Abstract

We study how well different types of approaches generalise in the task of 3D hand pose estimation under single hand scenarios and hand-object interaction. We show that the accuracy of state-of-the-art methods can drop, and that they fail mostly on poses absent from the training set. Unfortunately, since the space of hand poses is highly dimensional, it is inherently not feasible to cover the whole space densely, despite recent efforts in collecting large-scale training datasets. This sampling problem is even more severe when hands are interacting with objects and/or inputs are RGB rather than depth images, as RGB images also vary with lighting conditions and colors. To address these issues, we designed a public challenge (HANDS'19) to evaluate the abilities of current 3D hand pose estimators (HPEs) to interpolate and extrapolate the poses of a training set. More exactly, HANDS'19 is designed (a) to evaluate the influence of both depth and color modalities on 3D hand pose estimation, under the presence or absence of objects; (b) to assess the generalisation abilities w.r.t. four main axes: shapes, articulations, viewpoints, and objects; (c) to explore the use of a synthetic hand model to fill the gaps of current datasets. Through the challenge, the overall accuracy has dramatically improved over the baseline, especially on extrapolation tasks, from 27mm to 13mm mean joint error. Abstract

Thanks to the rapid development of CNNs and depth sensors, great progress has been made in 3D hand pose estimation. Nevertheless, it is still far from being solved for its cluttered circumstance and severe self-occlusion of hand. In this paper, we propose a method that takes advantage of human hand morphological topology (HMT) structure to improve the pose estimation performance. The main contributions of our work can be listed as below. Firstly, in order to extract more powerful features, we concatenate original and last layer of initial feature extraction module to preserve hand information better. Next, regression module inspired from hand morphological topology is proposed. In this submodule, we design a tree-like network structure according to hand joints distribution to make use of high order dependency of hand joints. Lastly, we conducted sufficient ablation experiments to verify our proposed method on each dataset. Experimental results on three popular hand pose dataset show superior performance of our method compared with the state-of-the-art methods. On ICVL and NYU dataset, our method outperforms great improvement over 2D state-of-the-art methods. On MSRA dataset, our method achieves comparable accuracy with the state-of-the-art methods. To summarize, our method is the most efficient method which can run at 220:7 fps on a single GPU compared with approximate accurate methods at present. The code will be available at.

6. Pose Estimation for Texture-less Shiny Objects in a Single RGB Image Using Synthetic Training Data

Abstract

In the industrial domain, the pose estimation of multiple texture-less shiny parts is a valuable but challenging task. In this particular scenario, it is impractical to utilize keypoints or other texture information because most of them are not actual features of the target but the reflections of surroundings. Moreover, the similarity of color also poses a challenge in segmentation. In this article, we propose to divide the pose estimation process into three stages: object detection, features detection and pose optimization. A convolutional neural network was utilized to perform object detection. Concerning the reliability of surface texture, we leveraged the contour information for estimating pose. Since conventional contour-based methods are inapplicable to clustered metal parts due to the difficulties in segmentation, we use the dense discrete points along the metal part edges as semantic keypoints for contour detection. Afterward, we exploit both keypoint information and CAD model to calculate the 6D pose of each object in view. A typical implementation of deep learning methods not only requires a large amount of training data, but also relies on intensive human labor for labeling the datasets. Therefore, we propose an approach to generate datasets and label them automatically. Despite not using any real-world photos for training, a series of experiments showed that the algorithm built on synthetic data perform well in the real environment.

8. Efficient Fully Convolution Neural Network for Generating Pixel Wise Robotic Grasps With High Resolution Images

Abstract

This paper presents an efficient neural network model to generate robotic grasps with high resolution images. The proposed model uses fully convolution neural network to generate robotic grasps for each pixel using 400 $\times$ 400 high resolution RGB-D images. It first down-sample the images to get features and then up-sample those features to the original size of the input as well as combines local and global features from different feature maps. Compared to other regression or classification methods for detecting robotic grasps, our method looks more like the segmentation methods which solves the problem through pixel-wise ways. We use Cornell Grasp Dataset to train and evaluate the model and get high accuracy about 94.42% for image-wise and 91.02% for object-wise and fast prediction time about 8ms. We also demonstrate that without training on the multiple objects dataset, our model can directly output robotic grasps candidates for different objects because of the pixel wise implementation., Comment: Submitted to ROBIO 2019

Abstract

This paper presents a vision based robotic system to handle the picking problem involved in automatic express package dispatching. By utilizing two RealSense RGB-D cameras and one UR10 industrial robot, package dispatching task which is usually done by human can be completed automatically. In order to determine grasp point for overlapped deformable objects, we improved the sampling algorithm proposed by the group in Berkeley to directly generate grasp candidate from depth images. For the purpose of package recognition, the deep network framework YOLO is integrated. We also designed a multi-modal robot hand composed of a two-fingered gripper and a vacuum suction cup to deal with different kinds of packages. All the technologies have been integrated in a work cell which simulates the practical conditions of an express package dispatching scenario. Abstract

Background: Tumor immunotherapy can not only eliminate the primary lesion, but also produce long-term immune memory, effectively inhibiting tumor metastasis and recurrence. However, immunotherapy also showed plenty of limitations in clinical practice. In recent years, the combination of nanomaterials and immunotherapy has brought new light for completely eliminating tumors with its fabulous anti-tumor effects and negligible side effects. Methods: The Core Collection of Web of Science (WOSCC) was used to retrieve and obtain relevant literatures on antitumor nano-immunotherapy since the establishment of the WOSCC. Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, CiteSpace, GraphPad Prism, and Excel were adopted to perform statistical analysis and visualization. The annual output, active institutions, core journals, main authors, keywords, major countries, key documents, and impact factor of the included journals were evaluated. Results: A total of 443 related studies were enrolled from 2004 to 2022, and the annual growth rate of articles reached an astonishing 16.85%. The leading countries in terms of number of publications were China and the United States. Journal of Controlled Release, Biomaterials, Acta Biomaterialia, Theranostics, Advanced Materials, and ACS Nano were core journals publishing high-quality literature on the latest advances in the field. Articles focused on dendritic cells and drug delivery accounted for a large percentage in this field. Key words such as regulatory T cells, tumor microenvironment, immune checkpoint blockade, drug delivery, photodynamic therapy, photothermal therapy, tumor-associated macrophages were among the hottest themes with high maturity. Dendritic cells, vaccine, and T cells tend to become the popular and emerging research topics in the future. Conclusions: The combined treatment of nanomaterials and antitumor immunotherapy, namely antitumor nano-immunotherapy has been paid increasing attention. 24. Development and Validation of a Pyroptosis-Related Signature for Predicting Prognosis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has emerged as a primary health problem and threat to global mortality, especially in China. Since pyroptosis as a new field for HCC prognosis is not well studied, it is important to open a specific prognostic model. In this study, consensus clustering method for 42 pyroptosis-related genes to classify 374 HCC patients in the TCGA database. After cox regression analysis of the differentially expressed genes between the two clusters, LASSO-Cox analysis was then performed to construct a pyroptosis-related prognostic model with 11 genes including MMP1, KPNA2, LPCAT1, NEIL3, CDCA8, SLC2A1, PSRC1, CBX2, HAVCR1, G6PD, MEX3A. The ICGC dataset was served as the validation cohort. Patients in the high-risk group had significantly lower overall survival (OS) rates than those in the low-risk group (p < 0.05). COX regression analysis showed that our model could be used as an independent prognostic factor to predict prognosis of patients and was significantly correlated with clinicopathological characteristics. Nomogram showing the stability of the model predicting the 1, 3, 5 year survival probability of patients. In addition, based on the risk model, ssGSEA analysis revealed significant differences in the level of immune cell infiltration and activation of immune-related functional pathways between high and low-risk groups, and patients with the high-risk score may benefit more from treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. Furthermore, patients in the high-risk group were more tend to develop chemoresistance. Overall, we identified a novel pyroptosis-related risk signature for prognosis prediction in HCC patients and revealed the overall immune response intensity of the tumor microenvironment. All these findings make the pyroptosis signature shed light upon a latent therapeutic strategy aimed at the treatment and prevention of cancers.

Abstract

Seagrass meadows, as typical “blue carbon” ecosystems, play critical ecological roles in the marine ecosystem and decline every year. The application of biochar in soil has been proposed as a potential soil amendment to improve soil quality and mitigate global climate change. The effects of biochar on soil bacterial activities are integrally linked to the potential of biochar in achieving these benefits. However, biochar has been rarely applied in marine ecosystems. Whether the application of biochar could work on the seagrass ecosystem remained unknown. In this study, we investigated the responses of sediment and rhizosphere bacterial communities of seagrass Thalassia hemprichii to the biochar addition derived from maize at ratios of 5% by dry weight in the soil during a one-month incubation. Results indicated that the biochar addition significantly changed the sedimental environment with increasing pH, total phosphorus, and total kalium while total nitrogen decreased. Biochar addition significantly altered both the rhizosphere and sediment bacterial community compositions. The significant changes in rhizosphere bacterial community composition occurred after 30days of incubation, while the significant variations in sediment bacterial community composition distinctly delayed than in sediment occurred on the 14th day. Biochar application improved nitrification and denitrification, which may accelerate nitrogen cycling. As a stabilizer to communities, biochar addition decreased the importance of deterministic selection in sediment and changed the bacterial co-occurrence pattern. The biochar addition may promote seagrass photosynthesis and growth by altering the bacterial community compositions and improving nutrient circulation in the seagrass ecosystem, contributing to the seagrass health improvement. This study provided a theoretical basis for applying biochar to the seagrass ecosystem and shed light on the feasible application of biochar in the marine ecosystem. Graphical Abstract

Abstract

The Tibetan Schizothoracinae fish Gymnocypris przewalskii has the ability to adapt to the extreme plateau environment, making it an ideal biological material for evolutionary biology research. However, the lack of well-annotated reference genomes has limited the study of the molecular genetics of G. przewalskii. To characterize its transcriptome features, we first used long-read sequencing technology in combination with RNA-seq for transcriptomic analysis. A total of 159,053 full-length (FL) transcripts were captured by Iso-Seq, having a mean length of 3,445 bp with N50 value of 4,348. Of all FL transcripts, 145,169 were well-annotated in the public database and 134,537 contained complete open reading frames. There were 4,149 pairs of alternative splicing events, of which three randomly selected were defined by RT–PCR and sequencing, and 13,293 long non-coding RNAs detected, based on all-vs.-all BLAST. A total of 118,185 perfect simple sequence repeats were identified from FL transcripts. The FL transcriptome might provide basis for further research of G. przewalskii.

31. Post-traumatic glioma: Report of one case and review of the literature

Abstract

We report one case of brain glioma that developed in the scar of an old brain trauma. A 45-year-old man who presented with seizures; MRI showed a large mass in the right temporal region. Surgical biopsy showed a glioblastoma multiforme. The patient had suffered a cranial trauma in a road accident 10 years previously with an intracerebral hematoma in the right temporal region. This case fulfills the established criteria for a traumatic origin of brain tumors and adds further support to the relationship between cranial trauma and the onset of glioma. As stated by other authors, an association between head trauma and brain tumor risk cannot be ruled out and should be studied further.

Wolbachia pipientis is an intracellular symbiont affecting a variety of arthropods and known to cause reproductive abnormalities in the host. The most ubiquitous Wolbachia protein was purified from infected eggs of Drosophila. The gene encoding this protein, designated as wsp, has been cloned and characterized. The gene can be used as a tool in typing and phylogenetic studies as well as in the investigation of the molecular basis of host-symbiont interactions.

Abstract

Abstract Background The identification of new virus strains is important for the study of infectious disease, but current (or existing) molecular biology methods are limited since the target sequence must be known to design genome-specific PCR primers. Thus, we developed a new method for the discovery of unknown viruses based on the cDNA - random amplified polymorphic DNA (cDNA-RAPD) technique. Getah virus, belonging to the family Togaviridae in the genus Alphavirus, is a mosquito-borne enveloped RNA virus that was identified using the Virus-Discovery-cDNA RAPD (VIDISCR) method. Results A novel Getah virus was identified by VIDISCR from suckling mice exposed to mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus) collected in Yunnan Province, China. The non-structural protein gene, nsP3, the structural protein gene, the capsid protein gene, and the 3'-untranslated region (UTR) of the novel Getah virus isolate were cloned and sequenced. Nucleotide sequence identities of each gene were determined to be 97.1–99.3%, 94.9–99.4%, and 93.6–99.9%, respectively, when compared with the genomes of 10 other representative strains of Getah virus. Conclusions The VIDISCR method was able to identify known virus isolates and a novel isolate of Getah virus from infected mice. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the YN08 isolate was more closely related to the Hebei HB0234 strain than the YN0540 strain, and more genetically distinct from the MM2021 Malaysia primitive strain.

Abstract

The three-dimensional heat transfer and thermal stress of a steel cooling stave in a blast furnace at Maanshan Iron and Steel Co. Ltd. are built. The temperature and thermal stress fields of cooling stave are calculated by using finite element method software ANSYS. The results show the rise in maximum temperature and thermal stress of the stave hot surface is not high when cooling pipe is replaced by cooling elliptical tube. Because of the decrease in the cross-sectional area for cooling elliptical tube, the thickness of the cooling stave is reduced and cooling water flow is saved. As a result, the iron-making cost can be reduced.

Abstract

The cabin environment of a commercial aircraft, including cabin layout and the quality of air supply, is crucial to the airline operators. These aspects directly affect the passengers’ experience and willing to travel. This aim of this thesis is to design the cabin layout for flying wing aircraft as part of cabin environment work, followed by the air quality work, which is to understand what effect the ECS can have in terms of cabin air contamination. The project, initially, focuses on the cabin layout, including passenger cabin configuration, seat arrangement and its own size due to the top requirements, of a conventional aircraft and further into that of a flying wing aircraft. The cabin work in respect of aircraft conceptual design is discussed and conducted by comparing different design approaches. Before the evaluation of cabin air quality, an overall examination of the main ECS components involved in the contaminants access will be carried on and, therefore, attempt to discover how these components influence the property of the concerned contaminants. By case study in the B767 ECS, there are some comments and discussions regarding the relationship between the cabin air contaminations and the passing by ambient environment. The thesis ends up with a conclusion explaining whether or not the contaminated air enters the occupants’ compartments on aircraft and proposing some approaches and engineering solutions to the continue research.

Abstract

The high-temperature H2S removal at 500-700 °C was conducted over CuO-CeO2/ZSM-5 composites prepared with sol-gel method. 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 partially reacting at 500 °C yielded Cu7S4 and Cu2S. The major sulphidation products at 600 °C were Ce2O2S, Cu2S, CuS, and S. Sulphidation of 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 at 700 °C yielded Ce2S3, Cu2S, Cu2S, and S. Sulphidation of 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 with 20 % H2 and 20 % CO generated the same products Ce2O2S, Cu2S, Cu2S, and S. Increase in the degree of crystallinity of 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 resulted in the decrease of sulphur capacity during the sulphidation and regeneration process. Experimental results showed that the activity of CuO improved by adding Ce; 7Cu3Ce/ZSM-5 performed the optimal sulphiation behaviour at 600 °C with sulphur capacity of 1429 μmol/g (micromoles of sulphur per gram) due to the synergy of CuO and CeO2.
