W opracowaniu dokonano analizy przekazów kartograficznych ukazujących się na przełomie XVIII i XIX w., których głównym elementem treści są wody źródłowe Polski. W zakresie sposobów przedstawiania i interpretacji elementów hydrograficznych jako podstawowe źródła kartograficzne omówiono, uwzględniajac kryterium skali i kartometryczności, mapy wód źródłowych oraz mapy ogólnogeograficzne. Problem wykorzystania nie w pełni kartometrycznych materiałów kartograficznych do odtworzenia i rekonstrukcji przestrzennych układów systemów rzecznych rozpatrywano na przykładzie dolnego biegu Warty przy ujęciu do Odry, w rejonie Kostrzyna. Analizie poddano dwie rękopiśmienne mapy z XVIII w. (1773 i 1786), porównujac sposoby przedstawiania na nich zasadniczych elementów sieci rzecznej oraz dokonując oceny ich wiarygodności w zakresie możliwości odtworzenia kierunków i zasięgu przemian stosunków wodnych związanych z antropopresja. Dodatkowo treści obu map odniesiono do obrazu dolnego odcinka Warty, zarejestrowanego na mapie z 1928 r., stanowiącej materiał w pełni kartometryczny. Uznano, że mapy rękopiśmienne, tworzone jeszcze przed okresem zastosowania pomiarów terenowych opartych na triangulacji, stanowią bogate źródło informacji o stanie i stopniu przekształceń wód źródłowych, jednak różny poziom ich kartometryczności oraz sposób prezentacji treści hydrograficznej ograniczają ich przydatność w analizach przestrzennych. 59 11 28

Przeprowadzono identyfikację lokalnych systemów krążenia wód podziemnych na obszarze Międzyrzecza Warty i Noteci (1912 km2), które stanowi największą pod względem powierzchni strefę wydm śródlądowych w Wielkopolsce. Dla wód poziomu gruntowego o różnym stopniu połączenia z siecią hydrograficzną, określono warunki zasilania i drenażu oraz dokonano oceny składowych bilansu ich przepływu. Wskazano strefy, gdzie mogą formować się systemy wód podziemnych zagłębień bezodpływowych chłonnych i ewapotranspiracyjnych (retencyjnych), w granicach których wymiana wód odbywa się poprzez infiltrację, wsiąkanie lub parowanie. W analizie wykorzystano cyfrową bazę danych Mapy Hydrograficznej Polski w skali 1: 50 000 oraz wyniki modelowania matematycznego filtracji wód podziemnych przeprowadzonego w odniesieniu do warunków przeciętnych z okresu wielolecia. Założono, że elementem ograniczającym efektywne zasilanie wód podziemnych na terenach wydmowych jest znaczna miąższość utworów piaszczystych (do 30-50 m) i głębokie występowanie zwierciadła wód podziemnych. Wskazano funkcjonowanie stref aktywnych w formowaniu odpływu powierzchniowego oraz bezodpływowych powierzchniowo, szczególnie typu chłonnego (20% powierzchni), które stanowić mogą obszary lokalnie wzmożonego zasilania infiltracyjnego płytkich wód podziemnych i kształtowania tą drogą odpływu podziemnego ze zlewni. Stwierdzono, że doliny Warty i Noteci, jako główne osie drenażu, wymuszają silny odpływ wód podziemnych z centralnej części międzyrzecza, czego efektem jest brak sieci rzecznej. The local groundwater-circulation systems in the Warta-Noteć Interfluve (1912 km2) are identified; this interfluve is the largest area covered with inland dunes in the Wielkopolska Lowland. The alimentation and drainage of the groundwater, which depend to varying degrees of the surficial hydrographic network, are described, and the contributions by the various components determining the flow balance are estimated. The zones are indicated where basins could develop without external drainage, so that all inflowing water is absorbed and can escape (partly) only be evapotranspiration, and within which water is exchanged exclusively through infiltration and evaporation. A digital database of the 1:50,000 Hydrographic Map of Poland, in combination with the results of a mathematical model regarding the groundwater infiltration over time was used for the purpose. It is assumed that the considerable thickness of the sands (up to 30-50 m) and the deep position of the groundwater are responsible for the limited groundwater alimentation in the dune areas. It is shown that zones with and without surface runoff exist; the latter are predominantly (20% by surface area) of the absorbent type and are partly areas of locally enhanced infiltration of groundwater, partly areas with subsurface runoff. It is emphasized that the Warta and Noteć valleys, being the main drainage routes, force a strong groundwater runoff from the central part of the interfluve, where no river network is present.

The dynamics and tendency of change in surface- and groundwater systems depend, among other things, on their susceptibility to various kinds of natural and man-made factors as well as the intensity and duration of their impact. The study presents stages in the assessment of the vulnerability of shallow groundwater to the migration of pollutants coming from the land surface. It was carried out for a typical agricultural catchment situated in the Wielkopolska Lowland (the Mogilnica catchment). Following the basic assumptions of the ranking methods of assessment of groundwater vulnerability (the GOD index), an analysis was made of a selected group of physical parameters of the catchment, including hydrogeological elements which determine the response and resistance of shallow aquifer systems to the impact of man-made factors. Empirical formulae (Bachmat and Collin’s) were employed to calculate the potential time taken by the pollutants to reach the water-bearing horizon, which provided a basis for a classification of the extent and degree of risk to groundwater. The areal distribution of the index of groundwater vulnerability to pollution was presented and analysed against information about the way of development and land-use pattern in the catchment. It was found that its groundwater displayed a low degree of vulnerability due to the fact that most of the catchment area is covered with till which screens the shallow groundwater from the inflow of pollution. An assessment of risk to groundwater resulting from the time of migration of water through the aeration zone showed that more than half of the study area (about 56%) was at medium risk and nearly 20% was at high risk. This means that the migration of potential pollutants can take from 5 to 25 years and from 2 to 5 years, respectively. Attention was also paid to the numerous links of shallow groundwater with surface waters and the deep groundwater system of the Wielkopolska Buried Valley, which is the principal operable aquifer in the study area. Taking into consideration the level of human impact in the catchment, areas least and most exposed to risk were identified; they should be considered especially carefully when planning new investment. The quantification of parameters of the individual catchment subsystems, including the shallow groundwater system, is a starting point for analyses of spatial variability of the parameters and for comparative studies of various units, e.g. catchments, groundwater bodies, or areas with similar land-use patterns. An assessment of the degree of vulnerability of groundwater to pollution can be a crucial element in the preparation of a strategy of sustainable management of water resources in the catchment.
