Abstract

Developing new and efficient technologies for environmental remediation is becoming significant due to the increase in global concerns such as climate change, severe epidemics, and energy crises. Air pollution, primarily due to increased levels of H 2 S, SO x , NH 3 , NO x , CO, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, has a significant impact on public health, and exhaust gases harm the natural sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon cycles. Similarly, wastewater discharged to the environment with metal ions, herbicides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, dyes, and aromatics/organic compounds is a risk for health since it may lead to an outbreak of waterborne pathogens and increase the exposure to endocrine-disrupting agents. Therefore, developing new and efficient air and water quality management systems is critical. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are novel materials for which the main application areas include gas storage and separation, water harvesting from the atmosphere, chemical sensing, power storage, drug delivery, and food preservation. Due to their versatile structural motifs that can be modified during synthesis, MOFs also have a great promise for green applications including air and water pollution remediation. The motivation to use MOFs for environmental applications prompted the modification of their structures via the addition of metal and functional groups, as well as the creation of heterostructures by mixing MOFs with other nanomaterials, to effectively remove hazardous contaminants from wastewater and the atmosphere. In this review, we focus on the state-of-the-art environmental applications of MOFs, particularly for water treatment and air pollution, by highlighting the groundbreaking studies in which MOFs have been used as adsorbents, membranes, and photocatalysts for the abatement of air and water pollution. Abstract

Air pollution from road traffic is a serious health risk, especially for susceptible individuals. Single-centre studies showed an association with chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD) and survival after lung transplantation, but there are no large studies.13 lung transplant centres in 10 European countries created a cohort of 5707 patients. For each patient, we quantified residential particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤10 µm (PM 10 ) by land use regression models, and the traffic exposure by quantifying total road length within buffer zones around the home addresses of patients and distance to a major road or freeway.After correction for macrolide use, we found associations between air pollution variables and CLAD/mortality. Given the important interaction with macrolides, we stratified according to macrolide use. No associations were observed in 2151 patients taking macrolides. However, in 3556 patients not taking macrolides, mortality was associated with PM 10 (hazard ratio 1.081, 95% CI 1.000-1.167); similarly, CLAD and mortality were associated with road lengths in buffers of 200-1000 and 100-500 m, respectively (hazard ratio 1.085- 1.130). Sensitivity analyses for various possible confounders confirmed the robustness of these associations.Long-term residential air pollution and traffic exposure were associated with CLAD and survival after lung transplantation, but only in patients not taking macrolides., (Copyright ©ERS 2017.)

Abstract

This paper quantitatively investigates the compositions of the gaseous pollutants in the ambient air of a secondary fiber paper mill. Total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), formaldehyde (HCHO), sulfur compounds (H2S), and hydrocarbon compounds (CxHy) were analyzed on six sampling sites with photo-ionisation detector, acetylacetone spectrophotometric method, and gas detector. The results revealed that, the high levels of TVOC and CxHy were detected at the wet end of paper machine and the office area, respectively; all the H2S contents on the six sites exceeded the limit (0.06 mg m(-3)) seriously; the HCHO concentrations at other five sites were out of the limit (0.10 mg m(-3)) except for the wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, the necessary discussions about the possible pollution sources were considered on the process flow, the chemical agents used, and the ambient conditions in the paper mill. For the sake of air pollution control in paper mills, these remarkable results and analysis lay some technical basis in the following researches that should attract more attentions.

Abstract

Comprehensive surveys conducted at 5-yr intervals were used to estimate sulfur dioxide (SO,) and nitrogen oxides (NO.) emissions from U.S. pulp and paper mills for 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005. Over the 25-yr period, paper production increased by 50%, whereas total SO, emissions declined by 60% to 340,000 short tons (t) and total NO, emissions decreased approximately 15% to 230,000 t. The downward emission trends resulted from a combination of factors, including reductions in oil and coal use, steadily declining fuel sulfur content, lower pulp and paper production in recent years, increased use of flue gas desulfurization systems on boilers, growing use of combustion modifications and add-on control systems to reduce boiler and gas turbine NO, emissions, and improvements in kraft recovery furnace operations.

5. The effects of methanol on the biofiltration of dimethyl sulfide in inorganic biofilters.

Abstract

Air emissions from the pulp and paper industry frequently contain reduced sulfur compounds (RSC), such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS) mixed with volatile organic compounds (VOC) (e.g., methanol, MeOH) and it is desirable to treat either one or both of these groups of compounds. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of VOC (MeOH) on the biofiltration of DMS. Results obtained from continuous experiments using three bench-scale biofilters packed with inorganic material clearly show that MeOH has a positive effect (11-fold increase) on the biofiltration of DMS. Further experiments indicate that MeOH addition enhances biomass concentration and viability (threefold) in the biofilters. However, a suspension of MeOH addition causes a rapid significant increase (twofold) in the removal rate of DMS, suggesting that the presence of MeOH also has a competitive effect on DMS biodegradation. This negative effect was also confirmed in batch experiments. The decrease of biofilter performance with time for a long-term suspension of MeOH addition indicates that MeOH addition is necessary to sustain a high removal rate of DMS in inorganic biofilters. Results on metabolic products of DMS biodegradation demonstrate that DMS is almost completely converted to sulfate in the absence of MeOH, while it is partially oxidized to elemental sulfur in the presence of MeOH. Abstract

Fluidized wood ash reduces formaldehyde in air from about 20 to <1 ppmv. Methanol is removed to a much lower extent. The efficiency of formaldehyde reduction increases with increasing moisture content of the ash. Sorption of formaldehyde to ash can be substantially accounted for by partitioning to the water contained in the ash followed by rate-controlling binding to the ash solids. Adsorption occurs at temperatures of up to 165 degrees C; oxidation predominates thereafter. It is proposed that formaldehyde could be stripped from an air stream in a fluidized bed containing ash, which could then be returned to a boiler to incinerate the formaldehyde.

7. Characterization of the enhancement effect of Na2CO3 on the sulfur capture capacity of limestones.

Abstract

It has been known for a long time that certain additives (e.g., NaCl, CaCl2, Na2CO3, Fe2O3) can increase the sulfur dioxide capture-capacity of limestones. In a recent study we demonstrated that very small amounts of Na2CO3 can be very beneficial for producing sorbents of very high sorption capacities. This paper explores what contributes to these significant increases. Mercury porosimetry measurements of calcined limestone samples reveal a change in the pore-size from 0.04-0.2 microm in untreated samples to 2-10 microm in samples treated with Na2CO3--a pore-size more favorable for penetration of sulfur into the particles. The change in pore-size facilitates reaction with lime grains throughout the whole particle without rapid plugging of pores, avoiding premature change from a fast chemical reaction to a slow solid-state diffusion controlled process, as seen for untreated samples. Calcination in a thermogravimetric reactor showed that Na2CO3 increased the rate of calcination of CaCO3 to CaO, an effect which was slightly larger at 825 degrees C than at 900 degrees C. Peak broadening analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data of the raw, calcined, and sulfated samples revealed an unaffected calcite size (approximately 125-170 nm) but a significant increase in the crystallite size for lime (approximately 60-90 nm to approximately 250-300 nm) and less for anhydrite (approximately 125-150 nm to approximately 225-250 nm). The increase in the crystallite and pore-size of the treated limestones is attributed to an increase in ionic mobility in the crystal lattice due to formation of vacancies in the crystals when Ca is partly replaced by Na.

Abstract

Co-firing of coal and paper mill sludge was conducted in a 103 MWth circulating fluidized bed boiler to investigate the effect of the sludge feeding rate on emissions of SOx, NOx, and CO. The preliminary results show that emissions of SOx and Nx decrease with increasing sludge feeding rate, but CO shows the reverse tendency due to the decrease in combustion temperature caused by a large amount of moisture in the sludge. All emissions met the local environmental requirements. The combustion ashes could be recycled as feed materials in the cement manufacturing process.

Abstract

Udgivelsesdato: 2008-Feb-14 In contrast to some extensively examined food mutagens, for example, aflatoxins, N-nitrosamines and heterocyclic amines, some other food contaminants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and other aromatic compounds, have received less attention. Therefore, exploring the relationships between dietary habits and the levels of biomarkers related to exposure to aromatic compounds is highly relevant. We have investigated in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) cohort the association between dietary items (food groups and nutrients) and aromatic DNA adducts and 4-aminobiphenyl-Hb adducts. Both types of adducts are biomarkers of carcinogen exposure and possibly of cancer risk, and were measured, respectively, in leucocytes and erythrocytes of 1086 (DNA adducts) and 190 (Hb adducts) non-smokers. An inverse, statistically significant, association has been found between DNA adduct levels and dietary fibre intake (P = 0.02), vitamin E (P = 0.04) and alcohol (P = 0.03) but not with other nutrients or food groups. Also, an inverse association between fibre and fruit intake, and BMI and 4-aminobiphenyl-Hb adducts (P = 0.03, 0.04, and 0.03 respectively) was observed. After multivariate regression analysis these inverse correlations remained statistically significant, except for the correlation adducts v. fruit intake. The present study suggests that fibre intake in the usual range can modify the level of DNA or Hb aromatic adducts, but such role seems to be quantitatively modest. Fibres could reduce the formation of DNA adducts in different manners, by diluting potential food mutagens and carcinogens in the gastrointestinal tract, by speeding their transit through the colon and by binding carcinogenic substances.

Abstract

[EN]Background: The urban environment may influence neurodevelopment from conception onwards, but there is no evaluation of the impact of multiple groups of exposures simultaneously. We investigated the association between early-life urban environment and cognitive and motor function in children. Methods: We used data from 5403 mother-child pairs from four population-based birth-cohorts (UK, France, Spain, and Greece). We estimated thirteen urban home exposures during pregnancy and childhood, including: built environment, natural spaces, and air pollution. Verbal, non-verbal, gross motor, and fine motor functions were assessed using validated tests at five years old. We ran adjusted multi-exposure models using the Deletion-Substitution-Addition algorithm. Results: Higher greenness exposure within 300 m during pregnancy was associated with higher verbal abilities (1.5 points (95% confidence interval 0.4, 2.7) per 0.20 unit increase in greenness). Higher connectivity density within 100 m and land use diversity during pregnancy were related to lower verbal abilities. Childhood exposure to PM2.5 mediated 74% of the association between greenness during childhood and verbal abilities. Higher exposure to PM2.5 during pregnancy was related to lower fine motor function (-1.2 points (-2.1, -0.4) per 3.2 mu g/m3 increase in PM2.5). No associations were found with non-verbal abilities and gross motor function. Discussion: This study suggests that built environment, greenness, and air pollution may impact child cognitive and motor function at five years old. This study adds evidence that well-designed urban planning may benefit children's cognitive and motor development.
