Abstract

Due to their higher planet-star mass-ratios, M dwarfs are the easiest targets for detection of low-mass planets orbiting nearby stars using Doppler spectroscopy. Furthermore, because of their low masses and luminosities, Doppler measurements enable the detection of low-mass planets in their habitable zones that correspond to closer orbits than for Solar-type stars. We re-analyse literature UVES radial velocities of 41 nearby M dwarfs in a combination with new velocities obtained from publicly available spectra from the HARPS-ESO spectrograph of these stars in an attempt to constrain any low-amplitude Keplerian signals. We apply Bayesian signal detection criteria, together with posterior sampling techniques, in combination with noise models that take into account correlations in the data and obtain estimates for the number of planet candidates in the sample. More generally, we use the estimated detection probability function to calculate the occurrence rate of low-mass planets around nearby M dwarfs. We report eight new planet candidates in the sample (orbiting GJ 27.1, GJ 160.2, GJ 180, GJ 229, GJ 422, and GJ 682), including two new multiplanet systems, and confirm two previously known candidates in the GJ 433 system based on detections of Keplerian signals in the combined UVES and HARPS radial velocity data that cannot be explained by periodic and/or quasiperiodic phenomena related to stellar activities. Finally, we use the estimated detection probability function to calculate the occurrence rate of low-mass planets around nearby M dwarfs. Abstract

With time-series spectroscopic observations taken with the Near Infrared Spectrometer (NIRSPEC) at Keck II, we investigated the atmosphere of the close orbiting transiting extrasolar giant planet, HD 189733b. In particular, we intended to measure the dense absorption line forest around 2.3 micron, which is produced by carbon monoxide (CO). CO is expected to be present in the planetary atmosphere, although no detection of this molecule has been claimed yet. To identify the best suited data analysis method, we created artificial spectra of planetary atmospheres and analyzed them by three approaches found in the literature, the deconvolution method, data modeling via chi^2-minimization, and cross-correlation. As a result, we found that cross-correlation and chi^2-data modeling show systematically a higher sensitivity than the deconvolution method. We analyzed the NIRSPEC data with cross-correlation and detect CO absorption in the day-side spectrum of HD 189733b at the known planetary radial velocity semi-amplitude with 3.4 sigma confidence., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

In these proceedings we give a status update of the Calan-Hertfordshire Extrasolar Planet Search, an international collaboration led from Chile that aims to discover more planets around super metal-rich and Sun-like stars, and then follow these up with precision photometry to hunt for new bright transit planets. We highlight some results from this program, including exoplanet and brown dwarf discoveries, and a possible correlation between metallicity and planetary minimum mass at the lowest planetary masses detectable. Abstract

The abilities of radial velocity exoplanet surveys to detect the lowest-mass extra-solar planets are currently limited by a combination of instrument precision, lack of data, and "jitter". Jitter is a general term for any unknown features in the noise, and reflects a lack of detailed knowledge of stellar physics (asteroseismology, starspots, magnetic cycles, granulation, and other stellar surface phenomena), as well as the possible underestimation of instrument noise. We study an extensive set of radial velocities for the star HD 10700 ($\tau$ Ceti) to determine the properties of the jitter arising from stellar surface inhomogeneities, activity, and telescope-instrument systems, and perform a comprehensive search for planetary signals in the radial velocities. We perform Bayesian comparisons of statistical models describing the radial velocity data to quantify the number of significant signals and the magnitude and properties of the excess noise in the data. We reach our goal by adding artificial signals to the "flat" radial velocity data of HD 10700 and by seeing which one of our statistical noise models receives the greatest posterior probabilities while still being able to extract the artificial signals correctly from the data. We utilise various noise components to assess properties of the noise in the data and analyse the HARPS, AAPS, and HIRES data for HD 10700 to quantify these properties and search for previously unknown low-amplitude Keplerian signals. ..., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in the Astronomy and Astrophysics

Abstract

We announce the discovery of a low-mass planet orbiting the super metal-rich K0V star HD77338 as part of our on-going Calan-Hertfordshire Extrasolar Planet Search. The best fit planet solution has an orbital period of 5.7361\pm0.0015 days and with a radial velocity semi-amplitude of only 5.96\pm1.74 m/s, we find a minimum mass of 15.9+4.7-5.3 Me. The best fit eccentricity from this solution is 0.09+0.25-0.09, and we find agreement for this data set using a Bayesian analysis and a periodogram analysis. We measure a metallicity for the star of +0.35\pm0.06 dex, whereas another recent work (Trevisan et al. 2011) finds +0.47\pm0.05 dex. Thus HD77338b is one of the most metal-rich planet host stars known and the most metal-rich star hosting a sub-Neptune mass planet. We searched for a transit signature of HD77338b but none was detected. We also highlight an emerging trend where metallicity and mass seem to correlate at very low masses, a discovery that would be in agreement with the core accretion model of planet formation. The trend appears to show that for Neptune-mass planets and below, higher masses are preferred when the host star is more metal-rich. Also a lower boundary is apparent in the super metal-rich regime where there are no very low-mass planets yet discovered in comparison to the sub-solar metallicity regime. A Monte Carlo analysis shows that this, low-mass planet desert, is statistically significant with the current sample of 36 planets at around the 4.5\sigma\ level. In addition, results from Kepler strengthen the claim for this paucity of the lowest-mass planets in super metal-rich systems. Finally, this discovery adds to the growing population of low-mass planets around low-mass and metal-rich stars and shows that very low-mass planets can now be discovered with a relatively small number of data points using stable instrumentation., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

We report the discovery of a brown dwarf on an eccentric orbit and with a semimajor axis that places it in the brown dwarf desert region around the star HD191760. The star has a spectral type of G3IV/V and a metallicity ([Fe/H]) of 0.29 dex. HD191760 adds to the small number of metal-rich stars with brown dwarf companions. The brown dwarf (HD191760b) is found to have an orbital period of 505.57+/-0.40 days and semimajor axis of 1.35+/-0.01 AU, placing it firmly in the brown dwarf desert. The eccentricity of HD191760b is found to be 0.63+/-0.01, meaning it reaches as close as 0.5 AU from the host star. Dynamical simulations indicate that no inner planets could reside at separations beyond ~0.17 AU due to the disastrous gravity imposed by HD191760b. In addition to these first results we also refine the orbits found for the exoplanets around the stars HD48265, HD143361 and HD154672. Abstract

A range of novel, potent, inhibitors of NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) and NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 2 (NQO2) were synthesised. The therapeutic utility of this could be three-fold: 1) Impairing tumour growth.2) Promoting the transient degradation of the p53 tumour suppressor protein in cells can enhance the activity of conventional anti-cancer drugs. 3) For probing the effects of NQO1 or NOQ2 inhibition within cells. The potential inhibitors were classified as three distinct groups based on the core structure, known as the triazoloacridinones (31), imidazoacridinones (131), and 4-hydroxycoumarins (182 - 195, 197 - 210). The syntheses of the triazoloacridinones (31) and imidazoacridinones (131) were achieved through divergent synthetic routes, so that a large variety of compounds could be made quickly, and economically. A selection of these were then modified to increase potency, improve water solubility, and lower toxicity. The final 4-hydroxycoumarin series (183, 190, 192, 199, 201, 215, 216) was first produced using existing methods. Later, a more desirable route was developed using the 'borrowing hydrogen' methodology, to improve upon the efficiency and yield. All three families of compounds were found to contain potent, nanomolar inhibitors of NQO1 and NQO2, which could inhibit the enzymes in cells, at non-toxic concentrations.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the motivational factors of triathletes in order to better understand the specific motives that drive participate. The study looked specifically at participants in sprint triathlons, the shortest of the three main triathlon competitions. The researchers utilized a modified version of the Motives of Marathoners Scale (MOMS) (Masters et al., 1993). The new instrument, the Motives of Triathletes Scale (MOTS), was piloted used to assess the motivation for triathlon involvement. Participants (n=164) were from three sprint triathlons in Florida and Texas. Separate factorial ANOVAs were employed to discover motivational differences based on various demographic variables. Results indicated significant differences in motives based on gender, age, competitive orientation, and levels of experience. In addition, an interaction between age and gender indicated that females in their 40s had greater Self-esteem motives than males in their 40s. 71. Transformations of the Renaissance iconography of Antichrist : concept and image

Abstract

The thesis analyses the transformations of the image of Antichrist in European art during the Renaissance. Antichrist is defined as the false Christ, based on patristic writings and scriptural exegesis and the typological tradition established in mediaeval illustrated manuscripts and encyclopaedic literature. The introductory section defines the tradition and gives an account of the contrasting Protestant interpretation of Antichrist which developed later. An identification and analysis of Antichrist's typological make-up and mode of rule take up the four succeeding chapters. The further development of the imagery is then explored in a representative selection of influential 15th century illustrated manuscripts and block books. Bosch's Prado Epiphany (1500), Luca Signorelli's The Rule of Antichrist (1499-1504), DUrer's 15 woodcuts of the Apocalypse (1498), and other selected material, are discussed in detail and generally indicate typological expansion, experimental processes in format and presentation and interpretational changes. An analysis of the total content of Bosch's Prado Epiphany adduces arguments supporting the presence of Antichrist depicted as a Jewish priest. Signorelli's, the Rule of Antichrist, is a major endorsement of the traditional viewpoint, confirming the authority and doctrines of the Church of Rome which were re-affirmed during the Counter Reformation in terms which protestants could not accept. A distinct movement towards a clearer and more persuasive message in the block books develops further in the literature of the Lutheran reformation, and by the early 1520s the identification of Antichrist as the pope is sufficiently defined to constitute a second distinctive point of view. Lucas Cranach's Passional Christi und Antichristi (1521), which is based almost entirely upon episodes in Christ's ministry, sets Christ and Antichrist as the pope, in close antithesis. This seems to be a revival of the anti-papal arguments advanced by Nicholas of Dresden in The Old Colour and the New (c.1412). The succeeding chapter tracks the crucial developments in Luther's translations of the September and December Testaments (1522), and other similar publications, which contain definitive anti-papal interpretations of recognised Antichrist chapters in the Apocalypse. A mid-16th-century Apocalypse commentary by Sebastian Meyer, illustrated by Matthew Gerung, adds substantially to the existing body of polemical imagery. Five sub-chapters present a selection of Antichrist themes from the Commentary, which develop notions of the false church, its doctrine and practice, and the differentiation of Protestant and Catholic in relation to truth and error, Christ and Antichrist. The obligation to separate from the false ecclesia was fulfilled at national level in the English Reformation, the subject of the final chapter, where a wide range of imagery confirms yet again the continuing influence of Antichrist's typological make-up. Further issues of importance which are also addressed are the characteristically English traits and attitudes, the imperial principle upholding English sovereignty, and Italian humanist influences.
