Bacterial communities in epilithic biofilm plays an important role in biogeochemistry processes in freshwater ecosystems. Nevertheless, our understanding of the geographical and seasonal variations of the composition of bacterial communities in the biofilm of gravels on river bed is still limited. Various anthropogenic activities also influence the biofilm bacteria in gravel rivers. By taking the Shiting River in the upper Yangtze River basin in Sichuan Province as an example, we studied the geographical and seasonal variations of epilithic bacteria and the impacts of weirs and other human activities (e.g., sewage pollution). The river has experienced severe degradation since the Ms 8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake, and weirs were constructed to prevent bed erosion. We collected epilithic biofilms samples at 17 sites along ~ 30 km river reach of the Shiting River in the autumn of 2021 and the summer of 2022, respectively. We applied 16S rRNA gene high-throughput sequencing technology and Functional Annotation of Prokaryotic Taxa (FAPROTAX) to analyze the seasonal and biogeographic patterns and potential functions of the biofilm bacterial communities. The results showed that epilithic bacteria from the two surveys exhibited variation in community composition, bacterial diversity and potential functions. The bacteria samples collected in the autumn have much higher alpha diversity and richness than those collected in the summer. Bacterial richness and diversity were lower downstream of the weirs than upstream. Glaciers across the Kashmir Himalayan region are melting at an accelerated pace compared to other regions across the Himalayan arc. This study analyzed the recession patterns of nine glaciers in the Kashmir Himalaya region over 28 years between 1992 and 2020 using satellite images and field measurements. The recession patterns were correlated with debris cover, topographic factors, and ambient black carbon (BC) concentration at glacier sites. HYSPLIT model was used to track the air mass sources at a 7-day time-step from September 1, 2014, to September 28, 2014, over the selected region. All nine glaciers revealed high recession as indicated by changes in the area (average recession: 20.8%) and snout position (~ 14 m a -1 ). The relative percentage of debris on each glacier varied between ~ 0% (clean glacier) and 43%. Although the investigated glaciers lie in the same climatological regime, their topographical behavior is dissimilar with mean altitude ranging between 4000 and ~ 4700 m asl and the average slope varying from 17 to 24°. All the investigated glaciers are north-facing except G3 (southerly aspect). Our results indicate anomalously high ambient BC concentrations, ranging from 500 to 1364 ng m -3 , at the glacier sites, higher than previously studied for glaciers in the Himalayas and neighboring Tibetan Plateau. The backward air-mass trajectory modeling indicated both local and global sources of particulate matter in the study area. Effective conservation requires understanding the processes that determine population outcomes. Too often, we assume that protected areas conserve wild populations despite evidence that they frequently fail to do so. Without large-scale studies, however, we cannot determine what relationships are the product of localized conditions versus general patterns that inform conservation more broadly. Leopards' (Panthera pardus) basic ecology is well studied but little research has investigated anthropogenic effects on leopard density at broad scales. We investigated the drivers of leopard density among 27 diverse protected areas in northeastern South Africa to understand what conditions facilitate abundant populations. We formulated 10 working hypotheses that considered the relative influence of bottom-up biological factors and top-down anthropogenic factors on leopard density. Using camera-trap survey data, we fit a multi-session spatial capture-recapture model with inhomogenous density for each hypothesis and evaluated support using an information theoretic approach. The four supported hypotheses indicated that leopard density is primarily limited by human impacts, but that habitat suitability and management conditions also matter. The proportion of camera stations that recorded domestic animals, a proxy for the extent of human impacts and protected area effectiveness, was the only predictor variable present in all four supported models. Protected areas are the cornerstone of large felid conservation, but only when the human-wildlife interface is well managed and protected areas shelter wildlife populations from anthropogenic impacts. Çarşamba aquifer is one of the most important coastal aquifers in Turkey. This aquifer is confronted by overexploitation due to the agricultural and industrial activities. The aim of the present study is to investigate the seasonal variations of hydrogeochemical parameters and to assess the suitability for drinking and irrigation of groundwater in the coastal aquifer of Çarşamba plain. For this purpose, in July and December of the year 2019, 33 and 30 groundwater samples respectively were taken from boreholes in the study area and for these samples, EC, pH, TDS, Na + , Ca + , K + , Mg 2+ , CO 3 - , HCO 3 - , Cl - , SO 4 2- , NH 4 + , NO 3 - , and NO 2 - values were determined. Strong correlation was observed between Cl - and Na + during both seasons indicating the seawater intrusion on groundwater in the study area. Principal component analysis showed that in the study area, seawater intrusion, rock-water interaction, and anthropogenic activities from agricultural areas are the main factors that impact the groundwater chemistry. Seawater intrusion is the most important factor which affects the groundwater chemistry in July while in December, the main factor is rock-water interaction. In December, NO 2 - and NH 4 + values of most water samples exceed the authorized limits of Turkish Standard and WHO. Water quality index indicated that most of the water samples are suitable for drinking. Wilcox diagram and US salinity diagram used to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for irrigation suggested that in July, 87.87% (90% in December) (for Wilcox diagram) and 96.96% (100% in December) (for US salinity diagram) of the water samples belonged to the good to permissible class, and therefore are suitable for irrigation purpose. In addition, the EC, %Na, TH, RSC, SAR, PI, KI, and MH values of samples showed that during both seasons, most of the water samples are suitable for irrigation. However, in July, 51.52% (43.43% in December) of samples have extremely high potential salinity values, thus revealing the unsuitability of most groundwater samples for irrigation in the study area., (© 2022. Inefficient management of protected areas (PAs) is often due to ignoring their surrounding matrix in the baseline studies, especially in wooded landscapes. In Iran, the application of landscape structure studies in protection policies and PA management is not prevalent. In this study, land cover changes in Dena Rural District (including parts of inside and outside Dena PA) have analyzed using the process of the Landsat images along with field survey two times (1989 and 2018). The landscape structural integrity was quantified based on the situation of oak forest land and its alteration. The composition and the configuration of oak forest land were assessed by metrics based on the moving extent of the Persian squirrel, Sciurus anomalus (which is an endangered focal endemic species completely dependent on the oak forest). Alterations of landscape structural integrity were compared for inside and outside Dena PA and at different altitudes. The results show connectivity loss and increased fragmentation of oak remnant patches, but this deforestation is more severe near areas facing direct human impacts and interventions. These are among attributes that are to be considered for zoning PA (such as controlling zone and training/participation zone). Ecological communities face a variety of environmental and anthropogenic stressors acting simultaneously. Stressor impacts can combine additively or can interact, causing synergistic or antagonistic effects. Our knowledge of when and how interactions arise is limited, as most models and experiments only consider the effect of a small number of non-interacting stressors at one or few scales of ecological organization. This is concerning because it could lead to significant underestimations or overestimations of threats to biodiversity. Furthermore, stressors have been largely classified by their source rather than by the mechanisms and ecological scales at which they act (the target). Here, we argue, first, that a more nuanced classification of stressors by target and ecological scale can generate valuable new insights and hypotheses about stressor interactions. Second, that the predictability of multiple stressor effects, and consistent patterns in their impacts, can be evaluated by examining the distribution of stressor effects across targets and ecological scales. Increasing socioecological systems (SESs) sustainability requires establishing a reasonable cross-regional social and ecological interaction. In this study, we examine how cross-regional ecological and social interactions affect synergistic effects. Using InVEST and correlation analysis with data from 2010 through 2020, we assessed ESs (i.e., water retention-WR, nutrient retention-NR, and carbon storage-CS) in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. A small watershed, a river network, and settlement development capacity are used to delineate ecological and social interactions units. Based on a Bayesian network model that considers population, economy, and spatial agglomeration patterns between social units, we assessed the potential for achieving a synergistic improvement of ESs and the driving forces behind them. The results show that ESs in the BTH region compete, only a small percentage (6.38%) shows synergetic improvement across CS, WR, and NR. It is beneficial for upstream watersheds to retain water and nutrients, but to maintain carbon storage they may sacrifice water retention. Upstream areas with less development and higher vegetation density have better ecosystem integrity of up- and down-stream watersheds, and can be enhanced with minimal human impact, as social interactions and settlement spatial structures influence ES synergies. This investigation analyzed shoreline evolution along India's Digha Coast from 1992 to 2022, using multispectral Landsat satellite images and the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS). Methods included identifying zones and transects, shoreline extraction, and applying spatial statistical techniques. The study area, divided into five zones with 587 transects, enabled both short- and long-term analysis. Key findings indicate that the mean long-term rate of shoreline change is -0.54 m per year, with 70.70 % of transects experiencing erosion and 29.30 % accretion. Notably, Zone V had the highest accretion rate (8.55 m/year), while Zone III faced the most erosion (-7.47 m/year). Short-term analysis from 1997 to 2017 indicated significant erosion, contrasting with accretion during 1992-1997 and 2017-2022. Particularly, Zones II, III, and IV underwent major erosion, especially from 1997 to 2002. Among the world's most essential natural environmental resources are wetlands. In Iraq, the Mesopotamia marshes are considered as among the most significant swamplands worldwide. They are situated in the massive flood plains of the rivers Tigris and Euphrates in the lower basin of Mesopotamia. In this paper, there will be a thoughtful study of the effect of climate and microclimate change on these Marshes. The main sources of data and scientific knowledge will be gathered and summarized from almost all previous research conducted in the area. Most of the papers involved in this summarized study are those related to remote sensing, since remote sensing tends to be the most effective approach as it is less costly and consumes less time. Most of the reviewed papers that have studied the marshland circumstances of the area showed a deterioration in the level of the area's water bodies due to climate change. However, there are other factors that influence and degrade these marshlands other than the effects of climate change. These extra factors are represented by the political and military actions conducted by the previous Iraq regime during the middle of the 1980s. According to most of the most research implemented in the area, the water system in Iraq is experiencing significant challenges, thus increasing concerns about the Mesopotamian marshes that have been sustaining the region for thousands of years and which may possibly vanish soon. Southeast Asia is renowned for its rich biodiversity and serves as a global hotspot for organisms. Satun Province, located in southern Thailand, represents a significant biogeographic and biodiversity region situated in the transition zone between the Indochinese and Sundaland hotspots. Thus, Satun Province has high diversity and abundance of organisms, especially land snails. However, Satun Province has been largely understudied for both diversity and biogeography. Our study aimed to investigate land snail communities, emphasizing comparisons between the mainland and island sites, and the influence of limestone and other rock types in Satun Province. Our exploration efforts identified a diverse land snail community comprising 17 families, which updated the total reported species in the province from 22 to 58 species. The results showed that islands had significantly greater land snail species richness and abundance, and larger Shannon index values in comparison to the mainland. Anthropogenic activities on the mainland led to habitat transformation and had detrimental impacts on native land snail diversity while promoting the spread of invasive species. In contrast, the presence of little-disturbed limestone habitats on some of the islands contributed to higher richness of land snails, as limestone areas are known for their high diversity and endemism. Snail communities varied along site characteristics; especially, limestone versus non-limestone areas and human activity levels (which were associated with national park protection), with limestone and protected areas having the highest diversity. Our study illustrates the value of protected areas as potential hotspots of biodiversity, especially for islands that are little disturbed by human activities and that have habitats that support high diversity, such as limestone outcrops. Quantifying anthropogenic impacts on blue space (BS) and its effect on human and socio-ecological health was least explored. The present study aimed to do this in reference to the urban BS transformation scenario of Eastern India. To measure BS transformation, Landsat image-based water indices were run from 1990 to 2021. Anthropogenic impact score (AIS) and 7 components scores of 78 selected BS on 70 parameters related data driven from the field. Total 345 respondents were taken for human and socio-ecological health assessment. For this, depression (DEP), anxiety (ANX), stress (STR), physical activities (PA), social capital (SC), therapeutic landscape (TL) and environment building (EB) parameters were taken. The result exhibited that BS was reduced. About 50% of urban core BS was reported highly impacted. Human and socio-ecological health was identified as good in proximity to BS, but it was observed better in the cases of larger peripheral BS. AIS on BS was found to be positively associated with mental health (0.47-0.63) and negatively associated with PA, SC, TL and EB (-0.50 to -0.90). Standard residual in ordinary least square was reported low (-1.5 to 1.5) in 95% BS. Climate and anthropogenic stressors are frequent in coastal systems, affecting biological communities in different intensities and directions. When acting synergistically, their effects may be intensified. ENSO strongly affects the climate globally, being responsible for increased rainfall in the Atlantic Southwestern during El Niño and droughts during La Niña phases. Contrasting, human-made breakwaters have static influence in decreasing estuarine salinity. Using a 23-year of fish abundance dataset, we identified that intense El Niño events and breakwater extension decreased the marine fish abundance, with potential additive synergistic effects, whereas La Niña showed no influence. Species composition changes were observed after the breakwater extension, probably related to opportunistic habits of euryhaline species. Oilfield produced water, a toxic and saline byproduct of the oil and gas industry, has become a global concern due to its adverse environmental and human health impacts. With large volumes of oilfiled produced water generated annually and predictions of even higher volumes in the near future, effective treatment and resource recovery are imperative. This review paper explores the potential of membrane technology, particularly integrated membrane systems, in treating and recovering valuable elements from oilfield produced water. The increasing attention to this topic is evident, but research on resource recovery still needs to be expanded. Membrane technology offers a promising solution due to its efficiency and minimal need for chemical additives or thermal inputs. However, challenges such as fouling, resistance to oil and organics, and economic viability must be addressed. By discussing oilfield produced water characteristics, treatment methods, practical applications, challenges, and prospects, this review underscores the transformative role of membrane technology in turning oilfield produced water into a valuable resource. With growing concerns regarding the ecological and human risks of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in water, much effort has been devoted worldwide to establishing quality standards and compiling candidate and watch lists. Although bank filtration is recognized as an efficient natural water treatment in the removal of contaminants such as OMPs, the increase in exploitation requires continuous assessment of removal efficiency. This review aims to provide a critical overview of bank filtration (BF) reports on more than a hundred priority substances (PSs) and compounds of emerging concern (CECs) listed in the relevant European Union regulations. Field- and lab-scale studies analyzing the removal efficiency and its variance of individual OMPs and biological indicators using BF and the main influencing factors and their interactions, shortcomings, and future challenges are discussed in this review. The removal efficiency of EU-relevant contaminants by BF has been comprehensively investigated for only a few pollutants listed in the environmental EU regulations: pharmaceutically active compounds, (e.g., the anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac, some antibiotics (e.g., sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim)), a few pesticides (e.g., atrazine), and faecal indicators such as Escherichia coli. In many cases, the measured concentrations of PSs and CECs have not been published numerically, which hinders comprehensive statistical analysis. Although BF is one of the most cost-effective and efficient water treatments, present field and lab studies have demonstrated the diversity of site-specific factors affecting its efficiency. Even in the case of substances known to be removed by BF, the efficiency rates can vary with environmental and anthropogenic factors (e.g., hydrogeological parameters and the contamination level of infiltrating water) and abstraction well parameters (e.g., the depth, distance, and pumping volume). The rapid, human-induced changes in the Earth system during the Anthropocene present humanity with critical sustainability challenges. Social-ecological systems (SES) research provides multiple approaches for understanding the complex interactions between humans, social systems, and environments and how we might direct them towards healthier and more resilient futures. However, general theories of SES change have yet to be fully developed. Formal evolutionary theory has been applied as a dynamic theory of change of complex phenomena in biology and the social sciences, but rarely in SES research. In this paper, we explore the connections between both fields, hoping to foster collaboration. After sketching out the distinct intellectual traditions of SES research and evolutionary theory, we map some of their terminological and theoretical connections. We then provide examples of how evolutionary theory might be incorporated into SES research through the use of systems mapping to identify evolutionary processes in SES, the application of concepts from evolutionary developmental biology to understand the connections between systems changes and evolutionary changes, and how evolutionary thinking may help design interventions for beneficial change. Integrating evolutionary theory and SES research can lead to a better understanding of SES changes and positive interventions for a more sustainable Anthropocene. The amount of nitrogen stored in terrestrial soils, its "nitrogen pool", moderates biogeochemical cycling affecting primary productivity, nitrogen pollution and even carbon budgets. The soil nitrogen pools and the transformation of nitrogen forms within them are heavily influenced by environmental factors including anthropogenic activities. However, our understanding of the global distribution of soil nitrogen with respect to anthropogenic activity and human land use remains unclear. We constructed a meta-analysis from a global sampling, in which we compare soil total nitrogen pools and the driving mechanisms affecting each pool across three major classifications of human land use: natural, agricultural, and urban. Although the size of the nitrogen pool can be similar across natural, agricultural and urban soils, the ecological and human associated drivers vary. Specifically, the drivers within agricultural and urban soils as opposed to natural soils are more complex and often decoupled from climatic and soil factors. This suggests that the nitrogen pools of those soils may be co-moderated by other factors not included in our analyses, like human activities. Lake sediments can provide valuable insights into anthropogenic disturbances such as intensive aquaculture and land use changes. These disturbances often manifest as elevated levels of nutrients and elements within the sediments. This paper uses several analytical techniques, i.e., FTIR (Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), EDS (energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), and SEM (scanning electron microscopy), to examine the elemental constituents of lake sediments, along with their relative mineral abundances and surface morphology. The selected freshwater lakes are from the Central Gangetic Plain. The analysis provides a "fingerprint" of geogenic and biogenic mineral constituents of the sediments. Physicochemical, mineralogical, and elemental analysis shows that intensive aquaculture activities in lake alter the sediment chemistry as evidenced by the increase in pH, organic carbon, organic matter, and total phosphorus which is not observed in the lake where aquaculture is prohibited. Freshwater lake sediment is characterized by a high content of biogenic silica and carbonate minerals. The variations in sediment nutrients and mineral fluxes of the selected lakes are mainly attributed to diverse anthropogenic pressures, differences in lake productivity, and the overall ecological condition of the lakes. In the selected three lakes, major variation was reported in the autochthonous sediments in comparison to the allochthonous sediments. The study concludes that catchment and biotic deposit variations in the lakes cannot be evened out by in-lake mixing mechanisms due to variations in the terrigenous and pelagic deposits of the lake. The results highlight the importance of studying annual fluctuations and spatial variations in geogenic and biogenic mineral particle fluxes in lakes. Biological invasion poses a major threat to biodiversity and conservation efforts in protected areas. The Greater Shennongjia Area (GSA) is one of China's 16 key areas for biodiversity, as stated in the China National Biodiversity Conservation Strategy and Action Plan. However, the local authorities lack appropriate data on the extent and impact of exotic species in protected areas, as well as lack the capacity and motivation to properly plan for exotic species strategy and action plan to support both prevention, control as well as management of exotic plants in their jurisdiction. In addition, while most previous studies have focused on exotic species in protected areas, little effort has been devoted to specifying which environmental factors contribute to the difference between protected and non-protected areas. Here, we explored the current distribution pattern of the richness and abundance of exotic species in relation to environmental variables within the GSA. In total, we found 84 exotic plant species, of which 41 exotic species within the protected areas, in 64 genera and 27 families, predominately from Asteraceae, Fabaceae, and Poaceae. The generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) revealed that the protection status and the distance to human settlements were the most important predictors of exotic plant richness and abundance in the GSA. Our results showed that the average exotic plant richness and coverage in the protected areas were 22% and 31% lower than outside the protected areas, respectively. Such differences were probably the result of anthropogenic activities (e.g., proximity to human settlements and the proportion of cropland). Although protected areas provide an important barrier against plant invasions, invasion may be a tricky issue for protected area management in the future. The Alliance of Protected areas in Western Hubei and Eastern Chongqing will need to further consider stringent control and management strategies for the entry of exotic species into protected areas to effectively maintain the continuity and integrity of the GSA's biodiversity and ecosystems. Legacy phosphorus (P) in watersheds continuously affects the water quality. The time lag between anthropogenic P input and algal bloom has made P dynamics prediction in aquatic ecosystems more challenging. Whether the legacy P in the Yangtze River Watershed (YRW) exceeds its storage threshold remains unknown, and the continuous impact of legacy P on the water quality has not been analyzed. This study aimed to evaluate variation trends (1970-2018) and influencing factors for accumulated P in the YRW under different economic development periods, quantitatively identify the watershed P storage threshold based on the two split line models and estimate the time required for the return of legacy P to the baseline level using an exponential decay process. The results showed that the P storage threshold of the YRW was surpassed due to intense anthropogenic activities, and the residual P still had an impact on aquatic ecosystems for a long time. The dissolved total P loadings may become the top priority to achieve better P management goals. The time lags for the legacy P restoration would require for about 1000 years to be exhausted. The legacy P in the YRW would continuously undermine the restoration efforts of the water quality. The combined effects of watershed P surplus reductions and depletion of residual P may become essential to better manage P in the future. Baseflow is pivotal in maintaining catchment ecological health and improving sustainable economic development. The Yellow River Basin (YRB) is northern China's most important water supplier. However, it faces water shortage due to synergistic effects between natural conditions and anthropogenic activities. Investigating baseflow characteristics quantitively is, therefore, beneficial to promoting the sustainable development of the YRB. In this study, daily ensemble means baseflow data derived from four revised baseflow separation algorithms (i.e., the United Kingdom Institute of Hydrology (UKIH), Lyne-Hollick, Chapman-Maxwell, and Eckhardt methods) - was obtained from 2001 to 2020. Thirteen baseflow dynamics signatures were extracted to investigate baseflow spatiotemporal variations and their determinants across the YRB. The main findings were: (1) There were significant spatial distribution patterns of baseflow signatures, and most signatures had higher values in upstream and downstream reaches than in the middle reaches. There were also mixing patterns with higher values in middle and downstream reaches simultaneously. (2) The magnitude of temporal variation in baseflow signatures was most strongly correlated with catchment terrain (r = -0.4), vegetation growth (r > 0.3), and cropland coverage (r > 0.4). (3) There was a strong synergistic effect of multiple factors (e.g., soil textures, precipitation and vegetation conditions) on baseflow signature values. Over the past centuries, freshwater fish introductions and extinctions have been the major environmental and ecological crises in various water bodies in China. However, consequences of such crises on freshwater fish biodiversity in China remain only partially or locally studied. Furthermore, identifications of relatively sensitive areas along with stressors (i.e., environmental and anthropogenic drivers) influencing freshwater fish biodiversity patterns are still pending. Taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic facets of biodiversity can well describe and evaluate the underlying processes affecting freshwater fish biodiversity patterns under different dimensionalities. Here we thus evaluated temporal changes in these facets of freshwater fish biodiversity as well as a new developed biodiversity index, multifaceted changes in fish biodiversity, for over a century at the basin level throughout China using both alpha and beta diversity approaches. We also identified the drivers influencing the changes in fish biodiversity patterns using random forest models. The results showed that fish assemblages in Northwest and Southwest China (e.g., Ili River basin, Tarim basin, and Erhai Lake basin) experienced extreme temporal and multifaceted changes in the facets of biodiversity compared with other regions, and environmental factors (e.g., net primary productivity, average annual precipitation, and unit area) largely drove these changes. Monitoring soundscapes is essential for assessing environmental conditions for soniferous species, yet little is known about sound levels and contributors in Oregon coastal regions. From 2017 to 2021, during June-September, two hydrophones were deployed near Newport, Oregon to sample 10-13,000 Hz underwater sound. One hydrophone was deployed near the Port of Newport in a high vessel activity area, and another 17 km north within a protected Marine Reserve. Vessel noise and whale vocalizations were detected at both sites, but whales were recorded on more days at the Marine Reserve. Median sound levels in frequencies related to noise from various vessel types and sizes (50 - 4,000 Hz) were up to 6 dB higher at the Port of Newport, with greater diel variability compared to the Marine Reserve. Halophila stipulacea is a tropical seagrass species, native to the Red Sea, Persian Gulf, and Indian Ocean, while invasive to the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas. The benthic fauna assemblages associated with H. stipulacea in its native habitats and the potential effects of anthropogenic stressors on these assemblages remain unknown. We compared meadow characteristics, associated fauna assemblages and trophic niche structures of H. stipulacea from an impacted and a pristine site in the northern Red Sea. Seagrass cover and biomass were higher in the impacted site, however, the associated fauna community was more abundant and diverse in the pristine site. Both meadows showed comparable trophic niches based on stable isotope analysis. Bacteria present in the marine environment can cause ecological risks and seriously impact human health through direct contact or the food chain. This paper examines bacterial resistance to heavy metals and anthropogenic inputs' influence in four Bou-Ismail Bay regions (Algerian coast). The study was conducted from May to October 2018. High levels of resistance of total flora and total coliform were observed respectively for zinc (29.5 %, 30.5 %), copper (26.2 %, 20.7 %), mercury (17.4 %, 17.2 %), lead (16.9 %, 14.2 %), and cadmium (8.9 %, 0 %). A total 118 metal resistant bacteria were identified. All isolates were tested against 5 heavy metals and 7 antibiotics. The isolates showed tolerance to different concentrations of heavy metals ranging from 12.5 to 6400 μg/ml and exposed a co-resistance to the other heavy metals. The majority of strains were multi-resistant to heavy metals and antibiotics. The global marine ecosystem has been significantly altered by the combined effects of multiple anthropogenic impacts. Systematic planning of marine protected areas (MPAs) is of paramount importance in alleviating conflicts between humans and the sea. Existing approaches, however, merely integrate both ecological and anthropogenic factors for multiple conservation purposes. By combining the three main anthropogenic impact factors with two main ecological importance factors, this study used a GIS-based AHP-OWA method to identify different levels of priority protection for MPAs in Zhejiang, China. Our results proved that: 1) the multi-objective MPA siting issues can be addressed by the GIS-based AHP-OWA method through scenario simulation; 2) the best locations for MPAs are in the northeast, central, and southern marine areas of Zhejiang; 3) considering the trade-off degree, spatial conservation efficiency, and spatial heterogeneity, an optimized MPA siting scheme can be developed for decision-makers. Sediment organic carbon (SeOC) sources with rich information can be used as a "historical archive" reflecting anthropogenic activities in the catchment, which is crucial to carbon management in the watershed. Anthropogenic activities and hydrodynamic conditions significantly influence the river environment and are reflected by the SeOC sources. However, the key drivers of the SeOC source dynamics are ambiguous, which restricts the behavior of regulating the carbon output of the basin. In this study, sediment cores from the lower reach of an inland river were selected to quantify the SeOC sources based on a centennial scale. A partial least squares path model was used to establish the relationship between anthropogenic activities and hydrological conditions with the SeOC sources. Findings showed that the exogenous advantage of SeOC composition was gradually significant (early period: 54.3%; middle period: 81%; later period: 82%) from the bottom layer to the surface layer of the sediments in the lower reach of the Xiangjiang River. Factors related to anthropogenic activities controlled the external input of SeOC (δ 13 C: r ∂  = -0.94, P < 0.001; δ 15 N: r ∂  = -0.66, P < 0.001). Different anthropogenic activities performed different effects. Land use change aggravated soil erosion and brought more terrestrial organic carbon to the downstream. The variation of grassland carbon input was the most obvious (from 33.6% to 18.4%). In contrast, the reservoir construction intercepted upstream sediments, which might have been the main reason for the slow growth of terrestrial organic carbon input in the downstream in the later period. Anthropogenic activities drive tropical forest loss and biodiversity decay. However, few studies have addressed how the biodiversity response varies between disturbance-adapted species (i.e., winners) and those highly susceptible to disturbance (i.e., losers), or whether such responses differ between the taxonomic, functional, or phylogenetic dimensions of diversity. Understanding these dynamics can help prevent or buffer biotic homogenization processes. Using a meta-analytical approach with dung beetles as model organisms, we evaluated how anthropogenic habitat disturbances influence the multiple diversity dimensions of winner and loser species relative to conserved forest sites in the Neotropics. Habitats were organized according to a disturbance gradient ranging from second-growth forests, shaded agroforestry, lowly-shaded agroforestry, living fences, and pastures. Our database included 30 studies, from which we calculated nine metrics divided into three alfa diversity aspects: richness, evenness, and divergence. We also evaluated the beta-diversity response to disturbance and forest protection. All dimensions of dung beetle diversity decreased significantly with increasing disturbance levels, with phylogenetic diversity showing the highest losses, whereas evenness metrics increased in second-growth forests and agroforestry systems. Loser dung beetles showed high diversity loss as well as functional and phylogenetic clustering, reflecting a pervasive biotic homogenization in the most severely disturbed habitats, whereas winner species were insensitive to anthropogenic disturbances. Beta diversity increased significantly with disturbance and forest protection. Our study showed that heavy disturbances erode and homogenized all diversity dimensions of loser dung beetles. However, second-growth forests and agroforestry systems mitigated diversity loss and homogenization processes by favoring the coexistence between functional and phylogenetically distant species and maintaining assemblages compositionally similar to those in conserved forests, highlighting their importance for conservation. Substantial losses of the seagrass Posidonia oceanica have initiated investigations into localized resilience declines related to anthropogenic disturbances. In this study, we determined reconstructed shoot age and interannual growth metrics can detect anthropogenic impact effects on P. oceanica production. Interannual rhizome vertical growth, leaf production, and demographics of shoots collected from sewage and trawling impacted areas were examined using mixed effects modeling. Detected impact effects were specific to the type of impact, manifesting as an older-skewed age distribution of sewage outfall shoots and reduced vertical growth and reduced leaf production of trawling site shoots. A stress event period was also detected for all shoots >5 years old, with trawling impacted shoots indicating little recovery. Cumulative impacts increasingly threaten marine and coastal ecosystems. To address this issue, the research community has invested efforts on designing and testing different methodological approaches and tools that apply cumulative impact appraisal schemes for a sound evaluation of the complex interactions and dynamics among multiple pressures affecting marine and coastal ecosystems. Through an iterative scientometric and systematic literature review, this paper provides the state of the art of cumulative impact assessment approaches and applications. It gives a specific attention to cutting-edge approaches that explore and model inter-relations among climatic and anthropogenic pressures, vulnerability and resilience of marine and coastal ecosystems to these pressures, and the resulting changes in ecosystem services flow. Despite recent advances in computer sciences and the rising availability of big data for environmental monitoring and management, this literature review evidenced that the implementation of advanced complex system methods for cumulative risk assessment remains limited. Moreover, experts have only recently started integrating ecosystem services flow into cumulative impact appraisal frameworks, but more as a general assessment endpoint within the overall evaluation process (e.g. changes in the bundle of ecosystem services against cumulative impacts). The review also highlights a lack of integrated approaches and complex tools able to frame, explain, and model spatio-temporal dynamics of marine and coastal ecosystems' response to multiple pressures, as required under relevant EU legislation (e.g., Water Framework and Marine Strategy Framework Directives). Ecosystem services (ES) are the benefits natural ecosystems provide to society, such as food provisioning, water supply, climate regulation and recreational benefits. Biological invasions are a major driver of global change, and several non-indigenous species (NIS) may alter key ecological feedbacks with ultimate consequences to ES, livelihoods and human wellbeing. Nonetheless, the effects of NIS on ES supply remain largely unquantified. Here we present the first quantitative case study assessing the impacts of widespread NIS on ES in the Baltic Sea, by developing and employing a robust and repeatable data-driven approach. All NIS with a sufficient knowledge base pose large and highly significant effects on ES, resulting on average 55 % change in the intensity of ES. Most impacts affected regulation services, concerning both abiotic and biotic realms, with little evidence on cultural and provisioning services. The methodology can be easily employed beyond the current study realm e.g. to better understand the roles of human pressures on ES in any ecosystem. Panarchy, a model of dynamic systems change at multiple, interconnected spatiotemporal scales, allows assessing whether management influences ecological processes and resilience. We assessed whether liming, a management action to counteract anthropogenic acidification, influenced scale-specific temporal fluctuation frequencies of benthic invertebrates and phytoplankton assemblages in lakes. We also tested whether these fluctuations correlated with proxies of liming (Ca:Mg ratios) to quantify scale-specific management effects. Using an ecosystem experiment and monitoring data, time series analyses (1998-2019) revealed significant multiscale temporal (and thus panarchy) structure for littoral invertebrates across limed and reference lakes. Such patterns were inconsistent for sublittoral invertebrates and phytoplankton. When significant panarchy structure was found, Ca:Mg ratios correlated with only a few of the identified temporal fluctuation frequencies across limed and reference lakes. This suggests that liming effects become diluted in the managed lakes. The lack of manifestations of liming across the independent temporal fluctuation patterns suggest that this lake management form fails to create and enforce cross-scale interactions, a crucial component of ecological resilience. We assessed the anthropogenic impacts on southwestern Australian submarine canyons by quantifying macro-litter discovered during Remotely Operated Vehicle surveys. The study area encompasses the Bremer canyon systems and Perth Canyon. The categories of macro-litter identified by our study are plastic, metal, aluminium, glass, fabric, mixed, derelict fishing gear, and unclassified. The anthropogenic impacts in the canyons explored is minimal, especially in the Bremer canyon systems, whereas Perth Canyon has comparatively more macro-litter, presumably due to intense maritime traffic and nearby urban development. On a global scale, however, the environmental status of southwestern Australian canyons is relatively pristine. Afforestation has been initiated in Northeast Asia to improve ecological status. The responses of the regional hydrological cycle to vegetation restoration remain insufficiently explored. This study uses a variety of satellite-derived vegetation variables and hydrological cycle components to scan the eco-hydrological regimes in the Three-North Region of China and Mongolia during the past four decades. We observe that vegetation productivity increases mainly in North China (NC), Northeast China (NEC), Northwest China (NWC), and the north of Inner Mongolia and Mongolia. Precipitation and runoff show a decreasing trend (-0.4 mm/year and - 0.6 mm/year, respectively), yet they are less correlated to the normalized difference vegetation index and leaf area index. Along with increasing vegetation productivity, evapotranspiration increases (0.05 mm/year) obviously in NC and NEC, while root soil moisture (-0.001 m 3 /m 3 /year) and terrestrial water storage (-2.0 mm/year) decrease in NC and parts of NEC and NWC. The correlation coefficient between evapotranspiration and vegetation variables is up to 0.73. Collectively, results imply one potential adverse response of terrestrial water fluxes to increasing vegetation. Independent ecological and hydrological datasets further corroborate our work. Climatic factors (i.e., downward shortwave radiation and air temperature) and human activities (i.e., aerosol optical depth, carbon dioxide, and water withdrawal) substantially affect regional hydrological cycles. Considering the increasing vegetation productivity in the Three-North Region of China and Mongolia is likely to continue in the 21st century based on the Sixth Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) simulations, the terrestrial water fluxes may undergo deficit pressure. With the development of urbanization, ecological space is increasingly disturbed and invaded by human activities. From 2000 to 2020, the value of ecosystem services in China decreased from 28.05 to 27.77 trillion yuan. This paper combines the natural and social data of 370 administrative units in China from 2000 to 2020 with the GTWR model. Our results show that in most regions of China, the coefficient value of factor GDP or POP is significantly higher than that of other factors. The regions with higher natural factors coefficient value are concentrated in the northwest and southeast. In addition, this study found that the driving factors and ESV have geographical spillover effects. Tens of thousands of species are increasingly confronted with habitat degradation and threatened with local extirpation and global extinction as a result of human activities. Understanding the local processes that shape the regional distribution patterns of at-risk species is useful in safeguarding species against threats. However, there is only limited understanding of the processes that shape the regional distribution patterns of threatened species. We explored the drivers and patterns of species richness of threatened, non-threatened and total terrestrial mammals by employing multi-region multi-species occupancy models based on data from a broad camera trapping survey at 1096 stations stratified across different levels of human activities in 54 mountain forests in southwest China. We compared correlates between total and threatened species richness and examined relationships of human impact variables with the proportion of threatened species and the site's local contribution to β diversity (LCBD). We found that threatened species richness was negatively related to human modification and human presence. However, both non-threatened and total species richness increased as human modification increased. Predicted proportions of threatened species were strongly and positively related to LCBD but negatively related to human modification and human presence. Our results indicate that human impacts can lead to disproportionate loss of threatened terrestrial mammals and highlight the importance of considering threatened species diversity independently from total species richness for directing conservation resources. Six decades field observation data series on submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), water level and water quality from Lake Taihu were compiled to reveal the dynamics in coverage and species composition of SAV and their anthropogenic drivers. We found that both SAV species composition and coverage area declined significantly in Lake Taihu during the period, and the increasing nutrient levels and water level as well as decreasing water clarity were responsible for these change trends. Specifically, the decrease in species richness could be particularly well predicted by total nitrogen (TN) and the ratio of water clarity (i.e., Secchi disk depth (SDD)) to water level (WL), contributing 47.3 % and 32.3 %, respectively, while the coverage of macrophytes was most strongly related to the water level, accounting for 70.1 % of the variation. A classification tree analysis revealed a threshold of TN of 3.2 mg/L and SDD/WL of 0.14 that caused a shift to a eutrophic low-macrophyte dominated state. Our results highlight that SDD/WL must be improved for SAV recolonization, rather than merely reducing nutrient input and regulating water level. Although there is a great knowledge about individual anthropogenic threats to different fish species in the Mediterranean Sea, little is known about how these threats accumulate and interact to affect fish species richness in conjunction with environmental dynamics. This study assesses the role of these threats in the fish richness component and identifies the main areas where the interaction between fish species richness and threats is highest. Our results show that fish richness seems to be higher in saltier and colder areas where the chlorophyll-a and phosphate concentrations are lower. Among the anthropogenic threats analyzed, the costal impact and the fishing effort seems to be the more relevant ones. Overall areas with high fish richness are mainly located along the western and northern shores, with lower values in the south-eastern regions. Simple Summary: In a fast-changing world, it is highly important to consider the possible consequences of human-driven effects that can alter natural ecosystems. In this review, we built a framework focused on risk factors associated with new wildlife diseases, such as immune system suppression, pathogen transmission between different animal species (also called "spillover"), and disease spread. Our conceptual framework describes major potential interactions between humans and nature that might occur in coupled human and natural systems, those systems where humans and wildlife are tightly linked, conceptually and geographically. Such interactions consist of certain anthropogenic effects (such as pollution, climate change, unsustainable farming, and more) which we distributed across our conceptual framework to identify their relevance to the wildlife infectious disease risk factors that this manuscript examines. Our developed framework can be applied to many new wildlife diseases, and we provide an application example with an emerging tumoral disease of marine turtles, called Fibropapillomatosis. Our work shows how crucial it is to analyze conservation issues beyond what is immediately apparent, and for science to operate through research collaboration and synergy. Emerging infectious diseases of wildlife have markedly increased in the last few decades. Unsustainable, continuous, and rapid alterations within and between coupled human and natural systems have significantly disrupted wildlife disease dynamics. Direct and indirect anthropogenic effects, such as climate change, pollution, encroachment, urbanization, travel, and trade, can promote outbreaks of infectious diseases in wildlife. We constructed a coupled human and natural systems framework identifying three main wildlife disease risk factors behind these anthropogenic effects: (i) immune suppression, (ii) viral spillover, and (iii) disease propagation. Through complex and convoluted dynamics, each of the anthropogenic effects and activities listed in our framework can lead, to some extent, to one or more of the identified risk factors accelerating disease outbreaks in wildlife. In this review, we present a novel framework to study anthropogenic effects within coupled human and natural systems that facilitate the emergence of infectious disease involving wildlife. We demonstrate the utility of the framework by applying it to Fibropapillomatosis disease of marine turtles. We aim to articulate the intricate and complex nature of anthropogenically exacerbated wildlife infectious diseases as multifactorial. This paper supports the adoption of a One Health approach and invites the integration of multiple disciplines for the achievement of effective and long-lasting conservation and the mitigation of wildlife emerging diseases. Simple Summary: The translocation of elephants is a management tool developed in the 1980s during the culling operations at the Kruger National Park, South Africa, to remove "surplus" elephants from fenced properties. Elephants live in large social networks and form strong social bonds within their family units. In particular, the mother–offspring bond is crucial to the learning and development of social skills and social and environmental competence of the calves. The leadership role and experience of the matriarch appear to be an important factor in providing the necessary knowledge to optimise social and environmental skills and competence. The translocation of smaller groups of elephants results in the social disruption of these networks. This paper looks at the social and ecological aspects of such disruption and what it implies for elephants. A herd of Orphans and a translocated herd consisting of two families were observed over several years. The Orphans demonstrated marked effects of social disruption by splitting more frequently and for longer periods than the family herd and experiencing accelerated reproduction. Social disruption may therefore reduce learning opportunities with implications for elephant society as well as for conservation. African elephants (Loxodonta africana) exhibit a long developmental period during which they acquire complex social and ecological knowledge through social networks. Central to this is that matriarchs and older individuals play an important role as repositories of information gained through experience. Anthropogenic interventions—including poaching, culling, translocation, and hunting—can disrupt elephants' social networks, with implications for individual fitness and potential long-term population viability. Here, we draw on a unique long-running, individual-based dataset to examine the impacts of translocation on a population of elephants in South Africa, taking into consideration demographic rates, social dynamics, and ecological decision-making. Specifically, we compared two translocated groups: a group of unrelated culling Orphans and a family herd. We found that the Orphan group experienced accelerated reproductive rates when compared with the family herd. The Orphan group also fissioned more frequently and for longer periods of time, suggesting lower cohesiveness, and were less decisive in their large-scale movement decisions. These results add to the growing body of literature on the downstream impacts of social disruption for elephants. Whilst the translocation of culling Orphans is no longer practised in South Africa, we encourage careful consideration of any elephant translocation and the resulting social disruption. As a medicinal plant, Artemisia annua L. is the main source of artemisinin in malaria drugs, but the lack of understanding of its distribution, environmental conditions and protection status limits the mass acquisition of artemisinin. Therefore, we used the ensemble forecast method to model the current and future global distribution areas of A. annua, evaluated the changes in suitable distribution areas on each continent under impacts of human activities and climate change, and its protection status on each continent in the corresponding period. The results showed that the main distribution areas of A. annua were concentrated in mid-latitudes in western and central Europe, southeastern Asia, southeastern North America and southeastern South America. Under the current climate scenario, human modifications have greatly reduced the suitable distribution area of A. annua, which was projected to expand inland with climate change and human socioeconomic impacts of CMIP6 in the future, but the effects of increasing temperature were different in different periods. Among all continents, the suitable distribution area in Europe was the most affected. However, at present and in the future, A. annua needs high priority protection on all continents. Asia and Europe have slightly better protection status scores than other continents, but the protection status scores of all continents are still very low. Wildlife populations and their habitats are exposed to an expanding diversity and intensity of stressors caused by human activities, within the broader context of natural processes and increasing pressure from climate change. Estimating how these multiple stressors affect individuals, populations, and ecosystems is thus of growing importance. However, their combined effects often cannot be predicted reliably from the individual effects of each stressor, and we lack the mechanistic understanding and analytical tools to predict their joint outcomes. We review the science of multiple stressors and present a conceptual framework that captures and reconciles the variety of existing approaches for assessing combined effects. Specifically, we show that all approaches lie along a spectrum, reflecting increasing assumptions about the mechanisms that regulate the action of single stressors and their combined effects. An emphasis on mechanisms improves analytical precision and predictive power but could introduce bias if the underlying assumptions are incorrect. A purely empirical approach has less risk of bias but requires adequate data on the effects of the full range of anticipated combinations of stressor types and magnitudes. We illustrate how this spectrum can be formalised into specific analytical methods, using an example of North Atlantic right whales feeding on limited prey resources while simultaneously being affected by entanglement in fishing gear. In practice, case-specific management needs and data availability will guide the exploration of the stressor combinations of interest and the selection of a suitable trade-off between precision and bias. Lakes are critical for biogeochemical and ecological processes and are sensitive and vulnerable to anthropogenic disturbances, but how and to what extent human activities disturb the biodiversity in lakes remain unknown. Here, we showed the microbial diversity in 46 lakes and assessed the influence of 27 anthropogenic factors. We found that the economic level (e.g., per capita gross domestic product) was strongly negatively correlated (r = -0.97) with bacterial diversity but positively correlated (r = 0.17) with fungal diversity in lakes. The composition of the microbial community significantly changed with increasing economic level. Bacteria are more sensitive than fungi to anthropogenic impacts. Expanding the population size and increasing the economic level may promote the development of fungal diversity but inhibit bacterial diversity. Air quality, urbanization and ozone were negatively correlated with bacterial diversity, and fisheries had a negative correlation with fungal diversity. The anti-interference ability of lake microorganisms in the middle economic level zones (45,000-90,000 yuan/person) was stronger than that in high-level (> 90,000 yuan/person) and low-level (> 45,000 yuan/person) economic zones. Climate change is not only changing the mean values of environmental parameters that modulate ecosystems, but also the regime of disturbances. Among them, extreme events have a key role in structuring biological communities. Ecosystems are frequently suffering multiple anthropogenic pressures which can cause effects that are not additive. Thus, the effects of extreme events need to be studied in combination with other pressures to adequately evaluate their consequences. We performed a manipulative approach in two rocky shores in the Mediterranean with contrasting levels of anthropogenic pressure (mainly eutrophication) simulating storms with different disturbance regimes in the intertidal and subtidal zones. In the short-term, an extreme storm had a greater impact on the species assemblage than other disturbance regimes, being especially notable in the area suffering from a high anthropogenic pressure. In this area, the species assemblages that suffered from an extreme storm took a longer time to recover than the ones affected by other disturbance regimes and were generally more affected after the disturbance. The intertidal zone, having more variable environmental conditions than the subtidal zone, was more resistant and able to recover from extreme storms. Our results suggest that the effects of extreme events on biological communities could be strengthened when co-occurring with anthropogenic pressures, especially ecosystems adapted to less variable environmental conditions. Lake clarity, usually measured by Secchi disc depth (SDD), is a reliable proxy of lakes trophic status due to its close link with total suspended matter, chlorophyll-a, and nutrients. Trained with in-situ measured SDD and match-up Landsat images, we established various regression models to estimate SDD for global lakes. We selected a unified model which demonstrated good spatiotemporal transferability, and has potential to map SDD in different years with good quality of Landsat top-of-atmosphere (TOA) images embedded in Google Earth Engine (GEE). The unified model was successfully calibrated (n = 3586 data points, R 2  = 0.84, MAPE = 29.8%) against SDD measured in 2235 lakes across the world, and the validation (n = 1779, R 2  = 0.76, MAPE = 38.8%) also exhibited stable performance. The unified model was tuned to historical SDD measurements coincident with different Landsat sensors (L5-TM, L7-ETM+, L8-OLI) launched over the past four decades (1984-2020), thus confirming its temporal stability. Global SDD was mapped using GEE with OLI TOA products mainly acquired in 2019 to examine the spatial variation of lake water clarity (lake surface area ≥ 1 ha) all over the world. Worldwide, lake water clarity averaged 3.13 ± 1.71 m in 2019, but exhibited remarkable spatial variability due to catchment hydrological and landscape settings, lake morphology, elevation and anthropogenic impact. Inland waters in Europe (4.18 ± 1.82 m) and North America (3.84 ± 1.77 m) had the highest clarity due to greater water depth combined with less human disturbance in the high latitude regions. Lakes in South America (2.50 ± 2.33 m), Asia (2.44 ± 1.63 m) and Africa (2.36 ± 0.72 m) displayed intermediate clarity. Lakes in Oceania (1.97 ± 1.48 m) exhibited the lowest clarity for all continents except Antarctica. Further, we used the mapped SDD to evaluate water trophic status using the Carlson trophic state index. Our results indicate that, in 2019, about 63.6% of the lake areas and 47.8% of total lake numbers (2,219,627/4,646,056) were oligotrophic for global lakes, while about 23.6% areal percent and 37.1% of lake numbers are eutrophic mostly as a result of their being located in agricultural and urban-dominated drainage basins. This study, for the first time, provides water clarity information for lakes with area ≥ 1 ha all over the world with 30-m resolution and facilitates the understanding of the water clarity relevant to TSM (r = 0.95), Chl-a (r = 0.73), total phosphorus (r = 0.75), total nitrogen (r = 0.60), which could further provide water clarity data and technical support for trophic level evaluations as well. Tracking the spatiotemporal dynamics of particulate phosphorus concentration (C PP ) and understanding its regulating factors is essential to improve our understanding of its impact on inland water eutrophication. However, few studies have assessed this in eutrophic inland lakes, owing to a lack of suitable bio-optical algorithms allowing the use of remote sensing data. Herein, a novel semi-analytical algorithm of C PP was developed to estimate C PP in lakes on the Yangtze Plain, China. The independent validations of the proposed algorithm showed a satisfying performance with the mean absolute percentage error and root mean square error less than 27% and 27 μg/L, respectively. The Ocean and Land Color Instrument observations revealed a remarkable spatiotemporal heterogeneity of C PP in 23 lakes on the Yangtze Plain from 2016 to 2020, with the lowest value in December (62.91 ± 34.59 μg/L) and the highest C PP in August (114.9 ± 51.69 μg/L). Among the 23 examined lakes, the highest mean C PP was found in Lake Poyang (124.58 ± 44.71 μg/L), while the lowest value was found in Lake Qiandao (33.51 ± 4.71 μg/L). Additionally, 13 lakes demonstrated significant decreasing or increasing trends (P < 0.05) of annual mean C PP during the observation period. The driving factor analysis revealed that four natural factors (wind speed, air temperature, precipitation, and sunshine duration) and two anthropogenic factors (the normalized difference vegetation index and nighttime light) combined explained more than 91% of the variation in C PP , while the impacts of these factors on C PP showed considerable differences among lakes. The contamination of natural resources by hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) originating from natural and anthropogenic activities is a serious environmental concern. Although many articles on chromium remediation have been published, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms involved in remediation with different sorbents is not yet available. In this systematic review, the performance and applicability of several adsorptive materials for Cr(VI) removal from aqueous media are discussed, along with a detailed analysis of the mechanisms involved. Statistical analysis is applied to compare the efficacies of different adsorbents, while a similar approach is used to determine the effects of sorbent properties and experimental conditions on the adsorption capacity. A detailed analysis of the factors involved in fixed-bed column studies is also presented. A suitable desorption approach to the regeneration of the spent adsorbent and its adsorption performance in reuse is also examined. Among the different sorbents, nanoparticles and mineral-doped biochar were found to be the most effective sorbents, while the adsorption was higher at low pH (~4.0) than that at intermediate pH (6-8). Contrary to our expectation, adsorption was high for sorbents with low specific surface areas, suggesting that the adsorption of Cr(VI) is largely influenced by the chemical properties of the sorbents. The optimum adsorption in fixed-bed column systems is obtained at a lower Cr(VI) ion concentration, a lower influent flow rate, and a higher bed height. Since most of the studies reviewed herein were merely experimental and utilized ideal conditions with the presence of a single contaminant, i.e. Cr(VI) in water, further studies on adsorption dynamics with the presence of other interfering ions are suggested. Nowadays, a variety of methodologies are available to assess local, regional and global impacts of human activities on ecosystems, which include Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA) and Ecosystem Services Assessment (ESA). However, none can individually assess both the positive and negative impacts of human activities at different geographical scales in a comprehensive manner. In order to overcome the shortcomings of each methodology and develop more holistic assessments, the integration of these methodologies is essential. Several studies have attempted to integrate these methodologies either conceptually or through applied case studies. To understand why, how and to what extent these methodologies have been integrated, a total of 110 relevant publications were reviewed. The analysis of the case studies showed that the integration can occur at different positions along the cause-effect chain and from this, a classification scheme was proposed to characterize the different integration approaches. Three categories of integration are distinguished: post-analysis, integration through the combination of results, and integration through the complementation of a driving method. The literature review highlights that the most recurrent type of integration is the latter. While the integration through the complementation of a driving method is more realistic and accurate compared to the other two categories, its development is more complex and a higher data requirement could be needed. In addition to this, there is always the risk of double-counting for all the approaches. None of the integration approaches can be categorized as a full integration, but this is not necessarily needed to have a comprehensive assessment. The increase of urban expansion, whereby soils become altered or filled with buildings through human action, presents a global threat to biodiversity and the spread of disease. Many of the factors determining bird migration routes and disease spread are poorly understood. We studied the migration routes of common quail Coturnix coturnix in western Europe. We examined the recoveries of ringed birds to characterize their migration trajectories to understand how this nocturnal migrant crosses artificial areas and predict the risk of migration collapse and disease transmission. We evaluated the possible consequences of quail collisions with human infrastructure elements (i.e., buildings, cranes, overhead cables and wires, and wind farm structures) to assess disease transmission in relation to the amount of urban soil. Our results show that variations in the amount of artificialized soil in central Europe are correlated with the relative absence of quail migratory routes. Conceptual models incorporating environmental ecology showed the relationships between climate warming, agroecosystems, and urban ecosystems as well as human health and economic growth. We predict a drastic loss of biodiversity and spread of disease if we do not curb the spread of land consumption. Taking a broad view of the interrelations discussed here allows predictions of global vulnerability and increased risks to health due to losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services.
