenization temperatures of lower than 240 °C, and salinities of 0.4-8.7 wt.% NaCl equiv. This indicates that the ore fluid system evolved from CO2-rich, probably metamorphic hydrothermal to CO2-poor, meteoric fluid. All three types of FIs can be observed in the middle-stage quartz, and even in the microscopic domain of a crystal, suggesting that this heterogeneous association was trapped from a boiling fluid system. These FIs homogenized at temperatures ranging from 250 to 360 °C and display two salinity clusters of <18.5 and 29.1-29.9 wt.% NaCl equiv. These results suggest that metal precipitation resulted from fluid boiling. The estimated trapping pressures of FIs range from 101 to 285 MPa, suggesting an alternating lithostatic-hydrostatic fluid system, which was controlled by a fault-valve at the depth of 10 km. The δ34S values of ore minerals from the Zhifang Mo deposit show a range between −11.8‰ and 6.0‰, with a bimodal distribution. The early-stage pyrite has a positive δ34S value of 6.0‰ that is similar to the host rocks of the Xiong'er Group and the Taihua Supergroup, suggesting that the wall rocks contributed much of the sulphur to the early-stage pyrite during fluid-rock interaction. However, the δ34S values of the middle-stage sulphides have negative mean and restricted range from −11.8‰ to −4.5‰. The widespread rutile grains coexisting with molybdenite in the middle-stage correlate the negative δ34S values with relatively oxidized fluids. We consider phase separation as an efficient mechanism for ore-fluid oxidation and molybdenum deposition based on fluid inclusions and sulphur isotope data. Geological, fluid inclusion and sulphur isotope data of the Zhifang Mo deposit suggest that the Mo mineralization is unrelated to the Yanshanian magmatism or the Palaeo-Mesoproterozoic volcanic-hydrothermal event. Here we propose that the Zhifang Mo deposit may be considered as an orogenic mineral system, with its formation in an active continental margin related to the northward subduction of the Mian-Lue oceanic plate during the Triassic. The Yangshan gold deposit, Gansu Province, is the largest gold deposit in China and the best representative of the western Qinling gold province. Granite dykes can be observed in the orefield, of which some are spatially associated with the gold orebodies. Gold mineralization was debated between magmatic hydrothermal and metamorphic hydrothermal models in previous studies due to a shortage of precise isotopic ages of the granite dykes in the orefield. In this contribution, we report in-situ zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages combined with Hf isotope and REE data. The age of granite dykes is constrained to be 220.2 ± 3.1 Ma, coeval with the regional development of Triassic granitoids, which resulted from the northward subduction of the Mian-Lue oceanic plate. The εHf(t) values of inherited and new zircon grains from the granite dykes show that the granite dykes have a complex source dominated by sediments which were sourced from the North China Craton, Yangtze Craton and Qinling Orogen, and accumulated in a fore-arc setting. The granite dykes were derived from partial melting of the fore-arc sediment prism induced by the fluids sourced from metamorphic devolatilizaiton of the underthrust Mian-Lue oceanic plate. The Yangshan gold deposit was formed at about 190 Ma, some 30 Myr later than the intrusion of the granite dykes, ruling out the possibility that gold mineralization was caused by Triassic granitic magmatism. The Yangshan gold deposit is a transitional system between Carlin- and orogenic-types that resulted from continental collision orogeny, metallogeny and fluid flow. The Qinling Orogen in central China preserves the records of a complex geological and tectonic history, and also carries abundant mineral resources. Previous investigations on the Qinling Orogen have identified that the final transition from the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean to a continental orogen occurred in the Triassic, although the timing of the oceanic closure and the tectonic affinity of the Triassic Qinling belt have been poorly constrained. In this contribution, we compile the palaeomagnetic data and geological evidence related to sedimentation, magmatism and mineral systems. The palaeomagnetic data show that the Palaeo-Tethys Ocean in the Qinling Orogen gradually closed westward during the Triassic, terminating in the beginning of the Jurassic. Triassic strata are widely developed in the Qinling Orogen and conformably overlie the Permian strata. They are composed of carbonates and siliciclastic rocks that were strongly deformed and weakly metamorphosed during the Late Triassic to Late Jurassic. The Triassic magmatic rocks are dominated by I-type granitoids, with subordinate S-type and alkaline granites and minor carbonatite dykes, with a clear northward transition in lithology and geochemical features from the Mian-Lue Suture. Different types of Triassic mineral systems have been reported from this region, including sedimentary-hosted epizonogenic hydrothermal Hg-Sb, Pb-Zn ± Ag, Au deposits, metamorphic hydrothermal lodes of Au, Ag-Pb-Zn, Mo-Au and Mo, magmatic hydrothermal systems including porphyry Mo, breccia pipe Au, and carbonatite-hosted Mo deposits. We infer that the Triassic Qinling Orogen witnessed synchronous oceanic plate subduction in the west and continental linkage in the east, with a transition from oceanic basin to continental orogen through gradual subduction-related consumption of the oceanic plate. The Palaeo-Tethys Ocean closed in a westward scissor-like fashion in the Triassic and continental collision and extensive crustal shortening in the Jurassic, following which post-collisional extension occurred in the Early Cretaceous. The Jinlongshan gold deposit, Shaanxi Province, is a large Carlin-type deposit in the Western Qinling Gold Province (WQGP) in the Qinling Orogenic Belt, Central China. In this study, we present new EPMA and LA-ICP-MS geochemical data on the Fe-S-As minerals at Jinlongshan, which consist mainly of pyrite, arsenian pyrite and arsenopyrite. Diagenetic pyrite (Py0) is preferentially hosted in the sedimentary rocks as rounded or framboidal aggregates. Three types of hydrothermal pyrite (Py1, Py2 and Py3) and two types of arsenopyrite (Apy1 and Apy2) were newly identified in the ores and wall-rocks: fine-grained Py1 and Apy1 were formed at the early mineralization stage; coarse-grained Py2 and Apy2 were formed at the middle mineralization stage; and Py3 with stibnite were formed at the late mineralization stage. Their trace elements differ in concentrations, associations and rim-core zonations, implying different genesis and crystallization processes. Py0 is As-poor (Au < 0.105 wt% and As < 0.094 wt%); Py1 and Py2 are Au-As-rich (Au = 1.9-113 ppm and As up to 7.270 wt%); Py3 is Au-As-poor (Au = 0.03-11.4 ppm and As < 0.56 wt%); and Apy1 and Apy2 show the highest Au concentration (up to 576 ppm). Co, Ni and As (±Se and Te) occur in pyrite as isomorphism, and Ag, Cu, Pb and Zn are distributed primarily as invisible or visible sulphide inclusions. The dominant state of Au in the hydrothermal Fe-S-As minerals at Jinlongshan is lattice bound Au+1, and possibly invisible Au0 nanoparticles, whereas in the diagenetic Py0, the dominant state is mainly Au0. By integrating the evidence from ore deposit geology, mineral morphology, internal structure and trace element geochemistry of the Au-bearing Fe-S-As minerals, it is concluded that the formation of the Jinlongshan Au deposit may have been related to the regional metallogenic episode at around 170 Ma in the WQGP, which was coeval with the regional tectonic transition from a collisional compression to a late- to post-collisional extension in the Qinling Orogen. The Xunyang Hg-Sb orefield, Shaanxi Province, containing two large (Gongguan and Qingtonggou) and tens of small to medium Hg-Sb deposits, is located in the southern Qinling Orogen. Ore bodies of the deposits are hosted in Devonian dolomite and controlled by a fault system. Ores are mainly present as massive veins, disseminations, breccias and fine veinlets, with cinnabar (Hg) and stibnite (Sb) being the dominant ore minerals. Gangue minerals include quartz, calcite and dolomite. Hydrothermal minerals (quartz and calcite) only contain aqueous fluid inclusions with low homogenization temperature (135-274 °C) and salinity (1.23-12.3 wt.% NaCl equiv.), supporting an epizonogenic hydrothermal origin. The carbon, oxygen and hydrogen isotope data indicate that the ore-forming fluids were mainly sourced from epizonogenic to metamorphic devolatilization of the Sinian−Triassic strata that possibly underthrusted beneath the orefield, with inflow of the circulating meteoric water. Sulphur isotope ratios of stibnite and cinnabar range from 2‰ to 12‰, suggesting a contribution from sedimentary sulphate or sulphate-bearing fluids potted in strata, which is coincident with the δ34S values (3.4-8.6‰) of diagenetic pyrite in the strata. The conclusion drawn from sulphur isotopes is fully supported by the Pb isotope signatures. In addition, the 87Sr/86Sr ratios gradationally increase from ore-hosting dolostones, through ore-barren calcite or low-grade ores, to high-grade ores, indicating that a portion of the fluids originated from a source with higher 87Sr/86Sr values than the host-rocks, which is possibly composed of the Neoproterozoic−Lower Palaeozoic basement of the Xunyang Basin. Integrating the data from ore geology, fluid inclusion microthermometry and stable, radioactive isotope geochemistry, it can be concluded that the deposits in the Xunyang Hg-Sb orefield were formed by epizonogenic hydrothermal fluids mainly sourced from the strata via structural deformation during the North China−Yangtze continental collision. The Xiaoqinling gold field in central China is the second largest orogenic Au province in China. In the Xiaoqinling area, the Dahu Au-Mo deposit is typical because it is one of the five early-discovered large gold deposits, but also unique for its northernmost location and Mo-association. This study shows that the deposit is a fault-controlled lode system formed by a three-stage hydrothermal process. The early-stage pyrite-quartz veins are structurally deformed and broken. The middle-stage molybdenite-pyrite-quartz stockworks (mostly coaxial) infill the cracks of the early-stage veins and minerals. The late-stage open-space filling quartz-carbonate veinlets show a comb-like texture. The early- and late-stage quartz only contains the fluid inclusions of CO2-H2O and H2O-NaCl types, respectively, suggesting an evolution from CO2-rich to CO2-poor; whereas the middle-stage quartz contains fluid inclusions of CO2-H2O, H2O-NaCl, pure CO2 and daughter mineral-bearing types, supporting a boiling fluid system, because they can occur in a microscopic domain of a single crystal, homogenize divergently at similar temperatures clustering between 293 and 410 °C, and show contrasting salinities of <13.6 wt.% and >26.3 wt.% NaCl equiv. The inclusions in early-stage quartz are homogenized at 402-503 °C, with salinities of 4.5-10.4 wt.% NaCl equiv.; and those in late-stage quartz are homogenized at temperatures of <251 °C, with salinities of 14.4-14.8 wt.% NaCl equiv. The trapping pressures of inclusions are estimated to be 138-331 MPa in the early stage and 78-237 MPa in the middle stage, implying that the fluid system alternately fluctuated from lithostatic to hydrostatic, which was controlled by a fault-valve mechanism at depths of >11 km and ~7.8 km, respectively. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope signatures indicate that the fluids originated from metamorphic devolatilization in the early stage, then mixed with meteoric water in the middle stage, and finally replaced by meteoric water in the late stage. Hence, it is concluded, that metal precipitation at the Dahu deposit was mainly caused by fluid boiling, followed by fluid mixing, along with a trans-compressing at the transitional zone from a magmatic arc to back-arc basin, which resulted from the Triassic northward subduction of the Mian-Lue oceanic slab. © 2014 The Authors. The prenatal hormonal environment plays an important role in organizing sex differences in the morphology, physiology and behavior of humans as well as other vertebrates. Currently, all related research on rodents has been focused on Myomorpha. This study presents data on sex differences in the anogenital distance (AGD) and the ratio of the second to the fourth digit length (2D:4D) from 44 wild David's rock squirrels Sciurotamias davidianus captured from the Qinling Mountains, China. This was the first study of a species from Sciuromorpha. The AGD as well as body mass are sexually dimorphic. There are no sex differences or lateral asymmetry in 2D:4D. Significant correlation was not found between AGD and 2D:4D for any paw. The findings indicate that 2D:4D may not be fixed or influenced by the prenatal steroidal environment in David's rock squirrels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zircon U-Pb dating of early Paleozoic granitoids in North Qinling yields three age peaks of ∼500, ∼452 and ∼420 Ma. They can be temporally correlated with high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism at ca. 500 Ma, retrograde granulite-facies metamorphisms at ca. 450 Ma and amphibolite-facies metamorphism at ca. 420 Ma, respectively. The first episode of granitic magmatism is considered to have resulted from continental collision, whereas the second and third episodes of magmatism are attributed to crustal uplifting. Combined with the regional geological setting and new results from high-pressure and ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks, the ca. 500 Ma magmatism is interpreted as the result of partial melting of sedimentary rocks in accretionary wedge between the south Qinling microcontinent and the north Qinling belt including the southern margin of the North China Craton. The ca. 450 Ma intensive magmatism is ascribed to dehydration melting of deeply subducted continental crust at thickened conditions in response to slab breakoff, and the final magmatism in ca. 420 Ma is interpreted as the product of partial melting during the tectonic transition from contraction to extension. The Chinese white pine beetle Dendroctonus armandi Tsai and Li, is arguably the most destructive forest insect in the Qinling Mountains in Northern China. Little is known about the structure of the bacterial communities associated with D. armandi even though this wood-boring insect plays important roles in ecosystem and biological invasion processes that result in huge economic losses in pine forests. The aim of this study was to investigate the composition of the bacterial communities present in the guts of D. armandi at different developmental stages using a culture-independent method involving PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). Analysis of PCR-amplified 16S rRNA gene fragments of bacteria from the guts of larvae, pupae, and male and female adults revealed bacterial communities of low complexity that differed according to the developmental stage. Citrobacter spp. and Pantoea spp. predominated in larvae and adults, whereas Methylobacterium was the dominant genus at the pupal stage. The main difference between the guts of male and female adults was the greater dominance of Citrobacter in females. Previous studies suggest that the bacterial community associated with D. armandi guts may influence insect development. The data obtained in this study regarding the phylogenetic relationships and the community structure of intestinal bacteria at different developmental stages of the D. armandi life cycle contribute to our understanding of D. armandi and could aid the development of new pest control strategies. To contribute to a better understanding of the regeneration strategy of Betula albosinensis forests and the likely reasons behind either the successful recovery or failure after strip clearcutting, we compared the population structures and spatial patterns of B. albosinensis in eight B. albosinensis stands in Qinling Mountains, China. Four cut and four uncut stands were selected, and each sampled using a single large plot (0.25 ha). Results indicated that, on the one hand, B. albosinensis recruitment was scarce (average of 48 stems ha−1) in the uncut stands, relative to the mature population (average of 259 stems ha−1), suggesting a failure of recruitment. On the other hand, the subsequent regeneration approximately 50 years after the strip clearcutting showed that the density of the target species seedlings and saplings has increased significantly, and the current average density of seedlings and saplings was 156 stems ha−1. The clumped spatial pattern of B. albosinensis suggested that their regeneration was highly dependent on canopy disturbance. However, recruitment remained poor in the uncut stands because most gaps were small in scale. The successful regeneration of sunlight-loving B. albosinensis after strip clearcutting was attributed to the exposed land and availability of more sunlight. Bamboo density did not influence B. albosinensis recruitment in the uncut stands. However, stand regeneration was impeded after strip clearcutting; thus, removing bamboo is essential in improving the competitive status of B. albosinensis at the later stage of forest regeneration after clearcutting. The moderate severity of disturbance resulting from strip clearcutting reversed the degeneration trend of primary B. albosinensis stands. This outcome can help strike a balance between forest conservation and the demand for wood products by releasing space and exposing the forested land for recruitment. Cyclospora spp. have been identified as one of the most important intestinal pathogens causing protracted diarrhea in animals and human beings. To determine the Cyclospora species in the non-human primate Rhinopithecus roxellanae, a total of 71 fecal samples from 19 endangered snub-nosed monkeys in Shaanxi province were collected and examined using Sheater’s sugar flotation technique and by sequencing the fragments of 18S rDNA. Only two Cyclospora isolates from 2 golden snub-nosed monkeys (R. roxellanae) were obtained and identified between July 2011 and August of 2012. The sequences of the 18S rDNA for the two Cyclospora isolates were 477 bp, with no nucleotide variation between them. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 18S rDNA sequences revealed that the two Cyclospora isolates were posited into the clade Cyclospora spp. and sistered to C. colobi. These results first showed that Cyclospora infection occurred in R. roxellanae in hot and rainy weather, which would provide useful information for further understanding the molecular epidemiology of Cyclospora spp. and the control of Cyclospora infection in non-human primates as well as in human beings. A total of 290 tree-ring samples, collected from six sites in the West Qinling Mountains of China, were used to develop six new standard tree-ring chronologies. In addition, 73 proxy records were assembled in collaboration with Chinese and international scholars, from 27 publically available proxy records and 40 tree-ring chronologies that are not available in public datasets. These records were used to reconstruct annual mean temperature variability in the West Qinling Mountains over the past 500 years (AD 1500–1995), using a modified point-by-point regression (hybrid PPR) method. The results demonstrate that the hybrid PPR method successfully integrates the temperature signals from different types of proxies, and that the method preserves a high degree of low-frequency variability. The reconstruction shows greater temperature variability in the West Qinling Mountains than has been found in previous studies. Our temperature reconstruction for this region shows: 1) five distinct cold periods, at approximately AD 1520–1535, AD 1560–1575, AD 1610–1620, AD 1850–1875 and AD 1965–1985, and four warm periods, at approximately AD 1645–1660, AD 1705–1725, AD 1785–1795 and AD 1920–1945; 2) that in this region, the 20th century was not the warmest period of the past 500 years; and 3) that a dominant and persistent oscillation of ca. 64 years is significantly identified in the 1640–1790 period. The aim of the study was to investigate knowledge and use of wild food plants and fungi in Han (i.e. Chinese) nationality villages in central China, including famine plants used in the respondents' childhood. A valley adjacent to the extremely species-rich temperate forest vegetation of the Taibai Nature Reserve was chosen. Eighty-two people from 5 villages took part in the study. Altogether, 159 wild food plant species and 13 fungi folk taxa were mentioned by informants. The mean number of freelisted wild foods was very high (24.8; median - 21.5). An average respondent listed many species of wild vegetables (mean - 17, median - 14.5), a few wild fruits (mean - 5.9 and median - 6) and very few fungi (mean - 1.9, median - 1), which they had eaten. Over 50% of respondents mentioned gathering the young shoots or leaves of Celastrus orbiculatus, Staphylea bumalda and S. holocapra, Caryopteris divaricata, Helwingia japonica, Pteridium aquilinum, Pimpinella sp., Amaranthus spp., Matteucia stru-thiopteris, Allium spp., Cardamine macrophylla and Chenopodium album. Only one species of fruits (Schisandra sphenanthera) and none of the mushrooms were mentioned by over half of the respondents. Although very diverse, it can be noted that the use of wild vegetables has decreased compared to the second half of the 20th century, as informants listed several plants which they had stopped using (e.g. Abelia engleriana) due to the availability of cultivated vegetables and other foodstuffs. Igneous rock textures reflect the cooling history of the parental magma. Combined with chemical data, they can provide physical and chemical information about the evolution of a magma body. The petrographic textures and chemical compositions of 21 coarse- and fine-grained granite samples along an ∼250 m horizontal outcrop of the Shanggusi granite porphyry are presented in this case study. The coarse-grained granite porphyry is an early intrusion, and the fine-grained granite dykes, mostly intruded into the granite porphyry, are later intrusions. The studied samples have nearly homogeneous major element bulk-rock and mineral compositions, but show large variations in their trace element compositions and textural characteristics. The trace element data suggest the influence of hydrous fluids (possibly enriched in CO2, F, and Cl) in the evolution of the plutonic body. Textural analysis of the coarse-grained granite porphyry indicates that the crystal size distribution (CSD) slopes, intercepts and total numbers of groundmass decrease from the center to the margin of the intrusion in contrast to the maximum diameter of the crystals (Lmax) (average length of the four largest quartz crystals for each sample); however, most fine-grained samples and the groundmass of the coarse-grained samples show concave-down CSDs, indicating textural coarsening. Quartz CSDs in the coarse-grained samples are kinked, with a steep-sloped log–linear section representing small crystals (<1 mm) and a shallow-sloped log–linear section representing large crystals (>1 mm). These two crystal populations are interpreted as resulting from a shift in cooling regime. The straight CSDs of two fine-grained samples may be due to a different cooling history. In general, the spatial variation of the CSD patterns can be attributed to various degrees of overgrowth and mechanical compaction. The quartz phenocrysts in several coarse-grained samples exhibit a high degree of alignment, which may be the result of magmatic flow. By integrating the field geology, geochemistry and quantitative textural data from the horizontal profile of the Shanggusi granite porphyry, it is suggested that hydrous fluids at the top of the intrusion not only controlled the fractionation of elements but also affected its cooling history. Fluid migration-controlled undercooling can explain the solidification processes in the Shanggusi intrusion, and may also be prevalent in other fluid-rich shallow intrusions. Quantitative integration of textural and geochemical data for igneous rocks can contribute to our understanding of the relationships between physical and chemical processes in a magma system, and provide relatively comprehensive insights into the petrogenesis of granites. Mesozoic granitoids are widespread in the Qinling-Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt. Precise U-Pb dating on these granitoids can reveal the evolution of the continental collision orogen and thus provide information on the nature of magma sources. This study presents zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb dating and whole-rock geochemical analyses for two intrusions at Changba and Huangzhuguan in western Qinling. Zircon U-Pb ages for central and marginal phases of the Huangzhuguang intrusion are 214±1 Ma and 213±3 Ma, respectively. Zircons from the Changba intrusion yield a dominant cluster with an U-Pb age of 213±2 Ma. Collectively, these ages are younger than ages of 220 to 240 Ma for ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism due to the continental collision between the South China Block and the North China Block, corresponding to syn-exhumation magmatism. Some inherited zircons occur in the Changba intrusion, yielding a weighted mean of 206Pb/238U ages at 757±14 Ma. This indicates that the Changba intrusion has the crustal source of mid-Neoproterozoic ages and a tectonic affinity to the South China Block. Geochemically, the two intrusuons are both rich in LILE and LREE but depleted in HFSE and HREE, similar to arc-type igneous rocks. The Huangzhuguang intrusion exhibits linear correlations between SiO2 and the other major oxides, implying chemical evolution from a cognate magma source. It contains mafic enclaves, suggesting possible mixing of felsic-mafic magmas. The Changba granite is rich in Si and K but poor in Fe and Mg as well as has a high value of Fe*, suggesting strong differentiation of granitic magma. Therefore, the two intrusions were derived from the Late Triassic anatexis of the continental crust of different compositions in the northern margin of South China Block. For group-living primates, the information on postconflict management is crucial for understanding primate competition and cooperation. However, such information is poorly known for snub-nosed monkeys, especially for wild populations. In this study, from September 2007 to June 2008, we investigated postconflict behavior among adult females Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys Rhinopithecus roxellana within one-male units in a wild, provisioned group in the Qinling Mountains of China by means of the time-rule method and the PC-MC method. We obtained a total of 81 PC-MC pairs and each individual was involved in only 0.004 aggressive behavior per observation hour. The first affiliative behavior was more likely to occur within the first minute after a conflict. The postconflict affiliative behaviors most often seen were contact-sit, embrace and grooming. The affiliative contacts between adult females occur due to selective attraction, i.e. reconciliation. The pattern of postconflict affiliation demonstrates that the R. roxellana belongs to a tolerant species [Current Zoology 56 (2): 222-226, 2010]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate warming is significantly affecting the composition and function of forest ecosystems. However, the forest responses to climate change in sub-humid and temperate areas are understudied compared with cold and semi-arid areas. Here, we investigate the radial-growth responses of two subalpine conifer species along an elevational gradient located in the Qinling Mountains, a sub-humid and temperate area situated in central China. Three sites dominated by larch (Larix chinensis Beissn.) and two other sites dominated by fir (Abies fargesii Franch.) located at different elevations were sampled. L. chinensis at a higher elevation showed more common and stronger climatic signals than A. fargesii at a lower elevation. The radial growth of L. chinensis was limited by low pre-growing season temperatures and showed an increasing growth trend in the last few years. On the other hand, A. fargesii growth was limited by summer water shortage and it was characterized by a declining trend in the most recent decade. Consequently, L. chinensis would benefit from climate warming, whereas A. fargesii could be regarded as a vulnerable tree species to warming-induced drought stress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
