Metaheuristic optimization algorithms (MHA) play a significant role in obtaining the best (optimal) values of the system's parameters to improve its performance. This role is significantly apparent when dealing with systems where the classical analytical methods fail. Fractional-order (FO) systems have not yet shown an easy procedure to deal with the determination of their optimal parameters through traditional methods. In this paper, a recent, systematic. And comprehensive review is presented to highlight the role of MHA in obtaining the best set of gains and orders for FO controllers. The systematic review starts by exploring the most relevant publications related to the MHA and the FO controllers. The study is focused on the most popular controllers such as the FO-PI, FO-PID, FO Type-1 fuzzy-PID, and FO Type-2 fuzzy-PID. The time domain is restricted in the articles published through the last decade (2014:2023) in the most reputed databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. The identified number of papers, from the entire databases, has reached 850 articles. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology was applied to the initial set of articles to be screened and filtered to end up with a final list that contains 82 articles. Then, a thorough and comprehensive study was applied to the final list. The results showed that Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is the most attractive optimizer to the researchers to be used in the optimal parameters identification of the FO controllers as it attains about 25% of the published papers. In addition, the papers that used PSO as an optimizer have gained a high citation number despite the fact that the Chaotic Atom Search Optimization (ChASO) is the highest one, but it is used only once. Furthermore, the Integral of the Time-Weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) is the best nominated cost function. Based on our comprehensive literature review, this appears to be the first review paper that systematically and comprehensively addresses the optimization of the parameters of the fractional-order PI, PID, Type-1, and Type-2 fuzzy controllers with the use of MHAs. This paper presents a powerful swarm intelligence metaheuristic optimization algorithm called Dynamic Cat Swarm Optimization. The formulation is through modifying the existing Cat Swarm Optimization Algorithm. The original Cat Swarm Optimization suffers from the shortcoming of "premature convergence," which is the possibility of entrapment in local optima which usually happens due to the off balance between exploration and exploitation phases. Therefore, the proposed algorithm suggests a new method to provide a proper balance between these phases by modifying the selection scheme and the seeking mode of the algorithm. To evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 classical test functions, 10 modern test functions (CEC 2019) and a real-world scenario are used. In addition, the dimension-wise diversity metric is used to measure the percentage of the exploration and exploitation phases. The optimization results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, which ranks first compared to several well-known algorithms available in the literature. Furthermore, statistical methods and graphs are also used to further confirm the outperformance of the algorithm. This paper considers the no-wait job shop (NWJS) problem with makespan minimisation criteria. It is well known that this problem is strongly NP-hard. Most of the previous studies decompose the problem into a timetabling sub-problem and a sequencing sub-problem. Each study proposes a different sequencing and timetabling algorithm to solve the problem. In this research, this important question is aimed to be answered: is the timetabling or the sequencing algorithm more important to the effectiveness of the developed algorithm? In order to find the answer, three different sequencing algorithms are developed; a tabu search (TS), a hybrid of tabu search with variable neighbourhood search (TSVNS), and a hybrid of tabu search with particle swarm optimisation (TSPSO). Afterwards, the sequencing algorithms are combined with four different timetabling methods. All the approaches are applied to a large number of test problems available in the literature. Statistical analysis reveals that although some of the sequencing and timetabling algorithms are more complicated than the others, they are not necessarily superior to simpler algorithms. In this paper, we consider the contention aware task scheduling problem on a grid topology of processors. By contention awareness, we mean that simultaneous communication on a link has to be serialized. To solve this problem, we propose several nature inspired metaheuristic algorithms: Simulated Annealing (SA), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Differential Evolution (DE), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bat Algorithm (BA), Cuckoo Search (CS), and Firefly Algorithm (FA). We perform benchmark evaluation of these algorithms for the Normalized Schedule Length (NSL) parameter. The benchmark task graphs that we consider are: random task graphs, peer set task graphs, systolic array task graphs, Gaussian elimination task graphs, divide and conquer task graphs, and fast Fourier transform task graphs. This paper proposes a novel population based optimization algorithm called Andean Condor Algorithm (ACA) for solving cell formation problems. The ACA metaheuristic is inspired by the movement pattern of the Andean Condor when it searches for food. This pattern of movement corresponds to the flight distance traveled by the Andean Condor from its nest to the place where food is found. This distance varies depending on the seasons of the year. The ACA metaheuristic presents a balance of its population through a performance indicator based on the average quality of the population's fitness. This balance determines the number of Andean Condors that will perform an exploration or intensification movements. ACA metaheuristics have a flexible design. It allows to easily integrate specific heuristics according to the optimization problem to be solved. Two types of computational experiments have been performed. According to the results obtained it has been possible to determine that ACA is an algorithm with an outstanding RPD% in relation to the algorithms BAT, MBO and PSO, robust and with a convergence which tends not to be trapped in the local optimums. Besides, according to the non-parametric multiple comparison, results have been obtained in which the ACA metaheuristic has significant differences in relation to the BAT, MBO and PSO algorithms. In the optimization field, the ability to efficiently tackle complex and high-dimensional problems remains a persistent challenge. Metaheuristic algorithms, with a particular emphasis on their autonomous variants, are emerging as promising tools to overcome this challenge. The term "autonomous" refers to these variants' ability to dynamically adjust certain parameters based on their own outcomes, without external intervention. The objective is to leverage the advantages and characteristics of an unsupervised machine learning clustering technique to configure the population parameter with autonomous behavior, and emphasize how we incorporate the characteristics of search space clustering to enhance the intensification and diversification of the metaheuristic. This allows dynamic adjustments based on its own outcomes, whether by increasing or decreasing the population in response to the need for diversification or intensification of solutions. In this manner, it aims to imbue the metaheuristic with features for a broader search of solutions that can yield superior results. This study provides an in-depth examination of autonomous metaheuristic algorithms, including Autonomous Particle Swarm Optimization, Autonomous Cuckoo Search Algorithm, and Autonomous Bat Algorithm. We submit these algorithms to a thorough evaluation against their original counterparts using high-density functions from the well-known CEC LSGO benchmark suite. Quantitative results revealed performance enhancements in the autonomous versions, with Autonomous Particle Swarm Optimization consistently outperforming its peers in achieving optimal minimum values. Autonomous Cuckoo Search Algorithm and Autonomous Bat Algorithm also demonstrated noteworthy advancements over their traditional counterparts. A salient feature of these algorithms is the continuous nature of their population, which significantly bolsters their capability to navigate complex and high-dimensional search spaces. However, like all methodologies, there were challenges in ensuring consistent performance across all test scenarios. The intrinsic adaptability and autonomous decision making embedded within these algorithms herald a new era of optimization tools suited for complex real-world challenges. In sum, this research accentuates the potential of autonomous metaheuristics in the optimization arena, laying the groundwork for their expanded application across diverse challenges and domains. The strong demand on human mobility leads to excessive numbers of cars and raises the problems of serious traffic congestion, large amounts of greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and insufficient parking space in cities. Although ridesharing is a potential transport mode to solve the above problems through car-sharing, it is still not widely adopted. Most studies consider non-monetary incentive performance indices such as travel distance and successful matches in ridesharing systems. These performance indices fail to provide a strong incentive for ridesharing. The goal of this paper is to address this issue by proposing a monetary incentive performance indicator to improve the incentives for ridesharing. The objectives are to improve the incentive for ridesharing through a monetary incentive optimization problem formulation, development of a solution methodology and comparison of different solution algorithms. A non-linear integer programming optimization problem is formulated to optimize monetary incentive in ridesharing systems. Several discrete metaheuristic algorithms are developed to cope with computational complexity for solving the above problem. These include several discrete variants of particle swarm optimization algorithms, differential evolution algorithms and the firefly algorithm. Sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is a recently developed and widely used metaheuristic to perform global optimization tasks. Due to its simplicity in structure and reasonable performance, it has been utilized to solve several real-world applications. This paper proposes an alternate version of the SCA by adopting the greedy approach of search, crossover and exponentially decreased transition control parameter to overcome the issues of low exploitation, insufficient diversity and premature convergence. The proposed algorithm, called ECr-SCA, is validated and compared with the original SCA using computational time, diversity, performance index, statistical and convergence analysis on a set of 23 standard benchmark problems. Later, the proposed ECr-SCA is compared with seventeen other algorithms including improved versions of the SCA and state-of-the-art algorithms. Furthermore, the ECr-SCA is used to train multi-layer perceptron and the results are compared with variants of SCA and other metaheuristics. Swarm algorithms belong to the class of population metaheuristic optimization methods. Despite the use of various metaphors, most swarm algorithms have similar structures, where one can distinguish common components such as the decision population initialization, decision diversification, and decision intensification. Based on the concept of generality, an analysis of key approaches to, methods for, and ways of increasing the efficiency of swarm optimization algorithms was carried out. In the survey, swarm optimization algorithms are viewed as a set of operators without a detailed discussion of each algorithm. The main focus is on the analysis of the key components of the algorithms. The main idea behind efficiency improvement is to maintain a balance between diversification and intensification. In this context, we consider mechanisms for supporting population diversity, methods for tuning and adjusting the swarm algorithm parameters, and approaches to hybridization of algorithms. Currently, industry is undergoing an exponential increase in binary-based combinatorial problems. In this regard, metaheuristics have been a common trend in the field in order to design approaches to successfully solve them. Thus, a well-known strategy includes the employment of continuous swarm-based algorithms transformed to perform in binary environments. In this work, we propose a hybrid approach that contains discrete smartly adapted population-based strategies to efficiently tackle binary-based problems. The proposed approach employs a reinforcement learning technique, known as SARSA (State–Action–Reward–State–Action), in order to utilize knowledge based on the run time. In order to test the viability and competitiveness of our proposal, we compare discrete state-of-the-art algorithms smartly assisted by SARSA. Finally, we illustrate interesting results where the proposed hybrid outperforms other approaches, thus, providing a novel option to tackle these types of problems in industry. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
